4-0 out of 5 stars Dont ya hate the cover
makes it look like a horror movie or something. Its a great movie.Woman get buried alive by her husband because he wants out of the marriage but he wouldnt get anything out of it. hes cheating on her.he figures if his wife dies then he gets the money and so he has her buried alive saying to embalm her twice to see that shes dead which obviously doesnt happen because the movie is called "buried alive" and not "embalmed alive".well wifey wakes up and comes back to give her boy what he deserves.great movie.i woulda watched it sooner but the movie was put out to be a horror when actually its not..its kind of a drama suspense thing.not even much violence really..

3-0 out of 5 stars Coincidences Lead The Way To Death.
'Buried Alive' is not a movie about zombies. In fact it holds a degree of realism. It's about a woman, who gets poisoned by her husband and buried in the cemetary when she's still alive. Of course, people don't know this. Her husband's motive is to get the money she received as heritage and move away with his mistress. To ensure that she doesn't get out of the graveyard, he asks that his wife is mummified twice. However, things don't work out as they should; and she's put into the coffin without being mummified at all. With a few more coincidences, she will make her way out somehow; and, it will be her revenge when she arrives home and sees her husband with his mistress.5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing movie
Don't be fooled by this movie's virtually unknown status. It is amazing. The plot is stunning, and it leaves you with an awesome sense of good & evil.I have not seen the first one, and you definitely don't need to to understand everything that goes on. This movie also strikes me as an allegory of sorts. The wife is an almost Messianic figure, and the final scene pictures hell better than any other movie I have ever scene. The ending will send chills up and down your spine.Read more

Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in this intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. 5-0 out of 5 stars Liked it the first time I saw it, only gets better with age.
I saw this movie in the cinema when it was released in 1995.I came out satisfied with what I'd seen, but not stunned.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best movies of its kind! Mind-blowing
Having watched this movie several times, I have to say that it still has the same allure which it had when I first watched it 11 years ago. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good action or character driven drama. This is, in my opinion, an all-time classic and a must-own movie -ranking right up there with the likes of Casablanca, Tombstone or Saving Private Ryan. All of the characters in this movie are first-rate and pull the plot together superbly. The authenticity behind the all of the characters and the scenes is very impressive and adds a great deal of depth to the film. It boasts a fantastic balance between action and character development - with the extra time used to really get you involved with the characters and to see what is driving them as people. Some may say that this movie is too long, but it is time well-spent and can be appreciated by those who like to get involved with the characters and not just watch a storyline unfold. I really appreciate how the movie portrays both the "good guys" and "bad guys" - involving both of them in the story. This is truly an epic movie and deserves to be watched by anyone who appreciates a truly great movie. If you watch it once - you will want to see it again. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. Along with Hitchcock's other films from the mid-1950s to 1960 (including Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A great Warner Olan film
An excellent chan film. lots of mystery. a little soft ed on quinine which was indeed used for various ailments back in the olden days. I agree with another reader about Warner Olan on DVD.I have purchased budget dvd's with 2,3 or 4 programs on one DVD and I would suspect the right medium could do the same with some of the chan films.

4-0 out of 5 stars NICE ATMOSPHERIC CHAN MYSTERY
AS much as the Chan movies are filled with ridiculous stereotypes it's sad that Turner Classic Movies stopped showing these films due to protests from Asian Americans.Stereotypes aside these films always showed Chan in a positive light and above all provided great entertainment.I used to love staying up with my dad as a kid and watching these on the late show. Those were the days!
3-0 out of 5 stars Minor But Amusing Entry In The Charlie Chan Series
Charlie Chan films are frequently accused of pandering to racial stereotypes. There is a certain truth to this, but Charlie Chan and company were neither more nor less stereotypical than such other popular series as the "Blondie" or "Dr. Kildare" series, and--while we may occasionally roll our eyes at a few 1930s sensibilities--its stereotypes are never mean-spirited and Charlie (along with his various sons) is always presented in a positive light.

Editorial Review

Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin's version of Peter Straub'sbestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it's available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It's still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she's back(with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub's hands it was, and the novel remains the author's finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub's rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. Read more

I read all 55 reviews of this movie and I noticed that some felt that the movie fell far short of the Peter Straub book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Story
The story line wasn't bad.The beginning seemed scattered, but once you got more into the story it made sense.Had a bit of nudity in it which I could have done without.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real ghost story.
A true ghost story in EVERY sense of the word. A story you tell while sitting around a campfire latr at night as a kid. A star studded cast doesn't hurt, either. An under-rated Alice Krige truly makes this movie. If you are looking for a good ghost movie that will give you chills and have you keeping the light on when you go to bed, this is it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The final fate of Special FBI Agent Dale Cooper and the folks of Twin Peaks
With this final set of episodes the cult classic television series "Twin Peaks" comes to an end. It is not so much that these are bad episodes per se, but given the high standard David Lynch and company created during the best moments of the first season, they all suffer in comparison. Plus, the final scene is the textbook example of adding insult to injury for a fans dealing with the cancellation of the series:
4-0 out of 5 stars A couple of average episodes lead up to the most chilling hour of television ever.
After it was revealed who killed Laura Palmer the series didn't seem to have any clear direction. This may be one of the things that led to the show's decline and cancellation and if that wasn't bad enough David Lynch ends the series with the most nightmarish episode ever leaving fans choking on their damn fine cups of coffee. The next to last episode ends with an eerie strobelit confrontation but it's the last episode itself that delivers the real chills.Agent Coopers journey into the mysterious otherworldly Red Lodge is supremely creepy.Beginning with the hypnotic song Under the Sycamore Trees(Which you can find on the Twin Peaks:Fire Walk With Me soundtrack)to agent Cooper being pursued from room to room by his evil dopelganger.Masterfully directed by David Lynch it's equal to any of his best creepy movies like Lost Highway.Like being woken up in a middle of a nightmare it will leave you hanging but will stay in your mind forever.I don't remember T.V. shows I've seen last night but the final episode of Twin Peaks still haunts me 15 years later.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOULD YOU LIKE SOME COFFEE?
This image of the Red Room, this world of Twin peaks is horrifying!! I must admit I cried for hours after the ending of this show. I was extremely depressed, I still get depressed about and the first time I watched it was in January 2000. I really love this tape. I love TWIN PEAKS. It needs more to it. I want Lynch to direct another TWIN PEAKS movie!! I want MORE!!! PEAKS IN MY MIND HASN'T DIED. FRANKLY, I see Peaks still around, in a spooky world!!!! ... Read more

Director Oliver Stone added 17 minutes of previously unseen footage for the "director's cut" edition of his hypnotic courtroom epic about the investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. That fateful day in Dallas set in motion a sequence of events that would only intensify the mystery behind Kennedy's death, causing New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) to begin an investigation that would gradually become a personal obsession. Bravura filmmaking combined with controversial treatment of historical facts and audacious speculation, this breathtaking revision of history presents a mesmerizing parade of shady figures and conspiracy theories, unfolding like a classic mystery based on history's greatest unsolved crime. A technical triumph boasting Oscar-winning cinematography and editing, Stone's film is guaranteed to grab the viewer's attention with its daring take on the JFK controversy. The stellar supporting cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pesci, Jack Lemmon, Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Kevin Bacon, and Gary Oldman as Lee Harvey Oswald. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic documentary about the truth behind official"outrageous"version.
I have to say to all people that I have never believed in the official version. This seemed as an absolute farse since the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated to the memory of JFK,1917-1963
Ladies and gentlemen, citizens,it is with humble respect that director Oliver Stone presents the investigation of the death of a great American,John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. It was Stone's hope and intention, that this courtroom epic, which runs for approximately three and a half hours, will become a living memory and an inspiration to both current and future generations. Kevin Costner is Jim Garrison,a district attorney who represents Lee Harvey Oswald who was accused of Kennedy's November 22,1963 assassination in Dallas. Sissy Spacek is Jim's wife. This film also features special appearances by Kevin Bacon and the late John Candy. Unlike Kennedy,then-Texas governor(now deceased) John B. Connolly survived the shooting although he was wounded. I dedicate this film to the memory of Kennedy and the surviving members of his family. Stone should make epics about the lives and post-presidency deaths of Lyndon B. Johnson,Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan. I'm sure Nixon and Reagan saw this film(they were both alive in 1991 when this film was theatrically released). I'm also sure that Gerald Ford,Jimmy Carter,Bill Clinton,George W. Bush and Bush's father saw this film also.

1-0 out of 5 stars a conspiricy theorists secret dream
Think of this, I am Garrison, in this movie played by Kevin Costner, and my hero JFK has been shot, so what do I do?In my position as a prosicutor I go on a fanciful investigation of this horrible murder of a much beloved president, in which I find no real evidence but, prosicute someone anyway. And then, at the end I run into this guy on the mall in Washington who no one else sees, says he is one of "THEM", wears a dark suit and confirms absolutely everything I already knew but couldn't proove.Thats It I prooved it you must now beleive me!I am now smarter than the Warren Commision.Sorry for the sarcasam, the only thing that can be considered of any historical merit in this movie is the wonderful example of conspiricy theory mythology, which not only exists, but is held very sacred by some. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable Cartland telemovie
Filmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland.DUEL OF HEARTS is the story of Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody), who literally stumbles across the path of handsome Lord Vane Brecon (Benedict Taylor).Vane, who has been wrongfully accused of murder, hides a shameful family secret.Caroline, under the alias of Miss Fry, decides to enter the employ of his household in order to help him.A fascinating tale, filled with Cartland's always-enjoyable and potent mix of romance and heart-pounding adventure. The cast also includes Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Virginia McKenna, Billie Whitelaw, Beryl Reid, Adalberto Maria Merli, Suzanna Hamilton and Margaret Mazzantini.

5-0 out of 5 stars Male critics are for the birds.
I will never know why they choose a male critic to review the historical romance movies that we women love. Over 50% of books sold are romance, and still they don't get it, I have watched the TNT movies several times, and wish that they would make some new ones, they take us away from everyday life where we can fanasize about a handsome hero & heroine who are not involved in car chases and beating each other up every 5 mins. Time to get Marcus Gilbert from Hazard of Hearts & A Ghost in Monte Carlo, back to work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But a Little Disappointing/ PG
I enjoyed this movie but it was a little disappointing, and was not at all what I expected. It was a very suspenseful, interesting and gripping story. It is not your typical Christmas movie though, and although it gives you a warm feeling at the end, it is quite depressing in parts.I thought Kurt Russell did an excellent job in his role as Johnny (He is so adorable). He was the hero in the story, so his fans will really enjoy this one.I found Melissa Gilbert to be a bit flat in her performance and it was hard to get used to her being a bratty child (throwing a rock through a store window, etc).It is natural to expect Laura I suppose, as it was filmed in the 70's when Little House on the Prairie was in its heyday.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars squirmy psycho thriller with a pair of excellent performances
I saw this at the Seattle Film festival in '89 and thought it was quite cool. The casting of Colin Firth was a coup for the filmmakers; he projects the squirmiest sense of psychosis since Anthony Perkins. There are a series of escalatingly creepy scenes between Firth and his crazy mother. Yikes! The gay subtext between Colin Firth's character and Hart Bochner's is nicely played by both actors. I liked the fact that the film wasn't shot or set in the United States. This is a hard film to classify. Is it a serial killer thriller? sort of. Is it a psycho film like REPULSION or The Tenant? Sort of. It has a lot of layers to it and that is something i liked about Apartment Zero. Worth seeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glued to the Screen
Several years ago I worked at a public library and the library had this film on VHS. I was astounded at how good the movie was as I had never heard of it previously. Over the years I would reccommend it to patrons who would ask if I knew of any interesting movies. Without exception, they would always return and tell me how good the movies was, and ask if I could suggest something similar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Movie
I first saw this film at the NuArt in L.A. when it first came out. I had no idea what the movie was about, and maybe that's why I liked it so much. Going in blind, without having heard anything, made the film so much more powerful. For years, I thought about the film and then I rented it again when staying at the Paramount hotel in NY. And the film lived up to my memory. Now, that I own it, I watch this film over and over, and honestly, I'm not sure why. None of my friends like it nearly as much as I do. But there is something about the relationship between the two main characters, as well as the relationships with the people in the building that resonates with me. ... Read more

I thought the TV version did not do justice to the book nor to the development of the characters. The producers should have stuck to the book.Cliff Roberton was very good and so was Season Hubley although her character in the book is much more interesting and complex.

4-0 out of 5 stars A made for TV movie that is close to the book
If you have seen "Eye of the Needle" (1981), then you will probably like this movie as they are both good adaptations of Ken Follett Novels. However this one was a mini series on TV so there was not as much thought put in to it as if it were a made for theater movie. However the film was made in Tunisia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Noir-esque cold-case thriller.
Jimmy Stewart and Lee J. Cobb star in this noir-esque cold-case thriller.Stewart plays the hard-nosed big-city reporter in 1942 who is assigned to investigate a cop-killer case from 1932.Stewart becomes involved in the case when he reports on the sad story of the old lady who scrubs floors for a living and saves every dime to get her convict son out of prison. The story is very popular with the news-paper reading public, so Stewart is assigned to investigate the case.Stewart cynically follows the leads, believing that the convict is guilty but following the human interest angle.Ultimately he becomes convinced of his subject's innocence and Stewart is involved in race against the clock to get the falsely accused man out of prison.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answering the call at Northside 777
A really good film noir from Jimmy Stewart. It has a documentary style that may come off a little stilted today but is still a fine character piece. The film remains suspenseful until the end and has a "good" ending but not necessarily the "happy" ending. The climactic scene has a plot hole you can drive a truck through, but who cares?Jimmy Stewart is in great form as a cynical reporter. There is fine support coming from Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte. Its a tale of guilt and innocence in gangland Chicago.

4-0 out of 5 stars When Reporters Were the Good Guys
Jimmy Stewart plays a Chicago newspaper reporter. His editor is intrigued by a simple add in the paper. A reward of $5000 is offered for information on the murder of a policeman. The murder is over a decade old. A man has already been convicted of the murder and is serving a life sentence. What interest, the editor wants to know, would anybody have in an old murder? He assigns Jimmy Stewart to find out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say something once, why say it again?
This is one of those films that preys on the fears and emotions of its viewers, but does it rather well. It purposely contrives situations in order to gain our sympathies for the characters it wants. "Lethal Weapon 2" did this by having the evil South African government offical proclaim, "Diplomatic immunity!" after committing a heinous crime. In "Dirty Harry," the Scorpio Killer claims police brutality after receiving a well-deserved beating. Makes for a nice story and usually achieves its goal, though it simultaneously insults us as viewers. Nonetheless, I have a weakness for serial killer movies, especially when written well. This one is particularly memorable because it features Clint Eastwood in the title role, though Andy Robinson is at least as remarkable as the Scorpio Killer. Harry Callahan is dubbed "Dirty" because he refuses to play by the rules. He represents the biggest challenge to the killer, so the cat and mouse game ensues. Can Harry stop him before he kills again? Long a fantasy for upstanding citizens, this film is increasingly on its way toward becoming a reality (courtesy the NRA), due to laws permitting concealed handguns and to shoot now, ask questions later. Fed-up citizens with firearms are exactly what America needs to be great once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, violent, and shattering....and funny, too....
The film critic Pauline Kael referred to this film as a "fascist" film, implying that simply because a cop who was disgusted by idiotic paperwork and having to obey bureaucrats and politicians who understand nothing about the world we live in decided to take an unconventional approach to fighting crime.Believe me, liberals like police, too. They're not going to care about certain people's rights when it comes to having a safe neighborhood. But then on the flip side, conservatives have never really liked civil liberties, unless they're arrested, then they want as many liberties as they can get.I personally hate when people with political axes to grind drag a film into their idiotic little world, because they're out to prove their point, and they'll distort the meaning of the film. It'll leave a bad taste in your mouth after you've seen it, because you've heard the verbose intellectuals talk and talk and talk and talk about it ad nauseum. This is a great film, one of Clint's best and the best film in the Dirty Harry series. It's intelligent, exciting, and funny as hell. It's politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing.Life is politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing also. There are many great setpieces, such as the opening bank robbery, the speech on why they call him Dirty Harry, the scene where they shoot Scorpio, and the final scene.A masterpiece....

5-0 out of 5 stars GO for it, Harry!
I'm awaiting my copy of "Dirty Harry" - then I'll have all five of the...well, "Dirty Harry" movies.Let the snivling liberals whine about "police brutality," "read him his rights," ad nauseum - you can just BET that there are a LOT MORE of us that condone everything Harry does and stands for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DON'T MISS!
This adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel Sparkling Cyanide (aka Remembered Death) by Sue Grafton (yes THAT Sue Grafton),Steven Humphreys and Robert Malcolm is a a great mystery movie. Not completely faithful tothe original--the movie opens prior to Rosemary's death instead of one yearafter, Southern California vs. WWII England--but the main elements of thestory are there, and it's a tight, well-written adapting of the plot.I'veseen the movie many times and recently re-read the book and I couldn't saywhich I prefer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars where's the DVD??
I have the tape. Years ago I switched to DVD and no longer have a VHS tape player, would love to see this on DVD! Come on Criterion pick this up and do it right!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing performances
Lyle Kessler's powerful play brought very stagely to the screen, featuring three extraordinary performances. Two bothers share a dilapidated house in Newark. The older brother, Treat (Matthew Modine), is a petty thief with a wild temper who steals to put food on the table. The younger boy, Philip (Kevin Anderson), is kept a prisoner in the house, afraid to go out for fear of germs and a million other "dangers." Treat has complete control of him (he calls it "taking care" of him). One day Treat brings home a loud drunk (Albert Finney) he met in a bar with the idea of rolling him; he learns the guy is rich and decides to kidnap him. Finney becomes a surrogate father to the boys, getting Philip not to fear the world so much and Treat to control his temper and not hate so much (though less successfully). It is obvious throughout that we are watching a stage production tranferred onto film, and character development evolves only as it would on a stage and not as it might on film. But the three characters (and the writing) are so powerful that they are amazing to watch. A truly brilliant production. So where's the DVD??

5-0 out of 5 stars This superb film should be on DVD!!
Orphan Treat (Matthew Modine) has built a fiercely protected life for his younger brother Phillip (Kevin Anderson) in their crumbling family home. While Treat provides a subsistence living through petty theft, Phillip stays home, living in an extended childhood of play and fear of the outside world. But when Treat brings home Harold, a suave crook on the run and an orphan himself, all three lives are forever changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fritz Lang intrigue with a twist - rightly 4 1/2 stars
The affable Edward G. Robinson plays criminal psychology professor Richard Wanley in "The Woman in the Window".After spiriting his wife and children away on vacation he goes to his club to spend time with his friends, one of whom being D.A. Lalor played by the angular Raymond Massey.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have no designs on you."
In the classic film noir "The Woman in the Window" mild-mannered psychology Professor Richard Wanley (Edgar G Robinson) is left to his own devices when his wife and children go off on holiday without him. He spends the evening at his club with two of his close friends, and on the way home, Professor Wanley stops to gaze in a gallery window at a portrait of a beautiful young woman. Oddly enough, the model for the portrait arrives on the scene, and she strikes up a conversation with Wanley. 4-0 out of 5 stars Forget the ending and enjoy the film
Yes, the ending does look like it is tacked on and it does spoil a wonderful piece of film noir. The film does not mince words. One drink, one dalliance and you are on the way to the electric chair. There is one straight and narrow and you'd better not cross that line. Edward G. Robinson does cross that line and pays the penalty.Read more
