Editorial Review

Pam Grier is Friday Foster, a photographer's assistant at a glamourmagazine assigned to cover the secret arrival of a reclusive black millionaire(Thalmus Rasula). "Just get your cute little behind out there and take yourlittle pictures and goddammit don't get involved!" Of course she does: The sceneerupts into an attempted assassination, and Friday digs up a conspiracy thatreaches to Washington, D.C., and involves sassy, flamboyant fashion designerEartha Kitt, lascivious but good-at-heart minister Scatman Crothers, and apowerful black congressman. Yaphet Kotto costars as a good-natured P.I. she tagsalong as a sidekick and bodyguard, and Carl Weathers makes a strong impressionas a silent but deadly hit man systematically silencing potential witnesses. Thescript feels more like a comic book than a movie (it was inspired by a newspapercomic strip), with Grier playing Friday as a plucky, resourceful amateur, stealing cars and stalking killers armed with nothing but a fully loaded camera. She's better as the street-smart pistol-packin' mamas of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a Whole Lotta Woman!!!
Pam Grier is smokin hot in this blaxploitation classic...and enough "Jive" dialect to keep you laughing for days!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Pam Grier Vehicle
Pam Grier is fine as the spunky photo-journalist title character and Yaphet Kotto is amusing as her P.I. sidekick helping her ferret out the "black widow" conspiracy.Their efforts are essentially for naught in this sluggishly directed actioner that has the substance of your average Spelling-Goldberg production.Lots of prominent African-American talent on hand(Eartha Kitt, Godfrey Cambridge, Scatman Crothers, etc.) but their impact is marginal. What this film needed was Sid Haig!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, Whatcha Doin' Girl?
Friday Foster may not be Foxy Brown, but it's well worth your time if you're into this genre. It does have a catchy little theme song!It doesn't have alot of the action and violence of other Grier films, it's more about unravelling a conspiracy.Jim Backus is given high billing, but only appears in one scene.Carl Weathers is at the bottom of the billing, but appears in most of the film-But that's a good thing, coz who doesn't like Carl Weathers?Yaphet Koto, as usual, is a joy, and actually gets a few laughs. For those like myself who occasionally fantasize coming home from work to find a naked Pam Grier in the kitchen making goulash, will enjoy the two topless scenes.Foster sure has no problem jumping into the sack with people in this one.Basically all I can say about Friday Foster is that it's a sure bet if you dig Pam Grier and/or blaxploitation movies.I know I dig. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive sequel to the classic blaxploitation original
In my opinion, Scream, Blacula, Scream is every bit as good as Blacula.Rather than offering a pedestrian rehash of the whole vampirism story of the original, the sequel throws another powerful force, that of voodoo, into the mix and gives the film a whole new direction.William Marshall is just as good as before in the title role, and he meets up with a worthy possible antagonist in Pam Grier, who plays the gifted voodoo priestess he seeks out for help.Blacula, resurrected in his undead state with no further possibility of reclaiming the modern incarnation of his beloved bride, now seeks to break the curse that has made him a bloodthirsty, yet exceedingly cool, pariah on society. That doesn't mean he's not going to keep killing people and turning them into vampires in the meantime, however, so expect more jugular action as this film winds its way to a conclusion.
1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
they should have stopped at the original BLACULA -1972 he was perfectly destroyed at the end but noooo they decide to bring him back and the story was not as fresh as the first one another thing in Blacula his Cape had silverish white linening but in this one it is Red Just like Dracula get this if only you are just wanting two have both of them that is what i did otherwise dont waste your money

4-0 out of 5 stars More Bytes from the Dark Prince of Darkness!
In 1973's SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM!--an excellent sequel to BLACULA (1972), the first horror entry in AIP's "blaxploitation" line--William Marshall reprises his role as the aristocratic black vampire Mamuwalde (a.k.a. Blacula).Though he was killed by sunlight at the end of the first film, the vampire brother is resurrected when his bones are used as part of an evil voodoo rite.Realizing the preternatural potential of voodoo magic, the revivified Mamuwalde enlists the aid of a beautiful and powerful voodoo priestess (Pam Grier) in hopes of being forever freed from the curse of vampirism.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't feeling this one baby.
If I had to describe `Sheba Baby,' the best I can come up with is Pam Grier Light with some really bad mellow drama. I really tried, but this movie just didn't work for me. The action scenes were dull, the acting was surprisingly poor, and some of these characters were TOO stereotypical to even be funny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pam Grier, Forever!
This is the first of Pam Grier's efforts that I would not lump wholly in the exploitation category.Sure, there's lots of gunplay and a redundant catfight. That said, the dialogue here avoids the tongue-and-cheek quality that was evident in "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown" and the villains here are more realistic and not as cartoonish. The underlying theme here are the underworld elements that threaten legitimate black entrepreneurs.Because the film deals with the threat more seriously the message becomes more potent.Even in this low-budget effort Grier just commands the screen like any of her contemporaries and would give a run for the money for today's top actresses. She was definitely ahead of her time.I can't recall if Halle Berry thanked her in her Oscar speech. She does not appear nude here but she looks so fabulous clothed that your imagination will do somersaults.Timeless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it just to see Pam in a wetsuit
This may not be Pam Grier's best film, but I give it high marks, because there's a long stretch towards the end of the film where we see her in a sexy blue beavertail wetsuit. She keeps the jacket unzipped about half way through most of it, so you can get a good, alluring view of her chest. Sure, she has a swimsuit on under the wetsuit, but I find that more interesting anyway. Lets one use one's imagination, I say. You can't ask for more than a beautiful woman in a beavertail wetsuit (and if you ARE asking for things like character development, fine acting, etc you're really looking in the wrong place). ... This middling but entirely watchable blaxploitation thriller from 1975 stars football-legend-turned-actor Fred Williamson as the brother of a murdered bar owner in a racially divided town. After bringing in a gaggle of tough street buddies from the old neighborhood to help break up a corrupt police force, Williamson's character figures he can settle into domestic bliss with Pam Grier. But there's a snag: the hero's restless posse decides to take over the white cops' graft operation, forcing a bloody finale of retribution. In the '70s genre of reactionary revenge movies, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars And I was there....
What can I say, I'm bias, why... not because this was another of those "black" films everyone thought should be made but because I actually had a small bit part in it.Yep, stood out there in the cold of Platte City (MO), with about 16 other extras. Saw the open call for extras on the bulletin board at school and answered the call. Hey, no money, no true fame, but at least my segment didn't get tossed to the cutting room floor and it was fun "being in a movie"

3-0 out of 5 stars Williamson Takes Over the Town, and the Film, Too
As a soul cinema fan, it is hard for me to criticize this film, which unites two Afro-American icons, Pam Grier and Fred Williamson.Still, I must confess my disappointed feelings after watching "Bucktown," a rather mediocre film, considering those two fantastic leads.4-0 out of 5 stars cool film
this film worked really well. Both The "Hammer"&Pam Grier get down to Business here.it's so sad at how they didn't get there Props back in the day because films like this Showcase how tight they were on screen&they always had alot of Great Action in the films.Pam Grier still Blows My Mind She is SuperBaddd!! ... Editorial Review

Based on Chester Himes'snovel, this film marked actor-writer Ossie Davis's directing debut. Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques play Himes's volatile police detectives, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who are on the trail of white men who pulled an armed stickup at a Back to Africa rally in Harlem. The money belongs to the poor people who paid for a chance to return to the motherland--but was it really a stickup? Or is the flashy preacher at the center of the Back to Africa movement (Calvin Lockhart) involved in a scam to rip off his own people? The plot drags; the best part of the film are the performances (as well as spotting cameos by such actors as the then-unknown Cleavon Little) and the on-location shooting in parts of New York where a camera had rarely ventured previously. Redd Foxx shows up in a small part as a ragpicker that led to his role in TV's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It Got Soul!
Cotton Comes To Harlem is a movie produced in the time of Black Exploitation films.Fortunately, this movie doesn't fit the mode. It got a lot of soul and laughter.A very good cast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor at its finest
This is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life.Only Richard Pryor ever made me laugh harder.Rex Reed, the movie critic whose tongue was sharper than a sword, said that you needed to sit through two showing in a theatre so you could hear the lines you missed because people were laughing so hard.He was right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electrifying Inner-City Comic Thriller
Director Ossie Davis delivers not only a taut police thriller but a film that inserts the concerns of the civil rights movement circa 1970 in a fascinating way.Filmed on actual locations the film just exudes authenticity and atmosphere. For a film that keeps it real I found it interestingthat the film's score was composed by Galt McDermott of "Hair" fame(?!).Another minor quibble is that the violence in the film was at times over-the-top.Godfrey Cambridge as Gravedigger Jones and Raymond St. Jacques as Coffin Ed Johnson make an engaging pair. They assume their duty as New York police detectives is to protect their people from predators whether they be black or white even if at times they are at odds with their white captain.Calvin Lockhart is deliciously smarmy as Reverend Deke O'Malley who bilks his congregants out of cash for a bogus back to Africa scheme.Judy Pace is seductively evil as Iris, O'Malley's main squeeze.Redd Foxx is underutilized here as a junk dealer but his character does prove integral to the film's plot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cornbread Earl and Me
Way back then, when I was a child growing up in Guyana, South America, I saw this movie on big screen. It touched an entire audience that night and I am happy to have seen it on Amazon.com. I am now lucky to be able to buy it because I have often thought about this movie, about the nice kid whom everyone called Cornbread. I remember both him and his basketball which was replaced that fatal day with a bottle of soda pop when he was shot. I can never forget this story, because it is indelibly encraved into my mind and I turned out pretty good, now living here in America. These movies are the real classics of all times, only...no one every says so! I rate this movie a classic and I am sorry Amazon.com. I love you but you don't have a buttom to rate a true classic of our time!

5-0 out of 5 stars "One of the Best movies out there
One of the most shining examples out there of the blackploitation era is this film; You have a dilemma, and you have a solution. A young brother just about to go to college on a basketball scholarship was killed by the cops thinking that he was a suspect; All the witnesses of the crime get intimidatedwith the exception of one young brother playedcourageously by Laurence Fishburne, who tells the story just like it is even after he and his mother were intimidated by the prosecution. Most of the witnesses were intimidated and deniedwhat actually happened. But Fishburne's character unbought and unbossed told Cornbread's story simply and saved the day;If you ever want to see a film and come across a situation that needs clarifying, THIS is the film to see;

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank youPam for aBlaxploitation classic!
Maxim magazine lists Coffy as number 7 on its list of the 50 best B-movies of all time, and there can clearly be no mistake about its status as a B-movie. Pam Grier shines in this hilarious action-packed blaxploitation flick where she first got her name as a 'black pin-up queen' during the early 70's. It is apparent after watching this film that no one remembers this for the bad-acting and dialogue, but for Pam Grier herself she is one mean sister.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie...
This is probably my all-time favorite film, and I think it's because everything seems to work right: the atmosphere, the music(especially the title song "Coffy" with the classic refrain "Coffy is the color/Of her skin"), the gags, the actors, Pam Grier, everything. I especially like director Hill's choice to film some of the sleeziest parts of Los Angeles in order to tell the story; we see Watts, downtown, Malibu.
5-0 out of 5 stars PAM GRIER IS FABULOUS!!!! A GODDESS!!!!
This, together with "Foxy Brown", are my two favorite Pam Grier films. Pam Grier kicked butt on both films. Not only she is a great actress, she was and still today IS a total sex goddess!!!!"Coffy" always gets me in the end. After all these men used her, and abused her, after she gets her revenge, kills them all, and at the final scene, the picture of Pam walking alone at the beach, and the song, always gets me. There are times in our lives that in one way or another, we go thru that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foxy Brown Rocks!
This is a great 70's movie! Pam Grier looks beautiful and plays this tough girl part perfect. I love the music and Intro to this film along with the cool clothes! This is a fun movie to watch lots of laughs. I loved it when Foxy pulled the gun out of her Afro, she is too cool! She is like Charlies Angels and Police Woman, Girl Power!

4-0 out of 5 stars Grier is outstanding in this crime thriller
"That's my sister, baby--and she's a whole lotta woman!" That's how one character sums up the title character in "Foxy Brown," a crime thriller written and directed by Jack Hill. Pam Grier plays the title character, whom the title song promises is "super bad."2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a Great Film, But Enjoyable and Action-Packed
With better direction and acting, I think *Foxy Brown* could have been an awesome film. As it stands, it's pretty much just a decent plot filled with distractions caused by a parade of terrible acting and outrageous '70s fashion (the latter of which, however, is really almost reason enough to see the film).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars [3.5]--"Let's get down to some serious B&tt-kicking business."
I don't understand anyone who says that this is one of the worst exploitation films they have ever seen. Just the title alone gives this cult status and all the ingredients are here for it being an extremely fun film to watch. Yeah I'll admit that women's Prison flicks are terrible. They are all about getting girls naked. BAD action sequences & Horrible acting always plague these movies. They're usually made for teenagers who watch late night SKINemax. Black Mama White Mama on the other hand is fun. It doesn't take it self seriously. It even has drama that is topped off with a dramatic ending.

William Marshall, a Shakespearean actor with a rich baritone voice, enriches this otherwise bland blaxploitation vampire film with his strong, seductive performance. He's Manuwalde, a European-educated 18th-centuryAfrican prince who appeals to the Count Dracula for help in ending theslave trade. Dracula, never known as a great emancipator, puts the bite onManuwalde's troubles, dubs him "Blacula" (the only time the name is utteredin the film), and imprisons him in a casket. Stirred to life, so to speak, centuries later in Los Angeles by gay antique hunters, he steps into thesoulful '70s and splits his energies between feeding his bloodlust andwooing a young beauty (Vonetta McGee), a dead ringer for his long-deadwife. 3-0 out of 5 stars Through The Black Of Night, I Gotta Go Where You Are
Nothing like being prone to nostalgia!
4-0 out of 5 stars william marshall make "blacula" better than it should be.
this blaxplotion horror movie gets it's power and charm from william marshall's forceful job as an african prince bitten by dracula and later brought back to life in 1970's watts. the story gets silly in spots but just as it is about to fold under it's own weight, marshall pulls it back and makes a 2 star movie into a 4 star tour de force. the fact that hollywood never really gave this great actor better roles is the shame of the movie world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Modern Turn On The Old Vampire Legend
I've always had a particular fondness for this film which I believe was a "first" in a lot of ways in 1972, but rather sadly it seems to now be regarded as a bit of a joke by alot of modern audiences more's the pity. Released in early 1972 just as the Vampire cycle of films in both America and England was coming to a close "Blacula", provided a unique twist on the Vampire legend and presented us with a very urbane black Vampire played by deep voiced William Marshall. His vampire is ultimately quite a tragic figure when you learn the facts of how he got to that state and Marshall in his performance is not only up to carrying on the vampire legend but also manages to depict his character for most part in a highly sympathetic light that breathed life into the old legend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Im gonna get you laughin
Rarely will will you find a movie with this many laughs from beginning to end. The cast is amazing from Issic Hayes to Bernie Casey and the laughs and the sight gags just keep on comming. I compare the humor in this movie to the likes of Airplane and Police squad it,s that funny. Like all super hero movies this has a moral and a message which is even funnier that the plot.I would highly recomend this movie to any one who needs some serious laughs. It,s rared R for a reason mainly the language but that is part of the movies charm. The language does not really offend it just is.

5-0 out of 5 stars How did he go to the bathroom with all that stuff on???
The best way to sum up this film is by saying that this is one of the funniest movies I have seen. This film ranks right up there with Airplane and Blazing Saddles. And by that I mean that after watching this film you will find yourself quoting lines from this film for years to come. I first saw this film over 15 years ago and to this day I still find it hilarious. Even though I have seen it many times and I know all the jokes I still laugh at them. This film is that funny. This is the Wayans Bros. back when they first got started and were at there best. This film is a parody of every blaxploitation film ever made. And it is funny picking out refernces to the different films. Also keep an eye out for cameos from various actors. And always pay attention to things that are happening in the background. 15+ years later and I am still finding things happening in the background that I missed before. So order this film sit back and be prepared to laugh so hard that you cry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie but disappointing DVD package
One of the funniest I've ever seen. One of the funniest movies of the 80's. But the DVD quality is horrible. Since its not an anamorphic transfer the quality is grainy. The DVD only has 3 gigs of data so that means the movie was compressed. You would think a greatly written and acted movie would have a commentary and extras features. Not on this!! This movie deserved better treatment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Freddie Gibbs is Back ! ! !
This was the infinitely more popular sequal to BLACK CAESAR (American International Films and Blaxploitation's answer to THE GODFATHER.)In truth, BLACK CAESAR is really where the story is at... but HELL UP IN HARLEM is a lot more visually exciting in terms of costumes and action.Basically it takes up where CAESAR ended finding every loose string it could, and using them for HK style movie cut fast paced action and chase scenes. As for the soundtrack... you can get it on CD now(!) CEASAR's soundtrack was by JB - - but I think Edwin Starr actually gave him a good run for his money capturing all that Starsky and Hutch meets SPEED type action...
1-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic piece of trash...I'd rather see Amos and Andy or Beulah.
I mean this stuff was horrible. The minute the man put the gun up to the little boy's temple, I was out of this picture and I mean way out. That kind of stuff should have been edited out of this pic. And speaking of the editing, this picture was edited to not make sense by having certain scenes that have nothing to do with the premise of the film to sadly become a part of this abysmal movie. On the dvd's special feature as to how the film was made, the director, Mr. Cohen stated that the editor doesn't include this picture on his resume and rightfully so. This picture was a disgrace to filmmaking in general and ought to be shown to NYU film students as to how you should not make a movie.

Hell Up In Harlem w/Fred "The Hammer" Williamson and directed by the one and only, Larry Cohen! If that alone doesn't make you hit the purchase button, then the hell with ya.Harlem continues pretty much immediately after Black Caesar left off.The very last scene in Caesar is changed a bit-he's no longer beaten by a mob-in order to continue the story.Tommy still has the list of corrupt officials, and naturally the corrupt officials still want the thing.Tommy's dad, a minor character in the first film, is now a major player as he goes through a big change from humble old guy to big city crime boss.Tommy's ex is still hanging around, but she's pretty much treated like a doormat the entire time, and Tommy only seems to care once she's already dead.He finds a new spouse though, a religious chick who seems to jump in the sack with Tommy a little too easily(not that much different from real life I suppose).Tommy tries to leave his crime life behind, but do you think that actually works?Once a traitorous schmuck takes over Tommy's old territory, kills his dad and attempts to kill Tommy, well there's hell to pay.Hell Up In Harlem, that is!Tommy goes into Rambo mode in the last half hour of the film. This sequel is more action oriented than Black Caesar.Caesar, like Scarface, was more of a crime drama about how a small time crook makes it big.Harlem is more focused on the butt kickin', and The Hammer has no problem dishing it out.Good times. ... After he sang the praises of a certain black private dick named Shaft (but before he started slinging hash in the little town of South Park), mega-baritone crooner Isaac Hayes got a chance to personally bust some heads in this little known but ultra-cool blaxploitation classic. 4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Action Film From the Chef in "South Park"
Issac Hayes carrying the whole weight of an action film alone?A film starring HIM???At first I thought it's ridiculous.Well, he is a great singer, but ....Then I watched this film, and twice, and am convinced. He should do that more!!Yes, I acknowledge he cannot act like DeNiro or Pacino, and the story of his love interest is as convincing as love between Josh, Ben, and Kate in "Pearl Harbor."But given a right material like this, his towering physical presence makes up for anything single-handedly.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best action movies ever made
Here's a screenplay that should be studied in film school.Seriously.It starts out with a bang and holds your interest for a slammin' first act. Then, just when you're sayin' to yourself, "OK, this is fun, but where the hell is it going?" the movie makes a 180-degree turn at the 30-minute mark and totally peels out into something you've never seen before. One of the few instances where 3 writers on an action movie is actually a GOOD thing (especially since one of them is Michael Allin, who wrote ENTER THE DRAGON, and another is Oscar Williams, who gave us THE FINAL COMEDOWN and BLACK BELT JONES).Brilliantly directed by Jonathan Kaplan.Solid supporting performances from Alan Weeks, Nichelle Nichols, Dick Miller, Stan Shaw, Stymie Beard from the Little Rascals, and especially Sam Laws, who always turns up as a character named "Dinwiddie" in Kaplan's early films (see also THE STUDENT TEACHERS, THE SLAMS, and WHITE LINE FEVER).Special mention should also go to Yaphet Kotto, who one year earlier had claimed that his role in LIVE AND LET DIE was racist, but apparently thought nothing of collecting a paycheck here by playing a murderous pimp (or, even worse, two years later in DRUM, where he portrayed a slave who is stripped nude, hung upside down, and asswhipped to a bloody pulp). Also, you gotta love any movie featuring an Italian hitman named "Joe Dante" (Kaplan and future GREMLINS director Joe Dante were both working for Roger Corman at the time this movie was produced.I think WHITE LINE FEVER also features a character named Joe Dante).Last but not least, the score by Isaac Hayes is amazing. If you can find the double-CD (paired with his equally great THREE TOUGH GUYS soundtrack), grab it!I play it all the time, and it's always being sampled by hip hop performers.Definitely check this sucker out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happening Film

Shot on the streets of New York, writer-director Larry Cohen capturesthe bustle and color of the city in this violent, low-budget crime film. Ambitious Tommy Gibbs (a swaggering, self-confident Fred Williamson) has risen from shoeshine boy to Harlem crime lord, but he wants a bigger piece of the pot. With a racist, high-ranking cop (Art Lund) in his pocket, he begins his expansion with a bloody takeover bid but finds himself betrayed from within and the target of both the cops and the mob. Cohen invests this fast-paced tale (partially inspired by the 1930 gangster classic Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A tough, gritty blaxploitation classic not to be missed
Black Caesar (1973) is one heck of a good movie.I hate the term blaxploitation that is used to describe movies of this genre because it implies that these sorts of films are somehow second-class entries in the world of cinema.Black Caesar is a first-class ride from start to finish, taking as much from classic gangster films of the 1930s and 1940s as it does from earlier blaxploitation films such as Shaft.Larry Cohen gave us a tough, mean, dirty, gritty film that tells it and shows it like it is: plenty of cursing, gunplay, blood, profanity, nudity, and racism.I have heard that the starring role was originally written for Sammy Davis, Jr.Nobody loved Sammy more than I do, but there's just no way he could have done the things that Tommy Gibbs does effectively.A lot of people deride the acting skills of Fred Williamson, which makes no sense to me; the man is just fantastic in this film.
