2-0 out of 5 stars I Don't See Why People Like This
I'm sorry, but I really don't! It's a style called Celtic Drama, which means it's a combination of stories w/o words and traditional Irish Dancing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream Come True After Eurovision--"RIVERDANCE"
With tremendous applause and a standing ovation at the 1994 Eurovision's 7 minute intermission; Michael Flatley, Jean Butler, and an Irish troupe of dancers tapped their way into the record books. It was all that was talked about that night long ago. "Riverdance" was born soon after.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of All the Riverdance Shows
I have seen this particular show several times on video that I rented a few years back. I have never been able to find it anywhere since, in any video store or anywhere else. I have also seen the other Riverdance shows done in New York and Geneva, but this show is by far, the BEST Riverdance show ever! The collaboration of the Riverdance Company, Bill Whelan, Michael Flatley and everyonelse that was involved in this show is just pure magic! As much as I have enjoyed seeing the other Riverdance shows and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance -- there just seems to be something very special about this show! Hope you will get it reproduced very soon! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Beautiful
I love this video. It is a great start to welcome the day or a mini vacation for your soul at the end of a stressful day. I recommend this video to all especially full figure gals as the movements are grounded
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific dance video and great exercise!
I bought this dvd because I was out of shape, looking for some variety in my workout routine, and because it was so well rated.
4-0 out of 5 stars Spontaneous dance, great instruction, somewhat poor structure
I will warn everyone that this is workout is not typical aerobic-style workouts, where there is a strict structure and pattern of dance. Wyoma imparts the spontaneity of African dance into the class, and while she guides you on the dances, she does not give you counts or very many transitions. Wyoma is a dancer, and is not approaching this from an aerobic exercise perspective. This workout is going to be different from your Crunch or Tae-Bo workouts.

4-0 out of 5 stars The story behind the music...
Ok it wasn't exactly what I expected, which teaches me to read the reviews :D, but its still worth the watch to get a feel of those times and how the music came together. I bought it as a gift, and though more music would have been appreciated...it was a good blend of documentary and the music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb music!
I rented this movie on DVD having little knowlege about the subject matter other than it was an award winning documentary. Essentially, for me, it was an introduction to a new type of music. Many years ago in junior high school in a small town in the Rockies my Spanish teacher was a newly arrived Cuban immigrant. He was an excellent teacher and that memory made me curious about this movie. This gathering of semi-retired musicians still has so much soul and if you don't get goose bumps at least once you are probably tone deaf. Unfortunately, I have seen only the Japanese edition here in Japan which has no English subtitles for my Spanish which has grown rusty. Although I can read Japanese subtitles I would prefer English ones for the lyrics.

This show (and disc) is everything good that's already been written, so I won't rehash it, but the one thing that keeps you from really enjoying many parts of it as much as you might like to is the horrific editing style. Some yoyo was obviously given a board with too many camera feeds, lenses, and angles, and a free hand to demonstrate childish fascination with them by switching from view to view to view almost as fast as the feet hitting the stage. While this might be appropriate for a 30 second commercial advertising the show, it really keeps you from enjoying the perspective of actually watching the show.

I think I will have to buy a new copy of this DVD, I watched mine so many times that it's starting to skip... :) Well, I believe this is THE ONE DVD an Irish-dance fanatic like myself can't live without. I know Riverdance was the first of it's kind (starring Michael Flatley, who else) but this is still my favorite show of all. Flatley is at his best. We get a lot of dance with a littlebit of singing and music. Riverdance just has too many other things going on instead of step dancing. Feet of Flames is more high-tech but to me this is still the one. And then there are all the new shows that keep popping up, but they all learned from Michael Flatley.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Video
This is possibly my favorite of all Daniel O'Donnell's many videos/DVDs, and I have many. It showcases some of the very best loved songs that he does in concert, and if you've never had the privilege of seeing him in person (poor you) this video is the next best thing. It is well produced and the photography etc. is great, but it is a performance that is unforgettable, and will leave you wanting more. And thank goodness, there are more videos/DVDs to get!! A great buy, well worth the cost her at Amazon!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this video and all his videos and cd's
I started watching Daniel about a year ago. I enjoyed all his shows on pbs.I ordered from amazon most of his cd's and videos, plus pledging to PBS to get a few of his items.I especially liked when he did the Rockin' Roll show.He has such a wonderful talent. When he sings, he sounds like the original artists, and not much of the Irish Brogue. He's a year younger then I am, and he moves better then I do.lol. Pls everyone I truly recommend that you get any of Daniel's Music.Keep it up Daniel.

Editorial Review

The ancient art of Tuvan throat singing may not sound like the most scintillating subject for a movie, but for those wishing to immerse themselves in a different culture or meet remarkable people, this inspiring and exhilarating Oscar-nominated documentary will be pure pleasure. This is a story no Hollywood screenwriter could have imagined. Paul Pena is a blind San Francisco blues singer who has played with the likes of John Lee Hooker and Jerry Garcia (he also penned "Jet Airliner," which Steve Miller covered). One night while listening to his shortwave radio, he picked up a Radio Moscow broadcast and heard the mesmerizing, gutteral sound of throat singing, which is peculiar to Tuva's region of upper Mongolian. Enthralled, he became a master of this obscure art form. Enter Friends of Tuva, a curious group that included Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, who likewise had become fascinated with Tuva. In 1993 they sponsored a San Francisco appearance by Tuvan singers. Pena was in the audience and met with the singers afterward. Pena so impressed the Tuvans that he was encouraged to come to Tuva and participate in its annual festival competition. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a poorly edited documentary; story misses the mark
I agree with the two other negative reviews here and am surprised there aren't more dissenting opinions. This movie made me feel embarrassed for the people in it. The topic would seem to have a lot of potential but the folks who are featured are repulsive and there is not enough in-depth exploration of the art to make it interesting. The story rambled, and the Americans (yes, that includes Paul Pena) behaved so awkwardly it was painful to watch. There was just a low-level vulgar tone throughout the whole movie. In many scenes, Paul totes a beer and looks like an indigent. He comes across as pathetic, socially tone deaf, and totally unworthy of his own talent. Mario was a boor - always coming up with something obnoxious, loud, and totally irrelevant to say. (Why the hell he was invited on the trip is a mystery.) The filmakers did a poor job of setting up the story and getting me to care about it or anyone in it. Don't bother with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff
The overwhelming impression I get from this film is: wow, these guys are alive! They are not just making their way through a boring life, they're out there doing interesting things, doing cool stuff, having adventures & generally living their lives to the fullest. The "they" that I refer to includes just about everybody in the movie, from Paul Pena to the guys travelling with him to Richard Feynman to the Tuvans that Paul meets and befriends.
1-0 out of 5 stars whiney, alcoholic, aging hippie makes ass of himself in another culture
I hate to be the only one to say it. but this movie sucked. It's very strange to me how the premise being about a bluesmen going to Tuva to connect with throat singers was abouts something else entirerly which was not inspirational. This movie is really about the stupidest americans going to another culture and being disrespectful.

I really enjoyed this dvd because it had more of the show filmed than in the vhs riverdance - the show. It is a little bit of an annoyance that I have to flip it over in the middle. I definately like Colin Dunne's dancing better than Michael Flateley's, Colin doesn't seem to steal the spotlight away from Jean Butler as much as Michael did. It gets my thumbs up. ... Read more

The popular group of three Irish tenors performs a lively program of ballads, folk songs, and Irish standards before an appreciative audience in Belfast. Ronan Tynan, Anthony Kearns, and Finbar Wright perform together and in solo spots (and John McDermott, who has performed with the group previously, sings two songs during a solo guest appearance). Decked out in cutaway coats and surrounded by an orchestra, the singers give full voice to such songs as "The Last Rose of Summer," "Fields of Athenry," "The Kerry Dance," and "Isle of Innisfree," a number whose appearance in a John Wayne film is duly noted. Those who fondly recall Van Morrison's collaboration with the Chieftains may find themselves fascinated by Finbar Wright's evocative version of "Carrickfergus," and the many devotees of Read more

It doesn't get more sublime than this. If anyone is still wondering what all the fuss was about, check this moment in reggae time controlled by the music's avatar, the late Robert Nesta Marley.Marley didn't write and sing songs; he channeled them. And he's clearly a man possessed here, witnessed by an ecstatic audience that's clearly been transported to another, better reality! 5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD NEWS!!!!! THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER!!!!
Yes I do have this Video and as good as it is, everyone wants it on DVD, so It will be.... soon.... From what I know, Ihear that its going to be released on the 25 of January, NOWthe date(S) of release has been changed before, I belive two or three times already, the recent one being Nov. 23. So Im not sure of its definate release but BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR IT!!! Some one wrote that they hope it will have bounus features, well I read that there are two versions of the release, One regular ( I think its just with the concert ) and the Deluxe edition with Carribean Nightssort of like Legend/Time Will Tell. So I have been doing resech on line at various sources and Bob Marley's Actual website always seems to be delayed, they dont even have Burnin the Deluxe Edition yet, NOR The Roxy Concert (at THIS Time.) So Surf the web and watch out for it!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
We are blessed that this concert was caught on film. Every song is amazing, and both he and the wailers were on that night. My favorite songs on the set are "Rebel Music", "War - No More Trouble", and "The Heathen". But even the other songs on this set are great. Beware because the version of "The Heathen" is amazing and you will rewind it many times to see it again.I can't count how much i've played this in the year i've had it. This video is filmed in a very historic castle in Ireland, and once in a while the acoustics become strange. But the talent displyed are well worth overlooking that. They are all great from the Harp Ochestra (yes, folks, harps can be quite loud!) and they come in all ages and styles which are highlighted in the tape. It's a lovely overview of the folk harp, which dates back in its present form to the 12th Century. But there is nothing stuffy or old about these folk... they rock! And the scenery and backgrounds are lovely indeed.Read more

CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS TAPE. I watch it at least three times a week and play it for everyone who comes in the house. Most people love it also. It is to be enjoyed the best when hooked up to a good sound system.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being there.
My only complaint about "Live at the Acropolis" is that it's not available on DVD.Having seen Kodo live in 1999, I feel the tape does a good job of capturing the "feel" of their performance.Even my toddler is transfixed. If you can see a live performance, do-- and sit as close as you can so you can watch their faces (many of which I recognize on the tape).

This 1998 television concert, produced in Dublin for U.S.exhibition, suggests a cheerful reversal of the formula behind the epochal ThreeTenors extravaganzas that became classical crossover behemoths during the'90s: instead of operatic superstars pitching a mixture of high art andcrossover fare to the masses, these lesser-known singers dress up venerable Irish parlor and folk melodies with symphonic backing and project them with operatic power and technique.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Absolutely delightful. Could not find a better concert except in person. It will bless your heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!Only the Angels Sing Better!
Where do I start?I first watched this on a PBS fundraiser, and I had to have it!With voices from John Mcdermott, Ronan Tynan, and Anthony Kearns you can't go wrong. When John Mcdermott sings "Danny Boy" itbrings goosebumps! You can just see a mother giving her son her blessingsto go to America, yet knowing the next time they meet she will probably bein the grave. When John sings "The Old Man", WOW! The song isabout John missing his own deceased father. After listening to the song, Iimmediately turned around and told my daddy I loved him. It really makesyou appreciate your father even more. Anthony Kearns is schooled in opera, and his voice proves it. His voice is powerful, and beautiful. When hesung "Grace", I was literally brought to tears. "Grace" is about a soldier, who is about to be executed in themorning, saying good-bye to his wife (who he just married). It is powerful!Ronan Tynan has a voice, that I am sure, can shatter glass. His voice isstrong yet beautifully controlled. I encourage viewers to research hisbiography--it is very heart lifting. When he sings "Town I Love SoWell", you can just visualize the land, and fall in love with ityourself! When the trio comes together and sing, it is an experience of alifetime."Danny Boy", when sang by all of them, is heavenly.Arefreshingly fun song, "Spanish Lady", lets the trio have fun,and interact with each other.I highly recommend this video. After goingthru a rollercoaster ride of emotions, I cannot sing enough praises(because I can't carry a tune in a bucket)! It is simply out of thisworld!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sight and Sound
My first exposure to The Irish Tenors was an 'accidental' clicking of the remote control one night when the local PBS station was conducting a fund-raising drive using the performance in Belfast. I was so moved bytheir performance that I searched the web for more of their work, disappointed that only one video was available. I ordered this video ANDthe CD of both the Belfast performance and the Dublin performance. Thevideo helps me get through my time on the treadmill, and the CDs getregular play on my computer. I'm still not sure which of the Tenors is myfavorite, as they are all so wonderful. The solos by Anthony Kearns, JohnMcDermott, and Ronan Tynan are wonderful, and the selections by the threeof them together are magnificent. The orchestral accompaniment raises theperformance of the old ballads to soaring heights. Kearns' eye contact withthe audience while singing "Mountains of Mourne," "EileenOg," and "Darling Girl from Clare" are priceless, and bringchuckles every time. McDermott's "The Old Man" brings tears to myeyes and a lump in my throat no matter how many times I experience it.Tynan's "The Town I Loved So Well" tugs at the heart, as does thetrio's "Only Our Rivers Run Free." An unexpected bonus on thevideo are the encore numbers that are not included on the CD, as well asthe most moving rendition of "Amazing Grace" that I'veheard.Read more

Daniel O'Donnell is better than wonderful and yes he is handsome and Mary Duff is beautiful. If you are a DOD fan then you must have this one.I agree they showed the audience quite a bit but I enjoyed seeing everyone so "into" these songs. This DVD does not have the fun stuff that I like between DOD and MD but I understand that. You could tell for sure that his heart was really into this show.It was nice seeing his mother and Majella there too.

I thought this was a wonderful tape.Daniel is a wonderful singer and very good looking!!!!!!!.I wished they would of showed him more than the audience.I first saw Daniel on PBS and fell in love with him.I can't wait to see him in Branson this November.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Have Old Ireland Over Here
There are some CDs that are more than outstanding, and this is one of them. Each song is perfect for Foster and Allen, and their renditions will blow you away. Some are lively5-0 out of 5 stars Foster & Allen's Ireland
If you love Irish music or you love looking at the beautiful Irish countryside, then you will really love this video.Mick Foster plays theaccordian and sings and Tony Allen sings and plays the guitar and all ofthe 32 songs are shot withspectacular Irish settings in the background. The video is 90 minutes and also includes Ireland's top step and setdancers. Some of the traditional Irish songs that I found to be thehighlights of the tape include The Village Where I Went To School, SweetForget Me Not, Katie Daly, Westmeath Bachelor, Rare Old Mountain Dew,Mursheen Durkin, Rose Of Mooncoin, Cottage By The Sea and Danny Boy.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the musicians and music
I bought the book that goes along with this DVD in Scotland a couple of years ago and realized that it was essentially interviews with some musicians from various streams of traditional Irish and Scottish music (including the Canadian versions). So I did not expect this to be a music DVD. I enjoyed it and have watched it several times. I like seeing the musicians in the native landscape and hearing them chat about various aspects of the tradition (I did fast forward through replays of one fellow who's a little too "out there" for my taste). This is a good DVD if you know what you're getting, and I also recommend the book of the same name. I also have the CD which goes with it and which is in fact, a musical compilation without interviews. I enjoy all 3. If you like any of these musicians, you'll like seeing them in an informal setting as portrayed in the DVD. If you just want the music, get the CD. If you just want to read what they have to say (in more detail), get the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Novice celtic music fan reviews Celtic Tides DVD
This is an excellent way to acquaint the newer Celtic music fan with some of the current artists' style and material. There are samples of Irish, Scottish, and Canadian musicians' work, and the interviews with the musicians give different perspectives on Celtic music.Although I had heard of Capercaillie, the Chieftains, Mary Black, and Old Blind Dogs and knew some of their work, I found the best part of this very professionally done DVD was being introduced to many artists new to me: Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIssac, Seamus Egan, Mary Jane Lamond. This DVD opened the door for me to more Celtic music than I would have had access to otherwise. The opening recording of Cookie Rankin singing to Natalie MacMaster's "Drunken Piper" alone was worth the price of the DVD! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about Celtic music.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
Like Reviewer Jon Mau, I feel disappointed and cheated with this DVD. I am a great fan of Celtic Music and expected something more than a documentary with snippets of music. OK for viewing ONCE, hardly something I would wantto see again. "Very misleading packaging! '" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patterson Triumphs at the Trump Taj Mahal!
This review is meant as a tribute to Irish tenor Frank Patterson, who passed away in June, 2000.Filmed about 1994 or 1995, Frank, wife Eily O'Grady and their son Eanon star at the fabulous Trump playground.Frankis heard singing the Rose of Tralee, Irish Eyes, My Son, with son Eanonplaying violin, Music of the Night, Battle Hymn of the Republic, LochLomond, Peggy O'Neill, Perhaps Love, Danny Boy and others.I heard Frankin concert twice, and not only was his voice golden, but also his warm andsincere personality. The Pattersons are joined by the FightingLeathernecks Pipe Band and the Donny Golden dancers.Don't miss thisvideo, and Frank's other videos, if you love fine singing.Frank, we'llmiss you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank Patterson triumphs at Trump Taj Mahal!
Frank Patterson was the best tenor from Ireland from the second half of the 20th-century.Sadly, his recent untimely death in June, 2000 will only make his star shine brighter in retrospect as we begin to appreciate whatwe too often took for granted: that here was a sweet, clear, well-placed,Irish tenor voice, with a sensitive, artistic intellect to match.I heardFrank twice in concert in 1998 and 1999, and worked with him on a mid-westPBS pledge telecast in August, 1999, and can attest to his warmth as aperson, and his God-given talents for musical communication. This is alesser-known video of Frank and his family performing "live" inthe mid-1990's at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ.He sings DannyBoy, the Rose of Tralee, Perhaps Love, an Irish-American medley and otherfavorites, as well as duetting with his talented son, Eanon, a violinist,on the touching "My Son."If you can listen to this with a dryeye, you're a stronger person than I. His talented wife Eily O'Gradyaccompanies them at the piano.Included are eight of the Donny GoldenIrish dancers and the Leathernecks PipeBand.Frank has several othervideos currently available, including the soon-to-be-released "GodBless America, An Irish Salute." Don't miss this Taj Mahal performanceif you're a fan of Frank's, or just of great singing.Highly recommended. And, Frank, we're going to miss you. ... Read more
