5-0 out of 5 stars Indian Love Call Classic
If ever a film deserved the label "classic romance," Rose Marie is the one.It starts out kinda slow, but gradually builds to a heartwrenching climax. Marie de Flor (Jeanette MacDonald) is an opera star who learns her brother, John Flower (James Stewart) has escaped from prison, allegedly killing a Canadian Royal Mounted Police in the process, and is in hiding.De Flor hires an Indian guide to take her tohim.Along the way into the Canadian wilderness, she meets up with Sgt. Bruce (Nelson Eddy),the Mounty tracking down her brother. She starts to give him a false name, "Rose . . ." but he recognizes her as a star, and assumes her full name is Rose Marie de Flor.Sgt. Bruce is immediately attracted to de Flor, but before long he guesses her relationship Flower, his prey. It's one of the all time classic dilemmatic situations as love develops between the two, who are each using the other to their own, opposite ends. De Flor depends on Bruceto survive the rugged trek through the wilderness, not knowing how much he knows; he expects her to lead him to her brother, while pretending to be along to protect her.I don't think it's ever been done more effectively, with "Indian Love Call" adding a haunting effect all the while. The cast also includes Reginald Owen, Alan Mowbray, Una O'Connor, and David Niven in an early, one scene, bit part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and haunting...
There is poignancy at the heart of this movie. It's a love story and love comes at a high price.Rose Marie, like many Eddy-MacDonald films, is filled with love and loss, yearning and sacrifice. The final scene of Rose Marie demonstrates these characteristics perhaps better than any of their other movies. This is a fine film, but it is dated and should be viewed in the context of its time. There are laughs, romance, bittersweet moments and beautiful, heart-felt singing. The MacDonald-Eddy chemistry is magical. This is a movie that should not be overlooked or forgotten. It will stay with you after you've seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertainment at its best
Rose Marie has it all. Wonderful music, a great story. Good clean entertainment. As for acting, this is Jeanette's and Nelson's best. It is also the first movie Jimmy Stewart was in.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A all time great!
"You have brought music back into my home".This is a story about a man, who lost his wife, suffered loneliness, realized the value of his family and embraces his family once again in music and drama, and falls in love with a woman of great culture and life.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL TRANSFER OF A PERFECT MOVIE
SOUND OF MUSIC 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Fox) is the latest digital version of this beloved, timeless, film. The two-disc set features an exceptionally sharp transfer and a rich audio mix but the real treat is the new commentary with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer (this in addition to the late Robert Wise's commentary).

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Can't We All Just Get Along for Love's Sake
It's a 60's remake of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Maria and Tony come from two different ethnic backgrounds, but what they do share is the love and passion they have for one other. However, their already fueding families would never accept such a union and blood will be shed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Words cant describe the beauty and splender of this movie
This is the best movie ever created and that is all that needs to be said. Many people who have reviewed this product state that the gangs are fighting eachother with ballet, and that there is no such thing as love at first sight and that the plot makes no sense. Dont listen to these people. buy this DVD and you will be blown off your feet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Musical Ever Put On Film --- And Then Some!
I've seen this show on Broadway several times, in community theatre at least twice and have seen the movie more times than I can count, but this DVD edition is absolutely wonderful! Especially great for a film buff like me are the hefty special features and even a copy of the screenplay. This retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story in the streets of New York just can't be beat on any front, from the opening bird's eye views to the closing pull-back from the playground and even the masterful credits (to give everyone time to dry their eyes before the lights came on) is a great addition to any movie musical fan's DVD collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait
This brand new edition of SOUTH PACIFIC is a must for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.Based on characters and segments from James Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific", the story takes place on the islands during the tail-end of World War II.A pretty young nurse from Arkansas, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor), falls in love with a wealthy French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi).Their relationship is tested when she discovers that he fathered two children with a now-dead Polynesian wife, and that he is wanted for the murder of a man in France. As Nellie confronts her own fears and prejudices, the handsome Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) falls helplessly in love with Bali Ha'i island beauty Liat (France Nuyen).Filling out the comedy in the tale are Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall), the wheeler-dealer with a heart of pure gold; and Luther Billis (Ray Walston), the tattooed leader of the beach-bound troops.
1-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled Terrible Pacific.
Film quality wss poor as was the editing.Would return if I could.Edited out most of Brazzis singing which is highlight of show. We had way too much of Mitzi Gaynor.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAIT FOR THE 2 DISCS EDITION. IT IS REALLY A MASTERPICE
Thank's God I live in Europe (Portugal)and we can buy here the fantastic 2 disc version of South Pacific remasterd. It is a fantastic DVD with a quality never surpassed by any other motion picture published in DVD. The early version like Oklahoma was not very good but...we have waited and now we have the prize. Yes, I am one of those obnoxious friends who likes to sing along with the movie. And not only that, I've seen this one so many times, I can talk along with the dialogue, too!Yes, ladies and germs, this is Singin in the Rain! The fabulous movie that has brought you such unforgettable lines as:
1-0 out of 5 stars Singing in the Rain -most excelent
This movie entertains over and over again. The quality of the film on the dvd is great. The extra's on the dvd are well worth it.If you love Gene Kelly this is one you will really treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing movie, even more amazing extras!
This film, I think, can be considered to be the greatest musical of all time. I just LOOOVED it! Gene Kelly's magic feet dance to catchy Jazz-Age tunes, there are colorful musical numers, and superb comedy. What more could you ask for? And I'm glad it's finally out on a 2-disc special edition, with great special features. I loved the documentaries on disc 2, but what I REALLY LIKED about the extras were the musical clips from the movies where the songs originated! I didn't know about Freed/Brown songs then, I was suprised to find out that the movie was based on all of those songs from the early talkies. Those clips just changed my life. I bought most of the movies they were excerpted from. Now I know who Eleanor Powell is, I know who Robert Taylor is, and I'm totally hooked on their films! I've seen practically all of Eleanor Powell's movies! I mostly love about the extras is the "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin'" clip. The first time I saw it, I was just dazed, and I was wondering who the heck Robert Taylor and June Knight were. I thought that musical number was the most beautiful and most escapist and most romantic number I'd ever seen in my life. Taylor and Knight make a LOVELY looking couple. Oh, and I've also seen 2 of June Knight's few films. So I bought Broadway Melody of 1936. Now, it's my favorite movie. If you don't see that you're missin' out big time. This movie, Singin' in the Rain started movie collecting which consists of over a 100 DVDs and rare VHSs. So I just want to say that Singin' in the Rain is one of my favorite movies of all time, and thank God for it, or else I'd never have liked musicals and old movies in the first place. P.S. The song "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' really should've been a big production musical number in Singin' in the Rain. Bet it would've turned out wonderful, because that's such a great song, maybe even better than the title tune! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait...
This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of THE KING AND I is a must for all fans of the timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece.Widowed English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) travels to Siam after she is offered a position to tutor the children of the King (Yul Brynner).Once in Siam, Anna and the King clash on matters of politics, ethics and the heart...two very different individuals who manage to still find the very best in each other. This magical movie has never looked or sounded better, in a new DVD remaster.Audio commentary for the film is provided by Michael Portantiere and Richard Barrios.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful if nothing else
If you've never seen this film adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein's broadway hit 'The King & I'...I suggest you do.While it's far from perfect, and it's not even the best musical to grace the big screen, 'The King & I' packs a whallop of a punch and sports some great acting and beautiful sets that will do nothing short of take your breath away. The plot is simple.A widow and her son move to Siam to help teach the Kings children and while there they all take turns learning from one another. The woman, Anna (Deborah Kerr) is a very independant mother who butts heads with the very independant King (Yul Brynner). As she demands the house he promised her as well as continues to teach and fall in love with the children on Siam, Anna slowly begins to understand the way of life she at first refused to understand. The film comes down to dramatic conclusion that tests their friendship and at the same time affirms their silent love for one another. The film soars with it's beautiful story of two unlikly friends who slowly, and subtly fall in love, and soars even higher when you get a glimpse of the fantastic stage sets (which are even richer on the stage which I just had the privilage of seeing last night with Lou Diamond Phillips who was outstanding!).The singing is decent, Kerr proving she has the best chops, but it's the story that steals the show.Yes this is a musical, but strip that away and you still have an engrossing love story that is above average.I'd recommend this to anyone, a great family film that everyone will enjoy. The 'Uncle Toms Cabin' presentation done in Siamese style is the most impressive part of the film and the stage performance and is sure to make this movie a memerable experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Fan
I don't know how many times I have watched my video of this film, but I enjoy watching every time!!!It is the one video I Treasure.I love all the songs. When will it be put on DVD????

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a fairytale
I'd had this video for years and can't tell you how many times I watched. It's like watching a beautiful fairytale. The setting, the costumes, the music are all beautiful. The entire cast superb. The only disappointing thing about this movie is that Mario Lanza did not get to perform the part of the prince even though he had recorded all the songs for the movie--it's his voice you hear--and the screenplay was written especially for him.But because he had a problem controlling his weight, the studio replaced him with Edmund Purdom, whom I think did a superb job overall--you can not tell he's not the one really singing.I love Ann Blyth as the leading lady--so lovely and so is her voice. All the songs are beautiful, and Mario's voice is out of this world.I gave my video to Anthony Kearns(one of the Irish Tenors) at one of his concerts and told him they should do a remake of this movie using him as the prince (of course they would have to deal with the Irish accent). As it turns out, Anthony now sings two of the songs from this movie.I recently got another video of this movie from Amazon.com and can once again watch it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars ABeautiful Musical but Sad Love Story !!
I finally got the opportunity to purchase this movie, and it is the singing of Mario Lanza that blows me away . My favorites are "Beloved" , "Serenade" and "Summertime in Heidelberg", and "Deep in My Hear, Dear" , everytime I hear Mario sang those songs to Kathie , my heart just melts.Edmund Purdom does make a very handsome prince and very good lip synching too. Must of been a very tough job for him.Ann Blyth was perfect in her role as the barmaid, and what a lovely soprano voice she has!! Edmund and Ann make a great couple and they had very good chemistry working together, no wonder they did a movie together again the following year "The King's Thief" .A must watch for musical lover's fan.5 stars for singing and acting !!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense but still worth to watch!
Music is by Cole Porter, directed by Vincente Minnelli, and staring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. That sounds like promised musical to be impressed. However it didn't seem to get the result as expected.
2-0 out of 5 stars I'm the only one who didn't care for it.
Gene Kelly was very good in it, and it did have one very good musical number with Kelly, that I saved, after I recorded it from Turner Classic Movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Pirate Should Be On DVD!
The Pirate starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly is a wonderful musical and the singing and dancing by the two leads is excellent and I wonder why this movie hasn't been put on DVD yet and I think it's about time it got the DVD treatment! Today I REJOICE!I have been waiting for years to hear the news that "TAP" starring the GREATS Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines would be released on dvd.The date is August 29, 2006 so get ready! This movie is tap dance history! Great tap dancers old and young join forces to bring to the screen a celluloid history lesson for those who care to be educated. This is one of my favorite movies and while I haven't been able to watch it since Gregory's passing in August, 2003, I plan to celebrate on the release date.

Editorial Review

The second half of this 1943 Technicolor musical is an excuse for MGM's contract talent to perform songs and sketches in a big show at an Army base. Unfortunately, more than an hour passes before the show arrives, stranding the viewer with a thin service comedy about an opera singer (Kathryn Grayson) tagging along to a military camp in hopes of reuniting her estranged parents, whose names are Bill and Hillary (no comments, please). Romance comes in the form of private Gene Kelly, a former trapeze artist who misses the glory of his former life. Grayson warbles, and Kelly has one nifty solo dance (with a mop and broom), but the all-star revue is the movie's main attraction. The song selection is generally poor ("I Dug a Ditch in Wichita" is performed twice), with Lena Horne's sultry take on "Honeysuckle Rose" an exception. She's backed by Benny Carter and His Orchestra. Specialty player Virginia O'Brien delights with one of her deadpan numbers, Eleanor Powell tap dances, and Judy Garland delivers with a boogie-woogie lilt on "Jumpin' Down at Carnegie Hall." Comedy sketches with Red Skelton and Frank Morgan are stubbornly unfunny. Then there'sJosé Iturbi, the Spanish-born conductor, making his film debut at thebeginning of his run as MGM's supposedly cute highbrow. Director George Sidneywould team up two years later with Iturbi, Kelly, and Grayson in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite Kathryn Grayson movies
I love this movie. Most people only watch it because of all the MGM stars in it.i personally think this is the most boring part of the picture.I enjoy the romance between Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson much more than the songs, dances, and comedy scetches of the stars. The only thing I think is wrong with this movie is that Kathyrn Gryason only sings three songs which is hardly displaying her talent (although the songs are pretty good), and Gene Kelly only dances once.I'dlike to say to anybody thinking of seeing this movie: go for it.It's wonderful!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thousands cheer--when it's finally over!
With a cast like this, I thought how they go wrong? Well, they managed! This movie goes on forever, with a plot that's predictable from the first few minutes, yet keeps dragging on and on. The only relief is Gene Kelly's dance routine with a mop, but otherwise there's little that's even musical about it. Be prepared to fast forward to the real entertainment, which is about an hour and half into the movie. During a "show for the soldiers," the film makers bring on a huge cast of stars who all have brief songs or scenes. Lena Horne is beautiful as always singing "Honeysuckle Rose," Red Skelton does a pretty funny skit, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Lucille Ball, Gloria de Haven, and June Allyson are all right, and Virginia O'Brian is wonderful. Unfortunately, except for these few numbers near the end, it's not worth watching, even for major Gene Kelly fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of MGM stars
MGM redefines the big-screen musical extravaganza in this 1943 roll-out of MGM stars... Gene Kelly and Katheryn Grayson, Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Red Skelton and Margaret O'Brien, plus Lucille Ball, Donna Reed, Ann Southern, Lena Horne, Frank (Oz) Morgan, Mary Astor, June Allyson, and John Boles and Ish Kabibble with Kay Kyser's big band. 5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Music Man
Terrific piece of Americana, enhanced by Preston's bravado and Wilson's witty script and score. Comic touches abound, and the film's resolution actually has a bit of zing! One of two films guaranteed to bring me to tears, time and time again. Who wouldn't want to be Harold Hill?

My Fair Lady is wonderful. (A bit chauvanistic for our time though). Eliza is a spitfire. The music is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bye Mr Chips with Peter O'Toole and Petual Clark
One of the finest films ever produced with outstanding music.I have other editions of this story, but none reach the standards of this masterpiece.I look forward to a release of this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest musicals we possess
It has always been a mystery to me as to the reasons behind the fashionable distaste for the musical version of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips."I've never been able to solve the mystery, but it is merely fashionability. The score is one of the most beautiful ever written -- I've listened to it across the span of my entire life from the time it was released in 1969 and have yet to find it anything but extraordinary. The film is a moving depiction of what love is really about and never fails to move me.The performances by both Peter O'Toole (why has Hollywood thought it useful to cheat this great actor of his due with a "real" Oscar -- sheer jealousy?) and Petula Clark are extraordinary. Yet, a strange, and, to me, bizarre cult of disparagement has risen about this film. Don't be fooled by fools who wish to belittle real talent. This is one of the all-time great musicals. Don't miss it. ... Read more

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (Read more

This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most WONDERFUL Doris Day movie ever!
This brings back SO many memories for me. As a child, my grandmother and I would watch musicals such as Calamity Jane, Tammy and the Bachelor, Oklahoma, and Showboat...however, this movie stands as my ALL time favorite...I fell in love with Calamity Jane at the young age of 8 or 9 and she will forever remain in my heart and mind a symbol of comedy and humor. This is a most recommended movie for all of you classical movie lovers out there. It just doesnt get any better than this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharpen Your Spurs!
This is a wonderful show! I've playing in the pit orchestra when my school did this musical and the music is addicting. Everyone was humming and singing the words for ages to come. Doris Day is a beautiful actress who blooms as Calamity Jane. The western romances between Calem and Wild Bill, Susan and Fryer, and Katie and Danny are well done in this wonderful show. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Musical Classic Well Worth Seeing Seventy Years Later
Sadly not available yet on DVD, the classic black-and-white 1936 version of the seminal 1927 Oscar Hammerstein-Jerome Kern musical is rarely seen these days since it's been overshadowed by the far more elaborate 1951 MGM color remake (which is
