4-0 out of 5 stars Charming movie that deserves to be on DVD
Come to the Stable is a charming movie that deserves to be on DVD.There is fine acting all around and Hollywood can relearn on how to depict religion in a positive light and tone from movies from the late 1940's.

No complicated story line: two nuns come to America , from France, to "answer a call".They come with nothing except belief in this "call".They have no plan and no money but...mysterious things begin to happen and 'the call" starts to take shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly as advertised - the greatest story ever retold
As a Southern Baptist fundamentalist, I don't generally like people fooling around with the Gospel - I'm a KJV-only kind of guy - but I think Cotton Patch Gospel is just fantastic. It moves the story of Jesus from Israel to the American South and retells the story in the Southern vernacular, but it still tells the Gospel story - and it does so in an immensely entertaining, surprisingly powerful way.The roots of this musical really extend back to man named Clarence Jordan, a Georgia native and social activist who translated the Gospels of Matthew and John into the Southern vernacular as a means to extend the reach of the Gospel story.Later, Tom Key (who stars in this production) wrote a play based on Jordan's Cotton Patch Gospels, and then Harry Chapin supplied the music that turned the play into a full-blown off-Broadway musical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spend some time with this movie
This is a marvelous work in every area of attempted endeavor: the music is rich, the jokes are humorous without detracting from the emotional impact of the performance, and the presentation of the core elements of Christian faith as presented in the gospel of Matthew are reasonably accurate and incredibly accessible. 1-0 out of 5 stars Cotton Patch need fertilized not sanitized

I LOVE this movie So much!I don't care what kind of trouble Mel Gibson is going thru in his personal life, this movie is really a masterpiece! It really gets across how much our precious Lord really did suffer for us!This film makes me want to cry, scream, but mostly it makes me want to CHEER!And I did! When I saw it in the theater, and it went off, I yelled "NO!!! DON'T GO OFF NOW!!!", but it did.At least we Christians know the rest of the story-WE WIN! PRAISE OUR LORD JESUS!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much beating
The movie is punctuated by unfortunate series of continuous beating. Any human being with massive strength would not have been able to sustain such number of flagellations using whips with pointed hooks and nails.

The one thing that can be said about this movie is it's "unforgettable". Like it or lump it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Myth, Mysticism, and Mischief
Joseph Campbell, in the last years of his life, still had a twinkle in his eyes. He speaks of myth -- the myths of many traditions -- from a lifetime of study, but he's not above chiding Bill Moyer or the audience to explore on their own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally insightful
This DVD series is excellent in terms of framing the existence of myth in the human experience, since the inception of recorded human stories, and how that directly translates into the evolution and development of all religions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the core of mythology can resurect your thinking
The Power of Myth transformed my thinking about mythology. It exposed me to a much finer way of thinking about religion and cultural mythology. It showed me how important myth is on so many levels in society, especially didactically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ma favourite
Unlike man's law, nearly 3,000 years ago, Moses was handed God's law -- the Ten Commandments. They are the expressions of the mind of God for his creations;they are the charter and guide of humanity, for there can be no humanity without the law. The Ten Commandments are as modern today as when they were first handed to Moses on Sinai since the struggle between the forces represented by Moses and those represented by Pharaoh is still being waged today. This movie questions whether man should be ruled by God's laws or whether man is to be ruled by the whims of man, Rameses. Is man the property of the State or is man a free soul under God? DeMille believed the message of The Ten Commandments had important personal, social, cultural, and political implications. But what is the real story behind The Ten Commandments? There are different, and sometimes contradictory, biblical accounts of Moses on the Mount. The historical context of these laws are: adultery, perjury, murder, theft, graven images, Sabbath laws, and coveting. What did they mean then? And do they mean anything today? Over the years, many laws, beliefs, and civilizations had rose and fell, but from ancient times to modern times, the definitions, the laws, and morality of the Ten Commandments have never changed. Which leads to my question. What would life be like if Moses never received these ten laws? Deville's final film as a director won the Oscar for best picture, best effects, best art direction, best cinematography, best costume design, best editing, and best sound. It is my favourite movie of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Katherine Orrison's DVD Commentary on the silent Ten Commandments
I wanted to just put this in for those who might be interested. In the DVD commentary on the silent Ten Commandments by Katherine Orrison, she says that the poem on which the female character (in the present day section)has written her "Goodbye" suicide note is probably important but she hasn't time to look it up. I did.It was relatively easy with a quick computer search. The poem that the note is written on is Helas by Oscar Wilde. She was quite correct that it had direct meaning for what was happening in the film at that moment. At this moment of greatest dispair and just before her return to religious belief, this is the poem used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember the Biblical Account- without the kids
This movie was very well done- one of the best by this company.Just remember the story and don't watch it with your kids because they were very accurate about what happened with Potiphar's wife and Joseph's garment being left behind as well as the fact that she had been continually tempting him prior to this encounter. Also, they kept to the historical feautures in that the women wore fine linen that is fairly see-through.The only scene I remember being unhappy with was the baker beating Joseph in the prison (Not Biblical) and it isn't 3 days till they are brought out, though it may be that long till the events are otherwise fulfilled. There were a few other minor changes like that but none damaged the historical perspective. Also, I wish they had included Judah's offer of protection to Benjamin and his, therefore, being the one to offer himself in Benjamin's place. They show one offer but I assumed that was the other brother who made the initial offer and was refused since it was right when they got back to their father, just as the Bible portrays it. ... If you like the Pink Panther cartoons, then you will like this one! The Pink Panther is cold and hungry on Christmas. He'll try anything to get a hot meal, but nothing seems to work out for him (as usual). There is no dialog, but I think this just enhances the special. I also really love the songs! Its pretty funny and enjoyable. One drawback is the animation is alot like the other pink panther cartoons (which are fairly old) (Think: "Yes Virgina, there is a Santa Claus") So its a bit crude and only a few colours are used (alot of the stuff seems overly pinky/orange). But its still great to watch and I love it! And the ending is cute too! Good for kids or any nostalgic adults. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. 5-0 out of 5 stars The True Vine.
One of the great works of the cinema - by far my favorite rendering of The Life on film - what I like most is the script's fidelity to Scripture and the magnificent and inspiring exposition of the Parables. This part of the film - the comprehensive depiction of Christ's Mission in spirit and meaning - through the context of the text of the Gospels - is to be found nowhere else in the genre - and assuages reception of the inevitably more interpretative scenes.Undoubtedly, in comparison with the recent effort of Mel Gibson, et al., the representation of the Passion looks somewhat tame. However, the comprehensive quality of the narrative here provides more than enough ballast to keep the viewer rapt.Continuing the comparison, it does take some time in the early frames get over the British accents. After all, the film was made in English for English speaking audiences. However, inspired acting up and down the line puts that one to bed fast. After few minutes of the genius of Peter Ustinov (in one of his finest moments) as Herod, stomping, ranting, raving mad in his political calculations - you forget the petty flaws.Needless to say, Robert Powell's career/performance as Jesus is vastly superior to any other on celluloid, and one of the supreme gestures in the history of media.Awesome.And Olivia Hussey's brilliant rendering of the Virgin Mary is, in my opinion, distinctly more affecting and profound than her celebrated rendering of Juliet, which, for whatever reasons, has played continuously to Amercan high school audiences for the past thirty years. In retrospect, and mostly due to what we see here, the modest and retiring Ms Hussey must be regarded as one of the greatest actresses of her era. This masterpiece, seen again and again, only gets more powerful, imparts more insight with each viewing.Having first viewed "Jesus of Nazareth" in it's premiere as one of the earliest T.V. mini-series back in the 1970's, I bear witness to the truth of the assertion that this film is one of the few that loses nothing to time and, characteristic of true classics, seems rather to gain.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Crucial Study
I was only 12 when I saw this the first time, and my father had to actully push me to watch it. Well, now I know more about the cross that parents are forced to carry for the sake of their children. As in his "Romeo and Juliet," "Taming of the Shrew," "Hamlet," and "Tea With Mussolini," Director Franco Zeffirelli's work is nothing short of phenomenal. In my opinion, one's study of the Bible is not complete until he or she has seen this movie. As in his other movies, Director Franco Zeffirelli gives us fascinating scenery and great background music. He also has actors who become the characters they are suppose to. (Some previous reviewers pointed out that as Jesus, Robert Powell never even blinks!) Interestingly, the movie starts a little before even the Gospels. (Mary and Joseph haven't made the formal arrangements yet.) The arguably best thing about this movie is that not only does it harmoniously combine the 4 Gospels, it actually adds a lot of educated speculation and turns briefly mentioned characters from the Gospels into fully 3d human beings. As Christians of today, we have hindsight, so we can easily fall into the trap of simply labeling characters weak, bad, etc. What this movie does is it removes hindsight and helps us understand the characters in the Bible more. Jesus was in fact bringing changes to established order, and naturally, despite his wonderful deeds, people could have divided feelings about him. Isaac Asimov said that the Jewish authorities had been taught that their religion placed emphasis on a strict adherence to the letter of the law, while Jesus' view was that it was alright to deviate from the written law if it meant doing a greater good. We often think of Caiaphas as the man who handed Jesus over to the Romans. But even the Anglican Bishop Richard Holloway said that Jesus called himself the son of God, and as the high priest, Caiaphas had to react to that. (We also tend to forget that Caiaphas had a job to keep order. And if he let things get out of hand, the Romans would take matters into their hands no matter how bloody things had to get.) We often just see Judas as the one who betrayed Christ. Well, was this out of malice? The Gospels say he hung himself afterwards. Certainly he wasn't happy about what he had done. As the movie suggests, he could very well have been tricked by Jesus' enemies into doing so: "If he really is the Messiah, God will not abandon him. And if he isn't, you will have saved Israel from another false prophet." Judas may very well have thought that he was bringing Jesus to a meeting where he could explain himself before the religious authorities. (King Richard III actually eliminated some of his enemies by putting them under the impression that they were just coming to a meeting and of course when they arrived, they were imprisoned and executed.) All in all, this is a phenomenal movie that not only harmoniously combines the 4 Gospels, but it also offers a lot of educated speculation that helps things make more sense. It also helps us to understand people we may have only seen through limited vision. Whether you are Roman Catholic, Anglo Catholic, Methodist, or any other Christian, this movie is an essential study.

4-0 out of 5 stars the last temptation of Christ within you
I've never read the novel this movie is based on, but I've seen the movie a couple of times. I honestly don't understand why so many Christians are upset about it. Here in Sweden, some fundamentalist group always cry "Provocation" and "Conspiracy" whenever the movie is re-run on television, especially if it's close to Easter. I don't see the movie as anti-Christ or anti-Christian. Rather, I see it as a allegory of man's spiritual seekership. The "Jesus" of the movie is a symbol for each of us. Jesus is called by God. He has doubts. He even refuses. On the cross, he feels abandoned, perhaps betrayed, by God: "Why hast thou forsaken me?". The Devil sees his chance and tempts him. But, finally, Jesus sees through the temptations, "returns" to the cross, and dies victoriously, as the true Son of God: "It is accomplished".
4-0 out of 5 stars "Tempted In Every Way, Just As We Are"
St Paul described Jesus as being "one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin" (Hebrews 4v15). "The Last Temptation of Christ", a film based on the book by Nikos Kazanantzakis, is an exploration of such verses of the Bible, I think. It shows a Jesus who is tempted in pretty much every way imaginable, in the mind and in reality, who is vulnerable, who learns as he goes, and yet still doesn't sin, still preaches love and God's kingdom with confidence, and still fulfils his purpose. For me, it's one of the most interesting interpretations of Jesus life, around, and is definitely one of my favorites.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
This film from Martin Scorsese surpasses all other cinematic re-tellings of Christ's life. To discuss this movie, however, one can't avoid the question of the controversy that to this day surrounds it. Fundamentalist Christians deemed the film blasphemous before they even saw it, due to its portrayal of Jesus as equally God and man. This idea, though, is firmly placed within the Bible and creates a three-dimensional character out of Jesus (as opposed to the two-dimensional Jesus in The Passion of the Christ). Here, Jesus is wholly divine and wholly man, confused and all-knowing. He is the ultimate paradox. Jesus's conquering of temptation and his triumph is inspiring. While Scorsese worked under a very limited budget (and it is obvious in many instances), the film is still a masterpiece, thanks in no small part to Peter Gabriel's mesmerizing score. This is one of Scorsese's absolute best and one of the best films of the 1980s. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but not a classic
As a big fan of the first two plays in this series, "The House Without A Christmas Tree" and "The Holiday Treasure", I regret to say that I found the"The Easter Promise" to be not quite on the same high level as the former two in terms of substance. The lovely and talented Miss Jean Simmons is a welcome addition to the exceptional trio of Mildred Natwick, Jason Robards, and Lisa Lucas but I feel the story is not as moving and powerful. It's still more rewarding and enjoyablefamily fare than the average TV movie just not "great" or a "classic" in my opinion.

This Sundance Festival sensation has attracted attention because of its jarring images of Amish kids immersed in debauchery: plain-dressed girls in white bonnets slugging back beers and flicking ashes from their cigarettes, boys passing out in the back of pickups after all-night parties, even Amish teens in bed together. But like a good drama, it's the characters themselves and their heartbreaking dilemma that linger in the mind. In the Amish vernacular, "Devil's Playground" refers to the "English" or outside world. The protected teens are suddenly thrust into this world upon their 16th birthday as they begin "Rumspringa," a period during which they decide whether to join the church as adults. Crystallizing this predicament is the 73-minute documentary's most compelling figure, 18-year-old Faron, a preacher's son fighting drug addiction. His earnest intent to return to the church and astonishing articulateness makes his misadventures in the drug underworld and penal system undeniably poignant. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An important documentary of a seldom seen way of life.
I visited simular churches in Lancaster Co Pa,and Elkhart ,Indiana.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative Yet Disturbing
Sex, drugs, heavy metal/rap music, Nintendo. These are not things one would normally associate with the Amish, but there you go, it's time to learn about DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND
5-0 out of 5 stars Actually very interesting no matter what your religious affiliation
This documentary answers the question that most of us not raised in constrictive religious homes ask about the very (usually rightwing) religious - do these people ever misbehave without severe trauma? Apparently the Amish let their kids misbehave for a great length of time in order to show them how empty the secular world is. As one of the characters puts it towards the end "most Amish see Rumspringa as their inoculation against the secular lifestyle."

5-0 out of 5 stars Special place in our hearts for this Veggie!!
We love 'Lyle'.It is such a tenderhearted tale, and I never get tired of seeing this with my children.I love the lessons it teaches. This is one of our favorite all-time Veggie Tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars A show starring Junior? What could be better?
The first part of the show is the Shakespeare play "Omlet".This is another great version of a literary classic. The classic song is "Larry's High Silk Hat", which features classic music. Then is the lost play by Gilbert and Sullivan, "Lyle, the Kindly Viking".It stars Junior Asparagus.I love him! That's part of what makes this story funny. What also makes it funny is the constant presence of Bob and Larry. One of their best yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A laugh out loud, even for adults
Junior Asparagus is by far my favorite veggie, and he is featured in this cute take on "generosity". Larry the cucumber is also featured with his dry wit and eyebrow-raising jokes. Even my stalwart husband got a laugh out of this cute DVD. ... Read more

    Thank you.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks real emotion and heart
I expected alot more from Richard Harris. He was very stiff and it was hard to warm to his portrayal of Abraham. Also, there wasn't enough vocal input from God, expecially since his promises to Abraham and indeed the world should be center stage and offer the viewer a wholistic picture of the first covenant. There were some omissions and scenes out of order from the bible. I was somewhat annoyed that the movie had God saying that Sarai's name means Princess and that he would change it to Sarah which means Queen. This is not true!! In Hebrew Sarah means princess. Such apparently small mistakes really withdraw the films credability.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Abraham's Patience
This is a Wonderful movie, I LOVE IT!!!!!! I recommend it to anyone. It encourages others in a similar situation. The characters were really good. Abraham in the movie was a perfect Abraham. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Why do they need words for?
"The Passion of Joan of Arc" is a silent film in black and white, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968). It is not exactly the kind of movie I usually rent, but it is excellent, and I certainly don't regret having watched it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best movie ever made.Period.
Even after seeing this film over 20 times it still has an enormous emotinal impact on the viewer. It's hard to feel like you are watching a movie because of the performance of Maria Falconetti.I once read a reviewer call this the best single job of acting in a movie, wich I could not believe having seen many movies in my life.I'm here to tell you that this is the greatest acting I have seen. The changes in expressions on her face and eyes are so devastating Maria Falconetti creates a Joan of Arc you will never forget. The look in her eyes will remain with you for days after.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful film, but a historical mess
I agree with all the reviewers regarding the beauty of this film.It is indeed stunning to behold.Nonetheless, I find it extremely ftrustrating that most works about Joan D'Arc change history and the facts about her character for "artistic merit." Indeed, her story is even more amazing than any film has dared to approach.Though this film was definately a better portrayel of her than the awful "the Messenger," it is still nothing like the real Joan. The film (obviously in attempt to pull emotion) portrays her as weepy and in constant dismay. The documents of the trial however indicate she is clever, charismatic, unwilling to compromise, and unbending in her mission and principles.Would you expect anything less from a 17 year old girl who is able to convince sexist medieval France to let her lead armies?Come on!In fact, she was so rock solid, she kept humilating the judges and theologians. At a trial many years previous a judge was so impresed with her, he called her a "marvelous child."The second major problem is the major historical mistakes. She was not put on trial by Orthodox theologians or the Roman Catholic Church, as many people mistakenly believe. She was put on trial by a specific group of theologians that were loyal to the British and one in particular that wanted the seat of an Archbishop. They did NOT want Rome to know about the trial and kept it secret from Rome because they knew she would be deemed innocent.Sure, they were Catholics, but they were renegade Catholics operating outside of the church (which was why Rome negated her excommunication only within a few decades of the trials).Indeed, Joan had asked to go to Rome to be put on trial because the Pope would surely have found her innocent.Furthermore, the Church had actually given permission for her to dress like a man. Most importantly, these unloyal theologians did not really consider her to be a "witch."All the charges were trumped up, mainly because this one theologian wanted the seat of the Archbishop.Messy, messy, messy.Directors and writers are truly narcissistic for thinking they can do a better job of telling her story, rather than relying on the truth (which is infinately more amazing).Somebody please do Joan justice!! ...
