Delmer Daves's movie about ex–army scout Tom Jeffords's one-man peace mission to the Apaches, and the diplomatic partnership he formed with Cochise, has a child's-storybook clarity to it. That applies to not only its lovely Technicolor compositions but also its scenario, characterizations, and still-arresting mix of violence and delicacy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie with a Message for Today
Wonderful stars - James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and a very beautiful Debra Paget - in one of the very best westerns that have ever been made with a true regard and understanding of the plite of the native American Indians. Not the first, in fact far from it, Tim McCoy's 1932's "End of the Trail" made a very bold attempt to depict the native American as being very human and very much wronged by the white man. That aside, this movie has a great deal more to recommend it; the superb techicolor, the sensitive direction (Delmer Daves)with the perfect mix of drama, action and suspence. Highly recommended to all serious collectors of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encounter between two worlds.
I've seen Broken Arrow when I was just a kid. The power of the images of this film remained in the back of my mind. In the near past a collection of the best Far West movies was edited in Argentina. This was the first title I run to buy. I wasn't disappointed with what I found.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disneyfied sequel, passable but not great
The original movie is one of my all time favorites. A classic in its own right. The sequel is a passable piece, but lacks the greatness of the original. Some of the plot details are implausible. I can't see that many lower class people following a rich brat in a horse stealing scheme, when that (in those days) was a death penalty crime. A wild horse is not going to go tame for one important ride as if he understands everything. The overall plot was "Disneyfied" which was a detraction from the original characters. Also some details from the first movie were forgotten, such as the fact that Jim Craig owned his father's half share in the mine. However, it was nice to have a wrap up of the characters we knew and loved in the original. Brian Dennehy does a good job in his role as Harrison, but is so different from Kirk Douglass that it was challenging to accept. Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton were wonderful in their roles, and its too bad they didn't get more movie roles to show thier stuff in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh PLEASE People--a Little Critical Thinking Here
Can anyone possibly think that if a horse was in fact killed in the making of this film, that ANY studio--much less DISNEY--would be stupid enough to release actual footage of its death?! In this, the era of CGI?! Does this mean that the dog playing Old Yeller was actually shot, too? Can you say "cover-up?" How about "lighten up," followed by "wise up?" This isn't Tarkovsky!
3-0 out of 5 stars C'mon Disney, Release Movies in their Original Aspect Ratios!
BUYER BEWARE!This movie was originally in widescreen but is not released in anamorphic as the first one was/is - what's the deal, Disney?I guess people with tiny tv's want full screen so they can actually see the image, perhaps?Widescreen versions should at least be made available in tandem so that those people of discerning taste in cinematic entertainment can truly enjoy the film. Some Disney movies only ever existed in full screen aspect ratio, but there were many made for the big screen that have only been released in full screen transfers to date.Boycott them and make Disney see the error of its ways!(the three star rating is for the average between 5 stars for the film and 1 star for the dvd release) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever......
I watched this back in the 70's as a child and hadn't realized until watching it again recently that it had influenced some of the things I say today.. "you look like one of those funny boys". Absolutely love this movie, and anyone who doesn't needs to have their diaper stuffed w/ cactus....

5-0 out of 5 stars Evil Roy Slade
I saw this movie many moons ago.I consider it to be the greatest film since The Ten Commandments.I've wanted a copy for years.John Astin is brilliant in this fine true-life story of a lad in the old west who was raised by wild animals after his wagon train was ambushed. Even the animals shine in this production.Evil Roy Slade would make the ASPCA proud.
2-0 out of 5 stars Stupid and very dated.
I remember thinking this thing was funny when it was released but after searching the planet for a copy of the video I was very disappointed that none of the laughs I remembered survived the passing of 30 years time. What a bummer! Some memories are best left untampered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I couldn't be more pleased with this seller's service: fast delivery, & a quality product.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Western the way it should be
This is a well done, made-for-TV Western based on the Louis L'Amour novel of the same name. There is so much to like in this movie. This is not some grand epic like `Dances with Wolves', the scale and scope of the action are small, and the plot straightforward. The casting and acting are great.Sam Elliot was put on this Earth to play the role of L'Amour's quiet loners. He has such a great voice and presence.Katherine Ross, his love interest in this movie and his wife in real life, is also outstanding.Conagher has some great lines in this movie, as other reviews have alluded to.Ken Curtis (Festus!) also has an important role in this movie.Any Western with Festus can't be bad.The cinematography is terrific.Beautiful shots of the wilderness, the badlands, and the open sky. This movie is also full of atmosphere.Without trying to describe what atmosphere is in a Western, the best Westerns (such as John Wayne's Rio Bravo, and including this film) have it.There is also a certain gritty realism to this movie that is lacking in many Westerns made in the past twenty years. The characters get dirty and tired. One small point about this film that I really found compelling was that the shots and lever actions of the Winchesters sound as they really do.Most gunshots in movies don't sound like real gunshots. This is a small but important detail for realism, and it really adds to the experience of being part of the action, not just a distant observer. The only reason that I don't give this movie five stars is that the editing and transition between scenes are horrible.Perhaps this is an artifact of TV (commercial breaks) or perhaps it indicates that there were more scenes initially shot that were cut from the finished film, I don't know.Scenes just abruptly end, and there are discontinuous, seemingly random jumps, in time and space in the film.It makes the final product somewhat choppy in my opinion. This is a great (and underappreciated) Western in any case, and a worthy addition to any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie - caution to parents
I really think this is a great movie, Very little swearing, some fist-fights and gunslinging. Clean enough for my 8 and 11 year old boys to watch. However, be careful parents, because on the DVD, the preview to other movies contains frontal nudity.(accessible through the main menu)You might want to store it out of their reach.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for trying so hard
I have returned to this mini-series after over a decade. I bought Lonesome Dove on DVD a while back and enjoyed it more than I did on my initial viewing. I was not as fond of "Return" when it first aired for a few reasons: The absence of Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrae, Tommy Lee Jones not returning, and a somewhat retreaded narrative. After watching "Return" again, these elements are still problematic but the movie tries so hard to re-capture the spirit of Lonesome Dove that it does manage to succeed on its own merit. One does wonder if, instead of replacing the missing cast members with new actors (or new characters in the case of William Petersen's McCrae like character for example) it had focused on what it did have, namely Rick Schroeder and the Hat Creek Outfit. There are some early appearances of some soon to be famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Dennis Haysbert. I might have liked this better if it had just been its own film instead of an over-reaching sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dove Sequel Review
Although not actually based on a McMurtry tale, this cracking good story continues the saga of the Lonesome Dove crew is a very entertaining style. For purists, it will be something of a dissappointment. For anyone who likes a good story, it is great. Some actors play the same roles as in the original "Dove", but some are new to their roles but do an amazing job, and even have an amazing resemblence, so that one soon no longer focuses on the difference (Capt Call, for example). A good story in its own right; six hours of fine entertainment. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Western - classic Duke
Simply put - Honda is a classic Western movie that any Duke fan should watch. John Wayne puts in a great performance as the outcast Hondo who stumbles upon trouble between the settlers, US Army, and Apaches. Not a stranger to troubld Hondo manages to stay alive and protect others in this rather dangerous situation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good story line for hondo-John Wayne
Movie had a good story line.I like john waynes older roll movies.Good acting. And a tear jerker as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Balance for its time
John Wayne stars as Hondo Lane, a half-Indian message carrier and gunslinger in New Mexico. He first shows up at the ranch of Mrs. Angie Lowe after getting away from Apache attackers. This takes place in the ending days of the "Indian round-up" years, when only a few bands of Apache were left. Hondo takes a liking to Angie and her young son, but soon heads out to deliver the message.

Editorial Review

The dew of new stardom was still visible on Marilyn Monroe when she ventured up to Canada to shoot this sturdily entertaining CinemaScope Western. Although director Otto Preminger later claimed little interest in the picture, he couldn't help but bring his even-handed visual style to the widescreen process. The location shooting (in Alberta) is eye filling, and that river really does look alarming. Best of all, Marilyn, fresh and vital, had a costar to match her magnetism but not humor her sometimes-scattered approach to acting: Robert Mitchum, as a homesteader with a dark past. He's weighty enough to stand next to MM's bright flame without giving any ground; they should have worked together again. Since Marilyn plays a saloon singer, she gets to sling some tunes in her inimitable style, with as much glamour as the gold rush-era trappings will allow, giving "I'm Going to File My Claim" various meanings. Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe are abandoned by a bad guy (Rory Calhoun) who steals Mitchum's horse, forcing them to travel down a raging river (along with Mitchum's son) on a raft. The three refugees, all of them living troubled lives to begin with, have to face the rapids together, and director Otto Preminger's allegory for individual salvation through unity becomes a stirring family drama. This 1954 film features Monroe at her golden peak, though not quite at the apex of her sexual iconography. The result is that she gets to play a character whose beauty is not really part of the story line, a character many other actresses might have played. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crossfire Trail
I bought this dvd because it starred Tom Selleck and was directed by Simon Wincer. It lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed the "all man and a yard wide" portrayal of the men and the countryside in this film. It helps that it ends the way we would expect. When life was simple and uncomplicated and people lived up to their word in deed and action. I would buy anything with Tom Selleck and directed by Simon Wincer as long as it was an old western setting.

4-0 out of 5 stars the real west
It is movie about the strength of friendship and how three men carry out a promise to a dying friend. How men will fight to the end for a dream of one man.The characters drew strength from one another. It tells about the hardships of the old west. The unfortunate greed of men and how greed can kill.Tom Selleck's character showed the the ability to love a woman and his love of his friends. The other characters complimented each other. The movie was well worth the price. You will want more of the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reminds you of a Duke Western
This reminded me of something that John Wayne might have done. Here Tom Selleck does a fine job playing a drifter that makes a promise a dying friend to defend his wife and her land. When he arrives he finds the ranch to be neglected and everyone hasn't seen the owner in a year. Perhaps foolsih but he enlists the aid of two of his friends and a former ranch hand, played by Wilford Brimley, and they make a go of putting the ranch back in shape after a year of neglect. Mark Harmon plays the concerned man that is wooing the widow, but seems to have ulterior motives. This has good acting, sets, scenery, and music. Well worth owning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the spoiler
wayne and scott how can you go wrong good movie im a big fan of both

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest westerns ever made!
I have this movie and love seeing it. It is one that you will want to watch time and time again. The script is cleverly written, such as the line that John Wayne says to Marlene Dietrich: "Baby, you'd look better in a burlap bag". The music is conducted by Elmer Bernstein and helps to capture the drama in this movie. John Wayne's way of getting his words across to the actresses in the film is his trademark, his high pitched voice, the nod of his head and his smile. The brawl between John Wayne and Randolph Scott is a real classic of movie making. So much could be said, but if you love old western classics you will really enjoy this one. They don't make them like this anymore. This movie should be rated a 10.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to get Spoiled Over In This Great Looking DVD!
"The Spoilers" is an unabashed adventure flick brimming with romance, humor and spectacular action. The plot, such as it is, is simple but compelling. When government agents arrive in Alaska and 'steal' a gold miner's claim, the miners decide to retaliate. John Wayne is a miner who's claim has been stolen by the local magestrate, played by Randolph Scott. Both Scott and John Wayne cut dashing figures of masculinity across the stark but beautiful Alaskan backdrops. Marlene Dietrich - as the lusty, husky-voiced madam, is at her most provocative, sensual best. The climactic fistfight, between Wayne and Scott is defiantly brutal to say the least.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My most favorite movie
everything about this movie is touching and appealing with a real authentic feel.I love the way the characters interact without lots of words - just very good acting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zandy's dandy
I wait patiently for the day they release this movie and "The Grey Fox" onto Dvd so I can get pristine copies to treasure. This film is not a shoot-em-up traditional western; far from it. It is a beautifully crafted period movie with outstanding performances from all the cast. It portrays culture, and social and racial predjudices from a bygone era that existed in the Big Sur country. It is most defintely directed at adults but younger people that enjoy movies with content to make them think should get somwthing from it as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Quite Possibly the worst movie ever filmed! After suffering through this film on late night television one evening, this film has became the benchmark for all bad films in my family."It can't possibly be as bad as Zandy's Bride" is a common statement.I purchased this video as a gag gift for my sister in law, who hates it more than I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful film, terrible score
Charleton Heston has gone on record as naming Will Penny his favorite of all of his films and it is easy to see why. The story has depth and heart, the actors all put in wonderful performances and the film looks magnificent, which is something that cannot be said for many films of it's era. Unfortunately, there is one huge, glaring flaw in an otherwise faultless movie: The score. The music is jarringly out of place and does not convey a sense of the old west at all. If only the original score could be dumped and new score added by a talent on the order of, say, Elmer Bernstein or Jerry Goldsmith, this would be a true 5-star film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Notyour two-bit yarn
A considered favorite of Charlton Heston's, an overlooked gem of a sod-buster tale for the hardcore faithful. From start to finish, this is a study of character put to the test at the turn of the century. One of the finest ensemble western casts put together: Donald Pleasance, Anthony Zerbe, Bruce Dern, Lee Majors, the ever-appealing Joan Hackett and Ben Johnson just for starts. Charlton generously shares the story with these veterans as he plays an inveterate cowpoke, illiterate, yet sensitive enough to care about life and defense of the vulnerable with a wonderful Christmas scene that tugs for the hanky. Violent, sensitive and memorable no matter how long on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Western with Real Old School Actors
This western doesn't future stereo typical gunslingers, bad ass villans, nor typical dramatic Hollywood gunfights. This is film filled with heart, and great characters by bounch of great old school actors! It portrates old west very hornest, realistic, and truthfully. It gives you different sense and perspectives how it is like to be in old west that you won't get to see from reguler western films.Charlton Heston was great playing aging cowboy, Lee Majors made very humble debut as Heston's sidekick. (It gets me wonder if he didn't commit to the Six Million Dollar man, and focused on film carrer, what would it be happened. After all he was the first pick for Midnight Cowboy over Jon Voight) this movie also featuring Donald Pleaseance, Bruce Dern, Ben Johnson, Slim Pikens, Clifton Roberts, Joan Hackette. ... If you are looking for a movie of the caliber of"Jeremiah Johnson", this is not it.Although this movie has all the makings of a good one, it never puts it all together. Given the restrictive social mores of the late 1800's and the incredible fortitude of the pioneer spirit, I find this movie extraordinary. Amy and Pearl, from opposite ends of the social spectrum and totally aware of their realities, stive to accomplish the same purpose. They have the needs and desires of any woman; security, home, family, and especially love. The plot is carried in the dialog--listen carefully. Some may say this is a "chick flick," and yes, I went through a few tissues, but the candid portral of two women who have no illusions left, is brilliantly played by Lea Thompson and Farrah Fawcett. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Western Ever
Lance was born to play this role. He was awesome. Good cast, good acting, good directing. Excellent movie. I have watched it 5 times so far. The guy that played Walt Shannon was also excellent as the menacing bad guy, creating almost unbearable suspense leading up to the gun fight. And the girl that played his daughter brought tears to my eyes every time as she realized he was her father. Incredible western, right up there with Shane.

5-0 out of 5 stars great perfornance by young actor but to short
the young actor at the begining of the movie who calls lance out and eventully gets shot because of his scummy brothers advice to fight and become the number one gunfighter, i thought this young actors performance stood out above the rest with exception of lance, the intensity in the gunfight was awsome had me on the edge of my seat.i thought this young man's performance was oustanding even with the short screen time. i would like to no more about this young actor. if any one has information on him could you contact me at dandycandy55@hotmail.com.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cross-dresser with attitude
Miss Phoebe Titus (Jean Arthur) is a cross-dresser with big ambitions. She wants nothing less than the greatest ranch in Arizona. To raise the money she goes into business, first selling pies to the riff-raff of Old Tucson, then competing for army freight contracts.Of course, her trail is not a smooth one, or there wouldn't be a movie, in this case an extravaganza directed by Wesley Ruggles (of CIMMARRON fame).Shot on location in the Tucson Basin, local color is provided by lots of cacti and a cast of thousands who wander pointlessly, but colorfully across scenes clad as Mexicans, Indians, cow pokes, or ladies of the night.5-0 out of 5 stars I like this film!
Jean Arthur is terrific in "Arizona" as a strong-willed woman who holds her own out west. She gets her man (Holden) without sacrificing her freedom and dreams.I suppose one should call the whole thing unconventional. After all, it's a western whose lead character and overriding focus is the heroine (who is also unconventional). So few westerns retain my interest because of the lack of interesting roles for women. Thelength of the film, a common complaint, didn't bother me, I felt the film showed the "complete world," of Arthur's character's life in Arizona while never becoming one of those overblown epics in which the characters get lost for all the action. All in all, I think this film deserves more respect and attention than it gets.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hellcat Jean Arthur wears a dress to catch William Holden
In the 1941 western "Arizona," Jean Arthur stars as Phoebe Titus, a frontier hellcat who has gotten the better of every man in Tuscon, circa 1860.Then William Holden shows up as Peter Muncie from Missouri, on his way to California.Phoebe is so smitten with the young lad that she actually takes to wearing dresses, but he wants to get to California.Just to make things worse, local bad guys Jefferson Carteret (Warren William) and Lazarus Ward (Porter Hall) are after her business, stealing her money and having Indians attack her wagon trains.Fortunately, in the best scene in the picture, Peter gets a herd of cattle to stop the attacking Indians, and then the happy couple proceeds to get themselves hitched.Over two hours long, "Arizona" is one of the slowest paced westerns you will ever see.Producer/Director Wesley Ruggles spent a reported $2 million making "Arizona," and apparently could not bear to cut anything of the film he shot. This was Holden's first western, in a part originally intended for Gary Cooper. His performance is okay and he certainly holds his own with Arthur, who was ten years older, and still seems a bit too wholesome to be a frontier heroine. ...
