5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest movie ever made
A movie demonstrates comic talent when it generates laughs during the first viewing. A movie demonstrates comic genius when you're laughing during the forty-first viewing. After watching it four times on TV and at least once a year since getting the tape in 1985, I am still holding my sides.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've gone "Cold Turkey" DVD-less long enough
A hidden gem from the early 70's, funnier by far than all the TV sitcoms and "comedy" films rleased week after week. My favorite scene among many fine ones is where town-drunk Tom Poston delivers a hiarious, whacked-out anatomy lesson describing how if he stops smoking it will inevitably lead to his head falling off. So the civic leaders convince him to leave town for a while, at least until they win their money. With all Norman Lear's Hollywood clout you'd think he'd have convinced Universal to release it on DVD by now. I think there's a big-enough niche market waiting for it to justify its release.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fond memories of this!
I'm shocked that this movie isn't more available.I was quite young when I saw it and didn't recognize most of the names that would be more familiar to me now, but I still found it to be bitingly funny satire, and there are scenes in it that I've never forgotten.Get rid of a few of the clunkers that keep getting reissued and make room for this little gem. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!
I watched MST3 awhile back ago when it was on Sci-Fi(witch now sucks most of the time)and I fell for it.My mom even agrues it's funny. One day at blockbuster I found this.I rented it,watched it and laughed.I would buy this movie and the series.If...
5-0 out of 5 stars I Was A Young MST3K Fan
I remember back in the early 1990s of a show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. My parents occasionally watched it...but I got hooked at age 9. Strangely enough, the jokes didn't totally whiz over my head and I was able to enjoy Joel (when he was there...mostly reruns), Mike (who I saw mostly), Servo, and Crow. Now I never got so see the movie in theaters (due to young age and I didn't even know there was a movie until I saw a commercial for the VHS!). Once it was on TV I watched, I laughed, I even recorded onto a VHS myself and viewed at leisure. Now, I'm 21 and am hoping to get the DVDs so I can enjoy like I used to (with more understanding to the jokes...and I see this price tag for USED copies of the movie on DVD. I understand it's out of print, but I think it's best to shop around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nanu, Nanu.
When I was younger, my parents would watch MST3000 a lot (back when it was still on Sci-Fi). I didn't understand the movie humor, but I liked looking at the goofy monsters and I thought the robots were pretty funny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Time.
Even though most high schools in the country have very little resemblance to the high school in TEACHERS, there is a savage inequality that exists in how our schools in the United States are funded. This realization didn't take place until the early 1980s and TEACHERS was made and released just as the debate over unequal education was starting to rage.
4-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD?!?!?!?!?!?!
They do not even show this movie on cable...I have been waiting patiently for this to come out. Especially since I and pretty my whole graduation class (Franklin Heights High School) is in this movie. The movie was filmed at the old Central High School in Columbus, Ohio. A casting call went out to all seniors, 17 years and older in the early fall of 1983. We went there four hours a day, three days a week, for about six weeks, it was awesome.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's closer to being a good film than a bad one . . .
Most of the other comments, pro and con, have their points.I agree with many of them, pro and con; it's a matter of degree in most cases. And that in turn is a matter of taste or opinion; "beauty in the eye of the beholder" and so on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to note...
It's symptomatic of middle-age, I suppose, to reflect warmly on "the good old days", and even though I never wanted to fall into that syndrome, seeing "Help" has done exactly that for me. I was a Freshman in college when the movie was released, and so it was a movie for the millions of Boomers like me, in that bizarre, wonderful time that was the mid-1960's in America.
5-0 out of 5 stars YAY!! :D
This was the best movie that the beatles did it was funny and had a bit more of a plot this time. 'in the weeks that followed five more attemts were made to steal the ring.' Quite frankly my favorite attemt was number four he,he. But in 'another girl' we can only wish that Paul would wear that tshirt more often. and my stepsister finally realized that there are more rasons to like the beatles than their music. That is before John turned into mountain man\amish terrorist anyway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Please restore "Help!" for DVD
Though not the landmark that "A Hard Day's Night" was, this film is still a lot of fun, and for current and future generations shows how the Beatles looked and behaved in 1965, in full color (in fact, the color cinematography is striking throughout--should have been nominated for an Oscar).

Editorial Review

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie Set In the 50s Since Grease!
"Cry Baby" is the coolest movie since Grease that deals with this time period. The songs are good and the actors in the film are really excellent. I'm a fan of Johnny Depp, and he came through in this movie and him in a lead role set in the 50s worked! This movie is not only a movie that takes place in the 50s, but it feels like a movie that was made in that decade as well. Everything that was big in the movies during that time are seen and used in here. I really enjoyed how this film also dealt with issues people had then and the way people acted and thought.
4-0 out of 5 stars Campy...cute
Sort of like Grease/Outsiders gone crazy.Good movie and performances.I had no idea Johnny Depp could sing.I enjoyed the "jail house rock" spoof, and the music is great. Not a GREAT movie though, couldn't touch Grease or American Graffiti. But it IS worth watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waters Gets Wet With Cry Baby
John Waters who likes to be called the "Pope of Trash" has done a lot of films that are outrageous in style such as "Cecil B. Demented," "Pecker," & "Hairspray." "Cry Baby" is a 1990 musical that is utterly silly and frothy, but works nevertheless. Johnny Depp, now a big box office draw and critical success with Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" & "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," can be proud of the rockabilly Elvis-type singer he plays named Wade "Cry Baby" Walker. Depp performs his "Jailhouse Rock" type number with great energy and rebellion. Having him run through sewage pipes in his underwear is enough to set many a teenage girl's hearts aflutter. The female lead is Allison played by Amy Locane who worked in other films like "Airhead," "The Mummy" & "Bongwater." She does a good Olivia Newton John-like "Grease" character of the square girl who has a crush on Depp's bad boy. Stephen E. Miller who was recently seen in "RV" with Robin Williams and previously in "The Accused" with Jody Foster does a good job as the square boyfriend Baldwin who loses his girl to Cry Baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood wishes he could make a film like this today....
Despite the fact that this film is over 70 years old, it is still absolutely hilarious, and one of the greatest comedies ever made. Its pointed satire on war, idiotic government, and idiotic people is still potent, and probably always will be.It is only 70 minutes long, but it has more laughs than 10 modern comedies combined. There are no gross out gags, no idiotic sex jokes, no swearing, no illiterate, oversexed teenagers, just brilliant comedy.Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and even Zeppo rule!
5-0 out of 5 stars Dialog Highlights This Marx Bros. Gem
Well, here we are with another wild and hilarious Marx Brothers farce, this time with Groucho taking over a small country and winding up in war with a neighboring one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Undiluted Marxian Madness
If you prefer the Marx Brothers without sappy romantic leads and ponderous musical numbers, look no further than "Duck Soup" (1933). Director Leo McCarey dispenses with the extra baggage and focuses on nonstop anarchy in this classic political satire. Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo remain a formidable comic machine as they unleash a barrage of one-liners and sight gags -- highlighted by the immortal mirror scene. Members of Congress should be forced to sit through this cinematic masterpiece at least once a year. "Hail Freedonia!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Shrinking Woman
It would be amazing in reality if products can really do to a person what they did to Pat Kramer (aka Lily Tomlin) in this spoof of the feminine side to The Incredible Shrinking Man.Pat Kramer who is a well-known and well-loved citizen in a town where she always shops, where her neighbors love her and know everything about her, and her husband (Charles Grodin) who is into advertising and coming up with names for products, which Pat just happens to try at home, do something to her matabolism. The special effects that show her shrinking are quite awesome and amazing. The dolls and toys scene is hillarious! And the ape Sidney at an institute where Pat gets kidnapped because they want to do experiments on her blood as to why she's shrinking. What amazes me is when Pat was on the podium on her last shrinking phase telling everyone she's about to go, she swims in a pool of fabric softener and comes back???? As funny as it seems they leave you hanging at the end cause when her husband tries to put her wedding ring back on, it won't go and she GROWS and her shoes explode. One thing I will say is at the end the little jingle that they use for the glue product GALAXY GLUE it is an annoying and catchy won't get out of your head tune sung by an unknown named LINDA NOVEMBER but as I said if you have nothing else better to do, this movie is one to watch in the humorous stage. The ape to me seems to steal the show when he helps Pat escape from the institute.I hope that they RErelease this movie on DVD cause it is a cult classic if there ever was one.It stars Ned Beatty (Superman, Superman II, Deliverance, The Toy), Charles Grodin (Seems Like Old Times, Mupper Caper, The Woman In Red, Midnight Run, Beethoven), Lily Tomlin (playing three parts herself, her neighbor Judith, and the one she played on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In the snorty annoying operator which you'll only see once so don't miss it!) and a cameo appearance by Mike Douglass who had a talk show back in the mid 80's.Let's hope that this will come out on DVD....anyone else think so?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite childhood movies.....
I first saw this movie when I was 8 years old.I LOVED it then and still love it today as an adult.I am saddened that it has yet to be released on DVD.I still consider Lily Tomlin to be a comedic genius.I simply fall in love with every character she plays. This is a wonderful movie for both kids and adults alike. They don't make them the same anymore.I highly recommend this movie for anyone who is in the mood for good, wholesome entertainment.C'mon people! The movie is about a woman who accidently spills experimental perfume on herself and starts to shrink. So it seems as though everyone is trying to save her except a few bad apples who are trying to exploit her.She buddies up with a gorilla, and well, I can't give the ending away! There is a really cute song on the movie called "Galaxy Glue."Please release this on DVD soon!!!!!!

Hands down one of the funniest movies ever made.Add my voice to the long and growing list of those calling for this comedy masterpiece to be released on DVD.To the powers that be:We're waiting...!

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?
Add me to the long list of Andy Griffith fans who would love to see this on DVD.Considering all the terribly unfunny comedies that have been released on DVD over the years, why not release one that actually works?
5-0 out of 5 stars Certainly dated but very good fun just the same
Andy Griffith an underrated actor (as another poster says)? Griffith is a total legend in his own time! This movie has some hilarious moments with Griffith largely responsible for it all though Murray Hamilton, Nick Adams, and Myron Mccormick are all good support. The scene where the latrine is rigged so the toilets salute (!) was too riske for 1958 but they got it pass censors somehow (a mystery). Lastly, a splendid bit of thanks to the now late Don Knotts for his splendid cameo as the high strung enlisted man in this film. RIP Don! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Preston Sturges crew is aboard for social comentary,
satire & farce. John Sullivan is played by Joel McCrea, a light, very sucessful comedy director. In this movie about making a movie, Sullivan is determined to make a serious movie for which he is ill-equipted. He wants to explore poverty in America, get in touch with the poor, the down-trodden & the homeless accross the country. However, he has never experienced a day of need in his life. He has not & probably never will pay his dues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHARMED LIFE IS WHAT WE SEE HERE WITH PETER SELLERS LITERALLY ABLE TO WALK ON WATER!

5-0 out of 5 stars The allegorical gardener
I can see why some people don't like this movie. If the themes don't resonate with you, it's not really strong enough as a story; and, of course, if your comedic horizons end at 'Jackass', you'll find it awfully slow. Personally, I think it's a great movie and Peter Sellers should have won the Oscar for it- the Academy gave the award to Dustin Hoffman for one of his more pedestrian performances, presumably because he had been nominated and lost 3 times previously.
3-0 out of 5 stars Slow, but amiable
As with its title character (Chance the Gardener or "Chauncey Gardner" as he's mistakenly called), I found Being There amiable, but slow. The movie did evoke some chuckles from me, but I didn't find myself laughing that hard and it's pace was too slow for my tastes. Granted, it's not a joke-filled movie. The humor comes from the characters, not one-liners. The plot: a men with the mind of a child is left to his own devices after his rich but reclusive caretaker dies. After being accidentally hit by a car belonging to a wealthy woman, he is taken in and soon has access to the rich and famous. Everyone loves Chancey's innocent, simple, good cheer. They mistake his innocent words as great wisdom. The largest problem I had with it was the premise, which I found very hard to believe. Only one person in the movie is on to Chauncey from the beginning, but doesn't say anything so as to not rock the boat. But other events are hard to believe. First of all, would lawyers evict a man from a home even though he is clearly not competent to live on his own? Could a middle-aged man--retarded or not--never have been taken outside the place he lives? How could there be no paper trail detailing Chancey's existence? Could a "slow" person like Chauncey really get access to the president within a day of leaving his home? And would people really seriously consider him for becoming president himself? My answer to these questions is no. But the movie must stretch our disbelief for the sake of its plot and to make a social/political statement about people liking mindless optimism. Unfortunately, the movie says nothing new. It's a cynical belief that the people in power are dumber than those they lead and that politics is about choosing the most inoffensvie candidate possible. There's some truth in these views, but I believe the opposite. I think politicans are shrewd people who are forced to pander and oversimplify in order to get anything done. Some may see this movie as a great statement about how personality matters in politics. But Chauncey is the kind of guy who wouldn't last two seconds in the slice em and dice em world of American politics. ... Read more

Terrence McNally adapted his Broadway farce for this wild, headlong comedy set in one of the gay bathhouses that were once a staple of New York culture. Jack Weston plays a guy who makes the mistake of crossing his gangster brother-in-law. Fearing for his life, he hides in the gay baths and the door-slamming chaos begins. Directed by Richard Lester, the comedy is adept and well handled, with Weston watching his back while trying to pass as a regular customer. It's hard to tell which is funnier: Treat Williams as an undercover cop with a falsetto voice or Rita Moreno as the baths' supremely untalented--and even more supremely self-confident--singer, Googie Gomez. Her performances alone make this movie worth watching. Read more

This and the original M.A.S.H film had me rolling on the floor with laughter. It has a lot in common with classic theater farces (Goldsmith, Wilde, et al.) but takes the genre right over the top.How Rita Moreno didn't win another Oscar for this one, I don't know.Everyone I've shown it to--the girl friend, Mom, the neighbors--loved it.Not a mean-spirited moment in the whole show. 1-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
For any of you teachers out there who plan to watch this in your classroom with your students:BEWARE!!First of all, I've heard of taking "liberties" with a book but this is ridiculous! Sex between Farmer Jones and the neighbor farmer's wife is not in the book, but sure is shown in the movie.I was shocked to see them rolling under the sheet as the headboard was "knocking against the wall". Utterly revolting and embarassing for me and my students.I expect better from Hallmark Entertainment, Family Home Entertainment, etc...
3-0 out of 5 stars not that bad
I have read a number of reviews that are upset that the ending was too optimistic. But there is a reason for that. Remember that Animal Farm was at least partially based on the Soviet Union, and when this movie was made (1999) the soviet union had fallen and it looked as if we had new hope for a democratic russia under the leadership of borris yeltsin. So to have a more optimistic ending (that George Orwell would have never in a million years written) is not that bad of an idea and it follows russian history. But after 7 years we see that things are not that optimistic. Borris Yeltsin had to leave office because his alcholism made him unfit to rule a country (disturbingly like Mr. Jones). Now a former member of the KGB is in charge of russia. Furthermore the entire world is now starting to enter a war that seems to be unwinnable with goals that are at best ambigious and may very well be unachievable. Hmmm all of this is starting to remind me another Orwell book, that could be made into a bad TNT adaptation.

4-0 out of 5 stars i don't get it
I don't understand. How is it that so many people thought 1984 the movie was a masterpiece and yet they didn't give this great film the time of day. This movie is as good as 1984 (the movie) was bad. This is a perfect example of what communism really is, a good idea that could only work in a perfect world because hay, people (and animals apparently) are corrupt. Theirs a reason they say absolute power corrupts absolutely. People are selfish, and this is why communism must always fail, because people don't like to share and like being forced to share even less.

1-0 out of 5 stars God Awful piece of junk. Avoid at all costs.
This was one of the worst bad crappy movies I've seen. Al Franken falls flat on his face in this one. I found none of the jokes funny and it was one of those squeeze a buck out of a character SNL movies. Franken is funny on SNL and Stuart actually made me laugh on the show but this movie was travesty of the first rate. Like I said there is good crappy movies which I watch like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Flash Gordon, the Monster Squad, and the like that are bad films but pieces of art that make you laugh and entertain you. This movie was not one of them. If you think I'm some right wing red neck out to get Franken your dead wrong I'm far from it although I do find this up tight new air america Franken annoying though. The point is not his politics but this stupid waste of Hollywood money on this garbage that isn't funny or entertaining at all. In fact half way through it my ex girl friend had to wake me up because my head was starting hurt her shoulder. Forget this movie if you want a good crappy movie watch "Killer Klowns from Outer Space." Trust me its the best thing to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The roadblocks of a stubborn and guilty bureaucracy."
Director Michael Verhoeven's film "The Nasty Girl" is the story of Sonja (Lena Stolze). Raised in the small Bavarian town of Pfilzing, she attends convent school. Apart from the odd flash of naughty behaviour, she's a good girl--tidy, quiet, and studious, so it comes as no surprise when she enters an essay competition and wins first place. With her model essay "Freedom in Europe" Sonja wins a holiday in France. Later, Sonja is encouraged to enter a second essay competition, and she selects the topic "My Hometown During the Third Reich."
5-0 out of 5 stars a brilliant comedy about the sad truth
A beautiful film, funny, whitty, but yet - sad. The heroine says that you have to know where you are cdoming from, so that you will also know where you are going.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hooray For All Nasty Girls
This film by Michael Verhoeven is about a Bavarian schoolgirls's (Sonya) quest to find out the truth behind her small village's history and involvement behind the Third Reich. The film gives a chilling depiction of how partriarchal institutions and powerful individuals in control will use any means to neutralize any seroius threats brought against them. Surprisingly enough, Nasty Girl is one of few films that depict a woman as being single-mindedly obsessed by the pursuit of the facts. This kind of discourse has always been reserved for males. Several times Sonya is almost diverted from her quest by the temptations society dangles in front of women to keep us in our places. Sonya even receives this kind of pressure from her own husband.Read more

"Everyone is going through changes - No one knows what's going on. -And everybody changes places-But the world still carries on." (Alan Price)
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE BEST
No synopsis can adequately describe this movie. On the surface
5-0 out of 5 stars ABrilliant Cosmic Allegory
I really love this movie, but only view it every few years, like a fine wine that is savored on special occasions. Every viewing evokes in me a sublime and bittersweet floodgate of angst and nostalgia that only someone who was young in the late 60s and early 70s could understand.
