4-0 out of 5 stars The Oscar-winning film version of Sondheim's Send in the Clowns musical!
Based on Ingmar Bergman's film SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, this musical film adapted by the Broadway creator's Hugh Wheeler (screenplay), Sondheim (Music and Lyrics) and Hal Prince (director), concerns three mismatched couples.
4-0 out of 5 stars To watch it more helps you to appreciate it more
Having seen the stage play several times I can appreciate the movie for what it is.The movie is much slower and less funny than the stage play, yet the movie has some much more tender moments and dramatic flair.I love being able to see the held close ups of Taylor and Cariou.I love the chemistry of these two. Also, the movie fills in parts that cannot be done on stage.Yes,songs are cut from the stage version, but new lyrics for WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY ,GLAMOUROUS LIFE and EVERY DAY A LITTLE DEATH make this interesting for a Prince-Sondheim fan.It definately is different than the original show, but I love it and watch it often.I always laugh when Cariou and Taylor are chortling about "her Dragooooooon!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Worse But I Don't Know How
I saw this in the theater in 1978 after having seen it on stage in its national tour. What a disappointment! When the line "If she'd only been fat" was sung, the audience laughed.Liz was pretty plump, and she couldn't sing. She slaughtered "Send In the Clowns".Hal Prince elmininated the quintet and all of their wonderful songs. What was he thinking? I did enjoy the rewrite of "The Glamourous Life" and some new lyrics for "Weekend In the Country". All in all, though, the best part of the evening was when it ended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Lovely!
This is a delightful MGM musical that has not gotten the credit that it deserves. The amazing duo of Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel are wonderful...as usual. Marge and Gower Champion and Ann Miller add beautiful dancing, and Red Skelton adds humor. The songs are great. Kathryn Grayson performs "Yesterdays" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Howard Keel sings "The Most Exciting Night" and "Lovely to Look At." Grayson and Keel sing "Your Devestating" and "The Touch of Your Hand". Ann Miller dances to and sings "I'll Be Hard to Handle", and Marge and Gower Champion sing "I Won't Dance". Finally, Gower Champion, Howard Keel, and Red Skelton sing my personal favorite song, "Lafayette". I also love the fashion show at the end with gowns designed by Adiran! If you like musicals, you should see this movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and colorful musical!
I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did.Katheryn Grayson and Howard Keel, sing there way into love, and also this films has the lovely dancing couple Marge and Gower Champion along with the ever funny Red Skelton, and beautiful and talented dancer Ann Miller. The costumes and dance numbers are a feast for the eyes. It's really a well done remake of the 1930's "Roberta," musical staring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. In fact I enjoyed it much better.I think it deserves 5 stars and stands on it's on, as a beautiful musical film of the 1950'sThe vocals done my Keel and Grayson are really quite beautiful to hear. It's well worth viewing for any fan of musicals. It has a little of everything, drama, romance, comedy, song, dance, and a good plot as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Certain moments are quite stunning.
I've always thought this film got a short shrift because it dared to be a remake of an Astaire-Rogers film. But, to be fair, it's a perfectly capable "Roberta" remake, in lush color for the first time, and there are a few notable differences in plot. The heir to the salon is a songwriter instead of a football star (which better suits the talents of Red Skelton anyway), the singing designer (Grayson) has a vocal counterpart (Keel), and the dancers-- former sweethearts in the first film-- meet for the first time here. I always thought it was strange that Astaire and Rogers' dances were presented as isolated stage duets rather than integrated into the plot of the story. In the case of Marge & Gower Champion, their dances advance their love story-- first with "I Won't Dance," cleverly staged with dresser mannequins, then with the film's masterpiece, the dreamy "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," presented in an emptying cafe which magically becomes a starlit dance floor, bathed in midnight blue. It's one of the most romantic dances ever presented on film. Also nice are the Keel/Grayson challenge duet of "You're Devastating" and Skelton's piano cut-up of "Go Tell Aunt Brodie."The only disappointment is the gaudy fashion show-- but it was just as bad in the first version of the story!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Could well be the best DVD on the market
Given that the movie is wonderful, perhaps the last of the great Hollywood musicals and a charmer for all generations, this DVD is still remarkably wonderful. Disney has done a clean-up job on the film that makes it shine. The audio is rich and wonderful, including the all-important ORIGINAL stereo soundtrack (feh to multi-channel remixes!). The special features even manage to elucidate the process of filmmaking in manner intriguing to both the cineaste parent and Mary-mad children.
5-0 out of 5 stars thank you, Julie and Dick (and Walt, of course)!
I think I like this movie more now than when I was a kid! And the extra features on this 2-DVD set are absolutely wonderful. Great interviews with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, one of the Sherman brothers (songwriter), and the girl who played Jane that really show how special the movie-making process was, which then translated to joy on the screen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful story and lovely music
Mary Poppins must be one of the loveliest filming produced by Disney studios. This musical movie is extremely well produced and has outstanding actor work. The scenes are of high quality despite the whole story was filmed indoors. Even the little part of London was reproduced in Disney studio. The music from Sherman brothers is world famous and well known. When you hear the first tunes, you might say: Hey I've heard that somewhere! Having this DVD on your shelf would please both you and your younger fellows. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars innovative introduction to opera
I bought this years ago for nieces and nephews who loved it. Rebought it recently when my grandson was 9 months old. Now, at 15 months, when he stays with us, it's the on;y thing he wants to see(over and over). He now hums and dances to the music and jabbers at the screen. I wish there was a sequel! This is such an incredible, painless and pleasurable way to introduce children(and adults) to the incredible world of opers

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing I didn't like about it was. . .
that there wasn't more of it.Someone should do a sequel; there are so many wonderful arias and choruses that could be treated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Continuing source of great pleasure
We received this as a gift years ago and we've played it innumerable times to the delight of our now 8 year old granddaughter who has viewed it since she was 2. It is so creative, perhaps the most imaginative approach to opera for persons of all ages. There are some scenes of violent acts (murder and suicide)which are managed in a reasonably sensitive way. Even so, children over the age of 5-6 will recognize what has occured. ... Read more

Editorial Review

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace for John Waters
I first heard of Hairspray a few years ago when Harvey Fierstein was winning acclaim playing the transvestite role on Broadway. I heard of it once again, when I read that John Travolta would be playing that same role in a theatrical version of the film. Around this same time I saw a movie called "Pink Flamingos" which led me to discovering John Waters, which led me to finding this film. "Hairspray" is not Waters' best (in my opinion), but it's definitely a special and funny film that is a far cry from other efforts by Waters. First off, it's his first and only film to have a rating under 'R' (In fact, it's rated PG) and while it still contains a few vulgarities; It's actually a pretty tame movie. The film takes place in the 60's, where hair (and hairspray) was the rage. Equally popular is The Corny Collins Show, a TV dance party that all the kids just eat up. One in particular though, dreams of being on the show and becoming famous. This is Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake, 'Serial Mom')...
1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy movie
I saw the stage production and thought that since it was good the movie would be good also. I was very wrong. The movie is awful

3-0 out of 5 stars What Great Fun
What great fun I had watching this movie. I really enjoyed the music, and the characters in the movie were just like the kids were back then.I was taken back to the days of American Bandstand and other dance shows of that era. Really fun to watch and fun to remember........ ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love to dance
This is a great series for begining bellydancing. It will help you work all the way up and you can go at your own pace. The Instructors are knowledgeable and I love the format of the video. Overall worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging but great instruction
I found this tape to be a great instruction for more difficult moves , that are not found in beginner tapes.I think the instructions in these tapes are the most complete and easy to understand than in most other belly dance instructional videos. Neena and Veena are always shown at full body view, and turn sideways to show further instruction to some movements. They show footwork , and one nice thing is that they do not wear overwhelming costumes so you are allowed to see the movements without obstruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for review and practice
If you are a beginner, this video will help you expand your basic bellydance vocabulary and improve the technique. It will also help you understand how bellydance moves can be combined to form a dance. For an intermediate dancer, the "Beyond Basic Dance" routine can be a valuable supplement to your regular practice. Everything is shown very clearly, good pace, clean simple choreography. I found it very useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific dance video and great exercise!
I bought this dvd because I was out of shape, looking for some variety in my workout routine, and because it was so well rated.
4-0 out of 5 stars Spontaneous dance, great instruction, somewhat poor structure
I will warn everyone that this is workout is not typical aerobic-style workouts, where there is a strict structure and pattern of dance. Wyoma imparts the spontaneity of African dance into the class, and while she guides you on the dances, she does not give you counts or very many transitions. Wyoma is a dancer, and is not approaching this from an aerobic exercise perspective. This workout is going to be different from your Crunch or Tae-Bo workouts.

Am a recent startup fan with Rieu and have enjoyed two other concert CD's.The only disappointment I have with this VHS tape is that it appears to have not recorded the entire concert.Otherwise it is as good as you can get with VHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars lighthearted and lovely
After a few minutes of introductory rehearsal footage and backstage warm-ups, this concert from Holland goes into full swing with one of the many Johann Strauss waltzes to grace "a whole evening of Viennese music". 5-0 out of 5 stars the most joyous music
I have always adored Strauss waltzes. This video has some songs in it that I had never heard before. They are all absolutely wonderful; a very happy, joyous musical treat. I saw Andre and the JSO in concert last month. The music was the most beautiful I have ever heard! His interaction with the orchestra and the audience is so different from other classical performers who are so solemn.Everybody in the concert hall had a great time.I hope other videos will be available soon. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Music
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb--I do not use the word lightly--extended three song set by singer/pianist Hazel Scott (who later married the controversial minister/politician Adam Clayton Powell Jr.) about halfway through the film. It has absolutely nothing to do with the plot but is magnificent nonetheless. Robert Alda deserves to be remembered perhaps not for his work in this film but for his origination of the role of gambler Sky Masterson in the great musical Guys and Dolls.

3-0 out of 5 stars First the bad news
This is one of those films that seems WAY longer than it actually is, and it's not exactly short to begin with. Second, I can think of better leads than Alda. But he was actually better than I'd thought he'd be. What makes this film a little gem is seeing people like Hazel Scott act and perform, as well as all the great music and historical perspective the film offers. Hopefully, we'll be seeing it on DVD soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not historically accurate, but still good fun.
Robert Alda stars in this odd, melodramatic potboiler which looks at the rags-to-rich (and more riches) rise of one of America's greatest popular composers. The film is hampered by a few small points, one being that Gershwin's life doesn't readily lend itself to dramatic portrayal (until the very end, when he drops dead at a very young age, and your jaw just drops)... The problem is that guy was just too darn successful! He hit a groove and never stopped, moving from one huge critical success to another (with one or two flops in between)... The scriptwriters were obviously aware of this, and insert several belabored sequences wherein Gershwin anguishes over this or that, and a couple of sniffly, symbolic deathbed scenes, just for good measure.Other problems include Alda himself (yes, he's Alan's dad...) who isn't completely up to the role, as well as the weak portrayal of George's brother Ira, a super-brilliant, super-important lyricist, who is here presented as a mere hanger-on and cheerleader for his brother, the big-shot genius.Hello?Excuse me... Ira Gershwin?!?Of the Gershwin brothers?Oh, forget it.Oh, also check out Gershwin's kooky pal Oscar Levant, who plays himself, in a somewhat true-to-life portrayal as George's confidant and stand-in concertizer.Other celebrities who play themselves here include Al Jolson and bandleader Paul Whiteman... and the music, of course, can't be beat. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A flashy, mostly bad experience...
A lot of people seem to describe this as one of those movies that are "so bad, it's good."I cannot agree.
5-0 out of 5 stars My #1 favorite movie, EVAH!
There, I admitted it!And it feels good!
3-0 out of 5 stars Some parts good, most parts bad
The good: Jeff Lynne (ELO), Gene Kelly's performance at 68!, A few songs and dance numbers. The bad: poor writing, poor acting, sorry, but ONJ sings about every song to the point of irritation. Considering when it was made- disco dying, roller rinks popping up around the nation, neon special effects, Tina Turner's tiger girls (does anybody remember them?) and leg warmers, it's a wonder this movie is still in circulation. The story is weak, the screenplay is fragmented and comes off as plan stupid -sorry but it's pretty much covered in other reviews, it's like a rock in the dryer - the characters just bang along. It may be worth a watch if you're interested in seeing a time capsule view of the 70s-80s this movie has it all, including a Don Bluth animation piece with ONJ's character-as a bird- wearing leg warmers. There is a feel that this was slapped together with everyone adding a new idea at the last minute. Thank goodness Jeff Lynne wasn't having other artists changing his songs. If you do decide to watch it, you'll have to suffer through the ONJ/Beck scenes to get to some good songs and big dance scenes - this is the only movie I've ever seen where a contemporary band, the tubes, merge with a 40's big band and they don't miss a beat, btw, the 8 muses always looked great when they popped up. Sadly, this was Kelly's last dancing part, he probably deserved better but I'm sure it was better than Plan 9 from outer space, the musical. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A 27 year old playing a 16 -18 year old?
There are pros and cons about this version as there is with the 1963 version. Ann Margret was 22 when she played the teenage Kim. She could pass for a high school teenager much better than 27-year-old Chynna Phillips. Ironically this role should have gone to Chynna's younger half sister, Bijoux, who was 15 at the time this movie was made.

4-0 out of 5 stars One stares with wonderment at Eleanor Powell.
The plot of this enjoyable MGM musical is contrived and only occasionally amusing, dealing with espionage and romance but the focus of the film is properly pointed upon the tuneful interludes showcasing the enormously talented and athletic tap dancing Eleanor Powell, abetted by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra, featuring Ziggy Elman, Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra. Red Skelton shares top billing with Powell, and he and sidekick Bert Lahr are given most of the comedic minutes, although Skelton is more effective when he, if it can be believed, performs as Powell's love interest, with Virginia O'Brien actually providing most of the film's humor as the dancer's companion. The technical brilliance of Powell is evidenced during one incredible scene within which Buddy Rich contributes his drumming skills, and which must be viewed several times in order to permit one's breathing to catch up with her precision. Director Edward Buzzell utilizes his large cast well to move the action nicely along despite the rather disjointed script with which he must deal, and permits Powell's cotangent impossibilities to rule the affair, as is appropriate.
2-0 out of 5 stars I'd rate it 4 stars, except for the rotten sound on this VHS
My two-star rating is for this particular VHS version, not for the movie. This is a fun musical comedy with Eleanor Powell, Burt Lahr, Virginia O'Brien, Red Skelton, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra at their best. It opens with the band performing "Hawaiian War Chant," featuring spectacular solo playing by trombonist Dorsey, drummer Buddy Rich, and trumpeter Ziggy Ellman. Unfortunately, the sound quality on this VHS is so poor that only about 25 percent of the dialogue is understandable. This is no exaggeration--it's so bad it needs subtitles. The musical numbers are also diminished by the poor sound. I recently saw the movie on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), and the sound was fine. My recommendation: Don't waste money on this VHS version. Wait for it to show again on TCM, or until it's reissued on a quality DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eleanor Powell's BEST
It is such a pity that Eleanor Powell, the fastest dancer in the world, did not make more musicals. However, this gem of a musical ranks as her best movie. Two of her best numbers, "I'll Take Tallulah" and"Hawaiian War Chant", are with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. It wasgreat to see the star members of the Dorsey organization as well, liketrumpeter Ziggy Ellman and drummer Buddy Rich. As well as his starvocalists like:Jo Stafford, the Pied Pipers, and Frank Sinatra.Read more

If you own a widescreen television, or plan to one day, DO NOT BUY THIS DVD! It is mislabled "Enhanched for Widescreen TVs (aka Anamorphic Widescreen), and it is definitely NOT! And the picture qualitiy on a widescreen T.V. is abysmal! I'm returning it and demanding a refund!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tape for Beginners
This is a great tape for beginners. It shows you all the basic steps needed to start dancing socially. The steps are timeless even though the tape is a little dated. If you practice each segment on the tape you should feel comfortable enough to get started dancing in public- and that's the key to enjoying dancing. The first time you get on a dance floor you will want to show off your new talents. Buy the tape and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instruction vs. Inspiration
Clear instructions, but with a very "1950's feel".Everything appears very dated, not making one anxious to learn the steps and get out there and have fun.But the movements are well explained and shown clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to-dance tape
Margot Scholz clearly tells us how to dance. She shows the steps slowly at first and then faster with a partner. She covers the basics of form, posture, and leading in addition to the foot movements. She picks good rhythms that are easy to dance to.It is the best tape we found and my partner and I tried a good half dozen.Margot is the best. ... Editorial Review

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - True Entertainment
This 1954 musical release is just too good/too fun to pass up. Adam (Howard Keel - oh my god, what a voice) needs a wife and zeros in on Milly (Jane Powell) to drag back to his Oregon Territory farm and six unruly brothers. The tiny beauty has a backbone and rises to the challenge. Milly makes believers out of them. The brothers decide they want wives of their own and kidnap more cuties from town. Whoops, they forgot to drag the preacher along too and the pass gets snowed-in for winter.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Hollywood Musical
A huge backwoodsman comes into town one day, looking at all the unmarried women in town. The next thing you know he has found a woman who wants to marry him, they get hitched and they head for his home in the mountain. The man is Adam Pontipee, played by Howard Keel. The woman is Milly Pontipee, played by beautiful Jane Powell.Of course Adam's search for a bride is accompanied by a song and glares from many of the townspeople.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bless those Sobbin' Women!
My sibling's and I loved this movie when we were young.Something about the movie made my sister and I bond, by fighting over which brother was the cutiest, and we could always con my brother into learning the dances with us!It truly is a movie that brought my family closer.I gave the DVD to both of them for Christmas a few years ago, and somehow, one of us always pulls out a copy when we are all together and we end up watching it.

Editorial Review

Joseph Mankiewicz's brightly stylized film of Frank Loesser's classic musical (based on the stories of Damon Runyon) casts the criminal underworld as a harmless fantasy in this whimsical vision of the Big Apple. Nonsingers Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons acquit themselves fine in the lead roles as high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson and Salvation Army missionary Sarah Brown. It's odd casting, to say the least. Frank Sinatra, who plays the good old reliable Nathan Detroit (who runs "the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York") is left with novelty tunes while husky Brando delivers the love songs and hits, including "Luck Be a Lady." But in the context of the colorful dialogue and comically affected speech patterns (a giddy gangster-speak straight out of Runyon's breezy stories) the song performances aren't the least out of place. Stubby Kaye, reprising his role as Nicely Nicely from the Broadway run, practically steals the show in his few scenes and his show-stopping solo "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." The film is overlong at two and a half hours and somewhat stagily confined in the stylized, studio-bound sets--perhaps the mark of a director who had never helmed a musical before--but a terrific cast of eccentrics and Michael Kidd's high-energy choreography gives the film a memorable and enchanting character. I am VERY fond of this musical.I first saw it on stage 4 years ago without knowing the plot, and I was thoroughly delighted by the musical's humor, catchy tunes, and interesting characters.
