2-0 out of 5 stars Long Winded
This is a very slow paced melodramatic movie which I thought was too "chippy" and "self-congratulatory" for the subject of the film, the plight of the Cheyenne who were driven from their homelands. There's the good Quaker woman, "friend Ness," who ran a school for the Indian children to learn the language of the white men and upon greeting the children would make them recite the alphabet on the spot... Then there's the bad officer in command who doesn't enjoy "babysitting" the Indians and doesn't think twice in showing force against them; Friend Ness' uncle who doesn't have much of a role, the good wise older captain who dresses not in military clothing like the rest of his troop, but rather in cowboy apparel, kind of like Marlboro Man; and the young hot-headed sargent holding a personal grudge against the Indians.
5-0 out of 5 stars Northern Cheyenne rates this movie!
I bought this vcr tape a few months ago.Sure the movie is NOT all correct for Cheyenne dress and habits but John Ford did bring the Cheyenne's plight and disgraceful treatment to the big screen.I view the movie at least once a month and never get tired of it.Excellent movie and beautiful scenes in the movie.Wish John Ford was alive to direct another such movie!3-0 out of 5 stars Did you know...?
That this film was shot on the Navajo reservation and the Indians in the film were Navajos? That the dialogue that was supposedly in Cheyenne was actually in Navajo and had little to do with what was supposedly being said?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirited, Thoughtfully Entertaining Western
Warlock is just a great all-around Western, boasting the talents of a great director (Edward Dmytryk), great cast (Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone), and great writing. It has a lot more emotional content than many Westerns, even though it has plenty of action and tension.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Widmark...Fonda...Quinn...Malone...Dmytryk ~ Warlock (1959)"
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment present "WARLOCK" (1959) (121 mins Color), under director & producer Edward Dmytryk, screenplay by Robert Alan Aurthur, book author Oakley Hall, musical direction by Alfred Newman, music score by Leigh Harline . . . . .cast includes Richard Widmark (Johnny Gannon), Henry Fonda (Clay Blaisdell), Anthony Quinn (Tom Morgan), Dorothy Malone (Lilly Dollar), Dolores Michaels (Jessie Marlow), Wallace Ford (Judge Holloway), Tom Drake (Abe McQuown Richard Arlen (Bacon), DeForest Kelley (Curley Burne), Regis Toomey (Skinner), Vaughan Taylor (Richardson), Don Beddoe (Dr. Wagner), Whit Bissell (Mr. Petrix), Bartlett Robinson (Slavin), J. Anthony Hughes (Shaw), Don "Red" Barry (Edward Calhoun), Frank Gorshin (Billy Gannon), L.Q. Jones (Jiggs). . . . .our story has a darker than most plot almost as "film noir" comes West, covering issues at a level rarely seen in this genre...Richard Widmark heads an array of outstanding actors that included Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn, in the supporting cast were Dorothy Malone, Dolores Michaels, Tom Drake, DeForest Kelley, Wallace Ford, Whit Bissell, Regis Toomey, and Frank Gorshin)...on with the plot, Widmark plays a reformed baddie who has done his share of causing havoc in the town of Warlock...now enters Fonda and Quinn respectively play a gunman and his club-footed business associate (no slouch with a gun himself) who are hired by the good people of Warlock to restore law and order...through a number of events Widmark then becomes the town's sheriff, representing its new conscience and regrowth, setting himself against Fonda and Quinn, who try to control the town...Dorothy Malone shows up accusing Fonda and Quinn of having murdered her fiance... Fonda and Quinn's relationship is strained beyond repair when Fonda falls in love with a respectable townswoman Dolores Michaels...great scene is the showdown between Fonda and Anthony Quinn against Frank Gorshin and three other ranch hands...all the performances are first-rate, with Quinn's portrait of a pathological Westerner registering most strongly..."Warlock"remains director Dmytryk's masterpiece and one of the great Westerns...Edward Dmytryk best known films from the pre-McCarthy period of his career were "Crossfire" (1947), for which he received a Best Director Oscar nomination and "Murder, My Sweet" (1944), as the latter an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's "Farewell My Lovely" (1975)....these films were made with expensive stars of the calibre of Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando, but apart from the memorable Western "Warlock" (1959), which he also produced, his work had lost much of the emotional urgency and psychological thrust represented by his early film noir "Crossfire" (1947)...after his film career tapered off in the 70s, he entered academia and taught at the University of Texas at Austin, and at the University of Southern California. He wrote several books on the art of film-making, Dmytryk died in 1999, aged 90.

5-0 out of 5 stars you know nothing about Tuco
One of Leone's most memorable flicks,Clint Eastwood reprises his role for the third time as the man with no name,or Blondie,in this flick. In this installment,a kind of Rat Race-type situation occurs where a lone ranger,a robber, and a baddie get involved in a plot to get $50,000 first. There begind a perilous journey of betrayal, murder, and revenge.I especially like the character Tuco, with his quick, fast wit and hillarious habits,it's hard not to laugh.Lee Van Clef is also brilliant as angel Eyes, the baddie in the flick who tries to take out Blondie and Tuco. It's a roller coaster ride to the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buffalo Soldiers
Too many Americans are still ignoirant about the role of the Black "Buffalo Soldiers" that did a great deal to tame and build the West. This is a very good movie with stout portrayal of the position the black soldiers were in, fighting the Indians on the plains and their own fellow soldiers and the prejudicial system of the day.5-0 out of 5 stars A great choice for DVD
This is surely a great title for a DVD release. It's no doubt one the best films by Mr. John Ford. The story is thrilling and remains undated. The battle scenes are great fun. It comes after "The Seachers", in importance, among other great Ford's films. Finally, if that's not enough, just the sight of Jeffrey Hunter in uniform and his fantastic set of blue eyesin Widescreen, would be worth buying two copies. Can't wait! Bring it right now!

5-0 out of 5 stars A courageous film
What stands out for me about this film is not simply that it deals with racial prejudice at a time when blacks were still struggling for their basic civil rights (there were at the time other films that already dealt with this racism), but rather that it unflinchingly confronted perhaps its most sensitive and poisonous manifestation, namely the fear of whites, especially white males, of the black man ravishing the white woman. In this film, we are set up with the classic stereotype of such fantasies, young, blonde and virginal, and then confronted with the fear and hatred that the accusation against the benighted Sergeant Rutledge of having committed a brutal rape and murder against such a victim evokes in all of its raw ugliness. Moreover, I think that the film is still relevant in this regard in that it suggests that we should ask ourselves how much of a role this fantasy continues to play in the racism against the black male that remains today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ox-Bow Incident Review
This is a fine example of the Hollywood of Old type of movie. It is timely for today since we are basically doing the same thing as the characters did to the three cowboys on the Trail. They, similar to us, act on the wrong information and hang the three cowboys.Later on they learn that no one was killed and the real men are in custody.

5-0 out of 5 stars CAN A WESTERN BE A NOIR?
YES! In fact there are a number of Westerns that can justifibly be called noir,"The Furies","Persued",and "Blood on the Moon",just to name three."THE OX-BOW INCIDENT" is a one in a lifetime film experiance. The acting, direction(William Wellman) and screenplay(Lamar Trotti),from a Walter VanTilburg Clark novel is all top-notch.Henry Fonda (Gil Carter) and Henry Morgan (Art Croft) are the leading players in this chilling tale of "frontier justice',in the 1880s'Nevada territory.Frank Conroy,Jane Darwell,Dana Andrews,Anthoney Quinn, and Leigh Whipper stand-out in the supporting cast. The commentary is very good, especially that portian that deals with the problems director Wellman had in getting this film made.An excellent film and an excellent DVD from Fox.

4-0 out of 5 stars Daring attempt
This movie is truely exceptional. It is an exception to those westerns made during that decade. This movie didn't showcase some wonderful unrelated landscapes from Monument valley, any songs, any love triangle, any revenge or any unwanted gunfight etc. What it potrayed was a short simple story with a shocking twist at the end. Being a western movie and specially Henry Fonda fan everybody should watch this movie. And believe me this movie specially the story (written by Walter Van Tilburg Clark - as a Novel) and the stunning performances by Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews and last but not the least Anthony Quinn will be a breeze of fresh air to the mainstream western prototypes (with all due respects to Wayne's Classic Westerns). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The one you have been waiting for as Lou gets the upper hand
Abbott & Costello make a rather unusual western with "The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap."In this 1947 comedy Bud is Duke Egan and Lou is Chester Wooley, a pair of traveling salesmen who stop in the wild town of Wagon Gap, Montana on their way to California. When Fred Hawkins is shot and killed the boys get charged with the murder. This is where this film comes up with the unusual twist.Someone finds a Montana law that says the winner of a gun duel has to assume the debts and dependents of the dead man. This means that the Widow Hawkins (Marjorie Main) and her seven children are now the responsibility of Chester (it would not be as funny if it were Duke, trust me).So while the Wistful Widow works Chester from sunrise to sunset to take care of the dependents, the saloonkeeper works Chester at night to pay off the dead man's debts. Then Chester makes a remarkable discovery: no one dares to shoot him because that would mean they would inherit the Hawkins clan.Suddenly Chester is the Sheriff of Wagon Gap and starts cleaning up the town!5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE TEAM'S BEST FILMS
THE WISTUFL WIDOW OF WAGON GAP (1947)
5-0 out of 5 stars ONEOFABBOTT& COSTELLO'S BESTFILMS
Classic western spoof with Bud and Lou. The film was inspired by a real-life law. The film opens with the title: "MONTANA-IN THE DAYS WHEN MEN WHERE MEN. WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS". The two exceptions ofcourse are Abbott and Costello playing travelling salesmen 'DUKE EGAN &CHESTER WHOOLEY". When the duo arrive in the town of Wagon Gap, Lou isaccused of killing the town drunk and gambler "HAWKINS". Put ontrial the team is sentenced to take care and provide NOT ONLY the"WIDOW HAWKINS" (Marjorie Main - of the 'MA & PA KETTLE'series of movies), but for his brood of SEVEN children. Later, Costellois commissioned to the job of the town sheriff, since NO ONE wants to killhim for fear of inheriting the 'HAWKINS' clan.Look carefully at one ofthe co-stars. He is Gordon Jones who later co-starred with the team onceagainon their 1950s TV series - 'THE ABBOTT & COSTELLO SHOW'. ... Read more

This isn't your standard Court Jester, Inspector General or Walter Mitty Danny Kaye.More serious and dramatic but still great! You will love this movie if you love Danny Kaye.Gives you a different glimpse of him, but just as good as the Danny Kaye standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!
Like other reviewers, this movie was a childhood favorite of mine- I was only 4 when I first saw it, but I actually remember some of the scenes from that first viewing. What a treasure to have it on DVD-- with such a beautiful transfer. Colors are vibrant, the acting is great, story is a "classic", and the music is out-of-this-world.Get it if only for the Louie Armstrong performances with Danny Kaye.If you don't own a large-screen TV, this movie will make you want to get one! Great for family viewing to introduce your kids to New Orleans/Big Band sounds and teach them a little about history (polio epidemic of the 40s/50s).

4-0 out of 5 stars Its almostChristmas & time for a cowboy movie.
It's a good one too. It's a remake & better than it's predecessor from 1936, which looks old despite a fine performance by Walter Brennan as one of the bandits, Gus. This version of The Three Godfathers is old also, made it 1948. But it is a typical Wayne/John Ford colaboration which makes it fresh & alive. It is not the slower, ponderous, dark version of 1936. That older movie is not bad it is just not quite as good. There are some

The Holidays...what's a Western lover to do? Angels and Santa have taken over the VHS and DVD players. It's still 2 weeks before Christmas, and we are already having withdrawals for the sound of horse hooves and six shooters, and we want to see some great Western Vistas instead of all that snow! Fear not...it's "Three Godfathers" to the rescue. It's a Western AND a Christmas story all in one, that should make everybody happy! And..It's not just any old Oater, it's a John Ford Western. And what a gift he gives us. He has rounded up his usual greats including John Wayne, Ward Bond, Mildred Natwick, and Jane Darwell. Harry Carey had recently passed, and the film is dedicated to him, but Harry Carey Jr(younger viewers will know him as old Marshal White from "Tombstone")now joins the team, and is great, and Pedro Armendriz is always a treat in any film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pardners
"Pardners" has always been my favorite Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie. The combination of this famous team's humor and song, along with a western setting make for an enjoyable time. Some excellent character actors in supporting roles, including Jeff Murrow, add to the western action. I'm glad others have commented on the closing where Dean and Jerry speak directly to the audience about continuing to come and see their films. I saw this in a theater just months before their famous breakup and the irony has stayed with me. Optimist that I am, I kept hoping for M & L to reunite for more films. Never happened, but thankfully we have this and other Martin & Lewis films on tape and hopefully one day, restored on DVDs.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dean and Jerry on the Range
"Pardners" (1956) was Martin and Lewis' next-to-last film and it remains among their best. A loose remake of Bing Crosby's "Rhythm on the Range" (1936), this breezy western comedy has the duo in good form, with a strong supporting cast featuring Agnes Moorehead and Lon Chaney Jr. Unlike "Hollywood or Bust" (the team's farewell appearance), Dean and Jerry were on speaking terms during the production and their on-screen rapport is evident from beginning to end. One of the film's most memorable (and ironic) scenes has Martin and Lewis taking aim at the final credits, while assuring their fans that they will continue to make beautiful cinema together. It didn't turn out that way, but you have to admire Dean and Jerry for breaking up at the height of their phenomenal success -- rather than face the downhill trajectory that greeted most comedy teams.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of Martin & Lewis
This video is hard to find, except through Amazon.Worth the price. Soundtrack is one of the better ones, if you can find it, as well. Dean Martin, for western fans, was a very good gun handler (as well as a finesinger) and you get a glimpse of hisskill in this flick.I agree withthe previous reviewer, the end credits are fun to watch. As always, theplot of M & L movies are far-reaching, but if you are watching a M& L movie for the plot, go back to reading Webster's Dictionary.Ifyou half-way like M & L, half-way like comedies or half-way likewesterns, you'll enjoy this movie. Sidney Poitier made his directing debut with this 1972 action comedy with an edge to it. Made at the height of the Black Power movement in America, the film has an unmistakable militancy in its story of a wagon-train guide and a con man who team up to throw a posse of white nightriders off the trail of escaped slaves. One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign.Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. 5-0 out of 5 stars A haunting and disturbing movie drama when it first came out
I have read a number of good reviews of this DVD on this site, especially the one written by Dennis Littrel. I will thus only add a small personal impression. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out and being troubled by the sight of the 'good guy' so disturbed and unsure of himself. This is not what we were expected to see from Western heroes. Also troubling was the possibility that the good guy somehow might not win. Also troubling was the involvement of the good guy with another woman in a way which could not be understood by a very young person. If he had a fiancee then what was he doing with this elderly Mexican woman?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Western Farce
The Trinity movies were western comedies which succeeded not because of production values (they didn't have any) but because they were hilarious. Terrence Hill and Bud Spenser made them so. That made a "son's of" movie a dangerous prospect. Could a new cast of characters recapture the hilarity?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Flic
I first saw this movie when I was 10 and was completely captivated.Of course, I've seen this movie on tv multiple times over the years and I never fail to fall under the movie's spell.
4-0 out of 5 stars Strange movie invites unfairly harsh criticism
I had just seen Houseboat and really wanted to catch another Sophia flick. There is a criminal lack of her movies on DVD.With all the harsh criticisms of this movie, I bought it hesitantly only because I couldn't find many Sophia movies. There's a strange flavor to this movie, almost as if something about it was experimental. The story doesn't have a strong punch line by the end, but it does come to a logical conclusion that some may not find satisfying, but I did.1-0 out of 5 stars Somebody fell asleep at the wheel
It is often fun to overly critize films made in other decades that often reflect a different attitude to what worked for audiences then.My memory of this film as a teenager stands up better than my views upon seeing this DVD resurrection. For instance, as soon as I saw the name Kurt Krasner in the credits this time, I recalled that it was a common practice to use certain actors over and over again, even though they were badly miscast each and every time.Mr. Krasner is cast as a French policeman in Timbuktu. The actor was often cast in exotic, foreign sounding roles. The problem was that, in Legend of the Lost, he never attempted a French accent. In fact, he never changed his accent or his delivery in any of his films. Ever! The fight scenes between Brazzi and Wayne (there are far too many of them) are amaturish; one camera angle actually shows Brazzi throwing a punch that misses Wayne's jaw by a good 12 inches!Where was the director, Henry Hathaway, a seasoned vertan, when this happened? The soundtrack element used for this DVD transfer was very poor; it has a thin, tin-like quality.I've heard better in the various TV versions of this film. I find that to be true of many DVD's.I'm glad I rented this DVD rather than simply relying on my memory and buying it outright. That saved me some hard-earned money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Last of the Dogmen - Great Movie!!
This movie is one of my favorite's of all time! The story starts with a prison bus crash. Three of the convicts excape into the wilderness or Oxbow as it's called in the movie. Tom Beringer plays a bounty hunter/drunk that has all but given up on life since the death of his wife. His father-in-law/sherriff hires him to track down and bring the convicts back. As Beringer is almost ready to catch the convicts, something strange happens and all he finds is signs of blood, a patch off a prison shirt, and a broken arrow. Great plot that combines modern day with "what if?" from historical accounts. A great Native American related film and A must see for all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope they make more Western fantasies
This is my first and by no means, last, Western fantasy. While the concept of discovering a 130 year old tribe of Cheyenne who are the last survivors of the infamous Sand Creek Massacre is highly unlikely, it made for an excellent storyline.Plus, the director made the film as authentic as possible hiring only Cheyenne actors and actresses for the parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best modern day western
This is an excellent film.An all time favorite and classic. The scenes are beautiful, acting is great, makes you want the story to be true. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Different Western
Raoul Walsh, one of the greatest action movie directors ever, must have decided to turn the Western genre, which he knew well, on its ear. The King and Four Queens is not your typical Western, or your typical Walsh film.
4-0 out of 5 stars KING CLARK
A desperado, Dan Kehoe (Clark) seeks refug in the little ghost town of Wagon Mound; only the four wives and mother of the McDade brothers (who are dangerous gunmen) inhabit the town...........A romantic Western with mystery and comic element therein, its an entertaining little flick; Gable shows us just why he is truly one of the screen's all-time great personalities. An amusing, fascinating and interesting albeit amoral and rather tawdry Western. The film develops as a superficially cynical excercise in the rival attractions of sex and money.Gable's charm as the ruffian-hero is more realistic and resistible that the script assumes, and in spite of a few moderately vigorous action scenes, the story is largely played out through dialogue exchanges with have little pace or spirit.Jo Van Fleet as the embittered Ma McDade plays her role with a harsh theatrical-like emphasis which gives her scenes a certain edge.Of the four queens, Parker is the most intelligent; the one you know he'll eventually gravitate to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maltin has it wrong. Good movie.
Perhaps Mr. Maltin doesn't like amoral tales, but there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Gable's character is amoral. The wives (3 of the 4 are widows, not knowing which husband survived his criminal past) are amoral. And the bible thumping mother in law, protecting money stolen by her sons, has got to be seen as amoral.Very good character development. A taunt tale. Gable looks like his classic, powerfull self. The actresses, though basicly unknowns, put in fine performances - and are easy on the eyes to look at, as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not their fault
I'm reading a lot reviews here that dog the qaulity of the image on this WB DVD, they could have cleaned up some of the scratches, however I'm not sure how many are aware that the original studio elements on Stagecoach are lost. All surviving prints were taken from a single print owned by John Wayne himself. So what ya see is what ya get on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take the stagecoach to Lordsburg in this Great Western
Stagecoach (1939) was John Ford's first western for several years and his first in Monument Valley. Ford insisted and won the argument with Producer Walter Wagner that B-movie star John Wayne should play the hero known as the "Ringo Kid"

Editorial Review

Not to be confused with Sam Raimi's flamboyantly stylized Western of the same name, this made-for-cable adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel is a lean, taut pioneer adventure set in the wilderness of the northern Midwest. Sam Elliott, sporting his trademark bushy mustache and eyebrows so thick they keep the rains off his face, stars as the mountain man and tracker Con Vallian. Tom Conti is Scottish storekeeper Duncan McKaskel bringing his wife Susanna (Kate Capshaw) and son from Pennsylvania to a homestead in Wyoming. When a scraggly gang (led by the wonderfully sleazy Matt Clark) marks the family as an easy target, Vallian makes himself their gruff guardian angel, partly out of attraction to Susanna ("You're a handsome woman," he likes to repeat). Pride, jealousy, and rivalry make Duncan and Vallian uneasy allies and Conti's musical lilt is a marvelous contrast to Elliot's gravely drawl. Capshaw is somewhat colorless but comes to life in a surprising explosion of angry violence. The beautiful landscape culminates in a stunning meadow where the homesteaders find their cabin, a location that must be the closest thing to heaven on Earth, but for the devils still on their trail. 2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I bought this movie because I thought it would be like the movie version of Louis L'Amour's "Conagher". Unfortunately, it is a far cry from that movie. The Quick and the Dead was too predictable, the dialog was stilted and unrealistic, and the characters...well, they were too much "in character" and not believable. I am curious how faithful the script was to the book. If the movie is as faithful to the book as "Conagher" was, then I apologize to the movie makers and will hold a grudge with Mr. L'Amour instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good are Good and the Bad are Bad:No Grey!
I'll admit that the simplicity of this L'Amour tale of Easterners being protected by an anonymous-type stranger on the wagon trail out west has to please.Sam Elliott is the best he can be, as are the supporting characters, Good and Bad.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Quick and the Dead

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun in the old west Ohara/Wayne style
Excellent quality Widescreen DVD.Very good audio.Very funny story that Ohara played to the T. The indians were shafted again- though at least one "pale face" (Wayne) was in thier corner to help deliver them some dignity (Thank You).
5-0 out of 5 stars A great DVD of the Duke
Finally a great DVD of this great movie!! The colour and the whole presentation is what is should be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad Film Quality
While this is one of my all time favorite movies, but the actual picture quality is terrible! It looks like they made the DVD from the aged original film and they did a lousy job of converting the format. It look like they didn't clean the film up at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars John Wayne, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond - how can it miss?
But it does.Vera Ralson is part of the problem, she's pretty but bland in the role of Wayne's new bride who sweet-talks him in going to the title state so they can run a riverboat business, but the real weakness is the overall look of the film.An overabundance of rear projection and rather obvious indoor/outdoor scenes gives this 'outer' a distint fake feeling.Duke is amicable in the lead, Bond makes a sturdy villian, Brennan is fine doing his Gabby Hayes impersonation and the film has a rousing climax, but it never rises beyond it's B origins

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to potential
Dakota is a film loaded with potential that never really comes together.Big names like Walter Brennan (Rio Bravo, Red River) and Ward Bond (The Searchers) join John Wayne in an interesting plot. The problem lies withthe directing and screenwriting. At times the screenwriter confusesconfusion with action.During the finale you can see what looks like thesame wagon tipping over three times (different angles/reversing film). Attimes it is difficult to understand what the characters are saying, and whythings are happening.Die hard Wayne fans will want to buy this film, butmany will probably give it a pass. ... Read more
