5-0 out of 5 stars Man Vs Monster
One of my all time favorite B movies from the 80's. Not even given close to the recognition it deserves, this film is one of the absolute best cheap ass sci-fi movies out there. I too cannot wait for this to show up on DVD and quite frankly I'm shocked that isn't even being discussed to my knowledge. In the same genre..Killer Klowns from Outer Space made it to DVD..I truly can't see why this one cannot. I picked this film up at a local video store back in 1988 and just fell in love with it. Sure it's cheesy..but hey..if you are true B movie fan..then this one is for you. 3 thumbs up! I own the typical VHS version of this film and I'm crossing my fingers for a DVD sometime in the near future.

Editorial Review

The J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy classic set in Middle-earth was adapted into this excellent 1978 animated feature first broadcast on television. Codirectors Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., working from a script by Romeo Muller, are faithful to Tolkien's story and for that alone they get big points. The vocal cast can't be improved upon: Orson Bean is perfect as Bilbo Baggins, the timorous hobbit who grows brave on his adventure with the wizard Gandalf (John Huston). Otto Preminger is the voice of Elvenking, Richard Boone is Smaug, Hans Conreid is Thorin, and Brother Theodore is very effective as the weird Gollum. Terrific for kids and adults alike. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stick toVHS!
Thanks to all the reviewers who panned the DVD because of the bad audio. I was thinking of buying the dvd to replace my vhs copy but i'll wait and transfer it myself since my copy's still in pretty good shape.
3-0 out of 5 stars Its interesting
I really think that it was great that they made an attempt at bringing the classic tale to the screen. I just got my D.V.D. of it today and watched it. One thing I missed - one thing that is in the book, but not in the movie - was that Beorn wasn't in it, neither was the Arkenstone. Most of the music is good enough, but while I liked the trolls and spiders, I did NOT like the goblins nor the elves (with the exception of Elrond and his huge 'crown'). Smagol-Gollum's voice was also done well enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Songs and Animation are first class!!!
The Songs are spectacular. I can't say enough about the music in this master piece of Animation. I saw this when I was a little one and I still watch it!!! (I am now 33.) This is a great adventure and you will get it all!!! Gollum's eye will thrill you. The Animation will grab you. You will be singing along before you know it!!! This is an intense movie where the music adds to help tell this great story. The character voices are amazing. The soundtrack is first class!!!! There is even a great dragon, as well as great trolls, swords, dagger animation, armor, waterfalls, battle-scenes, fire, spiders, and treasure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic!!!
Why isn't this on DVD yet???
5-0 out of 5 stars Why did REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 2 have to be so bad?
Well basiclly this is Mothra the giant moth`s first appearence. Anyway, the story is that a giant catterpiller named Mothr rampages Tokyo to find two tiny twin fairies. When going on foot geets too hard, she turn into a giant moth and takes to the air. Why is there a giant plant in the movie? Who knows, who cares. Anyway I definetely recomend MOTHRA to Toho monster fans. I also recomend anyone who reads my review not to watch REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 2, which invlolves a hairy thing that poops out rings when he gets scared, acid spitting starfish, a silly Fairy Mothra and the goofy looking Garu-Garu 2.

The major qualm that most people have with this movie is that it does not fit the vision of the Gor book series. So what. There are far better reasons why not to watch this movie, like Mulletboy.

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. Read more

The original 1947 version of this Valentine Davies story follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. Natalie Wood is the little girl who tells him she doesn't believe in Santa, and Maureen O'Hara and John Payne are the couple who help Kris through a trial in which he must prove he's the jolly fellow from the North Pole. A sweet movie and perennial Christmas favorite, this is one of those movies that gets under your skin and must be revisited every so often. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This film was never bad
I Always loved this film i saw it when i was ten i still enjoy it as an adult. How could anyone even say that "it's so bad that it's good" It was never bad. It's funny, entertaining, magical and has an all-star cast. I also want to comment on Matthew McCurley's(Winchill)acting and how great he was. I mean even though Elijah Wood is the star, McCurley's acting was wonderful, so natural and just plain hilarious! He was the geek who made it big, the boy who gave North the idea. It was just so funny and i don't think anyone else could have pulled it off like he did. Oh and for those of you who haven't seen North don't listen to any bad reviews, this is a film worth watching with the whole family.

3-0 out of 5 stars One point in the film...
I love the part when the kids trick North into thinking his parents don't want him back. They record them on video saying how much they really want him back.Afterwards, the kids say to his parents that if they don't get him back, they can adopt another boy named Hugh. The parents say "We don't want Hugh, he's not our son!"The kids then edit out the part with North's parents asking him to come back, leaving just the part where they say they don't want Hugh.It sounds like they're saying "We don't want you!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Lighten up bad reviewers!
This movie is not intended to be taken seriously, and to watch it, you have to remember what it was like to be a kid. Kids are a little egocentric(some more than others) and that is where the humor comes in. The stereotypes of all the places North visits are a dead giveaway that this is how these places are percieved in a child's mind. Typical things most people hear about a place, such as the french people being obsessed with Jerry Lewis. I must reiterate, you cannot take it seriously. Those people that find it offensive completly miss the point. The point was that North is a typical kid who doesn't appreciate his parents. The fact that he sees his parents as not appreciative of him is what is typical of children, and what makes him so amusing and adorable. He is not unreasonable in expecting acknowledgement of all his acheievements, and his baffled expression when he tells his coach his problem is just so believable. I think any kid can relate. "A child is born. He is given a life. And he is appreciated by everyone but the parents who gave him that life." That's pretty close if not an exact quote. He doesn't whine when he says this. Just looks confused. And when you see the opening scene of his parents rambling on about their work problems not even listening to each other while North feins a heart attack, you have to agree there is a problem. But it's obvious that they do care, because they finally acknowledge him when he falls out of his chair onto the floor yelling dramatically. The point is parents aren't perfect, although this is an exaggeration of that point. This is one of the things North realizes at the end of the movie, and he is all the wiser for his outrageous adventures.I thought this movie was charming, but not the best family film I ever saw. It could've done without the inappropriate adult humor in some scenes, although most would go over young viewers heads. Like the scene where Bruce Willis is doing stand up and tells a tacky joke about sex, which is one of the more noticable examples. Otherwise, it's worth at least a rental if you have a light-hearted silly side and can relate to kids and their troubles. The celebrity cameos are very entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY -- OUT ON DVD
[..]
4-0 out of 5 stars 50 Tons of Creeping Black Horror!
JACK ARNOLD'S other worthy contribution to 50's CREATURE FEATURES is still a fair-sized Friday midnight-looker. Leo G.Carroll ...formerly Cosmo Topper;& MAN from UNCLE'S Number-1 Section-1 Alexander Waverly...is excellent as irritated--later IRRADIATED-- scientist who makes excellent modern double for Mr. Sardonicus after his experiments with nuclear isotopes go...as they say...awry. The Bad TARANTULA is 10 stories high;hungry;and moves-out like an XK-E. John Agar is A-OK as stalwart hero ;and intrepidly high-healed,impecably coiffed/made-up Maria Corday,is his main-man buddy. Real"hero" of TARANTULA is Arnold's superb CREATURE from the BLACK LAGOON-like lighting and chiaroscuro photography to create atmosphere that's genuinely menacing.
4-0 out of 5 stars A 1950'S CLASSIC!
Sometimes I really wish I had been born 15 years earlier so I would have been able to enjoy great films like "Them" and "Tarantula" at a drive-in movie. That really would have been fun.Tarantula has always been one of my favorites in the Giant insect genre of films and I rank it right up there (almost) with "Them".

2-0 out of 5 stars A weak sequel but still enjoyable to watch!
I enjoyed the first two a lot but the third one seems to be weak. It's nothing close like the first two and the plot didn't seem to make sense to me. The ending was cool but I sure wish they made a BTTF 4 but BTTF 3 seems to be the end of the series. The acting is not bad though but I didn't see any similarities with the first two it was just a newer adventure where they go cowboy but it's still fun to watch if your a BTTF fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Was This the Best Science Fiction Movie Ever Made?
Well, there are five reasons. The first four are found in the review of the DVD set of all five;here is the last one:
3-0 out of 5 stars THE FUNNIEST WESTERN EVER MADE.
*** stars for "Back To The Future, Part III". Well, this movie isn't exactly a western, but it's a nice twist in the direction of the series, and a good conclusion to this excellent saga. This time, Marty (Michael J. Fox) and our favorite mad scientist Doc Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) are stuck in the Old West, and that premise gives a lot of opportunities to play with opposite genres, Western and Sci-Fi.

The classic science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury was a curious choice for one of the leading directors of the French New Wave, François Truffaut. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly faithful adaptation of the Bradbury novel.....
Perhaps one of Truffaut's most ambitious films. One knows we are in for something special when the opening titles of the movie are spoken rather than written and hints to the innovative approach Truffaut has taken to depicting perhaps Bradbury's most popular novel.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Hot
I was disappointed when I went back and checked out this 1966 movie version of Ray Bradbury's famous tale about book-burning.The characters here start off in a world where books and reading are banned. It's an authoritarian world in which the government controls the media. So I had thought this movie made a commentary that would be relevant to the dangerous drift of today's governments. My memory apparently didn't serve me well though. Viewing this Fahrenheit again, I actually found it to be a weak, illogical rendering. I don't think Bradbury could have been too happy with this translation of his story onto the screen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but goody

Enchanting movie especially for kids.It kept the whole family engrossed the whole time.No bombings -- no killings -- just wonderful imaginative fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Omri" One Of The Most Likable Kids Ever On Film
I'm a sucker for nice kids, not those snotty ones seen so often in films from the '60s to the present. In here is a wonderful neat-looking little kid, Hal Sardino, who is unusual in that this is the only movie he ever starred in. To his credit, Scardino went on to live a "normal" life after this film, eventually going to college as a regular student like you and me with no celebrity status.
3-0 out of 5 stars COWBOYS AND INDIANS
Based on a popular children's novel, THE INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD should entertain young children with its tale of a magical cupboard that can bring toys to life.Hal Scardino stars as young Omri who receives this magical gift from his brother. He discovers its qualities when his best friend gives him a toy Indian, and when he puts it in the cupboard, it comes to life, a tiny little live Indian (played with straight frankness by Litefoot). His friend wants a toy too so he puts the cowboy figure in and out comes a swaggering, funny David Keith as the gunslinger.Britain's popular comic Steve Coogan shows up too as a British medic that the boys use to help when both the Indian and the cowboy are wounded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chilling and creepy!
Even by today's horror movie standards, this first black and white film version of H.G. Wells' "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" can be considered a worthy frightfest!Charles Laughton's portrayal of Dr. Moreau is devilishly evil and far superior to Burt Lancaster's in 1977 (that was a good version, though) and Marlon Brando's in 1996 (Oh, man, that version really sucked!).

If you have nothing to do, the weather is rainy and cold and there is nothing to watch or even read in your home, come for this amazing and grotesque characterization. It is delirious portrait of fantastic humor, if I may use this term.
2-0 out of 5 stars "She may have been contaminated."
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman has the best poster of any monster movie from the 1950s, but it's one of the cheapest sci-fi pictures I've ever seen. I saw it yesterday at a local theater as part of a double feature with the giant ant classic Them!, including cartoon, trailers for films like the Ronald Reagan western Law and Order (another film directed by Nathan Juran), and a 1934 Flash Gordon serial.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I love Power Ranger since I was a kid, it was nice to see the Lost Galaxy Ranger back again but the major problem is that this isn't a movie! It's an episode I saw it when they aired Lightspeed Rescue. Leo's voice is 100% different and the Lost Galaxy Morphing was different then the actual episode morphing. I was very disappointed.

A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to it, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Right Impact
After a number of viewings I have decided to share my thoughts on this one.Deep Impact was not reviewed very favorably when it came out but I think most of that the reviewers missed something.
5-0 out of 5 stars can really get to you
ok, you can either love or hate deep impact. for me, i am one of them who loves deep impact. unlike most disaster flicks this one really focuses on the human side of the story but still boast some impressive special effects. the premisis of the story goes like this. two teens discover something in the sky one night and unsure what it is decide to report it. a year goes by and a reporter gets wind of a person named "ellie" and tries to dig it up. then the president makes an announcment that the object the two teens discovered is actually a giant meteor on a crash course to earth that will decimate all of humanity. now as the world prepares for the coming threat, the all star cast must now mend there lives before its too late. this is were it gets me as each story is so heartbreaking and the premisis so dire. by far the best scene in the film is when the reporter and her father both forgive each other just before the comet hits and a title wave comes right at them. by far the best disaster movie, a big recomend. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Watch The Secret of NIMH
After seeing The Secret of NIMH Steven Spielberg wantedd to do a collaboration with Don Bluth. While An American Tale is okay, I must say Don Bluth did a much better job when on his own. 4-0 out of 5 stars This Movie is alright!
I had fun going back to my childhood memories. There is a favorite scene I have. 5 Words. THE GIANT MOUSE OF MINSK!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Classic Animated Film ...
From director Don Bluth (The Secret of NIMH) this beautiful animated film comes a "tail" like no other. This story is about a little mouse named Fievel taking a "once in a lifetime" journey to America from Russia to escape the cats. They think by going to America there are no cats and can have a better life for their families. Upon their travels poor little Fievel becomes seperated from his family while arriving in New York.
