4-0 out of 5 stars The way that you wander is the way you choose, the day you tarry is the day you lose
Jeremiah Johnson has always been one of my favorite films and one that comes highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Imagining memories.
This story gives me the chance to get back to nature the way it waswhen the free trappers still roamed the west.My whole familyloves watching it time and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars starkly beautiful
There is a poetry to this movie that has stayed with me - from the first time I ever saw it, when it first came out. From the haunting strains of Indian flutes as we first see the ferry bringing Jeremiah to the first stop in his new life - a trading post outfitting those intrepid or crazy enough to disappear into the wild - to the end, when he has weathered more than anyone today probably could survive, we are absorbed into a world that will never be possible again. Trappers routinely sleep in deep snow without tents and without freezing to death; a mountain man, mauled by a bear and incapacitated, calmly writes out his last will and testament, leaving his rifle to "whutever finds it - Lord hope it be a White man", and freezes to a tree; another mountain man shaves his head to prevent himself being scalped.

Editorial Review

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a widescreen presentation
A great film however if you are going to promote the DVD as widescreen at least make it widescreen and not standard format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you're not a fan of Westerns...
... you may want to give this one a go.I'm amazed to realize that it's 37 years old; I think this film is going to end up among the classics when it gets a little older.I'm not a big Western-watcher at all.But I end up watching this one when it's televised because the cinematography is marvelous. It's what I loved when it first came out (I'm revealing my age) - that and William Goldman's screenplay. For those reasons, even if you don't care for shoot-em-ups, it's worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butch and Sundance Ride into Film History
Butch and Sundance is an amazing wonderful film: in this ultimate collectors edition it sparkles like a beautiful jewel. The package is complete (I always thought the 1997 version was missing William Goldman's commentary - this one has it!): if you were a fan of this terrific western when it first appeared in the first flush of 1969-70 you will not be disappointed to revisit with Butch and Sundance and their hole in the wall gang. Its also a great chance to listen in again as 3 beautiful stars and countless other key personnel recount what it was like to put this wonderful film together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Randolph Scott wrestles with fate in this Fritz Lang western
It might seem strange that Fritz Lang would make a western, since his forte was clearly the crime film, but then you remember that his first American film, "Fury," was about a lynching and you realize that the Old West has long been an ideal location for playing out the major themes of the American identity."Western Union" is the story of the first trans-continental telegraph line being strung across the west, which represents the director's interest in modern technology, although clearly this is retrospective in the same way that "Metropolis" was futuristic.Vance Shaw (Randolph Scott) is fleeing a posse and when his goes lame he ends up with Edward Creighton (Dean Jagger), a telegraph engineer who hires the outlaw as a scout.Richard Blake (Robert Young) is a surveyor who arrives from the east and takes a spark to Sue Creighton (Virginia Gilmore), the sister of Edward, which sets up the film's love triangle.Meanwhile, Confederate raiders led by Jack Slade (Barton MacLane) are stealing cattle and disrupting the building of the telegraph line.Shaw is caught in the middle of this as well because he has a relationship with Slade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broken Chain for your Eric Schewig collection is a must
I am a huge fan of Eric Schweig so I may be a little partial to any of his flicks.I did buy this movie from e-bay for my ERIC collection, (13 flicks total) AAH!! It wasn't bad for a TV flick. What can you really show viewers in just aone or two hour movie?I think it showed how supporting the backstabbing British did the 6 nations in. Eric did a great job in his role and he's not too bad to look at either. LUV YA, ERIC! I think more flicks like this need to be made to show the truth in what the white man did to the Native population. From starving them, paying for indian scalps, shipping them to Florida ,to infecting them with smallpox on blankets. You can get farther in this world with peace and compassion than fear and ignorance.PEACE:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Rootin',tootin' Grable legs it in Western farce
First time around this Preston Sturges (writer, producer, director)movie was given the thumbs down by most of the critics. However, today it is hailed asclassic comedy, with a classy leading lady - Betty Grable! Shethe cutest li'l ole gunslinging saloon girl who shoots a judge (where itdon't show) and legs it with her pal, Olga San Juan, to the next town alongthe line where she poses as a schoolmarm. Betty only has two numbers inthis one, but her comedy performance is first-class, especially aided byMargaret Hamilton, Sterling Holloway, and a whole host of oldtimers. Greatfun- if you don't take it too seriously! A very underrated PrestonSturges production. And it's a pity Grable wasn't allowed to do more wackycomedies like this. She's a natural. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This gorgeous 1943 family film stars Roddy McDowell as a Colorado rancher's son who takes a shine to a colt named Flicka and chooses to train her. The boy's father (Preston Foster) isn't happy about the idea: the horse is an offspring of a stormy mare who may not be right in the head. For a while, Flicka seems determined to prove the rancher's point, fiercely resisting young McDowell's efforts at domestication. But persistence and love win the day, and Flicka grows up to be a magnificent animal and friend. The film was shot by director Harold Schuster and cinematographer Dewey Wrigley as if for the ages, marrying such perfect elements as a Technicolor sweep of the beautiful Rocky Mountains setting with a wonderful story, plus McDowell's charismatic earnestness. Based on the Mary O'Hara novel, this film was popular enough in its time to inspire a couple of sequels, though the original best stands up as a perennially worthy adventure tale for kids ages 5 and up. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody is not Trinity butbetter.
I am sure that if you are looking at this then you are a fan of the trinity movies. The Nobody character is based on Trinity but with much more refined.Terence Hill's Nobody has a certain directness and isa much fuller character.Henry Fonda's career in spaghetti westerns often gets overlooked and that is a real shame. If you compare this to his portrayal of Wyatt Earp then you can see that the love of the western never left him. This is much more the Fonda that one loves rather than the villian in "Once upon a Time in The West" (itself a great film).I love showing this to people that have never seen it. They usally like it and then I move on the the Trinity films.

I first saw this movie when it was first released to theaters. This movie was way ahead of its time, a movie about Native Americans that showed them in a good light. The movie was filled with action, love, compasion, and much more. I loved it in 1975 and still love it today. This movie is good for nearly all age groups, has minor bad language, some killing (of course) but without blood being shown etc. You find yourself tearful at the end, a mix of tears of joy and sadness. ... There are no words to describe how SLOW this movie was from beginning to end, but let me try anyway so as to give people a fair chance to avoid it and thus try and prevent their day/evening from being ruined: the film deals with the story of a schoolteacher from New England who meets a Virginian cowboy on the plains of Wyoming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Fine 3rd Calvary Movie
The third and last of the calvary is also the weakest. That's not to say its a bad film.Rio Grande explores the Army officer's conflicted devotions to his family and to his uniform. The first half is quite good with Wayne contending with having both his son and his estranged wife (who's house he burned down in the Civil War) underfoot as he tries to do his job fighting the Indian Wars. Unfortunately, the second half of the film is a bit of a letdown.Instead of further developing the fascinating character of Wayne as an excellent soldier and poor father and husband, Ford gives the viewer far too many singing cowboy interludes and an elaborate and unconvincing fight sequence and daring rescue mission. Can't help but feel Ford and Wayne ducked a great opportunity in favor of easy action entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yellow Stripes On Britches Blue
I am in total agreement with those who don't regard this piece of filmwork as something "lightweight" or "throwaway" when compared to "Fort Apache" or "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". Nor is it "just" a "sleepwalking" effort by John Ford to gain financing from Herbert Yates at Republic for a Technicolor production of "The Quiet Man" (which it DID succeed in doing).
4-0 out of 5 stars RIO GRANDE: WAYNE-O'HARA-FORD!
In order to be able to film "The Quite Man",director John Ford was forced by Republic Studio head Herbert Yates to make this John Wayne-Maureen O'Hara Western, which is the third and final calvary epic Ford filmed in a three (3) year period(1948-'50)the other two being "Fort Apache",my favorite all-time Western, and the technicolor classic,"She Wore A Yellow Ribbon",all three having John Wayne in the lead.Yates felt that an Irish romantic-comedy,as did other studios who refused to finance the project, which they felt would be a box office loser! Were they wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars The dawn of the American age!
Here,John Milius has put together a truly enjoyable film! For the serious fan of historically-based movies, this one may be a bit overly-idealized, in the blatant patriotism...and that is why I loved it! This movie is a refreshing bit of optimism and national pride, in a time when it is "fashionable" by self-proclaimed "enlightened" critics to disparage America's national heritage. This negative and dysfunctional trend has gotten quite tiresome, and its about time someone made a purely patriotic film such as this!
2-0 out of 5 stars --Ridiculous portrayal of President Teddy Roosevelt--
I had looked forward to seeing THE ROUGH RIDERS, but my expectation for a good film was not met by this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Movie
While having minor inaccuracies to the historical record, "Rough Riders" is an excellent overview of the Volunteer Cavalry operating in Cuba, and a general review of the Cuban invasion itself. One example of a minor inaccuracy is that Maj Frederick Funston was no longer in Cuba by the time of the invasion, but was actually in the Philippines; another is that MG Joe Wheeler had a long flowing beard; nor did Tiffany get killed in action... ok, so what?Regardless of the minor problems, it has a lot of REAL accuracy... the death of Bucky O'Neil at San Juan Hill; Hamilton Fish killed in action during the approaching skirimishes; the brash, rash caricature of Theo Roosevelt (he HATED the nickname "Teddy"); Stephan Crane portrayed as the wretch that he was, though the drug addiction part is only rumor; even the quotes from Wheeler that he was chasing "them Federals," along with his son's admonition that they were Spaniards, is accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Fastest Gun Alive": The Greatest B&W Western of All Time
The Fastest Gun Alive (1956), starring Glenn Ford, Jeanne Crain, and Broderick Crawford--directed by Russell Rouse--is the greatest B&W Western film ever made.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fastest Gun Alive
I usually don't like westerns, but this one really caught my attention. It doesn't thrive on a lot of difficult sets and action. It's definately a thinker's western. Here you have a fighter who doesn't want to fight, a town with a secret and promise that they'll have a hard time to keep from breaking to save itself. Very suspenseful and very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ford's Best Western
Glenn Ford was one of our alltime great Western movie actors. In his heyday, he was great at combining fragile humanity with raw strength and brute force.

Haven't we all wished that we could go back and make it all better?H.D., a not so great bull rider is hurting, physically and emotionally. He goes home to heal his busted ribs and learns that his sister has put his father (H.D.'s hero) in a home for old folks.H.D. can't abide it.He needs money to save the family homestead and all he knows is bull riding. The icing on the cake is that his beautiful highschool sweetheart is now a widow. The rodeo is coming to a town not too far from home. Can H.D. draw and ride the bull that's never been rode? Does he have one good 8 second ride left in him?Can he stoprodeoing from town to town? The top prize is $100,000!Enough to save the homestead and start a new life!

If you like a well-done Western, you'll enjoy this one.It has everything - train robberies, shoot outs, Outlaws, Indians, bad guys, heroes, strong women and strong men, romance and a touch of humor. It's too bad Burt Reynolds didn't choose more movies roles like this.He plays the part very well and Sara Miles is enchanting as the strong-willed Catherine. And what Western would be complete without Lee J. Cobb and Jack Warden?Look for an amazingly well done performance by (of all people) George Hamilton.

I saw this movie many moons ago.I consider it to be the greatest film since The Ten Commandments.I've wanted a copy for years.John Astin is brilliant in this fine true-life story of a lad in the old west who was raised by wild animals after his wagon train was ambushed. 4-0 out of 5 stars I Liked It...Just Not as Much as Everyone Else Does.
"The Searchers" is considered by many to be a masterpiece of both the Western genre and of movies in general. It's even on The American Film Institute's Top 100 (#96). I liked the film; It's got a lot of good things about it, but one thing I look for in a film to really call it "Great" is entertainment. The movie is entertaining, but a movie on that same list that's a few notches below it ('Unforgiven') was a much better movie; Both as a film and as entertainment. Anyway, I've seen over a thousand movies and have somehow never seen a John Wayne film. Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who shacks up with his brother and his family. After they're all killed and his two nieces are kidnapped, Ethan sets out on an obsessive quest to get them back. One of the nieces is found dead soon after and the rest of the film is about them trying to find the living one Debbie (Natalie Wood). Along with him is Martin Pauley (Jeffrey Hunter), a man Ethan doesn't really like. Ethan hates indians and Martin is 1/8 Comanche. Early in the film, you find out that Ethan actualyl saved Martin when his family was killed by indians and gave him to his brother and his brother's wife. Even though he seems disagreeable, it sounds like Ethan's quest in honorable enough. But, you'd be wrong. He's not out to save Debbie, but to kill her. When people are kidnapped by the indians, they pretty much become one...And Ethan can't have that. The movie takes place over a long time span and there were times that, I thought, the movie seemed longer than it was. The film has beautiful cinematography though, especially when you consider that the film was released in 1956. John Wayne's performance is very good and, you find later, multilayered. Having read about the film a little bit, I found that it inspired movies like Taxi Driver and even the Buddy Holly song
5-0 out of 5 stars A great reproduction of a great movie with a great set of Extras
I need to preface this review with the comment that I am not a John Wayne fan. However "The Searchers" is often said to be the Duke's best movie. And it is clear from here that he was no cardboard cut out actor and, if anything, his real talents were underused in his career. Still "The Searchers" is a classic and deserves to be better known.
5-0 out of 5 stars On the Edge of Perfection
Okay, let's get it said and out of the way: "The Searchers" is one of the greatest films ever made. There, it's done. We can move on now. It can be hard to view, and harder still to write about, a film with such reputation for greatness and such a deep background of commentary as John Ford's 1956 classic. The film holds great cultural weight and a completely objective approach to the film is, for most, impossible. It is the most quintessential film of the most quintessential American genre, and its themes and characters take on infinite meaning towards the country and people they represent. It is perhaps the richest western ever produced in both scale and content. And yet "The Searchers" is really two films in one, and while many like to conveniently ignore its failures, they still fall from the screen cold and lifeless whenever viewed. The film is great because of its challenge to the commonly held notions of history, both cinematic and actual, that have produced it, and yet it still gets caught up in the pitfalls it at other moments so brilliantly rejects. For as much as we would like it to not be, "The Searchers" is still a studio film of Old Hollywood, and a western to boot, and despite it undisputable greatness, at times in the film this is painfully evident.

3-0 out of 5 stars Longing for DVD
This movie has to rank as one of the funniest under-rated movies in the whole spoof western genre. The incident with the witch doctor, the duel with the chief's son, the flaming arrows, no, I'm not going to tell you what happened. The nude swim in the water hole, and how that girl can fill a wet blanket, (brings a whole new meaning to the phrase}.
5-0 out of 5 stars a very funny send-up of the west dino style
with joey bishos an "indian" (you must see and hear to believe) dean martin rides threw this comedy wiyh his own style. just a great family movie that everyone will love.i hope it comes to dvd like every other movie ever made seems to be doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars To the rear - Har!
I've searched high and low to find this classic western comedy. It is one of my favorite Dean Martin vehicles. I felt that all the actors and actresses played their parts to perfection. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted romp through the west. ... Read more
