5-0 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka
Wow this is one of the best family movies ever made.Though Johnny Depp was OK albeit more than a bit creepy in the 2005 movie, Gene Wilder will always be the only Willy Wonka for me.Sure the movie is a bit dated in regards to a 70's look and no modern special effects but does it really matter? This book is so true to Dahl's original children's book and the songs, characters and sets match up exactly to what I envision when I read it.I love Jack Albertson as Grandpa too.Even if you have seen the modern film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory you must treat yourself to watching this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat Gene Wilder as Wonka
He will ever be the image of Willie Wonka. No one else will ever come close.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Child's Paradise
"Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" is one of those rare films that bridges the child-adult film gap.Persons of all ages can watch, eyes wide, and revel in Willy Wonka's eccentricities and Charlie's inate goodness and splendid luck. The film, more than 30 years old, hardly feels its age.Made in a time before computerized special effects, the relative cheese quotient only serves to make the film that much more charming.

Gérard Depardieu plays a court composer at Versailles whose sense of artistic emptiness causes him to reflect upon his old music teacher (Jean-Pierre Marielle), a man who taught him more than music but whom he ultimately betrayed. (The younger version of Depardieu's character is portrayed by the actor's son, Guillaume.) Alain Corneau's gorgeous 1991 film has a slow, deliberative air about it, with little dialogue and a painterly look (shot by cinematographer-director Yves Angelo, maker of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly viol music
To the excellent reviews below I can add only that the music of this film is spectacular, unique.Jordi Savall is supreme master of his instruments. I live on an island my CD of the sound track blends well with the sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars to the depths of the male soul
The best representation of two men's love and respect for one another that has ever been put to film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Film On Great But Obscure Composers
Alain Corneau's 1991 film on the life of Marin Marais and his mentor, Christophe de Sainte-Colombe: composers prominent in 17-18th century France under the reign of Louis XIV. This is a good film in which the philosphical emphasis on music makes it perhaps a little slow in some parts.

Editorial Review

Joshua Logan's 1967 film of the hit Broadway musical about the love triangle between King Arthur (Richard Harris), Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero) is strong on star emphasis and weak on such fundamentals as story and sets. Except for a handful of solidly dramatic scenes--such as Guenevere grieving, late in the film, for the ruination she and Lancelot have caused--there's not a lot to get excited about. (The story's theme of a lost, great society, however, certainly struck a chord in the 1960s.) The Lerner-Loewe songs ("If Ever I Would Leave You," "Camelot") pretty much sell themselves, even if they are, at best, only proficiently performed in this movie.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even a fleeting whisp of glory in this movie flop!
Camelot was a Broadway hit in 1960 and defined the era when John F Kennedy was president. Its original Broadway cast was the stuff of legend:Richard Burton as Arthur, Julie Andrews as his queen, Guinevere, and Robert Goulet as the dashing Sir Lancelot. With a score by Lerner and Loewe it remains a musical treasure that is often revived.
2-0 out of 5 stars TALE OF THE DANCING NOSE-HAIRS
"Camelot" on Broadway was cursed with the most excrutiatingly boring book that droned on and on and on.But the production was blessed with a stellar cast including Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet and an excellent score which included "If Ever I Would Leave You" powerfully sung by Mr. Goulet.
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!!!
I saw this film when I was a child on a film reel my mother borrowed from the library.I was taken back to magic and music when I watched this again. The story is classic. The costumes are fantastic, a true sparkling moment for hollywood. They don't make films like this one anymore.I am not usually a fan of musicals but this one is a definate pleasure to watch.enjoy ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Doris day sings, "10,432 Sheep".
James Cagney is an angry, crazy choreagrapher and he also likes to bet on horses. On a deal, he must go to West Point to help this man's nephew Gordon MacRae become a musical star in the Army Theatre instead of becoming an Army Lieutenant. There is also some old history with Doris Day who comes in later in the film. When he gets to West Point, he finds Gordon MacRae in an all-male musical. No woman cast.Alan Hale Jr. (Gilligan's Island) is playing a princess.Virginia Mayo is trying to hold the fort together.Cagney will go to Las vegas if he succeeds with the deal. They talk cagney into becoming a cadet.cagney then must go to new York to bring Doris Day to West Point to play the Princess in the Army play. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ra Ra Ra Ra West Point Story Is Good
Elwin Bixby (James Cagney) is the owner of a Night Club and is a down on his luck man who has been engaged to his sweet Girl Eve (Virginia Mayo) for 2 years well Eve tries to get him help so she gets him a job helping out with the West Point Academy Annual Musical their they meet Harry Eberhart (Gordon MacRae) who is the brains of the play and the one who wrote it up but one problem they have no girls to play the girls role but Bix promises the boys if they will help him out he will get Jan Wilson (Doris Day) to play the part. Well when they hear that they are all happy about the show so he gets her. And Harry and Jan fall in love the play is a hit to! Great Movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun musical with lots of singing and dancing
Set at West Point, this musical centers on Elwin Bixby's (James Cagney) misadventures as he tries to stage a show at the academy while trying to lure the young talented soldier Tom Fletcher (Gordon MacRae) away from army life and into showbusiness.Convinced that Tom's voice has star potential, Bixby uses pretty movie star Jan Wilson (Doris Day) as bait to try and charm Tom out of army life. But plans backfire when Jan falls under the spell of the handsome soldier.Read more

The soap-opera career of Motown's most successful group, theTemptations, lends credence to the old belief that great art comes from troubled lives. Over three decades, the band struggled through numerous ego trips, countless members, broken relationships, coke addiction, alcoholism, suicide, cancer, deadly arthritis--in short, all the melodramatic devices necessary for a TV miniseries. This two-and-a-half-hour docudrama touches on all of these personal tragedies, but unfortunately forgets the real reason for the strength of the story: the music. Sure, there's wonderful reenactments of the quintet's finest material, such as "My Girl," "Just My Imagination," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "The Way You Do the Things You Do," all performed with the slick choreography and shimmering vocal harmonies that made the band legendary. But, unfortunately, director Allan Arkush (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE, BUT.....
I don't like the way THE MIRACLES were portrayed in this film. They are MY favoritegroup of all time.and they were CO- WRITERS with SMOKEY of all those great TEMPTATIONS tunes ( if you don't believe it , look for the names ROBINSON, ROGERS, MOORE AND WHITE on the writing credits of the TEMPTATIONS' 1ST "GREATEST HITS" album..but they're seen and mentioned only in passing in this story ,despite the fact that they were the group that STARTED IT ALL at MOTOWN. They even performed that night at that community center .... in fact , THEY WERE THE HEADLINERS !! But , this wasn't depicted in the film.ONCE AGAIN , the MIRACLES didn't (and still don't } get the respect or credit they deserve. If ANY group deserves a mini - series told about them ,it'sMOTOWN'S FIRST GROUP !! Hopefully ,one day,it will happen, once CLAUDETTE ROBINSON completes HER autobiography.( we're still waiting,CLAUDETTE!! ) Other than that , I very much enjoyed THE TEMPTATIONS story. ( But they should have focused more on PAUL and his POWERFUL PERFORMANCE of " DON'T LOOK BACK " that CLOSED the TEMPTATIONS live shows , instead of only EDDIE and DAVID. ( the song was good enough for PAUL to have sung it on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW, but not good enough for this MINI SERIES ) ?!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!
I can watch this film over and over again. This was well made.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Temptations Movie is Fine Entertainment
I am gratified to see that so many others have watched this movie as many times as I have. The music is infectious, I just don't get tired of it, and the actors seem like they are having so much fun. Each actor is charismatic. They weave a spell over the viewer.Even the crowds of fans are good. It's hard to capture the excitement of live performance on film, and in this movie, you feel what it must be like to be a performer, the good and the bad.I plan to sit down and count all the songs that are woven through the movie, for what you get this movie is worth every penny -- I put on the tape and listen to it several days a week.Sometimes I watch "Shout" David Ruffin's first performance with The Temptations in the film three times in a row.The energy makes me glad to be alive.

One of the finest American musicals, this 1944 film by Vincente Minnelli is an intentionally self-contained story set in 1903, in which a happy St. Louis family is shaken to their roots by the prospect of moving to New York, where the father has a better job pending. Judy Garland heads the cast in what amounts to a splendid, end-of-an-era story that nicely rhymes with the onset of the 20th century. The film is extraordinarily alive, the characters strong, and the musical numbers are so splendidly part of the storytelling that you don't feel the film has stopped for an interlude. Read more

Great Buy.Very happy with my purchase. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Judy Garland's Best Film Ever!
I first saw this movie when I was seven years old and it has been one of my all-time favorites ever since. The cinematography is gorgeous. The technicolor brings out the lush set designs and costumes. This is one those movies that you should watch if you're feeling sick or depressed. It never fails to make me feel better! The catchy tunes are beautifully sung by the talented Judy Garland. Among them are "The Boy Next Door" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". The uncomplicated problems of the Smith family are a great escape from the complex lives that modern people lead.

5-0 out of 5 stars MEET ME IN ST.LOUIS!!!! A Charming Look Back At The Good Old Days
This has quickly become one of my favorite musicals. With breathtaking sets and Minnelli's beautiful eye for detail this movie has a powerful impact and is simply breathtaking. Often forgotten and overlooked by Broadway this movie is powerful with it's music and it's all-star cast. Judy Garland gives a performance that rivals her "Wizard Of Oz" one and in my opinon deserved an Oscar for her job as Esther.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Rodgers' favorite is sublime musical theater.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's groundbreaking musical version of Molnar's "Liliom" has been given a fine rendering on film. Gordon Macrae is the carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, who falls in love with the lovely millworker, Julie Jordan, portrayed by the talented Shirley Jones. The road to happiness is paved with wife abuse, criminal acts, and tragedy, not the usual items found in musicals.
5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait
This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of CAROUSEL is definitely a must for all fans of the uplifting and inspiring Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.Considered by Rodgers as the personal favourite of all his works, and based on the play "Liliom" by Ferenc Molnar; the story concerns innocent factory-girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones) and jaded carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae).Despite coming from the opposite sides of the track, the two fall in love, but their relationship is tempered by Billy's violent outbursts and inability to find an honest job. When Julie becomes pregnant, he is talked into committing a robbery, but the plan backfires when he falls on his own knife and dies while trying to escape the police. Now in Heaven, Billy is given one last chance to redeem himself and to reconcile his now-teenaged daughter.Filled with haunting songs like "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone", CAROUSEL remains a very moving film experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
this is one of the best Broadway musicals on film. The entire cast and crew delivers and it`s no wonder why 20th Century-Fox took over MGM`s undisputed reign as a musical master. No one could do musicals like MGM, but by mid-50s the studio set musicals were coming of age and other studios jumped to the occasion with musicals such as The Sound of Music, this film, Hello Dolly, South Pacific and Song Of Norway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair story, great jazz score

5-0 out of 5 stars 50's Icon
I've loved this movie since it's release. Peggy Lee is the greatest lady pop/jazz singer of the mid 20th Century, and she gets into the 1920's mode as if it were a svelte gown. Her renditions are immaculate, as we always expect them to be, but less expected is her portrayal of the exploited artist in the speakeasies. She chews up the scenery, and stands tastefully right in between Jack Webb's unemotiveness and Edmund O'Brien's ham. An interesting contrast movie of about the same year which allows O'Brien to roast his ham with color is "The Girl Can't Help It", a rock and roll movie starring Jane Mansfield, and featuring the entertainers of the hour, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, et alia. The cast of "Pete Kelly's Blues" also includes young Lee Marvin and Martin Milner as sidemen in Pete Kelly's band. The best song in the flick is the cameo by Ella Fitzgerald, of whom we would wish to see and hear more, if only her part was bigger in the script. A nice evocation and snapshot, if symbolic, of the world of Bix and Bing, Ruth Etting and Moe the Gimp.

4-0 out of 5 stars All that love of jazz
Jack Webb loved jazz and the jazz age. That comes through loud and clear in Pete Kelly's Blues. I liked this movie immensely because it's a labor of love. Despite it's flaws (Jack Webb tends to be stiff at times) the movie works and works well. Meticulous attention to detail, Peggy Lee in a dramatic role as well as her glorious singing, Andy Devine as a cop along with the great Ella Fitzgerald and some of the best jazz music ever recorded plus a strong supporting cast, make this movie well worth savoring again and again.

Editorial Review

Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swiveling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice," "Baby, I Don't Care," "Don't Leave Me Now," and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. Read more

This is Presley's third and best film which was released in 1957 just as he was reaching his peak. It is in ultra-cool black & white which just seems to add to its value. It has great dramatic appeal and is best remembered for its great songs, and for scenes that typify the Presley personality. One song is the incredible Jailhouse Rock musical sequence, with all of the blistering excitement and energetic dancing by the man who did it best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rustler's Rhapsody
I love the premise--that of the old-time good guys meet the spaghetti-western bad guys.
5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
A wonderful send-up to old cowboy movies! Great cast! My grandson (6) LOVED this movie and doesn't seem to catch the double entendres (which are SO good!! Highly recommend - 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ganbgs of Fun!
When I first saw this movie, it was on a whim. I didn't know what to expect, but I saw the cast and figured that I couldn't lose. I went into the theatre, sat down and was immediately taken back to the fifties when I would religeously watch the westerns that littered the airways way back before the advent of Cable TV. Rustlers Rhapsody is just lots of fun, especially if you remember the likes of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and The Lone Ranger. The fancy clothes, the silver saddle, the polished two-gun rig and of course, the Wonder Horse. Rustlers Rhapsody is a tip of the hat to all that, and more. When I say more, they even make fun of Modern day westerns like the Italian gems we had seen in the 70's. Interjected with modern day humor and moral values, I had to laugh at all the gags and situations presented. (I am especially fond of the scene where the short cowpoke walked up to the town drunk and asked for a light.) If you want a good old fashioned fun time, I heartily recommend Rustlers Rhapsody. If you were born between 1945 and 1955, this one will touch a nerve and keep you giggling for a good while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but good just the same
I'm torn between giving this five stars or four stars.I'm settling on five because it's Gene Kelly and because I just love him.I also think five stars is fair because this film is fifty years old. Some of the stuff that he does as director might seem fairly pedestrian to us but we have to remember that when he was doing it it was pretty much brand new. What an innovator! The film itself consists of three thirty minute minifilms; the stories are all told through dance, music, and mime with no spoken words. The first one was the least enjoyable of the three, IMO.It's mostly ballet and while Gene does do some dancing, you don't get to enjoy him the way you do in other films. For one thing, he's almost unrecognizable under all that white face paint; I typically don't care for costumes and masks and such.I'm also not a big fan of mime and this segment relies on it more than any of the others.5-0 out of 5 stars A great film!
I highly recommend this musical. The costumes are beautiful and the dancing is wonderful!I'd give it ten stars if I could. Gene Kelly is wonderful in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and unusual
Kelly doesn't dance here as much as you might expect, but it was written, directed and choreographed by him, and is quite imaginative. He was a gifted choreographer as well as dancer. This also gave him a chance tocreate sexier dance numbers than you will find in the average musical. Andthere's a funny take off on Sinatra. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as I remember...........
I was so excited to see that Finian's Rainbow was finally formatted to DVD. The acting, singing, and dancing is just as fabulous as I remember it from my childhood. I would wager to say that Finian's Rainbow was my "first" musical. I couldn't be prouder of this masterpiece.
5-0 out of 5 stars NICE RESTORATION FOR ASTAIRE'S LAST MUSICAL FILM
I've been waiting to see a decent print of FINIAN'S RAINBOW for sometime.Though not an all-time favorite, I do like the score, and I'm a huge Petula Clark fan.Other video versions I've seen were poor pan-scan versions with horrible color and bad sound.Warners has done the film justice.Widescreen, 5.1 Surround and a trip down memory lane with Francis Ford Coppola, the director.
4-0 out of 5 stars odd, in a good way
it takes a special kind of person to watch the entire movie without developing a migraine, but if you go the distance, you'll love it.it's quirky, silly, goofy, insert synonym, and it sticks with you.I first saw it when i was 10, and it's one of my favorite movies.i often find myself singing the songs, especially "Look to the Rainbow" and "When I'm not Near the Girl I Love." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars loved leslie caron's clothing!
I just loved Leslie Caron's clothing in this movie - it's worth watching just to look at the wonderful clothing style of that era.

2-0 out of 5 stars FOX HITS SOME RATHER WEAK NOTES
In the Golden Age of Hollywood, each studio usually took a stab all various genres, but excelled in only one. Warner Brothers cornered gangster films, with forays into musicals (Busby Berkeley) and noir (Bogart). Universal dabbled in lots of B-films, but succeeded big-time with horror. MGM, of course, produced the best musicals. Fox did melodramas --- especially noir --- with an occasional romp on MGM's musical turf. And usually those romps hit some really bad notes. Witness the first three flicks in their Marquee Musicals series. Daddy Long Legs has Astaire and Caron, Pin-Up Girl has Betty Grable, Week-End in Havana has Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda,The memory of these films, for the most part, is a lot better than the films themselves. The pleasant but fairly pedestrian scores, thin plots and busy character actors scurrying around propping up the story make for rough going. And make one yearn for Mickey and Judy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Astaire, As Usual, Is Always Worth Watch
