5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-over workout
This tape is excellent. I really appreciate the instructor's frequent tips and reminders about alignment to help prevent injury. She's obviously very experienced and knows her stuff. The workout itself is great--covers the whole body, and you'll feel toned and tightened all over.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a GREATworkout
I really like this instructor and will look at some of the other videos she has to offer. But I found that I did not get a real good workout. She seemed to jump from one exercise to the other without really working the muscles. For instance, when she worked the arms etc, she only did 5 reps. Not enough to feel the burn. It's definitely a beginners workout.I like her calm voice and soft music in the background.Fantastic instructor!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Poor Man's Reformer - A Nice Intermediate Variation
Once you've tired of Pilates floor exercizes (I like "Pilates for Dummies" to start with and there are int. & adv. tapes in the Stott series) there are basically 2 inexpensive pieces of equipment you can purchase to spice up your Pilates routine - a ring and a band. Of the two, the band is less expensive (a quality one is less than the price of a video), it stores easily in your sock drawer and adds variety to your workout.Read more

Editorial Review

This Pilates mat work video emphasizing "concentration, control, centering, precision, flowing movement, and breathing" is an introduction to thebasic 18 exercises that are the foundation of Pilates. The unidentified instructor is a disembodied, guiding voice giving instructions calmly, explaining technique, but without much warmth or motivation. She guides you through a simplified version of each move, then the goal level, with different demonstrators performing the moves. If you use the video as a workout, keep the remote by your side, because you'll have to pause the video to perform the specified number of repetitions on each side. The instructor explains the technique, but doesn't wait for the demonstrator to complete both sides. This video would be a useful adjunct to a Pilates program so that you're reminded what to practice and how to do the moves correctly, but it's less likely to satisfy youas a total program in itself. If you're taking Pilates at a studio, the video also shows shots of how each exercise is performed using the Pilates equipment. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilates Classical Matwork Instructional Video
This video is misnamed. It should really be called a Pilates classical matwork instructional video. It is worth it's weight in gold for anybody trying to find out how to correctly perform the basic 18 exercises that are the foundation of Pilatesmatwork as taught originally by Joseph Pilates. Hence, this is NOT a follow alongvideo. Since training by a certified Pilates instructor can be very expensive, this video will be invaluable to anyone serious about their Pilates matwork. I found expert instruction by only one person, very easy to follow, and precisely what I wanted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not buy this video
Not only is it more surreal than anything but its cheaply made.If anything its more of a science fiction exercise video simply because the people are exercising like robots and there is a lady talking to close to a microphone over what you can only imagine is an interplanetary space ship.Pilates is a great way to balance your workout but not in this video attempt.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Clinical" is the adjective of choice here
This is pretty painful to watch. It is more instructional than "follow along" in format but that's not why it's painful. The exercises are demonstrated by three or four different individuals, accompanied by a voice-over (slow and droning, unfortunately).Low "fun" factor and something I wouldn't watch again.I'd recommend Jennifer Kries' "Precision Toning" for an intro to Pilates that's more enjoyable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hurts my hands
Good instructions during workout- reminds you to breathe correctly. However, I couldn't complete the workout because holding the bands all the time hurt my hands. My stomach was sore the next day so it did do something. If you don't have strong hands, you might want to consider something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful video
I have always been an admirer for Moira Stott. She gives very clear instructions with a calm and cool voice which is never irritating.I bought this video mainly as a trial for the reformer exercises (the flex band offers resistance similar to the reformer) and I was not disappointed. The exercises here were challenging and with resistance brought by the flex band, I felt and saw results right away.Furthermore, I think using the flex band kept my movements stable and smooth. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather be big than doing this chaotic routine
(disclaimer: I am NOT big, I am actually quite trim but I'd like to keep it that way and therefore I use home workout tapes in between gym sessions.)
4-0 out of 5 stars A good mix of dance and Pilates
Once again, Liz Gillies draws on her extensive dance and Pilates background to deliver an effective, unique workout.5-0 out of 5 stars great connection to mat!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good start for novices, but you'd outgrow it quickly
I've been practicing Pilates for years and I've heard about this tape.In general, I'm not a fan of Pilates "parts" workouts because I think it's antithetical to the Pilates philosophy, which is that every movement in the system should work the entire body in some way. However, I've heard many people rave about this tape, and since I hurt my ankle recently and am looking for "floorwork", I gave it a try.
5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing Classic Pilates Workout
This is an excellent place for beginners to introduce themselves to Pilates. It is also a relaxing workout for intermediate Pilates students. Kathy Smith creates a beautiful caring environment with a garden patio and beautiful mat colors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Pilates workout for targeting the lower body
In this video, Kathy Smith offers a very good Pilates workout which specifically targets the lower body. She begins with a 6-minute instructional section which addresses fundamentals of Pilates. In this section, Kathy provides excellent descriptions of basic Pilates concepts such as breathing techniques; the c-curve, pelvic scoop, and neutral spine alignments; engaging the hamstrings; and the Pilates powerhouse. This is a great introduction if you have never done Pilates before, but once you are familiar with Pilates principles, you can skip over this section.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for back strengthening with minimal effort
I am a seamstress and I hate to exercise.I have had fairly chronic headaches, back and neck pain and stiffness for years. This back workout takes only 20 minutes to do and is not difficult at all.In fact, it is quite relaxing at the end of the day.It has helped strengthen and loosen up my back and neck better than anything I have ever tried. It has reduced the frequency of headaches by 75%.My chiropractor is thrilled at the results, too.I have a hard time doing regular pilates because I am so out of shape, but I have no trouble doing these and have stuck with them for over a year.I recommend them without reservation to anyone who needs to improve their back health. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review
I am not rating this movie. I am just telling you what I think about it from a person in the movie. It was a great expreiance. I know that most children would not like to do this as a stedy routine. I know that I didn't. It is fun if you do it with a bunch of friends. I am now 15 years old. I was "stott's" oldest daughter. The review before mine was good. I just want to say Merrithew is her last name. I know that you might think I am her daughter and I am trying to sell this product. but I really belive that it is a great way to get an active lifestyle for younger chilren. It makes you feel so happy once you are done!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for children's workouts (with some modifications)
This 32 minute videotape is more of a modified Pilates routine for children than introduction to the Pilates basics. The emphasis here, as stated in the title, is on having fun with the movements, not working on Pilates principles, form or pre-movements.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Unique full body toning workout
First of all, I want to note that this video was originally marketed without "Pilates" in the title; my cover simply says "Core Essentials."I'm not sure why Pilates was added in--as others have said, this is definitely not a Pilates workout.Rather, it is a full-body toning workout similar to the first half of one of Karen's early videos, Streamline Fitness.4-0 out of 5 stars Great for your torso, but it's not Pilates
Karen Voight is a new favorite.I find her choreography innovative and her instructions precise and clear. On top of that, she or someone who works for her has great marketing sense.Yeah, I can see why something with a focus on the core would be marketed as "Pilates-based", but it's not.And actually, I believe the original title of this was "Body Reform: Core Essentials".2-0 out of 5 stars "Light Weight " workout for anyone already in shape
I recently purchased this video along with Karen's Abdominals and Back.I have tried them both.Contrary to other reviews I found the instructions and moves easy to follow, but as a 55 year old women who works out an hour almost everyday - aerobics and strength training, I found these two tapes to be almost too easy.I used the abs and back tape this AM and felt stretched afterward but sort of guilty - like I didn't work out. These would be good for relieving stress as an end of the day workout - like yoga.I have quite a few of The Firm tapes, Cardio Split, Super Cardio, Super Sculpting, Cardio Burn, all the "Tough" tapes and several of the "Total Body" tapes, which incorporate a lot of toning and pilates like core strengthening and I feel they do more for me when I only have an hour or so a day to devote to a workout. The Firm tapes are good because as you improve you can add heavier weights, ankle weights and increase the challenge.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set & great results
I do this DVD at least 2 days a week and at first I thought it was relatively easy, but as I continue to do it, I've learned how to breath, and really control my motions and moves.I have seen great results and my core continues to get stronger.I am pretty picky about how instructors queu and Ana has an excellent way of ensuring you are qeued at the right time.I am now looking for another band workout to come out.I hope she'll have another one soon!Try it.This is for all levels!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely flowing Pilates workout for any time of day
Ana Caban's P.M. Pilates is designed as an evening Pilates routine to help you wind down and de-stress at the end of the day. It's perfect for this purpose (although a bit too strenuous to be used right before bedtime), but it would also serve well as an energizing routine in the a.m. or almost any time. The workout is filmed against a rocky, oceanside backdrop, and the soundtrack consists of soft, soothing piano music.
1-0 out of 5 stars Going Downhill FAST
I don't know what happened to the quality of videos at Living Arts. The pilates series is really way below standard-- compared to the yoga videos.I have the beginning mat series with Ana and I returned both of them because of the inadequate instruction and low quality production.READ THE REVIEWS for these other videos before buying this one!Don't be fooled like me.Some other pilates videos I would recommend are Denise Austin's Pilates for Every Body, Suzanne Deason's pilates for weight loss (ignore the title, it is more challenging and complete then the ones by Ana-- and gives me some hope for Living Arts).Honestly speaking though to get a total body workout that brings together mind and body stick with yoga-- it's as good as it gets.Pilates is good if you use the machines, on the mat it basically touches on portions of what yoga covers more completely. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A light Pilates workout for the lower body
If you are relatively new to Pilates and looking for a lower body workout that is not too challenging, this video might be for you. Prior to the workout, instructor Jillian Hessel spends a few minutes introducing Pilates and going through a brief reivew of posture principles. The workout begins with some nice foot a leg stretches while lying on your back. You then perform some of the tradition Pilates mat exercises, doing only those that focus mainly on the legs such as leg circles and bicycle. There also are some more unique moves such as opening and closing the legs in a stradle position. Next comes the Pilates side kick series, including exercises that focus on both the outer and the inner thighs; there are also a few movements performed lying face down to work the back of the legs. The workout ends with a short standing balance segment, coming in at just under 29 minutes. This workout wasn't very challenging, but if you enjoyed the thighs segment from Crunch Pick Your Spot Pilates, you will probably enjoy this video as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother with This One
It is less than a 25 minute "workout". Most of the routine consists of old standards from high school gym class, like bicycling and leg lifts. There is no incentive for me to do this workout again-the instructor's legs are not toned at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very light work out
I agree with the review that only gave it one star. It is pretty light for a 25 minutes workout DVD. If you are new to Pilates, you should pick a real Pilates entry level DVD such as Pilates for Dummies. If you are not new to Pilates, you would find this DVD to be too easy and not a complete work out. I would recommend the videos made by Anna Caban (Pilates Intermediate Mat Workout). I give it two stars because I use this video as a supplement to my workout routines from time to time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pilates Video I've run into
I have bought several Pilates videos including Jennifer Kreis's Precision Toning, The Living Arts videos with Ana Caban, etc and this one has the explanations as to what you are supposed to be doing with every part of your body.I can finally do a roll-up smoothly. I would highly recommend this video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly like the class
I take a fabulous Pilates class 2x per week by a Stott certified trainer who sold me this tape.Although the sound is not great and the pace seems slow the exercises and direction are identical to my very expensive class.I love this tape since it helps me remember the names of the exercises, encourages proper form and shows various ways to increase the difficulty of each move. The first few times I did the tape I did not have a fitness circle and it did not make any difference.Other Pilates books have you use a firm pillow between your legs for the exact same exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't be turned off!
Yes, this tape is not exciting. But when you master the moves, you can go on to the next tape, Intermediate Matwork, in which the sound quality, pace, and instructions are better.I am now doing the Intermediate andlove it, but could never have done it without the Beginning tape! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great New Method Program!
I have become a big fan of the New Method programs over the past few months. For almost 10 years I've done Yoga daily and for about the past year have added Pilates before doing my Yoga practice. I have a very large collection of Yoga programs (over 100) and a growing number of Pilates and "Pilates based" programs. I would consider these New Method 20/20 programs to be "Pilates based" rather than strict Pilates.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Stretching Intro To Pilates and Yoga
I am Maureen, a 40 year old woman who has been pretty sedentary although never overweight. This tape is perfect for me to start stretching out those shrinking muscles of mine and work towards strength and flexiblity. Very nice pace and nice drum music. Though they switch quickly from floor excercises to standing excercises so you have to be ready with a blanket or mat to roll out quickly on the floor. One tip...when I first started, the excercises seemed so easy I thought "wow, I'm a natural" then after about a week I decided to put a mirror out to watch my form and the excercises got much harder. I was "breaking in the mid section" over and over on almost every excercise. Once you dicipline yourself with the mirror not to break in the mid section while doing the movements, they aren't so simple any more. And on the floor excercises like the scissors, I was really bending my knees badly, Once I used the mirror and learned to keep the knees straight, I got A LOT more out of the excercises. My stomach muscles are developing definition in only about a month. I really like it. I do the 1st workout one day and the 2nd workout the next day which keeps me from getting bored. In 4 months or so I hope to be able to go through both workouts, in correct form without tiring. Here's to your health!

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it
