5-0 out of 5 stars Getting there...slowly
So - the CD soundtrack to this wonderful movie has finally been released.Don't delay, FSM are only producing a few copies of it (and I have one of them!).FSM are to be congratulated on a beautifully produced set of three CDs.Pure magic!
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bye Mr Chips with Peter O'Toole and Petual Clark
One of the finest films ever produced with outstanding music.I have other editions of this story, but none reach the standards of this masterpiece.I look forward to a release of this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest musicals we possess
It has always been a mystery to me as to the reasons behind the fashionable distaste for the musical version of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips."I've never been able to solve the mystery, but it is merely fashionability. The score is one of the most beautiful ever written -- I've listened to it across the span of my entire life from the time it was released in 1969 and have yet to find it anything but extraordinary. The film is a moving depiction of what love is really about and never fails to move me.The performances by both Peter O'Toole (why has Hollywood thought it useful to cheat this great actor of his due with a "real" Oscar -- sheer jealousy?) and Petula Clark are extraordinary. Yet, a strange, and, to me, bizarre cult of disparagement has risen about this film. Don't be fooled by fools who wish to belittle real talent. This is one of the all-time great musicals. Don't miss it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen investsthis rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living inthe Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano JanePowell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Janeproceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. Butold habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film'scelebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brandof advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away withsuch a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genialearnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - True Entertainment
This 1954 musical release is just too good/too fun to pass up. Adam (Howard Keel - oh my god, what a voice) needs a wife and zeros in on Milly (Jane Powell) to drag back to his Oregon Territory farm and six unruly brothers. The tiny beauty has a backbone and rises to the challenge. Milly makes believers out of them. The brothers decide they want wives of their own and kidnap more cuties from town. Whoops, they forgot to drag the preacher along too and the pass gets snowed-in for winter.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Hollywood Musical
A huge backwoodsman comes into town one day, looking at all the unmarried women in town. The next thing you know he has found a woman who wants to marry him, they get hitched and they head for his home in the mountain. The man is Adam Pontipee, played by Howard Keel. The woman is Milly Pontipee, played by beautiful Jane Powell.Of course Adam's search for a bride is accompanied by a song and glares from many of the townspeople.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bless those Sobbin' Women!
My sibling's and I loved this movie when we were young.Something about the movie made my sister and I bond, by fighting over which brother was the cutiest, and we could always con my brother into learning the dances with us!It truly is a movie that brought my family closer.I gave the DVD to both of them for Christmas a few years ago, and somehow, one of us always pulls out a copy when we are all together and we end up watching it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Re-Mastered DVD a MUST !!!
This and "ALL" of the mgm musicals need to be re-mastered in Dolby Digital DVD right away so we can ENJOY the way it was meant to be seen...

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical Esther Williams
Neptune's Daughter is a farcical story of an Olympic swimmer named Eve who becomes a swimsuit designer. As a result of her beauty and talent in the pool, a businessman proposes that Eve join his swimsuit firm as head designer and model.Ester Williams as Eve plays the part of the 'trained seal' who designs the swimsuits. Her other charge is her little sister Betty, an unhappily unmarried woman determined to do just about anything to rectify her man-less situation. As we can see, poor Eve has her hands full. Not only is she a competent career woman, she must also baby-sit Betty as she throws herself at the South American polo team (appropriately coming to town for the North-South American polo match that month).Of course, the handsome man comes along (Jos, the captain of said polo team) and despite many silly mix-ups, all works out in the end: Eve and Betty both get married to their respective men and the world is set straight again.4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleasing musical!
Great songs, and two love stories in one make Neptune's Daughter a movie to watch when you need a good pick-me-up.You'll be humming the songs for the rest of the day, and if you're like me you'll fall in love with the dress(you'll know which one!)! One of my favorite musicals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Movie That Told The Real Story
After seeing the movie, I did some research on the life of Eddy Duchin. The movie closely follows his real life, not a spectacular made up story for the audience.Tyrone Power plays Eddy Duchin powerfully. It is a story of a person who, without any formal paiano training but with a dream. comes to New York to make it through fortitude at the then Casino in Central Park and subsequently at the Waldorf Astoria. It is sad how his wife, played by Kim Novak, dies after child birth and he dies at the age of 31 of leukemia. It reveals the lack of medical knowledge during his time. The music is great. The conflicts between Eddy and his son Peter are brought out. The movie ends on a sad note when Eddy dies after finally obtaining the love of his son who felt abandoned by his father.

5-0 out of 5 stars In the good old Summertime 1949
IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME -a tale of squabbling music shop clerk who dont know they are romantic pen pals -shares a celebrated movie lineage that includes many remakes . In betwheen those two Judy Garland (1922-1969) and Van Johnson (1916- ) , had mail plus gold old tunes evoking an era of strawboaters and silvery moons . Sparked by Garland?s comedic zest and musical appeal this confections is one of the sweetest , most unpretentious entertainment of 1949 . It?s also a nostalgic farawell and a sunny hallo . Buster Keaton (1895-1966) appears in his final film for the studios he first joined in 1928 and hi is enormoeus funny in this movie . Liza Minelli (1946-) , all of 18 months young makes her debut in the finale . A Superb M-G-M Musical from the biggest and best studio of that time , Transfer in Ultra-Resolution Quality . Recommended

4-0 out of 5 stars good musical
lot of good songs--enjoyed it very much--can't beat Liza singing "Have Yourself a Merry Christmas"

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Delight
This is my favorite Judy Garland movie. The DVD is a faithful reproduction of the movie and has, as expected, a pictorial clarity unheard of in the movie era.The flawless reproduction is tarnished, however, in a scene near the end of the movie. In the scene, the lights are low and were corrected to present reality. They were rendered so dark that the stars, Van Johnson and Judy Garland, were nothing more than silhouettes on the screen. From the tape version of the movie, this scene was one of Judy's most hilarious scenes, attributed to the expressions she delivered in response to Mr. Johnson's advances, both of which were unseen in the black. The DVD is worth watching, but, for students of Judy Garland's talents, a tape version clarifies the omissions of the DVD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Vulgar
But worth a dime, brother, if you can spare one. Just kidding, folks. Give us a kiss. Truth is, why is it I wonder if I was fully alive before picking up the BB Collection? What a bargain! Films like this are those my parents soaked up --- to whom I owe my own existence. This is another stunner. Frivolous and frothy with snappy dialogue, sexy as hell, and an entertaining story at one level; with an undercurrent of apprehension, yet determination to kill depression. The dance numbers are out of this world. Especially those violins and spiral dresses. Visual caviare. The girls in the money are a line-up of absolute dazzlers; the choicest selection of cuties I've ever seen, knocking spots off any modern stable of fillies. Sweet and lovely. There aren't any such, these days. Just hard-boiled graduates of feminist assertiveness courses. And the finale! Sockarooney! Hits you like a rocket. This technical virtuosity, charged with heart, kills any contemporary computer graphics stone dead. I can still hear the voices of my parent's generation expressing their disgust at the advent of the kitchen sink, and the general wallowing in self-pity, post WWII.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Flick
Just saw it yesterday. My wife and I laughed at the comedy, and marveled at the dance numbers. The singing was spectacular, and Barney (the "producer") stole the show. All in all, a great classicmovie/musical with a great plot and wonderful characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're in the Unney-May!
The plot of Gold Diggers of 1933 echoes the usual "let's put on a show" backstage musical theme of the 1930s. This time the story gravitates towards 3 struggling showgirls - Polly (Ruby Keeler), Carol (Joan Blondell) and Trixie (Aline MacMahon) - eking out a living during the depression. They get a break when a Broadway producer hires them for his new show, along with their songwriting neighbor Brad Roberts (Dick Powell), whom Polly favors. But all is not well. The producer (Ned Sparks) doesn't have the cha-ching to front the show. So Brad, who actually comes from a wealthy, blueblood family, puts up the money. Another complication arises when Brad's snobby upper-class family finds out about Brad's "slumming". His older brother Lawrence (Warren William) shows up and attempts to sever Brad's relationships with the play and with his gal Polly.

Before people lose their minds about the title of my review, just think about this: I genuinely wonder how the Native American community viewed this film when it was released.Sure, the stereotypes we see in STAY AWAY, JOE are now considered highly offensive--that Native Americans are irresponsible and alcoholic and such--but were they thrilled to be shown in a movie where they weren't getting shot off a horse by John Wayne?

4-0 out of 5 stars Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy with A Touch Of Spice
"Sweethearts", would have to be along with the classic "Maytime", my absolute favourite of all the MacDonald/Eddy Operetta teamings at MGM. Blessed with this unforgettable team at their absolute peak, a breathtaking technicolour production, and veteran director W.S. Van Dyke in fine form, "Sweethearts", make most memorable viewing for all lovers of this team's work. It had the added bonus of presenting this popular team in a slight variation on their usual screen persona's with the usual sweetness and light at times being joined by some amusing tart dialogue and situations that showed these two performers in a different and very agreeable manner. Both performers respond to this partial change of pace with delightfully fresh and energetic deliveries that where most welcome extensions on their previous work together.5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful romantic movie
Really enjoyed "Sweethearts". Mac and Eddy seemed to have a real romance going on in this particular movie. I loved seeing a movie of them in tech. color. Nelson didn't seem "wooden' in this movie at all, in fact thought he seemed to act very natural. They always seem to have a chemistry together that they didn't have in other films with other co-stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A VINTAGE VISUAL AND MUSICAL TREAT.
On the sixth anniversary of the enormously successful Broadway revival of Victor Herbert's operetta SWEETHEARTS, the show's stars Gwen Marlowe and Ernest Lane (Jeanette & Nelson, respectively) are still very much in love, but are tired of working constantly and yearn for a vacation away from the pressures of Broadway. Amusing complications follow. SWEETHEARTS was M-G-M's first three-strip Technicolor film, and the first colour film for either MacDonald or Eddy. Originally, when the filming began on 17 June 1938, it was partially shot in black & white. After two days, the footage was scrapped and the production was interrupted: filming began to commence in Technicolor. Why? There were huge production problems on NORTHWEST PASSAGE, which was to be the first full-length Technicolor feature for M-G-M. Originally Jose Iturbi was to make his acting debut in the film, however - for reasons unclear - he's not in the final released product. Iturbi made his film debut later, in 1944. Reviews of the day commended the use of colour in the film (Jeanette's beautiful golden-red hair was particularly praised) and Oliver Marsh & Allen Davey won a special AA for their Technicolor cinematography. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable to warp young minds....
I rented this film in my youth, and after I had watched it, left it downstairs next to the VCR.My younger sister popped it in, and I heard a mouthful from my older brother about how she shouldn't have been watching it, and I shouldn't have been watching it.Well, it's too late, I already did watch it, and my mind is now officially warped, hehehehe...My brother would freak out at other early favorites of mine, like Joe's Garage and Trout Mask Replica, but he was OK.As for this film, I love Ken Russell's work.He was on fire in the 1970's, and it's a shame that he hasn't really made a great film since Altered States. This film really has nothing to do with Franz Liszt (or Richard Wagner), but it's still a marvel to look at and to listen to.Great stuff. Now, how about a DVD?

4-0 out of 5 stars A disgrace Warner persist on VHS.
Indispensable, cult-status Ken Russel movie (not only for fans of The Who), that masterfully captures and subversively portrays on screen classical piano player/composer Frantz Liszt's personality: a legendary genious of a man whose life and times match that of a Rock star, 100 years before Rock was invented. If Glen Gould is the flamboyant 20th century classical piano player that rocked an establishment, just watch this movie to compare the original Master on his heyday.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ken Russell All The Way: Rocky Horror Picture Show Style
Ken Russell was at least providing mainstream audiences with a slice of music history- Franz Liszt, still regarded as the most extraordinary pianist ever born. He was not only prolific, but composed music that is extremely difficult to play- often feeling like the pianist must have more than ten fingers. Yes, during the 19th century, and in his youth, Liszt was a sex icon and had a following which can accurately be compared to that of a modern pop or rock artist. Yes, Franz Liszt had a fallig out with Richard Wagner, and yes Wagner was a big time German nationalist Aryan Supremacist and rotten apple (brilliant composer and love his music though). Russell is famous for suffusing his films with vulgarity, excessive flamboyance and out of this world cinematography. This one is a follow-up to the wildly successful rock opera Tommy and for a film, his most lavish and crazy spectacle a la Rocky Horror Picture Show. I didn't like it one bit but it is campy and will always have a following much like Rocky Horror Picture Show or Barbarella. Like thos movies, which are adult by the way and should never be watched by children- are best viewed late at night. What to watch for: a giant phallic monument which is worshipped in a bizarre ritual, a pipe organ that becomes a spaceship which ultimately saves the earth from a Frankenstein-Hitler monster, lots of musical numbers straight from rock opera/Broadway- Rocky Horror Picture Show type of stuff. Cameos include Ringo Starr as the Pope. It's mostly British humor (irreverant humor) but American audiences would eat it up just as easily.

Editorial Review

The show that first defined the Broadway musical has never come to thescreen intact, despite three tries. But take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganzaon its own terms, and it boggles the eyes. Not to mention the ears:The Kern-Hammerstein score includes some staples of the American songbook, such as "MakeBelieve," "After the Ball," and "Can't Help Lovin' That Man." Perhaps ariverboat gambler is almost too-easy casting for Howard Keel, and KathrynGrayson is overly twittery, which may be why the film's middle sags when theytake center stage. But any time the uncannily beautiful Ava Gardner smolders, alush tragic undertone takes over (even if the most interesting parts of herstory seem to take place offscreen). The physical production is extraordinary: the busy riverside setting, the outrageous color design, and best of all an "OldMan River" (sung by William Warfield) staged in the mists of morning. 4-0 out of 5 stars THE COMPLETE SHOW BOAT ON DVD
Someone needs to petition Warner Bros to release a DVD version of MGM's COMPLETE SHOW BOAT Laser Disc set, with the 1929, 1936 and 1951 versions, and the SHOW BOAT segment from TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY. If it ever happens, I hope they will be able to include all the LD audio bonuses from the 1951 recording sessions and still photo galleries of the three films as contained in the Laser Disc set. If George Feltenstein is lurking about reading these posts, it would be really nice to get some of the Criterion content from their release, if they're willing. Could we also please have as much of the 1929 Ziegfeld Prologue as possible? And while I don't usually recommend this type of thing, the alternate stereo mix of the last LD issue of the 1951 film (with the Ava Gardner vocal tracks in place) would be a dream come true!
4-0 out of 5 stars A vanished genre, a vanished time
Just about any movie featuring Howard Keel is likely to be among the very best of the late MGM musicals, and this version of the oft-adapted Broadway classic shows you why.He plays Gaylord Ravenal, "of the Tennessee Ravenals," a river gambler and dandy who loses his steamboat ticket in a game and wanders down to the riverside to try to con his way aboard Cap'n Andy Hawks's (Joe E. Brown) showboat "Cotton Blossom."There he meets, and instantly falls for, the Captain's daughter Magnolia (usually known as Nolie), a romantic and aspiring actress played by Kathryn Grayson, another frequent face in 1950's MGM films."We're full up, son," says Andy, but that soon changes. When Nolie's dear friend, leading lady Julie LaVerne (Ava Gardner), is betrayed to the sheriff by a jealous stevedore as "a miscegenation case...[part-]Negro woman married to a white man" (her beloved leading man Steven Baker (Robert Sterling)), Gay returns and is quickly snapped up, and Nolie--who, having grown up on the boat, naturally has an encyclopedic knowledge of its repertoire--is promoted to leading lady.Courting on stage in full view of audiences and Nolie's mother Parthenia (Agnes Moorehead), the couple's love deepens and they finally leave the boat to marry. But a gambler's life has no certainties, and when Gay's luck turns sour they quarrel.Nolie instantly regrets her words, but by the time she's ready to make up Gay has left her all the money he had and headed West.Still, their love endures, and at the end they are reunited and, as Cap'n Andy says, "It's Saturday fo'ever."
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT but...
This was a lavish, beautiful movie, butyou should also take a look at the 1936 version. Grayson and Keel are amazing together, and I loved the music. And if you like old musicals, I reccomend you watch Broadway Melody of 1936, a must see. It's like, my favorite MGM musical, and the musical number I 've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' is the BEST EVER! June Knight and Robert Taylor positively sparkle with romance and glamour in this number!! So do youself a favor, and watch Show Boat, both versions, and the Broadway Melody of 1936! ... Read more

I love this movie more than the disney versions you just have to let yourself go and enjoy it and dont be a stuck up old snob. movies and plays are ment for enjoyment not for people to pick at and destroy.

2-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment!
I must agree with a few others on here that I was disappointed with this version of 'Peter Pan'.

Editorial Review

Here's the alpha point of Elvis Presley's film career, the introduction of the raw-boned Mississippi boy into Hollywood pictures. E.P. takes a supporting role, and his entrance is delayed for nearly 20 minutes: kid brother to returning Civil War soldier Richard Egan, his character marries Egan's sweetheart Debra Paget when Egan is presumed dead. It's a chance for Elvis, his face still trembling with baby fat, to emote dramatically and finish tragically, both of which he does passably well. A serviceable Western, the film shamelessly shoehorns four Presley tunes into two sequences: E.P. crooning on mama's porch, and performing at a country fair (where starchy locals don't seem disturbed at the boy's gyrating hips and happy feet). All in all, a shrewd way to put a foot in Hollywood's doorway, and, of course, one of the last Presley movies to feel like a real film and not a vehicle for the King. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars B&W or color?
I bought mine and it's in black and white, not colorized as the store claims to be. So I would give all the stores selling this item as colorized version a zero star!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT IN COLOR (as advertised by Amazon!)
Now, WHAT a major disappointment! Look at the product description. It says: "Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dubbed, Special Edition, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC"
4-0 out of 5 stars Here'sa raw Presley appearing in his film debut
For anyone who enjoys Elvis Presley's earlier films, Love Me Tender is a must buy.Presley was not even the top star of this film, but by now, the other actors are long forgotten, and Elvis Presley is a household name. This post Civil war bittersweet romance does not offer an overwhelming plot, but I enjoyed the rough edges in the characterization of the caring, but short-tempered, young Texas farmer that Presley portrays, The film does not contain a host of Elvis' songs as do his later musicals, but his sensitive rendition of "Love Me Tender" is unforgettable. ... Editorial Review

This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in Every Sense of the Word!!
Dick Van Dyke brigns to life Caracticous Pott, an inventer whose inventions never seem to work out the way he wants. One thing I didn't realize for the longest time was the play on words in the creation of name. Take Caracticous Pott. He's a 'Crack-Pot' inventor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Memory of the Heart
There are just some movies that will always have a place in my heart and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of those.I still remember when I took my children to see the original and how thrilled they were to see a car that could fly and sail the seas.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Story - Simple Songs
I can't see how this movie can compete with all the newer, more flashy kids' movies that are available. However, the story is simple and sweet and so are the songs. I bought the movie because my autistic daughter likes simple musicals which feature kids and she enjoys listening to me sing the movie's songs which are so easy to learn. There are better choices for Disney movies from this era, like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "I'll go home with beautiful Jean"
In mid-18 th century, Highlands of Scotland, Rev. Mr. Forsythe decided that they village of Brigadoon was being unduly influences by witches and the outside world to he asked for a miracle that was granted and The village only appears one day once every hundred years.
4-0 out of 5 stars awesome
I love this movie, mainly because I was in the musical. I would have given it 5 stars but it is relatively different from the stage version. At least four songs aren't in the movie, Jeannie's Packing Up, My Mother's Wedding Day, The Real Love of My Life, and a great song called Come to Me Bend to Me. Almost Like Being In Love is in the Campbell house, and Waitin' for My Deary isn't. Tommy and Jeff aren't in Bonnie Jean and there's more to Meg Brockie than what they have in the movie. And the Campbell family is actually the McLaren family. If you just watch the movie and not the play, then it is awesome. It shows true love is out there, you just don't know where you'll find it. "And that the hardest part in life is giving up everything, but that's the only way you'll get everything." ... Read more
