The legendary distance runner Steve Prefontaine blazed across tracks and into America's consciousness before meeting a tragic death in an auto accident at the age of 24.In this tribute to "Pre," narrated by writer Ken Kesey, a number of his contemporaries speak movingly of him as an athlete and a person. After setting high school running records in his native Oregon, Prefontaine went on to the University of Oregon, where as a freshman he began to dominate the American track scene and appeared on the cover of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This was my favorite of the (I believe?) three Prefontaine movies out there. "Without Limits" and "Prefontaine" are both good Hollywood/drame type movies, and while all three stay true to Pre's story, "Fire on the Track" is much more moving. It tells the story documentary-style with real footage and interviews with those who knew Pre best, tied together with strong narration and driven ultimately by the raw story of Prefontaine. If you're a runner and looking for motivation, or a runner/non-runner looking to learn about one of the greatest American athletes of all time, look no further than to "Fire on the Track."

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I highly recommend this movie to ANYONE who needs inspiration or motivation. Perhaps you are in sales and need a little extra drive to get over the rejection of a lost sale, etc. This movie will tell you to never quit no matter what your odds.

2-0 out of 5 stars almost as exciting as watching golf on tv
ok, i have an admission to make: i have always said this is one of the most boring movies ever made, but i never actually saw it til now. not that i didnt pay my way into the theater because i did. but i fell asleep after 20 minutes or so and never actually SAW the movie. now i have. worse movies have won the oscar: "gandhi", "kramer vs kramer", "the english patient", maybe a few more. but i dont think theres ever been a duller movie. that said, i gave it 2 stars instead of one to honor the all-too-brief shots of dennis christopher who was dreamycreamy back then, but is only on screen about 5 minutes. frankly, i found the two "heroes" to be a pair of self-centered religious zealots, and prigs to boot. and god, i loathe that vangelis music that played constantly for the decade after the movies release. my gawd, this thing beat "reds" for a best picture oscar?!?!? maybe i shall go back and take away the second star ...

    5-0 out of 5 stars Wide-Screen Finally!
Before this wide-screen edition of CHARIOTS OF FIRE was released, I was extremely reluctant to recommend buying this DVD. Now that it is out, and that the sound has been made crisper, there is nothing that should prevent anyone from buying this product.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chariots of Fire
What an amazing film! This is the story of a real olympics and the participants who represented Great Britain in track. The main characters are really well developed and include Abraham who is attending Cambridge University and besides being a stellar student of law has been graced with the ability to sprint. He is Hebrew in a Christian world son to a financier. He enrolls a coach named Mr. Masanbini who admits he can't put in what god left out but none the less agrees to train the young Ben.

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Read more

My daughters have grown up watching this video, sometimes every day!Grandma said that if she never had to watch it again it would be fine with her...guess we overdid it.When I hear the music of the competitions I stop what I'm doing to watch that part again.Truly a classic and family favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love a love story ...
If you are a G&G fan and you haven't seen this, it is a must see.If you have never heard of Gordeeva & Grinkov - watch it and you will fall in love with them.Based on Katia Gordeeva's book about her life with her late husband (also a must-read) it features extensive footage of the couple and interviews with Katia and only a few hyper-cheesy "flash back" re-enactments.It is more a docu-drama than a movie. Now, almost 10 years after Sergei's death, with Katia remarried and expanding her family, it is still a beautiful movie to watch and enjoy. And if you have never experienced G&G you are missing the greatest pair ever to take the ice. This movie is a good way to "get to know" them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, heartwarming...truly one of my all time favorite films...
`Cool Runnings' is one of those movies I can watch over and over again and never get sick of it.Based on a true story that is both touching and inspirational, Jon Turteltaub does a magnificent job of infusing enough humor and wit into this script to make it one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen. The story is about a young group of Jamaicans who are vying for a way to the Olympics.Derice Bannock (Leon) has dreamed of running in the Olympics all his life. His father was a famous Olympic runner and he dreamed of doing the same.Junior Bevil (Lewis) lives under the strict watch of his wealthy father who humors Junior's fantasy about running in the Olympics but doesn't wholeheartedly support it.And then we have Yul Brenner (Yoba) who lacks a good education but makes up for that with brute strength and arrogance. On the day of the tryouts Junior takes a fall and trips up Yul and Derice ending all of their chances to make it to the Olympics.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, inspiring movie
I just love Cool Runnings, it's the funniest and most heartwarming comedy I know, I'm glad I own it on DVD because I have watched it many times, and every time it makes me laugh and I have to admit I usually shed a few tears at the end because it is so moving. And it's a great family movie - I even know 2-year-olds who watched it and enjoyed it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Comedy Classic !
This is one of my favorite movies. It all starts out with a Jamaican man by the name of Derice Bannok, whose father was a famous Jamaican runner in the Summer Olympics. Derice practices running and could run just as fast as his father, but at the try-outs for the Olympics, he gets tripped and doesn't make it. But he doesn't give up there! He goes to the president of the Department of the Jamaican Olympic Team, and tries to get him to re-run the race, but he says no. Derice still wants to go to the Olympics, so, he tries to get together the first Jamaican Bobsled team. He tries to find Irving Blitzer, a man who used to be on the American Bobsled team, but got kicked out for cheating and went to Jamaica to get away from Bobsledding. Mr. Blitzer keeps refusing Derices offer, but then finally agrees to coach his team. I cant' tell you anymore because I don't want to spoil it for you. This movie is an instant comedy classic that anybody would love, and, it has great music, plus, it's based on a true story so it's very realistic. Five stars from me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practically purrrrrrrfect in every way....
I recently purchased this video because the one I once owned from these games,(taped from tv), was taken to the dump, by mistake, but not by me!!! I hasten to add. I live in the UK and it is impossible to buy these videos here, the only ones we can generally get are the Torvill & Dean tapes....I was delighted to be able to purchase this through Amazon and I bought it primarily for the Tara Lipinsky programme(unforgettable!)....A couple of previous reviewers noted their irritation at the Scott Hamilton commentary, but for me it was the opposite, I found it enhanced my viewing of the tape, I like to hear the commentators getting caught up in the moment and expressing their joy or otherwise at the programmes.I thought this tape was excellent, very enjoyable from beginning to end, with plenty of highlights, and although we get a limited number of full programmes the main one was there for me, and the very reasonable price I paid for the tape and shipment to the UK was well worth Tara's programme alone..I love figure skating and I have many competition tapes which I have taped from tv...unfortunately, it is a minority sport here and not held in the same high regard that it is in the USA and Canada....so I say for anyone thinking of purchasing it, go ahead, I found it great value for money.

3-0 out of 5 stars would be better if scott would have kept quiet
i taped eevrything during the actual olympics, but i like to purchase videos like this because sometimes they cut the commentary out which is what i would have enjoyed on this tape. scott hamilton although he may be agreat skater is so annoying in this video that everytime he screached overa clean jump by tara, it made me angry. what i didnt like was that scottcontradicted hismelf several times in this video and it was obvious he hadfavorites. if you are a fan of michelle & tara and missed theirprograms this tape provides what u r looking for :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me...
I thought this video was a great taste of the Olympics. It had MK's and TL's both short and long programs and Illia Kuliks, Todd eldgredge(cut the middle out), Elvis Stoyko(cut the middle out), and Phillep Candeloro. Theonly thing i didnt like, was that Scott H. hosted and commented and ithought that it was the MOST annoying commenting i've ever heard. This extraordinarily sweet--but thankfully not sappy--film proves once and for all that Cary Grant was devastating, period. Young, mature, or in his golden years. The reason Ian Fleming modeled James Bond after Grant is startlingly clear. Grant was 62 when this film, set during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was made. Grant plays Sir William Rutland, who is caught in the crowded rush--without a place to stay. He finds himself subletting an apartment along with Christine Easton (Samantha Eggar), who's in town to be near her fiancé, a British diplomat. Also sharing their tight quarters is Olympic competitor Steve Davis (Jim Hutton), who's evasive about his sport. Soon Sir William, a distinguished businessman, finds himself playing Cupid to his young housemates. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "I wouldn't know what to do in the bathroom all day!"
In 1966, Cary Grant retired from his distinguished 34-year acting career after starring in the lighthearted romantic comedy "Walk, Don't Run".Set in Tokyo, Japan during the 1964 Olympics, Sir William Rutland (Cary Grant, 1904-1986), a very wealthy British industrialist, arrived in Tokyo two days ahead of schedule and the lavish Okura Hotel (where he is supposed to stay) has no rooms available. In fact, the Olympics have placed a giant "no vacancy" sign across the entire city of Tokyo.Frustrated, William goes to the British Embassy to seek out assistance in locating a room. There, he is seen by the snobbish & indifferent Julius P. Haversack (John Standing) whose attitude changes towards Sir William upon discovering who Sir William is.Sir William wanders out of Mr. Haversack's office and finds a bulletin board with a advertisement to share an apartment.Desperate to have a place to sleep, Sir William grabs the advertisement and travels to its address.Upon arriving, the woman who rents the apartment, Christine Easton (Samantha Eggar), doesn't want to share her apartment with a man, but is unable to convince Sir William to leave and reluctantly allows him to stay. The following day, while Sir William is conducting business with a Japanese company, he comes across an American busily taking pictures and making notes about the building's architecture. The American, Steve Davis (Jim Hutton, 1934-1979), is part of the American Olympic team, but is reluctant to discuss which event he is in.Also, insufficient room in the Olympics' housing has left Steve homeless, so he immediately latches upon Sir William to stay with him.Of course, Miss Easton is not particularly happy to discover that Sir William has sublet his part of the apartment, but again very reluctantly lets Steve stay as well.Of course, this creates even more havoc for everyone to try and use the apartment's single bathroom.Over the course of the film, it is revealed that Miss Easton is engaged to the unpleasant Mr. Haversack at the British Embassy, but Sir William would like to see the single Steve woo Miss Easton instead.
3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely lightweight romantic-comedy
I'm just old enough to remember the minor controversy that was stirred up by the allegedly "risque" premise of the 70's TV show "Three's Company."It's hard to believe that once upon a time the idea of unmarried men and women simply sharing living arrangements together was supposed to be shocking. If you keep that dated sentiment in mind while watching "Walk, Don't Run" then you might be able to understand why this this movie was even made.5-0 out of 5 stars The last movie of Cary Grant

As far as ice-skating movies go (or those that prominently feature the cold-bladed sport), this romantic movie is one of the best, thanks to utterly charming performances by underrated actors D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. The couple play, respectively, a washed-up hockey player and a prima-donna skater who end up in doubles figure skating together at the Winter Olympics. Of course, the mismatched pair fall in love. In between, there's a lot of verbal sparring, talk of toe picks, and surprisingly skillful directing by Paul Michael Glaser (Read more

I remember seeing this movie years ago in college and have continued to like it ever since. The movie starts off at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeny) is a talented hockey player and Kate Mosley (Moira Kelly) is a pairs figure skater. Both have mishaps during their big moments, Doug suffering a career ending injury and Kate falling during her performace and failing to meet her own expectations.

I have always been a fan.I really can't say much more.If you find a picture you can watch over and over again and it still remains fresh and new then there is no other option than to own that picture until you wear out the DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Odd Couple" on ice...
Just as "Ice Castles" had inspired a generation of ice-skaters in the late-70s', in 1992 the romantic comedy THE CUTTING EDGE created a similar effect when it burst onto the screen. An hilarious and touching movie, filled with great performances and a well-handled screenplay by Tony Gilroy.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is too bad that it isn't re- released so a new generation of viewers could enjoy it. I appreciate the Olympics alot more now that I understand how hard it was to get it all together in the modern era.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Olympics - First Rate
This is a magnificent and wonderful movie about the Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens... the first Olympics in 2000 years. The characters are generally well cast, the dialogue is fitting, and the relations between characters is well developed.I don't know if all the scenes are historically accurate, but I know that a great deal of it is... especially the names of the athletes, the results of the events and the Olympic Stadium in Greece.Although centered around the American team and its athletes, there is considerable attention paid to the lives of athletes from other countries, most notably Greece and Australia.Unfortunately a couple of the athletes portrayed could have been played by actors who were more appropriate for the events they were in, and you'll pick them out right away.5-0 out of 5 stars The First Olympics
The movie The First Olympics is not just an educational movie it also demands your attention for the full 4 hours and 40 minutes. In fact at demands my attention as well as my siblings that everytime we visit our grandparents house in Utah we have to watch it, even if it means staying up until early in the morning. It shows how the first olympics of modern days actually was and what American athletes, as well as other athletes went through, both on their way there and at the Olympics. I would definetely suggest this movie to anyone!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Memories on Ice
In this video, we are treated to the 1995-1996 season of amateur figure skating. Magic Memories On Ice III highlights one of the best seasons of skating, where Michelle Kwan is pretty much the focus here. In this volume, we see Michelle Kwan's rise to 1996 U.S. National Champion, and an unforgettable duel for the World Championship between her and Lu Chen of China, where Michelle ended up the victor. But there are also other gems in this video: Rudy Galindo's excellent skate to become national champion, Todd Eldredge's Gold Medal World performance, plus little caps from other international skaters. Actually, come to think of it, Magic Memories On Ice III showcases a lot of "firsts" for skaters, the previously mentioned winners as well as Russia's Irina Slutskaya's first European Championship. And the annoying commentary from Dick Button is practically deleted, replaced with the pleasant and only occasional word from Dick Emberg. Every skating fan should have this.

The title says it all, this was not perfect, but it was good. When I saw this I was hoping it would be the entire 1994 Olympic Figure Skating competition and not just the highlights. They left out a lot of moments in the ladies figure skating, including the upsetting performances by Josee Chouinard and Surya Bonaly... and they didn't show the entire Usova and Zhulin performance, only about 15 seconds of it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great memories.....
I was given this video as a gift and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it over and over and over.....The commentary, the skating, the Tonya/Nancy fiasco, the Baiul collision and victory, the costumes and themusic come together in such a way that one feels all of the intrigue andexcitement of the 1994 Olympics all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was great
I am so glad I got this video. All the performances are great, especiallyGordeeva and Grinkov's. END ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This 90-minute package captures highlights from NBC-TV's coverage of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. First seen as a salve in the wake of a bribery scandal and terrorist attacks, the games in Salt Lake City turned out to be a record-smashing triumph for the American team. Some of the memorable moments preserved here are the spectacular halfpipe and ski jumping, third-generation Olympian Jim Shea Jr.'s emotional victory in the skeleton, Apolo Anton Ohno's adventures in the frenetic short-track speed skating, the controversy surrounding Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier in the pairs figure skating, and Sarah Hughes's upset victory in women's figure skating. 4-0 out of 5 stars Why??
Ok, my four star rating is because I can't give any sports related DVD anything less... I know, I know, I'm pretty messed up right?
    2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Luckily, my experience with this product was borrowing it from a library; had I purchased it, I would have considered it quite a waste of money.4-0 out of 5 stars Best (but only) Video Scrapbook Available
A moving tribute to the games; however, I would have liked to see more event footage rather than just event highlights and those sappy human interest stories. Costas's voice is fine as narrarator (he's got my vote for the sequel too, if he wants the job). If NBC heeds the call for a follow up ("More Olympic Highlights" or "v2002.2") it would be great to see:Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good show, but...
Well, it's overally good dvd, but as one of the reviewers wrote, you can only pause it during watching. I don't know who made such decision and why - there'sreally no point in it. But the good news is - if you have PC, it's very easily to overcome such minor annoyance - just copy all the stuff to your hardrive, and enjoy it to the fullest.2-0 out of 5 stars Slow motion--forget about it!
Attention skaters: if you're buying this DVD because you think you'll be able to examine complex moves beautifully executed in slow motion, forget it! This DVD is encoded so that that "operation is prohibited." You can pause it, but that's it. (And no, it's not my DVD player; I have 2 players, both of which can go slow motion through other DVDs, but not with this one.)4-0 out of 5 stars A very good video for figure skating
This a very good video that I can find for figure skating. It runs about 80 minutes. The video presents programmes from all the excellent medal winning skaters of 1998 Winter Olympic. Free from the pressure of the judges, the exhilarathing, free-form, anything-goes exhibitions will delight any fan of the art of skating. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars poignancy, athleticism, cultural bias and victory
a thoughtful motion picture of personal trials and triumph. This film deserves a dvd release.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running Brave
This is a great portrayel of Billy Mills. The details of the movie are not the best(such as the football lines in the Olympic stadium).Robby Benson studied Billy Mills as well as worked with Mills to get the character down pat.He alsotrained for and ran a marathon to actually learn how to run like Mills. The story does a great job through flashbacks of telling of Mills' life growing up.It is a very inspirational story that I show my cross country teams.I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to be inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreams Realized
This is the story of the legendary distance runner Billy Mills. Mills is the only American runner in the history of the Olympic games to win a Gold Medal at 10,000 meters. He ran an incredible race but more than that he led an incredible life. Robby Benson does a nice job playing Mr. Mills (who is a Lakota Indian). The final sequence on the track is very close to what actually happened in the race. A very, very inspirational movie about a very, very, very inspirational man. ... Read more

This subtle and deeply moving film about the life of athlete Steve Prefontaine (Billy Crudup) is a rarity: a movie about the beauty of youth, as opposed to a patronizing, junk-culture youth film. Written by legendary Hollywood screenwriter Robert Towne (along with Kenny Moore) and directed by Towne with his usual masculine insight, bold creativity, and superior taste, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Story of an Overachiever in Sports.
This film documents the training and durability of Steve Prefontaine from Oregon to become a track star who overcame all odds to win.In his early live, he had been picked on by bullies because of his mother's nationality so, like Forrest Gump, he had to learn to run fast from those crass youngsters. When he finished high school, he was courted by several universities but chose to stay in his home state to be trained by Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good bio pick of a great runner who died too young
Steve Prefontaine, a record setting middle distance runner, won all his races against Americans. He led his race in the 1972 Olympics but faded to fourth by a breath. He died in a car accident (drinking was involved, but to what degree is debated) in 1975 at the age of 24.All admit that he wasn't the perfect physical specimen for a runner, but he was gritty and tenacious and would not give anything less than everything he had.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This is such a great true story of a man that we can all look up to.Prefontaine was an amazing runner who was the holder of every American distance-running record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. The cast is top quality and the story will make you clue yourself to the seat so get some pop corn and a drink before you start because this is an amazing movie about a man who was spectacular. ... You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by thishourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: theUnited States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs.Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kidsmolded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympicgolds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, includingBrooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (whouttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Story of "Miracle of Ice"
For those of you who saw the movie, Miracle, this is a great follow up with the real players and coaches. It covers every game the USA hockey played to win the gold medal. As Al Michals says in the film, "Everyone forgets that the US team had to win one more game after beating the Russians."With interviews with the players from both teams, you really get a sense of how much impact there was from a hockey game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Documentary, but I need the whole game
This was probably the greatest sports upset ever (at least American). No need to rehash what others have said, except for I want this game, the gold medal final, and medal ceremony on DVD.Every anniversary I check to see if it came out. The 20th and 25th anniversaries have past, and I'm not sure it's ever going to come out. This game brings a tear to my eye, because it was so amazing. It shows the true passion of sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Believe In Miracles? Yes!
Greetings, hockey fans across the United States, Canada and the outside countries of all the world. If anyone had been there or remember the time and place when the moment effect everone in site. I'm referring to the moment when Team U.S.A. defeat Team Soviet Union on February 22, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York (13th Winter Olympic Games). Now, I never saw the game when the "moment" happened, because I was only 3 months old. But, as I've grown up during my teen-age years I've seen the clip of when Team U.S.A. scored the go-ahead goal and the famous broadcast call by Al Michaels saying "Do You Believe In Miracles? Yes!" line on television. Now, as an adult that's probably the only hockey moment that I always enjoyed remembering. Who knew that these 20 American college kids with different backgrounds would bond so well as a team. Not only to beat team Soviet Union, but taking home the gold medal and revitalize the hope of the United States in general. I liked the documentry and I'm glad to have it for a DVD collector's item. My final thought would be a token of gratitude for the late head coach Herb Brooks, assistant coach Craig Patrick and the 20 American players to show that anything is possible. That's a true inspiration for me and for everyone else who remember the "Mircle On Ice". Take care and have a nice day. Bye! ... Read more
