5-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: The Nightingale
Mick Jagger stars as the Emperor of Cathay in this beautiful and lavish production from Faerie Tale Theatre. It's one of the most touching faerie tales, and it turns out to be one of the best episodes from this series. Jagger turns in an excellent performance as the Emperor, and Barbara Hershey is absolutely charming as the loyal kitchen maid. A spellbinding episode that is one of my favourites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
If you look at this movie, you will see the amazing and very clear projection of what happens when in a relationship one partner views the other as a "thing", a "posession", an "object" rather than providing care and love. We can learn from this movie decades later in that in relationships we all need a real connection, an internal love that in which the two characters found (Renee and Maxime). They connected, since they were both viewed as "objects" by the one who controlled them and viewed them this way. Both attempted to escape the control they were under and in doing so wound up being blackmailed by the controller. What a great movie to show how power and control and the fear of losing it, will stop at nothing to destroy anothers kindred spirit. Although the ending was not a typical "happily ever after" ending, it dipicts real life, and real people who manipulate others to keep themselves on top.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Deserts
This is a French film. It was produced and directed by French, stars mostly French and is, of course, in French. The English subtitles are optional.Being French, it naturally has a cavalier and "French" attitude towards many things. Fidelity, commitment, honesty, marriage and such are purely optional. Lechery and revenge are not. That is the crux of the story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Slow But Interesting Morality Tale
I couldn't get into this movie at first. It is the kind of film you must watch with no distractions to catch the subleties and nuances that are its strength. Otherwise, it feels very slow moving, verging on dull. But if you stick with it, you acclimate to the pace and this tale of adultery, betrayal and revenge manages a nice balance of stylization and realism. It manages to ask a very basic question about the universal dillemma: monogamy in marriage and it's pitfalls. Or strengths, depending on how you interpret its message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: The Three Little Pigs
Hilarious episode from the Faerie Tale Theatre series with an all-star cast. Billy Crystal as well as his on-screen brother actors are excellent as the three pigs, and Jeff Goldblum is show-stealing as the Big Bad Wolf. Valerie Perrine is a knock-out and makes a surprisingly sexy pig in this faerie tale. A great comedic hit for the entire family to enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure From My Twenties.
This movie isn't particularly good--it's a basic marriage of convenience and cheating tupperware party. It's still got great, funny moments even if it doesn't always make sense, but I wouldn't thumb my nose at it.I never saw the original nor, until looking up these reviews, did I even know there was one.Rebecca DeMornay is always beautiful, and her performance is actually quite hilarious in places. The situations are outrageous, and Vincent Spano is nice eye candy if not much else.Donovan Leitch's son also turns in a solid supporting role performance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
It's particularly a great film, "And God Created Woman" never lacks in sheer entertainment value, and it will always be a cinematic landmark. It is a landmark not only because it caused such a scandal, but because the large box-office success of that scandal showed that audiences were willing and eager to see films that dealt openly with human sexuality, thus paving the way for the dismantling of film censorship boards, which allowed the international film industry to revolutionize cinematic subject matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two words.Frank Langella.
This is one of those laughably bad movies where you find yourself wondering how much worse it can get, and then it gets worse. Rebecca DeMornay does her best to summon a this-is-how-twenty-and-thirty-something-guys-think-a-sexy-wild-chick-looks-when-she's-having-sex persona, but really, she doesn't bring one iota of sensuality to the character. For a movie that's supposed to be all about sex, overall it's curiously un-sexy. There is one reason, and one reason only to sit through (the unrated version of) this movie -- Frank Langella. On the pool table. In the hot tub. On the floor. The only true depiction of desire and passion in the entire silly thing. In those all too brief scenes, he makes Vincent Spano's character look like a colorless, bloodless, bumbling schoolkid (not too difficult to do considering Spano's acting job), and it's just one part of the lunacy of this thing that she goes home to him when she has the glorious, magnificent masculinity of Frank Langella offered to her for the night. Are you kidding me?? He is a peerless actor who must surely count this clunker among the what-was-I-thinking parts of his resume, but he gets ten stars for turning in the movie's only moments of real passion. He invests the word "wait" with more sensuality than the entire rest of the cast in the entire movie combined!

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't get the DVD advertised
I noted several reviews about dubbing and how the colors were "yellow and washed out".The film was shown in French with English subtitles on TV5, the international French station, with fairly good color.Look for another edition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Well made and acted but too slow
I saw a clear version of this movie under its French title Le Repos Du Guerrier. The movie had English subtitles.1-0 out of 5 stars A jaundiced version?
THIS is an extraordinary film..the entire picture looks jaundiced that it might perhaps be better off described as black&yellow rather than colour. That aside this is the dubbed version, something I never really liked in a film, the stars' lips were obviously out of sync with the dialogue and the plot incredibly shallow and bland ( though I suspect it was intended to convey some profound message...but what?). Bardot saves a man's life and falls for this sad character...well love is truly blind here and in the process dumps her fiancee and starts avoiding her mother. Finally if I was not a Bardot fan I would not have sat through this....my eyes were sore afterwards. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Roger Vadim's directorial debut is more titillation than continental cool, but it broke box-office records and censorship taboos in its teasing display of sex and eroticism in the sunny vacation playground of the Saint-Tropez seashore. Vadim ushered in the era of continental attitudes toward sex and christened the voluptuous Brigitte Bardot (his wife) the world's original sex kitten: earthy, innocent, and all fleshy curves. Bardot is Juliette, a pouty child-woman orphan prone to nude sunbathing and playful flirting. Though pursued by a rich widower (Curt Jurgens) and attracted to the brawny fisherman Antoine (Christian Marquand), she marries Antoine's shy younger brother Michel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an earnest, innocent kid hardly older than she but far less worldly. Despite her sincere efforts to "be good," Juliette gives in to Michel's advances, setting off a chain of events that ends in fraternal conflict.Vadim keeps the display of skin this side of an R rating, but only barely, teasing the male audience with skimpy outfits, barely concealing sheets, and often conveniently arranged scenery. Bohemian Bardot frolics through the film with nary a self-conscious moment, culminating in a passionate mambo, her pent-up frustration and sexual confusion exploding in a mad dance as bongos pound away on the soundtrack. Who needed Viagra in the '50s when Bardot was around? Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, and worth watching for more than Bardot.
I saw this recently on a lark just to see what all the Brigitte Bardot fuss was about -- and wasn't expecting much since sex comedy farces (particularly French ones) aren't high on my film watch lists -- but was surprised at how good (and good-natured) it was.Besides the vivacious charms of Ms. Bardot, this film had a solid script and good acting and dialogs. (One of my favorite lines had Bardot replying to a query why a family won't sell its puny shipyard to the effect that they want to at least still *own* something to not to feel poor.)The story is not highbrow, but is far from being lowbrow and tawdry and exploitative as some newcomers (like me) might perceive from its notorious reputation. Bardot plays Juliette, the "town tramp" of St. Tropezwho is pursued by a rich, elderly playboy while carrying the torch for Antonio, an impecunious shipwright who treats her just as a convenient one-night-stand.In comes Antonio's younger brother, Michele, who truly loves her and offers to marry her to save her from being sent back to the orphanage. Juliette marries Michele and comes to love him despite herself, while fighting against her reckless, impetuous nature as Antonio comes back into the scene and presents a constant temptation. Will love or lust wins out?Call me old-fashioned, but I liked how the movie ends, and I agree with another Amazon reviewer's analysis (Robert Cartland), which hits it square on the head. (BTW, the video transfer for this Criterion DVD edition is excellent, eliminating all the old flaws while preserving the warm, vibrant colors of the St. Tropez location to great effect.)

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sex Kitten is Born
If you've never watched any of Bardot's movies, I'd say this would be the best place to start. It displays Brigitte at the height of her beauty and is the perfect vehicle to show case her unbridled, breathtaking sensuality. Though the plot is thin and the sex scenes and nudity(which are actually more in the viewers imagination than on screen),are very tame and modest by today's standards, you can see why Bardot would have been ahead of her time and why she became a screen icon and legend. In a sense she was the original example of the sexually liberated woman, living by her own laws of sensuality and freedom. Along with that you can't take your eyes of her, she is a goddess incarnate and what she lacks in acting ability, she makes up for in charm and natural screen presence. Brigitte's 'Juliette' character, a teenaged orphan forced into a marriage of convenience, is childishly irresponsible, sulky, untamed and larger than life. But then I find a lot of French movies like to portray their woman as pouting, rebellious, reckless man eaters. Bardot was the original sex kitten however, with her tousled mane, luscious pout, gorgeous shapely figure, and careless sexy walk, she spawned a generation of imitators; her style still evident more than ever in today's starlets, who can't hold a candle to her. Director Roger Vadim makes good use of beautiful and unspoiled St Tropez as a backdrop, but it is his stunning, shapely young 'Mrs' who carries this film.I doubt if it would have got a second look without her presence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bardolatry at its finest!
This is the film that made Brigitte Bardot a legend. I have to admit: I have tried to look at this film objectively and I find it alternately demeaning, silly, and just plain dumb. So how come I'm giving it five stars? One word: Bardot. If you were to assemble a dictionary that would use visuals to illustrate the various words, Bardot's mambo sequence would authoritatively define the word "sensual." With the pulsating sound of the bongos in the background punctuated by blaring horns, Brigitte is larger than life dancing from room to room like a woman possessed. This may not be acting but it sure holds your attention - kind of like watching a human being transform into a wild animal. This sequence tells you all you need to know about why Bardot is a legend even in her senior years. And no, I don't believe And God Created Woman's silly ending in which we are expected to believe that a few slaps from Jean Louis Trintignant are enough to turn Bardot into a submissive French housewife. On the other hand, I don't think audiences in the 1950's were ready to deal with the reality of a sexually liberated woman like Brigitte. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a true classic of the series
THE TALE OF THE FROG PRINCE is among the best episodes of the entire FAERIE TALE THEATRE series. With a sharply comedic script by Eric Idle and capable leads in Robin Williams and Teri Garr, it is a wild and wacky adaptation of the classic fairytale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film
Roger Vadim is hardly a distinguished name in the history of film, but he was always better than most of his detractors thought, and when he ran into good material and a strong cast, good things happened.
4-0 out of 5 stars French charm and coldness
I have not been a great fan of Roger Vadim. For feminist reasons, naturally: it doesn't raise a lot of confidence to know, how he treated women and made them all look like blond barbiedolls. But sometimes he did good movies. This is a good one. And he didn't make Jeanne Moreau dye her hair blonde!
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but disappointing....
"Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Choderlos de Laclos is one of my favorite books.I've seen all the other adaptations, and with a cast like Jeanne Moreau and Gerard Philippe I was really looking forward to seeking this one.Well... the performances are great, but the film leaves a lot to be desired. In contrast to the more recent TV film with Rupert Everett and Catherine Deneuve, it does not fare quite so well in adapting the story to a 20th century (1950s/early 1960s) setting.Making Valmont and Merteuil (Juliette in this version, perhaps a reference to the Marquis de Sade's anti-heroine) husband and wife rather than ex-lovers was a really bad idea, since it totally alters their dynamic and removes one of the key elements in the characters' motivation: Valmont's pact with Merteuil that she will spend the night with him if he can seduce the pious Madame de Tourvel. Also, the film feels very "rushed," especially toward the end -- 106 minutes just isn't enough to do justice to this story and these characters.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars fine (though curious) entry in the series
THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN is a fine (though a little curious) entry into the fabulous FAERIE TALE THEATRE series. Curious that the subject matter isn't really a fairytale. The story comes from the famed poem by Robert Browning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Faerie Tale Theatre Ever!
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is the best episode of Faerie Tale Theatre. In adapting faerie tales for film or television, the biggest difficulty seems to be in capturing that sense of awe and wonder that the original stories invoke. Without picture illustrations and a child's imagination to fill in the blanks, the original stories often appear static and lifeless on the screen. At worst, the sublime becomes downright ridiculous. Faerie Tale Theatre is a great and entertaining show, but rarely has it captured that sense of magic. This episode is one time that is has, and the results are truly something to behold. Eric Idle is the only "name" here, but the rest of the cast is equally perfect in their roles. Nicholas Meyer creates an entire other world, utilizing medieval tones in setting and costumes, as well as an eerie score of pipes from composer James Horner. The effect is mesmerizing, and if the use of rhyme as dialogue takes some getting used to, it only adds to the haunting impact in the end. This episode may be too disturbing for the youngest children, but all lovers of faerie tales owe it to themselves to see this. It doesn't have the budget of big-screen fantasies, but I rank this right up there with the NeverEnding Story and the Dark Crystal. If you love those films, then you understand what I mean about the sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and surreal...as fairy tales should be.
In the early to mid eighties, Shelly Duvall produced a cable show for the then flagship HBO network called Faerie Tale Theatre. The intent was to bring classic childhood stories to an audience of young and old alike through big name stars, directors, and hip, irreverent writing. Without this series, there would not have been a "Princess Bride". Although many of these were excellent examples of the best television could offer, the finest hour (for me) was director Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of Robert Browning's "Pied Piper of Hamelin". Both faithful to the original poem and liberal in its creative embellishments, Meyer perfectly captured the eerieness of the story. The show starred Eric Idle and he makes a perfect Piper. Tall, pale, with piercing eyes and a hawklike nose, Idle looke every bit the character: part mystic, part mercenary. And his final march out of Hamelin with the children is truly the stuff of innocent nightmares. Without sentimentality, without any concession to cuteness, this episode proved that within all great children's stories lurked something magical and sinister...Just like adulthood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories!
I haven't seen this movie since my childhood, but I am desperately searching for a copy.It is a sweet account of the cinderella story, and to this day, every time I see Matthew Broderick in a film, I call him my Prince Charming.I recommend this to children and anyone else wanting memories of their childhood in the 80s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: Cinderella
One of the most romantic episodes in the excellent Faerie Tale Theatre series, this one is the classic rags-to-riches story of Cinderella. Jennifer Beals beautifully portrays the role of Cinderella, and Matthew Broderick makes a delightfully witty Prince Henry. The appearances of Jean Stapleton as the fairy godmother and Eve Arden as the wicked stepmother are superb. The costumes, sets and music are truly divine in this wonderful faerie tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
These videos were my absolute favorite as a kid, and at 20, I'm still watching them! They're all so beautifully done and have such wonderful actors!I'm saving all of my copies to show my children some day! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The 2 Je t'aime women together in BB's last film. Erotic!
Brigitte Bardot stars here in her last film along with Jane Birkin, the other singer who recorded the Serge Gainesbourg hit, "Je t'aime". This film is worth seeing, as we see BB's and Vadim's evolution from "And God Created Woman" to this post-sixties over-the-top comedy-drama.4-0 out of 5 stars Brigitte Looks Fabulous!
While the story is a bit odd, it is interesting. The film is very stylish and Brigitte looks absolutely fabulous!Besides, it is better than most of what Hollywood dishes out even today. But, I suppose having the gorgeous Brigitte grace our TV screens for a couple hours just isn't enough for some critics. It certainly works for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Bardot!!!
This is the Bardot I love! Captured within Classic early seventie's stylings, But they never Eclipse her great aura. Cool story of sexual domination, and it's inevitable destuction. Directed with a surprisingly steady hand of Roger Vadim. Stylish clothes, sexy french locales, even a prophetic mention of how computers will enhance our lives. Pick it up before it disappears like all great Foreign films/DVDs! ... Read more
