3-0 out of 5 stars Languid Chills...
Vadim's take on Sheridan le Fanu's tale Carmilla is a somewhat languid chiller, updated to modern (1960) Italy and starring the lovely Annette Stroyberg as Carmilla and Elsa Martinelli as Georgia.Pitched somewhere between the supernatural and the psychological Vadim draws us into a lushly coloured but oddly crepuscular landscape in which Carmilla may indeed be possessed by the spirit of her vampire ancestor Millarca or alternatively a depressive caught in the spell of an overwhelming romantic imagination.Mel Ferrer is Leopoldo, the less-than-sympathetic, almost sexist object of her spurned affections. The film's reputation hinges on two scenes of intense dream-like claustrophobia; the first is a rain-soaked kiss in a hot-house replete with a heady lesbian suggestion and the second is a nightmare in monochrome and red inflicted upon Georgia toward the climax.Beautiully filmed but terribly marred (in fact almost ruined) by the studio 'need' to engage the Exposition Fairy, destroying Vadim's careful mood with Carmilla's constant voice-overs needlessly 'explaining' to the audience exactly what is happening. Deserving of a DVD Director's re-cut (removing all the awful exposition, ala Bladerunner) and presented in its original Technirama format, no doubt something not very likely to happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM BUT...
This is definitley one of the best horror films i have ever seen. It is beautiful, lush, and a bit scary at some parts. Its more of a gothic romance than a 60's horror. I only wish they would transfer this awesome film onto DVD someday soon... its to good to be stuck on VHS. I'm giving it 5 stars for the movie itself, not the fact its on VHS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vadim has a vision...
Vadim walked a very thin line at a time when it was very unconventional to, 'push the envelope' as one might say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: Rip Van Winkle
Atmospheric and delightful version of the Washington Irving classic from Faerie Tale Theatre. Francis Ford Coppola creates a spellbinding film with Harry Dean Stanton turning in a great performance as the man who liked to sleep alot! Talia Shire is wickedly funny as Rip's wife, Wilma. Alot of people probably think the same thing as I do, that the sets are a little too fake such as the sheet used for water when the goblins talk about their misfortunate shipwreck. Overall however, it's another excellent episode. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. 5-0 out of 5 stars Barbarella's influence on pop-culture...!
OK, we all know that Duran Duran got their name from the evil doctor in Barbarella, but Barbarella's influence on pop-culture extends far beyond that!
2-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment...
Jane Fonda was not only an excellent actress but a beautiful, if opinonated (remember Hanoi Jane?), woman.I watched this as a teenager and despite the "striptease" this has to be one of her worst.Hormones be damned, watching this was a waste of time.If you like Fonda, try Klute. She was an excellent actress --- but no one could survive this mess.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Stupid and boring"
I purchased this movie because I always thought Jane Fonda was very sexy. I still believe that but this movie sucked. It was corny and everything from Barbarella's carpeted space ship to the costumes made me think "low budget".

5-0 out of 5 stars Aroused
Roger Vadim's twisted satire of Southern California and the American education program was a flop on first release, and it was a long time before he dared return to the USA to make another feature. But today PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW definitely has the hallmarks of a masterpiece, anchored by four brilliant performances.First off, Rock Hudson in perhaps his last important picture. He's a little fleshy and with his shirt off the camera seemes reluctant to travel past his navel for fear of exposing some extra weight on his hips. And Vadim's cameraman (Chuck Rosher, who later did A WEDDING and THREE WOMEN for Robert Altman) hones in on some penetrating closeups which really show up his crows feet--he's lived and that seasons his character. As usual, he's the men girls want and the man boys want to be, but here it's a deeper and considerably darker version of himself than he ever let people see on the screen. His ideal married life is something of a sham, or is it?A cryptic epilogue with Telly Savalas makes us wonder if "Tiger" hasn't really the perfect marriage after all.Vadim needed a larger-than-life star for "Tiger" and he certainly got one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Different View
Oh, give me a break!I happen to really enjoy this movie because it is funny and it is a movie.Almost every complaint makes it appear as if it was more than just a movie. What's wrong?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure From My Twenties.
This movie isn't particularly good--it's a basic marriage of convenience and cheating tupperware party. It's still got great, funny moments even if it doesn't always make sense, but I wouldn't thumb my nose at it.I never saw the original nor, until looking up these reviews, did I even know there was one.Rebecca DeMornay is always beautiful, and her performance is actually quite hilarious in places. The situations are outrageous, and Vincent Spano is nice eye candy if not much else.Donovan Leitch's son also turns in a solid supporting role performance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
It's particularly a great film, "And God Created Woman" never lacks in sheer entertainment value, and it will always be a cinematic landmark. It is a landmark not only because it caused such a scandal, but because the large box-office success of that scandal showed that audiences were willing and eager to see films that dealt openly with human sexuality, thus paving the way for the dismantling of film censorship boards, which allowed the international film industry to revolutionize cinematic subject matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two words.Frank Langella.
This is one of those laughably bad movies where you find yourself wondering how much worse it can get, and then it gets worse. Rebecca DeMornay does her best to summon a this-is-how-twenty-and-thirty-something-guys-think-a-sexy-wild-chick-looks-when-she's-having-sex persona, but really, she doesn't bring one iota of sensuality to the character. For a movie that's supposed to be all about sex, overall it's curiously un-sexy. There is one reason, and one reason only to sit through (the unrated version of) this movie -- Frank Langella. On the pool table. In the hot tub. On the floor. The only true depiction of desire and passion in the entire silly thing. In those all too brief scenes, he makes Vincent Spano's character look like a colorless, bloodless, bumbling schoolkid (not too difficult to do considering Spano's acting job), and it's just one part of the lunacy of this thing that she goes home to him when she has the glorious, magnificent masculinity of Frank Langella offered to her for the night. Are you kidding me?? He is a peerless actor who must surely count this clunker among the what-was-I-thinking parts of his resume, but he gets ten stars for turning in the movie's only moments of real passion. He invests the word "wait" with more sensuality than the entire rest of the cast in the entire movie combined!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My All Time Favorites
Cindy Pickett does a great job as Valerie, in this serious love story of sorts. She is a woman who has been raped in her youth and is still trying to overcome the trauma of the rape. She is seeking a normal life with her husband and finds it useless to attend therapy. So along comes Sean Daniels, a Welsh man, with some imaginative, erotic ideas of his own. Sean Daniels(Paul Jenkins), accent alone will arouse many a woman.
3-0 out of 5 stars Average story, Cindy Pickett and Joanna Cassidy are good
This movie concerns a "frigid", as a result of a sexual assault earlier in her life, woman's transformation as a result of a "secret lover", who comes to her in the night, for some erotic "games", hence the title. It's an average movie with good performances, and quite a bit of revealing scenes, especially Ms. Pickett; who has a fairly decent (if small breasted) body.Joanna Cassidy (who's a little more endowed) also has a revealing nude scene, poolside, with Ms. Pickett.A friend of her husband, who she can't abide becomes her nighttime lover, and "opens her up", so to speak, to the pleasures of sex; which she lost.[Why is it that most women in these movies only get their satisfaction by someone other than their husband; or in the case of a man, his wife-doesn't send a strong message about marital fidelity does it?]Anyway, it's a good, but not great movie, and it's a departure for Ms. Pickett; (...)For anyone who watched that show, and I didn't, it's quite a shock.Worth a look. ... Editorial Review

Roger Vadim's directorial debut is more titillation than continental cool, but it broke box-office records and censorship taboos in its teasing display of sex and eroticism in the sunny vacation playground of the Saint-Tropez seashore. Vadim ushered in the era of continental attitudes toward sex and christened the voluptuous Brigitte Bardot (his wife) the world's original sex kitten: earthy, innocent, and all fleshy curves. Bardot is Juliette, a pouty child-woman orphan prone to nude sunbathing and playful flirting. Though pursued by a rich widower (Curt Jurgens) and attracted to the brawny fisherman Antoine (Christian Marquand), she marries Antoine's shy younger brother Michel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an earnest, innocent kid hardly older than she but far less worldly. Despite her sincere efforts to "be good," Juliette gives in to Michel's advances, setting off a chain of events that ends in fraternal conflict.Vadim keeps the display of skin this side of an R rating, but only barely, teasing the male audience with skimpy outfits, barely concealing sheets, and often conveniently arranged scenery. Bohemian Bardot frolics through the film with nary a self-conscious moment, culminating in a passionate mambo, her pent-up frustration and sexual confusion exploding in a mad dance as bongos pound away on the soundtrack. 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, and worth watching for more than Bardot.
I saw this recently on a lark just to see what all the Brigitte Bardot fuss was about -- and wasn't expecting much since sex comedy farces (particularly French ones) aren't high on my film watch lists -- but was surprised at how good (and good-natured) it was.Besides the vivacious charms of Ms. Bardot, this film had a solid script and good acting and dialogs. (One of my favorite lines had Bardot replying to a query why a family won't sell its puny shipyard to the effect that they want to at least still *own* something to not to feel poor.)The story is not highbrow, but is far from being lowbrow and tawdry and exploitative as some newcomers (like me) might perceive from its notorious reputation. Bardot plays Juliette, the "town tramp" of St. Tropezwho is pursued by a rich, elderly playboy while carrying the torch for Antonio, an impecunious shipwright who treats her just as a convenient one-night-stand.In comes Antonio's younger brother, Michele, who truly loves her and offers to marry her to save her from being sent back to the orphanage. Juliette marries Michele and comes to love him despite herself, while fighting against her reckless, impetuous nature as Antonio comes back into the scene and presents a constant temptation. Will love or lust wins out?Call me old-fashioned, but I liked how the movie ends, and I agree with another Amazon reviewer's analysis (Robert Cartland), which hits it square on the head. (BTW, the video transfer for this Criterion DVD edition is excellent, eliminating all the old flaws while preserving the warm, vibrant colors of the St. Tropez location to great effect.)

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sex Kitten is Born
If you've never watched any of Bardot's movies, I'd say this would be the best place to start. It displays Brigitte at the height of her beauty and is the perfect vehicle to show case her unbridled, breathtaking sensuality. Though the plot is thin and the sex scenes and nudity(which are actually more in the viewers imagination than on screen),are very tame and modest by today's standards, you can see why Bardot would have been ahead of her time and why she became a screen icon and legend. In a sense she was the original example of the sexually liberated woman, living by her own laws of sensuality and freedom. Along with that you can't take your eyes of her, she is a goddess incarnate and what she lacks in acting ability, she makes up for in charm and natural screen presence. Brigitte's 'Juliette' character, a teenaged orphan forced into a marriage of convenience, is childishly irresponsible, sulky, untamed and larger than life. But then I find a lot of French movies like to portray their woman as pouting, rebellious, reckless man eaters. Bardot was the original sex kitten however, with her tousled mane, luscious pout, gorgeous shapely figure, and careless sexy walk, she spawned a generation of imitators; her style still evident more than ever in today's starlets, who can't hold a candle to her. Director Roger Vadim makes good use of beautiful and unspoiled St Tropez as a backdrop, but it is his stunning, shapely young 'Mrs' who carries this film.I doubt if it would have got a second look without her presence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bardolatry at its finest!
This is the film that made Brigitte Bardot a legend. I have to admit: I have tried to look at this film objectively and I find it alternately demeaning, silly, and just plain dumb. So how come I'm giving it five stars? One word: Bardot. If you were to assemble a dictionary that would use visuals to illustrate the various words, Bardot's mambo sequence would authoritatively define the word "sensual." With the pulsating sound of the bongos in the background punctuated by blaring horns, Brigitte is larger than life dancing from room to room like a woman possessed. This may not be acting but it sure holds your attention - kind of like watching a human being transform into a wild animal. This sequence tells you all you need to know about why Bardot is a legend even in her senior years. And no, I don't believe And God Created Woman's silly ending in which we are expected to believe that a few slaps from Jean Louis Trintignant are enough to turn Bardot into a submissive French housewife. On the other hand, I don't think audiences in the 1950's were ready to deal with the reality of a sexually liberated woman like Brigitte. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars fierce competition
Apart from some Spanish sense of pride and honor, this movie is about a fierce competition. A competition between the beauty of Brigitte Bardot and that of the magnificent landscape in Southern Spain.
2-0 out of 5 stars Great scenery; terrible direction
Although the scenery is memorable in this Bardot film (including the female scenery), the direction is awful. And there are a few embarrassing moments. The worst is a stage-bound windmill (a la Don Quijote) scene where the shadow of the sails falls regularly on the background painting of distant hills! In short, Roger Vadim is a hit and miss director. He misses with this one. I only give it 2 stars for BB, the obnoxious pig whose life she saves, and the donkey, who seems to know the cinematic mess he's got himself into.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bardot sizzles but Boyd fizzles
This movie had the potential of being an exceptional love story but Boyd's portrayal of the lead character, Lamberto, just doesn't cut it in my view. Lamberto is virtually devoid of any charm, emotion, passion or romantic qualities. How can two women fall in love with this guy is beyond my comprehension.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film
Roger Vadim is hardly a distinguished name in the history of film, but he was always better than most of his detractors thought, and when he ran into good material and a strong cast, good things happened.
4-0 out of 5 stars French charm and coldness
I have not been a great fan of Roger Vadim. For feminist reasons, naturally: it doesn't raise a lot of confidence to know, how he treated women and made them all look like blond barbiedolls. But sometimes he did good movies. This is a good one. And he didn't make Jeanne Moreau dye her hair blonde!
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but disappointing....
"Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Choderlos de Laclos is one of my favorite books.I've seen all the other adaptations, and with a cast like Jeanne Moreau and Gerard Philippe I was really looking forward to seeking this one.Well... the performances are great, but the film leaves a lot to be desired. In contrast to the more recent TV film with Rupert Everett and Catherine Deneuve, it does not fare quite so well in adapting the story to a 20th century (1950s/early 1960s) setting.Making Valmont and Merteuil (Juliette in this version, perhaps a reference to the Marquis de Sade's anti-heroine) husband and wife rather than ex-lovers was a really bad idea, since it totally alters their dynamic and removes one of the key elements in the characters' motivation: Valmont's pact with Merteuil that she will spend the night with him if he can seduce the pious Madame de Tourvel. Also, the film feels very "rushed," especially toward the end -- 106 minutes just isn't enough to do justice to this story and these characters.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite kid-pleaser
My three-year-old daughter fell in love with this the first time we borrowed it from the library. I enjoyed it myself; my only gripe is Conchata Ferrell's performance. This usually very talented actress seems bored to tears and injects absolutely no feeling into her role as Thumbelina's mother. It's as if she was directed to perform as stoically as possible. I don't get it at all. I am also not impressed with Carrie Fisher's singing here. I know she is capable of singing quite beautifully, I just don't think the folkish songs in this tale are well suited to her instrument. It's hard to pull off such dirges unless the singer has that ethereal, almost mediaeval quality to her voice (think Loreena McKennitt, Mediaveal Baebes). But those minor complaints are of no consequence whatsoever to the intended audience. Children will certainly be enchanted! It's witty script and a fun production.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this series!
My brother, sisters and I grew up watching the Faerie Tale Theatre collection, and loving them all. By the way, they're not just for kids!My mother loved them so much she went out of her way to find them for my little niece to enjoy.I highly recommend them to anyone with (or even without) children to view them! ...

Editorial Review

An irresistible and guilty pleasure, this anthology based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe is a rare opportunity to see three of the biggest names in 1960s European film direction working in the short form. The results are uneven, but so what? They're also plain outrageous. Roger Vadim's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Vadim Revisited
There seems to be a consensus among critics, even amateur critics, regarding the horror trilogy "Spirits of the Dead."The prevailing view elevates Fellini's segment of the film (and sometimes Malle's) while denigrating Vadim's "Metzengerstein" as some relatively trivial hackwork. That mindset, widely disseminated, amounts to a conspiracy of bad taste. In fact, Vadim's little film is a masterpiece, easily the finest part of "Spirits of the Dead."On the simplest level, the trilogy was intended as a homage to the genius of Edgar Allan Poe; and certainly Vadim's "Metzengerstein" --a beautiful evocation of medieval fairy tale blended with DeSadean eroticism--comes closest to fulfilling that ideal. In contrast, Malle's "William Wilson" and Fellini's "Toby Dammit" are worlds away from Poe.Indeed, Malle's version of Poe is terribly marred by an emphatic artiness that could only be appreciated by film school undergraduates. For example, there's the suicidal plunge of Malle's anti-hero (Alain Delon) from a bell tower; presented over and over again from a multitude of angles, no celluloid descent into hell has ever been more ponderous. And Fellini's "Toby Dammit" undercuts horror by a heavy-handed satire of the Italian Academy Awards, which seems to belong in the pages of "Figaro."Vadim, however, has created something as irresistible as a dream: a rainswept castle in Brittany where a fantasticallybeautiful but cruel princess (Jane Fonda) struggles in vain against boredom, fate, and her murdered love's reincarnation; that reincarnation being nothing less than a huge, intractable stallion, such as medieval warriors would ride!
5-0 out of 5 stars Some people just don't get It........................
I disagree with all these reviews about spirits of the dead dvd. Every single story on here are all pieces of art.............I disagree that toby dammit is fellin's great piece of work..Give Me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!People just don't have any taste. Alain Deloin,Jane Fonda, Bridgett Bardott all contribute to this great piece of Art................Don't listen to the rest of the stupid reviews on the fellin's one being the only good story. If you Enjoy Vintage and Aprreciate Edgar Allan Poe This is for you overall that is One of the main reasons to buy this Movie........Bon Voyage...........

2-0 out of 5 stars Butchered Masterwork
As originally conceived by Fellini, the Toby Dammitt segment was, imho, the greatest work he ever committed to film.Taut, lean, stylish and very effective.I saw the film when it was first released and am fortunate enough to have this segment on an old beta tape.
