5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait
This brand new edition of SOUTH PACIFIC is a must for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.Based on characters and segments from James Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific", the story takes place on the islands during the tail-end of World War II.A pretty young nurse from Arkansas, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor), falls in love with a wealthy French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi).Their relationship is tested when she discovers that he fathered two children with a now-dead Polynesian wife, and that he is wanted for the murder of a man in France. As Nellie confronts her own fears and prejudices, the handsome Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) falls helplessly in love with Bali Ha'i island beauty Liat (France Nuyen).Filling out the comedy in the tale are Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall), the wheeler-dealer with a heart of pure gold; and Luther Billis (Ray Walston), the tattooed leader of the beach-bound troops.

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait...
This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of THE KING AND I is a must for all fans of the timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece.Widowed English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) travels to Siam after she is offered a position to tutor the children of the King (Yul Brynner).Once in Siam, Anna and the King clash on matters of politics, ethics and the heart...two very different individuals who manage to still find the very best in each other. This magical movie has never looked or sounded better, in a new DVD remaster.Audio commentary for the film is provided by Michael Portantiere and Richard Barrios.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful if nothing else
If you've never seen this film adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein's broadway hit 'The King & I'...I suggest you do.While it's far from perfect, and it's not even the best musical to grace the big screen, 'The King & I' packs a whallop of a punch and sports some great acting and beautiful sets that will do nothing short of take your breath away. The plot is simple.A widow and her son move to Siam to help teach the Kings children and while there they all take turns learning from one another. The woman, Anna (Deborah Kerr) is a very independant mother who butts heads with the very independant King (Yul Brynner). As she demands the house he promised her as well as continues to teach and fall in love with the children on Siam, Anna slowly begins to understand the way of life she at first refused to understand. The film comes down to dramatic conclusion that tests their friendship and at the same time affirms their silent love for one another. The film soars with it's beautiful story of two unlikly friends who slowly, and subtly fall in love, and soars even higher when you get a glimpse of the fantastic stage sets (which are even richer on the stage which I just had the privilage of seeing last night with Lou Diamond Phillips who was outstanding!).The singing is decent, Kerr proving she has the best chops, but it's the story that steals the show.Yes this is a musical, but strip that away and you still have an engrossing love story that is above average.I'd recommend this to anyone, a great family film that everyone will enjoy. The 'Uncle Toms Cabin' presentation done in Siamese style is the most impressive part of the film and the stage performance and is sure to make this movie a memerable experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars 20th Century Ripoff!!!
I specifically waited to buy this on DVD hoping to get a Todd-AO version and not just the Cinemascope version. The freaking Laserdisc looks better than this!I, for one, will not be buying any more "special editions" without reading the reviews in Amazon or elsewhere when it comes to 20th Century ripoff. This release reminds me of all the 20Th Laserdiscs that were first released when laser was just starting out and how poorly the transfers were treated...now it seems we're right back to the good old bad transfer days of yore.Yuk, I recommend that no one buy ANY of their discs (especially the upcoming crappy versions of STAR WARS non-anamorphic, non-5.1 sound original movies). These people suck big time!
5-0 out of 5 stars great
A true musical theater classic.Wonderful melodies that will last for years to come.
1-0 out of 5 stars Visual diappointment for a great format
Like several others, I agree that the Cinemascope version was well presented, but what a disappointment as far as the Todd-ao digital transfer! The original release I bought in 1999 gives a much clearer and brighter Todd-ao version that gives you a much better idea of what the original may have looked like. I enjoyed seeing "The Miracle of Todd-ao" again, but similarly the realism that was present in the original was lost, either due to poor quality of stock or inabilty to be able to digitally correct and sharpen the image. (I find it hard to imagine that Fox couldn't resore it better). There was an apology printed on our Region 4 version.

A guilty, guilty pleasure, perhaps not one a left-wing feminist should be admitting to in public. Female boomers should recall yearly TV reruns of this Rodgers and Hammerstein production, featuring such delights as "Impossible" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" It may appear a bit stark to younger viewers, but part of the charm of this 1964 network TV special, a remake of the live 1957 telecast originally built around Julie Andrews, is its utter simplicity. ...I picked up this tape along with a stack of others at an auction.I bid on the stack of tapes accidentally, thinking I was bidding on something else. But every cloud has a silver lining. (Or for the pessimists out there, every silver lining has a cloud.)
2-0 out of 5 stars Wow, in a Bad Way
This production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is cringeworthy at best.I understand this was a television movie, but they couldn't at least choose good actors and provide a better set?Cinderella acts and sounds like a complete ditz, all starry-eyed and breathless voice. It's partly the fault of the camera-work though.Every 10 seconds and it's an extreme close-up of Cinderella's face. It's frightening.I love the music and this musical, but if it's not well-acted or well-sung, it's not enjoyable for me.I've only heard the Julie Andrews version in soundtrack form, and already that one is 100X better. There's none of the pleasant, exciting, and lovely performances of the original cast. This version has no energy. The exception is the Prince and his parents the King and Queen; they weren't bad.But the rest of the show is the epitome of cheesiness - which could have been avoided if feeling and energy were put into the performances, even despite the terrible sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Rodgers' favorite is sublime musical theater.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's groundbreaking musical version of Molnar's "Liliom" has been given a fine rendering on film. Gordon Macrae is the carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, who falls in love with the lovely millworker, Julie Jordan, portrayed by the talented Shirley Jones. The road to happiness is paved with wife abuse, criminal acts, and tragedy, not the usual items found in musicals.
5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait
This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of CAROUSEL is definitely a must for all fans of the uplifting and inspiring Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.Considered by Rodgers as the personal favourite of all his works, and based on the play "Liliom" by Ferenc Molnar; the story concerns innocent factory-girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones) and jaded carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae).Despite coming from the opposite sides of the track, the two fall in love, but their relationship is tempered by Billy's violent outbursts and inability to find an honest job. When Julie becomes pregnant, he is talked into committing a robbery, but the plan backfires when he falls on his own knife and dies while trying to escape the police. Now in Heaven, Billy is given one last chance to redeem himself and to reconcile his now-teenaged daughter.Filled with haunting songs like "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone", CAROUSEL remains a very moving film experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
this is one of the best Broadway musicals on film. The entire cast and crew delivers and it`s no wonder why 20th Century-Fox took over MGM`s undisputed reign as a musical master. No one could do musicals like MGM, but by mid-50s the studio set musicals were coming of age and other studios jumped to the occasion with musicals such as The Sound of Music, this film, Hello Dolly, South Pacific and Song Of Norway.

5-0 out of 5 stars State Fair: Don't miss it! Don't even be late
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical State Fair, while often falling under the radar compared to their more popular shows such as "Sound of Music" or "Oklahoma," is still one of the sweetest, cutest musicals ever. The movie follows the Frake family, an average farm family in Iowa, as they prepare to go to their state's big summer fair.Melissa and Abel (Ma and Pa) want to win prizes; son Wayne wants to get even with a fair worker; and daughter Margy wants some excitement to happen in her otherwise mundane life.

Editorial Review

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (Read more

"You have brought music back into my home".This is a story about a man, who lost his wife, suffered loneliness, realized the value of his family and embraces his family once again in music and drama, and falls in love with a woman of great culture and life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good version thanks to Darin, Margaret, Cox
A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles.
3-0 out of 5 stars Best ever "State Fair"
I've only rated this 3 stars as it's VHS not DVD.If available on DVD it would be a definate 5. It's a perfect mix of comedy, romance and drama. How can you not help cheer for "Blue Boy" and laugh at the mince meat judging. This movie is what a lot of movies today are missing - heart. PLEASE bring it out on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the THIRD version of this classic, all a must see!
1933 was the first version starring Will Rogers. And while the 1945 version became a classic in its own right, both were staged from the Iowa State Fairs. Then came this 1962 version with the setting of the Texas State Fair including Big Tex as one of its star attractions. While the plots are basically the same, this version taps into race car fans alike and while the Texas State Fair had no race track of its own, the race track that was filmed was from the Oklahoma State Fair's Grandstand Speedway track which still exists as an active race car dirt track. All versions need to be seen during Fair season, you'll appreciate each. ...
