5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the movie; 4 stars for the DVD extras
This is my all time favorite movie. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. The DVD features on this Ultimate Edition are quite good, but not superb. I truly enjoyed the interviews (including Jennifer Grey, Kenny Ortega - the choreographer, and many more). Did you know that Patrick Swayze brought his dog Derek to the set and he was normally perfectly behaved... until Patrick had to shoot a love scene. Then his beloved pooch would sit off the set and cry and howl (cute, huh?). There are several anecdotes like this within the interviews. I also enjoyed the music videos included on the bonus disc. Let's face it, the music of Dirty Dancing is part of its greatness! There are two separate audio commentaries, but I was disappointed that neither Jennifer Grey or Patrick Swayze, nor any other of the film's cast participated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody puts baby in the corner to carry a watermelon
I have one hand on the bible, one hand in the air, and I confess that I indeed used to be obsessed with this movie, as most women my age were. I had the soundtrack, I knew every line, I knew the choreography every dance step and swivel and thrust. Jennifer Grey was me, big nose, bad perm and small chest. Patrick Swayze, well he didn't exist in my world, so I had to watch his again and again. We all knew the "I carried a watermelon" and "nobody puts baby in the corner" but did we really know why we even felt so passionate about it in the first place? The story being set in the late 50's, the setting at a family vacation spot, the outsider looking in, dancing, forbidden love, mystery, it all entered our psyches as THE perfect movie and never lost its footing. Could Patrick Swayzes white t-shirt be any tighter, could Jennifer Grays smirk be any cuter, could Jerry Orbach be a more perfect protective father?NO! After this came out, I saw advertisements for learning how to "dirty dance" and asked my parents, with me being in ballet and jazz, what was one more class? Well it turns out 14 year olds shouldn't be gyrating against each other, who knew? I still learned them, by watching the tape over and over, but my partner was a girl named April and I think we giggled too much. Now that I think about it, if anyone had caught us I would have been straight to therapy. I haven't watched it in years, my husband refuses to even acknowledge its existence "chick movie" he mumbles, is it really just a girl phenomena? Well, no matter, It's a perfect specimen of Fun, laughs, thrills, tears and friction!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Movie That Forever Changed My View Of Patrick Swayze
Prior to Dirty Dancing, I've only seen Patrick in Red Dawn and Uncommon Valor where I found his acting marginal at best and his look somewhat common.I had no intention of seeing this movie when, as a teen, my mom dragged me kicking and screaming to the movie theatre. After Johnny and Penny danced their mambo together I was hooked and have loved him ever since. He was simply to die for! There is just something so sensually mouthwatering about a man trained in dance and who would have though Patrick Swayze could dance or act?Yes he does do a decent job acting in this movie.Turns out he's been doing the wrong type of films. Its too bad he hasn't done more dancing/romantic lead acting, as it seems to fit his brooding demeanor and look very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Cinematic Musical
I haven't seen a cinematic musical so finely crafted and enjoyable since Singing in the Rain--Chicago is outstanding! Set in its namesake during a female murder spree, the costumes, sets, and atmosphere are right on target. The acting, singing, and dancing are so good chills will run down your spine. Renee Zellewegger is particularly inspired as Roxie, reminding me keenly of Marilyn Monroe. Queen Latifah and the remainder of the cast are equally up to the challenge, bringing Bob Fosse's musical to the screen in all its dark, glamorous glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest
In our house, this is one of the all-time favourite movies. *Everyone* is perfectly cast, the style constantly changes (on-stage, off-stage, fantasy projections of how numbers could be staged...) and it manages to be convincing as a small-time theatre production while at the same time being colourful and imaginative. Covent Garden could learn a thing or two about staging from this movie. This is Ken Russell's greatest movie. We want a DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars TAGLINE SAYS IT ALL
"A Glittering Super Colossal Heart Warming Toe-Tapping Continuously Delightful Musical Extravaganza"

4-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy, silly, ridiculous, and I love it!
I have one copy of this tape and I guess I'd better get a backup -- doesn't look like it's coming out on DVD anytime soon and I'm gonna wear the poor thing out! It is a perfect portrayal of a bunch of wannabes who definitely will never-be... OK, except Tommy Tune who's probably just too good to perform as barely adequate. Christopher Gable likewise performs like a pro. (Is that perhaps a failing in this particular flick, which is all about a bunch of folks who aren't really that great?) Twiggy is perfectly cast. She's delightfully amateur as a singer; she's so likable, such an underdog, so frightened, how can she not be a sympathetic character? Even the awkward edits, which would be unforgivable in a more serious film, are perfect amateur glitches here (watch the jumpy splices in the "Perfect Young Ladies" number--really horrible, but just exactly the right thing to leave in on this movie). My favorite over-the-top silly bit is Polly's extended Grecian nymph fantasy. Tommy Tune leading the chorus of nymphs off to save the day is hysterical. And the whole thing takes place in the space of time it takes for Polly to make quick eye contact with Tony offstage... and ends when he winks back at her. Two seconds of real time. What girl hasn't had an extended fantasy compressed into a few seconds? It's all so cheerfully, delightfully cheesy. Not a guy's film. It's a chick flick. Perfect for the end of a really yucky day: curl up with your Teddy bear and something chocolate, plug this movie in, and enjoy the ride. It asks nothing of you, just happily delivers a series of giggles and a Yay! at the end. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The second half of this 1943 Technicolor musical is an excuse for MGM's contract talent to perform songs and sketches in a big show at an Army base. Unfortunately, more than an hour passes before the show arrives, stranding the viewer with a thin service comedy about an opera singer (Kathryn Grayson) tagging along to a military camp in hopes of reuniting her estranged parents, whose names are Bill and Hillary (no comments, please). Romance comes in the form of private Gene Kelly, a former trapeze artist who misses the glory of his former life. Grayson warbles, and Kelly has one nifty solo dance (with a mop and broom), but the all-star revue is the movie's main attraction. The song selection is generally poor ("I Dug a Ditch in Wichita" is performed twice), with Lena Horne's sultry take on "Honeysuckle Rose" an exception. She's backed by Benny Carter and His Orchestra. Specialty player Virginia O'Brien delights with one of her deadpan numbers, Eleanor Powell tap dances, and Judy Garland delivers with a boogie-woogie lilt on "Jumpin' Down at Carnegie Hall." Comedy sketches with Red Skelton and Frank Morgan are stubbornly unfunny. Then there'sJosé Iturbi, the Spanish-born conductor, making his film debut at thebeginning of his run as MGM's supposedly cute highbrow. Director George Sidneywould team up two years later with Iturbi, Kelly, and Grayson in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite Kathryn Grayson movies
I love this movie. Most people only watch it because of all the MGM stars in it.i personally think this is the most boring part of the picture.I enjoy the romance between Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson much more than the songs, dances, and comedy scetches of the stars. The only thing I think is wrong with this movie is that Kathyrn Gryason only sings three songs which is hardly displaying her talent (although the songs are pretty good), and Gene Kelly only dances once.I'dlike to say to anybody thinking of seeing this movie: go for it.It's wonderful!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thousands cheer--when it's finally over!
With a cast like this, I thought how they go wrong? Well, they managed! This movie goes on forever, with a plot that's predictable from the first few minutes, yet keeps dragging on and on. The only relief is Gene Kelly's dance routine with a mop, but otherwise there's little that's even musical about it. Be prepared to fast forward to the real entertainment, which is about an hour and half into the movie. During a "show for the soldiers," the film makers bring on a huge cast of stars who all have brief songs or scenes. Lena Horne is beautiful as always singing "Honeysuckle Rose," Red Skelton does a pretty funny skit, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Lucille Ball, Gloria de Haven, and June Allyson are all right, and Virginia O'Brian is wonderful. Unfortunately, except for these few numbers near the end, it's not worth watching, even for major Gene Kelly fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of MGM stars
MGM redefines the big-screen musical extravaganza in this 1943 roll-out of MGM stars... Gene Kelly and Katheryn Grayson, Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Red Skelton and Margaret O'Brien, plus Lucille Ball, Donna Reed, Ann Southern, Lena Horne, Frank (Oz) Morgan, Mary Astor, June Allyson, and John Boles and Ish Kabibble with Kay Kyser's big band. 5-0 out of 5 stars Angela Bassett / Halle Berry
Halle Berry is very attractive and I am sure that the roll she played in "Monster's Ball" was difficult but Angela Bassett deserved the monumental distinction of being the first African American Actress to win a leading role Oscar.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo
Wow! When they cast Angela Basset to play Tina Turner, they made an amazing choice. She has Tina's facial expressions down pat and an amazing figure too!I never knew that Ike Turner was such a monster.Laurence Fishburne was amazing in his role, he was very scary, and it just made you hate Ike for being so evil. This movie shows what kind of person Tina is: strong. As a little Anna Mae Bullock, she was abandoned by her parents. She stood by her husband Ike, despite the fact that he did drugs, slept with other women and beat her. But enough is enough. Tina couldn't stand it any longer. She left Ike and finally got a divorce. Tina started to rebuild her career as a solo artist but it wasn't an easy job. After years of working and touring, finally in 1983 Tina hit the charts with the cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". Tina made the greatest comeback ever. This is a perfect movie. 3-0 out of 5 stars Thanks VH1 for reminding me how good this movie is
This movie was on VH1 "Movies that Rock" which made me think about it for the first time in like 10 years. The good thing about Selena is that it's a musical biopic that is actually about the music. At least 50% of the movie features musical performances, concerts, and recordings instead of spendning most of its time focused on Selena's murder and death. The film highlights her career as an artist, which I think is an important thing to keep at the forefront. Furthermore, whether you like J.Lo or not, I think it's important to recognize that she did a great job portraying this rising Tejano singer. She wasn't even J.Lo yet when the movie was filmed, and I still only knew her as a fly girl from In Living Color.

This is just a great movie if you like old time movies.I really enjoyed it. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars California Gold Rush
This was a great motion picture when it was filmed, and it remains a great motion picture.Lee Marvin plays the prospector Ben Rumson, a somewhat crude individual, who strikes gold while digging a grave for a man killed in an accident.A mining camp springs up, and Ben acquires a pardner (played by a younger Clint Eastwood, who sings quite well in this role), the brother of the man who was killed. The pardner is known as "Pardner" until a closing scene when Ben says, "By the way, what is your name?"You have to be on your toes to get the significance of that.
3-0 out of 5 stars It Should Have Left Off the "Musical" Part
This film has several things going for it. It is a western. It has some big name stars like Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin. It has plenty of humor. Unfortunately, it loses something along the way by being a musical. Lots of time and energy are devoted to tunes and lyrics that do little or nothing to advance the story. That is my usual criticism of musicals and I understand that there are many who like the songs. In this case, however, there is nothing to like. Except for "They Call the Wind Mariah" there is nothing memorable and that one has less to do with the story than most. Basically, the music is lame.

Editorial Review

Writer-director Woody Allen has produced yet another challenging and funny film, this time taking on the musical genre and bending it to his own unique vision. The result is one of the most charming films in recent years, as Allen assembles a typically sterling ensemble cast to evoke the romanticism of years past. This time, the large cast (including Alan Alda, Drew Barrymore, Goldie Hawn, Edward Norton, and Tim Roth) not only turn in funny and touching performances, but they sing the classic songs of the 1930s and 1940s themselves, and sing them very well. The plot centers on an extended family in New York and their various romantic entanglements, including Allen's pursuit of Julia Roberts through the streets of Paris and the canals of Venice. The musical numbers are the film's high point, displaying wonderful choreography ranging from a room full of dancing Groucho Marxes to a dancing couple in flight at the banks of the Seine. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Woody Allen loses his mind--to the audience's advantage
Watching "Everyone Says I Love You," it is possible to conclude that Woody Allen has gone insane--charmingly and endearingly, but completely, bonkers.A typical Allen-esque New York comedy of love and romance is given a special charge by turning the film into a musical; though Allen has often used classic jazz and show tunes effectively in his other works (especially the Gershwin score of "Manhattan" and the lovely big band tunes in "Hannah and Her Sisters"), this is his first full-out musical with actors bursting into song to (more or less) further the plot. Some, like an endearingly game Edward Norton, shine almost in spite of themselves; some, like Julia Roberts, go down fighting.(Score at the final: Roberts 6, song 2, audience 0.)And some, like Goldie Hawn, positively glow given the chance to show off all of her formidable comedic, singing, and dancing gifts in one package again.Bits of the plot are cribbed from other Allen films (the romances are from "Manhattan," a thread involving a "reformed" criminal echoes "Take the Money and Run"), but the actors--especially Tim Roth as the aforementioned criminal--seem to be having a ball. When Norton and a never-dewier Drew Barrymore are loose in a springtime New York so enchanting that even the store window mannequins have to strike a special pose for them, you get a happy, fizzy glow. And when a set of dancing ghosts causes a conga line at a memorial service, all bets are off; Allen may have officially crossed over from neurotic to delusional, but this adorably addle-pated film is never less than endearing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spare Me
Allen's first all out 100% dud.Alas, not the last. The last ten years have shown a marked decline in Allen's interest in his own craft. The idea is to have a bunch of famous actors sing corny old romantic standards any time something romantic happens. Allen tries and fails to send up the romantic comedy and musicals genres in this irritating one-joke flop. Also, this is one of the few Allen movies where the acting is uniformly subpar. Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore and Edward Norton are just the most glaring of the nonactor filmstars herein. Be wary of Allen's movies where he packs the stars in with a shoehorn.Shows he knows the material is weak and he's overcompensating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and lovely and Easy to Love
Lovers of the great American songbook (GAS)will recognize the title for my review. The same individuals will relish this homage by Mr Allen to the Hollywood musical and no one who has witnessed Mr James Stewart trying to get his tonsils around an Irving Berlin standard will object to any of the actors in EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU who do a commendable job of presenting some wonderful songs from the GAS. Two comments: the film positively drips with charm, and is drippy with the absurdities of those in love much like those in a Shakespearian comedy.A treat, and a GAS. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing original but the script and acting keep it centered...
`Center Stage' is above all else generic. It's very much like every other teen comedy / dance movie but it does have a few things going for it.The script is decent and actually has some pretty good sub-plots that draw you into the characters. The dancing sequences are a nice touch too and are orchestrated in such a way that it is above all else captivating. And, while the majority of the cast are unknowns (which in itself serves as a con) they all seem talented and deliver their lines with confidence and maturity (especially Zoe Saldana and Susan May Pratt, both of which are common in these teen films as the sidekick or best friend to the star). The story of a Jody (Schull) trying to make it as a ballerina but is failing miserably but after becoming the muse of the arrogant ex-student turned professional dancer (Stiefel) she finds hope to be a professional herself. The school is full of other talented dancer with problems of their own. There's the bulimic (Pratt) who is dancing solely for her mother, and there's the gifted yet misunderstood student (Saldana) who's just looking for a fair shot. It's an entertaining film, if not predictable and generic but if you're a fan of the teen dramedy or films like `Save the last Dance' (a film much better than this film) then you should enjoy `Center Stage'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantabulous
When you watch a dance movie you seldom expect the dancing to be great due to the fact that movies contain actors and not dancers but this is one movie that threatened to break that mould. The acting was average but the dancing and choreography were hands down the best that i have ever seen captured on film. This movie showed that a little hard work never hurt nobody and that if you want something you should fight for it tooth and nail because perseverance seldom fails... the dancing would make you get out of you chair and dance because after all that's what it's all about.

This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. Read more

Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it's almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed--no doubt to make money between his smaller, cheaper masterpieces--but one would have thought he would invest something of himself in here. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie Musical
The Amazon review by Tom Keogh is totally ridiculous. "Charmless and dull???" I saw this movie about 8 times when it came out when I was little and was loved it so much. It's full of adventure, great songs, and a story about wanting to belong that children and adults can both relate to. The performances are great. One of Carol Burnett's best. If you haven't seen this movie yet, see it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Musical Classic Well Worth Seeing Seventy Years Later
Sadly not available yet on DVD, the classic black-and-white 1936 version of the seminal 1927 Oscar Hammerstein-Jerome Kern musical is rarely seen these days since it's been overshadowed by the far more elaborate 1951 MGM color remake (which is on DVD). That's a shame since this one is like a piece of cameo jewelry from a bygone era, a sublimely entertaining piece of Americana so naïve in its approach that its pervasive use of racial stereotypes comes across more as quaint than demoralizing.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE COMPLETE SHOW BOAT ON DVD
Someone needs to petition Warner Bros to release a DVD version of MGM's COMPLETE SHOW BOAT Laser Disc set, with the 1929, 1936 and 1951 versions, and the SHOW BOAT segment from TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY. If it ever happens, I hope they will be able to include all the LD audio bonuses from the 1951 recording sessions and still photo galleries of the three films as contained in the Laser Disc set. If George Feltenstein is lurking about reading these posts, it would be really nice to get some of the Criterion content from their release, if they're willing. Could we also please have as much of the 1929 Ziegfeld Prologue as possible? And while I don't usually recommend this type of thing, the alternate stereo mix of the last LD issue of the 1951 film (with the Ava Gardner vocal tracks in place) would be a dream come true!

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A all time great!
"You have brought music back into my home".This is a story about a man, who lost his wife, suffered loneliness, realized the value of his family and embraces his family once again in music and drama, and falls in love with a woman of great culture and life.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL TRANSFER OF A PERFECT MOVIE
SOUND OF MUSIC 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Fox) is the latest digital version of this beloved, timeless, film. The two-disc set features an exceptionally sharp transfer and a rich audio mix but the real treat is the new commentary with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer (this in addition to the late Robert Wise's commentary).

Elvis Presley does the clam--a now-forgotten dance--in this 1964 potboiler in which the King stars as a singer who gets a gig in Ft. Lauderdale with his combo but has to baby-sit a mobster's teenage daughter (Shelley Fabares) as part of the deal. Fabares's character, looking for a break, runs wild and makes life difficult for Elvis. The film has the usual "Elvis movie" bounce and wolfish jokes and glossy disposability, but the endearing (and smart) presence of Fabares as the love interest adds a bit more zip than usual. Songs include the title track, plus "Puppet on a String," "Do Not Disturb," and "Let's Party Tonight." Directed by Boris Sagal (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best representation of Bizet's
opera ever! It's very raw and authenic interpretation of both Merimee's and Bizet's story.Filmed in Spain back in 1984, the movie holds a special place in my imagination. Real places such as the cigarette factory, the bullring in Ronda where Escamillo received accolades for his bullfighting prowess. What I really liked about the movie are the performances by Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes. They brought Jose and Carmen to life with their dialogue and acting.
5-0 out of 5 stars A moving Carmen - the movie of the opera
You cannot close your eyes, the film adds something so special to the music even if Migenes is not the best voice Carmen ever had ... More beautiful than any other Carmen movie (let alone the opera on stage) because it was shot in Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Outstanding

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites and finally found it on DVD!
The acting's excellent, the music's amazing, and the combination of Mikhail Baryshnikov's--Misha's and Hines' dancing will blow you away.Russian ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov essentially plays himself--a Russian ballet star who escaped the USSR in the 1970's and sought asylum in the US.When a plane carrying him crashes over Russia, he's back in the Soviet net with no escape. His handler is Gregory Hines, a US dancer and US expatriate who renounced his US citizenship.
3-0 out of 5 stars Two Spectacular Performers Dance Around One Weak Cold War Thriller...Literally
Seeing this 1985 movie (dubbed without irony by director Taylor Hackford as a "political dance thriller" in his DVD commentary) over twenty years later in a pristine new print reminds me exactly what I thought about it back then. That is that Hackford recruited two world-class dancers of completely different genres and then went about and contrived a far-fetched Cold War thriller story around them. It is really the unparalleled dancing that makes this film still watchable beginning with Mikhail Baryshnikov's extraordinary performance of Roland Petit's ballet, "Le jeune homme et la mort", opposite Florence Faure over the opening credits. His artful athleticism inevitably makes the rest of his acting feel rather pedestrian, as he unsurprisingly portrays Nikolai Rodchenko, a world-renowned Russian ballet dancer who has defected to the US after having been the leading performer of the Kirov Ballet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Summer Nights
I love it that this is out in DVD so everyone can watch it over and over to see how these dancers work out and get in shape and see their joy in dancing.I was amazed at Baryshnikov's flexibility, when he does the splits on the floor, against the wall, and the strength of the jumps of both dancers.Hines' footwork was really beautiful, too.Being a dance devotee, I am always very impressed with the way dancers work so hard, and you could see it here. The movie had a fun plot that was serious, too.You knew it would end up okay but it made you think. The music was excellent and upbeat, too, as well as the scenes of Russia and the theater.I'm happy to have this in my permanent collection, because it's really a classic for dance fans. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Interesting Western With Great Singing!
This was for me a pretty good movie. I have seen all but one of this duo's movies and this is either the best or second best I have seen. It was amusing to see them play these parts. I really enjoyed seeing Buddy Ebson when he was really young! I was hoping he would dance though. The movie held my interest all the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fans-only film
Walter Pidgeon in an unsympathetic role? Jeanette MacDonald as a cowgirl who just happens to sing Liebestraum in a trained soprano, for patrons of her saloon? I don't think so either. Perhaps with a more astute production these challenges could have been overcome, but this film is not about giving MacDonald/Eddy suitable material...who needed to, if material like this would make the same amount of money for the studio?4-0 out of 5 stars MACDONALD AND EDDY IN OLD MONTEREY.
This was the fifth time around for this story. Originally, it was a play by David Belasco in 1905; it was made as three silents as well as an opera. In this version, Eddy and MacDonald were at the height of their popularity: their finest effort - MAYTIME -was filmed the year prior. The screenplay isn't exactly superlative and the direction drags a bit, but fans of the great singing duo should still find themselves semi-enthralled.Jeanette owns a rough gambling saloon and Nelson is a Zorro
