5-0 out of 5 stars Just perfect!
Keys for writing a good crime novel don't only affect settings characters or even plot. A great part of succeeding implies to find a good pace and an appropiate style. A good crime novel has to be direct to the bone, suggest violence instead of carefully describing it, use two words instead of three, hide sentimentalism. Laconism and latent violence are the key elements, as important as a carefully chosen setting or treacherous characters with something to hide. Not many writers have succeeded in understanding this, Donald Westlake, James Ellroy and Elmore Leonard being two of them.5-0 out of 5 stars Cold Coast is a Gem
First shown as an orginal Showtime movie last fall, Gold Coast snuck into home video this June with little fanfare. This little gem of a movie deserves at least some the fanfare given its other "sister" Elmore Leonard theatrical releases.Based pretty faithfully on Leonard's book of the same name it stars a perfectly cast David Caruso as Maguire, who in this role gets to smile, be funny, and gets the girl -- worth the price of admission right there.Marg Helgenberger as Karen and Jeff Kober as Roland are also excellent in their roles, with special kudos to Mr. Kober who makes Mr. Leonard's goofy character a villain you love to hate.Peter Weller's direction is fast paced and snappy, it doesn't hurt to have read the book before you see the film.Special mention must also be given the cinematography, the locations are beautifully shot and are visually stunning. Those scenes shot in the late afternoon sun and at the pool by night just make you long to be there! The musical score is wonderfully brassy and jazzy, underscoring perfectly the tone and feel of the film.Though it may be hard to find this video it's worth the effort. So fire up the VCR, pour yourself a tall, cool drink, and take a trip to the Gold Coast as only Elmore Leonard can take you. 3-0 out of 5 stars I... Wanna... Die. LET'S ALL DIE.
Nowhere is, director/screenwriter, Gregg Araki's 1997 conclusion to his nicknamed "Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy". Araki, himself, has asserted that the feature is, "a Beverly Hills 90210 episode on acid." Alas, critics and moviegoers weren't that keen on seeing Araki's extremely frank representation of urban teenagers; critics wrote it off as vile as well as lackluster and the audience just wasn't there.

arraki's teen apocalypse triology ends in the wonderfully lovely "nowhere".
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
Shocking portrayal of teen angst and lust done by some of America's most famous teen icons.PUNK ROCK!If you're into sex, drugs, music, or just cult movies of that sort, view this independent gem. This film has so many cameo's it'll make your head spin.John Ritter as the televangalist is CLASSIC.The humor is well-worn, but it's wittingly done.Psychosomatic sexuality and imagery prevail here.Where?Nowhere.But alot closer than you'd like to admit YOU FREAK.So go pick this up and stop floggin your puppy in the shower! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars unique historical spy film
This is one of the few William Holden films I completely enjoy. His lovers-parting dialogue with Lili Palmer is a complete cliche, but the two stars deliver the lines with poignancy. The protagonist's "pragmatic" business ethic contains enough candid tarnish to bring unique dimensions to Holden's performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Holden shows his star power
William Holden plays Erik Erickson, an American ex-patriot living in Stockholm.WWII has just begun.Erickson is an oil trader and as Sweden was neutral, he didn't care where the oil came from. This gives Erickson access to many German cities. He is blackmailed by British Agents and forced to spy for them. After seeing the brutal treatment of some Jewish prisoners, he goes from reluctant spy to eager spy.He proposes to build a refinery in Germany. This allows him to cultivate important relationships and recruit his own network. As the Nazi's take firmer control, his job becomes more risky.Eventually, he is uncovered and must escape back to Sweden.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story, well made film.
No need to rehash the story -- the other reviews here do that quite nicely. The film is powerful in an understated way, made particularly compelling thanks to excellent location work in many of the real locations, and of course, the suspenseful subject matter.Everything is well crafted, with lots of fascinating detail. My only minus was that I felt it was a bit heavy on narration.Nevertheless, the film will keep you riveted for 140 minutes, which can't be said for many current films.Sadly, the DVD contains no bonus features, which is why I couldn't give the product 5 stars. It would have been great to have a commentary about the real events, or even a little 10 minute featurette.Regardless, it's a worthy addition to your DVD library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Body Language
Heather Locklear does a great job portraying a recently promoted executive at a major corporation, whose new secretary (played to perfection by Linda Purl) desires not only her boss's image, but her life. Arthur Allan Seidelman's direction seems to revolve around those high-heel, businesswoman shoes, which one eventually gets used to as the film progresses. All the acting is absolutely marvelous, most notably by Linda Purl, and the script is very well put together. Misha Segal's music is slightly cheesy but never boring, and the visual effects (such as the slow motion used when Norma stabs someone) are quite suitable for this sort of TV movie. Way above-average, and very addictive for a person who loves thrillers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Body Language
I thoroughly enjoy this rather cheesy thriller.I enjoy Heather Locklear, and as since she is a wonderful actress this was just a fun thing for her.The cool thing is that this was filmed here in my hometown of PortlandOregon.Definitely worth watching-Great clothes, makeup etc. Silly butrelaxing!

Editorial Review

Do you know anyone who hasn't seen this movie? A box-office smash when released in 1993, this spectacular update of the popular 1960s TV series stars Harrison Ford as a surgeon wrongly accused of the murder of his wife.He escapes from a prison transport bus (in one of the most spectacular stunt-action sequences ever filmed) and embarks on a frantic quest for the true killer's identity, while a tenacious U.S. marshal (Tommy Lee Jones, in an Oscar-winning role) remains hot on his trail. Director Andrew Davis hit the big time with this expert display of polished style and escalating suspense, but it's the antagonistic chemistry between Jones and Ford that keeps this thriller cooking to the very end. In roles that seem custom-fit to their screen personas, the two stars maintain a sharply human focus to the grand-scale manhunt, and the intelligent screenplay never resorts to convenient escapes or narrative shortcuts. Equally effective as a thriller and a character study, this is a Hollywood blockbuster that truly deserves its ongoing popularity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good film update of old series
Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) and his wife, Helen (Sela Ward) seem to have it all, until she is murdered. The police believe that Richard killed her, and there is enough evidence to convict him, and a serious miscarriage of justice results in Richard being on a train on his way to prison. But, there is a train accident, Richard escapes, and he goes on a quest for his wife's true killer, while trying to keep one step ahead of the police, led by Marshal Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Fugitive
Excellent movie!Having watched the TV series as a child, it was refreshing to see the story done in today's setting with the different techological elements of our lives woven into the story.Of course that is not unique in itself but the results were stimulating and exciting to behold.

5-0 out of 5 stars interested in a jag
52 pick up is a tightly woven film noir that builds the suspense right from the outset. Harry and Barbara
5-0 out of 5 stars "Gotta lot a mileage on her"
I've been waiting for this movie to be released on dvd in widescreen with extras for years. I hope Roy Scheider knows about this non release. The movie has been forgotten or hung up for whatever reason and it's a damn shame. The acting is superior all around. John Glover plays one of the best weird, cleverly evil criminals of filmdom. Yes I'd go that far. The movie has a mixture of many elements. One element captures perfectly the decadent street sex of the eighties. Also mixed in between Roy Scheiders affluent fish out of water charactor are drugs, kidnapping, revenge, love, lust, redemption and betrayal. Also added to the boiling pot are an unusual assembly of actors. Some are the epitome of the eighties. Others are old screen stars, decent tv actors, then unknown names, great charactor actors and even a "cameo" by a renowned porn "star". This caldron, well paced and plotted really nails it. Some may say I'm overratting it, and maybe I am a bit, but hey, I'm the reviewer. 52 Pickup is well done, particually now in a nostalgic way. Forget the VHS tape(even laserdisc). DVD only. Hang in there sport.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nasty little gem..."Hey SPORT"
I saw this in the theaters when it first came out in the 80s, not expecting much, but then - BAM! - this nasty little gem of a thriller delivers thrills in spades.JOHN GLOVER creates one of the most chilling, yet hilarious, villains in film history - and the film's most infamous sequence - the videotape replay of Cindy's snuff-movie murder that Glover forces Scheider to watch in horror SITTING THE SAME CHAIR WHERE SHE WAS KILLED! - still never fails to disturb the viewer.Frankenheimer directs how the best do: so seamless and suble and unobtrusive, you never notice him tightening the screws right up until a white-knuckle climax.I cannot quite believe this film is still NOT ON DVD, even though the shelves are crammed with lesser product.C'mon, guys, get with it!Once you see 52 PICK-UP, you will never forget it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bonnie & Clyde
"Bonnie & Clyde" is #27 on The American Film Insitute's Top 100 above films like Midnight Cowboy, Pulp Fiction, and Unforgiven to name a few. I don't like this movie as much as those films, but this is a damn good crime film with some great performances; I honestly know nothing about Bonnie & Clyde, all I know is basic stuff. Two madly-in-love Depression era bank robbers. Having said that, I don't know how much of this film is fact and how much is fiction and whether you do or not, this is a really enjoyable movie. Bonnie Parker (the beautiful Faye Dunaway) first meets Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) when he attempts to steal her mother's car. She catches him by surprise and the two go into town and after some flirtation, he tells her he has just gotten out of prison for armed robbery. She's intrigued, but doesn't believe him. To prove that he is what he says he is, Clyde quickly robs a store and drives Bonnie into a field; She's kind of unnerved, but after some talking. She joins him on the road and eventually begins robbing banks with him. After driving through a town, they enlist the help of a young kid named C.W. Moss (Michael J. Pollard) who proves to be a good young protege.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great flick!
It follows the adventures of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker as they rob banks throughout the midwest.I wish I was Clyde Barrow...

2-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
I expected so much more from this movie, I guess since the cast included two of my favorite actors (Jolie & Washington) and also had the always on point Queen Latifah as well.I watched with full expectation to absolutely love this movie, but I walked away bitter with shattered expectations.First off I will say that Latifah was wonderful here and she proved as the only reason I smiled on occasion during this movie experience.Washington and Jolie on the other hand were so unbelievable (especially Washington who really strained in this role) that I was constantly asking myself "do I really like these two?" and I had to remind myself of movies like 'Gia' and 'Training Day' to answer with a resounding "YES!"
5-0 out of 5 stars Very exciting thriller!!!
I was very pleasantly surprised at this film. Denzel Washington proves again that he can handle any role that he chooses to play. In this case, he plays homicide inspector, Lincoln Rhyme who has been nearly paralyzed after suffering from an accident in the line of duty. But now, when a mysterious killer begins killing off people in a very peculiar matter, he must team with a hard-headed rookie cop (Angelina Jolie) to solve the crimes. Supporting cast includes Queen Latifah, Michael Rooker, Mike McGlone, Luis Guzman, Leland Orser and Ed O'Neil.
5-0 out of 5 stars A solid, emblematic and first-rate thriller!

5-0 out of 5 stars MONEY TALKS...
This glossy, stylish, and elegant remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 film, "Dial M for Murder", forges its own identity, as it leaves behind the theatrical underpinnings of the original film. Screenwriter Patrick Smith Kelly offers up an intelligent, well-written script with some surprising twist and turns. Beautifully directed by Andrew Davis (The Fugitive, Under Siege, The Package), the film delicately weaves its ingenious plot.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Murder- A Good remake of Dial M For Murder
At first this movie had great scenery, good acting by Michael Douglas who pays his wife's lover( Viggo Monsteran) to kill his wife. There is good suspense, It kinda kept me going for a while, but the ending was quiteshocking. Dial M For Murder was better.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't think so....
Ok, so you have Gwenyth a rich, beautiful, young professional paired off with Michael Douglas??What was the casting department thinking? This movie was made for every man's fantasy out there. David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak's sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequently filled with adoring close-ups of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean's gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of Russia, the house in the country taken over by ice; these are re-created with Lean's unerring sense of grandness. The movie is so lush and so long that it becomes an irresistible wallow, even when logic suffers--like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD for an Amazing movie
It was more than 16 years since I watched Dr. Zhivago on a Betamax.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Hollywood's Great Epic Films
DR. ZHIVAGO was one of the last great epic films produced by Hollywood. In the 1950's and 60's, a string of films were produced that resembled closely resembled grand opera without music: the casts were large, the stories intricate, and the settings spectacular. Some were great successes such as BEN HUR. Others are notable disasters, with CLEOPATRA perhaps being the best known example. DR. ZHIVAGO may be the most enduring of these epic films. It's based on a novel by Boris Pasternak that was banned in the USSR which only added to the fascination of audiences in the United States. The film boasts of an all star cast. It has one of the most beloved musical scores. It seems that no expense was spared in the filming. It was also a bit shocking for some American audiences in terms of material. Few American films in the early 1960's dealt with a man who loved two women with love scenes to boot! Of course it would be tame and perhaps too simplistic fare for an audience of today, but it was daring at the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epic
A powerful, sweeping movie that makes a character out of the Russian landscape, Doctor Zhivago is about a man broken by the times he inhabits.Set around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution we're introduced to our main players - Zhivago, the good doctor; Tonya, the faithful wife; and Lara, the beauty who steals men's hearts. The three and a half hour run time allows plenty of room for side plots, but the main tale is of Zhivago's path crossing with Lara on several occasions - through chance, through war, and through communist desperation - and how his marital fidelity is eventually defeated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate thriller!
According the classic established patternsof the narrative line of the great Frederick Forsythe 's this suspenseful picture begins with just at the End of the WW2, when a German Officer is captured with important documents which originally would become a decisive deal to firm an armistice due the potent and extraordinary finding, that previously had been a successful discover; suddenly we go to 1980 in the middle ofa simple murderer but on the road, the investigation will interweave with impressive consequences as a true spider 's web.

How can you hate JAWS? It's a classic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jaws!!!!!
Well, I'm not reviewing this DVD, I'm just reviewing the movie. The movie is awesome! I am now a huge Jaws fan! This movie is good because of the story. I mean a 35-ft. shark terrorizing the small island of Amity is an awesome story! My favorite part is when Quint gets eaten by the shark! I highly reccomend this movie who is in the mood for a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Movie That Created Summer Blockbusters
If you want to learn about the movie that created the summer blockbuster phenomenon (I've never understood that, wouldn't it make more sense to release the biggest movies in the winter when people who live away from the equator are trapped indoors and looking for things to do instead of in the summer when it's nice out), make sure you pick up JAWS.One of Steven Spielberg's earliest films and his first true masterpiece from a directing standpoint and a box office success, this movie is rare masterpiece. The premise is simple, a great white shark comes into the shallow waters outside the water of Massachusetts, and begins terrorizing people. The local sheriff (Roy Scheider) works with a local fisherman (Robert Shaw) and a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) to go after the shark who has fatally attacked several people, and the rest is history. Not a horror film, but much more than a simple drama, JAWS is one of the finest films of the 1970s and one of the best films ever!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Charlie Chan Entry
This Charlie Chan entry starring Sidney Toler has our favorite detective from Honolulu dealing with sabatoge and murder at a convention for detectives. Chan's enthusiastic offspring, Jimmy (Sen Yung), arrives in New York just in time to help pop. Chan's comment about young Jimmy's involvement in previous cases to a fellow detective is a scream!
4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Entry in the Chan Series
Charlie Chan films are frequently accused of pandering to racial stereotypes. There is a certain truth to this, but Charlie Chan and company were neither more nor less stereotypical than such other popular series as the "Blondie" or "Dr. Kildare" series, and--while we may occasionally roll our eyes at a few 1930s sensibilities--its stereotypes are never mean-spirited and Charlie (along with his various sons) is always presented in a positive light.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Movie
This is one of the best Charlie Chan movies. Though I found the beginning to be slightly confusing, it is a very compelling and interesting story. I would recommend this film to any Chan fan. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars John Wayne, the draft and credibility
There appear in these forums discrepancies re: John Wayne's age. Marion Morrison was born May 26, 1907. He was 34 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Are we too old to serve at 34? If we believe and profess passionatley that WWII was a war against civilization, do we refuse to fight in it because we have kids?
2-0 out of 5 stars Big Jim McWayne
A rather old fashioned even for the fifties movie.Presents a rather simplistic view of world politics. This is more representative of Mr. Wayne's politics than of cinematic license. I am not a fan of the man's politics, but many of his movies(Red River, The Searchers)were classics, and as I age I realize there were many facets to his character. This particular movie is NOT one of best, however.

3-0 out of 5 stars not wayne's best, but to slander the man is just low!!!!!
in answer to the "draft dodge" question, when wayne was 39 years old in 1939(yes 39) he became a star in stagecoach.at the age of 42(yes 42) he was given a deferment because of his AGE and the number of children he had not because he was a coward.john ford a vet of world war II9he lost an eye) made many movies with wayne and wouldn't have had wayne been a coward.no the movies isn't very good but its ok when viewed as a time capsule, and thats it.wayne looking to stop a commie plot in hawaii is an action movie and propganda, nothing more.

Editorial Review

An atmospheric and sexy crime caper, this stars Dennis Quaid as a New Orleans police detective. He's a smooth talker who butts heads with the new assistant district attorney, Ellen Barkin. She's rigid and plays by the rules; he is mildly corrupt. They soon find themselves romantically entwined, and a bit chagrined. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cajun Spice
This colorful and fast moving film from director Jim McBride about an only slightly corrupt cop in the "Big Easy" and the pretty Assistant District Attorney sent to investigate the department is filled with cajun spice and atmosphere. The lines between right and wrong are blurred like a rainy windshield in this lightning paced and very sexy cop film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Noir, with a twist of Romantic Comedy
Dennis Quaid plays a not-so-straight cop, and Ellen Barkin an assistant district attorney suspicious of him being involved in police corruption.Forget about the murder-mystery.The core appeal is the sexy interplay between Quaid and Barkin, who are perfect in their respective roles. The Southern setting adds color and sound to the romance. The character development is implicit and natural, and entertaining. This should have been Dennis Quaid's breakthrough movie. As leading man, he was on par with Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks. What happened to him in the 90's?

5-0 out of 5 stars Quaid Makes Barkin His "Big Easy".
The talented and handsome Dennis Quaid plays his finest role to date, as New Orleans detective Remy McSwain. He's more than a sexy swine, he's on the take too. This doesn't make him a bad guy, after all, his "daddy" and "grandaddy" did the same when they were "on the job".The Big Question, does this make him a "Bad Cop"?Enter Ellen Barkin, as Assistant DA Anne Osborne, smart, yet naive enough to fall for McSwain's all too obvious charms.Since she has come to town to investigate police corruption, namely his and his close associates, her innateweakness for Quaid's temptingly sexy McSwain, will lead to hard choices. Will her heart, or her reputation on the job rule?Watch this film and see................... No matter how many times I've seen this film, I find it tremendously entertaining.Jim McBride squeezed some of the best performances of all time fromthe two leads.I was amazed when I read that Barkin and Quaid didn't harmonize well off screen, because their love scene is one of the most convincing I've ever seen in film.Remy McSwain is unforgettably irresistible during his barechested seduction of "unlucky in love" Anne Osborne. He literally lets her hair down (always in a bun), while touching and kissing her in the most tender and sensual way, then tells her; "Well cherie, your luck's about to change..." Indeed! ................ This film has a wonderful musical score from Brad Feidel, I love the opening theme, and purchased the soundtrack for it.Also, the terrific New Orleans atmosphere adds depth and authenticity to the story.I've been to New Orleans, the French Quarter and Bourbon Street myself, if you haven't, this will give you an excellent vicarious feel of it.In particular, the scene where Quaid has to sleep on the couch while Barkin is in his bed during a typical summer night thunderstorm, music droning from the street, is a gem................. Aside from the steamy romance, atmosphere, and score, the plot hooks you as well. The script is sharp, witty, and peppered with colorful local lingo."The Big Easy", is a fast paced police action thriller, but with a semi-noir feel that is unique. The story moves along interestingly throughout, is easy to follow, and builds into a terrific and satisfying resolution. What more can you ask for? ............... Like subsequent police thrillers that have spicy sexual undercurrents, particularly Mike Figgis' "Internal Affairs" (see my review) or Paul Verhoeven's "Basic Instinct", this film is one to watch with the one you love. However, the aforementioned love scene between Quaid and Barkin, may cause youto come back and watch the rest later.Whatever you do, don't let this unique and sexy adventure pass Bayou. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Paul Mercurio's bare buns
Firsthand, as a movie in itself, this is [...]. The original novel by Anne Rice titled "Exit to Eden" plunged fearlessly into the depths of an alternate sexual lifestyle, bringing S&M from a shady dungeon into the light of an island paradise where people were given the chance to explore and understand their sexual fantasies in a safe and open environment. The journey toward sexual understanding (and understanding of the self) that Lisa the dominatrix, and Elliot, her slave, find themselves on, is at the forefront.
5-0 out of 5 stars WHY IS THIS NOT IN STOCK, AMAZON?

1-0 out of 5 stars Execrable Eden
I remember this as one of the most unpleasant viewing experiences of my life. Gary Marshall takes that sugar-frosted sleaze thing that underlied 'Pretty Woman' to the nth degree here, and the results are excruciating. Not sexy. Not funny. Not fit for human consumption. Sort of the Disney version of Pasolini's 'Salo' - only way way worse. I could never have imagined how bad this movie would be. Worth a look maybe for the slack-jawed what-were-they-smoking cinematic-train-wreck horror it inspires.

1-0 out of 5 stars absolutely a stinker!
I saw this film in the 60's ...and it certainly hasn't improved with age; unless you view watching grass grow as a highlight of your daily existence. This film plods along at an excruciatingly, slow pace until you are ready to scream for it to end. It's nothing more than the film version of pop art: a simplistic story of a photographer who shot a murder on film; which is subsequently stolen.End of plot and movie, unless you enjoy watching mimes playing tennis at the end.Don't waste valuable time making sense of this film. You'd be better off watching clouds and interpreting wh
