5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Follows His Star
This is one of the finest 60's westerns dealing with man's struggle for independence, overshadowed by "Hud," though far more entertaining a film. An incredible lineup, a cast of stars and future stars if you watch closely:Bill Bixby(helo pilot), Walter Matthau, George Kennedy, Gena Rowlands and Bill Rausch. A year later you would know Rausch as the one-armed man Dr. Richard Kimble chased for 4 seasons on "The Fugitive." Adapted from,"Brave Cowboy," a simple story about a drifter-cowboy who didn't like fences, this is more fleshed out, with Kirk Douglas trying totalk sense into his friend, by breaking in jail with him, a plausible sub-plot to explain his visit. Douglas has some touching scenes with Gena Rowlands where, at times, he struggles with his conscience and allegiance to his friend. Nevertheless, Douglas escapes and the entire locals pursue. Douglas and his valiant horse outwit all armed forces aganst him as he ascends the mountains to freedom, leading to a terrifying, heart-wrenching climax on a rain-swept highway. The on-lccation scenes are sparingly shot, symbolically at times, never slowing the suspense. There are poetic moments and moments of stark violence, handled with deft assurance. One of those black and white movies that explores the grays as well, you sit in your seat it a daze. Then in a few moments you realize you were experiencing screen "realism." You just want to jump into the screen and run off with Douglas. A rarity. The classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story and a great film
One of Kirk Douglas' best roles, and a moving film in all respects, well-acted by the superb cast. Contrasts the remnants of the "old west" personified by Douglas, with the "new" west of social activism, progress and consumer products, property--and most symbolically, highways that cut up and limit the open range. When the Old resists the New, the New must deal with the Old on its own terms: humor and respect, but ultimately tragedy, are the results. This movie deserves to be released on DVD as soon as possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Underappreciated Minor Classic
This semi-forgotten 1962 film is a small, lost treasure featuring Kirk Douglas as a cowboy who can't quite come to terms with the modern world. The excellent cast includes Gena Rowlands as the wife of Douglas' best friend, a woman who has little use for the old-world notions of either man; Walter Matthau in an underrated portrayal of a sheriff torn between his admiration for Douglas and his duty to track him down; and Carroll O'Connor in his pre-Archie Bunker days as a truck driver whose path unexpectedly crosses with that of the fugitive cowboy. The film has some quaint morals and notions, and George Kennedy is a bit one-dimensional as a thuggish cop, but these are quibbles. Overall, it's a tightly told and well acted story that neatly crossed genres, featured one of Douglas' most charismatic leading performances, and tackled the theme of old Western individualism vs. the System a good seven years before "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" plowed similar ground. Keep an eye out for it on DVD, because its beautiful black-and-white vistas deserve a new digital rendering. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Renaissance Alpha Man
This movie remains my all time favorite western classic. I work with teen boys, teaching and training them in the traits and habits needed th be successful men.I use this film to help drive home my message. Clint Walker, as Big Jim Cole, epitimizes the essence of manhood. He exhibits honor, courage, compassion, integrity, strength, fidelity, respect, self reliance, love and mercy. As a family man he is the spiritual leader of his household. His wife, Angie, respects and adores him. He is unabashed in his love for her. His children love and look up to him. As a man he has the strength of character and courage to face an assortment of deadly challenges bent on destroyng him and his family. He engages his enemies with determined resolve, steady nerves and manly strength.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Classic
I grew up watching this movie with my dad.On Friday nights he would ask what movie I wanted to watch and I would always say "The Night of the Grizzly".There are a few scary scenes with the Grizzly but nothing to graphic. It's a story of a hardworking family getting through the rough times.A great movie for the entire family to enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A family tames the West
This atypical "family Western" tells a story that was probably more common on the frontier than every cinematic shootout ever filmed.Former lawman Big Jim Cole (Clint Walker, best known as TV's "Cheyenne") inherits his grandfather's small ranch and brings his family to settle on it.His first 24 hours in town aren't promising: he learns that the ranch was originally won from a powerful neighbor, Jed Curry (Keenan Wynn), who still covets it for his sons, Tad and Cal (Ron Ely, Sammy Jackson); he has to use almost all his savings to pay off a loan against it; 12-year-old son Charlie (Kevin Brodie) gets into a brawl with some local boys; five-year-old daughter Gypsy (Victoria Paige Meyerink) gets "skunked"; longtime deputy and friend Sam Potts (Don Haggerty) gets cheated out of $10 by the young Currys and their buddy Duke Squires (Med Flory); and the ranch turns out to be a near-ruin.But Jim is determined: this is good land, he says; with their purebred bull Duncan, he and his wife Angie (Martha Hyer) will raise "some good cattle and maybe ten or twelve more kids."Then comes full spring and the awakening of the neighborhood nemesis, a huge grizzly bear known as Old Satan ("If that beast ain't Lucifer himself he's sure his first cousin," says banker Cotton Benson (Regis Toomey), an early friend of the Coles).Satan's first visit to the Cole ranch results in a dead bull, the panicked flight of Sam's beloved mule Becky, and the injury of the family dog Solomon.Jim and Sam go hunting and manage to hurt and intimidate the animal, but as fall arrives he returns and wreaks even more havoc, not only against them but at other places in the valley. Now the cattlemen put a bounty on the bear, which draws hunter Cass Dowdy (Leo Gordon), formerly a deputy of Jim's, who bears him an old grudge and yearns to see him "busted, flat broke, and beat."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars gary cole shines as custer in t.v. 's version of "dances with wolves"
gary cole as custer, rodney a grant as crazy horse, and roseanna arquette as libby custer make this t.v.mini series shine and one of the best tellings of the life of custer ever put on film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, but how much longer for the DVD?
Despite being a made for TV flick, this is my fav Little Big Horn movie.I don't know why it takes what feels like forever to reprint VHS versions to DVD whith all the high-tech out there, but like Zulu Dawn, another of my favorite war flicks, it seems that the conversion of celluloid to digital is as slow as molasses in January (that's January in Norther Virginia, and baby, it get's cold here!).I found the acting of all the characters excellent, the storyline, wonderful, the action super, and the perspective from both sides, the red man and the white man, excellent, and the atmosphere convincing, although there is not much grit to the era in the movie.Just stop farting around and get me a DVD version and make me a very happy fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars "son of the morning star" is a true epic
this is t.v.'s take at the boxoffic and oscar power of "dances with wolves" and it is really the best thing t.v. has done next to "lonesome dove". gary cole is just perfect as the bold, ego manic, loving husband, and a commanding officer no one would want. rodney grant of "dances with wolves" is also great as crazy horse and the battle is the center piece of this fine look at the little big horn from both sides and really brings home the sadness of what followed for both sides. this belongs on dvd, i hope it is soon. but if a tape is what it takes to see this movie then buy it you will love it ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "jaws" on the western plains
this is another of charles bronson's 70's westerns that tried to do something different, and it works if you let it. blasted by everyone when it came out it really is a good take on "jaws" and "moby dick" in the west. bronson is wild bill hickock, slowly being eatten away by the clap, and having visions of the white buffalo of the title and it's coming for him so he starts looking for it. will sampson is crazy horse who must kill the beast to help his daughter(killed by the anamial)to get to heaven. this has some great scenery and some fine action scenes,so if you like bronson or westerns that have a little food for thought check this one out.

    This movie KNOCKED ME OUT!
4-0 out of 5 stars Erratic Sound Problem
This is a wonderful movie which is why I replaced my VCR tape copied from TV by buying it as a DVD.Unfortunately, the sound is a major problem. Every time the scenes changed from dialogue to music or action such as thundering horses, calamitous weather, etc. the volume rose to a shreiking crescendo. It required constant volume adjustment to be able to watch the film comfortably.I don't recall this being such a glaring problem on the VCR copy. Perhaps sound is now mixed for the younger people who suffer hearing loss from the music (I use that term loosely) of their times, but if so, I don't see how they can make out the dialogue. This problem is not limited to just this DVD of course, but it spoiled an otherwise beautiful film.

I bought this movie, because a family member had seen it years ago and liked it.I watched it once and it was very funny there were several sexual referances in the movie coming from Ann-Margret but you can tell that by the cover.Funny as is was, at timesyou felt like you were watching the same things over and over again.I wouldn't watch it with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Villain 1979
Hes dressed in black from boots to hat and and hes twirling double iron . His name is "Cactus Jack" slater and hes THE VILLAIN . Kirk Douglas (1916- ) stars as the neer-do-well highwayman in this screwball gunslinger comedy co-starring Arnold Schwartznegger (1947 - )as handsome stranger andswedish actress Ann-Margret (Ann-Margret Olsson 1941 - ) as a lusty Miss Charming Jones . Ride along with a horse named Whisky and an allstar cast featuring Paul Lynde (1926-1982) as THE VILLAIN plots to outsmart handsome with slapstick determination . A raucous western spoof that proves you cant judge a cowboy by the color of his hat . High Quality Transfer . Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars You would enjoy this movie if. . .
If you like good clean humor, you will love this movie. It is so funny and also entertaining. It's about a cowboy and his horse, and the horse almost talks. It's also about a seven shot, six-shooter (can you believe it). It comes in handy at just the right time. It's also about a naive cowboy, who does dumb things and doesn't even know they're dumb. So, for an entertaining time, purchase this dvd. It's well worth the money, and the time spent watching it. I'm sure you'll love it as much as we did. Happpy watching!!!!!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Book was terrific, movie a disappointment
Perhaps I should not have read the book first. The book was terrific: colorful characters, beautiful descriptive passages of the Utah country (as only Zane Grey can write), great story lines.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Western series
The actors are superb and are working with what I consider one of the most romantic and exciting western stories ever published (one of my favorites).
3-0 out of 5 stars Almost a great Film
Zane Grey had the unique ability to paint pictures through words of a world he experienced first hand in a time before television.Riders of the Purple Sage missed a great opportunity to literally show the Purple Sage and create a pictorial reference to time and place. The casting of Harris and Madigan was acceptable as they appeared to be instrumental in bringing the project to the screen. However, Grey's writing is not at all comfortable on television, it is big screen, big, big screen and the environment that Grey so lovingly described all but vanished in the clunky directing and the overuse of dissolves in the editing process. David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia is a Film I would have suggested they try to emulate. Grey created balances of character and place and this film badly missed. The casting of the young couple was SOOO Hollywood. I can almost see the casting session "but we need to attract a younger audience, let's not get too real with this and alienate the viewer and the Mormons" Yawn! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Miles Utley (Tom Berenger) is a guerrilla for God, a gun-wielding member of the Danites, the militia wing of the Mormons during the late 19th century. Once the defensive arm of the besieged church, the Danites (dubbed "the Avenging Angels") are now feared by the Utah congregation and Utley is too good at his job: he's become, one accuser says, "A man who murders in the name of peace." After stopping an assassination attempt on the life of Brigham Young (a quietly authoritative Charlton Heston, whose star presence makes the most of a handful scenes), Utley is quickly hidden away and the details hushed up, but as he pulls at a few loose threads he unravels a conspiracy that shoots to the very top of the church. The twisting plot makes for an engrossing mystery and the locations are never less than gorgeous, but the real hook is that this conspiracy film is inspired by a real but little-known bit of Mormon history. Berenger is a natural as a buckskinned, quick-draw Mormon soldier, holding his own in scenes with grinning Western icon James Coburn as Utley's easygoing but ruthlessly dedicated mentor. As the mystery winds up, the more interesting dimension of Utley's crisis in faith is transformed into showdown heroics, which makes for a rousing old-fashioned conclusion if a disappointing character study. 5-0 out of 5 stars a slam-bang adventure about a little know part of western history
tom berenger brings great strenth to this role and this film about a little known sect of the morman faith, the danites,or avenging angels,as they were called. these men were recruited and trained as bodyguards for brigham young and as protecters of the mormans against the pursecuters of their faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars MARVELOUS WESTERN "FICTION"
A movie trailer for THE AVENGING ANGEL claims that what the viewer will see is the "true" story of the Avenging Angel, in this case played by Tom Berenger. Let's face it folks, if this is a "true" story from the American West based on historical facts then we need to all go searching for the grave sites of Shane, Conagher and J.B. Books!

Avenging Angel is based on a book written by Gary L. Stewart about the life of his Great-Grandfather Gabriel Marion Utley. The movie is both fact and fiction. But well worth watching. The movie's discription of Miles' life and the real life of Gabriel's life are very similar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So where's the DVD?
This great comedy is about two modern-day hard-luck cowboys who are always getting into a bind, and when they do, their boss is always there to bail them out of their trouble ... and into his debt (hence the name "Rounders"). As a result, they always owe him money, and to pay him back, they have to do the jobs no one else will. Paticularly funny are the scenes with the two air-head women they encounter toward the end. A great movie!

It makes you wonder where you would fit in, in this cinematic worldly epic. Most movie Westerns pale in comparison, especially the pop pseudo western bravado ones. A scout in the old Southwest (Gregory Peck) undertakes to protect a white woman (Eva Marie Saint) and her half-breed son from the Apache warrior--the woman's captor-husband of 10 years--who wants them back. The scout is a man of estimable courage and resources (again, Gregory Peck), but the mostly unseen Apache is a veritable monster of determination, cunning, and bloodthirstiness: Peck and his two charges doom entire communities to extermination just by passing through the neighborhood. This fierce amalgam of Western and horror movie was the last of seven collaborations between director Robert Mulligan and producer Alan J. Pakula, of which Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Real Apache With Feedback
I was born and raised on the Apache Reservation. The child in the movie was from Whiteriver, AZ, my grandfather's hometown.I have seen the movie. It does have some historical accuracy in the sense that the real Apache language was used and that "mixed-blood" families are very common among Native Americans. As a matter of fact, "mixed-blood" Indians outnumber "full-blooded" Indians by far.The Cherokees are a perfect example (who include Burt Reynolds as a member) along with the Lumbees (who include Heather Locklear).
5-0 out of 5 stars Even fools found it entertaining
All the comments on here by people concerning how "you don't see the Indian until the end" are indicative of the ignorance of most Americans when it comes to the early frontier history of their own country.
5-0 out of 5 stars The stalking moon
Amazing movie with great story and action.

5-0 out of 5 stars JONES BRINGS THIS KELTON WESTERN TO LIFE
Tommy Lee Jones brings the Elmer Kelton western classic to life with THE GOOD OLD BOYS. Like Monte Walsh, the story follows a tried and true cowboy's nostalgic efforts to hold on to the only life he knows. Even being roped down in order to help his brother keep his homestead and an appealing lady friend aren't enough to make Huey Calloway (Jones) settle down.

The screenplay as written by Mr. Jones must have been easy since it follows the book so closely. My wife and I just watched the VHS a moment ago and really enjoyed it, especially that it was so true to the book.I also wish that Mr. Kelton had been given more credit than he was but that didn't change our enjoyment of the film.Hope more of Kelton's books will be filmed! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it
I've watched this classic whenever I could find it on TV. I enjoyed the chemistry between Taylor and Darcel. And, ofcourse, the women...As the charactors go through the trials of the trip, you Know that you too, would've said "Not me!"

5-0 out of 5 stars another oldie but goodie
Here is another oldie but goodie from the early '50's. Good story, acting and great B/W photography. One could go on at length about the fine points of this film, but the main thing is, just get it!! This is a definite "classic" and deserves a place in any movie library! Robert Taylor is at the top of his form as usual, providing enough conflict to keep one interested. Hope Emerson and the Asian boy, "Ito," provide a balance of humor that gives one a light-hearted break. I just wish it was on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty
I know, maybe we are used to seeing "Robert Taylor" in a certian setting when it come to movies, but this one has a good story behind it and a good cast of women coming out of the norm to reach cross country to their awaited future husbnads and home, but it's what goes on on the way to their destination that makes it real good.

"I've never seen a woman who was more like a man," a character observes of Vienna (Joan Crawford), who has just opened a saloon that hasn't exactly endeared itself to the local townspeople. Emma (Mercedes McCambridge), the local sexually repressed, lynch-happy harpy, is particularly displeased. Vienna is wooed both by the Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and by Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), a peripatetic tough guy-turned-troubadour with whom she has a past.Read more

Very well put together spoof of westerns put togetheras a musical.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sex, dominant women and death, 50's style!
Emotions run high in a small western town where the civilizing influence of the railroad has not quite arrived.Untamed outlaws rob the stagecoach and the local bank, and frontier justice in the form of lynching is still a matter of course.

Delmer Daves's movie about ex–army scout Tom Jeffords's one-man peace mission to the Apaches, and the diplomatic partnership he formed with Cochise, has a child's-storybook clarity to it. That applies to not only its lovely Technicolor compositions but also its scenario, characterizations, and still-arresting mix of violence and delicacy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie with a Message for Today
Wonderful stars - James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and a very beautiful Debra Paget - in one of the very best westerns that have ever been made with a true regard and understanding of the plite of the native American Indians. Not the first, in fact far from it, Tim McCoy's 1932's "End of the Trail" made a very bold attempt to depict the native American as being very human and very much wronged by the white man. That aside, this movie has a great deal more to recommend it; the superb techicolor, the sensitive direction (Delmer Daves)with the perfect mix of drama, action and suspence. Highly recommended to all serious collectors of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encounter between two worlds.
I've seen Broken Arrow when I was just a kid. The power of the images of this film remained in the back of my mind. In the near past a collection of the best Far West movies was edited in Argentina. This was the first title I run to buy. I wasn't disappointed with what I found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Classic
All I will say is "I LOVE THIS MOVIE"!!I am so glad to have found it online!I haven't seen it since it first came out and I was a kid.I have always wanted to find it on video to buy!It is just a western romance about a cowboy's heart ache and his search for his runaway wife. But I won't tell you much more (like other reviews).I don't want to ruin it for you.Other people are making this mistake of telling the ending, such as who kills who and when and so forth.HELLO!!Don't ruin the ending!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Other Devine Miss M?
What can I say- this movie's more fun than you might think...despite the dreadful performance by Morgan Fairchild (far from devine)!! Where are the Petticoat Junction girls when you need them?As always- Willie's cool and collected and he manages to keep a straight face whenever Ms. Fairchild dribbles her lines! Why the producers failed to cast Katharine Ross or, perhaps, the sexiest woman in the film- "Cindy" (Baytowns Miss Marinell Madden... who eventually offs Mr. Nelson while wearing a wonderfully campy wig!) is beyond me, but I always enjoy this movie whenever I catch it, and will long for a DVD of out takes whenever somebody sees fit! Just checking for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The music by itself makes it 5 stars
If the purpose of this movie was to showcase Willie and his band to movie audiences rather than shoot for an Oscar, then it works, because the music is outstanding. I was blown away that beautiful Dyan Cannon has a great singing voice. Amy Irving is also enjoyable to watch and listen to. But obviously Willie himself is the star of the show, and his singing is unbeatable. I find myself clapping at the end of "Angel Flying Too Close" while watching this video-- hey, it's that good!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite Classic!
I saw it when I was a young fan, and now I'm an old fan, and I still love it! Classic country, classic Willie Nelson(when he actually sang the whole song, not syncopated short cuts!), classic somebody-done-somebody-wrong-song.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dyan Cannonshines in wonderful backstage musical-romance
1980's "Honeysuckle Rose" is best known as the first film to star Willie Nelson, but its true shining star is Dyan Cannon, in a wonderful, atypically understated performance as Willie's loyal wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Did you know Big Joe Abernathy"?
The song by Mama Cass at the beginning of this show is the story of Monte's life;"I'm not about to come unhinged when everything goes wrong".This movie depicts the rough edged life that cowboys endured.Monte's time is running out though. He is going to have to find a new occupation.Near the end of the show Monte sees a horse in town that "Shorty" couldn't break. He mounts it and breaks it but nearly destroys the town doing it.A man who gives wild west shows sees him and is impressed with his riding. He offers Monte to join his show, but he'll have to be "Texas Jack".The money is good but Monte can't do it."I'm not gonna spit on my whole life", he says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monte Walsh--Lee Marvin
My absolute favorite western. It captures life on ranches after the winter of 1886-87.This needs to be out on widescreen DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lee Marvin's best movie role who deserved an OSCAR.
The previous reviews couldn't have said it better. I will add that this movie has the best bronco bustin' ride ever in the movies. I saw the Tom Selleck version. Not good enough. It's like trying to remake Gone With The Wind. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Duvall does it again !
If you're into westerns, you can't pass on this one!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Rediscovering the western . . .
Director and actor, Kevin Costner, does not depart far from the traditional elements of the classic western. With Robert Duvall as the other central character, the two of them driving cattle, he visits again the bond between men that grows as they work together and face common enemies, whether bad weather or bad men. The open, unspoiled landscape of basin and range is represented here by breathtaking location footage near Calgary, Alberta. And there is the frontier town, where good people are threatened and intimidated by the presence of a powerful ranch owner and those in his pay, including the town marshal. Finally, there is the choice between moving on and settling down, as the town doctor's beautiful, intelligent sister becomes marriage material for one of the two cowboys.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable experience
Robert Duval sets the pace here as a trail boss with carefully chosen words and authentic grit. Costner is excellent as a younger working cowboy fleeing his wartime past. Everything seems as you imagine it would have been in the post-Civil War American West, including mud everywhere, harsh weather, and danger in all directions. Every character in this film rings true and the ending is both believable and satisfying. The photography is superb and features generous shots of natural beauty. All in all, a great movie watching experience. Sure to become a classic. ... Read more
