3-0 out of 5 stars Pleased To Meet You
If you are a real Sinatra buff, the song performances by Sinatra are what make this B-movie quality film worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overlooked Sinatra classic - Give it 5 stars!!
Shelley Winters has said that this movie began in chaos and ended in catastrophe. Sinatra at the time was divorcing his wife Nancy for filmland beauty Ava Gardner, and tensions on the set were palpable. Sinatra was distracted and angry, giving Miss Winters the brunt of his explosive temper; at one point she walked off the set and remained homebound for two days. None of this shows in the finished product, which was panned at the time of its release and thereafter mostly forgotten, even among Sinatra afionados. Frankly, it's one heck of an entertaining movie, expertly written, acted and directed and based not-so-loosely on the Hoboken crooner's rise to fame. Sinatra doesn't need to stretch his abilities much as the brash, cocky singer who's fast with his fists and ready to mouth off to anyone who ticks him off. Raymond Burr, prior to his Perry Mason role, was usually cast as brutish heavies; he's excellent as the nightclub-owning gangster who shakes down Sinatra. For Sinatra fans, Burr fans, rags-to-riches fans, '50s film noir fans, this one's a must. A forgotten 5-star gem!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra is impressive in dramatic musical
Saloon singer Danny Wilson (Frank Sinatra) is always getting into trouble due to his quick temper and has to rely on his friend and pianist Mike Ryan (Alex Nicol) to get him out of these many scrapes. Danny is sacked from various singing jobs and his career is going nowhere when he meets Joy Carroll (Shelley Winters). She introduces him to crooked club owner Nick Driscoll (Raymond Burr) who can see that Danny has star quality and potential. Unfortunately, Driscoll is a hoodlum and gangster and ties Danny to an unfair contract which gives Driscoll 50% of all the singers future earnings. Danny and Mike reluctantly agree to these outrageous terms of the contract just to get started but soon have cause to regret it when Danny becomes successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look...
Look you'll either love it or you'll hate it. There is not to much middle ground on this movie. I loved it. Yes it's crazzy, yes it's odd, yes it's historically incorect, but it's fun and it is full of vibrant energy. It is not quite your typical musical, but turn of the centry paris was not a typical town, and despite its flaws its an amazing and fun to watch movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Trash: An Abuse of History
This is a film for people who know nothing of history and don't mind seeing one of the most talented and tragic artists of all time portrayed as a singing and dancing life-of-the-partymidget. Never mind that the REAL star of the Moulin Rouge was an obese redhead (a far cry from Kidman) nicknamed "The Glutton", never mind that the film is chock full of ridiculous anachronism (who the hell sold these jerks the rights to "Smells like Teen Spirit", fer chrissakes??? they should be found and punished. Severely.), never mind that the entire film is directed to look exactly like an extended music video: Euen MacGregor is SO DREAMY WHEN HE SINGS and that is all that matters! (Ugh, excuse me for just a second: I feel ill.)
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing movie
I love "Moulin Rogue". I thought it was a beautiful, cool, and amazing film. The singing and the speical effects were incredible. It tells the story of Christan, a young writer who comes to Paris at the turn of the twenith century. He goes to the Moulin Rogue, a night club where he sees the "sparkling dimaond" the beautiful Satine who she falls in love with. But the Duke also wants Satine, and he is jealous of Christan and Satine's relionship. Nicole Kidman and Ewan Mcgregor are great actors, and I love the music and the increible feeling I get when I watch this movie. ... Read more

It's not exactly Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but this 1998 entry, starring Vanessa Williams and newcomer Chayanne offers its own terpsichorean pleasures. The story centers on Rafael Infante (Chayanne), a Cuban émigré to Texas, where he takes a menial job at a local dance studio run by John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson). There, he falls for Ruby Sinclair (Vanessa Williams), a one-time ballroom championship contender looking for the opportunity to compete for the title once more. The romance seems a foregone conclusion but has some snap thanks to a crisp performance by Williams and a sunny (if limited) one by Chayanne, a singing star in Puerto Rico. Best of all is the dancing itself. In terms of both energy, exuberance, and style, this film's dance sequences rank with the best of the decade's limited celebration of the kinetic art, such as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For dance lovers
Good movie to show people the difference between ballroom dance and fun dance. Best dance movie I ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be a winner - Dance with Me!
If you like to dance or like to watch other people dance then this is the movie for you. That's especially true if you like a latin beat in your music. Nice story line and in the end girl not only gets the trophy but gets the guy also!A little laughing and a little crying and a lot of dancing. What more could you ask for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Movie a little slow, dancing entertaining!
Overall this movie was a little slow, the plot was predictable, and it took a little long to get there. The best part of this movie was the dance sequences. The opening scene in Cuba looked completely staged and not authentic at all.The best part of this movie was the dance competition which comes at the end of the movie after you have sat through almost two hours of very drawn out rather boring scenes. ... Director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) solemnly alerts us to the glory that was Spinal Tap in his introduction to this "rockumentary" about the legendary British heavy-metal group, featuring lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and a succession of drummers whose careers were cut short by spontaneously combusting on their stool, drowning in somebody else's vomit, or otherwise perishing in untimely fashion. Under DiBergi's studious interrogation, the band and their familiars retrace the band's evolution from head-bopping Mersey Beat poseurs to head-banging metal poseurs, each change in musical direction or tonsorial chic having little effect on the surviving trio's sublime idiocy. For, as St. Hubbins (he's the "deep" one, relatively speaking) sagely observes, "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BAND IS GARBAGE!!!! THAT'S WHY THIS MOVIE IS SOOO FUNNY!!!!!
Most people doesn't realize that this band SUCK'S!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars 11/10
How to be a part of real Rock History without being a musician, singer, producer or someone in the music business? Answer: Make a movie as this one. Almost every serious Rock fan and rock star must have seen this movie or if they haven't, they had better see it before they go out and give another interview. Believe me, there are bands and performers who still talk and give interviews like Spinal Tap did in this movie. This movie is made for these guys. Like me, if you have watched countless interviews of rockstars, popstars and movie stars you cannot do without this classic. The Lead guitarist was my favourite. I could give him an Oscar for his brilliant performance. If Jimmy Page used a bow on his guitar you must wait and see what the lead guitarist ofSpinal Tap does.
4-0 out of 5 stars "No One Knows Who They Were Or What They Were Doing, But Their Legacy Remains"
A seering exploration of life behind the glitz and glamour of rock and roll? Not quite, but it is an amusing mock-u-mentry on a fictitious band named Spinal Tap and the trials and tribulations on the concert road for a group long past its glory days.

I ordered this supposedly rare color set thinking 23 dollars was a good price for fondmemories....what I got was a 1960s-70 VHS quality colorized copies...yes the tapes are still faded and the color unnatural in spots...Hollywood can do anything digially these days but whomever is distributing and making money on this evidently does not care.Amazon please include a note specifing what one is getting on your site ..a disclaimer at least..you are too good a company for this kind of business selling tapes one can record over the airwaves!!!!Also they are coming out with DVDS in May I hope they are better...

5-0 out of 5 stars Own The Best
I own all of Shirley's movies her best and her worst- if you are looking into buying a Shirley collection than this is the one to buy! Although, I'll say I'm disappointed that it dosn't include "Poor Little Rich Girl" or Shirley's most classic-"Bright Eyes"(On the good ship lollipop). But, this has some of Shirley at her best.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way To Introduce Anyone To Shirley Temple!!
This is a wonderful product! I recieved it as a birthday present from my parents and I loved it! It contains "Baby Take a Bow"-about a little girl who finds a stolen string of pearls and keeps them in her home for a nosy detective to find. Her father is accused of the crime. "Curly Top" is about a lonely man who adopts an adorable little youngster along with her grown-up sister, whom he falls in love with. "Heidi"...well you all know Heidi! The little orphan girl living with her grandfather who struggles to live a private life without people trying to take her away from him. All three films have been fully restored in colour with excellent sound quality...they almost match the standards of films from the early nineties. They all feature the darling Shirley Temple and come in a pretty red and gold box with cute pictures on it...totally worth it!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MAMBO KINGS
I found this movie just average, but then I might have expected more from this film because of all the hype it had been given.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Maria of My Soul
I rate this movie 3 stars and a half (or 7 out of 10), and I definetely recommend it to everyone. It is entertaining, the music is great, and the actors are good. I think this is the first movie Banderas did in America, and he was learning English while shooting the movie. He is a great actor, that caught the directors' eye for his roles in Almodvar's movies, and he did great. Jeremmy Irons did a screen test for that role, but Antonio got the job instead. The night club scenes are really good, and the best is the relationship between the two brothers, who leave Cuba behind searching for the American Dream (and trying to save Nstor's life).
4-0 out of 5 stars LooselyBased On The Hijuelos Novel
Oscar Hijuelos' great novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs Of Love forms the basis for this film although the movie version stops about halfway through Hijuelos' story largely ignoring the tragic second half of Cesar Castillo's life without his brother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easter Parade is the Easter Serenade!!
This motion picture, full of laughter, hapiness and wonderful music stars Judy Garland & Fred Astaire in their only film together.Judy plays Hannah Brown, a struggling "cabaret-ish" performer who is discovered by Don Hewes (Fred Astaire). As the minutes of this movie run you find romancetaking its roll and the wonderful music that accompanies this matsterpiece of Metro Goldwyn Mayer. This movie is one of the greatest musicals with no one better than Miss Judy Garland and Fred Astaire.Film Fact:Gene Kelly was to play opposite of Judy, but due to a broken leg suggested that they give the role of don Hewes to his good collegue Fred Astaire.Fred Astaire was in retirement at the time, but came out to work with Judy. All in all this film glorifies every aspect of the musical motion picture.I give you Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Ann Miller, and Peter Lawford in Glorious Technicolor, Easter Parade 1948.Enjoy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ASTAIRE & GARLAND - NUFF SAID!!
I'm typing away on this Easter evening while simultaneously watching Easter Parade on the TCM network. I haven't actually got the dvd so I can't comment on its transfer quality, special features, etc. I can, however, comment on the movie itself. I just want to let whoever's reading this know that Easter Parade ranks right up there with the very best of musicals. The backstory on this film is that Gene Kelly was originally slated to co-star with Judy Garland, but because of an injury, had to bow out. Enter Fred Astaire, who was in semi-retirement but who agreed to do the movie after having received Kelly's blessing. Easter Parade was so well received that a second pairing of Astaire and Garland was scheduled but due to Garland's (ahem) personal issues, that regretfully never came to pass.

2-0 out of 5 stars A weak film stuffed with a host of future stars
Let me speak bluntly: this is a remarkably weak B comedy that would not be watched or remembered today except for a quite astonishing collection of future Hollywood stars. The film's plot was hackneyed even when it was made: a Texas university with a lousy football team discovers a hick from Arkansas with a throwing arm for the ages, entices him to join their team, and enjoy exceptional gridiron success. If the film were peopled entirely with performers who were today unknown, there would be no motivation for anyone to see this. But given that the football star from Arkansas has a sister played by Judy Garland, the coach by her future costar in THE WIZARD OF OZ Jack Haley, and the rest of the cast filled out by such Hollywood stalwarts future musical superstar and pin up girl Betty Grable, star character actor Elisha Cook Jr. (THE MALTESE FALCON, THE BIG SLEEP, PHANTOM LADY, and SHANE), and Grady Sutton, the butt of a thousand jokes in various comedies of the thirties and forties. And if one is very, very attentive, it is possible to spot Alan Ladd in an uncredited role as one of the college students.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cornpone Humor, Football, & Judy Garland's Feature Debut
Yale invites the University of Texas to compete in a charity football game--but a secretary fumbles the communication and extends the invitation to tiny Texas State University instead.New coach Slug Winters (Jack Haley) and his harridan wife Bessie (Patsy Kelly) manage to whip the team into shape, but when an accident sidelines the star player they find an unexpected replacement in barefoot yokel Amos Dodd (Stuart Erwin)... and before you can say Sis Boom Bah every one is off to the big game!4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, unassuming, old-fashioned comedy
This college comedy is notable as the onscreen debut of the teenage diva-to-be, Judy Garland, but it also stands on its own as a fine, fluffy '30s comedy.A small-town college in Texas is accidentally invited to meet Yale in a nationally-watched football match. It's the biggest thing that's ever happened at good old TSU, and the student body is understandably all worked up about it -- moved to stage musical shows and pep rallies galore, as a matter of fact.Garland, who was constantly miscast in her early career, enters the picture as the snub-nosed hayseed little sister of TSU's new star quarterback, an Arkansas [kid] who can pitch a long pass with devastating accuracy. The real stars of the show, though, are the team's coach, played by comedian Jack Haley (later to work with Garland as the Tin Woodman) and the brassy, wisecracking Patsy Haley, as the coach's sports-savvy, shrewish wife. The plot isn't too flimsy and pleasantly zips along, bouyed by some choice performances by all concerned.Yeah, Betty Grable's in there, too, but only in a bit part; half the musical numbers are provided by vocal quartet from the Catskills circuit known as the Yacht Club Boys... Their middleaged appearances are deftly explained by a goofy number called "Sophmores 'Til The Day We Die"; even more hilarious is a political numer called "Down With Everything!" which is sung in honor of a young Bolshie agitator who appears in order to rile up the locals, but winds up instead ont he wrong side of Texas justice.Sports fans will be gratified by the finale, which edits in some tantalizing archival footage of a 1930s Yale game, played in a howling blizzard.Fun film all around... and you can certainly see why the studio heads went ga-ga over Garland! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Could well be the best DVD on the market
Given that the movie is wonderful, perhaps the last of the great Hollywood musicals and a charmer for all generations, this DVD is still remarkably wonderful. Disney has done a clean-up job on the film that makes it shine. The audio is rich and wonderful, including the all-important ORIGINAL stereo soundtrack (feh to multi-channel remixes!). The special features even manage to elucidate the process of filmmaking in manner intriguing to both the cineaste parent and Mary-mad children.
5-0 out of 5 stars thank you, Julie and Dick (and Walt, of course)!
I think I like this movie more now than when I was a kid! And the extra features on this 2-DVD set are absolutely wonderful. Great interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, one of the Sherman brothers (songwriter), and the girl who played Jane that really show how special the movie-making process was, which then translated to joy on the screen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful story and lovely music
Mary Poppins must be one of the loveliest filming produced by Disney studios. This musical movie is extremely well produced and has outstanding actor work. The scenes are of high quality despite the whole story was filmed indoors. Even the little part of London was reproduced in Disney studio. The music from Sherman brothers is world famous and well known. When you hear the first tunes, you might say: Hey I've heard that somewhere! Editorial Review

Film buffs and critics can argue until their faces turn blue about whether this lavish Dickensian musical deserved the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1968, but the movie speaks for itself on grandly entertaining terms. Adapted from Dickens's classic novel, it's one of the most dramatically involving and artistically impressive musicals of the 1960s, directed by Carol Reed with a delightful enthusiasm that would surely have impressed Dickens himself. Mark Lester plays the waifish orphan Oliver Twist, who is befriended by the pickpocketing Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and recruited into the gang of boy thieves led by Fagin (played to perfection by Ron Moody). The villainous Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) casts his long shadow over Oliver and his friends, but the young orphan is still able to find loving care in the most desperate of circumstances. Full of memorable melodies and splendid lyrics, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hurray for Oliver and Nancy!
This movie was great!Nancy who was so brave, protected Oliver. At first she thought Bill Sykes[Oliver Reed]was a good man, but when she later discovered he was bad.She was trying to protect Oliver, sense she had got so used to how nice he was in the beginning, she didn't now he would kill her.I watched this movie and when he killed her at the bridge scene, I was shocked!but it's just acting.I myself am an actor.!My favorite movies are
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful musical adaptation of a classic!
This is a great film and true in spirit and basic plot to Dickens. The songs are melodicallywonderful and the choreography is original, fresh and keeps your eyes constantly on the screen. The movie is very well cast and Ron Moody is wonderful as Fagin. He is "nicer" than in the book (maybe it's the pet owl they gave him)but his basic motivations and actions remain the same albeit he has a happier more ambiguous ending in the film. Oliver Reed is probably a more physically attractive Bill Sikes than the one most people imagine from reading Dickens' work but he is certainly menacing and scary.Nancy, also, is much lovelier (as well as older) than the novel describesbut the part is excellently acted and sung by Shani Wallis. The child actors are all engaging and do not have the smugness (well the Artful and Charlie are supposed to be "cheeky") too many times seen in young kids in movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect on all counts
As a child I fell in love with this movie back in 1968.When viewed again on DVD, I was delighted to see it's still as fresh, engaging and rich an experience as it was 38 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suffers from Widescreen cropping
This film was made in Widescreen and it should be shown in its original format. All the production numbers take advantage of widescreen format and in this "pan-and-scan" video form they are "squeezed" in a way which does not do them justice. I was impressed by the beautiful "I speak to the stars" but the other production numbers were ruined by pan & scan. DVD please... ... Read more

At first glance, a musical period comedy-drama about Gilbert and Sullivan seems an odd fit for British filmmaker Mike Leigh, who made his name with searing, intense contemporary dramas such as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid
Ignore the drunken sots who pointlessly rail against this film. It is a fantastic production; witty and elegantly presented. I can't say enough good things about it, and I hope it keeps being discovered by people. It can be found on cable, in case you can't find the DVD anymore.

1-0 out of 5 stars will you have your tedium rare or medium?
Watching this movie, I kept hoping that somehow it would splice itself in with Jurassic Park, and that hungry dinosaurs would rampage and gobble the cast. Now that would be entertaining.I rented this movie in the purest of good faith. My good faith was pure as the driven snow.It was Snow White, cloaked in red, rusticating at the home of the dwarves. You know, in the original fairy tale, it wasn't dwarves, if you follow me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Movie
I watch this movie maybe once every two months (or six viewings a year). I doubt I'll ever tire of seeing it. For the time one watches Topsy-Turvy, one feels completely transported into the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, it's so fully developed and well-realized. It's a lot of fun, very witty, with a truly astounding cast, and captures (often subtly) both dark and light aspects of its characters and the time period. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great example of a great American musical!
When I watch a musical I want to be entertained and this movie is very entertaining. When you combine the talents of Betty Grable with the escapism of a South Seas set you have a formula of great cinema.Be it a little campy it's campiest at its best. Also a measure of good film quality is the enduring story and production values.I enjoyed watching this movie as a boy just as I enjoyed watching it last week, many years later.Like music, that is a way to judge if you have a classic. From a historical prospective this is a great example of this genre.

2-0 out of 5 stars Song of the islands
I love Betty Grables films, but this one I was'nt too keen on,it didn't have a much of a story to it really, sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slowly but surely!
This movie was slow to the point and lacked excitement. But there was only one scene that I chuckled on, it was when the old hawaiian lady's uncle; chewed on a leg from an animal. As he took a bite, he crunched on the bones of the leg; looking like a wildman with a wild eyed stare at the visitor of the island. Turned out that the old lady's uncle was a cannibal. The only thing that kept this movie from dying out, was the dancing and singing from Betty Grable, and the old Hawaiian lady. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars could ANYBODY resist a taina elg musical?
george cukor only ventured into musicals on rare occasions. two of those ("a star is born" and "my fair lady") are classics; "les girls" is assuredly not. this was gene kellys last mgm musical, and cole porters penultimate score of any kind, and neither master is at his peak; as a matter of fact theyre both pretty close to their nadirs. kellys attempt at parodying marlon brando in "the wild one" (already a passe reference by the time this was filmed) is downright embarrassing, and the supporting "girls" (when mitzi gaynor is the biggest star among them) just kinda sit there like a lump. if thats entertainment ...
4-0 out of 5 stars "Rashomon" with music and beauties, energized by Kay Kendall
As several other reviewers have commented, this film, Gene Kelly's last musical with MGM, borrows its central conceit from Akira Kurosawa's immortal "Rashomon" - only this time, the central event isn't a murder, but a tangled love affair involving a song-and-dance man (Kelly) and his three gorgeous backups (Kendall, Mitzi Gaynor and Taina Elg) which becomes the subject of a media-magnet London lawsuit. The lovely, much-lamented Kendall's performance is the core of this movie (her drunken-opera scene is not to be missed!) but Elg, Gaynor and Kelly all turn in highly creditable work as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gene Kelly's farewell to MGM
The three "That's Entertainment" films highlighted the great musicals made by MGM from 1929 to 1958, but they did not include any of this marvelous late musical film (released in 1957), which was apparently Gene Kelly's final production for the Culver City studio.Released near the end of the great musical era at MGM, "Les Girls" was also the final film to have original songs (and lyrics) by Cole Porter.(Porter's final score was for the 1958 CBS special "Aladdin.")
