5-0 out of 5 stars Love the film -- When will we get a region 1 DVD?
I have to disagree with several of the other reviewers -- you DON'T have to be British, or female, to love this film! The comedy is hilarious, warm, and touching; and, Pauline Collins' performance is a true work of art.
5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE GIVE US SHIRLEY ON DVD IN THE US!!!
I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. Shirley must touch a nerve with women both young & old. After I saw this movie, I wanted to go to Greece! Her reactions to the situations around her reflect the many times you want to say something, but keep your mouth shut. I will be one of the first if this one comes out on DVD here.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE issue Shirley Valentine on DVD, won't you?
Millions of fans of this fabulous movie have waited impatiently for its issue on DVD for years. Why is it taking so long? What seems to be the problem? This movie is absolutely, without question, the most charming, heartwarming, fascinatiing, inspiring, humorous and inspirational movies of all time.Issuing it on DVD would be just a thrilling andmost satisying event in many, many years.Won't you PLEASE satisfy the pleas of devotees of this wonderful movie and issue it ASAP on Windescreen Stereo DVD?You won't be disappointed in the overwhelming response you get.Thank you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars golf life as it used to be
As a former tour player now out of the game, this film captures alot of what the PGA tour used to be.The race to "Monday Qualifiers" by what we were referred to as "rabbits" was filled with alot of the shenanigans this movie portrays. I'm sure the PGA wasn't especially thrilled with the movie, but this system produced greats like Trevino, Rodriguez, and many more.Would love to see this movie out in DVD (haven't owned a VCR in years)soon! As per other reviews, B movie with great content and storyline. Would by 10 DVD's for gifts for my golfing buddies!

4-0 out of 5 stars A rememberable movie
Excellent Golf Movie, RANDY QUAID at his best.Perhaps the best since & quot. THE Last Detail & quot. The TIN CUP OF THE 80'S.

5-0 out of 5 stars "You always were a silly old romantic, Spec."
I wrote HBO pictures a few years ago begging for a DVD release, and still we're forced to wait, and wait, and wait.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Sleeper
Crossing Delancey tells the story of two people from different socio-economic backgrounds who meet and stumble to try to form a relationship.Izzy is a young professional who meets Sam through her Jewish grandmother's matchmaker. When Izzy learns that her "match" sells pickles she's quick to try and hide her date from her friends. She's also quick to judge.Meanwhile, Sam has wholeheartedly fallen for Izzy, oblivious to the fact that she's a little embarrassed about his job.Can she overcome her preconceived notions about the man?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top ten favorites
Crossing Delancey is one of the most intelligent, sweet, REAL love stories ever. Made a Peter Riegert fan of me... he makes all the "pretty boy" protagonists look shallow and plastic.I have given away two copies of the VHS version, and am rapidly wearing out the third.I can see a definite need for a DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Release DVD
This movie has You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle beat, without a doubt. (While You've Got Mail was fine, Sleepless in Seattle was rather contrived, with wall-to-wall romantic music, which for me made it not at all appealing, as much as I like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Release Angus on DVD
C'mon when are these people going to wise up and release this fantastic movie on DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Angus: A great movie! Needs a DVD release!
"Angus" is a movie about a shy 14 year old who doesn't fit in. He is humiliated and picked on by others at school, and spends most of his time hanging out with his friend, another outsider named Troy, and his grandfather, and dreaming of being with the school's hottest cheerleader, Melissa Lefevre. One day, his dreams come true, somewhat, when he is chosen to dance with Melissa at the Winter Ball. However, the set up was planned by Melissa's boyfriend, and Angus' arch nemesis, Rick Sanford. Angus decides to finally stand up to Rick, and lets him know that he prefers to be different.

ok, so yeah. This movie is like.... awesome! I was in florida on vacation when my mother first saw it and she told me on the phone that I had to see it because all she thought while watching the movie was that it was my life. honestly, anyone who has ever been the pet whipping boy of their school should see this movie. hell, anyone wh ever bullied someone because they were different should see it, they may learn a lesson from it. from the beginning it grabs your attention and holds it all the way through the end. I really wish they would hurry up with the dvd release of it. the soundtrack is phenominal. I still get funny looks when people are looking through my cd case and find the CD with a blowup doll on it. lol. one song that I l;oved in the film, however is not one the soundtrack. for any of you looking for this song it's by peter gabriel and it's called the washing of the water. but aside from the soundtrack. 5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic comedy at its best!
This charming and enjoyable movie with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is a must see.Julia, with her trademark charm and smile, is adorable in this film and Hugh Grant as the ackward but handsome bachelor, fall in love in Notting Hill. But before they do, a lot of amusing things happen to them. The cast is wonderful and absolutely funny. Not since "Four Weddings and a Funeral" have I seen such a great assemble cast and team.I wish Hugh Grant would make more movies like this again. In short, I highly recommend it to those who enjoy romantic comedies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and cute but it works....
What happens when a Beverly Hills movie star walks into the quiet life of a Notting Hill bookseller? Sparks fly and it's one of those romantic comedies whereby you want to see them get passed the masks that are standing in the way. Vintage Roberts and Grant... and a surprise sweet British movie on the crazy ways people fall in and out and in and out of love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the bonus material

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie wheres the DVD?
Love the movie But where is the DVD?It is a very very good classic move that I really enjoyed alot.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Has Re-do All Over It.
This mid-50's melodrama probably inspired a lot of arbitrage specialists out there, if not, Hugh Hefners. If you liked the "Hotel" series by Arthur Hailey, read the book before enjoying Hollywood's botching of a fine story.(heard Travolta was interested in the project)The business intrigue was stripped lean to accomodate an all=star cast. Natalie Wood, at her lovely, though wooden best dwarfed by James Garner.Add Nina Foch, Ed Platt,Dean Jagger and E.G. Marshall and things stir up a bit. Garner and Wood do create sparks after much nonsense. We all forgive them, if we can just see a rags-to-riches story with its Shang-Ri-La settings and a converted B-26 with built-in bar. Pretty Rich Man meets Pretty Woman. Fascinates even today.

5-0 out of 5 stars This classic should be reissued in DVD!
This film, currently only available in VHS, has become a classic on which other classics are based! As has been pointed out by others, the plot of "Pretty Woman" (ASIN 6305696071) borrows heavily from this earlier film.Natalie Wood shines as much in her role in this film as the poor little rich girl as Julia Roberts does in hers in the other as the lady of the evening with the heart of gold. Both convince the heroes (played respectively by James Garner and Richard Gere) that its better to build up the companies they buy than to tare them apart. Thus both are an affirmation of what can be best about capitalism. ... Editorial Review

Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY is this film NOT on DVD!!!???
I'm very pleased to see a flurry of 'new'/er reviews of this film.I only hope the DVD gods take notice!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A film no fan of comedy should miss
This touching, sly, hilarious comedy with understated performances should be on DVD. Walter Matthau's transformation from a vain, self-absorbed product of inherited wealth into a caring human being is brilliantly written and played. Elaine May's klutzy, endearing, naive Henrietta is one of the loveliest of screen portrayals. This film is a true classic, under-seen and under-appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exemplary undertaking
My predecessors in reviewing this movie have done a great job of detailing it's highlights... I cannot advance their descriptions and their accolades any farther than they have done.I will, however, add that this is one of those movies that when you see it on cable at 3 am, you will not be able to turn it off. After you watched it and failed to find the title you will canvas your friends to try to find out the name of the movie... when noone knows what you're talking about, go to your secretary who will google the actor and the story line and come up with the name of the movie and you try to find the dvd and it won't exist...then you vainly try to find the title anywhere and it comes up on vhs. BUY IT because if you don't you will certainly wish you had. I have a brand new vhs player sitting in my attic in the box so that in the future, when the vhs player is no longer available and the studio wonks refuse to put classics on dvd, I will still be able to play these movies like "New Leaf" that aren't on DVD. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Should have been a clunker but turned out a gem
I think this is one of Goldie Hawn's/Kurt Russell's best performances. You really notice how thin/contrived the plot is but you put up with that just to see these characters. Also, Roddy McDowell, her mom, the doctor, the kids, bad Billy, and the coast guard guy (lewis??).Not to mention the workers at the sanitariam, trying to get rid of her, high fiving when someone finally comes to claim her.
4-0 out of 5 stars A golden Goldie treat!
No matter how many times I watch this movie (and believe me, I've watched it many, many, many times) it's always enjoyable. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, an incrediblly rich, incredibly bored and incredibly bitchy woman with nothing left to do while her yacht is docked at a small coastal Oregon town called Elk's Cove but to hire a carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell, gotta love him) to remodel her closet. But when the job isn't done to her satisfaction, he winds up overboard along with all his tools. He vows to get revenge on her and the opportunity presents itself when Joanne falls overboard in the middle of the night and is later discovered by a crew of Portuguese men on a garbage barge. But Joanna has amnesia and can't remember who she is. And her husband Grant is all to happy to pretend he doesn't know her and leave her in the hospital. But when Dean sees the "amnesia lady" on the news, he recognizes Joanna and hatches a plan to get revenge and get the money she owes him. But neither one expects to fall in love with the other. Overboard is a fun and funny movie that also teaches us the lesson that money doesn't buy us complete happiness. It can for you though if you buy Overboard because it's worth watching hundreds of times over. I love it! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny!!!
It's a zany mix-up in this dazzling comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This is a riches-to-rags story for anyone who loves practical jokes. Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered and self-centered wife of a presumptous yacht owner. With theirboat stuck in port for repairs, Joanna hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell)to redo her closet space. But after the job is complete and Dean asks to be paid, Joanna flat out refuses to him. When Joanna falls overboard and gets a case of amnesia, Dean jumps on the opportunity for a little payback. He tell Joanna that she is his wife and the mother of four wild and unruly boys! So check out this hilarious movie, and be prepared to laugh all the way through it! ... Read more

All the reviews here, correctly, state what a terrific movie this is. But for me...just having turned 60...I confirm the absolute veracity of an early line of the movie, a voice-over by the great William Powell: "Ah, fifty. The old age of youth, and the youth of old age.."That, my friends, is the truth. Now, however, I am one lucky boomer to be able to confirm also that "sixty is the new forty." So, there it is. Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food.Read more

    yes, waaaay too expensive
4-0 out of 5 stars "She Came Home and Vibrated for an Hour!"
The above is the only risque line you will hear in this classic family comedy starring the one and only Don Knotts.I just watched this movie for the first time in over 30 years and this movie brought back so many memories. If you were born between 1955 and 1965, this film was probably a big part of your childhood.I was a little too young to see it when it released to theaters, but it played on local television at least once a year in the late 1960's andearly 1970's. It doesn't have much of a reputation in "film" circles but for kids of that era it's one of the period's essential films.
5-0 out of 5 stars KNOTT'S BEST FILM!
The Ghost & Mr. Chicken has always been my favorite Don Knotts movie and probably my favorite role of the recently passed comedian. The film was made in 1966, just one year after he had left the Andy Griffith Show. The film not only works as a wonderful comedy but also an effective horror. This used to scare the heck out of me when I watched it as a kid.Knotts plays his usual, nervous twitchy self, this time as Luther Heggs a copywriter for a small-town newspaper who dreams of becoming a reporter. He gets his chance by getting to spend the night in the old, reputedly haunted, Simmons house where Mrs. Simmons was murdered and Mr. Simmons committed suicide 20 years earlier. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great News!
While Paramount Home Video has successfully marketed DVD packages of I Love Lucy, Warner Bros. Home Video is now getting into the act with a package that includes the only two feature films Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz starred in together, The Long, Long Trailer in 1954 and Forever, Darling, in 1955. A third movie, Too Many Girls, produced in 1940, stars Ball in the leading role and Arnaz in a bit part. The two reportedly met on the set of the film, fell in love, and married a few weeks afterwards

5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE put this hilarious classic on DVD!!
What a fantastic pairing of the classic Luci & Desi comedy team, even while "I Love Lucy" was still airing before live audiences. An initial fun point was the change of 'Lucy & Ricky' to 'Taci & Nicky'. Both my parents and I saw this aired on TV, and laughed so hard we were repeatedly wiping our tears as Taci fell out the tilted trailer into the mud, was tossed with the salad while Nicky serenely drove the pitching trailer, & "hold-your-breath" CLIFF-hanging suspense as the trailer was just inches from the precarious edge!

Remember darlings, "Life's a banquet, and most suckers are starving to death." That tag line sums up this exuberant and immensely amusing 1958 comedy that can be seen repeatedly, as it never grows stale. Rosalind Russell plays the flamboyant aunt who takes in poor, orphaned Patrick, played with sophisticated ease by Jan Handzlik. Mame, all glitter and martinis, raises her nephew in a world filled with acceptance and her oddball literati friends. Nothing is too bohemian. This unfolds in colorful episodic segments that allow us to watch Patrick grow as Mame oversees his unusual upbringing while she juggles a few spouses and an extended household. Russell, who created the title role for the stage, simply shines. She is bright and brassy, but never goes too far over the top. Peggy Cass is a comedic delight as her befuddled secretary, and Coral Browne brings class to the production as her best friend. This was based on the exuberant stage play, which in turn was based on Patrick Dennis's humorous, bittersweet novel. The screen version was written by the clever duo of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Not to be confused with the pathetically lackluster musical version starring Lucille Ball (1974), simply entitled Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Mame for Me
I remember watching this movie as a child falling in love with Rosalind Russell from the very first time, in her role as Mame. Who doesn't want a slightly whacky, eccentric aunt? I love this version of Mame, and it's the only one I own. However, my mother prefers the Lucille Ball version, and when we decided to watch Mame together, she wants her way, and I want mine. Rosalind Russell is the only Mame as far as I am concerned, and she plays the role well. It was made for her, and for her it will always be. This is one of my favorite lines from the movie!

    Editorial Review

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie Set In the 50s Since Grease!
"Cry Baby" is the coolest movie since Grease that deals with this time period. The songs are good and the actors in the film are really excellent. I'm a fan of Johnny Depp, and he came through in this movie and him in a lead role set in the 50s worked! This movie is not only a movie that takes place in the 50s, but it feels like a movie that was made in that decade as well. Everything that was big in the movies during that time are seen and used in here. I really enjoyed how this film also dealt with issues people had then and the way people acted and thought.
    4-0 out of 5 stars Campy...cute
Sort of like Grease/Outsiders gone crazy.Good movie and performances.I had no idea Johnny Depp could sing.I enjoyed the "jail house rock" spoof, and the music is great. Not a GREAT movie though, couldn't touch Grease or American Graffiti. But it IS worth watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waters Gets Wet With Cry Baby
John Waters who likes to be called the "Pope of Trash" has done a lot of films that are outrageous in style such as "Cecil B. Demented," "Pecker," & "Hairspray." "Cry Baby" is a 1990 musical that is utterly silly and frothy, but works nevertheless. Johnny Depp, now a big box office draw and critical success with Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" & "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," can be proud of the rockabilly Elvis-type singer he plays named Wade "Cry Baby" Walker. Depp performs his "Jailhouse Rock" type number with great energy and rebellion. Having him run through sewage pipes in his underwear is enough to set many a teenage girl's hearts aflutter. The female lead is Allison played by Amy Locane who worked in other films like "Airhead," "The Mummy" & "Bongwater." She does a good Olivia Newton John-like "Grease" character of the square girl who has a crush on Depp's bad boy. Stephen E. Miller who was recently seen in "RV" with Robin Williams and previously in "The Accused" with Jody Foster does a good job as the square boyfriend Baldwin who loses his girl to Cry Baby.

No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Taking liberties with Capote's bittersweet story, director Blake Edwards and screenwriter George Axelrod turn New York into a city of lovers and create a poignant portrait of Holly, a frustrated romantic with a secret past and a hidden vulnerability. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. The only sour note in the whole film is Mickey Rooney's demeaning performance as the apartment's Japanese manager, an offensively overdone stereotype even in 1961. The rest of the film has weathered the decades well. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic. 5-0 out of 5 stars As Charming as A Classic Can get!
Breakfast at Tiffany's... If you haven't seen it, then you must have heard of it in some way. You have heard the title somewhere, you read about it at someplace or maybe you have heard the famous musical theme by Henry Mancini? Yes, it's hard not to have heard of this classic masterpiece in some sort of way.
5-0 out of 5 stars delicious
Blake Edward's masterpiece isbright, funny, intelligent, and thoroughly winning, thanks to his deft direction and the singular presence of its stars.Stunningly gowned by Givenchy, Audrey Hepburn makes the part of Holly Golightly completely her own, and is so captivating, one couldn't care less how greatly the film differs from Truman Capote's much darker novella.George Peppard is her praiseworthy partner in his most memorable role.To better complement his spirited co-star, he plays Paul Varjak quietly, radiating a natural humor, pride, warmth, and grace. With astonishing blue eyes, perfect hair, cardigans, tweed jackets, and penny loafers, Paul is achingly handsome and infinitely desirable.
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly beautiful, sad film
The sight of Audrey Hepburn, dressed immaculately in a black dress, wearing large black goggles, holding a danish pastry in one of her hands and a coffee in the other, looking wishfully, enchantedly into the window of Tiffany, joins forces with the extremely beautiful yet melancholy background score by Henri Mancini to set the tone of the movie. Quirky, witty, modern, fashionable, yet flowing over an undercurrent of unexplainable sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars All these years later, still a fabulous film
Julia Roberts and Richard Gere magnetize the entire film and pull you into a fantasy land where dreams do come true.I understand the naysayers, but this film is not about Julia Roberts being a hooker.Obviously, some people find that horribly offensive. This movie is about love, gaining self-respect and believing in yourself (Kit . . . "take care of YOU").It's a feel good film about pursuing your dreams.Obviously, if some 14 year old decides she wants to be a hooker when she grows up so she can meet her prince charming, she needs some serious guidance.Yet I highly doubt even most 14 year old's are that stupidly literal about a film such as this.I'm 50 years old and, you know what?A LOT of my dreams HAVE come true in ways I never would have expected, including romatically. So there;0).

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie about Being a Whore
This is the worst movie I have seen in many, many years.I only gave it one star because there isn't a rating for negative stars. Does anyone who likes this movie not realize that its about a prostitute? A hooker?Julia Roberts can't act first of all.Secondly, the plot is so ridiculous. A rich successful businessman picks up a streetwalker for a night paid sex, and this is romantic? What a crock of crap!!! The most ridicuous, unbelievable scene in the whole movie is the scene where jason alexander's character makes a pass at Julia Robert's character.(Who, lets not forget, walks the street to have sex with whichever person will pay her money). During this scene, the hooker character actually acts like her dignity and virtue has been assaulted. She's a HOOKER!!! What the hell is wrong with you people???!!!
3-0 out of 5 stars The extras are 'pretty', but parts of the character development are unrealistic
The studio took a lot of time with anniversary extras for this self-described modern day 'Cinderella' film. I'm impressed with the number and quality of extras which are included inside this one release.Even with all of the technology we now have, very few movies get such extensive anniversary releases.

OK...so I've been in love with James Garner since I was five years old (Maverick days). And yes, I love older men. This movie is an absolute favorite of mine. The chemistry between James Garner and Sally Field is terrific and it winds up being an old-fashioned romance. It doesn't get any better than this. ... This is one of my favorite movies.I've watched it too many times to count.Alan Arkin and Ellen Burstyn ate excellent and would recommend this movie highly except I would have preferred that the few curse words not be in it.

Isn't it a shame that others have to compare their own failures and impose them on a film?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all time great romantic comedies
As romantic comedies go,"The April Fools" is one of the undiscovered treasures of the 1960s, comparable to the vanguard of all New York romantic comedies "Breakfast At Tiffany's". This film is far more simplistic (too simplistic it seems for many reviewers in 1969) and perhaps because of this it will strike more of a chord with today's audiences weary of recent ponderous comedies.
5-0 out of 5 stars My All Time Favorite Movie
I was working in a movie theater when "The April Fools" first came out. Once the customers were seated,I had a choice of watching either this movie or the then mega hit The Graduate. I saw The Graduate just once.I watched The April Fools over 50 times.I've watched it every time it showed on TV over the past 35 years.I own it,and I'll buy the DVD when I find it.And I'll continue to watch it.5-0 out of 5 stars A light & lovely film, but also with some hidden depths
Yes, a sweet & fluffy romantic comedy ... but one which can reveal new dimensions for those who look for them.
