5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for children to music appreciation!
My 5 yo loves classical music, and I found these videos at my library. He loves them! I appreciate how Marsalis uses classical music to help us understand jazz, which I like but never really "appreciated." I'm sure we'll borrow them more as he ages and can comprehend more and more of the content!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music by one of its greatest lovers
Wynton Marsalis, one of the greatest musicians of his generation, has always been involved with teaching music. This video is a real must for those who love music - not only jazz, Marsalis' speciality, but all kindsof music. The fourth part, "Tackling the Monster" (in whichMarsalis shows his 12-step method of practicing music), is my favorite one.Inspiring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait...
This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of THE KING AND I is a must for all fans of the timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece.Widowed English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) travels to Siam after she is offered a position to tutor the children of the King (Yul Brynner).Once in Siam, Anna and the King clash on matters of politics, ethics and the heart...two very different individuals who manage to still find the very best in each other. This magical movie has never looked or sounded better, in a new DVD remaster.Audio commentary for the film is provided by Michael Portantiere and Richard Barrios.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful if nothing else
If you've never seen this film adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein's broadway hit 'The King & I'...I suggest you do.While it's far from perfect, and it's not even the best musical to grace the big screen, 'The King & I' packs a whallop of a punch and sports some great acting and beautiful sets that will do nothing short of take your breath away. The plot is simple.A widow and her son move to Siam to help teach the Kings children and while there they all take turns learning from one another. The woman, Anna (Deborah Kerr) is a very independant mother who butts heads with the very independant King (Yul Brynner). As she demands the house he promised her as well as continues to teach and fall in love with the children on Siam, Anna slowly begins to understand the way of life she at first refused to understand. The film comes down to dramatic conclusion that tests their friendship and at the same time affirms their silent love for one another. The film soars with it's beautiful story of two unlikly friends who slowly, and subtly fall in love, and soars even higher when you get a glimpse of the fantastic stage sets (which are even richer on the stage which I just had the privilage of seeing last night with Lou Diamond Phillips who was outstanding!).The singing is decent, Kerr proving she has the best chops, but it's the story that steals the show.Yes this is a musical, but strip that away and you still have an engrossing love story that is above average.I'd recommend this to anyone, a great family film that everyone will enjoy. The 'Uncle Toms Cabin' presentation done in Siamese style is the most impressive part of the film and the stage performance and is sure to make this movie a memerable experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Adaptation of Maeterlinck's Classic Play
Curly Shirley Temple lends her dimpled, pouty-mouthed winsomeness to the tale of a young girl and her brother(Johnny Russell)who live in Austria/Bavaria during the Napoleanic Wars.
4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful movie
I have enjoyed this movie for many years. Yes Shirley plays a spoiled kid, and she doesn't sing or dance, but that does not take away from the beauty of the story. I would highly recommend this movie for kids and adults alike, of course adults with a child like heart will enjoy more. War breaks out daddy is drafted

5-0 out of 5 stars SO much fun!
I love ALL the Neena and Veena videos, but this one is one of my favorites. The movements are easy to do and you don't think you've got a great workout going because it doesn't LOOK or feel like you're doing much, and then before you know if you're sweating and tired and it feels great. You do a lot of different moves so it doesn't even feel like you're spending 30 minutes working out.I love, as I said, these vidoes and this combined with the fat burning are better than anything for losing weight and toning up.I used to run five miles every day and I SWEAR these workouts are way better than that and WAY more fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice workout, not for beginner bellydancers
First of all, let me say that this is not for someone who has never experienced bellydancing. They don't explain the moves, I'm guessing that they expect that you've already done their Basic Moves tape. The voiceover says "Now well do this" and they go right into it.No slowing it down. This is a cardio oriented workout, and they don't slow down the pace at all.I also want to mention that while it is a decent arms and abs workout, the part of my body that got the most attention was my calves.Just let me say this.I am a dancer.I have been since I was about 6.I have fairly developed calf muscles. After this workout, honestly, if I didn't know better, I'd say I had never used those muscles before in my life.Wow.The set is amazing, and Neena and Veena are fairly easy to follow. If you're prepared for a serious lower leg workout, this tape is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to Workout but NOT for learning Belly Dancing
i got this tape from a friend and it doe makes you sweat and it works your arms a lot. The tummy too but i felt my arms more. Maybe cuz i already have abs. Anyway this is not for learning belly dancing whille working out, its for a workout only.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Caped Prima Donna, but he Loved Music, and it Shows!
Using interviews with his son and daughters, his brother, the writers, choreographers, and conductors he worked with, and many of his friends, and clips of his rehearsals and performances, we see the life of a very talented, but troubled genius.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute BERNSTEIN!
It has been said many times that music is the universal language. While the truth of this statement is self-evident, occasionally even universal languages require translators. For that, great men such as Leonard Bernstein have stepped to the fore to assist the rest of us in understanding what is perhaps man's single greatest art form.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate this movie 10 stars!
Naughty Marietta, winning the Oscar for Best Sound Recording in 1935, is the crown jewel of the Eddy/MacDonald films, holding a special place in anyone's heart that has ever had the pleasure of seeing it. It is esteemed as one of the best-loved operettas of all time, and that's saying a lot about this film. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Movie!
This was my first 'old' movie and I thought that it was certianly one of the best ones I have seen. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy make the perfect team in this film as they combine their superb talent of singing and comedy. The music in 'Naughty Marietta' is beautiful. Also, the plot is interesting and even a little bit funny.I would definatley reccomend this to anyone, either young or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect
One of the two greatest "operetta" films (MAYTIME being THE greatest) ever made.Jeanette - and the entire production - is radiant and, of course, the singing is both fun and magnificent at the same time, culminating in that most glorious moment at the Governor's ball.Simply perfect. ... Read more

The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still An Enriching Experience
They may have cut the overture and intermission, etc., but what was restored in the directors cut lengthens the original. And I don't really feel the previously edited songs enhance the experience. Just like my dislike of "Apocalypse Now Redux." A poor addition of far inferior scenes in my opinion. Fortunately, "1776" stills remains a patriotic and historical delight. Almost like watching a stage production, another example of how film adaptations done right, can add to the limitations of stage scenery. Should be required viewing for school children of all ages.

2-0 out of 5 stars They should call it 1775
What a disappointment, and one for which the DVD manufacturer is stupidly responsible. Despite discovering the original negative and beautifully restoring the original version of this vastly entertaining film (after years of us fans settling for a battered workprint of the deleted footage on the laserdisc), Sony cut off the overture, intermission, and recessional music. While, on one hand, they brought director Peter H. Hunt and screenwriter Peter Stone (now, alas, deceased) into the booth to record a commentary track in which Hunt admits to removing some of the music, the overall effect is still to cheapen the viewing experience. So, yes, buy this puppy for its quality and educational value, but get prepared for a shortfall in showmanship. Next, class, we shall discuss the fact that there is still a scene missing from the restored "Lawrence of Arabia"...

This quintessential Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musical has all the kinetic energy and beaming goofiness that made their films together (nine in all) so popular--and so easy to lampoon. The son of a vaudeville performer (Charles Winninger), Rooney decides to put on his own show (in a barn!) to save his family's fortune, his town, his peers, and, gosh darn it, even the American way of life. The star luster generated by Garland matches the explosive energy of Rooney's performance. Director Busby Berkeley's big production numbers are a sight to behold, from a march through town for the title number to an embarrassingly dated minstrel show routine. The movie was made the same year as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes in Arms
Great old movie, good watching for the times we live in. A lot of good music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mickey and Judy!
This classic film stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland as teenagers living in Seaport, Long Island, NY just before the Great Depression struck. Vaudeville is dying; thus Rooney's family business as show biz perfomers is very much at stake. When the older folks leave Seaport to put on a show and prove to the world that Vaudeville is not dead yet; they leave the younger folks behind. What to do? Put on a show! Rooney's character trys to woo some fading child star so she can put up the money for the show and bumps Garland from the lead. She inevitably retakes the lead in the show and everything ends happily ever after when out of nowhere some hot-shot producer likes what he saw in the barn show scene. (By the way, one cautionary note: the barn show scene includes a minstrel show; although typical of that era it is not only dated but potentially ofensive to some viewers.) The viewer also gets an extra treat: Margaret Hamilton has a small role as the nasty old lady who runs welfare in the town and wants to send the kids off to a vocational school. All in all, this really is a very goood movie and great fun to watch. I would add that this is an obvious must-have for any Garland or Rooney fan. A BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Essential for Rooney-Garland Fans
In the 1939 Mickey Rooney was among the top box office draws in the world.Judy Garland had appeared as a supporting player in two Rooney films, and the two had significant chemistry--more over, Garland had just completed photography for THE WIZARD OF OZ--a film that MGM rightly expected would launch her to international stardom. The time was right to costar the two, and MGM did it with BABES IN ARMS.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the wait
This brand new edition of SOUTH PACIFIC is a must for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.Based on characters and segments from James Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific", the story takes place on the islands during the tail-end of World War II.A pretty young nurse from Arkansas, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor), falls in love with a wealthy French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi).Their relationship is tested when she discovers that he fathered two children with a now-dead Polynesian wife, and that he is wanted for the murder of a man in France. As Nellie confronts her own fears and prejudices, the handsome Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) falls helplessly in love with Bali Ha'i island beauty Liat (France Nuyen).Filling out the comedy in the tale are Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall), the wheeler-dealer with a heart of pure gold; and Luther Billis (Ray Walston), the tattooed leader of the beach-bound troops.
1-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled Terrible Pacific.
Film quality wss poor as was the editing.Would return if I could.Edited out most of Brazzis singing which is highlight of show. We had way too much of Mitzi Gaynor.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAIT FOR THE 2 DISCS EDITION. IT IS REALLY A MASTERPICE
Thank's God I live in Europe (Portugal)and we can buy here the fantastic 2 disc version of South Pacific remasterd. It is a fantastic DVD with a quality never surpassed by any other motion picture published in DVD. The early version like Oklahoma was not very good but...we have waited and now we have the prize. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Sullivan's Oscar Moment
I don't know why Ed Sullivan didn't get more movie roles after his performance in The Singing Nun.Astonishing, simply astonishing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, fine cast.
Based on a true story, The Singing Nun tells of a nun, Debbie Reynolds, who walks a fine line between joyous praise through music and vain self-glorification as her popular songs become commercially successful. The story's pretty simple as she rises to fame, with a profound twist that gives her a wake-up call. There's a terrific supporting cast, but the main appeal is the music, my favorite being the song "Dominique," which she performs on the Ed Sullivan show (apparently based on a true-life event, with Ed Sullivan appearing in the movie to recreate it).Fortunately this melody is used extensively in the films score making for very pleasant viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Movie....

2-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking??
Okay, I got this movie at the library. Now everybody told it was horrible, but I had to see it myself. I've only just flicked through a couple of the scenes, but what I have seen is enough. First of all, most of the sets that I've seen are AWFUL! For example, watch the "Jacob and Sons/Joseph's Dreams" scene. It looks like it was a computer graphic! Is it? Why? Also, the costumes! Why is the narrator in sneakers and what's with her shirt? You really have to see it to believe it. She can't really sing, either. The kids look so gray and drab! They could have done a much better job with this production, as it was such an important milestone in the partnership of ALW and TR.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie
I love this movie. It's not quite a stage version, but not a movie version. It's a little of both.Donny Osmond is a great Joseph and Maria Friedman is a great Narrator. The rest of the cast is the best they can be.Everyone sings well, dances well, and acts really well. It's cute, funny, sad, and heartbreaking. If you like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice this one is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great movie and should be on dvd
I agree with the other reviewers this is a great movie and deserves to be on dvd, it has a good story, good music,GREAT dancing from Liza, great cast I just love Julie Walters in this movie, it is a feel good movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Dance Films Ever
Viewing Stepping Out with my daughter, who is a dancer, has become a wonderful and regular pastime in our house. Liza Minelli is phenomenal in this film whether singing, acting, or dancing. Even though the film is Liza's vehicle, the superb cast of dancing actors holds its own against her talent. Each character reminds us of someone we know. Each character becomes a beloved friend as the plot develops. I'm going to write to Paramount and ask that it be made into a DVD. This lovely film deserves to be preserved for my daughter's daughters! Engaging, funny, dramatic, and full of music, this film is a must-see for fans of all musical theater

I am a former sing leader from Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, NY. I ran sing for the 4 years I was there from 1988-1992. This movie is a great movie and doesnt do it justice. The hard work of hours and hours during school, after school, weekends. But in the end it was well worth it. I can watch this movie for years and years to come and just remember..I miss my highschool years and the best part of my highschool years was SING. When this movie was filmed they filmed some of it in my school in New Utrect High School. Before the movie was out, they invited us to a special screening where I met Peter Dobson and some of the writers and Lorraine Bracco. I have autographs and they autographed my soundtrack too. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to note...
It's symptomatic of middle-age, I suppose, to reflect warmly on "the good old days", and even though I never wanted to fall into that syndrome, seeing "Help" has done exactly that for me. I was a Freshman in college when the movie was released, and so it was a movie for the millions of Boomers like me, in that bizarre, wonderful time that was the mid-1960's in America.
5-0 out of 5 stars YAY!! :D
This was the best movie that the beatles did it was funny and had a bit more of a plot this time. 'in the weeks that followed five more attemts were made to steal the ring.' Quite frankly my favorite attemt was number four he,he. But in 'another girl' we can only wish that Paul would wear that tshirt more often. and my stepsister finally realized that there are more rasons to like the beatles than their music. That is before John turned into mountain man\amish terrorist anyway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Please restore "Help!" for DVD
Though not the landmark that "A Hard Day's Night" was, this film is still a lot of fun, and for current and future generations shows how the Beatles looked and behaved in 1965, in full color (in fact, the color cinematography is striking throughout--should have been nominated for an Oscar).

1-0 out of 5 stars Odd
The question is are you a zappa fan? I'm not a huge Zappa fan but I like a couple of his songs. If you aren't a big fan then don't bother.
3-0 out of 5 stars Only For The Fans Who Like Flo & Eddie Too..... Average Movie
*** Warning to Zappa Fans - FZ does not sing or speak at all in this movie...he leaves that up to Flo & Eddie.
