Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. 1-0 out of 5 stars Just a bit too much
Barry Longyear's story is perfect. This movie could have been but what was that bull at the end with the whips and factory slaves and that stuff? They should have ended the movie as the story ended and not added that last bit. That totally ruined the movie for me. The novella and its sequel at least give humanity the benefit of a doubt; the war is over and there is an uneasy peace and humanity, if love doesn't prevail, at least strives to be better. In the movie, they made humans brutal savages in the way they treated the Dracs. Did we learn NOTHING from the USA's foray into slavery and brutality? IT seemed that a violent ending was gratuitously grafted onto the movie to make it more palatable to the 13-18 year old testosterone crown, thereby destroying what could have been as perfect a film as the novella was perfect. But, when has Hollywood ever gotten it right? They usually find some way to shoot themselves in the foot.

1-0 out of 5 stars This has been done much better before.
Let's be frank. This is just one more take on "can't we all just get along" idea. How transparent.Dress up the black guy in a silly rubber suit and pretend he's an ALIEN.Make friends by involving him in SPORTS!There aren't many films that make me curse out loud, but this is one of them.Treacly and brain-dead beyond endurance. The only thing that might have saved it would have been a spirited rendition by poor Gossett of "It Isn't Easy Being Green".One of the other reviewers mentioned Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune in HELL IN THE PACIFIC.That film, essentially the same thing, is immeasurably better.Skip this exploitive garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST STAR WARS MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This movie is a great conclusion to a great saga. I have seen all of the Star Wars movies, from the Phantom Menace to Attack Of The Clones to Revenge Of The Sith to A New Hope to The Empire Strikes Back, and now this golden piece of treasure, which is my favorite Star Wars movie ever. The fight scenes are just great, there are a lot more cool new and old characters, Darth Vader is better than ever, I love the funny quotes and interesting moments, and the ending is both sweet and happy. The others were great, but this is the very best. Do not wait another moment. See this movie. It is well worth any money you spend on it. Period. End of discussion. Done.

3-0 out of 5 stars May I Present Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight?
Return Of The Jedi is my least favorite entry in the original Star Wars Trilogy. It is hard to say why I don't like it. The original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back are very hard to top. They are considered too be two of the best films ever made. Return Of The Jedi just seems to be uneven. It's not bad. It's just not as good as the previous installments. The story is written well the beginning and end are fairly strong. The film seemed much lighter than the others. It is good to end on a happy note, but Han Solo's character was totally opposite from the first time we saw him to the end of the film. I also didn't like the whole Ewok storyline. At first they were cute and then they seemed ridiculous. The direction is great. The special effects are fantastic . The acting was decent. Mark Hamill is the only one who has given a constantly solid performance through all three films. I think alot of the cast looked tired and possibly edging on bored. The soundtrack is awesome as usual. Return Of The Jedi just doesn't reach the greatness of the previous two. It feels uneven, the Ewoks are annoying, and the cast members don't look like they are into it. Still, it is a Star Wars film and has greatness no matter what.

1-0 out of 5 stars How can people like this?
As to be honest, i didnt watch the movie to the end. After the girl (whatever her name is) choked jabba the hutt I turned of the television. It left me thinking: what do all these fans see in this mess?

This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team's manager, but the real star of the film--for better or worse--is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great inspirational family film
For any family who enjoys the pasttime of baseball, this film is a fun and enjoyable watch for all.It has enough imagination and action to capture the little ones and enough humor to keep Mom and Dad interested. But more than that, the film is about the power to change for the better, which is a great lesson at any age. Some of the language might be a bit rough for the youngest ones, but if watched as a family, a parent can use the film as an opportunity to explain the value of good choices in life. ... Editorial Review

Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, Jim Carrey is up to all of his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in this live-action movie of Dr. Seuss's holiday classic. He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. (Ages 5 and older.) 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I really love this version of the classic story.Jim Carrey is fabulous as the mean, but lovable Grinch, and Taylor Momsen does a great job as the sweet Cindy Lou Who.
1-0 out of 5 stars youre a vile one, mr. grinch ... & mr. howard ... & mr. carrey ... & on & on & on
is this the worst movie ive ever seen?nah.ive seen "mchales navy joins the air force"; ive seen "captain milkshake"; ive even seen "angel angel down we go" (the only movie in the history of americn international pictures to lose money)!but of big budget mainstream flicks, this IS the worst.jim carrey, never a favorite, has never been more disgusting than he is here.director ron howard, also not a favorite, lets loose with all his worst excesses.and the little girl who plays cindy lou who -- well, im reminded of the unprintable comment by buddy rich many years ago about what hed like to do to donny osmonds skull.ted geisel (dr seuss) wrote a brilliant little book nearly half a century back.a few years later it was adapted (& expanded) into a 25-minute cartoon: already dangerous ground, but under the guidance of chuck jones, it got pulled off.but this 2 hour disaster betrays everything good about the book and the beloved christmas special.sorry, but i was rooting for the grinch to destroy whoville by the end.
1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This movie was trite, predictable and probably Carrey's worst over acting. Him hamming up the cardiac arrest when the Grinch's heart grew actually made me leave and go play a couple of video games in the lobby.

4-0 out of 5 stars FEATURES GOOD ALIENS or BAD ALIENS: TAKE YOUR PICK!
This original pilot from 1964 [that never aired until almost 30 years went by] is very different from, yet very similar to, the Star Trek that we all know and love. Except for Spock as Science Officer and Majel Barrett as First Officer, the entire crew is different, yet the ship appears the same. The crew [just 203 vs. 400+], however, looks like they are a mix of 1960s beach-party extras and stuntmen. Call it an eclectic cast or maybe just thrown together, take your pick.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can see the seeds of the Star Trek phenomena
The only way to view this video is with your mind firmly locked into the historical context. When Gene Roddenberry first proposed the Star Trek series to network executives, the American television viewers were in the midst of their love affair with the western. Therefore, he described the proposed series as "wagon train to the stars." However, that is not what he gave them, and there were some objections, so a second pilot was requested. 3-0 out of 5 stars "I'll break out of this zoo somehow and get to you!"
One of the most enduring legacies on television actually had a very curious beginning with "The Cage."The first pilot for the original Star Trek series featured the U.S.S. Enterprise and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) but the iconic Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was nowhere to be found.Instead the original captain of the famous Federation starship was none other than Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter). While Captain Pike is still remembered among the fan base, he has faded into obscurity among the general public.Yet his one moment in the spotlight was notable for setting the progressive and high-minded tone of the Kirk-led adventures that would follow.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fear, bullies, aggression, and ugly stereotypes: a toxic brew for kids
This is one of the worst films for kids I have ever seen with my four year old son.It is built around fear, bullies, aggression, and ugly stereotypes. This film is a bonanza for therapists and sociologists, and it goes a long way towards explaining some of the pathologies of this society. How about a movie that lets kids be kids, instead of this onslaught of cheap sentiments and terror? The calculated story uses every trick to scare kids. The limited imagination of the story writers is particularly insulting. Is everything just about good and evil and the fight for survival? For young kids??In many ways the film is a throwback to Cold War films such as Red Dawn (1984), in which school kids fought a Soviet invasion (no kidding!).Is "A Bug's Life" how we are supposed to prepare our kids for the war on terrorism? In sum, this film is a toxic brew.Kids deserve better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bug's Life (Collector's Edition)
A Bug's Life (Collector's Edition)~ Dave Foley is one of the best animated movies that I have ever seen period. The animation is top of the line and this movie is so much better then Antz. The story begins with ants collecting food for an offering, and then our "hero" manages to trash this cermoney and then trouble begins. The story is well developed and well written and unlike "Antz" we are here spared pseudo political messages and this is good since the movie is after all made for children and not adults. One important message that is sent is to children is to tollerate different people and not to judge people. The music is splendid and the dialogue is right on the money. Highly recommended indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pixar is always a sure bet for great entertainment

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess'sfamous novel is a masterpiece.Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time, Excellent Kubrick Film
First off, this was not an easy bood to make into a movie, but Stanly Kubrick did an excellent job of doing so, not cutting out too many of the details either. This movie was way ahead of it's time, with excellent cinemetography, great acting, and excellent adaptation to script of a book that tells a tale of young Alex and his gang in a world he live raise "ultraviolence".A nice glimpse into the mind of an Antisocial.Rent this, Buy this, worth owning. One of the many of a series of Excellent Kubrick films of the 70's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second movie in a very special trilogy.
I ama fan of Stanley Kubrick, and I can see something very special about this movie, that makes me consider this one as the second installment of a so called, by myself, "trilogy". 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange & The Shining, they three share a feeling of loneliness, a sense of an external consciousness who is watching, from outside the Universe, the characters in the films, there is a feeling of a paranormal environment, manifest by the lighting, the sharp contrast of colors white, blue, red and fog in some of the scenes. And, this special environment is made even more surreal by the very special soundtracks of "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti , "Timesteps" by Wendy Carlos, or thescore in The Shining by Carlos' couple too. Perhaps these three stories are part of the intervention of the Black Monoliths on the development of Mankind...Who knows? Buy these movies, they are highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars great film by kubrick but what else is new
this film is a has a very nice story about a man named alex who loves to rape woman and fighting/stealing,but that all changes when he goes to jail. then while in jail he hears about a thing that a doctor is doing to stop people from being bad. so later the doctor picks alex to be like a ginny pig for this test. he is forced to watch horrable things while hes eyes are forced open. after getting these test alex can one longer be bad because if he does he gets real sick..

This retro-futuristic adventure depicts a 1964 in which Hitler won the war and Joe Kennedy Sr. is U.S. president. Europe is known as Germania and opens its borders to American journalists, hoping to line up the U.S. as an ally against Russia. Set design and costumes very effectively create a potent and prosperous state, culled both from imagination and the history books. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles in Nazi Germany.
D-day had failed. Kennedy is president, Joseph sr. that is, not John. Hitler is about to celebrate his 75th birthday. That was all the exposition I needed. It's springtime for Hitler in Germainia. We lost. It is the early 60's & the cold war has taken a hard left turn from what we know happen. The Germans are still fighting the Russians. Hitler wants a peace treaty with The United States. It is about to happen. President Kennedy is coming to Berlin & bringing a lot of reporters. One problem: the Final Solution, what we now know as the Holocaust has never been made public. Any living officials with first hand knowledge are being bumped off. One of these murders becomes public & has to appear to be investigated. SS officer March(Rutger Hauer) is the police detective assigned to sweep it all under the rug. He is a sympathetic Nazi with a conscience & a throughly brain-washed young son. At this point, the SS become the good guys & the Gestapo, as usual the criminals, covering up. An American reporter, Charlie (Miranda Richardson) gets wind of what she sees as the story of her career. Nuff said. The tone & mood of this movie is how victorious, post war, Nazi Germany might have been. A repressive facist regime to be sure but also a bit mellowed. It was made for tv & that shows & it never made into a dvd. It is a very worthy watachable alternative history movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rutger Hauer in a fantastic story
I thought this movie was excellent. The story was really interesting and kind of a "What If" movie as in "What if Germany had won WWII". Rutger Hauer is excellent as the lead character and SS police officer who is investigating a murder in Germania the country that exist now that Germany has defeated Europe in WWII. Joe Kennedy is the president of the United States and their is going to be a summit to end this "cold war". Eager to make peace with the U.S. because of the horrible on going war in on the Russian front, Germany is trying to tie up some embarassing loose ends involving the unkown Holocaust that has been going on against the Jews.
3-0 out of 5 stars What novel is this based on?
Whatever novel this is based on, it sure isn't Robert Harris's.I finished reading the novel minutes before popping in the movie and was surprised to see that the whole thing was rewritten.Hardly a sub-plot remains.

A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. Populating this Japanese-animation fantasy film are the titular fire-breathing dragons, the wizards, a knight, a maiden, some elves, and--in a feminist departure from tradition--a heroic bowwoman. The battles are fairly mild and most of the virtuous characters recover, making this a good choice for family viewing, as well as a staple for the fantasy fanatic's video library.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Release a DVD already!!!!!
I haved loved this movie ever since I was a child.Unfortunately it's cover has never done this movie justice, the animation is so detailed, very much like the style of the movie The Hobbit. This is such a classic that it would be both a shame and a loss to future generations if this story was not rereleased to DVD.The dragons are depicted as intellegent magestic beings with personalities instead of 2 demensional snarling & preditory creatures (well most of them anyway). I think this was one of the 1st projects to approach Dragons this way, paving a way for movies like Dragonheart. It also tries to shed some light on dragon issues like breathing fire and flight. This is a truly beautiful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
I watched this as a child, and came upon it by accident on YouTube. It's an amazing under-rated movie--especially considering all the commercial garbage that came out in the 80s. The animation is interesting, though nothing near the quality of today--but compared to other things from the 80s it kicked [...](and the silly cover does it NO justice--btw).
5-0 out of 5 stars DVD! DVD! DVD! DVD!
I will have to agree wholeheartedly that Flight of Dragons was (and still is)my favorite childhood movie. In the 80's, my parents searched far and wide for this movie- and paid like $40 dollars for the VHS, which actually is misprinted as BETA. That was quite possibly my best Christmas present in memory. Now, at 25 years of age, I still LOVE this movie, although I only watch it a few times a year in fear that the tape will wear out. It is a tragedy that this movie has not yet been released on DVD. I had no idea that this movie touched so many people, which is all the more reason to release it on DVD. "...Is it the past I seek, when I look up to the heavens, believing in the magic that I know could never be. I want to go where they are goin, into the world they've been, can I open up my mind enough to see...Flight of Dragons..." ON DVD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME FOR A REMAKE!
I truly beleve the disney verion is better than the fox verion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanment for any age.
How wonderful it is to be able to experience what is surely a cherished family classic for a generation of people from another country. This version of "My Neighbor Totoro" features excellent video quality as well as a very well done English audio track for those who wish to avoid reading subtitles.
1-0 out of 5 stars New Voice and Sound Tracks!
I was very displeased with the newest version of Totoro. With Dakota and Elle Fannings voices, as well as all the other new voices, made the movie sound horrible and very unlike the original version of Totoro! The newest version could never be compared to the original version! The original version of Totoro should have never been fixed and it will ALWAYS be better than the newest version! I couldn't even get through the first disc, without hearing the new annoying voice sound tracts! VERY DISSAPOINTING! What a waste of money... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars X2 is an awesome film!
With dazzling special effects, spectacular battles, touching romance and sacrafice, and an even edgier Wolverine, X2: X-Men United is even better than the original! The second installment of the X-Men Trilogy, United proves to be a fantastic addition to the series, as well as a great action film on its own!
5-0 out of 5 stars X-MAN-- SO COOOOL
X-man is my favorite movie. The characters are Wolverine/Iceman/and Flameman. It takes place in the White House. It takes place in the present.I like the movie for the fighting. One reason I like it is the way X-Man sticks knives out of his hands.I like the way they fight.I think kids 8 and up would like the movie because of thier powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than The First!
X-Men fans, comic book fans, action movie fans, and all-around good movie fans, SEE THIS MOVIE!The first movie set the bar high, but this movie tops it.Right from the beginning you know you are in for a real treat.I was spellbound the first time I watched it, and have watched it again and again since. This is a title that is worth owning, as are the other 2 X-Men movies (both 1 and 3).Once again Hugh Jackman pulls off playing Wolverine impeccably, and the other characters deliver too.If you are a comic book fan or an action movie fan, getting the X-Men trilogy is a no-brainer.Enjoy! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Quest
This is a rare family movie which anyone at any age can watch without fear of profane language or indecent exposures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I Found this movie enjoyable. The movie does have a slowish pace but still a magical feel to it. the movie was filmed in Australia Victoria in a little town called Woods Point and nearby Matlock. The views of the Victorian Alps are great and I did enjoy the time when they shot the film on location. Im trying to locate a copy of this film on either VHS or DVD. This movie has names other than "The Quest" (USA), "The Go Kids" (UK) and "Frog Dreaming" (AUS). This is a film for 7 years and up.

4-0 out of 5 stars too bad this isn't on dvd...
As mentioned, this movie wouldn't be condsidered a classic. It is pretty cheesy and I think Henry Thomas is the only "big" name in it.I remember watching this movie when I was young, maybe like 9 or 10.I know I've seen it at least a dozen times. It's one that a younger person would have to see a couple of times to get the gist of it.But after you get the idea, it's still pretty entertaining.I would recommend it forchildren age 8 & up.You may have to explain things, but as far as adult content, there's virtually none that I can think of, maybe a swear word here and there, but I don't think it would be anything a kid these days hasn't heard.Seems like it would be scary, but it's not, once they find out what the "monster" is. ... Editorial Review

This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in Every Sense of the Word!!
Dick Van Dyke brigns to life Caracticous Pott, an inventer whose inventions never seem to work out the way he wants. One thing I didn't realize for the longest time was the play on words in the creation of name. Take Caracticous Pott. He's a 'Crack-Pot' inventor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Memory of the Heart
There are just some movies that will always have a place in my heart and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of those.I still remember when I took my children to see the original and how thrilled they were to see a car that could fly and sail the seas.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Story - Simple Songs
I can't see how this movie can compete with all the newer, more flashy kids' movies that are available. However, the story is simple and sweet and so are the songs. I bought the movie because my autistic daughter likes simple musicals which feature kids and she enjoys listening to me sing the movie's songs which are so easy to learn. There are better choices for Disney movies from this era, like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Soundtrack ever, only Tom Cruise Film Worth watching
Like I said, this is the only Tom Cruise film I have EVER enjoyed. His acting is still wooden and lame, but he plays a young, immature kid, so it suits him still today.I am going to buy the soundtrack again after loseing my last copy.Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fairy-tale - Great DTS sound!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - both versions. The score is really beautiful. It gives you feelings of sadness, fear, happiness - yes all of these in great DTS sound. A younger Tom Cruise in the days when he wasn't so well-known, portrays the fictional character and hero who overtakes evil and restores goodness and light to the world. Great makeup jobs on the Lord of Darkness and the goblins for a 1986 film. Great bonus features and good commentary. What a story! What a fairy-tale!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Epic Fantasy
Long before the success of the "Lord of the Rings", there was "Legend", a movie about good and evil, darkness and light. The story revolves around the mythical faerie creature called the unicorn. As long as unicorns roam the earth, evil can never come to the pure of heart.Due to this, the evil Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) has sent his most evil goblin Blix (Alice Playten) to cut off the horn of the unicorn.Without their horn, the unicorn loses its power and the earth will be shrouded in darkness.
