3-0 out of 5 stars Rooster cogburn movie-john wayne..
I didn't like this movie so much,I felt I lost interest in it.somewhere in the story line.Katherine Hepburns acting was good.I felt I got bored as they were tracking the bad guys.It dragged out to long.No excitement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wayne and Hepburn Take "African Queen" Route
The unique screen chemistry between John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn barely elevates a Western rehash of "The African Queen." Without Wayne and Hepburn, this belated sequel to "True Grit" wouldn't pass muster as a made-for-TV movie. It's too bad Peter Bogdanovich didn't take up the Duke's offer to direct the project -- he might have improved upon Martha Hyer's routine script. This was Wayne's next-to-last Western, but he would end his career in a blaze of glory with "The Shootist" (1976).

2-0 out of 5 stars Hatfields & the McCoys truth be told
The last review I read on the movie I found to be helpful because I was debating on buying this film.I just recently read an exstensive article on the famous feud that shed a little light on the subject. For all these years all I knew was what was refered to as the "yellow journalist view".I decided not to purchase the movie because if I watch anything I want it to be factual. If anyone knows of a dvd, vhs or book that is fact-filled, I'd be grateful if you would post that information so I can get the real historical story.Thank you in advance = )

3-0 out of 5 stars Unrealized Potential
I snapped up a used copy of this movie at the local flea market and couldn't wait to watch it.Having bought, viewed and enjoyed Sounder, Where the Lilies Bloom, Dollmaker, etc. I was eager to add this Southern drama to my collection. However, it paled in comparison to these classics. I was lost within the first 8 minutes of the film, but it really didn't matter due to the poor script, poor acting, poor score and poor cinematography. I really hoped for more but was sadly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Feud Movie!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for trying so hard
I have returned to this mini-series after over a decade. I bought Lonesome Dove on DVD a while back and enjoyed it more than I did on my initial viewing. I was not as fond of "Return" when it first aired for a few reasons: The absence of Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrae, Tommy Lee Jones not returning, and a somewhat retreaded narrative. After watching "Return" again, these elements are still problematic but the movie tries so hard to re-capture the spirit of Lonesome Dove that it does manage to succeed on its own merit. One does wonder if, instead of replacing the missing cast members with new actors (or new characters in the case of William Petersen's McCrae like character for example) it had focused on what it did have, namely Rick Schroeder and the Hat Creek Outfit. There are some early appearances of some soon to be famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Dennis Haysbert. I might have liked this better if it had just been its own film instead of an over-reaching sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dove Sequel Review
Although not actually based on a McMurtry tale, this cracking good story continues the saga of the Lonesome Dove crew is a very entertaining style. For purists, it will be something of a dissappointment. For anyone who likes a good story, it is great. Some actors play the same roles as in the original "Dove", but some are new to their roles but do an amazing job, and even have an amazing resemblence, so that one soon no longer focuses on the difference (Capt Call, for example). A good story in its own right; six hours of fine entertainment. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"The legend of Union Pacific is the drama of a nation, young, tough, prodigal and invincible, conquering with an iron highroad the endless reaches of the West."This stemwinder of a foreword strikes the pseudo-biblical/American Empire keynote for Cecil B. DeMille's "history" of building the transcontinent railroad.Only the bombast--and Arthur Rosson's second-unit direction--rises to the film's epic mission. The mustache-twirling villainy is right out of 19th-century melodrama, and the romantic triangle of Joel McCrea's railroad troubleshooter, Barbara Stanwyck's aggressively "Oirish" postmistress-on-wheels, and their black-sheep chum played by newcomer Robert Preston is a feeble distraction.Worse, the stars do their stuff on studio sets, in sterile isolation from the locomotives, Indians, and buffalo hovering slightly out of scale on process screens behind them. There's not one but two train wrecks (always a DeMille favorite); in every other department, John Ford had C.B. beat 15 years earlier with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An epic huge-scale western
I hate the way people look at a black and white classic film and automatically think that the movie has to be bad. People only see the poor special effects and the absense of color but never judge a book by it's cover. " Union Pacific " is has a great western backed by a terrific director, great actors, and a large scale plot. Definently a great movie and a true classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Carry Your Brains in Your Holster?...
This is artful entertainment; this is Cecil B. De Mille presenting an odd blend of celebration and deconstruction in his portrayal of the burgeoning American empire.Far-sighted statesmen and greedy corporate barons; vigilante "justice," racism, ridicule and praise for the durable Irish immigrants, a bolloxed love triangle,a spunky and noble Irish lass, a dissipated lover, a grim strong and silent type, a comic Mexican thug: De Mille's scriptwriters seem inspired to throw in as many elements to the plot as their imaginations allow; and the result isn't the mess you'd suspect but fascinating fun, some grippingaction sequences, and a lovely story of confused love.5-0 out of 5 stars deMille at his best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Geronimo The Legend
This movie is more than simplely good quality acting , by Wes Studi , Jason Patic , Roert Duvall, Gene Hackman and Matt Damon , it express the emotions of men on both sides who wanted only the best for their people ,and country.
5-0 out of 5 stars No Good Guys, Few Bad Guys
Geronimo successfully hid out from cavalry for an entire year before being captured. Starring Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman and Jason Patric, the movie is great in showing the deceptions the US government foisted on the Apaches - but it's primarily about the cavalry soldiers. I would have liked to see more from the Apache's side.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, ignorant review
However I have to address the ignorance of the reviewer from New York and his problem w/ the apparent "political correctness" of showing the American Indian in movies as a tragic people who were the victims of genocide and showing white settlers as land hungry, lying, treaty breakers. Guess what, that's what happened so get your head out of the sand. Those are some one-sided books you listed, and yes of course there were "bad Indians" who did some terrible things, guess where they learned it from? From the 500+ years that the Mexican, Spanish and European armies spent raping, pillaging, scalping and murdering the native people who lived here before you. Read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown if you don't believe me. Anyway, this movie gives both sides pretty evenly if you ask me. And I think we can give "Dances w/ Wolves" a break here. I mean how many "evil red skin" movies have been made? I think one "noble savage" flick was past due, and isn't really that out of line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ADVENTURE ALL THE WAY FOR KID'S
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST CHILDREN'S MOVIE WHERE EVEN THE ADULT'S ARE CARRIED AWAY. I AM ABOUT 60AND I STILL ENJOY THISMOVIE. YOU HAVE TO LOOK FROM THE EYE'S OF CHILDREN IT IS SO GOOD THAT YOU WILL FORGET THAT YOU ARE ADULT BUT WILL INJOY WITH THE LITTLE KIDS-THANKS TO DISNEY AND ONE OF THE LAST OF THE OLD LEGEND OF THE WESTERN WORLD JAMES GARNER-WE ARE PRIVILIGED TO SEE HIM IN THIS 21ST CENTURY LIKE THE OLD TOM MIX IN THE BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY WHEN HE WAS AROUND WITH REAL WYATT EARP GIVING HIM THE TECHNICAL DETAILS. I DONT WANT TO GIVE AWAY THE STORY WITH VAST OPEN SPACES AND THE SEA FOR THE CHILDREN WHO MAY HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE SEA BUT THE HIGH RISE APARTMENTS OF CONCRETE JUNGLE.-I AM SURE THEY WILL ALL INJOY AND LAUGH AT THIS ADVENTURE TRIP-CURTSEY OF DISNEY FILMS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining little Disney comedy-western
In the early '70's, James Garner made two films for Disney studios, "One Little Indian" and "The Castaway Cowboy."Of the two, "Cowboy" is by far the best: a slight but entertaining little comedy-western co-starring the lovely Vera Miles (who was also in "Indian").She plays Henrietta McAlvoy, the owner of a failing Hawaiian (known here as the Sandwich Islands) potato plantation whose native workers fish a nearly drowned deserter named Costain (Garner) out of the ocean. While Costain waits for a ship home to Texas, he hatches a plot to save the farm by turning it into a cattle ranch, using the Hawaiian workers as ranch hands.Of course, in Disney films of the era, there is always a villain, and "Cowboy" features Robert Culp as Bryson, a local businessman who romances Henrietta in order to get her land and when she won't sell, stoops to some nasty business to sabotage Garner's plan.4-0 out of 5 stars Castaway Cowby--a great movie!
I really liked this movie!!The scenery was beautiful (of course, it's Kauai and that can't be helped!) and the story line was interesting with all the obstacles James Garner had to contend with to help this family establish a cattle ranch. It also had a great ending and the good people won!My kids even enjoyed it (ages 4,5, and 8), so I must recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Western - classic Duke
Simply put - Honda is a classic Western movie that any Duke fan should watch. John Wayne puts in a great performance as the outcast Hondo who stumbles upon trouble between the settlers, US Army, and Apaches. Not a stranger to troubld Hondo manages to stay alive and protect others in this rather dangerous situation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good story line for hondo-John Wayne
Movie had a good story line.I like john waynes older roll movies.Good acting. And a tear jerker as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Balance for its time
John Wayne stars as Hondo Lane, a half-Indian message carrier and gunslinger in New Mexico. He first shows up at the ranch of Mrs. Angie Lowe after getting away from Apache attackers. This takes place in the ending days of the "Indian round-up" years, when only a few bands of Apache were left. Hondo takes a liking to Angie and her young son, but soon heads out to deliver the message.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie, Questionable Disney
The movie is outstanding. Fess Parker and the rest turn in excellent performances. This exciting story is based on the true to life incident that took place during the Civil War. From what I have heard there were only a couple minor changes in the recreation of the story. Walt Disney made wonderful movies during the Fifties and Sixties that were great for the whole family to enjoy together. I am ecstatic they are now releasing these movies to DVD. My only complaint is that there seems to be an issue with quantity instead of quality. They seem more interested in releasing a great number of movies than worrying about the condition of them. Now I'm am as anxious as the next person to get all their live action movies out but I hope they start taking the time to realize they need to monitor the quality control. I don't need the extras on this first release. Once they have released all the movies they use to run on "The Wonderful World of Disney" then they can go back and do Platinum Editions. I will be satisfied with just the movie since there are so many more they need to release like "Dr. Syn, alias Scarecrow" and "The Swamp Fox" that I can be satisfied with just the basics but I want the movie to have sharp picture and sound quality. Some of the recent live action movies have been great quality (e.g. Three Lives of Thomasina) and some have been poor (e.g. "The Journey of Natty Gann). I hope someone from Disney is paying attention to Amazons reviews because if they don't they may find their DVDs aren't selling so well. Fortunately this DVD picture and sound quality are nicely restored. There are no extra features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic filmmaking based on a true story
It's a real treat to see live-action Disney movies in all their glory, (back when movies actually meant something) unlike the special effects-ridden garbage of today. Of the meager number of films dealing with the Andrews Raid, I find this to be the most realistic portrayal by a long shot. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical and elegaic Western
It is impossible to watch this at time breathtakingly beautiful movie without sadness not least because what survives is a mere fraction of the movie made by the great William Wellman -the studio interfered in the picture excising great swathes of the footage Wellman shot and adding a ponderous voice over narration declaimed in sonourous mannner by Howard Keel which adds nothing to the picture whatsoever .2-0 out of 5 stars Wellman complicates civic history lesson.
'Missouri' feels more like a civic lecture than a film; it tries the impossible task of celebrating the American frontier spirit with a newly tolerant approach to Native Americans, who are kindly allowed do more than whoop menacingly.Well some are; this Western is only liberal to those Natives who agree to the white subjugation of their land - those who refuse are murderous, anti-family transgressors.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Frontier Adventure film
Clark Gable is excellent as a mountain man who leads a company of mountain men and trappers into the Blackfoot Indian Nation to trap beaver. It has humor, drama, action, and suspense. The "Run For Your Life" scenewhere Gable is given a choice by the Indians to either run or be killed isclassic. Ricardo Montalban is also in fine form as the Blackfoot Indian WarChief who hates the intrusion into his country by Gable and his company. Amust see for Clark Gable fans. Editorial Review

Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh the camptown lady sing this song dooda dooda!
so hilariously funny. bart (clevon little) plays one of the slaves and becomes the first black sherriff that offends the white town of rockridge and his first white friend jim (gene wilder) who is reffered to as the waco kid. No one would except the new sherriff and the bad guys would try to kill him buy sending mongo or lili von shtup. So funny that melbrooks should keep doing more and more funniest movies. another old movie of the late 70s but very good I give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work of art
(4.5/5 stars) This film is so good because we all know people who are racist or who harbor prejudices against an ethnic or religious group. Brooks lays all of this bare and then confronts this bigotry directly by making a black man and his Jewish partner the heroes of the movie. True, the Gentiles don't fair very well in the movie because it seems every one of them winds up being portrayed as racist, mindless or both. As a Gentile, this does not bother me because I believe the point Brooks was trying to make is that during the period in which this film takes place, the 19th century, the white majority largely viewed the non-white minority as second class. Certainly there were enlightened people who earnestly believed all races and classes should share the same privileges, but this was after the Civil War and long before the era of Civil Rights. Blacks were free, but were very far from being accepted in business or as part of white society as a whole. It is within this setting that Brooks devises an astute commentary on the topic of race relations. When the Governor (Brooks) makes Bart (Cleavon Little) sheriff (as part of a self-serving plan, incidentally), no one takes it seriously because the town sheriff is a person the townsfolk respect and upon whom they rely (or at least hoped) for safety. How will these whites come to terms with having a sheriff they do not respect, and whom they view as being naturally inferior and therefore incapable of protecting them? This is not one of those condescending, guilt-ridden movies that white people make wherein the black man with a heart of gold is redeemed at the end only because a sympathetic white character shows him some pity. (See: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Green Mile, etc.)No, in this movie, the black characters are seen as being clever, intelligent and talented enough to redeem themselves based on their own terms. Yes, there are racial epithets and stereotypes that are offensive and politically incorrect; however, these are used to illustrate the ignorance and intolerance of the offender rather than as a valid way of inciting the offended. Much of the humor is sophomoric and scatological, so one's appreciation of the film will likely be in direct proportion to one's proclivity for such humor. Listen for Frankie Laine singing the title song and watch for a cameo by Count Basie. The finale is rather weak and I wish Brooks would have ended it before it spilled over the set, which is why I stop short of giving it five stars. The anniversary DVD is presented in anamorphic widescreen and looks great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Western, Great Acting
I love the plot in this movie. I think that Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman did superb acting jobs in this movie. I can watch this movie over and over. It is not just your regular "gunfight in town" kind of western. Gene Hackman is so talented, he plays his roles so real that the movie viewers want to hate his guts. He is so believable in any role that he plays. Leonardo Dicaprio was superb as the impressive young man wanting his overbearing father's approval. Sharon Stone seemed like she has been slinging a gun all of her life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard boiled Western fantasy !
The Lady, played by Sharon Stone, arrives at the small town dominated by the cruel and capricious Herod (Gene Hackman) where a quick draw contest is being held. With a series of flashbacks we see why Lady wants to enter the contest--she is a woman set on revenge.
1-0 out of 5 stars This must be a comedy.Surely it can't be serious.
I have seen this film several times and still can not figure out if it's suppose to be a comedy or a drama. If it's a comedy, it's very bad.If it is suppose to be serious, it's even worse. The characters overact and are totally unbelievable. The plot is very predictable, and the dialog, well, it must have been written by a thirteen year old, if that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Horse Feathers!
Ok, so in was back in (?)....40 years have passed since I first saw this little opus, back then I WAS IN the Union Army, of course the next week I was Confederate, always camped near the "company hearth"...(tv set to you newbes).I even had a navy colt side arm and blanket bed roll, with the standard issue peanut butter n' crackers...hardcore huh?Anyway I first saw "Horse Soldiers" broadcast on "Saturday Night at the Movies", or was it at the drive-in?Duh...at that time I thought it was fantastic, outstanding, and keen!I especially liked the "southern trash" portrayal by Denver Pile and Strother Martin as comic relief. Now what do I think?Well I still think this is an interesting movie and I still like the little comic bit with Pyle and Martin. But this was not one of the "Dukes" best films by far.Bill Holden, as a "progressive" doctor who fights n competes "Duke" for the had of a "forgotten starlet" beauty as-love-interest is wasted.Lots o' rough n' ready action. But for the most part the whole effort is predictable and a little boring. The true story was amazing and worthy to be told...ah but then there would be no bloodly battle scenes! So it's an ok movie to fall asleep to...heah compared to "The Ring" or "Kill Bill"...I'd have to give it 20 stars!Ah youth, lost the plastic colt n' ma bed roll but still got a store o' peanut butter and hard tack!

Editorial Review

Marlene Dietrich purrs through sexy songs, and Jimmy Stewart succumbs to her sultry, androgynous ways in this seminal Western with more than a touch of comedy. He plays your average nice guy who turns out to have something special up his sleeve when confronted by a gang of bad guys. He tames the banditos and wins dance-hall girl Dietrich's heart with his nonviolent ways. You may think you have seen this before, and most likely you have. Based on the 1930 novel by Max Brand, the plot has been copied repeatedly. However, this atmospheric 1939 delight stands far above its imitators. This is the movie in which Dietrich, wearing full saloon-gal regalia, sings, "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have." It was remade with Audie Murphy in 1954 as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "You Sure Have A Nack Of Making A Stranger Feel Right At Home"
'Destry Rides Again' is a film classic from '39 offering a strange melding of light comedy with a traditional western theme. It also features a rather unexpected collaboration of two dissimilar big name stars, James Steart (Destry) and femme fatale Marlene Dietrich (Frenchy). It certainly wasn't a combination of talent I would have come up with for the romantic leads, but it worked well enough for this film.
4-0 out of 5 stars True western classic
I'm an unabashed Jimmy Stewart fan and I readily acknowledge Destry Rides Again as a classic which every western lover should see and will undoubtedly enjoy. However, I also like director George Marshall's Technicolor remake of this film with Audie Murphy, titled simply Destry. No, Audie Murphy was not as good an actor as Jimmy Stewart. But, given a good script and good direction, Audie Murphy was a far better actor than his many B movies would lead one to expect, and Destry was one of his best performances. The fact that director George Marshall chose to remake his black and white Jimmy Stewart hit, Destry Rides Again, in Technicolor with Audie Murphy as Destry clearly indicates that Marshall felt his original film could be equaled, and possibly even improved upon. In this reviewer's opinion, he was right. Both the original and the remake are very good westerns and both should be available on DVD for western fans to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic, Funny, Unexpectedly Touching Western With Stewart and Dietrich
"Mr. Destry," says Kent, the tough gambler who runs the wide-open town of Bottleneck, "before we start drinking, I think you and me oughta come to an understanding." "Well, I'm all for folks understandin' each other. That's a mighty fine idea, Mr. Kent.," says Tom Destry, Jr., the town's new deputy sheriff. "I'm glad you agree with me," Kent says, "so I'll start by telling you that I have a very peculiar hobby." "So have I," says Tom. "Mine's carvin' napkin rings. What's yours?" Kent looks puzzled for a moment. "Mine's collectin' deputy sheriff's guns," he tells Tom. "Whenever I meet a new deputy, I always ask him for his gun. And I ask 'em real nice." "Well, I'm sorry Mr. Kent, I'm afraid this here's one gun your collection's gonna be minus." "You mean I'm gonna have to take it?" Kent says. "If you can. Now hold on, hold on. Don't get excited here. I was just tryin' to tell ya that I ain't got any guns. You see, if I would have had a gun there, why, one of us might have got hurt - and it might have been me. I wouldn't like that, would I?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Enigmatic and Noble Western
1969's TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE is a forgotten but great film. Robert Blake is excellent as the Paiute Indian, Willie Boy, who is the object of a manhunt for a killing he committed in self-defense. The press gets hold of the story and turns it around into an Indian upraising circa 1909. President Taft is the object of the uprising on his trip out west according to the press. Robert Redford, the sheriff leading a posse knows better as he attempts to bring in Blake alive. It is a great study on misinformation by the press and racism. The direction by Abraham Polonsky methodically unfolds this simple yet powerful tale and remains captivating throughout. Conrad Hall's starkly beautiful cinematography enhances the solemn energy of this parable-like tale. Robert Redford, Robert Blake and Katharine Ross all give sincere performances. There is a strange enigmatic quality between the relationships of Blake and Ross and Blake and Redford. There is the hunter and the hunted contrasted against the loss of personal freedoms for a way of life and the loss of the very landscape unto which the story unfolds. Both Redford and Blake remain stoic characters but each manages to give a glimpse of humanity as they exude an aura of their true feelings for a way of life forever lost. They must either accept or perish in that change in one last noble gesture.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Wrong Photo on the Box !!!!
While I find this to be a decent yet minor film in the Redford cannon, my real problem is that the distributor (Good Times Video) is using a picture of Redford from "Out of Africa" on the box cover instead of a photo from "Willie Boy"... Hopefully when the DVD is released they will fix this embarassing oversight.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Quiet Tale Of Hunter Vs. The Hunted
An Unusual role for Robert Redford but one he plays very well with a rugged style as a tough sherrif who wants to live up to his father`s great reputation leads a massive manhunt for Wille, an Indian who killed in self defense who now with his girlfriend must stay one step ahead of Redford & Company relentless pursuit An Entertaing western with a strong message does stagger during the halfway mark of the film but the ending delivers with a classic shootout. Redford manages to pull off a convincing macho performance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Put on DVD!!!
Please put this interesting nostalgic James Garner movie on DVD so that humble people such as myseklf can afford it.Thanks!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Smart Comedy Starring James Garner & Lee Remick
This is a worthwhile James Garner film with a script that was written by someone who actually understands business, the stock market, and Wall Street. How many movies have you seen where the concept of what is and isn't a mutual fund is accurately discussed? Good supporting roles by Jim Backus, John Astin, and many other familiar character actors. An interesting side-note: Garner's character in this film is almost certainly the prototype for Jimmy Joe Meeker, one of Jim Rockford's many aliases in "The Rockford Files".

3-0 out of 5 stars Mildly amusing. . .
In The Wheeler Dealers, Henry Tyroon (James Garner) is a smooth operator, who while looking the part as a Texas businessman, has an Ivy League education. While in New York to line up his next big deal, his fancy is caught by Molly Thatcher (Lee Remick), one of the few business advisors on Wall Street of the feminine persuasion.Molly's superiors want her out of the company, so she's assigned a loser of a stock, to peddle to Tyroon."Universal Widget" is a company that has gone nowhere for decades, and making a sale to the amorous Tyroon, will be quite a challenge for Molly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Western That Started A Great Partnership
Winchester '73 wasn't the best, but it is probably the second best teaming of James Stewart and director Anthony Mann. And this film was the first film that the two made together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Purchase
I had long wanted to see "Winchester 73" for quite a while, due to the storyline and Jimmy Stewart headlining. I rarely buy a DVD before viewing it first, and when I do decide to purchase , it usually requires even more debate. I took a chance and bought it because I love westerns and I love Jimmy. Not only was I satisfied with the main plot, which was only a back-drop for the film's multiple sub-plots, but every scene was interesting which is difficult to pull off in any film. The movie was well paced and had good action sequences. I won't delve into any one scene because I don't want to give anything away, but I will say this: check out a young Rock Hudson in a small but memorable role as a...well you'll just have to see it for yourself. The best extra in this item is easy: the commentary by the one an only MR. STEWART. This DVD was well worth the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately a looked over classic...
The only complaint I have about this movie is it took me 34 years to see it for the first time.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's all been done before, and done much better.
I love Westerns, especially John Wayne Westerns. But, I found this movie to be lacking. In the movie, they tried to showcase a handsome, young actor (Jorge Rivera) who had no charisma or acting skills whatsoever. It was so bad that I almost stopped the movie. I kept watching, just to see if it would get better. It didn't. The movie in general is nothing special.Train robberies, cavalry soldiers, bandits. The same old same old, and poorly done. The best part of this movie is the majestic outdoor scenery.I could watch Westerns all day. But, not this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rio Lobo
My husband is pleased with anything with John Wayne in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you've seen "El Dorado" and "Rio Bravo", you've basically seen "Rio Lobo"
Not that it's bad, of course.Fans of the Duke will want to add "Rio Lobo" to their collection because it's classic John Wayne stuff. This time, the Duke is a Yankee Colonel who attempts to track down a pair of Union traitors responsible for the theft of Union gold shipments during the Civil Was and ultimately, the death of a Yankee Lieutenant who was like a son to Wayne's character in the movie.Along the way, he is aided by a pair of Rebs (Jorge Rivero and Chris Mitchum) and beautiful Jennifer O'Neill. The quartet find themselves facing overwhelming odds (don't they always?) as they attempt to get the bad guy, while at the same time helping the oppressed citizens of Rio Lobo.

3-0 out of 5 stars JENNIFER JONES FIRST MOVIE
"Frontier Horizon" a.k.a."New Frontier", is is a typical short Western actioneer at 57 mins.It is a formulaic film from the budget minded Republic Studios, from 1939.It is interesting only because it was the first attempt at film stardom for Phyllis Isley, aged 20 at the time, whose name was changed in 1942 to the better known, Jennifer Jones, at the request of David O. Selznick, her mentor and later husband.Read more
