Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Was there ever a scarier movie?
I saw this movie again a few years ago and found that I could not view the scenes of the birds attacking the house or the telephone booth. And the scene with the birds occupying just about every available space near the school yard once again gave me the heebie-jeebies!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Birds is Still A Great Film
I've seen The Birds many times, and still love it everytime. It is probably my favorite Hitchcock film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big name cast adds up to unfocussed dud. The worst movie of this genre.
Incredible does describe this movie- incredibly bad! This movie doesn't know what it wants to be. At times one can see attempts to recreate and milk the genuine rage and drama of "Mississippi Burning" or the anger and impunity of "Ghosts of Mississippi", or a hybrid of those and bits and pieces of other movies of this genre. At other times it looks like its just trying to draw from the sex appeal and cheesy interaction of 2 of its main actors, Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. As a result this movie picks up the rear in that genre's list of movies for lack of originality, and the scattered hodge podge statements it tries to make. Some of my favorite actors are wasted, either by being given cliched dialogue, over acting, or being put there merely for their brand name with no script to support their presence. If this script is considered a great adaptation of a great book, then I have no interest in reading the book. I'm sure the idea and the premise looked good on paper. But the direction doesn't guide the story with any coherence or identity of its own.Bullock is mere cheesecake and is unbelievable in her role, proving she's only worthy of b-grade "Miss Congeniality" type crud.McConaughey over acts so much (as can be said for Keifer Sutherland and others) that it can be said he balances out the under acting of Patrick McGoohan, Kevin Spacey and Donald Sutherland. Samuel L. Jackson should be ashamed of himself of not only his worst performance ever, but also easily his worst choice of movies to participate in.Even the extras in this movie are horrible. Enough can't be said about the terrible direction in this movie, equating elongated facial shots with drama to a fault, making Sergio Leone westerns look much more authentic by comparison. This is not "a powerful film." It's a powerful attempt at using a big name cast, a brand name book and a capable director to use material that they know would easily jerk the emotions of its audience, and in doing that they resort to all the cliches of this genre scattering the story line in so many directions, culminating in an over the top, pleading hunk of cheese summation scene by McConaughey that wouldn't hold water in any real court of justice. Maybe people claim greatness to this movie out of guilt, or because they haven't seen quality comparisons and classics like "Mississippis Burning," that has both a great script and fabulous acting. I don't know. All I know is it tugs from so many hokey directions it takes the final scene to remind everyone how it started. Among the top of my most over rated movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Time to Think
Grisham once said he wrote his other books, e.g., The Firm, et al., so he could afford to write important books, like this one, upon which the movie s based.Matthew McConaghey gives a fantastic performance--and why hasn't Hollywood ever--EVER--given him another part this good!Thought provoking, great acting, great story, highly recommend

4-0 out of 5 stars Like "Ocean's 11" at sea
Adapted from a great book by Jack Finney (who wrote the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"), "Assault" follows the exploits of a bunch of losers who hit the big time when they discover a sunken U-Boat, a german sub from WWII.Restoring the sub, they plot to use it in an unbelievable act of high-seas piracy.Setting their sights on the queen of the seas, the Queen Mary, they set out in their purloined sub to rattle disarmed torpedoes at it.The plot allows some lapses in credibility (though there's only the 5 would-be pirates, compared to the numbers it would take to run a real U-boat, but that's acceptable since nothing else goes right for them.4-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra raises a German U-Boat to hijack the Queen Mary
Frank Sinatra plays Mark Brittain, a former submarine officer, who joins rich Italian beauty Rosa Lucchesi (Virna Lisi) and her partners Vic Rossiter (Tony Franciosa) and Eric Lauffnauer (Alf Kjellin) in diving for lost treasure off the coast of Florida. When they discover a sunken German submarine, Luaffnauer the former U-Boat commander convinces the others to raise the sub and use it to hijack the Queen Mary."Assault on a Queen" drags a little bit when they are restoring the sub, but the actual attempt at hijacking redeems the film. You know things are not going to work according to plan but you have to believe Sinatra's character is going to come out of this ahead.Still, you can never be sure. This 1966 film was directed by Jack Donohue and had a script by Rod Serling from the novel by Jack Finney.Final Note: The music for "Assault on a Queen" was by Duke Ellington.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Sinatra vehicles
This captivated me as it was about a duo who took life as it was presented, but tried to capitalize when life was presented to them.I always thought how life would be on the run. This movie encapsulates this thought pattern throughout! The gumption that the cast portrays in trying to rob one of the largest ocean liners in existence is guts personified. This is a great, although implausible, movie, even by today's standards.Rent or buy this movie. You will not be sorry! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, mesmerizing mystery
I saw this several years ago and noticed it was on a late movie recently. This time I was more struck by the quality of the work than the first time.It seems that almost every aspect of this film reeks with elegance and subtlety. First of all, Meryl Streep is great. This is before she became so affecting as she was wont to do in her later films. Then Roy Schneider as the psychiatrist turns in a brilliant understated performance. The villianess was incredible in her chameleon-like personality and actions. (The scene at her apartment where the camera slowly slides to reveal the mutilated detective will stay with you for a long time.)5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few movies that still sends chills down my spine
I remember I saw this movie when I was a kid, and it gave me nightmares.Robert Benton was a genius when he directed this movie. The way he builds up the suspense in certain scenes gives you that creepy feeling.Although the ending is very quiet and somewhat contrived, it has a certain originality to it.5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable movie
I saw this movie years ago, forgot the name, and have been looking for it ever since. If you like a good old scary suspense movie with characters you care about this is for you.It is a movie that is better than the sum ofit's parts and they are darned good. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, Bad, and Yuck
Most people, in today's America, won't get what's wrong with this film. That's born out by the ratings here.Aside from the Hollywood/politically-correct/juvenille-preachiness of this film, there is some fantastic acting in scenes. I purchased this film just to watch those scenes. That's one of the great things about DVDs, you can jump over the ridiculous and go straight to the more artistic work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie with an Amazing Cast
The DVD is great. Lots of Subtitle options not to mention the fact that the Movie is just simply amazing with a great Cast.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with the actors in this movie?
Is it me, or is everyone acting in slow motion in this movie? Horrible, horrible acting. From the initial interrogation, to the talk inside the prison yard, to the trial implicating Gideon, to the review by the Supreme Court. It pained me to see Clarence Gideon try to complete a sentence, and when he did it seemed that everyone hung on his every word. The only bright spots have to go to Tommy Lee Jones for referencing "Appalachicola" and frail Sam Jaffe for having a smaller chair than the other Supreme Court Justices. Other than that, I wanted to slit my wrists watching this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark Film on Land Mark Case
Fonda's performance is perfect, and the film covers all the issues without missing a beat.I use it every year in my government class.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR LEGAL BEAGLES EVERYWHERE...
This is a movie made great by Henry Fonda's compelling portrayal of an unlikely folk hero,Clarence Earl Gideon, who was the catalyst for one of the most significant changes in our legal system. The seminal case of Gideon v. Wainright ultimately saw the United States Supreme Court establish that anyone who is charged with a crime is entitled to legal representation by an attorney.Read more

Alfred Hitchcock takes on Sigmund Freud in this thriller in which psychologist Ingrid Bergman tries to solve a murder by unlocking the clues hidden in the mind of amnesiac suspect Gregory Peck. Among the highlights is a bizarre dream sequence seemingly designed by Salvador Dali--complete with huge eyeballs and pointy scissors. Although the film is in black and white, the original release contained one subliminal blood-red frame, appearing when a gun pointed directly at the camera goes off. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much-Maligned Hitchcock Classic Has Enough Cinematic Bravado to Satisfy Fans
There is one scene in Alfred Hitchcock's 1945 classic that epitomizes what's both cinematically unique and logically wrong about the whole venture. Late in the story, comely therapist Dr. Constance Petersen and her inadvertent patient John Brown (or is it Dr. Anthony Edwardes?) set off skiing on an empty, pristine slope in Gabriel Valley. The two attractive stars are obviously shot standing still against an aggressive wind machine in front of a moving screen matte of the Alpine scenery. It's really a concurrently thrilling and silly-looking shot designed to build suspense, and it's easy to dismiss its artifice until it all ends in a key revelation. The rest of the movie suffers from the same conflicting dilemma, i.e., isolated moments of cinematic bravado that interweave with a preposterous Baroque-level storyline.
5-0 out of 5 stars Early Hitchcock - A Must for all Film History Fans
To see Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman in their youthful prime, that undefinable "star" quality that is so missing in Hollywood's current `celebrity' movement: where talent takes a back seat to appearance, lack of charisma and obsession with youth, was certainly a pleasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will He Kiss Me Or Kill Me?
Ingrid Bergman is a psychoanalyst and, according to her male colleagues, a cold fish. This changes when Gregory Peck shows up as the new head of the psychiatric institution. The only problem is, Peck is not who he says he is. In fact, he doesn't even know who he really is. Bergman is determined to help him find out, but meanwhile, the man whose identity Peck has assumed is missing, perhaps murdered... The psychoanalysis in the film is pure hokum, and the plot's contrivances are perhaps a bit convenient. But Bergman and Peck are terrific, and the Dali dream sequence is as unusual a sight in a Hitchcock film as you could hope for.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Deliberate Stranger
I would say this television movie is a must see for anyone interested in the life and "career" of serial killer Ted Bundy.Mark Harmon does a very respectable job of portraying a man who is charming, intellectual, romantic, charismatic, intellectual, and digustingly despicable, all at the same time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not completely accurate, but great for Bundy followers
I remember seeing this movie on TV when I was a kid, and from that, I became obsessed with serial killers. Not in a bad way...I've just found them fascinating, that they can appear so seemingly ordinary yet they're completely crazy. And we're not just talking a few sandwiches short of a picnic here either. Anyway, if you know about Ted Bundy, you will certainly enjoy this movie, despite some discrepencies in accuracy. I wish they would put this on DVD already! So, if you have ever been interested in Ted Bundy, The Deliberate Stranger will certainly appeal to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written movie.
First of all, I must address the use of the names. It is perfectly understandable that some of the victims' names were not used on this. The reason being that this is still a very sensitive subject for the many that felt the results of Bundy's crimes. He may be dead, but the toll of destruction Bundy has caused cannot be so easily erased by time. I found this to be a good movie because it showed how Det. Keppel, now a PhD, had dealt with the greusome details of this case. It showed the terrible job that police had when they had the terrible duty of telling the parents that their child was not coming home. Bundy is also shown in a somewhat glorified light, except when committing his crimes. It may have been only suggested, but if you really want to see the brutallity of his crime, watch the movie "Ted Bundy" or "The Riverman" which had reference to one of Bundy's crimes in graphic detail. If one is concerned about the names, read Richard Larsen's book bearing the same title, as well as Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me." and a few other books on Bundy. You'll find those are graphic enough. One has to realize that this was made for Television, and for its time it was brutal enough. Bundy's victims weren't Only the ones he killed, but those affected by his crimes. The police, the families, husbands, parents, and lovers. I watched this movie, and the one thing it Did depict was the pain caused by Bundy. After watching some of the films of the same subject matter, I found this one quite accurate. If one is looking for the greusome details, look into the books on said subject. Take this movie for what it was, an observation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'M HERE TO SELL FOR YOU.
It appears I share a not-quite-quilty nostalgia for this creepy/campy/scarily prescient sci-fi/horror flick with most of the reviewers here. Like me, their psyches were indelibly impressed by Susan Dey's collarbone after repeated viewings on HBO as 13-year olds. This was one of my absolute all-time favorite early-80's cable movies. It's about a hot-shot L.A. plastic surgeon (Albert Finney!?) who finds himself beset with models carrying lists of millimeter-precise changes they want in their faces/bodies so they can be Perfect. After two of these models are murdered post-op, he becomes a suspect, and starts to investigate the origin of the computer-mandated quest for Perfection-- a corporation with the rather sinister-sounding name of DIGITAL MATRIX. This movie is VERY 80's in music (great shimmery horror-synth combined with femmy power-pop) and art direction (lots of pastels) so it's fine to go a little MST-3K with it.At the same time, there are some really great scenes (Susan Dey re-shooting the suntan lotion commercial over and over to please The Computer is one that haunts me) and the general concept is not absurd AT ALL... "Hi! I'm Cindy! I'm the Perfect Female Type, 18 to 25. I'M HERE TO SELL FOR YOU!"

3-0 out of 5 stars worth seeing
I won't repeat all the commentary on the plot and acting that many other reviewers have pointed out.I will though make note that Looker was the first movie that used computer graphics for its effects. It was the first and worth looking at for that alone. Before Tron, (although not by much) it was putting something out there that is now commonplace to all movie watchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Want It...I Want It....
Camp dialogue, big hair and glowing, hypnotic eyes...what more could you ask for in a film? When this was first shown on television they added a few scenes...and I only vaguely remember what they were, but involved someone walking on the roof and an extended dinner party.Hopefully whenever they get around to releasing the movie, it will be either an extended version or at least include the deleted scenes. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars: decent movie that has its moments
"Executive Action" was rather cutting-edge for 1973 but pales in comparison to Oliver Stone's "JFK." That said, there are some moments of interest in this moderately-entertaining feature. I like the soundtrack theme music, some of the acting is top-notch, and some of the concepts and pro-conspiracy evidence is right on the money. Interestingly, Ed Lauter is also in "Thirteen Days" (for you trivia buffs out there...)
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best film made about the Coup D ' eta
Hands down most to the point film about the Coup D Eta.We know JFK was struck in the neck and temple. Therefore, weknow Mr. Oswaldwas framed. The film does an excellent job portraying the framing of Lee Oswald. We also know it is being covered up to this day. Therefore, we know it had to an "inside job" since since the Secret Service was ordered not protect the President that day. Classic Coup where the "Kings Men" or palace guard abandon their post so to speak. From the Zapruder film we can see the driver slow down and he and the other agent in the front seat just turn and watch for six seconds until Kennedy is good and dead.Excellent scene in Exectutive Action about the route change and the comunicationblackout immediately after the slaying. 5-0 out of 5 stars If You Haven't Visited Egypt, You'll Want To After Seeing This Movie!
Ever since my first visit to Egypt last fall, I've been on the lookout for all things Egyptian. Had a vague recollection of a book by Robin Cook and borrowed it from my local library. Then decided to check out Amazon.com for a movie and voila! Just bought the video & watched it this weekend. IT IS BETTER THAN THE BOOK!! Probably because the movie is a visual feast. Also, the heroine is less pathetic than in the book and there's no jerk of a boyfriend to cloud things up!I found it interesting to see how dated the male actors looked (hair, clothes) but Lesley Ann Warren was stunning and up-to-date elegant. The movie is a complete treat for those fascinated by ancient Egyptian history and artifacts. And the scenes in the Cairo Museum are marvelous. And the feluccas sailing in the Nile so beautiful and romantic. AND..on and on! Enjoy one and all.

Editorial Review

Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Endearing Last James Bond from Roger
A VIEW TO A KILL is Roger Moore's last James Bond film and it is one of his best. It is the pinnacle of Roger Moore's irony and contradiction to the James Bond established by Sean Connery and brought to fruition by George Lazenby. Here Roger Moore gives greater depth to James Bond than we have ever seen making his performance one of the most endearing. Guy Hamilton established this approach with GOLDFINGER and honed it with his excellent THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, which was a mixture of action and absurdity at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why NO DVD Restorations of Robert Mongomery's Films? Why NO DVD at All?
Simple - with the wit and charm and probably one of the greatest mystery movies of all time, does RobertMontgomery's Night Must Fall still remain on VHS, particularly when VHS is a dying breed - or hey perhaps they (the moviemoney makers) are selling most of Mr. Montgomery's films on VHS so people will but them and then when its announced that VHS is "dead" will they suddenly have their $29.95 digitally restored, Special Edition films of Robert Montgomery Availanle. The greed of our country is finding every little way to squeeze the bucks out of folks - from the standard and always reliable 16 oz Coke to a now 12 oz Coke-and the list of amazingly banking breaking scams continues. Lets at least leave one thing alone and thats a bit of brilliant entertainment that has seen so many people through the World Wars, Depressions, and Social Unrests by providing an affordable way of momentarily escaping the dingy dark corners of Madison Ave. .

4-0 out of 5 stars Talky but fascinating
This movie is almost 70 years old - and still keeps you going to find out how it ends! A tad bit talky - a trait of 30s movies, especially ones adapted from stage plays. But what a great bunch of acting jobs! Dame May Whitty (who played the role on stage) controls the scene as the domineering biddy in the wheelchair, but her 'frightened' scene at the climax of the movie is pure gold. Roz Russell - such a strange role for her ~ why would you put yourself in danger to see if your theory is correct? Robert Montgomery with his ever-present cigarette is mezerizing as the man who may or may not be the murderer. The supporting cast play their roles well - you may have to watch it more than once to catch all their side comments. A great old film.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Watch Ita Hundred Times!
"Night Must Fall" is the type of movie that's great to own because you'll watch it a hundred times--it is a "chicken soup" type movie which has that intangible something which holds up under repeated viewings without getting tiresome. Perhaps because--as in other "cult" movies like "The Bad Seed", "Streetcar Named Desire", "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"--it is a wee bit perverse. Ostensibly a rather conventional "whodunnit", "Night" surprises the viewer by introducing what must have been in 1937 a radical element--the fascination and attraction that Olivia (Rosalind Russel) feels for a cold blooded murderer (Robert Montgomery). Why is she fascinated and attacted to him? Because she's bored with her repressed existence in an isolated house with her bossy aunt, that's why!Danny's very dangerousness, although lethal, is apparently just the jolt Olivia needs to feel alive again, and she's not ready to give it up right away! So she elects to shield him so that he won't be found out. Because this plot twist was unprecedented then (and scarce in films even today), you'll have a great time watching to see how it all works out. As some reviewers have noted, "Night Must Fall" is a bit stagey but as with "The Bad Seed", I don't think this hurts it one bit. Like "Seed", it WAS a stageplay(in 1935) and featured many of the same players before being filmed by MGM (interestingly, the play's author Emlyn Williams himself played the role of Danny). It could be said that Russell seems rather wooden in her role as the repressed niece, but this appears to be the way the character is written, as a woman who is emotionally stunted. It's hard to believe, watching her, that this is only two years before "The Women" and three years before "His Girl Friday". As good as she is however, she finishes third to Dame May Whitty as crochety old Mrs Bramson and Robert Montgomery as Danny, the charming murderer! Dame Whitty devours the scenery with such finesse, and Montgomery is so subtley full of lurking menace (one thinks of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector watching him), that poor Rosalind doesn't stand a chance against them! She got her chance in only a few years however. "Night Must Fall" has it all--humor and suspense in equal parts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kim Novak....Ooooo.....la......la.....!!!
This is a classic film.I was a teenager when I first saw it and I fell in love with Kim Novak just like Jimmy Stewart did---so I was in good company! (And, "once in love always in love!:o) Besides the beautiful Kim Novak, you have Mr. Hitchcock using San Francisco's Fort Point as a backdrop where Kim Novak jumps into the SF Bay.Also used is the little town of San Juan Bautista some miles south of San Francisco. This little town is where the old Spanish Mission is located and important scenes of the movie were shot.If you are "new" to "Vertigo" you must see it!Enjoy!Email is boland7214@aol.co

5-0 out of 5 stars The master filmmaker's finest and most complex film
It is unusual to see a director produce his best work after the age of 50, but that is exactly what Alfred Hitchcock did. Starting in 1948 with "Rope" and ending with "The Birds" in 1963, this was the era of his most inspired films. "Vertigo", in my opinion, is the best film of his entire body of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars FILM NOIR AT ITS CREEPIEST BEST
We've seen it before. Based on an actual case, this Oscar-nominated gem tells the twisted tale of a scheming black widow (played by Barbara Stanwyck) who draws a smooth-talking insurance man (Fred MacMurray) into a wed of intrigue and murder. Their insurance scam goes awry, and the lovers turn against each other as their survival instincts kick in and the stakes get higher and higher. Lust and crime don't pay, and here, with a screenplay by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler, the pay-off is so downright hard-boiled criminal it's brilliant. Film noir just doesn't get more flawless
5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap wig for a cheap dame...
The grand daddy of them all.If you can get over the (intentionally) cheap wig worn by Barbara Stanwyck, there is no disputing this is one of the best of the Film Noir genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Treatment of One of Billy Wilder's Greatest Films!
The super deluxe 2-disc DVD edition of the 1944 film noir classic DOUBLE INDEMNITY (DI) rocks!Director/co-screenwriter Billy Wilder's flair with suspense and black humor works so perfectly with James M. Cain's novel about adulterous lovers plotting to murder the woman's husband and scam the man's insurance company, it even improves on the book. The dark tone and scandalous subject matter freaked out Hollywood so much that it took 9 years to get DI from the printed page to the big screen.Fred MacMurray was the only leading man in Hollywood with the guts to take the role of insurance salesman-turned-murderer Walter Neff, though even MacMurray needed convincing at first.None of the other in-demand male stars of the period wanted Barbara Stanwyck's conniving, money-loving, hubby-offing temptress Phyllis Dietrichson to make a chump out of him.Their loss!(I'd first seen MacMurray when I was a kid.Back then, he was best known to my generation as a Disney movie star and the lovable dad of TV's MY THREE SONS, so it was quite a revelation to me when I saw him playing underhanded types in DI, THE APARTMENT, and THE CAINE MUTINY.MacMurray had more range than he got credit for!)
