Editorial Review

This sweet, heartwarming 1973 offering from the Peanuts gang (and Charles Schultz) once again shows Charlie Brown in a pickle, as his erstwhile friends impose upon the hapless would-be-host to provide a memorable and traditional Thanksgiving feast. And as much as Charlie Brown would rather forget the whole thing, he just can't help but try for fear of being labeled a failure. Ultimately it's up to Snoopy and Woodstock to save Charlie from certain embarrassment, and it falls to Linus to impart to all assembled the true meaning of Thanksgiving. This very special Emmy Award-winning cartoon features the usual sweet unassuming humor that only the Peanuts can provide, along with the melodic Vince Guaraldi score, and is one of those childhood classics meant to be enjoyed again and again. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Special!!
Not quite as good as the Christmas and Halloween Specials, but still one of our favorites. The "Mayflower Voyage" bonus on the DVD is wonderful!!It is an historically accurate version of the Mayflower voyage that appeals to children because it retains the charm of the Peanuts characters without being too "cutesy."My second grade twins studied the pilgrims this year and I offered to share our DVD with their teachers. They had never heard of it before but they absolutetly loved it because it fit right into what the children were learning in the classroom. The Mayflower Voyage ended up being shown in virturally all of the primary grade classrooms in November.I am buying them their own copy to use next year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun!!
I have to say that this is a Thanksgiving tradition where we watch this on TV and I just bought the DVD and we can watch it on our own time during the thanksgiving season.I love it when snoopy is cooking the thanksgiving dinner and get into a fight with the law chair. The bonus feature "The Mayflower Voyage" is educational but boring.I still give it 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Peppermint Patty needs a smack in the mouth.
Who the heck does she think she is? First she invites herself over to Charlie Brown's house for Thanksgiving, then she invites her girlfriend and Franklin too! What's up with that? Of course Chuck has no backbone and agrees to everything even though all he can make is popcorn and toast. Well thank God Snoopy comes to the rescue. Sure he gets in a fight with a lawn chair, but he gets the place set up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Land before Time
I bought this movie for my son and he likes it. My mother bought it for me when i was a child and for her other grandchildren and we all loved it. this is a must have classic all time movie. you wont be dissapointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4:3 was the original aspect ratio
For those of you who are hesitant to buy this because it says "fullscreen", please know that 4:3 was the original aspect ratio for this film. I wish the DVD box said so. But normally a lot of these movies are animated in full screen and then when they are released in theatres they are matted out so it fits the cinema screen properly. Bambi was also animated in 4:3 or 1:33:1 as this says. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's October 31 and Barney and the kids are decorating for a Halloween party at school. This means a trip to a local farm for the usual pumpkins, the Indian corn, and a good excuse for some seasonal songs ("You can call it fall, if that's what you please / But I say I like autumn.") There are14 songs, including at least one repeat from an earlier tape, and the usual Barney-ized versions of traditional tunes--the most bizarre being "S-M-I-L-E" to the music of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The prehistoric galoot and his "Halloween team" make some construction-paper spiders and paper-bag owls that are easy to duplicate at home and some foot-painting that would do a number on your carpets. The party is the big payoff, complete with prizeless games, a candy-filled piñata, and Barney boogeying down. The secondary story has BJ and Baby Bop on a dismal trick-or-treat outing, which includes safety advice but ultimately seems to suggest that this most-typical Halloween activity isn't a good idea. On the costume front, cowboys, ballerinas, and scarecrows are the order of the night, as this festive, but decidedly unspooky, 50-minute tape sidesteps the whole ghost/witch/goblin theme. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For Barney, This is Pretty Good
Even for those parents, who are not Barney fans, this DVD is a good one.The songs are cute & our two year old son manages to be able to sing along with some of them. The decorations that they make (spiders from hand prints, ghosts from foot prints) will give you some ideas of ways to entertain your children around Halloween. The costumes are good - certainly not too scary for small children.Overall, our son gives it two thumbs up and requests this DVD by name (even after Halloween)!

4-0 out of 5 stars BARNEY CELEBRATES HALLOWEEN
This is one we just picked up recently for our 2 1/2 year old.He likes Barney but he's not his favorite but he just loves Halloween so this was a great tape for him.Barney is joined by Baby Bop and the usual gang of kids as they celebrate Halloween.Barney and the kids take a trip to a farm where they learn all about fall fun such as cider and pumpkins. From there it's off to school to help the teacher decorate for the big Halloween party.Barney in the gang make several cute craft projects including paper spiders and goodie bags and also paint some pumpkins.later that evening they all get in their costumes anf go to the big party at school.

In England, there is a castle that belonged to the Canterville family, a family known for their cowardice. During the 1600s, one such member Sir Simon of Canterville (Charles Laughton) fled from a duel to defend his brother's honor. His father was so ashamed with his son, that he walled him up to die in the castle. Since then, he was cursed to roam about a night until a member of the family performed a brave act in his honor.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas's 1981 resurrection of the Saturday-matinee adventure genre was deservedly popular, and kicked off a successful trilogy.Set in 1936, this first feature introduces Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and adventurer whose quests for rare antiquities frequently find him running from one menace or another. 5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is great!
This movie is an excellent film! Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan, this film is superior to most action films in history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soft spot for this one
Amidst all the adventure, I consider this a sentimental favorite because it was one fo the first movies I can remember seeing with my future husband as a young girl. Nothing like a scary adventure movie for holding handsin a movie theatre. And it is a great movie. I think it is the best in the trilogy...but I hear another is coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ford really delivers..."
Steven Spielberg directs this action-adventure, which has something in it for everybody.Action, adventure, and even a tiny bit of romance. The plot is simple-Hitler's men have discovered Tanice (not sure how its spelled), "one of the possible resting places of the Lost Ark."Indiana Jones, also known to his peers as "Indy", is hired to recover the Ark.The only problem is that Indy has to duke it out with some very nasty Nazis in order to successfully recover the ancient artifact. The Nazis are assisted by a French archaeologist named Beloch (not sure how that's spelled either) who can be considered Indy's archrival. If Jones is to succeed, he must use all his strength and wit to thwart his adversaries, whether they be gun-toting Nazis, sword-wielding Arabs or deadly snakes.Throw in a great (and I mean GREAT) musical score by John Williams, a charismatic hero (Harrison Ford really delivers in the role of Indy) and some pretty darn good special effects, and the result is a movie for the ages! This is one movie I can watch over and over and over and...well, you get the idea. Its non-stop action really packs a punch that is all too often missed in movies today; there is always something interesting going on in this movie.I own this film in the "pan-and-scan" format, which is considered by many to be the "poor" standard of viewing movies.Fortunately, this movie is so good that watching it in ANY format is a real treat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?
Seriously.I cannot believe that this movie isn't on DVD, yet! With all these people who were teens in the 80's now old enough to collect their favorite teen movies, you'd think the owners of these classic 80's teen movies would want to collect! Especially since one of the stars was recently on a reality show AND was an academy award winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree about the songs..
I also loved the original end credit song "Let Your Love Flow" and have no clue why they changed it, my guess is , and this is only speculation, is that when the whole thing about Kristy McNichol "possibly being a lesbian" came around, I think that some may of taken that song out of context in thinking that with that song, it may of suggested "something" that might of happened with the girls after the thought, with the song speaking of "love" and all, I don't know, just my guess and thoughts.. who knows, BUT it was/is a great song to have in the end credits of that movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put this out on DVD!!!!!!!
I love this movie!I would like to get it on DVD though. My VHS tapes are not faring as well as my DVD's -and this movie is definately a keeper!I love Kristy, Tatum and Matt Dillon!Great story! ... Read more

Shot on location in numerous countries, this ambitious Wim Wendersfantasy takes Sam Neill, Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, and a ragtag group in pursuit around the world and back again. Though set in 1999 under the shadow of impending disaster as a wobbly nuclear satellite threatens to Chernobyl the planet, the leisurely gait of their worldwide escapades has a distinctly '40s-era decadence. The ultimate object of their quest is a machine that records visual information from one person and reconstructs it in the brains of others--granting the miraculous power of sight to the blind for one thing, but even more mystically, enabling a person's dreams to be recorded. When the film seeks resolutions on the most intimate questions of the human soul which dovetail with the possibility of a destroyed world, the film is hampered by the VHS running time, which subtracts several hours from the laser disc version. But numerous joys, not least among them Jeanne Moreau and Max von Sydow as Hurt's parents, inhabit this thought-provoking film. Read more

Look who became a star. Barbie comes to life in this computer-animatedChristmas tale that quite naturally takes the longtime favorite doll into a newrealm. The plot is a slight variation on the traditional ballet based onTchaikovsky's music. Instead of being in an open-ended dream, Barbie and herescort, the Nutcracker (soon to be Ken, natch), are on an adventurous quest.Along the way there are more creatures and derring-do than in the original. Thesole known voice talent, Tim Curry, has a good old time as the Mouse King, andthe animated dancing is gracefully adapted from New York City Balletchoreography. A few clever characters, bright animation, and wonderful musicshould entrance any Barbie fans ages 3 to 9. The 78-minute feature debuted onvideo shortly before playing on CBS in 2001. Read more

This movie has stood the test of time...and my memory.Although I haven't seen it in years, I remember loving it.This film has everything from adventure to comedy & even romance. Both Tom Selleck & Bess Armstrong are wonderful in the movie; they are terrific actors! As always, Wilfred Brimley is a treat.
5-0 out of 5 stars High Road to China
After reading the many reviews, I almost decided to forego any further comment. The movie is excellent; well scripted, well cast, and has excellent cinemetography and editing. This is not Academy Award material; it was intended to entertain without trying to convey deep social issues and succeeds in every category. The on-screen interaction between Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong is outstanding and I had hoped they would be paired again. I especially enjoyed the flying sequences; without computer graphics the stunts and simulated combat scenes certainly kept my interest. The entire movie was fast paced, suited to any and every audience, and delivers thrills and laughter in equal measure. Where is the DVD??? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a DVD (and might I suggest a Re-make?)
First of all, I have no idea why this film is not available on DVD yet. You might be looking at my rating right now and thinking "He only gave it 3 stars? Who cares if it comes out on DVD!" Let me explain.
5-0 out of 5 stars DVD, PLEASE!!
When, when, when is this terrific movie going to come out on DVD?The mystery is great, the acting terrific and I defy anyone who sees it for the first time to figure it out!

3-0 out of 5 stars Huston In A Minor Key
While not necessarily one of the shining stars of director John Huston's career, "The List of Adrian Messenger" is a fairly engrossing mystery. George C. Scott stars as a retired MI-5 inspector who is given a list of 11 men by his good friend Adrian Messenger (John Merivale). When the men on the list--and Messenger himself--all end up dead, Scott must discover what links them together, and who is eliminating them one by one. The excellent supporting cast includes Herbert Marshall, Jacques Roux, and Dana Wynter, but the central gimmick of the film is spotting the cameo appearances by Tony Curtis, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, and Robert Mitchum. It's not hard to spot the heavy makeup; it's tougher figuring out who is behind it. Huston himself also makes a cameo toward the end, but without makeup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Tradition
I first saw this movie when it originally aired on TV.After it was over, my sister and I trailed down the hallway of our house hanging on to my mother because we were so scared. We taped it a few years later and have watched it almost every year since on or around Halloween.I can honestly say that I would not watch it by myself because it still scares me so much.Movies today don't have the "scare factor" anymore - they go straight for the gore. This was so incredibly well acted.I can't look at Charles Durning the same way after seeing him as the lecherous postman."Bubba didn't do it" is one of my family's favorite catch phrases when someone is accused of doing something they didn't do.I just wish someone would put it on DVD so we could finally retire that old VHS tape with all the old commercials from 1980-something.This is a much-overlooked gem of a horror movie and I recommend it to anyone who really wants to be scared and not just grossed out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Any Better Then This!
So who says you need a huge budget, a lot of computer generated special effects, and super big names to make an excellent horror film?
5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites after all these years.
I saw this movie when it aired years ago and thought it was great. It's very well written, directed and acted, with very little special effects, but it stands on it's own.Years later, I saw it coming on and recorded it only to lose it since.I've watched for it nearly every Halloween since but it never seems to air.I finally found a copy on ebay and bought it again. If you haven't seen it, I hope you get to.It's a real good story of revenge from the dark side, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat!Durning does such a good acting job in this movie, as well as his supporting cast.I can't wait to see it again! ... I used to love this Peter Weir movie and now sadly it seems far too idealistic and implausible to me. I wish it didn't. I've probably seen Dead Poet's Society a dozen times and while I still think it is a beautiful motion picture in its message about how the power of the written word as a tool for free thought is a life-changing force, I can't seem to find it in me to think it's possible that a teacher could have reached teenaged boys in quite that way. Well, I guess that's why we have films, so we can see things we wouldn't in life. All this said, I do believe Dead Poet's Society is a classic. If you haven't seen it, you probably should. It is an uplifting, often gloriously beautiful, always embraceable film with a solid cast that includes Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and living theatrical legend, Norman Lloyd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raises interesting questions
This film is superlative by every standard.Robin Williams does a brilliant job in his role as a semi-bohemian poetry teacher with a passion for challenging orthodoxy. As mentioned so many times by past reviewers, Ethan Hawke's performance is similarly powerful, as are those of the other boys.Sets and cinematography deserve praise too, for capturing the "feel" not only of the school but the era in which it is set.The script is superb as well.It captures all the angst felt by the young men as they begin to question the world they have been thrust into and their places in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Captain, my captain..."
The influx of teacher/student movies will never cease. That said there are those that succeed on every level like `A Beautiful Mind' or `Mr. Holland's Opus' and even `Dangerous Minds' to an extent. Then you have those that fail miserably. But this film is neither. It failed to move me in ways never done before, but it also carried enough weight to make the experience worth the time spent viewing it.`Dead Poets Society' is a film about being who you are despite what the rest of society wants you to be.It's about expressing yourself in the face of adversity. The idea of a bunch of male college students secretly sneaking off campus to read poetry is pretty lame and far fetched, but it's the ferocity in their eyes while in the class room that makes up for the plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Colonial Warfare In America"
An excellent film! This takes place at Fort Pitt(when Pittsburgh was a frontier town)in 1763 during Pontiac's War(a by-product of The French & Indian War). With a budget of 5 million dollars,DeMille puts a very good story together that is based on Neil Swanson's book "The Judas Tree".It is also the first time that I've seen the subject of indentured servitude addressed on film. The viewer also gets to see an appearance of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment(BlackWatch)and how they saved Fort Pitt.I would have liked to have seen more action, but the fighting scenes are adequate enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars PAULETTE AND GARY
Abby Hale (Paulette Goddard), a pretty English convict girl, is ordered deported as a potential slave to the American Colonies.Captain Holden (Gary Cooper) saves her from being auctioned off into slavery, and when she's captured by Indians and subjected to a slow and tortuous death, Holden appears in a flash of gunpowder smoke convincing the Indians that he's a god, so they relinquish Abby to him................THE UNCONQUERED was DeMille's 5 million dollar Technicolored celebration of Cooper's virility and Goddard's femininity and the American Frontier Spirit.Spectacularly stirring and full of fine action scenes, DeMille again screen-vitalised a chapter out of American history. One may say that he supplied both a boistrous and sensational delineation of the frontiersman's era with the full complement of DeMille devices, even to the famed bath sequence, a dip into the serial thrillers when the hero and heroine shoot the rapids to the the edge of a waterfall, and the staging of the battle of Fort Pitt that far outdoes any conflict that was ever dreamt up for a World's Fair carnival!

and shut this movie off, even though I probably was THIS close to the end, because I just couldn't stand it anymore! Totally bad.Read more

Editorial Review

Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY is this film NOT on DVD!!!???
I'm very pleased to see a flurry of 'new'/er reviews of this film.I only hope the DVD gods take notice!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A film no fan of comedy should miss
This touching, sly, hilarious comedy with understated performances should be on DVD. Walter Matthau's transformation from a vain, self-absorbed product of inherited wealth into a caring human being is brilliantly written and played. Elaine May's klutzy, endearing, naive Henrietta is one of the loveliest of screen portrayals. This film is a true classic, under-seen and under-appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exemplary undertaking
My predecessors in reviewing this movie have done a great job of detailing it's highlights... I cannot advance their descriptions and their accolades any farther than they have done.I will, however, add that this is one of those movies that when you see it on cable at 3 am, you will not be able to turn it off. After you watched it and failed to find the title you will canvas your friends to try to find out the name of the movie... when noone knows what you're talking about, go to your secretary who will google the actor and the story line and come up with the name of the movie and you try to find the dvd and it won't exist...then you vainly try to find the title anywhere and it comes up on vhs. BUY IT because if you don't you will certainly wish you had. I have a brand new vhs player sitting in my attic in the box so that in the future, when the vhs player is no longer available and the studio wonks refuse to put classics on dvd, I will still be able to play these movies like "New Leaf" that aren't on DVD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Unico Lives On
"The Adventures of Unico" is one of those nostalgic films that you'll be glad to have in your video library. There's something appealing and exceptional about watching sweet noble Anime characters like Unico. In times of trouble they don't burst out into song like Disney characters do or start talking to the trees. They persevere with great determination to face the world regardless of whatever obstacles come their way.
5-0 out of 5 stars All time classic
This movie was my fav when I was a little kid. It still is my fav!Everytime Unico would morph, this tense emotion would over come me and I would cry like a baby!It is just so beautiful! The way he was just taken away from his mamma ah! It just is amazing! I recommend anyone who has kids: pass this all time classic to them and see them "feel"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can anyone find this episode?
I do remember an episode where there was a flute player and hypnotised everyone to make this great building or something like that. There was a wizard who finally understood what love was about just when he was going to die.I've been looking everywhere for it and I can't find it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That's Fronkenstein...
I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old...yeah, I know...I was probably too young to see this movie but I really didn't get the "racy" parts until I was much older...like 10 1/2...
5-0 out of 5 stars This version is the one to buy....
If you have a widescreen TV, this is the version you must purchase. Unlike the previous "Special Edition" version, this new release is ANAMORPHIC widescreen, finally for the first time and it looks great on my new 32 inch Sony HDTV. The only downside is no sound upgrade, just MONO. The extras are the same as the previous edition. Anyway it is cheap and worth every penny for the new anamorphic transfer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie but...
I love Young Frankenstein. However, I was very disappointed when I realized that this re-release of it only had "mono" audio tracks. This is very disappointing because I would have loved to hear it in Dolby Surround. I am actually rather confused as to why they re-released it, because it has the exact same content as the previous DVD release... possibly a marketing ploy, I dunno.Let me also make clear that THE MOVIE IS A 5 STAR MOVIE BUT THE RE-RELEASE WAS THE REASON FOR THE 4 STAR RATING. Basicly, if you already have the "Special Edition" (earlier DVD release) you may as well save your money; they're exactly the same. However, if you have never seen this movie, I suggest you do yourself a favor and buy this movie. Definately won't disappoint fans of comedy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workouts
I like Jaime's videos. I hate to work my thighs and buns. But this workout is fast and effective. I have bad knees so I have to modify some of the moves but that creates no problems as I still get a very effective workout.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good buns workout
This workout is a good compact workout for the glutes at intermediate level. I don't know if beginners could keep with it at first. The second part for legs is not challenging (except for the numerous lunges) but it will keep you toned up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good routine
I was looking for something that could easily fit into my schedule and produce real results. This tape definitely fit the bill.I use it a couple of times a week and even after the first week I saw improvements in the tone and definition. The fact that its so quick (a total of 16 minutes for buns and thighs) make it easier to keep up with as well.It is a bit difficult physically with a couple of the exercises but overall its a great video. ...
