Editorial Review

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn't fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn't have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb film
'A Bronx Tale' is about a boy named Calegero Anello living in the Bronx who is torn between two worlds, the world of his father (played by Robert De Niro) and the world of a local gang leader named Sonny (played by Chazz Palminteri). The viewer gets to follow Calegero or "C" from the time that he is 9 years old to the time that he is 17 years old. In the process, Calegero/C as well as the viewer learn some valuable lessons about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Touching Film
Robert De Niro's directorial debut is a great movie and very under rated. The man has proved himself a genius in the acting field and in this film shows his talent in film making.

Editorial Review

Poor Charlotte Hollis. She's been shunned by the community for decades, ever since the fateful night in 1927 when her lover was hacked apart with an axe. Her antebellum southern mansion is slated for the bulldozer, as it stands in the way of highway construction. Charlotte's only hope lies in her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland), coming down from up north to help settle things. Miriam, however, has other designs. Together with her boyfriend Drew (Joseph Cotten), she embarks on a scheme to systematically drive Charlotte out of her mind (not a great leap) and get her mitts on the family fortune. From there, things only get more complicated. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a very good film with great performances on the nature of madness and reality
While this movie works well as a murder mystery, it is much more than that.It deals quite masterfully with the notions of what madness is and how tenuous the notions of reality actually are. There is also that whole Peyton Place sense of the steamy hidden reality behind the surface façade of propriety.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why did I never hear about this before?
I LOVE this movie. Why is it not talked about more? While it may be a little over-the-top, it's still a well made movie. The plot is completely original, and the acting is some of the best I have ever seen. I have never seen Joseph Cotten act so evil! I really wish Bette Davis would have done more movies like this. If you've already seen this movie, i recommend "The Nanny" (I think that's what it's called) and "Whatever happened to Baby Jane." In my opinion, neither of these surpasses this. If you love movies about sane people who are driven insane, this movie is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY OVER THE TOP
Although this 1964 shocker will probably be most remembered for Joan Crawford's unwillingness to rejoin her Baby Jane co-star Bette Davis, I think CHARLOTTE is a much better movie.Sure, it's way over the top but actresses such as Bette Davis, Olivia DeHavilland and Agnes Moorehead have the talent and panache to pull it off. With wonderful support from Joseph Cotten, Mary Astor, Victor Buono and Cecil Kellaway, the story unfolds nicely with Davis simply superb in her role as the demented Charlotte, a Southern Belle accused of murdering her married lover in 1927, but who feels she's protecting someone else.Olivia is smooth in a role she usually doesn't play and Moorehead richly deserved her Supporting Actress nomination as the dowdy housekeeper. The plot's pretty predictable but it's so lovingly crafted, it works.Actresses like these don't come along every day but be glad we were blessed with this trio! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hawaiian fun with legendary characters Ma and Pa kettle
I always find the Ma and Pa Kettle films alot of fun to watch and although they could be dismissed by some people as a "guilty pleasure" I feel there is alot to enjoy in the old fashioned comedy that was their special charm. Alot of their appeal for me results from the wonderful playing of veterans Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride in their immortal roles of the wacky Ma and Pa Kettle. It's obvious that never once in all their films as the Kettles did these two actors ever loose respect for the characters they were playing which I feel explains their enduring popularity with audiences. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a Kettle fan don't miss seeing Waikiki.
Ma and Pa Kettle in Waikiki is a rib tickler of a comedy. You'll laugh and roll as this down to earth family finds themselves in Hawaii.By shere mistake and accident Pa blunders his way to the top of his cousin'spineapple business. His goofs turn out to be incredibly beneficial andhelpful to Rodney Kettle. You won't be sorry buying this video. If youdon't like it, something is wrong in your humor zone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still My Favorite
The film initiates with two small-time thieves, Honey Bunny and Pumpkin, who spontaneously decide to hold up a restaurant. The film then shifts to the story of Jules and Vincent, who are hitmen for the well-known and feared Marsellus Wallace, who is caught up in a deal gone wrong with struggling boxer Butch Coolidge.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, everything about it.
Yes a bit strange but I loved this movie! My boyfriend and my mom recommended Pulp Fiction to me and now I recommend it to you!I loved how it all fit together but was in like 5 different chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film And Terrific Writing!
"Pulp Fiction is not an overrated film, in fact it is an outstanding film. There are quite a few reviews here, therefore, I will be short. Having seen 'Resevoir Dogs' and liking it very much, I was really impressed with Tarantino's follow-up of "Pulp Fiction."One of the things I really liked about this film, to name just one, was the different offbeat characters that Tarantino put into the film. From John Travolta, [as Vinny the nutcase with a penchant for killing] to Samuel L. Jackson, as Travolta's stone cold killer partner; these two characters alone made the film terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Fingers
Based on a true story, this movie is one of the best spy thrillers I've ever seen. The screen play is written with such intelligence and absolute wit that it keeps you at the edge of your seat from the moment it beings until the very last surprising, yet satisfying, second of the movie. James Mason's performance in nothing short of brilliant. His charm is utterly captivating. His lines in this movie are totally unforgettable, as are the lines of Danielle Darrieux who told a German officer "Please don't look at me as if you have more than your salary to live on". This is also a story that makes you reflect on the difference between good and bad leadership and how even the best information or knowledge in the hands of "juvenile delinquents" (as someone called them in the movie) can be useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Black Comedy Of Espionage And Exquisite Manners; One Of James Mason's Best Films
Picture the results of the Normandy invasion if the Germans had known in advance that the Second Front would take place there in early June. It turns out they did know...and they didn't believe the information was true. Note that elements of the plot are discussed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Catch it if You Can
"Five Fingers" is the story of a spy for hire during WWII who has a job as a valet to the ambassador at the British Embassy in Turkey. The movie is a US production but it has the feel of a British movie. That isn't necessarily because of the actors or the setting. It seemed like the many black and white movies the British produced during the 1950's; a bit high brow andmore prone to the dialogue that the action. At times I wondered why the movie came with a fairly high rating.I appreciated the suspense but it usualyy seemed to come up short. As "Five Fingers" entered the final third or fourth of its' 100 or so minutes, things actually started to pick up and my attention level rose through the rest of the movie. This is a movie that pays to watch to the very end. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The film you were not allowed to see!
Released my MGM--Metro Goldwyn-Mayer, October 24, 1962.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
The Manchurian Candidate is terrifying.Conspiracy buffs will love this film. The definition of unsettling is seeing crooner and movie musical star Frank Sinatra giving an Oscar-worthy performance as a terrified man who is in way over his head in a conspiracy he does not understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars the better version
This version is far superior to the ill advised attempt at a remake. The original is more suspenseful than the remake. If you decide you want to see both, even though the endings are not identical, I recommend that you see this version first because the remake has enough similarities to ruin the suspense. Frank Sinatra portrays a Korean war veteran named Bennet Marco who has nightmares about brainwashing with fellow platoon member Raymond Shaw, played by Lawrence Harvey, killing companions upon the order of their captors. The dream sequences are totally surreal, an aspect missing from the remake. Shaw is highly decorated war hero who is dominated by his mother (Angela Lansbury).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Movie You've Never Heard of....
Yes, there is an explanation as to why this movie sells on the secondary market for more than an ounce of many precious metals. Skip Woods (writer of Swordfish)penned a nice little story about a day (Thursday to be exact) in the life of a reformed thug, and how in this one day this new life he has created for himself comes crashing down around him. The storyline is unlike any other I have watched, definitely was an ideal concept in 1998 (this should've been a strong box office draw, and probably would have if done with a major studio and bigger names).Without ruining the novelty of the story, this is worth the watch due to its high action, unexpected twists and turns and strong acting (high marks for Mickey Rourke--no one does "slimeball" quite as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome....

1-0 out of 5 stars Where to begin?
The book came out in the mid 90's and I wasn't old enough to be coherent, so it went unread.Fastforward to last Friday. Was in my scools library and there it was.Today I finished it and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Can't wait to get my hands on the next... eleven.Anyway I got the movie in the mail from here used a few days ago and, novel read, I watched it.Wow, what a dissapointment.Important plot elements and character-defining scripts were ripped and torn out, dropped upon the preverbial cutting-room floor.Even unnecessarily removed pieces were cut like the guard's side-arm being replaced by a police special revolver to a Beretta. My question: why?Carpathia was just a seemingly tossed in figure with no personality or direction. He seemed like a random guy that just popped up and said "I'm gonna own the world."Steele didn't have to take any time to think over his commitment for God, he just said, "Okay, I believe now."Unrealistic!Acting was bad, dialogue was bad...The actors used in the roles portrayed them well visually, but other than that... meh.Even the way the preacher of the video tape sat was changed. It's like they purposefully made the book and movie different.Want to get the real story?Spend a couple extra hours and ENJOY the book. It's worth it, trust me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read the book, don't watch the movie.
I was a big fan of the Left Behind series while they were covering the first half of the tribulation.(The second half I began to get the feeling that they were milking this cash cow for all it was worth). So I was excited when I heard that Left Behind was coming out with a movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars re: Darth Wader
You ask if this (Tribulation) is true, than why bother being a Christian , you can live how you want and then get your 2nd chance in the Tribulation after the Rapture. Well, I assure you, a 'pre-trib' rapture is by FAR the most believed of the three (incl. mid-trib rapture or no rapture...just the Second Coming) The most blatant, obvious proof in scripture of a pre-trib rapture is found in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 : 'For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from the graves. Then, together with them,we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with Him forever.(NLT)

4-0 out of 5 stars What is justice?
I have long awaited this movie to be released on DVD.A great suspense story that taps into that internal desire to have justice metted out.Would you get it right?

2-0 out of 5 stars sorry I got it
could have been a truly interesting film, just plain simpleminded and annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware the chamber
As anyone who has ever read Plato's REPUBLIC will tell you, the concept of justice is not nearly so straightforward as we would like to believe. In a perfect world, all the bad guys would go straight to the slammer and all the good guys would be set free and exonerated. We live, of course, in what is far from a perfect world.

5-0 out of 5 stars STANWYCK SCREAMS HER HEAD OFF!!!
Stanwyck screams her head off in this, her last theatrical release!I don't know how she kept from rupturing her vocal chords! She's the greatest actress that ever was!!Robert Taylor (her ex-husband) looks simply terrible in this film. This was four years before his death from lung cancer.Barbara looks sensational but Taylor looks and acts really bad.The movie is a neat little thriller with a dandy opening!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Creepy camp shocker has hoots, howls and thrills
I first saw this gem on TV in the mid 1970s on a Saturday afternoon. It frightened me as a child and fascinates me as an adult.Another in a string of William Castle shockers, this film has a great performance from Barbara Stanwyck along with plenty of cheesy thrills and campy dialogue as only Castle can deliver ("When I'm awake with you my life is like a nightmare!").Memorable music adds to the spell. The recent horror hit "House of Wax" pays homage to "The Night Walker" in a key scene. Why isn't this on DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely HYSTERICAL!!
Stanwyck, Stanwyck, Stanwyck...she runs amok in this film, most likely channeling the rage she felt towards her agent. She kicks with her pumps and screams with her gin-cracked voice! The bizarre score enhances the creepiness of the film, an atmoshpere which otherwise mostly comes from the bad screenwriting--that kind of creepy!Robert Taylor, Stanwyck's ex-husband acts with her in this one as well as Lloyd Bochner as "The Dream".If you even mildly appreciate William Castle and creepy, campy classics, get it for a huge belly laugh, you won't be disappointed...Stanwyck at her worst-best!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lynda Carter Is A Very Talented And Underrated Actress!!!
This movie is kind of like 'Bonnie and Clyde" and Ms. Lynda Carter gives an excellent performance in it. I do find it very strange and sad that the Movie Going Public seems to be intimidated by beautiful actresses such as Ms. Carter and feel more at ease with "The Girl Next Door " types such as Sandra Bullock and Meg Ryan. As a consequence beautiful actresses sometimes miss out on the really good roles which is is a realshame. I think Ms. Lynda Carter deserves better and as always she is a delight to watch onscreenand I think it is very sad that we do not see more of her on the big screen.

Editorial Review

Otto Preminger turned this 1959 courtroom drama, based on the popular novel, into terrific adult drama. James Stewart stars as a small-town lawyer who defends an army officer (Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering a bartender who assaulted his wife (Lee Remick). The taut script, large performance by Stewart, and then-daring elements of the story (words like "panties" are spoken in the context of discussing a sex crime) give the action a certain immediacy--which you don't find very often in today's movies about jurisprudence. Nice work by Remick and Gazzara, as well as George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell, and real-life judge Joseph N. Welch, who plays the judge in this film. A very good experience all around. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars more preminger. please
"I'm just a country lawyer" begins James Steward as he tries to fend off a very young George C Scott and the new DA as they try an unlikeableBen Gazarra for murder. So why did James Steward, the old DA, take on a case like this? That's the question I'm stuck with.By the way, I love how Otto Preminger directs a movie.Love how he changes Point-of-view and how he engages us in a courtroom battle.Brilliant staging, great performances...all typical Preminger.Do I believe the guy raped Lee Remick?Yes I do.Do I believe Lee Remick likes to lead men on and hungers for the attention of men?Absolutely!Do I believe Ben Gazarra was in his "right mind" when he murdered the guy?I don't know...is anyone in their "right mind" when they committ murder? But I do LOVE this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy of a Classic
Using a popular novel by an actual attorney, director Otto Preminger pushed the bounds of 1959 American movie censorship by directing and producing one of the most frank, hard-hitting, and engrossing films of the 1950's.It was certainly the most adult film that James Stewart had made up to that time and, given his preference for "family films" in later years, this may have been the most shocking film of his career. Its honesty and innovations are such that it remains remarkably realstic and relevant today.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dull, dated, and a pompous length
I fairly enjoyed the quaint opening of the movie with Jimmy fishing and reminiscing with his legal eagle pal. However, then

5-0 out of 5 stars What's in a name?
This film is a fascinating combination of modern and medieval elements. The setting is an abbey, whose name according to the narrator, 'it seems pious and prudent to omit'. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Umberto Eco, a semiologist and intellectual I had the pleasure of meeting twice - once at my university in America, and then again a few years later in London. Semiotics is a study of signs - in many ways, my theological training parallels, and it is this kind of parallel that is at the heart of the novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Set in a monastery during the 1300's, this is a wonderfully written, engaging crime drama filled with Holmesian logic and forensics, labyrinths, secret libraries, forbidden manuscripts, poison, and the many temptations of flesh as well as being a fantastic murder mystery that captures the poverty, darkness and ignorant shadow of abused spiritual power (through the corrupt Inquisition) prevalent at the time. The always excellent Sean Connery has the lead as Brother William of Baskervilles, scholar, teacher and sleuth, with the youthful Christian Slater doing a fine job as his novice and "Watson", Adso.Ron Perlman was able to make his supporting character, the slow, multi-lingual (usually in one sentence) hunchback monk Salvatore sympathetic/pathetic even though he was not likeable.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Middle Ages come alive!
Definitely a great mystery and one of my personal favorites, The Name of the Rose, brings to the screen the adaptation of Umberto Eco's book about a series of crimes that are committed in a remote Benedictine monastery in Italy during the fourteenth century, at a time when Western Europe is making the transition from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance Era.

3-0 out of 5 stars 2.5, maybe...
Raymond Chandler's wisecracking, star-crossed private eye Philip Marlowe is transplanted into the swinging '60s where hopheads, strippers and psychiatrists join the usual compliment of thugs and goons that make his life miserable.James Garner gets a nice dry run for the "Rockford Files" TV show, while Rita Moreno bares all in her climactic stripping scene.Honestly, the script is not that great -- for the life of me I couldn't actually figure out who did what, or why... But it's still a fun film, in a campy kinda way.The film's one truly great moment is a scene is with Caroll O'Connor as a police detective who, having wearied of playing Marlowe's schnook, bursts into a violent tirade about how lousy his job is, and nearly beats the handcuffed private eye to death. It's a scene that could stand tasteful recycling elsewhere and, I suspect, was only in the film because O'Connor improv-ed it and made *something* good happen in this otherwise somewhat addled production...

5-0 out of 5 stars Garner as Private Eye as Tenatious as a Bobo Doll
Garner wins our sympathy as a battered P.I. who's client doesn't like him and neither do the thugs who cross his path. This movie will make you feel like laughing and crying at the some time. But you know that Marlowe is tough enough to come out on top at the end of the day.Sort of corny in a Seventies kind of way, Marlowe is definitely comforting mind candy so curl up with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars "Rockford Files"+ "Shaft" = "Marlowe" A terrible combonation
The title for this review says it all, it's exactly what "Marlowe" is. This is an atrocity.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A review by one of the cast, funny and exciting!
I played Douglas Wright Jr. in this movie. At the time, approximately 1972, this was an All star cast. This movie will make you laugh, reminisce, and is thoroughly entertaining. You won't meet two more determined and committed detectives who are truly concerned about their community. This was my first movie and the cast was so nice to me.At the time I was 12, so it was all new to me.Luckily, my father took off from work to accompany me on set every day my role was filmed.Talk about support. This was a wonderful experience and I was fortunate to meet so many accomplished actors and film crew.I have the VHS and I am waiting for the DVD, to add to my collection. Go for it, get "Cotton comes to Harlem" while you're at it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Cult-Classic
Just what is it that makes a film a `cult-classic'? Why is it that a film such as "Frankenstein" can be declared a `classic,' while at the same time its, admittedly dissimilar, sequel "The Bride of Frankenstein" will forever be relegated to `cult-classic' status? The term `cult' suggests a limited but devoted fan base, but I believe that the term goes beyond this definition, if only for the reason that many cult-classics are decidedly more popular than several films decreed as classics (see Frankenstein example). Ultimately, the categorization of `cult-classic' is one of genre, dictating less the popularity of a film than certain aesthetic and narrative characteristics. Classic films are typically perceived as highly polished, rigidly acted studio affairs, whereas the cult film could be described as the slightly disturbed, often rough and unruly, step-sibling of the `classic' film. Cult-classics are usually strikingly amateur in quality, often poorly filmed on bad stock, hosting a cast of unknown actors, and driven by unusual plots and campy humour. It is often the amateurish quality of the film that is, whether intended or not, ultimately the appeal. Often the `cult-classic' is a film we enjoy at, rather than with, if you get my meaning.
