5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
Wonderful music, Incredibly talented musicians playing beautifully, and yet still having fun as they played, a conductor who puts down his baton to play a violin version of battling banjos with the lead violinist, Yanni offering a few words of his life philosophy. This is a definite 5.Kim Abbey
3-0 out of 5 stars AV Suffers
I have owned and loved the cd for a while now, so I decided to try the dvd to get it in DD5.1.I consider myself really into audio, I have 3 Boston Acoustics VR3s across the front, Ascend Acoustics 340s for surrounds, and custom built subwoofers - all calibrated.Long story short, this dvd just reaffirmed to me why I stick to 2 channel stereo for my music listening.I find that much of the clarity, detail, and impact present on the cd just isn't here on the dvd.Clearly more work was put into mastering the cd.As another member stated, they really cooked the left surround channel on this disc, I had to turn it down quite a bit. Also, the video is full frame and pretty soft, but I wasn't expecting much on the video side to begin with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
Wow!!! The only word that comes to my mind when I think about this concert. Its simply amazing. If you are trying to refine your musical taste, then here is the music which you should listen and watch. Violin, Cello,Bass, Percussion, Drums, all sorts of Wind instruments, synthesizer, Grand Piano, harpischord and what else would you need for an orchestra. I think nothing else. This music will elate your mind. Also listen to Yanni's words, he has some philosophical lessons for you. This is and will remain Yanni's best ever live concert. No doubt many people have called it a masterpiece. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Avoid the CD!
OK, I figure if you're looking at this CD, you're a Laurie Anderson fan and can recall at least twice you've seen her great concert movie, likely at a midnight showing back in the 80's.Well, if you're that person, avoid the utter heartbreak which is this CD.I counted 18 tracks from my old VHS copy of this concert, while only 8 made it to the CD.The banter between tracks is omitted entirely. The tracks are out of order (OK, small nitpick), and it's certainly not worth the effort.I'm sorry, Laurie, but Warner scr-wed you hard on this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATS
What an utterly charming and delightful film! This is Laurie Anderson at her peak. At this time, her emerging visions in her music, her performance art, and her perspective on pop culture all came together to form a Laurie-world that is engrossing, rich, quirky, and bound to make you smile. I think that OUR world has lost something since then. It is hard to imagine "Home of the Brave" being made in todays jaded, degraded, and "extreme" culture. I also love this film because it happened in an era when new musics were emerging from grass roots sources, and the record companies had to adapt themselves to these new movements. That may have been the last time that such a thing will happen in this manufactured-to-sell musical environment. This film NEEDS to go to DVD, as it is one of the five essential concert films of this wonderful time in music. The others are:
3-0 out of 5 stars One of Anderson's best
Mister Heartbreak is Laurie Anderson'e best release, closely followed by Home of the Brave , and then Big Science. On HOTB it is Late Show's blend of rhythm, synth and sax which really shines, though Language is a Virus is very good- with very funny poke at 'tv people'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hilarious history of the Stones
If you want a rollicking good time with the Stones, this is your best bet. Fantastic footage of early concerts where the crowds go absolutely wild and girls leap on-stage. Lots of interviews, observations from the bad boys about their drug busts and crazy lives. Plus some whole songs, not just excerpts. No phony "analysis" from outsiders. This is a great way to spend your evening. When's the DVD out?

4-0 out of 5 stars Already dated, yet necessary
This documentary was made in 1989, just as the Stones were reemerging from squabbling to become the moneyhoarding juggernaut they'llprobably still be after their grandchildren are dead. Talking head clips are interspersed with news footage, the film gaining momentum as the band mature from whiteboy blues copyists to Dark Gods of Rock. '89-era Jagger bears a terrible haircut, as do suprisingly many of his late sixties Ed Sullivan appearances, but his recollections are mildly candid and thoughtful, which for prim Mick is like the Ricky Lake show.Keith, from meeting Muddy Waters to stealing Brian Jones' girlfriend, offers wonderful barroom frankness, Charlie is still the modern Buster Keaton of drummers (look for his 'hanging out' comment near the end), while Bill Wyman is luckily caught before his retirement two years later. Coverage of the eighties runs too long and is superfluous anyway since the band was running on fumes by then, but you'll want to watch and rewatch the section from 1968-'72,as exciting as the albums they were then making, when not even a soulless beast like Led Zepplin could prevent them from being 'the world's greatest rock n'roll band.' ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
Our kid'a love it! Mr Wynton Marsalis is the bomb! Our middle school just isn't teaching this, and as the only really original music from the USA I feel jazz is pretty important! You won't be sorry! In fact the whole family will enjoy this fine box set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis On Music is an instant classic.
Marsalis on Music is the young people's series for our time, hosted by Wynton Marsalis, the most popular and acclaimed jazz musician of his generation anddistinguished classical performer as well.Withhelp from his jazz band and students from the Tanglewood Music Center, led by Seiji Ozawa, Wynton puts a fresh spin on music appreciation. His inspired instruction, backed by superb performances and exciting animated graphics, not only teaches the fundamentals of music, but makes learning fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis on Music, from a music teacher's perspective
This video series is certainly not a substitute for a sound music education, and does not promote itself as such.It focuses on the elementsof jazz and jazz theory, a component that is lacking or inadequate in mostof the popular music curriculums for the elementary and junior high school. I like this particular series for several reasons. First, it is somethingI would leave a substitute teacher because the students can watch it andthere is plenty of room for discussion and practice later on.Second,as asuccessful African-American musician, he is a good role model for youngmusicians. I work with at-risk students, and have found that it isimportant to present them with some positive, successful role models thatare culturally diverse. Finally, the presentation is attention grabbing.Marsalis has a way of communicating clearly in this series. He explainsmusical concepts from the simplest to some that are fairly complex in a waythat is direct. There is a lot of basic music theory embedded in thisseries. Plus, it's more fun than lecturing, and kids seem to enjoy it as achange of pace. It's not a substitute for good teaching, but it cansupplement and round out a good music education program. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I didn't know that Linus had a brother named Rerun???
I first saw this and I have to say that it doesn't have the Charles Shultz touch to it, but it will be another Charlie Brown classic. It shocked me to learn that Linus had a brother named Rerun???You learn something new every day.Even thou others were rating this very low, this is better than some of the other cartoon garbage that is on TV for children these days.

2-0 out of 5 stars This isn't your traditional Peanuts special
Each year, we anxiously await the airing of "A Charlie Brown Christmas".That's one of our holiday highlights.Last year, we were curious about the new "I Want a Dog for Christmas" and tried to sit through it.We made it about halfway through, and couldn't stand to watch the rest.Rerun getting sent to the office for sexual harassment??C'mon, give me a break. It's too bad that the writers of the new piece felt that they had to slide in such a PC agenda.Just watch the original instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
Saw this on ABC.My daughter loves the Charlie Brown specials just as I did, and still do.This one is a newer production, 2003, and it falls way short of the originals. This one is overly PC and lacks the charm of the original. My daughter lost interest almost instantly.I lost interest just as quickly. My reaction 5 minutes into the show was, "What is this crap?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond At His Dynamic Best In 1976 Live In Concert
This VHS is a wonderful treat. This is a truly great live concert video. You will never see Neil Diamond sing like this again as he did in 1976 at his prime. In this landmark performance the songs are true to their original melodies and so exciting. The program runs for a wonderful 52 minutes. The music is timeless. The songs include:
3-0 out of 5 stars Very good but......................
I grew up listening to Neil Diamond. I used to have the Double LP of this concert. To be honest, I was a little disapointed with this viedo. It isn't because of the performence, Neil diamond himself is always great. It's cool seeing him in a concert that was filmed nack when I was 12 years old.5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond at his Dynamic Best!!!
This performance by Neil Diamond is a perfect example of his dynamic, warm, personable on-stage presence. It reflects his ability to relate to and captivate his audience with talent and charisma. Every true Diamond fan should have this video, (along with the CD) in their collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars who else but Madonna....
I can't imagine anyone but Madonna in this role. Many people criticize her acting ("such a drama queen," "overestimates her abilities," blah blah blah), but I thought she was pretty good in this one. Besides, her singing and dancing made up for anything else that could be wrong, in my opinion. Her voice is so distinctive, so strong, so closely fitting to emotions that the songs should envoke.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly awful!!!!!!!
this movie is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. if i could have given it less than a one, i would have!!!!this movie is so horrific that i tried to watch it 3 times, but fell asleep every time.this is the first movie that has actualy put me to sleep because it was so boring!!!!!!!!!!!!! Madonna did a FABULOUS job, but aside from that, this movie sucked.

2-0 out of 5 stars They changed the lyrics
As someone who saw the original touring Evita in Austin during the 1980's, and practically memorized the original Broadway cast recording, I found this presentation of the work rather jarring and disappointing. Many of the lyrics have been changed or sanitized, perhaps to satisfy the censors in Argentina so the film could be shot there. The complete elimination of Peron's last mistress before Evita, and the transfer of her agonized lament "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" to Madonna, was a poor decision and changes the whole concept of that song.Overall, the orchestral arrangements have too "pop" a flavour, and disgard the lush original score. If you want to get a REAL feel for the impact of "Evita", get the original recording with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Episodes
I am a big fan of Spongebob. I do not have this dvd, but I can quote almost every episode on this dvd. So I will only talk about the episodes. These are some great episodes, though they do not all tie into Christmas or even snow. My favorite on the dvd would have to be "Survival of the Idiots", with "Snowball Effect" in a close second. Here are my ratings of the episodes in order from best to worst:

Christmas Who? (Double-length Episode!)- Great for this set. Duh.

5-0 out of 5 stars God is in the TV, but where is he now?
God is in the T.V. is a collection of all Marilyn Manson's music videos from "Get Your Gunn" (1994) up to "Coma White" of Mechanical Animal's fame. The music videos play in reverse chronological order.
5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Manson ~ God Is In the T.V.
This was a very good video. You get to see 13 of Manson's music videos, including Rock Is Dead, The Dope Show, and Sweet Dreams. Also, there's an additional hour of concert & backstage footage that some viewers might find very offensive, due to the explicit material; Twiggy & John 5 giving Manson oral sex on stage, Manson ripping pages out of a bible, the band setting stuff on fire (American flags, the stage set & instruments), and more. If you love to be shocked, then check out this video. Also check out two other great Manson videos: Dead To the World & Guns, God, and Government World Tour.
5-0 out of 5 stars if you like manson you need this video.
long story short it contains all his music videos from portrait of an american family up till mechanical animals.now every Manson fan has seen all the videos from antichrist superstar and mechanical animals but if you are a younger Manson fan chances are you've never seen the video for dope hat, which was made while Manson was in his "Willy Wonka" phase and is a very good parody of the boat ride from the movie, and chances are you've never seen the videos for lunchbox, get your gunn, man that you fear which is a poignant video wherein manson is chosen (in what seems to me to be a take off on shirley jacksons short story the lottery) to be stoned to death, cryptorchid, or any of the less popular antichrist videos as well as the pre antichrist superstar vids.so especially if you're a younger manson fan looking to experience the old videos or just if you're a manson fan in general this video is a must have. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I love Kim but the video needs to be remastered
I love Sister Kim.She is my favorite female gospel vocalist of all time.I really enjoyed her on the video. She ushered in the spirit of God through an anointed vocal sermon. Now on the other hand.I could not hear the music well and when I did hear it...it was sounding pretty bad on certain songs.Maurice Fitzgerald (bassist) and Calvin Rogers (drummer) were awesome.I can't say much about the lead keyboardist. It looked as if he had taken some laced prozac before the show.He was off-key and was jumping around like puffy had just entered the building.Seeing his butt wagging back and forth throughout the whole video was not enticing either!Remaster and put it on dvd!!It will be all good.

5-0 out of 5 stars She is Wonderful!!!
Kim Burrell is a great singer, artist and christian. She can riff out of this world. My favorite songs is Everywhere you go. I would like to suggest that she, Karen-Clark Sheard, LaShun Pace and Kelly Price come up with an album. Kim has her own style that has been imitated in all types of music. As I said she is just wonderful and if you also like her riffs or riffing in general then I would suggest that you buy her CD's and Karen-Clark's. God Bless!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Well it's live
I'm sorry I have to write this report, since I always have a burning desire and love to support good christian efforts in evolving gospel music. But this VHS has been a great disappointment to me. I wouldn't recomment to buy this unless you are a great Kim Burrell fan. I feel the music and singing needs grounding - espeacially in the first half. The singing is way too much out of tune, which I wouldn't matter if I felt a strong spirit in it. In addition she phrases all the time which is giving me a konstant feeling of stress so focusing on the lyrics seems impossible. Also the sound mix is very bad, so in general I must say: Yes, it's live indeed. Again I'm sorry to write this because it's the first time I've ever had a bad experience with a live video, and I know their intentions of making the protject must be good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage film, classic crue, all party!!!
This video was issued in 1986, right after their theatre of pain album was put out, and let me tell you, it's crue in their prime.Vince, Nikki, Tommy, and Mick are 80's metal life to the extreme, driving Coravettes, riding in limo's with spa's, and of course Girls Girls Girls.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Piece of Crue History
If you are a big fan of the Crue and are wondering if you want this tape - my advice is go for it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Motley Crue Uncensored
The four band members are followed around for a mock fly-on-the-wall style documentary that exposes (badly rehearsed) scenes such as Mick being pulled over for speeding, Tommy riding up and down the strip and Vince being 'woken' by the camera crew, takes us out to his limo (with on-call driver asleep in the back!) where a couple of tonights laydeez wow passers by with their boobage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant look at the growth of a band
This video shows the growth and depth of The Cure. The range of videos from their early shows to their late 80's peak of popularity is spectacular. My favourite video has to be "The Love Cats" which is the first Cure song I ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a god and he likes me

A phenomenal blend of sound and images. It gives us more of an insight into the band and gives us a glimpse of their outrageous senses of humour. 5-0 out of 5 stars the magician of chelsea
I have to admit being almost completely unobjective where Mark Knopfler is concerned, and it's comforting to know that I'm not alone - I'm sure he could raise his own army if he was so inclined - so it will come as no surprise that I was glued to the set watching this performance. It so happened that the first edition with which I came into contact was the VHS copy of this concert; unwittingly, I picked the item with superior content (upon reading reviews of the DVD edition with the idea of upgrading, it became apparent that the DVD is, instead, a step backward; it does not contain essential pieces, like Sultans of Swing - perhaps this omission will be remedied if there is another pressing of the DVD). I am pleased to note that Mark Knopfler never fails to impress, any time I have seen him in any capacity; he works well with the musicians he convenes for his concerts, and over nearly thirty years has quietly amassed appearances with such a diverse assortment of performers and projects, nothing he could do would seem off. This concert - how great would it have been to be in that cosy little hall and witness it - seems to have been a promotion for "Golden Heart" (which came out that year) and I may have to go back and revise my review of that album - I was slightly harsh on it, although I still consider it a true first effort - as the biggest part of the concert on the VHS is from that album, and is VERY good. There are a LOT of musicians on stage - three keyboardists, four guitarists (besides Mark), a string quartet, four Irish musicians - it's amazing to me, with all those musicians in that small space, that nobody got in anybody else's way, but that's just how well this group worked together. Mark Knopfler possesses the magic to get the best out of everybody he collects to assist him, and make it look effortless. There were a lot of smiles all around as well - both on stage and in the audience. A relaxed, cohesive performance,well-balanced between new and old material (even though this was primarily about Mark's re-entry into the musical bullpen with "Golden Heart", there are about an equal amount of pieces from older works, going all the way back to the beginning and touching on mid- and late-Dire Straits and some of his movie scores as well). I had a great time watching this and can tell it will be played a lot. I'm planning to introduce my nephew to it before long - there's a whole new generation out there to enchant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest singer, songwriters, guitarists of all time.If you're a fan, you must have this VHS concert.Don't buy the DVD version, since it doesn't have Sultans of Swing on it.If you have ever heard Mark live, you know what I mean.Growing up with classic rock, I got to the point that I couldn't even listen to Sultans of Swing on the radio. But his live versions of the song are absolutely genius.Only drawback is the VHS format in an era of DVD's, but fight through it to enjoy a great concert in an intimate setting in London.Camera shots and the rest of his band couldn't be better.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Stars for the "Sultan"
A great smal venue with an eclectic group of backup musicians from Irish pipes to strings to Sonny Landreth's haunting slide makes this one of Knopfler's strong "personal" albums.I saw one critique the lack of his trademark red Fender in place of a lesser unknown guitar.Happens to be a Paul Suhr, one of the best customs made and one of Mark's favorites although he uses a Gibson mostly on these tracks.Voice a little weak and slighly flat on "Imelda" which is a shame as this is one of his best tongue in cheek social commentaries.Use of string accompaniement is great. "Cal" as usual is a tear jearker.I'd buy and cherish any DVD, CD or VHS that has "Sultans" on it.The up close camera work on his left hand on this tape makes you just stare at your own hand in wonderment and awe.Truly worth the bucks expecially to see Mark's new expensive stage "rags"! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars BBBOOOORRRRING!!
My 8th graders hated it.As an art teacher I support what the producers are trying to do, however, this video has a weak script, uninspired performances and is simply boring. The basic dramatic conflict of the story is too internalizedfor middle school and too childish for high school. The performances are so underplayed and amateur-ish that there's nothing to hold students' attention. There are really very few insights into Homer the man, the artist, his techniques or his life beyond the fact that he was an illustrator during the Civil War. Save your money for a documentary video on Homer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weaving A Story And Art
Super family video that is interesting, historically accurate and educational. Subtle story and paintings are woven together well. Makes the viewer believe it's really 1874 in New York. Creativity balances the theme of the horrors of war. Found it engrossing and entertaining. "It was funny and sad, interesting and about war." "The way the artist worked was great, how he saw things and painted them." "I liked the kids messing with the man, and the boy and girl being sweet on each other." Ages 8-12. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The really really big sheww
Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands andtold us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'

I was looking for the show which had Zoots Reed on it?Thanks,Teddy

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of wonderful performances
The best thing about this DVD is that the performances shown appear in their entirety - not as excerpts! So many documentary collections just give you a portion of a performance. Also, the quality of the old films, especially the ones in color, is remarkable. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Tchaikovsky's timeless Yuletide ballet is presented in an all-new movie version with as much eloquence as one would find in a live stage production. Replete with gorgeous costumes and scenery, George Balanchine's production, adapted by Peter Martins, features the New York City Ballet with narration by Kevin Kline. From the moment the Nutcracker prince winds toymaker Drosselmeier's life-sized dolls, viewers are ushered into the captivating story of a little girl's Christmas Eve fantasy of beauty, magic, and sugarplums. While several versions of this beloved tale are available in video, this one is distinguished for the magnificent performances of a large cast of young ballet dancers from the School of American Ballet. While Culkin lends his star-studded name, that is all he lends in what is mostly a wooden performance (he often appears on the sidelines looking quite blasé and detached). More deserving accolades go to Jessica Lynn Cohen as Marie, whose genuineness never wanes and dance steps never falter. Bart Robinson Cook is wonderful as the playful Herr Drosselmeier, and Darci Kistler is the graceful Sugarplum Fairy. Mostly this film belongs to children--both on the stage and in the audience. What is lacking in spontaneous energy of live theater is made up for in a perfectly polished performance. The only thing missing is the well-earned applause. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
The video is grainy. The camera moves around a lot - lots of close up - hard to follow the dancing.

5-0 out of 5 stars nyc ballet does it best
really fabulous dancing. my daughter was a little disappointed by the ending. they just go off in a sled and that is the end. she was looking for the return to the living room and clara waking up. the rest of it was great.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this ballet
Ever since my 2 year old daughter saw this ballet at Christmas, she hasn't stopped talking about it.We bought this DVD and the first thing she says in the morning is "I want to watch the dancing girls."Even though she spends a lot of time in front of the TV screen watching this, we figure it's OK since she's watching a ballet and listening to classical music.I enjoy watching it too, even though Macaulay Culkin can't dance. ... Editorial Review

Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swiveling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice," "Baby, I Don't Care," "Don't Leave Me Now," and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jailhouse Rock
I was born in 1943.Elvis was about 4 years beyond my age;but my oldest brother loved him as well as my best girlfriend's sister. She kissed his photo everyday. Her lipstick imprinted lip marks were on his 36'x36' photograph on her bedroom door
5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Presley's Best Movie
This is Presley's third and best film which was released in 1957 just as he was reaching his peak. It is in ultra-cool black & white which just seems to add to its value. It has great dramatic appeal and is best remembered for its great songs, and for scenes that typify the Presley personality. One song is the incredible Jailhouse Rock musical sequence, with all of the blistering excitement and energetic dancing by the man who did it best.

3-0 out of 5 stars From Man Slaughter inmate to Rock n Roll Superstar
I'd Sure be delighted With your Company, Come on and WATCH Jailhouse Rock with me, lets WATCH, Everybody lets WATCH.The King of Rock n Roll in the 1957 classic musical Jailhouse Rock, from Metro Goldwyn Mayer is the story of Vincent Everett, a young man who is sent to the penatentiary for man slaughter, where is musical vocal talent is discovered and his cellmate shows him how to play guitar. He soon leaves jail behind and embarks to become a rock star, with some rejections and struggles along the way he eventually gets records sold and fans adoring him and even a tv appearance in the films most famous scene, The Jailhouse Rock sequence. This film is a rockin and rollin blast,a slamin jamin treat,Elvis rules the silver screen as awsome as the music industry,he always has and will have the throne to Rock n Roll King.If Your a fan of Elvis, musicals or classic films, I recommend this one,let Elvis Presley rock and roll you with this classic gem "Take My Advice, Treat Me Nice" "Your So Young and Beautiful to Me" ...
