Richard Simmons is the king of motivational exercise, especially if you're a beginner. This video workout is a dance party simulating a class reunion, with an energizing live band playing lively hits from the '50s and '60s, such as "It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To," "Great Balls of Fire," and "Dancing in the Streets." The singers and musicians sometimes come offstage and dance with the exercisers, adding to the energy and festivity. The choreography is very simple, low impact, light intensity, and appropriate for beginners and overweight exercisers. (You may not get your heart rate up if you're very fit, although you'll enjoy the music.) Richard doesn't do much in the way of cueing--he assumes you'll just follow along. His onscreen class has women and men of all body shapes and sizes, and everyone is having a blast. You will, too. At the end, the exercisers dance down the floor and the screen flashes how many pounds they've lost--several have lost more than 100 pounds. (22 minutes of aerobics, total 43 minutes with warm-up, cool down, and stretch.) Read more

The workout is a lot of fun, but even if you are not buying it for the exercise, this video delivers a ton of fun and a trip down memory lane. Were we really so young, fat, and naive?Awesome!

1-0 out of 5 stars workout?
I thought Richard Simmons would offer a good energetic workout. I would recomend this product to the elderly or people with physical conditions, I on the other hand got more of a workout walking to the mailbox to get this tape. I stood in front of the tv for about 15 min's waiting for them to start the actual workout I then started fast forwarding looking for the workout. I never found it. I then took the tape out and put another one in. If you are looking for a good workout I would recommend you look elsewhere. Sorry Richard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Simmons = good
First of all I would just like to say that I love Richard Simmons and his tapes have made me happier than any other workout tape I have ever used. I am 16 years old, and when I was little, about 3 or 4, my mom bought Richard Simmons: Sweatin' to the Oldies, her and her friends would excercise to it and bring their daughters along and we would dance and just have a good time to the music. Now, they haven't done that in years, well, probobly about 12 years actually, and I, being the naive teenager I was, would make fun of my mom for having done Richard Simmons because it seemed so lame. But then a couple years ago, in secret, because I would have been devistated to like, have my older brother and his friends come down and see me doing Richard Simmons, I put in Richard Simmons and excerised with him. And I actually really liked it! I loved the cheesy dance moves and watching the people on the tape sing along to the music! It makes you feel so good about yourself and (suprisingly) did not make me feel like a loser! It made me feel good. Now if I ever am feeling like I have been lazy all day but it's too rainy or cold to go outside running and I'm too lazy (or it's too late) to go to the gym, I pop in Richard Simmons. It still makes me feel good. At the end of the workout whenyou cool down he tells you to "Give yourself a hug" and it makes me smile, everytime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This is my all time favorite workout video! This video is great for the young and the old because it combines fun dance moves with great oldies classics that everyone can enjoy. It's the perfect workout for those with bad joints or do not have a wide range of motion. The perfect start and end to a more thinner, happier you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite workout Video
This right here is the best workout video. I first got into it late in my elementary school years. Ten years later, I still do it a couple times a week. Instead of using bottles as weights as they do in the video, I usually use soup cans. I have problems in my joints, and I cannot do any excersizes that put too much stress on my joints. I love this video because you can do it in your living room in your pajamas. I love it because it is easy to catch on to and I think it is a lot of fun. It is real motivational on those days you just dont want to excersize, but you see how much fun the people are having in the video, singing along, dancing, cheering, counting out the steps....I do it on those days when you just dont want to get out of bed. I do it as a warmup before i go running. I do it when I have too much energy or when I really have nothing better to do. I do it the week of finals when I need a study break but need to keep moving so I dont fall asleep. Basically, I do it all the time. I always bring it to 'workout video night'. My friends and I get together and everyone brings workout videos. I always make everyone start with this video because not only is it my favorite, I think it is a classic because it uses oldies that every knows and are fun to dance to. This is the perfect video to start a new workout schedule or to add some fun to a current one. I highly recommend this tape to everyone, all ages and sizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard is the best!!!!!!!!!
Richard's workouts are very awesome, he is very incouraging and helpful. Just like most of his videos, he always has the everyday kinda person in them, all shapes and sizes, and thats a big incouragement. This video I think out of all the sweatin to the oldies, is the best, it's very energetic and makes you really sweat, but yet you feel really good after the workout, not like most that make you feel exasted! Richard is just the best! I know he is helping me through a tough time with my weight and i'm slimmin down wonderfully! Good luck to everyone and don't feel hopeless, keep it up and you'll get where you need to be!!! GODDESS BLESS!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun and motivating workout!!
Believe it, this tape is super!I have several workout tapes and get so ultra bored but not with this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars I always come back to this one
I'm actually just 22 yrs old, but I have struggled with my weight all of my life and everyday of it. My appreciation for Richard Simmons began when I was a young child. My mom loves him and when the original Sweatin to the oldies came about, she and her sisters passed it around. I always ended up "sweatin" along with my mom whenever she'd do it, but not to lose weight, just to have fun. Finally in junior high I began to realize I needed to make a serious change and I began doing Richard's tapes almost every night. Midway thru highschool, I had dropped almost 60 pounds and I credit him with a lot of my success. This specific video is tops. I don't like "Sweatin" 2 very much for whatever reason and the first one got old a long time ago, but somehow it stands that this one is a keeper for me.My favorite ditty is "I get around"...it's actually surprisingly vigorous for Richard! Because these videos aren't overloaded with tough moves, it's easier to do them daily, which to me is the healhiest idea. Light-moderate exercise each day until the weight comes off! GOOD LUCK! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Disco Sweat" your fat off!
hey everyone!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Workout Ever!!!
I LOVE this workout series. I have owned Disco Sweat from the first time it hit the TV order circuit when I was a kid and I loved doing it then because it was dance and it was music that I loved to listen to.When I found my OLD VHS version about a week ago I started working it again and was surprised that I remembered most of the moves. I think the wonderful thing about this workout is that there isn't a lot of talking and explaining during the routine. You just dance and have fun. I have videos where the instructor is blabing all the time and they stop to walk around and see what everyone else is doing. Richard gives encouragement, sings, & jokes but he never stops working with you. That's what I think makes a good workout. And to see so many other overweight no-names who are energized and excited just helps me be more determined to continue. I think this tape is the best balance between fun and work to date, and I have more than enough other programs in my own video library to go by. If you are looking for a good way to build your strength and endurance THIS IS IT!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Changes routines too fast
I've done a lot of dancing, but Richard changes the routines very quickly with very little explanation. This video is confusing and would not be good for your knees if you're doing it on a carpeting living room because there's a lot of twisting.I gave it away after only going half way through it.However, for an excellent strength training video, try his Blast and Tone! It's extremely well done.Good routine, very well explained, appropriate cautions/reforcements suggested.I look forward to using every other day. And, it's working! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best One Yet
I have most of Richard's workouts. This one is by far the best, but only if you have done aerobics before. If you're a beginner, start with his first one and work your way up. The routines are more complex, but more varied. Not boring, in other words. If you're more into advanced aerobics, this is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great when you get the hang of it!
This video is really great when you get the steps down.He is confusing at first, but after a few times you'll get it down.I have a herniated disk in my back so I haven't been able to go back to the Tae-Bo-type workouts quite yet. This video was wonderful for my back.It made me feel better, which (anyone with a bad back will tell you) is a miracle after aerobics. You aren't jolting your back at all.I add more intensity by incorporating larger movements into the workout. You don't have to follow him EXACTLY!3-0 out of 5 stars Never Knew What To Expect Next
I am not a beginner of video workouts. But I found this one confusing.By confusing I mean, I never knew the next step.I enjoyed the music but I was just jumping around and since Richard did not show nor tell you what kind of step you were going to be doing I could not get in sync with the tape.I prefer those videos that have more explicit instructions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it Love it
I would have to say this is one of the best aerobics videos out there.although it can be complicated sometimes, but isn't all aerobics like that.I love seeing various types of people doing the exercise with me.It makes me feel that if those people can do it, so I can I.Unlike other tapes where I feel I can't become like them.It has great songs and wonderful cool down time.So if your having a hard time catching up with other aerobics video, this is for you. This is a stepping stone for the high impact aerobics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for pre-teens or anyone with long term excersize needs
This is the best tape I own.I have been using it daily for 7 months and have dropped 78lbs so far (42lbs to go!).This tape does not try to exhaust you but instead target that 120 bpm range for the 25 minute of recommened exercise along with two target stretch songs and a warm up and cool down song (total 10 songs) it is perfect if your looking for something you can talk yourself into doing everyday. No way could I ever do an "exhaust-O" tape and keep with it for this long. The songs are upbeat and fun which I think kids would like too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this tape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite of all of Richard Simmons's tapes. The workout is fun, easy to follow and can be done with a lot of gusto for a solid, sweaty workout or (I blush to admit this) sort of half heartedly and I still will get my heart beating.Tiny breaks between every song give me just enough time to keep hydrated and the music, set and overall production values are high. There's that motivational bit at the end, where you can see how much people have lost and even some funny outtakes.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor and impatient
This video has good dance routines, as well as songs. Teh dance routine for "Windy", was the best. It made me feel good and free. That's the only part I like about the video.5-0 out of 5 stars Richard's Best!
I have just ordered a new copy of this video because I wore the old one out. I own almost every Richard Simmons video available, and this is still my all time favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
I was 260 lbs and had just begun the atkins diet last february when I bought this tape (exercise is a must for atkins). I hated to exercise, but I found this tape delightful! It is quite a taxing workout if you are out of shape or obese, but after a couple of tries it is the perfect balance of sweat and fun. Without Richard I probably would never have become the devoted exerciser I am now. After a couple of months you'll need to switch to a more difficult tape (I recommend any of kathy smith's cardio tapes and tammi lee webb's Cardio Blast), but Richard is the best way to ease into an exercise routine. ... Editorial Review

"Do you want to get toned to the bone?" shouts Richard Simmons. "Yes!" his class yells back. This half-hour video comes with a "Tonin' Cord," rubber tubing with handles, used for muscle strengthening in place of weights. First Simmons gives instruction for using the tubing correctly and effectively. Then he warms up his class, who happen to be instructors from his exercise studio, Slimmons. (It's great to see fit instructors that aren't all slender.) The toning class uses the tubing to create resistance to work the legs, chest, arms, shoulders, and back. The exercises are varied and effective (sometimes enabling you to work two muscle groups at once), and the tubing gives enough resistance to make the workout challenging. This is a different style than the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE OUT-OF-SHAPE LIKE ME!
The good thing about this tape is that he works all your body parts---legs, arms, back, abs, and chest. So you're getting a complete muscle toning workout.Unlike his faster paced, electrically charged aerobics workouts, he moves more slowly in this tape. The exercises are more concentrated on the different muscle groups.I haven't exercised in a while, but I could still keep up without feeling behind or out of breath. And, there's always that Richard Simmons energy and gentle tone of encouragement throughout the video to keep everyone going. As Richard says, "Don't Give Up!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Toning Workout !
I've been using this tape for about 5 months and think it's not only a great toning workout, but fun to use.My husband bought it a few years ago and when I wanted to lose weight and get toned up, I decided to give it a try - with great skepticism.I'll admit I was wrong - this is a great tape and Richard Simmons is inspirational, motivational and just funny.
5-0 out of 5 stars great workout--you can adjust intensity/difficulty, pace
I have been exercising for years and I believe this tape provides an intense strength/toning workout. Toning cords and resistance bands seem to be all the rage right now. It's easy to see why. Both the videotape and the cords are inexpensive and you can really feel it in your muscles after you're done. Plus, you can go at your own pace and adjust the cords to increase the difficulty once you pass the beginner stage. The only thing I wish the tape had were more exercises to work the glutes. It's very thorough on upper body and has a good deal of abdominal exercises that won't bore you. The time goes by quickly while doing this workout. Great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Richard Simmons exercise tape
This is by far my favorite Richard Simmons exercise tape.I started using this tape about a year ago and I still have fun with it today! The music is a blast and the dancing is fun. However, like others have said, it takes some time getting the routines down. But, once you do, you'll have so much fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Stunned
This workout was really fantastic. At first it went pretty fast; I had never done a Richard Simmons tape before. First time, I was a little slow to catch and perfect all the moves, but by the second time I had it almost had all of (the 50 minutes) down. Now, I'm stuck and can't stop doing this tape. The music is paced fairly consistantly, but I never got to tired and was always looking forward to the next song. The scenery also changed every few songs from a park, to some shops, a club, etc. All the people were alive and I wasn't exhausted by the end and had to do the tape again. Now I'm hooked and am trying all his other tapes/dvd's. I feel like dancing all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dance Your Pants Off Knocked My Socks Off!
I can't say enough about how thrilled I was to find the "Dance Your Pants Off" video among my collection.(I'd forgotten that I had it.)I've been exercising regularly (at least 5 days a week) for the past year using different videos, many of them Richard Simmons. When I came across this one and decided to try it, I was so excited, because I had so much fun with it, I couldn't wait to do it again. The steps and movements are easy and fun to do.Six weeks later, and I still look forward to exercising with this video! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars RICHARD'S BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!
The main reason I decided to go with Richard Simmons as opposed to ALL those many other fitness gurus out there is that he's been on the other side of bad health and obesity. He is FOR REAL and very encouraging when it comes to eating right, exercising, and relating to how hard it is to live healthy and to lose weight. His motto is always to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF and DON'T GIVE UP, one day at a time. When we see Richard today in 2006, he is high energy, electric, and talks fast. But in this 1994 tape, he looks less hyper, is more low key, and talks slower and softer. He understands and comes across as very sincere in his desire to help people to get on the road to good health through nutrition and exercise. The beginning part is basic food knowledge that everyone should know. The exercise part seems like Richard Simmons in slow motion. And he always includes people to exercise along with him in his videos who are overweight and dealing with the Battle of the Bulge too, so I don't feel alone.I'd rather exercise with these real folks than those skinny, shapely, muscular, model-looking aerobics instructors (most people don't look like them anyway). This tape is very inspiring and encouraging and has got to be the absolute bottom line easiest exercise video for the most out-of-shape person on the planet!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for out of shape and great for warm-up!!
This video is great for those who do not know where to begin. The first 15-20 minutes is a nutrition class and you meet some of richards clients who have lost a great deal of weight.the last 40 minutes is the actual aerobicportion. This is a very slow aerobic video so if you have been flustered in the past on keeping up you do not have to worry.I found the video not as advanced for me but I enjoy it because I am using it as my warm-up before I do my treadmill so I pop this video in and warm-up for 5-10 minutes then go to treadmill for my fatburning part.Richard is not crazy in this video he is quite tame in personality.Hope this helps!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for slow movers
If you have been a couch potatoe, this is the video to get you up and starting to move. It is very low impact. I have arthritis in both knees and hips, and this video lets me move and not be in pain. I would reccommend this to everyone. I had this tape a long time ago, and lost it when I moved. I was very happy to find it again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars HE'S A GOOD MOTIVATOR, BUT.....
this tape has a serious flaw in my opinion. i was very excited to get it after reading all the reviews here. no one mentioned that a large majority of the exercises are done out of the wheelchair lying on the floor. well, in my particular case, i cannot get out of the wheelchair down to the floor at all so this tape was a total waste of money for me. i am able to do about 5 minutes of exercises which are actually warm ups for the floor work and even they are all arm and neck work, very little leg work. it was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great workout
Someone should make a special award for Richard Simmons. What a sweetheart! Richard Simmons is able to bring fitness to all levels of abilities. This video has a great workout for those of us who aren't very ambulatory. It uses real people with real disabilities to show how each exercise is done. It's easier to follow than any other video I've tried. It's very upbeat and encouraging for those who have more than just weight to contend with.5-0 out of 5 stars Reach For Fitness
This video is great, but very low impact. It includes warming up the face, neck, shoulders, waist, legs and arms, and some simple aerobics. The second segment consists of floor exercises : sit-ups, push ups, prone lifts, andleg exercises. A good video for a disabled person not accustomed toexercising. Richard is excited and encouraging, and the video is fun to do.But for a younger, more athletic person, this video would be too simple. Iwas born with Spina Bifida and have decreased feeling from the waist down.I'm also 15, and really am unable to get a good workout with this video, although it is somewhat helpful. As I said, a great video for those whoneed a low-impact workout, or as a warm-up for the more serious disabledathlete. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweat Latin Style!
As a Hispanic, I thought the music could have been better but the video is still worth it. My mom has been a fan of Richard Simmons for yrs (and even met him!). I've been lacking on cardio and the gym at the University here is always packed from noon 'til midnight. I didn't know Richard Simmons had other tapes besides Sweatin' to the Oldies (still great!) and was thrilled to find this! The moves r hard to follow until u get the hang of it but I worked up a real sweat trying. The background dancers r great and they make Richard look like the odd white guy in a Latin club knowing the moves but without the natural Latin flair (which I suppose he is). I think I burned calories just laughing. It's definitely worth the buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a try if you are bored with excercise tapes!
I have just finished my first attempt with this routine.Sure, the dance steps were a bit hard to get down, so I just did my best to mimic the first time, but what fun. There are real dancers in Latin costume, and because the men were in pants and the women in dresses, I could see their legs well enough to see the dances. It was easier to learn than when I first tried the Richard Simmons Dance Your Pants Off.I had so much fun, that I didn't realize I was sweating until the cool down. The routine went fast too, because of the fun.Don't let the dance steps discourage you, just do your best and you'll be dancing away in no time. These dancing excercise tapes have been better than just a way to excercise.I have become better coordinated, more graceful, and learned dance steps, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ehh...definitely not Richard Simmons' best
I own several Richard Simmons tapes, and this is definitely my LEAST favorite. In some other reviews, people mentioned that the camera work was great.I strongly disagree with this. For some other type of video, it would be, but this is an EXERCISE video. You need to be able to see the people's feet/full body when they introduce a new step. However, the editor of this video often cuts to shots of people's muscles, faces, etc. at this critical time.I am usually very good at picking up aerobics moves, but I have trouble with this video because of the showy but poorly thought-out editing.Unlike others, I like the toning section (get Simmons cool weights!) but I agree that it is not enormously effective/strenuous.However, I think it helps to get your muscles ready for more effective toning later down the line. This section and the music are the main things I like about the video. However, if you are looking for an easier and more fun tape, get Disco Blast-Off, which I highly recommend. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The results show.
Tone and Sweat is more of an intense workout, but this one is good to start off with or alternate during the week. I like to start off with downtown, then uptown, then do 20-30 minutes of cardio from his Blast off-tape or whatever cardio tape I can find. I do this routine 5 days a week and my friends and family have noticed the difference! This workout really works and it's not difficult. The toning bands cost me $5 at Wal-Mart and I noticed from magazines that bands & cords seem to be really popular strengthening devices right now with the increased popularity of pilates & yoga. So, if you want a workout that's not quite as "dry" as pilates or yoga with muscle toning and more of the fun, this one's for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Toning Workout!!
Okay, I admit I'm a Richard Simmons nut, but I've lost 40 pounds with him so far and his tapes are a large reason why.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Get in Shape!
Although all of his tapes are excellent, I particularly like this two tape set.The first one, "Tonin' Uptown" is for your upper body, and the "Tonin' Downtown" is for...you guessed it, your lower body. The tapes run around 30-40 minutes each and are easy enough for a beginner to do.The music keeps you moving and let's face it...Richard Simmons is just pretty darn motivational! It's hard not to give the exercise routine your best effort, even though he's just on tape!Be forwarned--the toning rings are NOT included with the videos, but you can easily buy them at many discount stores. The students in his class could be you and me...they aren't all drop-dead gorgeous looking models, and I appreciate that.Instead of sitting at the computer, why don't you order this tape and get busy toning with Richard?? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Simmons: Platinum Sweat - Sweatin' for Seniors
I really like this video. It is a good aerobics video for older adults or those just starting to exercise. Richard Simmons makes the workout fun as in all his videos, but what I especially like about this video is it is only 25 minutes long.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for beginning seniors
This was released in 2001 and it's 25 minutes. There's a live band playing songs like Pennies from Heaven. It's a fun, easy workout for your light days. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and fairly short
I enjoyed the Mega Mix Blast-off because it was fairly short and great when you don't have much time. As with most Richard Simmons videos, the first time watching the tape is the hardest. This one has a quick weight workout at the end, so your muscles don't kill the next day and you still see great results. I think his videos are such a success because you become hooked and keep coming back for more. This this tape is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
I have used this video for about 6 months now.The music is up beat and fun and the moves - easy to learn.I enjoy doing it (unlike almost every other workout I have done over the years) and don't feel "dead" by the time it is over.I do feel like I have worked out, however and I have lost about 1/2 of the weight I wanted to.My only complaint is that there is no DVD version. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Workouts - No Music
Richard Simmons' The Stomach Formula can be difficult for beginners. Stick with it for a week, and you will not be sore at all. You may want to try doing the first seven-minute workout only during your first week or so. Each daily workout is repeated a second time on the video, and you can, if you try, work up to doing the whole thing twice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lose inches
This can be a killer tape at first until you get used to it, but once you get going, don't stop and don't skip a day if you can help it. If you have discipline, motivation, and really want to trim and firm your tummy, this is the tape for you. Each day is a different combination of exercises. For all 7 days, Richard does a set of exercises for the first half, then he repeats them for a second time. Take a quick pause if you have to in-between the sets, that's what the button is for, but do your best to get through the complete two sets. You won't regret it. I found it better to have a floor mat to protect your back. I was adjusting the exercises at first to get through them, but as I found myself getting stronger over the weeks, it was easier to do the two sets in a row as per the tape. I do my 7 minutes first thing in the morning, take a short break, and then go on to other aerobics or weight lifting exercises / tapes. This tape is very to the point and there is no irritating "chit-chat" - the majority of audio is strict instruction about the exercises. Definitely not a "fluffy" tape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Short blast-off
Being a Richard Simmons fan for the past 20 years, I was a little surprised that this video was only 30 minutes. The workout did nothing for my upper body and there were a lot of steps that will take time to learn. The routine is familiar, so if you are new to Richard, you will have some problems keeping up.Of all of my videos, this is my least favorite.STILL, Richard makes you smile and the exercise is painless and entertaining. His first are the best, though!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow, but fun when you get it!
As in his other videos, he hardly cues any of the moves, so you'd have to decide if you're ok with just following along a few times before picking up all the moves. This video is more vigorous then some of his others, I definitly worked up a sweat!I thought it was alot of fun, there were times when I couldn't stop smiling and actually LOL when we do the "fast runs" in Maniac and when we "honk" in Freeway of Love.4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!
I started using Richard Simmons videos years ago because I saw people like me, overweight, doing the moves. It was motivating because I figured if they could do it (some bigger than me) then I should be able to as well.I like this video. The music is my era, but if you have never done much cardio, this isn't the place the start. You definitely don't get much instruction, as was stated in another review, and the pace is much quicker than in some of his previous videos. One thing I like about all the Blast Off videos I've seen is that you often feel more like you're dancing than doing aerobics, so it's much more fun, and anything that can make working out fun gets a definite nod from me. ...
