5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic
This has to be the most wonderful musical ever.My family has worn out so many tapes, we can't wait for it to finally come out in DVD.I would recommend this to anyone who loves music and comedy.Children absolutely are fascinated with all of the dancing and love to sing along.Everyone should experience this once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gilbert and Sullivan!!!
I first saw this version as a child when it originally came out and I really am dissappointed that I can't own it yet!!! It is one of my favorite operas and I think the version with Angela Lansbury is the best!!! You would think that with all of these known actors that this film would be on DVD. It has always been a favorite and really helped open the door to music as a child!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Favorite!
I love Gilbert & Sullivan and I love The Pirates of Penzance. I have the Broadway version (Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt) on DVD, however, this movie version will always be my favorite. I really wish they would produce a DVD. Please??????

Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is a rogue pirate. He was exiled from his crew and left on an island. Jack managed to escape the island and is now looking for revenge and wants his ship back. Jack's former crew invade the town of Port Royal looking for a medallion that could rid them of their curse. Let's face it, has there been a more fun and memorable pirate movie since 1952 when Burt Lancaster and his silent sidekick Ojo swashbuckled bad guys, slid down awnings, and saved the girl?Go ahead, search your brain.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good Account
The film is adaptation of the C.S. Foresters first novel in the Hornblower series "The Happy Return", in the USA this was titled "Beat To Quarters" with a little added plot from a "Ship of The Line" (not three novels as other reviewers have stated). The Happy Return was originally written as a stand alone book and C.S. forester conceived the idea whilst on a voyage home after a stint writing a film scripts in Hollywood. Although a very British subject Gregory Peck portrays the part of the stiff Hornblower very well. Forester himself wrote he was very happy with the results and in many ways this version is closer to the original idea than the later TV versions. Gregory Peck plays the man alone in charge of vessels a long way from home. Forester conceived the story not so much a story of ships, heroes and battles but of class barriers and the loneliness of command. The story is about throwing together of Hornblower a Captain of middle class background and Lady Barbara, sister of Duke of Wellington, well played by Virginia Mayo, I regret however that her accent does not bear up to scrutiny very well.He is already married so is not free and in any event he is too low a social class to jump the great social divide. In he close fines of a small vessel a long way form home passions and temptations are strong. The story does depart from the original novel in one important aspect by making Lady Barbara ill on the voyage home so Captain Hornblower can care for sick lady in the already confined circumstance. Apart from that I have very little to argue with. Forester went on to write ten Hornblower novels with this film sitting in the middle of the completed sequence. If you fond of the character then this is very good starting point and to my mind gets to the heart of what the writer originally conceived. I only hope that a good DVD version is put out soon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peck is Perfect...
Peck is the perfect Hornblower, when you read the books this is who you will see after watching this wonderful film,(I have seen it on TCM).C.S. Forester, the author of the books wrote the screenplay and it shows, very true to the character and he did a wonderful job in working in the best from the first three books, which I feel are the best ones he wrote.(If you have a teenage son, do him a favor and buy him the complete set, they are much better than anything on TV and are great reads for adults also.)The current TV movies on HH should do the same and put some teeth into the writing and stick closer to the books. This film should really be put on dvd and they should add a lot of extras concerning the author, how popular the books were around the world and also include a doc. about the time period of "iron men and wooden ships"...

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, the battle scene!
This is one instance where both the original film in the thirties and the modern one are excellent - especially, in both the battle scene. It is easy to critique these movies for historical inaccuracies, but the gist is right on the money. This was a major and a meaningful victory for the United States and January 8th was a national holiday until the time of the Civil War. This last victory confirmed the US as a truly independent nation -our "Second War of Independence" - whereas beforehand the Europeans had ignored international law in dealings with us. See Robin Reilly's The British at the Gates - although the battle was fought after the signing of the peace treaty, the treaty was deliberated worded so the Brits could keep N.O. for a naval station, if they had won. They hesitated after landing because of an audacious (i.e., courageous) assault by the citizens of the city; their artillery, before the main attack, was blown to pieces by American guns; and their own assault - by Wellington's Heroes - was stopped cold by a collection of militiamen, Indians, civilians - and pirates. (Aside: one British author on the subject was miffed because an American had described Pakenham's wife, on board ship, being horrified on seeing his body returned in a barrel of rum - "Pakenham was not married!"Yes.... but it was his mistress who was horrified!) Watch the movie and be proud again to be an American!

About 1959, I would have been 8 years old, my great aunt Louise saw "The Buccaneer" and had a stroke. She had a stroke each time she saw it.She saw it 5 more times and died.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big, Lavish Hollywood Epic
I used to love these types of big, bold, colorful costume epics as a kid and I still like them today. It's been a number of years since I've seen The Buccaneer but it was always one of my favorites.Directed by Anthony Quinn the film stars Charlton Heston as General Andrew Jackson and Yul Brynner as pirate Jean LaFitte and is sent against the backdrop of the war of 1812.Lafitte and his pirates control a local and strategically placed Island near New Orleans. While he refrains from attacking American vessels he's still not in the good graces of Jackson.Jackson is faced with a dire dilemma...the British are massing a large force and planning to attack New Orleans and the American forces are vastly outnumbered. They turn to ally with LaFitte.Lafitte's men want them to side with England as they think they will certainly win, but LaFitte gets assurances from Jackson that his men will be pardoned if they aid the Americans. This deal is complicated when one of the Pirates under LaFittes command attacks an American ship and kills everyone except a boy who escapes.Even though LaFitte new nothing about the attack he accepts responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald
5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... The swashbuckler genre bumped into science fiction in 1954 for one of Hollywood's great entertainments. The Jules Verne story of adventure under the sea was Walt Disney's magnificent debut into live-action films. A professor (Paul Lukas) seeks the truth about a legendary sea monster in the years just after the Civil War. When his ship is sunk, he, his aide (Peter Lorre), and a harpoon master (Kirk Douglas) survive to discover that the monsteris actually a metal submarine run by Captain Nemo (James Mason). Along with the rollicking adventure, it's fun to see the future technology that Verne dreamed up in his novel, including diving equipment and sea farming. The film's physical prowess is anchored by the Nautilus, an impressive full-scale gothic submarine complete with red carpet and pipe organ. In the era of big sets,Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney fans don't hesitate to buy this!
I purchased this as simply and add on to my ever growing Disney DVD collection. I did not really expect much. What a wonderful surprise awaited me inside this little package. The movie was very good, but the special features made it excellent. I learned so much from watching them about the Disney studios at the time of the filming as well as about Walt Disney himself. The features also included great detailed info about the making of the film, the musical score and many many other intersting things. This is a must own for Disney fans and Sci-Fi movie fans. I assure you, you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I probably don't need to add another 5 star review, but...
I really, really like this movie! It is THE best adaptation of any Jules Verne movie I have seen. While the special effects aren't amazing, they were great for the time (I mean, when was this thing made? In the 50's or 60's I'm pretty sure). James Mason turns out a wonderful performance as Captain Nemo, the tortured genius of the sea, and the other actors played their parts very, very well. Watch the movie and read the book, they're both quite excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Entertaining After All These Years
I've always been a sucker for Submarine Movies, and as a kid, this one really captured my imagination. The Nautilus is rendered here with amazing, gothic detail. The film also has a great story and themes, and some fine performances, and underwater action. I recently watched it again with my own kids. I was a little concerned that with today's rapid fire non-stop action kiddie movies, they would be bored by it. In fact, they were quite entertained by it and watched the squid sequence over several times. I also still found it very entertaining. As far as the extras go, don't miss the original "Sunset Squid" sequence which was scrapped in favor of the one which was used in the film. It is hilariously bad: you can see the wires on the tentacles. A smart decision to drop this one. The short documentary on the real Humboldt squid is also worth a look. ... Read more

The classic Ernest Hemingway novel about man battling nature and the demons within himself is adapted admirably in this 1958 film starring the legendary Spencer Tracy. Playing the fisherman who goes on an intense and futile quest as he contemplates his own nature, Tracy turns in a spellbinding performance of understated power. He plays an itinerant Cuban fisherman whose luck at catching his prey has been poor of late, until he becomes embroiled in an intense pursuit of a giant marlin and in the process must confront his own frailties. Though the visual aspect of the film seems dated, Tracy is more than enough reason to see this effort at bringing one of the modern classics of literature to life on the screen. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Faithful to the novel
This version of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is a faithful adaptation of the novel. The story focuses on Santiago, an old man who has spent 84 days without catching a fish. Spencer Tracey plays the old man to perfection for the most part, as he sets out on the 85th day to capture his big prize. While it isn't a movie that blows you away with either script or action, it is a film with a purpose.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Hemingway adaptation
Spencer Tracy gives a powerful performance as Santiago, the desperate old fisherman who must struggle to subdue and then keep the giant marlin that represents his salvation.Director John Sturges and screenwriter Peter Viertel retain much of Ernest Hemingway's symbolism, making of Santiago a Christ-like figure.A more apt Biblical analog might be Job; like him, Santiago endures the indignities and strife thrust upon him, but perseveres and endures while retaining his appreciation of nature and simple pleasures./
5-0 out of 5 stars The Old Man...and the Sea
The title says it all. The most compelling thing to note in the story of Santiago, (the lead character)is the implication that any of his contemporaries would likely have reacted to his plight in the same way. Not through any special courage, but through a plain lack of choice. A simple fisherman on a hard luck streak, he does the only thing he can do, he keeps fishing. The sea is the only thing he has ever known, and so he turns to it day after day despite recent failure.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Want To See This Great Movie Put On DVD!
I think that The Sea Gypsies is a great movie! I first watched it on TV and I just really enjoyed watching it. It is about a widower who decides to sail around the world with his children and also winds up with a female reporter and also discovers a runaway orphan who has hidden on the boat and they wind up getting caught in a storm that wrecks the boat and they get stranded on an uninhabited Alaskan Island and must try to find a way off the island, especially before the long cold winter sets in. I would love to see this movie put on DVD! The cast of actors in this movie includes Robert Logan, Nikki Jameson-Oleson, Heather Rattray, Shannon Saylor and Damitri Patterson. Because Robert Logan and Heather Rattray who play father and daughter in this movie also played a father and daughter in The Adventures of the Wilderness Family movies a lot of people tend to think that in The Sea Gypsies they are playing the same characters from The Wildnerness Family movies but they aren't. They are playing completely different characters who also happen to be a father and his daughter. I highly recommend this movie and I'm waiting for it to be put on DVD!

1-0 out of 5 stars I Beg To Differ
Sure, I recall seeing this film duing its release in New York City, just before The Rockettes performance! I know that it seems like a great family film, but it was just too much of a rip-off from the Wilderness family films. This was meant to be a casual family film to watch, like The Parent Trap, and not a huge money-making blockbuster. I can only say that I'm glad we didn't pay to see the film in 1978, and I still won't pay to see it now. Give it to me for FREE and I MIGHT watch it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhhhh! Sweet nostalgia.
It seems that I'm not the only one who caught this gem of a movie on HBO during the 80's. In fact, it was the first summer we had cable TV. I would sit, with my siblings, watching it maybe three times a week. This is one of those "good, clean" family movies they just don't make anymore. Back when film makers didn't thumb their noses at their mothers by putting unneccesary and inappropriate content in their movies just because they could!

5-0 out of 5 stars kipling gets a classic treatment
i had never seen this movie, and i dont know why! freddie bartholomew (top-billed as a teen!) is an obnoxious rich kid who falls overboard and is rescued by portuguese fisherman spencer tracy. over the next few months a bond forms between the two that is both honest and touching. a terrific olio of pathos, comedy, melodrama, and good common sense make victor flemings adaptation of the rudyard kipling novel (which im embarrassed to admit i never read) one of the best movies ive seen. great supporting work by lionel barrymore, john carradine, mickey rooney, melvyn douglas, more. and freddie is quite the beauty here. a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yo Ho Little Fish Don't Cry Don't Cry, Don't Cry"~Right of Passage On The High Seas
Who could ever forget the image of happy-go-lucky Manuel Fidello (Spencer Tracy) turning the handle on his little accordion box singing in that gentle, infectious Portuguese accent, "Yo ho little fish don't cry don't cry". If you're a fan of classic films you know this is a scene from Spencer Tracy's signature movie, `Captains Courageous' released in '37.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sum of winner wills!
The febrile pen of Jack, London, plus the fit direction of Michael Curtiz, and the superb performance of Edward G. Robinson as the evil commander of the ship make of this movie one of the best exponents in its genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerhouse Performance By Edward G. Robinson!!!
I saw this movie on late night televison a couple of nights ago and it has stayed with me ever since. It is an adaptation of the Jack London novel and the late Edward G. Robinson gives a powerhouse performance as Wolf Larssen , the sadistic captain of a sealing ship.He is backed in this movie by a fine performance by Ida Lupino. This movie takes me back to a better time when dialogue was all important in movies , there were no car chases or explosions to be seen and actresses kept their clothes on.How times have changed!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling!
"Mutiny on the Bounty" is the fictionalized tale of an actual event whose repercussions are felt to this day.Captain Bligh is charged with sailing the Bounty to Tahiti to harvest breadfruit plants for transplant to the West Indies - what should ultimately be a two-year mission. He is commander of a crew made up of both volunteers and those pressed into service by His Majesty's Royal Navy, the latter group being significantly less enthusiastic about their voyage.Bligh's discipline often crosses the line into malicious sadism and as the months wear on, many in the crew begin to contemplate a mutiny which they execute shortly after departing Tahiti.Bligh is put into a small boat with those of the crew who remain loyal and performs the amazing feat of sailing 3500 miles over 45 days with very little provision. He eventually returns to Tahiti, where first mate Christian and the rest of the mutineers reside along with some of the loyal crew who wouldn't fit on the boat.Capture, return to England, trial, and execution ensue for some of the mutineers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bligh, what a meanie
Great movie, I felt it was a bit slow at times. The performances were outstanding.I enjoyed seeing Franchot Tone. My wife really missed Gable's mustache. I really enjoyed the trailer at the end showing the descendents of the Bounty's crew still living on Pitcairn Island.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tale of the Sea
I was not expecting much from this film. Most historical movies that win Academy Awards are dull and lifeless filled with facts and not enough humanity. I should have taken more notice of the amazing cast before I jumped to conclusions because this film completely changed my mind.

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. Patrick Stewart makes his entrance late into this telefilm, stringy hair hanging from under his three-cornered hat, his peg leg tapping out his arrival on deck. This Captain Ahab is a hard, driven man--you can see it in his burning eyes--and there's no question he has the resolve and the mad devotion to complete his quest at all costs: kill the white whale that took his leg. Franc Roddam's mini-series adaptation of Herman Melville's classic novel (filmed previously by John Huston in 1956) manages its budget wisely: a judicious use of digital effects creates a terrifying vision of the great white whale, and Roddam's eye captures a near-epic quality. Henry Thomas's earnest performance as the young seaman Ishmael can't compete with Stewart's intensity, and Gregory Peck's cameo as Father Mapple is a hollow echo of his passionate Ahab from Huston's Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars English teacher gives this DVD a "C"
My American Lit class had reached Civil War era literature toward the end of the semester. While I wanted to give them a taste of Melville's classic novel, there was no way they would be able to read a 600 page book in time for the final; so I decided to show the DVD instead.I originally wanted to show the Gregory Peck version, but our school's Media Center only had Patrick Stewart version.I had asked a fellow colleague about showing this DVD, and she said she had a positive experience with it when she showed it to her students the previous year.
1-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A BIG PEG LEG TO FILL!
It's always interesting to watch actors in their attempts to overcome the stigma of being typecast.I suppose it is a serious problem. After all, apocryphal accounts abound about actors who, having played a too memorable part in a movie, such as the woman who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz, end up unemployed because no one can see them as anything else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for High School English Students

Editorial Review

Sold into shipboard slavery by his wicked uncle, the newly orphaned David Balfour turns his misfortune into adventure in this Disney adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel. Before he can get back to the Scottish Lowlands to claim his birthright, the young man experiences mutiny, shipwreck, clan wars, trickery, illness, and bagpipe playing. Most of this is at the side of the high-spirited Highlander Alan Breck. The Stewart clan leader crashes into his prison ship, jumps aboard, and commandeers both the ship and the boy's life, tutoring him in the ways of subterfuge, battle, and loyalty. Despite the relatively heavy subject matter, the tone is light and the action swift. Add the gorgeous--and genuine--Celtic scenery, and it makes for a quickly passed 95 minutes. Although this 1960 film has no graphic violence, a boy is killed aboard ship and other more anonymous characters die, making this tale more appropriate for gradeschoolers and up. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Waiting For the DVD version
I have nothing to add by qualitative review beside reinforcement of the opinion of it as being a rare masterpiece within the Disney field.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment with 2005 Masterpiece Theater production inspired me to see 1960 film for second time
It was my utter disappointment with the 2005 British production of Kidnapped, as shown on PBS's Masterpiece Theater, that caused me to see for the 2nd time this more faithful 1960 Disney production.Whoever directed the 2005 film completely changed the plot from that found in the original. Not only were scenes not found in the book included in the film, but the names of the two main character's Alan Breck Stewart and David Balfour
5-0 out of 5 stars I COULD NOT AGREE MORE !!!
I agree with the other (more eloquent) reviewers awarding high marks to this film.I own nearly 800 classic movies. My family watches one or two every night. This does not make us experts, but it does make our house short on storage space.

Hands down, this is the best movie (and was one of the first) to come out of the seemingly endless cycle of disaster movies that dominated box offices during the 1970s. It could even be argued that Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EXTRAS
** This is only for the Special Edition DVD**
4-0 out of 5 stars A disaster flick that's a far cry from a disaster!
I hadn't seen this film before watching the remake, and I gave the remake a generous 4 stars ( I say generous because it was undeserved) and after seeing this film and seeing what the remake had to work with I'm appalled the remake wasn't better. At least the ending to this film make sense. The acting here is decent, for a 70's film, and Hackman (who is always top notch) and Winters both did wonderfully. The action and adventure is this film is high intensity, and while the remake did copy a few of this films best scene's the brilliance was lost in the translation.Point being that the original, in this instance, is much better than the remake and should be enjoyed by all who haven't had the opportunity to see it yet.The story is similar in both, both involving a cruise liner flipping over due to a rogue wave, each set in their own time periods, but what makes the films differ is the people aboard. In this film you have a priest (Hackman) struggling to make his way right with god, and he is the one who ushers everyone to safety. He wants to help everyone. In the remake you have a professional gambler only concerned with his own safety. Not that that is the main reason this film is better, for this film also gets you involved with the cast of characters, understanding all of them, knowing all of them and so you thus can be concerned about all of them.I guess all that really needs to be said is that if you're like me and you've only seen the remake, please rent this movie and see the masterpiece that inspired the flop. ...
