Editorial Review

The ethics of the press are roundly slapped around in an entertaining if not always believable drama from director Sydney Pollack. Sally Field is the Miami reporter who is set up to leak information on a dead-end murder investigation. A sneaky government official (a marvelous, rubber-band-spinningBob Balaban) provides the information that implies liquor distributor Paul Newman is under investigation. When the story runs, it uncorks a legal quagmire that puts the spotlight on presumably innocent lives. As the lawyers explain, the paper's story is accurate, even though it may be untrue. The details of the story are sharply drawn by first-time screenwriter and former reporter Kurt Luedtke (who later went on to win an Oscar scripting Pollack's Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars SEY GOO'BYE TO MUH WORTHLESS FILM!
The first time I saw this film, age, I think, 14 or 15, I hated it.It was absolutely horrid - the acting, the music, the cinematography, everything. Then a few years later I gave it a second chance, and I thought it was pretty good, at least good enough to buy.
5-0 out of 5 stars On DVD, yet again...
Brian De Palma's blood soaked gangster epic is on DVD, once again.I'll say this right off the bat, if you own the previously released Special Edition of Scarface, there's no reason to run out and buy this Platinum Edition, which has an assortment of previously released extras to go along with a counter for how many times the "F" word is used and how many bullets are fired.Besides that, there's nothing here that hasn't been seen before, but if you don't already own Scarface on DVD, well then, this is worth picking up.As for the film itself, it's a bloody crime epic featuring one of Al Pacino's best, and most infamous, performances as Cuban hood turned drug kingpin Tony Montana; but chances are, you already know all that. The DVD's picture quality looks cleaner, and the "remastered and remixed" sound is crisper as well, but whether or not you want to lay down the cash for this depends on how many times you've been suckered into buying the movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Say hello to my little friend!"
`Scarface' is one of those classic films that, even though it wasn't recognized by prestigious awards ceremonies as worthy, it'll be remembered far longer than films like `Crash' and `Million Dollar Baby'.Why?Well for starters it's really what made Al Pucino famous.Sure, he was in `The Godfather' films and he was brilliant in them (the Oscar nods prove that) but to me `The Godfather' belongs to Brando, but `Scarface', not that is in all respects Al's picture, from start to finish, it belongs to Pucino.

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL not Agiprop
I don't know what that person from Miami(below) is talking about? NO credible sources that can validate the high death toll in Panama?? MY FAMILY IS FROM PANAMA and they were there, they lived it along with all of the other PANAMANIANS and you know what else?... There are dozens upon dozens of people in the neighborhood of Chorillo with missing limbs. They are not faking it!! But it seems some people just can't fathom that just because the US has not OFFICIALLY reported it, it doesn't mean it didn't happen! OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE! This is not "Anti-American propaganda" It is the truth plain and simple, and if seeking the truth makes us ANTI AMERICAN then we are a truely sad lot indeed!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, One Of The Best Mob Movies Ever
For a solid mix of action, drama and thrills, "The Untouchables" delivers like few movies can. Thanks to a fantastic cast, great story and a solid script, this is one of the most entertaining movies you will ever see in your life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie
Kevin Costner is not too bad in this late 80s film focused loosely on Chicago in the 1920s and the Al Capone gangster crime syndicate.Costner plays Eliott Ness, the federal treasury agent assigned to get Capone. It's a fun story and well played out.I'm not sure how historically accurate it is, but the acting overall is pretty good (Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Andy Garcia, et al.) and I enjoyed the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe De Palma's best...
Yes, I'm a De Palma fanboy. But I truly don't understand how anyone could watch the Untouchables and not absolutely love this movie. The performances are amazing.Connery in his Oscar-winning role as Malone.De Niro as Al Capone is totally classic.Even good ol' Kevin Costner does a good job as Eliot Ness, even if he is completely overshadowed by his costars. To go along with the great performances, there is an amazing, award-winning score by Ennio Morricone. The score gives the feel of 1930 and has both an upbeat aspect, and an aspect of overwhelming dread that can be felt in many of the scenes. The final great part of The Untouchables: Brian De Palma. His direction in the film is unbelievable. The train station sequence is one of the greatest sequences in film that I can remember. His use of very graphic violence goes to serve the purpose of the film that Chicago at this time was a dangerous, ultra-violent, brutal place to live in.Just an amazing film.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY still not on DVD? Great movie!
Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott steal the movie!. It is a real pitywe don't have the wonderful Jack Lemmon still around with us to bring us fine pieces of work like this. We'll miss you, Jack. :(5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
As a high school science teacher I deal with common myths and misconceptions involving evolution on a daily basis. This movie does a nice job of helping kids understand the passion of the issue.Evolution is the cornerstone of modern day biology and it is important kids understand why it needs to be taught. The amazing thing about science is that if evidence comes along to disprove a current school of thought, the discipline may change. When religion is questioned the only response is to lash out with hostility and anger. Why can't we question the way Man believes in God?

5-0 out of 5 stars Inherit the Wind (1999)
A truly excellent remake of an American classic.Once you get past any inital reservations you may (understandably) have about the film'smade-for-cable origins, you will find a work that is, in my opinion, justas engaging as the 1960 version. Two gripes: 1.As mentioned by anotherreviewer, the direction and camera work is a bit static and elementary. 2.As also mentioned by another reviewer, Beau Bridges at times is tooobnixious and over the top.On the other hand, Jack Lemmon and GeorgeC. Scott (in his final performace) are absolutely riveting.Piper Laurieis also very compelling as Scott's sympathetic and diplomatic wife. This incarnation of the film is extremely faithful to its predecessor, virtually a frame by frame re-shoot. Yet the dialouge, performaces andsubject matter are just as fresh and stirring as they were 40 years ago.Fans of the 1960 release should certainly enjoy, or at least appreciatethis latest adaption. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Film Is Magic.
Why? Because the movie is about 12 men in a jury, who decide if the pleaded is guilty, or not. I still didn't answer the question. Somehow, they talk and argue for over and hour and a half, and SOME HOW we are still drawn to the screen and we can't take our eyes off of it for a second!

5-0 out of 5 stars They Don't Get Much Cooler Than This
Movies and movie characters just don't come cooler than they do in "Cool Hand Luke." The movie's legendary. Almost everyone has seen it, almost everyone has loved it, and almost everyone thinks it's Paul Newman's best performance. Having only seen Newman in 2 movies, I don't know if that's true or not...But it's possible. Newman plays Luke, who is sentenced to 2 years on the chain gang for destroying munincipal property (he was cutting the heads off parking meters). The chain gang is a pretty unpleasant place; The Captain (Strother Martin) is a sadistic man with a very strange voice, the work environment is harsh...But unlike most prison-oriented movies, all the characters are pretty cool. One of the characters that Luke quickly befriends is Dragline (George Kennedy, who won an Oscar for his portrayal and definitely deserved it), who finds Luke intriguing. Indeed he is, he's one of the most intriguing and coolest characters I've ever seen on screen. Throughout the whole movie, he makes the best of his situation (even though he frequently attempts to escape). No matter what is done to him, it never breaks his spirit. Not even in the final scene. This movie's a year away from hitting 40 years old and it hasn't aged a bit. It's still as entertaining and as relevant as it was 39 years ago. All the performances are wonderful (two familar faces have small roles in the movie; Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton (who was billed as "Dean Stanton") and incredibly likeable. There's many classic scenes in the film ("What we've got here is failure to communicate" and the "egg-eating scene" and the final scene). I know people who don't like old movies. If it came out after 1980, they won't watch it. I think not liking this movie is difficult; It's the epitome of good entertainment.
5-0 out of 5 stars What we got here... A failure to communicate!!!
Okay, the only real extras on the DVD is a theatrical trailer for the film and some biographical information on the movie and it's stars, but Warner Bros. gets a five star rating for great picture and sound and the option of BOTH Standard Full Frame and Widescreen versions on one disc!!! This movie is an absolute classic!!! And it's great to have it on DVD!!! One of the great "men in chains" films!!! The great cast includes Paul Newman,George Kennedy(in his oscar winning role!),Wayne Rogers,Strother Martin,Joe Don Baker,Ralph Waite, and many other classic character actors!!! Two thumbs up!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars ASHAMED!!!
I am a little ashamed that my first review on Amazon wasn't this movie, instead I reviewed King Kong (new remake) - SHAME ON ME!!! This movie is fantastic! I remember watching it as a very young child and was mezmerized by it! It has a story, a creative concept, and a steller cast. The idea at the time was exciting because it was around the time of The Greatest American Hero and has some of the same kind of humor in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD - Disney please re-release it
This is one of those movies that would have been a massive hit if it had had a star in it. However it is still a great movie with fantastic action set pieces and pretty good jokes. If you want to ask Disney to let you know when it's re-released use the link on the Disney DVD website and then follow instructions to be 'emailed when it is available'. (Can't post the link here on Amazon as it's a no no to include web addresses so do a search for Condorman on the Disney DVD site).

It is so great to see so many other fans of this movie.I read the book "Outrageous Conduct" after I had seen the movie and I will never look at it the same way again!Landis may have been breaking the rules with children working after hours and a helicopter on such a small set, but the fact remains that it was in fact an accident!A tragic and regretable one, to be sure, but still an accident.

According to your opinions on wanting to punish John Landis for the "accident" that killed two children and Vic Morrow, you all act like Mr. Landis programmed and planned the entire incident just to kill three people! How infantile can you possibly be?

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Classics
This video contains what are perhaps the two best-known and loved TWILIGHT ZONE titles, "Time Enough at Last" and "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."The former episode stars Burgess Meredith as a bookish bank teller named Henry Bemis.Scolded by his boss and his wife for being "a reader," Bemis retires to the bank's vault each day during his lunch hour to indulge his passion. One day while he is reading in the vault, a nuclear explosion happens and the earth is turned into a wasteland.Stumbling upon the remains of a public library, Bemis declares that now he has all the time in the world to read - but does he really?Serling's script for "Time Enough at Last" is whimsical though ultimately tragic, with similarities to both "The Obsolete Man" (also with Meredith) and "The Lonely."

Editorial Review

The Arab anti-defamation leagues understandably had a field day with this one. Sally Field plays Betty Mahmoody, an American who marries an Iranian (Alfred Molina) and has a child. They go back to Iran for a visit and, to her horror, he tells her he's decided to stay there. If she wants to leave, she must leave her daughter behind. If she stays, Betty must live in a culture vastly different and, she believes, very dangerous. Part thriller, part culture clash, the film certainly takes advantage of Americans' perceptions of Iran after the unrest of the '70s and early '80s. Molina is truly despicable as the husband, while Field projects a lot of overheated anguish as Betty tries to figure out a way to escape the country with her daughter. Overheated, in fact, is the word for the whole melodrama. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cultural misunderstanding
This moview represents a one-sided view of a rich and ancient culture and has portrayed it unfairly as a backward society. The story might have some truth to it, but it is a great manifestation of miscimmunication between two cultures or two individuals from two different cultures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Multi-Cultural View of Domestic Violence
This movie was good, but as usual the book was far better. I think it showed that her husband had some tendencies towards wanting to dominate his wife, which turned into full-blown abuse under the stresses of losing his job & medical license, and returning to Shiite Iran after decades of living in the United States.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Book, but Still an Okay Movie!Events in Movie/Book may have been Exaggerated or Downright False!
Before I saw this movie, I read the book by Betty Mahmoody, which this movie is based on. The book was very detailed, and fairly intense, so when I saw the movie, I was somewhat disappointed to see the truth in the statement that "Movies are Never as Good as the Actual Book"

5-0 out of 5 stars Distinquished gothic thriller.
Those who tiresomely belabor the inadequacy of the snakes on the Gorgon's head at the film's conclusion entirely miss the point. It is not surprising in our cretinous era that some would lament the unavailability of computer generated special effects in 1964. That they persist in doing so, however, only serves to illustrate how very far these modernists are in both sensibility and aesthetic principles from the 19th century Gothic tradition that this film so faithfully seeks to reproduce. The point isn't the snakes but the psychological force behind the baleful facial expression!

"The Gorgon," to my mind, is one of the greatest Hammer films ever -- in fact, I'd say it's a great film of any kind, and through it, I can appreciate what makes Hammer horror films so enduringly popular.

Hammer's 1964 The Gorgon is crying out for a DVD widescreen release on both sides of the Atlantic. This underrated film is a mesmerizing fantasy that brings together ancient mythology and Hammer's best gothic style under the expert direction of stalwart Terence Fisher.

Think what you want, Doris Day was a fine actress. This has to be one of her best. She did drama as well as comedy (remember "The Man Who Knew Too Much"? Hitchcock loved blondes...)
