Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A all time great!
"You have brought music back into my home".This is a story about a man, who lost his wife, suffered loneliness, realized the value of his family and embraces his family once again in music and drama, and falls in love with a woman of great culture and life.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL TRANSFER OF A PERFECT MOVIE
SOUND OF MUSIC 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Fox) is the latest digital version of this beloved, timeless, film. The two-disc set features an exceptionally sharp transfer and a rich audio mix but the real treat is the new commentary with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer (this in addition to the late Robert Wise's commentary).

4-0 out of 5 stars Family Charmer
Even among Disney films there are few that absolutely everyone in the family can watch without provisos of some kind. This movie is one of those.Fans of classic film stars will find this charming family film to be filled with several actors in the prime of their lives.

Disney is US is dropping the ball by not releasing this great movie in the US onto DVD. Here's how to get a legimate Region 2 copy, order it from amazon.co.uk! 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have companion to Song Of The South
If you love Song of The South, you'll probably like this one almost as much.It stars the same boy, Bobby Driscoll, and has animated sequences. The cartoons aren't as funny as Uncle Remus's tales, but the rest of the story is better. The little boy raises a black lamb to enter at the fair. The lamb gets into a lot of mischief, and the boy learns some valuable lessons.Great performances by Beulah Bondi, Burl Ives, and Harry Carey help make this a memorable family classic.Great technicolor too! ... Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is a rogue pirate. He was exiled from his crew and left on an island. Jack managed to escape the island and is now looking for revenge and wants his ship back. Jack's former crew invade the town of Port Royal looking for a medallion that could rid them of their curse. They kidnap Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and her childhood friend, Will (Orlando Bloom), sets out to rescue her with the help of Jack Sparrow.

Let's face it, has there been a more fun and memorable pirate movie since 1952 when Burt Lancaster and his silent sidekick Ojo swashbuckled bad guys, slid down awnings, and saved the girl?Go ahead, search your brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Aid to Spiritual Enlightenment!
In the early 1970s I began having spontaneous, conscious "out-of-body" experiences. As they progressed, I struggled to learn how to induce the experiences ... as well as being able to exercise some control over them.I read every book on "out-of-body' experiences that I could get my hands on. Then came the film "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"! I was utterely captivated!I identified with the character of Jonathan from the begining of the story to end. I related his personal struggles to my own ... his love of "flight" and his determination to prove that there is more to life than what "meets the eye".
5-0 out of 5 stars 30+ years later, I'm still moved by it
It haunted me as a child of nine years when my mother took me to see it on its original theatrical release. It inspires me today as an adult. Why is this not out on DVD?!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grew up loving it
Until this afternoon, I did not realize just how old this wonderful movie is.Not that it matters that it's older than I am.I grew up watching this and was wondering if it would be possible to replace that old tape if there ever were reason. This film and the soundtrack LP have inspired me a great many times over the years.I will echo some others here in saying that if you watch this film the same as you would watch most feature films today, you'll miss out.You have to be able to just sit back and relax with it.Pay attention to what's going on, and what Johnathan is actually experiencing. If I could walk into a brick and mortar store and see this video on the shelf in any format, I'd probably go into debt buying 5 copies.I love this hard to find film.Just to make sure I never have to worry about losing it forever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The NY Times Blew It!
The day after the Flim-Flam Man debuted in New York City in 1967, Bosley Crowther, the critic for the Times, panned the movie and Scott's acting in particular. In the decades since, the people have spoken! This is one of the best yarns ever put on film, in my opinion.A morality tale told with humor, poignance and great acting.Grab it.Watch it.Enjoy it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I never understand the filmstudios politics!
In the early Nineties I had been lucky to watch a fair amount of American movies in a theatre, located in barracks in Germany. Me -as a German- and friends of mine had luck and some nice Americans around who allowed me to enter the theatre together with them. This has not been the usual politics in these years, but well, for me it has been great fun. i had been able to watch movies uncut, uncensored and not dubbed with German language, and most of the times a lot earlier than compared to German theatres. And one of the films I miss since these days is Stone Cold.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
I used to watch the soap opera, then I saw this film.I loved them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darker than "Dark"
"House of Dark Shadows" is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and I've always been a fan of the TV series. The movie, though, is fairly gory and much darker than the series had ever been. It was made 35 years ago, but it still scares me when I watch it!Some of the best scenes include Willie Loomis releasing Barnabas from his coffin, and the film's climax involving Barnabas, Maggie Evans, Jeff Clark and Willie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweat!
I have been stepping for some time now and found this video to be clear and easy to follow with alot of basic moves. It definitely was a workout and I am drenched when I finish. The moves are not too complicated so a beginner could follow along but you also get a work out if you have been stepping for awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best....
I haven't done my step in 2 years (replaced by the treadmill). I have so many videos -- all the Reeboks, Kathy Smith, etc.I pulled this video out to try my step again as a break from running/walking and I'd forgotten HOW MUCH I LOVE IT!!!This tape is still the best of all of 'em -- the drumming, the simple yet beneficial moves... an overall great workout. Intense Moves and the Power Workout (both Reebok) are also GREAT videos but much more challenging.Welcome back, step!

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Battlestar Galactica Meets Step Aerobics
This is my first and still favorite step video. It is a great beginner workout, with each step slowly being built up from previous moves. The video teaches you the terminology of step such as "repeaters" for 3 successive leg lifts.

Editorial Review

The wonderful Leslie Caron stars in this Oscar-winning musical fable with a touch of the bizarre. Caron plays Lili, a recently orphaned waif hopelessly in love with a carnival magician. Mel Ferrer plays Paul, a gruff puppeteer who can express his softer side only through his puppets. Sound weird? It is. Caron's performance is lovely. She is, as always, a graceful dancer, but she is also able to pull off the much more difficult task of making Lili pure and innocent without being icky--shetalks to Paul's puppets with complete conviction. (The puppets, by the way, are incredibly creepy.) Younger viewers will take Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I could tell you all about this wonderful movie, but other reviewers have done such a great job.Just let me add one tidbit--the end contains what is probably the most hilarious screen kiss in history (although I'm sure it was meant to seem passionate).

5-0 out of 5 stars Give That Girl A Contract
How hard can it be to find a film with elements of homelessness, unemployment, despair, suicidal thoughts, thievery, feigned affection, disability and self-pity? Not very hard you say. But in a G-rated film barely eighty minutes long?
5-0 out of 5 stars Career High for Caron, Ferrer, and -- Zsa Zsa
Charles Walters is another, like George Sidney, another incredibly talented director whose 1950s work has been for too long overshadowed by his MGM competitors Cukor, Donen and Minnelli.Walters isn't nearly as flashy as these guys, but where it counts, he's got it all, and as a choreographer, he can design dance films in a way that eluded these other non-dancers.LILI isn't a musical per se, though years later it inspired the memorable Bob Merrill score for CARNIVAL, but it has more than enough music to qualify it as the kind of picture you leave the theater whistling the tunes from. And in Leslie Caron they found the right blend of wistfulness and innocence; even her mouth looks bruised, but her eyes light up whenever she sees her darling puppets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Williams at his finest (and funniest)
Why Robin Williams can't get an Oscar nod for his specialty (comedy) is beyond me.He's been nominated numerous times, and actually won, for his dramatic roles, but to me Williams will always shine much brighter when making us laugh. To me, arguably his greatest role was that of Daniel Hillard, a very irresponsible married man, father of three, whose wife Miranda (Field) finally has enough and puts him out.In an attempt to see more of his children he disguises himself as Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, an elderly woman who is hired to take care of the children while their mother is at work.William's is genius as he frantically switches between Daniel and Euphegenia, trying to, through Mrs. Doubtfire, win back his wife and deter her from Stu (Bosnan), the new man in her life.Hysterical from start to finish, `Mrs. Doubtfire' is a sure fire crowd pleaser.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Doubtfire
This movie is really good and funny. The actors did a great job. If you like comedies, you should definately check this movie out.
5-0 out of 5 stars More please!
Robin Williams should stick to making films like this and stop trying to pander to the chattering classes by making stinkers such as Good Will Hunting. Mr Williams as the calamitous Mrs Doubtfire is both hilarious and moving. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Action packed sci-fi thriller about how the aliens got away
The two lead characters, assisted by Keenan Wynn, manage to get a group of aliens out of the Los Angeles area to a remote desert location.
3-0 out of 5 stars Death Valley Scenery
Coincidentally I rented "Wavelength" and I purchased "Six-String Samurai" during the same week. Both movies featured lots of scenery from Death Valley and surrounding areas. While "Wavelength" emphasized Panamint Valley, "Six-String Samurai" contained many scenes that were filmed in Searles Valley. Both valleys are near Death Valley. Another interesting coincidence is that both movies feature somewhat unusual soundtracks. The soundtrack for "Wavelength" was created by Tangerine Dream and "Six-String Samurai" featured lots of surf guitar songs. I'll admit that I wasn't crazy about either soundtrack, but atleast they weren't normal, boring, typical soundtracks either. Both movies were a little quirky and both seemed to have low budgets, or atleast not the greatest production quality. On the otherhand, both movies were interesting to watch and somewhat enjoyable, but I'm not sure if I would have found them so interesting if I wasn't preoccupied with identifying the locations where various scenes were shot. So, if you enjoy interesting desert scenery, I'd recommend both movies. The last third of "Wavelength" featured lots of scenes shot in Panamint Valley and the other movie had nice shots of the Trona Pinnacles. From a plot and character perspective, I'd say that "Wavelength" was the better of the two movies although the first two-thirds of the movie was a little tedious (they should have gotten to the desert a little sooner in the movie).

4-0 out of 5 stars E.T. Meets Reality
Of the few reviews when this movie came out, most concluded Wavelength was better than the cute E.T.I completely agree, and wonder why this movie hasn't been released on DVD.The ending, most often written about reminds us of "Starman", but that's missing the point of this movie that's really about us! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Calling Criterion...
This is a great film.It grabs the attention from the opening credits and never lets up.I've seen it several times over the years on TV (in a no doubt "cleaned up for TV version"), but now it's time for a DVD, dammit!
5-0 out of 5 stars Run for Your Life: Exciting Realism
An all time great film with Cornel Wilde starring and producing the film. This adventure film offers a respectful portrayal of African life with a guide (Wilde) on his last hunting safari with an arrogant group of white hunters. Insult turns toultimate and dramatic revenge as the insulted tribe acts to even the score in a barbaric and frightening fashion. You pity the ignorant whites as they suffer cruel and horrible death along with their African aides. In respect to Wilde, the tribe allows him a brave's death allowing him to run for his life with a head start with nothing but his bare skin. Wilde is followed by single tribesman staggered in pursuit but his initial success against his adversaries result in pursuit by a well armed platoon of tribesman led by an angry and possessed leader that will not stop. Filmed on location in Africa, Wilde plays the part realistically, almost in documentary style, virtually living the role as he eats what he can in this marathon pursuit. Portraying the harshness of African life in the mid 20th century, you can relate to the cruelty of Darfur today with a scene of Arabs raiding a peaceful village brutally making them slaves for sale. The film features non-stop excitement with a race to the death that reaches its climax, with all characters gasping for air, only at the very end of the film. You won't catch your own breath until the credits pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic film. lease the rights! release a DVD!!!!
This is one of the great films; unfortunately somewhat unknown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five star performance by Diane Keaton, as always
I'm in awe on how great an actress Diane Keaton is!Her performance in this film, though a very sad film, was awesome!!!I'm addicted to all her movies. When will this movie and some of her old movies be available on DVD? She's such an excellent actress that all her movies should easily be available to the public- especially on DVD format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another look at a darker side of life in the seventies
Even today, this movie that made a statement on the debauchery of the seventies, is still relevant. The story of a young lady out on her own for the first time, free from her morality preaching catholic dad and hungry to indulge in the night life. A frequenter of the area bar scene, Dianne Keaton in perhaps her sexiest, if not most provocative role hops from dive to dive, man to man in an attempt to whet her insatiable sexual appetite. An interesting, if dark look at the bar scene and all its unpredictability. Directed with a style of its own, and a good eye for character development, "Goodbar" is an excellent film - one of the best of the seventies. It's also one of the most chilling endings of any movie I've ever seen - one that leaves you almost gasping. Much of the subject matter of this film won't have the same shocking effect it had upon it's original release in the mid-seventies. Today's premium cable original programming (eg. "Queer as Folk) make this minor league stuff by comparison. But that doesn't make this movie any less disturbing. This is still a movie that is just as applicable to today's careless adventures into the night life. Tuesday Weld, Tom Berenger, Richard Kiley, Levar Burton and William Atherton ("Die Hard's" pain in the butt news reporter) are perfectly cast and make notable contributions. And Richard Gere in one of his earliest roles gives a performance that surely got him future roles.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why does Obi-Wan Kenobi look like Jesus Christ?
Picking up 10 years later, Anakin Skywalker is no longer an adorable if stoic little kid but now a tall, gangly, jerky young man (Hayden Christensen) with a tendency to whine and bitch about stuff for no apparent reason (takes things way too personally he does). Well, him and his master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) are assigned to protect former queen turned senator Padme (Natalie Portman) after ten years apart from an assassin. This job eventually leads to Obi-Wan being separated from Anakin while he investigates the assassin who happens to be involved with a cloning conspiracy and this later leads him to a renegade Jedi master played by Christopher Lee. Guess what? Anakin still has the hots for Padme and whilst Obi-Wan is away Anakin would like nothing better than to strip her naked and get her in the sack. The future Darth Vader also has a nightmare about his mom's death back on Tatioone and he FINALLY goes to rescue her but by the time he gets there she's already dead so he goes and kills the cannibal Sand People who killed her.

5-0 out of 5 stars First hand delight from second hand lions
I missed this movie in the theaters so when it bacame available to rent my wife and I decided to give it a try. What a delight, I envy anyone seeing this film for the first time. From the wonderful cast, Caine, Duvall, and Osment are in their peak form; to the fine direction and the beautiful cinematography the film is a true treasure. After watching it we immediately bought several DVD's and gave them as gifts to family members and friends. A wonderful mix of coming of age, adventure, and just genuine good fun this is a must see film.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I've ever seen.
The actors were great! The story of the two brothers, taking in their relative's son - then with what they taught him through the adventures they had experienced in their lives, was so heartwarming. Great movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic That Doesn't Let Up!
This video may be 20 years old, but it stands the test of time.If you can get past the dated clothes and music, you have in your hands an excellent workout that will challenge you for years to come. The routine has a mix of cardio, weights and floor work.In my opinion the floor work is the most challenging-- I hit muscle failure many times today.Susan Harris, the instructor, frequently mentions going at your own pace, and I think this is the key.Use weights if you can.Do as many reps as you can. This will not only give you goals to work toward but allow to you see progress over time.If you're looking for a cardio-heavy, total low impact workout, this is not the tape for you. However, if you can handle a little jogging in place and want to really challenge your muscles, give this one a try.The Firm video series has flourished for 2 decades, and this video is one reason why!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best tapes ever made
This is one of the most great tapes in the world.I love everything about it.The music is beautiful, the mansion setting is breath taking and the instructer Susan Harris is wonderful. There is nobody I think better than Susan Harris.I was doing other things to get into shape and nothing was working good. When I was looking through my mom`s old tapes I picked this one up and started doing it.After that I was hooked I tell you.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best for people who work from home/ El mejor para gente que trabaja desde su casa
I started using this tape two years ago. I have three young kids and work from home. I'm a writer, which means lots of sitting time and stress--no time to go to the gym. This tape meant a dramatic difference for me. At age 40 I feel stronger, healthier, and more productive :-) The better I feel, the more creative and alert I am. Although I've bought more FIRM tapes and DVDs, this continues to be my very favorite (but the others are great too). A review was long overdue!

Editorial Review

From the moment the young Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is stolen from his life and ancestral home in 18th-century Africa and brought under inhumane conditions to be auctioned as a slave in America, a line is begun that leads from this most shameful chapter in U.S. history to the 20th-century author Alex Haley, a Kinte descendant. The late Haley's acclaimed book Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Picture Is Worth A Million Words!
Words alone cannot describe the effect this made for tv movie had on me when I watched the original showing on tv (1977).I was taken aback at how realistically they were allowed to portray this man's (Haley) story, which in effect was the story of the entire Black race and, to a large degree, the White race in this country! For Blacks it was like reliving their history. For Whites it was a serious enlightenment (and in some cases a rude awakening). It managed to open the door for dialogue between the races, and inspired a whole nation to get involved with genealogy too. Most importantly, it inspired most of this nation to say "never again."I have to agree with D. Hammork though in that I'm shocked and appalled at Amazon for leaving LeVar Burton and John Amos (who both played the MAIN character)off of their list of people who STARRED in this movie! This movie launched Burton's career; and John Amos had already been a star in his own right! Please get your act together!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ARTISTIC TRIUMPH
unless u count the Phil Collins songs.... Well they are forgettable indeed and an intrusion at times. This movie didn`t need songs....
3-0 out of 5 stars I Like The Movie But..
The actual DVD sucks. The menu is unimpressive and for some reason, there is like 10 minutes of advertising from Disney. The extras are boring too. I don't want to see a Phil Collins music video! I likethe movie. It is funny and visually beautiful. The start is sad, but not as sad as Finding Nemo (a movie that I adore to no end!) As a Disney movie, it is a bit grown up for kids as there are guns and deaths. But hey, I know people who let children watch worse stuff than that, so I'm not complaining. In the end, the movie is watchable, but the DVD blows and isn't wirth the money. By the way, I'm not saying that Tarzan isn't good. Amazon tells us to review the PRODUCT as well as the movie. The movie gets a four from me and the DVD gets a minus ten.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behold the Legend of Tarzan...
After churning out less than stellar animation over the last few years, yet still creating hits at the box office, it's nice to go back and watch some of the other films that Disney Studios has made when they used a more elegant, and classy character design. One of the films they used their classic design for was a new interpretation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's literary classic "Tarzan".
