I believe that the film is great but the vhs is terrible.
I ordered this film vhs hoping to enjoy it. I am very dissapointed as the film must be ruined. It made all sorts of noises that you could not either hear the arias or dialogue. I'm sorry that I received a damaged film.

pretty good
This movie was pretty good. I liked the witch.She is my favorite character because she is a pretty bad villain and I like villains. The parts of the movie that I liked best were the parts with the Wizard and the Munchkins.Once Dorothy and the scarecrow, lion and tin man reach Oz, it gets very interesting.You finally get to see the place they've been following the yellow brick road for.It's cool.I am six.

Great movie
I love Miguel Cervantes Story telling of Don Quiotxe De la Mancha. This has great songs. Rent is another one of my favorite musical turned movies but they are hardly alike. Rent is about the bohemian village, man of la mancha is about early spanish inquisition, but i do beilive they have a small relation.
Story was good, acting good, singing??? What singing?
Sorry, if one is casting for a MUSICAL movie, one should actually cast actors who can SING, not just actors who have big names. Sophia Loren couldn't carry a tune to save her life.
For Heaven and Dulciena!

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Today I REJOICE!I have been waiting for years to hear the news that "TAP" starring the GREATS Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines would be released on dvd.The date is August 29, 2006 so get ready!This movie is tap dance history! Great tap dancers old and young join forces to bring to the screen a celluloid history lesson for those who care to be educated.This is one of my favorite movies and while I haven't been able to watch it since Gregory's passing in August, 2003, I plan to celebrate on the release date.
Finally, TAP is coming on August 29, 2006!!
We can now rejoice!Gregory Hines in all his glory is finally being released and will be out on August 29, 2006.
Hard to describe the brilliance of this movie :-)
Wow.Apart from the fact that the late great Gregory Hines was one of the best tap dancers in the universe, this is an amazing movie.It has great music and the dancing is out of this world.

Wonderful as all Baryshnikov performances are.The popular Christmas ballet at its best!!!!

Nice Adaptation
I was impressed that they actually performed this to be video taped and took advantage of the video options like zoom.No one jumps like Baryshnikov.It's magical.

Nutcracker has a clear sexual theme to it
Rss22 is apparently disturbed by the sexual theme present in this version of the Nutcracker. However, it is essential to the ballet. In short, the Nutcracker is about a young girl becoming a woman and the sexual conflicts involved. Her dream is clearly sexual. She fights off the mice who represent her "dirty" sexual impulses and lascivious temptations including that of being "conquered" by the Mouse King. Finally, with the arrival of the Nutcracker Prince and his help, she is able to sublimate these impulses into a mature love for a protector who marries her (the Nutcracker prince) and who makes an "honest woman" of her. Proper versions of the ballet always have the Christmas tree swell and rise to gargantuan size, like the big phallis it represents. LOVE THIS!
This video to me is more of an instruction video than a workout video.They offer the movements step by step, and wonderfully describe each movement being executed.A lot of fun, but probably won't give you the "workout" that you may seek.But definitely very relaxing, might be great if used as a cool down.

A fun introduction to bellydance moves
This is the first bellydance video I have ever tried, and I enjoyed it.At the start of the workout, the twins jump right into upper body and neck stretches--these days, it's considered a no-no to stretch cold muscles without warming up first, but this DID feel good in my shoulders and neck.They then move on to introducing simple moves such as shoulder and hip "punches," starting the moves slowly and then gradually increasing the pace.In this manner, you learn to go from isolated movements to "shimmies" in your shoulders and hips.I thought some of the hip movements were particularly fun, although it took me a few tries to catch on at times.At the end of the workout, there are a few brief moves on the floor to work your inner thighs and provide a stretch, and then it's back to standing for a final stretch, bringing the workout in at a total of about 28 minutes.Although I found this video to be fun, I felt that it provided only a very light workout, mostly through the toning work in the upper body and perhaps a bit of cardio work during the faster movements towards the end.Therefore, the video would probably be best suited to beginning exercisers who need a gentle, low-impact workout or more experienced exercisers who enjoy doing a lighter workout now and then. ... Great Popping and Locking Routine
Most of the choreography on this DVD is lackluster and uninspiring. But there's a great--and very simple--popping/locking routine at the end. It's very different from everything else on this DVD. And there are some brief but helpful technique points at the end of the DVD.

OMGOSH!!!!
This video was great if you're a beginner. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, and my friends were still amazed by the dance moves I got down! You only have to watch it like 10 times, and it is SO WORTH IT!!!! But I think it's only for Beginners-Advanced Dancers.

Not for Beginners
This is a fun video to watch and it has a good message. But its NOT as easy as "1,2,3". I teach some of these same moves to my students and we have to take a great deal of time with each element of the more complex steps. This video is great if you can already dance this style and just want to learn some new moves. But it will be very dissapointing for someone who has never tried this before. I have it in DVD and that allows me to review and slow down the action much easier than you could with VHS. Still, it is challenging. Worth having, but not as a first instructional. Also, it is a bit dated by todays standards. But still fun. ... Read more

Schmaltz Fest
Unfortunately, this 30's schmaltz-fest seems pretty dated by now.I guess the Depression-era audiences needed some fluff A FANTASIA ON STRAUSS.
The highly fictionalized fantasia on the life of the great Johann Strauss. This 1938 film is a sacher torte of pleasure for anyone who loves his music and, in the lead, Fernand Gravet does a commendable job acting-wise. The very attractive - albeit large-boned - Polish soprano Miliza Korjus sings with a truly brilliant voice & she became the object of intense jealousy from M-G-M's reigning diva, Jeanette MacDonald! Because it was decided that there wasn't room for two Prima Donnas at the studio, the firmly established MacDonald was kept on the payroll while the European Korjus virtually went into American obscurity. Backgrounds for the film were shot in Chino, California. It is rumoured that portions of this underrated gem was indeed directed by Josef Von Sternberg.

Hollywood operetta at its best
Take the story of a man torn between two women, add the music of Johann Strauss and the scenery of 1840's Vienna and you have The Great Waltz, an irresistible cream puff of a movie.Miliza Korjus-rhymes with gorgeous and she is-portrays the fictional opera singer Carla Doner in a delicious performance that verges on May West camp, murmuring most of her lines through a perpetual full-toothed grin and waltzing herself giddy while singing absolutely impossible sounding obliggatoes to Strauss's walzes-never loosing a beat and never out of breath!Luise Rainer's innate sweetness and vulnerability are perfect for Poldi, Strauss's devoted wife.Watch her silent reaction when she realizes that the song she thought he wrote for her was actually intended for Madame Doner-incredible acting.On the other hand, Fernand Gravet, as Strauss, is unexceptional and a bit bland.Among the excellent supporting cast, Hugh Herbert as the befuddled music publisher and Curt Bois as the comic, but wise violinist are outstanding.The movie does require a temporary suspension of belief.It is full of improbabilities, including the all-female orchestra that performs Tales of the Vienna Woods in a biergarten--wearing evening gowns, Madam Doner's apparent ability to glance at a piece of music once and perform it word and note perfect (the citizens of Vienna take this one step further by singing along even though the waltzes in question have yet to be published!), and the most peculiar version of Die Fledermaus ever performed. If you are looking for historical accuracy or musical purity, this is not your movie, but if you want a delightful Hollywood operetta, you can't do much better than The Great Waltz. ... Read more

Great if the Sing-Along Works For You
I returned two of these discs thinking they were defective, before I realized that the sing-along feature just doesn't work on many DVD players.I was finally able to get it to work on my Humax Tivo DVD player/recorder, but when I had tried to play it on my Phillips and Toshiba machines, the songs would be skipped over completely during movie playback, and random lines of the songs were skipped during playback of specific sing-along tracks.Also, no lyrics would show up at all.I was very bummed since this was the only reason I purchased this new edition.

Grease is still the word
All I have to say is finally!!! Finally they have a collecter's edition of Grease with bonus features. I have been waiting years for an edition like this. If you're a lover of Grease buy this DVD!

Simon Kieth's popular comic book was adapted for television in this multipart animated series first broadcast on MTV. A little confusing, the series--which concerns a kind of hulking superhero and his attachment to a female therapist and her teenage client--is actually mesmerizing and surprisingly touching. The writing is unusually sophisticated, and Kieth's ability to create complex female characters and provide their incisive dialogue should be the envy of any male scribe. Is this all of "The Maxx" ?
I recently found my VHS tape of this series & wondered if there was a DVD version available, no such luck! This was perhaps the best thing to come from MTV in the 90's, only to disappear into obscurity.

This is not a review per se (the series is great) but I wanted to let those interested know that all the episodes- unedited- can be seen at youtube.com. Until the series is released unabridged on DVD , which seems unlikely, that's the only way I know of to see it in its original form.

I hope The Maxx gets released on DVD.
I don't have this retail version of the show, but I do have the original episodes that I recorded from MTV Oddities in 1995.I think the show and the original comic book are excellent!I pulled them out and watched them for the first time in over 5 years.I wish there was some way to get this released on DVD. ... When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." Legendary musical!
Can Can was the film that launched to overseas stages to Shirley Mac Laine one of the ten American actresses ever born. Based in the famous musical of Cole Porter of 1890s , this lackluster version involves to Frank Sinatra as the lawyer who will defend the rights of Miss Mac Laine to perform the daring dance in her nightclub. But the presence of the giants of the French song - Maurice Chevalier - and Louis Jordan makes of this musical a stand out musical still reminded after all these years.
DVD Please
I currently own this VHS version.But I would buy the DVD in a heartbeat if it were available.And of course wide screen please.With commentary if possible.This movie and Gigi are both among my favorites.

When will we see Can-Can restored on DVD
I have to say that I rmember seeing Can-Can in its origional roadshow presentation in Los Angeles in my younger days. It was a great time at the movies, and I remember the scope of the widescreen and all those Can-Can dancers. I hope that we will soon see a DVD with the fully restored format in Letterbox, With Ovature and Intermission etc. While not the best musical every filmed I remember it fondly and would like to see a DVD that presents this move as it should be seen. As pure spectacle, a feast for the eyes.....
Like Mann's other well-known feature, "Fall of the Roman Empire," El Cid has a lot going for it: breathtaking Spanish scenery and fabulously authentic set pieces, two very competent and attractive leads with Heston and Loren, and an interesting protagonist whose story is steeped more in myth than reality.
A Crime
It is criminal that this title has not had an American release.The junk that gets released, and this classic just sits.One part action, one part romance make this is a sweeping epic.The battle scenes, the cinematography, the acting--all top notch.Fans of Braveheart, Ben Hur, Spartacus, etc.this is a film for you.

Honor or Love? A tough question for Don Rodrigo!
"El Cid" (1961) was undoubtedly a great box office success and deservedly. In a time that had seen a decade of great epic movies this was a very relevant one.
