5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY...
This is an absolutely charming fantasy film. I love it! Of course, since I was a child, I have always been partial to Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald films. Together, they made beautiful music. This film is particularly bittersweet, as it was their final film together, forever ending a wonderful musical chapter in Hollywood history.3-0 out of 5 stars So awful it's good
I MARRIED AN ANGEL shows up on a lot of lists of the worst movies ever made, and the first thing that has to be acknowledged is that it truly is dreadful. As my daughter and I watched this, she kept screaming over and over, "This is so stupid!"And it is.I couldn't tell her that she was wrong. But . . . if you can get past the fact that the plot is absurd and the premise ridiculous, it can provide a lot of fun.The songs are good, even if the context is sometimes dreadful, the singing spirited, and the acting as good as could be expected under the circumstances. And there is a certain bravery everyone displays in carrying the spirit of the thing all the way to the end.5-0 out of 5 stars I Married An Angel - MacDonald and Eddy's Last Hurrah
This movie is a cult classic for musical lovers. This was the last movie that Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy made together and you can see that the actors have matured and are comfortable with one another. The actors' facial expressions, body language and overall acting all combine to completely charm the watcher of this movie.Watch closely as Nelson and Jeanette look at each other at the birthday party -- it's enough to give you that little tingle that goes all the way down to your tummy! What a beautiful couple! What gorgeous costuming! What wonderful songs! There are no others that have voices that blend so beautifully as Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy and there has not been a couple like these two since.Every song in this movie leaves a lasting impression and you find you will hum these songs after the movie ends. The story line is enchanting.I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it as a child and I love it still today.I highly recommend this movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Off Yet?
If you are delighted by the dazzling, relentless visual creativity of directors like Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, and David Cronenberg - then sit back and surrender to the magic of Tommy - director Ken Russell's finest hour.Ann-Margret's showcase performance leads the way for an all-star review including Arthur Brown (Fire!), Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, and various incarnations of The Who, easily among the best rock bands of all time.(Elton John also appears, outperformed by his glasses.)
5-0 out of 5 stars WHO Fans are WAY Too Hard on this Fim!
If You look over the people who gave this Film a bad review, it's most likely from a "WHO" Fan and they're basing their review on what THEY wanted the Film to be or Think it should have been... they're comparing it to the Original Concept album from 1969, which I believe is Totally Unfair. It You were like Me, and saw this Movie without the prejudice of being a WHO Fan, than You would Judge the Film on it's Own Merits.I Think this is one of the Best Films I've ever Seen.I've watched it More times than I care to admit, because I see something different in it every signal time. That's just one of the things that makes this such a Great Film... it keeps You Thinking. If You're a WHO Fan, than go back and Listen to the 69 Version.. You KNOW that it was Purposely Left Open for Interpretation.... So give Ken Russell a Break.

2-0 out of 5 stars ken russell is the antichrist!
The main problem of this film is that it fell into the hands of Ken Russell, England's bad boy of cinema. He had a chance to make The Who's amazing rock opera into a visual treat--and totally let his penchant for garish imagry and bad taste ruin it!Perhaps if the project fell into the hands of a better director (Alan Parker, Stanley Kubrick, Norman Jewison, anyone!) then this would be a better film.Read more

Editorial Review

Diana Ross stars as legendary blues singer Billie Holiday in this biopic that chronicles her rise and fall. It begins with her late childhood, a stint as a prostitute, those early days as a blues singer, her marriages, and her drug addiction. Overly glossy and lacking depth, this is worth seeing only for the performances. Diana Ross was nominated for an Oscar for her acting debut. A dynamo with sparkling screen presence, she realistically conveys the confusion and unhappiness that caused Holiday so much grief. Her performance is almost matched by romantic interest Billy Dee Williams. Watch for Richard Pryor, who is most powerful in a dramatic supporting role as the piano player in a brothel. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars RIVETING SUPREME CLASSIC~BRAVO DIANA!!!
By the early 70's jazz legend Billie Holiday had been gone for over a decade and her harrowing life was truly an incredible story that was bound to hit the big screen...my first choice to play Lady Day was another magnificent Jazz/Soul/Pop legend Nancy Wilson who had just turned in a passionate and impressive "guest star" performance of a singer all strung out on one of the popular television dramatic series...looked like she was a shoo-in for that plum role but it was Diana who had Berry Gordy and at that moment that was the ticket!Being a huge fan of Motown music I was less than thrilled though when I heard that Diana Ross was going to portray the troubled and brilliant jazz legend but out of curiosity ran to see "Lady Sings The Blues" the week of its release and was totally impressed with the drama and pathos created by the great performances contained in this ground-breaking motion picture that also made a romantic leading man out of Billy Dee Williams plus Richard Pryor gives a winning performance as well.Diana Ross is simply tremendous and amazing to watch in this moody atmospheric motion picture classic that still holds up today as an engrossing drama of a singer who had brilliant and uniquely original talent but made all the wrong choices in life...Bravo to everyone involved with this earthy and deeply moving and yes somewhat troubling and disturbing classic!!! Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli both gave magnificent career defining performances the same year and these grand and legendary performers should have gone on to greater heights in motion pictures but a burned-out Hollywood no longer knew how to put together great projects for great female talent and this sadly still holds true today!Since the 70's a legendary screen career such as a Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, etc. would not or could not have happened and this is a sad loss to the audience and those many artists whose career's have floundered with their wonderful talent left untapped...Hollywood in many ways has really lost the way and movies today look and feel completely fake and manufactured..."Lady Sings The Blues" is from another era where talent for the most part reined supreme and this era is sadly gone and would take nothing short of a miracle for it to return.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lady Sings the Blues
Lady Sings the Blues is a must for people who like the oldies to include movies that tells a story and leaves a lesson for the viewers.A must for old movie collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Musicals!
When I first watched Into the woods I was about 2-4 yrs old, around that age and could never get the name right. I used to call it "Granny In The Woods" and had a vhs t.v. recording that finally bit the dust not to long ago because of age and the dirt lodged in the tape. The music and the acting captivated me and made me want to watch more even though I didn't get some of the adult humor that was in the show that made it more pleasent for everyone in my family to watch with me. It was one thing I could watch that I won't outgrow. The original broadway cast far outshines the 2002 broadway revival cast and the british cast, to me anyway. Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason shine in this excellent musical. Most of the other cast members I've haven't seen in any other things and probably wouldn't have heard of them if not for this play. This is definitely a quality dvd recording. Even though the dvd has no special features it makes up for that with it's crisp sound and picture. It's clarity is magnificent, the cameras are placed just right to where you're not focused on a character that isn't speaking instead of the one that is the main character of the scene. It's done on stage instead of a movie set which just makes the experience more lifelike and makes you feel like you're in the theatre watching the play in the best seat possible. This is one musical that the whole family can enjoy and is also one of the best musicals of the 80s up there with Phantom, Joseph, Cats, Superstar and many more of the 70s and 80s! If youwant a wholesome, enjoyable thing to watch, then this is the dvd for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Into the woods, a great musical! I GREAT DVD!
this is absolutely my favorite musical! my school is putting this show on, and i cant wait. but the dvd is just so great! its perfect for anyone that likes broadway, sondheim and the experience of broadway. the only thing is that this show is really long, but even thats fine! the show is a perfect blend of comedy and tragedy all in one! YOU MUST GET IT!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice presentation
After performing in the pit for a production of this in my hometown, I wanted to see the original Broadway cast doing this musical. The set is fantastic! What a joy to watch! For the sharp humor side of this show, I'd strongly suggest this DVD recording, but for a more musical expeirience I would buy the soundtrack of the original BW cast. The DVD has a few lagging tempos, which is very annoying after listerning to the snappy soundtrack. Also there are 2 notes that don't quite make it up there on the DVD.Overall, I would highly recomend this DVD recording; I just love Little Red Riding Hood's humor. The CD is worth a listen too."And home before dark!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless, operates at two levels
This movie is so well-known and so much-reviewed (see the other released versions), that I will say little in the standard way of a review: "The Wizard of Oz" is a colorful, musical, enchanting fairy tale that was done as well as any movie ever was.It overflows with color and whimsy, the bad guys are abhorrent (as they should be), and you want the good guys (and girls) to move into your neighborhood.Everyday pieces of reality are enhanced and patched together into a fantasy land that looks part abstract and part American primitive art. This is one of the few movies that can be watched yearly (or more often) without viewers getting tired of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming fun, if a tad too long
Every now and then it's fun to pick up a video you know nothing about--to not even read the back of it--and just experience it without any preconceptions or media hype.
3-0 out of 5 stars An Overstuffed Pastiche of Hollywood Musicals Has Charms But Wears Thin
Three years after his gracefully audacious film, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", filmmaker Jacques Demy made a follow-up of even broader scope, a pastel-colored Gallic pastiche of Hollywood musicals. While the format of "Cherbourg" is a series of bold recitatives that build on the emotionalism of the simple love story at the movie's core, "Rochefort" is a more standard musical within an elaborate tableau of activity set in the seaside town of Rochefort. The featherweight plot centers on beautiful twin sisters, both with a passion for music and romance, and what happens to them when a variety troupe sweeps into town one weekend.
4-0 out of 5 stars Young, Warm & Wonderful
Rarely have I seen a movie that's main purpose is simply to delight us. Jacques Demy's "The Young Girls of Rochefort" is such a movie. It merely wants to put a smile on our face and light up our hearts, and it succeeds in spades.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Look, it's okay to admire my wife, but would you mind taking your elbow out of my butter?"
Here's the plot: Before they were partners, Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) was one half of the popular dance act Kalmar & Brown, and Harry Ruby (Red Skelton) was a struggling piano player/songplugger. The first time Kalmar and Ruby met, it doesn't turn out well. Kalmar, you see, is obsessed with magic and moonlights as a stage magician. When Ruby is assigned as his assistant, he botches Kalmar's magic act disastrously and earns Kalmar's wrath. However, when Kalmar suffers a back stage knee accident and has to break up his dance team, he bumps into Ruby again. This time, they manage to collaborate on a song before things go south, and that, in essence, was the birth of their successful tin pan alley songwriting partnership.
5-0 out of 5 stars Movie facinated composer Randy Newman as a kid...
In the catalog for "Guilty: 30 Years of Randy Newman", Lenny Waronker wrote, "When we were kids, we saw a movie called Three Little Words... We were facinated by the idea of writing songs--turning musical inspiration into a precise verse/chorus/bridge form."

4-0 out of 5 stars A congenial musical with Fred Astaire as Bert Kalmar and Red Skelton as Harry Ruby
Three Little Words is like a mother's cooking. It may not be haute cuisine, but it's tasty and it's nice sitting around the table with friends and family. The movie, in my opinion, has no great highs and no great lows; it's a genial, comfortable musical with a strong performance by Fred Astaire as Bert Kalmar and a low-key one from Red Skelton as Harry Ruby.

When a psychiatrist (Yves Montand) begins talking to a young woman (Barbra Streisand), he realizes that she can recall a past life while under hypnosis. Although this brash New Yorker is thoroughly modern and somewhat abrasive, he becomes fascinated by the 19th-century English woman who speaks through her. This oddball musical flicks back and forth between period flashbacks and modern times, which may be one reason it never builds up much power in either realm. Read more

Barbra is always a treat to watch and Yves, as the leading man, is outstanding. The story is trite froth and the acting rather robust, but suspend disbelief and enjoy this fun movie

4-0 out of 5 stars A ONE IN A MILLION MOVIE MUSICAL...ALMOST!
Much has been written about this expensive ill promoted film version of the 1965 Broadway musical. The truth is ...it is really a one of a kind musical film that got lost in the late sixties shuffle of the changing taste in American films. The fact that (with few exceptions) no one seems to know how to make musical films anymore only makes this lovely film all the more endearing. In fact...this film has aged incredibly well. The regression scenes that were highly praised at the time of it's release...are still as stunning as ever. What I found interesting (it had been years since I had seen it) were the present day sequences (late sixties) that now play as period. The whole movie now works as a period piece. Scenes that seemed out of date at the time of its initial release (sets, hats, clothes) now only add to the charm of the movie as a whole.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of the Court Jester
The Court Jester is a really great timeless comedy, from the day when comedy involved word games and soem slap stick; as opposed to the more vulgar bathroom and bedroom humor that is typical in today's comedys. Its got it all; laughs, great music, swashbuckling action...and best of all a happy ending. I recommend this movie to all who want to see a good "feel good" film that the entire family can watch. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's Lovely!
This is a delightful MGM musical that has not gotten the credit that it deserves. The amazing duo of Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel are wonderful...as usual. Marge and Gower Champion and Ann Miller add beautiful dancing, and Red Skelton adds humor. The songs are great. Kathryn Grayson performs "Yesterdays" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Howard Keel sings "The Most Exciting Night" and "Lovely to Look At." Grayson and Keel sing "Your Devestating" and "The Touch of Your Hand". Ann Miller dances to and sings "I'll Be Hard to Handle", and Marge and Gower Champion sing "I Won't Dance". Finally, Gower Champion, Howard Keel, and Red Skelton sing my personal favorite song, "Lafayette". I also love the fashion show at the end with gowns designed by Adiran! If you like musicals, you should see this movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and colorful musical!
I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did.Katheryn Grayson and Howard Keel, sing there way into love, and also this films has the lovely dancing couple Marge and Gower Champion along with the ever funny Red Skelton, and beautiful and talented dancer Ann Miller. The costumes and dance numbers are a feast for the eyes. It's really a well done remake of the 1930's "Roberta," musical staring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. In fact I enjoyed it much better.I think it deserves 5 stars and stands on it's on, as a beautiful musical film of the 1950'sThe vocals done my Keel and Grayson are really quite beautiful to hear. It's well worth viewing for any fan of musicals. It has a little of everything, drama, romance, comedy, song, dance, and a good plot as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Certain moments are quite stunning.
I've always thought this film got a short shrift because it dared to be a remake of an Astaire-Rogers film. But, to be fair, it's a perfectly capable "Roberta" remake, in lush color for the first time, and there are a few notable differences in plot. The heir to the salon is a songwriter instead of a football star (which better suits the talents of Red Skelton anyway), the singing designer (Grayson) has a vocal counterpart (Keel), and the dancers-- former sweethearts in the first film-- meet for the first time here. I always thought it was strange that Astaire and Rogers' dances were presented as isolated stage duets rather than integrated into the plot of the story. In the case of Marge & Gower Champion, their dances advance their love story-- first with "I Won't Dance," cleverly staged with dresser mannequins, then with the film's masterpiece, the dreamy "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," presented in an emptying cafe which magically becomes a starlit dance floor, bathed in midnight blue. It's one of the most romantic dances ever presented on film. Also nice are the Keel/Grayson challenge duet of "You're Devastating" and Skelton's piano cut-up of "Go Tell Aunt Brodie."The only disappointment is the gaudy fashion show-- but it was just as bad in the first version of the story!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Could well be the best DVD on the market
Given that the movie is wonderful, perhaps the last of the great Hollywood musicals and a charmer for all generations, this DVD is still remarkably wonderful. Disney has done a clean-up job on the film that makes it shine. The audio is rich and wonderful, including the all-important ORIGINAL stereo soundtrack (feh to multi-channel remixes!). The special features even manage to elucidate the process of filmmaking in manner intriguing to both the cineaste parent and Mary-mad children.
5-0 out of 5 stars thank you, Julie and Dick (and Walt, of course)!
I think I like this movie more now than when I was a kid! And the extra features on this 2-DVD set are absolutely wonderful. Great interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, one of the Sherman brothers (songwriter), and the girl who played Jane that really show how special the movie-making process was, which then translated to joy on the screen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful story and lovely music
Mary Poppins must be one of the loveliest filming produced by Disney studios. This musical movie is extremely well produced and has outstanding actor work. The scenes are of high quality despite the whole story was filmed indoors. Even the little part of London was reproduced in Disney studio. The music from Sherman brothers is world famous and well known. When you hear the first tunes, you might say: Hey I've heard that somewhere! Having this DVD on your shelf would please both you and your younger fellows. ... Read more

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace for John Waters
I first heard of Hairspray a few years ago when Harvey Fierstein was winning acclaim playing the transvestite role on Broadway. I heard of it once again, when I read that John Travolta would be playing that same role in a theatrical version of the film. Around this same time I saw a movie called "Pink Flamingos" which led me to discovering John Waters, which led me to finding this film. "Hairspray" is not Waters' best (in my opinion), but it's definitely a special and funny film that is a far cry from other efforts by Waters. First off, it's his first and only film to have a rating under 'R' (In fact, it's rated PG) and while it still contains a few vulgarities; It's actually a pretty tame movie. The film takes place in the 60's, where hair (and hairspray) was the rage. Equally popular is The Corny Collins Show, a TV dance party that all the kids just eat up. One in particular though, dreams of being on the show and becoming famous. This is Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake, 'Serial Mom')...
1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy movie
I saw the stage production and thought that since it was good the movie would be good also. I was very wrong. The movie is awful

3-0 out of 5 stars What Great Fun
What great fun I had watching this movie. I really enjoyed the music, and the characters in the movie were just like the kids were back then.I was taken back to the days of American Bandstand and other dance shows of that era. Really fun to watch and fun to remember........ ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Music
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb--I do not use the word lightly--extended three song set by singer/pianist Hazel Scott (who later married the controversial minister/politician Adam Clayton Powell Jr.) about halfway through the film. It has absolutely nothing to do with the plot but is magnificent nonetheless. Robert Alda deserves to be remembered perhaps not for his work in this film but for his origination of the role of gambler Sky Masterson in the great musical Guys and Dolls.

3-0 out of 5 stars First the bad news
This is one of those films that seems WAY longer than it actually is, and it's not exactly short to begin with. Second, I can think of better leads than Alda. But he was actually better than I'd thought he'd be. What makes this film a little gem is seeing people like Hazel Scott act and perform, as well as all the great music and historical perspective the film offers. Hopefully, we'll be seeing it on DVD soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not historically accurate, but still good fun.
Robert Alda stars in this odd, melodramatic potboiler which looks at the rags-to-rich (and more riches) rise of one of America's greatest popular composers. The film is hampered by a few small points, one being that Gershwin's life doesn't readily lend itself to dramatic portrayal (until the very end, when he drops dead at a very young age, and your jaw just drops)... The problem is that guy was just too darn successful! He hit a groove and never stopped, moving from one huge critical success to another (with one or two flops in between)... The scriptwriters were obviously aware of this, and insert several belabored sequences wherein Gershwin anguishes over this or that, and a couple of sniffly, symbolic deathbed scenes, just for good measure.Other problems include Alda himself (yes, he's Alan's dad...) who isn't completely up to the role, as well as the weak portrayal of George's brother Ira, a super-brilliant, super-important lyricist, who is here presented as a mere hanger-on and cheerleader for his brother, the big-shot genius.Hello?Excuse me... Ira Gershwin?!?Of the Gershwin brothers?Oh, forget it.Oh, also check out Gershwin's kooky pal Oscar Levant, who plays himself, in a somewhat true-to-life portrayal as George's confidant and stand-in concertizer.Other celebrities who play themselves here include Al Jolson and bandleader Paul Whiteman... and the music, of course, can't be beat. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A flashy, mostly bad experience...
A lot of people seem to describe this as one of those movies that are "so bad, it's good."I cannot agree.
