Editorial Review

Here's the alpha point of Elvis Presley's film career, the introduction of the raw-boned Mississippi boy into Hollywood pictures. E.P. takes a supporting role, and his entrance is delayed for nearly 20 minutes: kid brother to returning Civil War soldier Richard Egan, his character marries Egan's sweetheart Debra Paget when Egan is presumed dead. It's a chance for Elvis, his face still trembling with baby fat, to emote dramatically and finish tragically, both of which he does passably well. A serviceable Western, the film shamelessly shoehorns four Presley tunes into two sequences: E.P. crooning on mama's porch, and performing at a country fair (where starchy locals don't seem disturbed at the boy's gyrating hips and happy feet). All in all, a shrewd way to put a foot in Hollywood's doorway, and, of course, one of the last Presley movies to feel like a real film and not a vehicle for the King. Read more

I bought mine and it's in black and white, not colorized as the store claims to be. So I would give all the stores selling this item as colorized version a zero star!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Here'sa raw Presley appearing in his film debut
For anyone who enjoys Elvis Presley's earlier films, Love Me Tender is a must buy.Presley was not even the top star of this film, but by now, the other actors are long forgotten, and Elvis Presley is a household name. This post Civil war bittersweet romance does not offer an overwhelming plot, but I enjoyed the rough edges in the characterization of the caring, but short-tempered, young Texas farmer that Presley portrays, The film does not contain a host of Elvis' songs as do his later musicals, but his sensitive rendition of "Love Me Tender" is unforgettable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great film, all things considered.[4.5 stars]
The album of original material to come out of the "Get Back" sessions of early 1969 was, quite frankly, lousy, at least by Beatles standards.John Lennon was right when he said that Let it Be (the album and the film) exposed the "myth" that was the Beatles. The myth wasn't that the Beatles were great but that they were incapable of mediocrity.John's efforts, alone, on the album prove just how mediocre they could be when they gave up trying.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE LAST TRUE TESTAMENT OF THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME, THE BEATLES!
I am the 3rd person to do a review of The Beatles legendary Documentary masterpiece film "LET IT BE". I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumers will get an accurate review. I own the original VHS version distributed by Magnetic Video from way back when. I'm now waiting for the DVD version which is also distributed by Magnetic Video to be sent to me by my recent seller which is seacoastdvds throughamazon.com.
5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
This movie represents The Beatles in the process of their final evolved sound. The film is filled with priceless moments, from the beginning stages of recording the album to the final rooftop show. Throughout the movie, one can almost sense every Beatle has detached and become their own musician, which is evident in the final sound of Let It Be. The footage reveals obvious creative tension in the studio between each member. The most amazing part of this video is after the credits roll and a very fuzzy black and white video shows John and Paul experimenting with feedback on their guitars while Yoko makes various noises - very interesting.

I have been waiting a long time to see this one and it was so worth the wait!!!! I have had the cd & only could imagine the actual concert, last night I sat back and enjoyed seeing come-backs by Joe Cocker, John Sebastian, and the very great Crosby,Stills & Nash. This concert is full of great 90's nostalgia!!!! The bands range From "Cranberries to Green day to Metallica. Sheryl Crow is fantastic !!!! Bob Dylan performs "highway 61"If you love the music of the "90s and are into the woodstock generation this is a must have. This vhs also contains footage of the audience and surrounding activities of the concert. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow--AMAZING !!!
WOW !!!! AMAZING !!!Highly, Highly, Highly, HIGHLY Recommended. This is a MUST for AiC fans. This concert played to a SOLD OUT MOORE THEATER IN A SNOW STORM---what does that tell you?lol. This concert is absolutely AMAZING--so strong and full of raw emotion...If anyone needs proof that AiC was one of the BEST bands EVER they need look no further than this performance.God, it makes me so sad to know that AiC is no more - never has a band been so revered or held up so high by their fans as AiC was and STILL IS.Layne's vocals shine bright in this performance and his status as one of the BEST if not THE best vocalists of all time is solidified once you see and hear him perform. This VHS is WORTH EVERY PENNY...There are NO bands that will EVER capture the raw emotion that AiC was capable of and there are NO vocalists that will EVER compare to Layne Staley...these facts are Clearly evident in this performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD???
I strongly agree with the other reviewers. This truly contains so many classic performances - Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Doobie Brothers, the list goes on. Why is it not yet on DVD??? People have been asking this question for so many years now. With so many other great concert performances being released recently surely "No Nukes" is deserving of being released on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD???
This is an amazing show - please remaster this one and put it out on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Nukes (should be on DVD as well on VHS issued in Holland
The few that wrote a five star comment at this site should be aware of the 3-record album (with booklet). That only part of the songs on the VHS are the same on the records, and vice versa, makes no difference. A pity they didn't make a double cd also, and issue all in Europe (Holland!!!) I keep looking for them. ... Read more

My 15 month old son LOVES this video. We bought it before Christmas and he's been watching it since.Someone likened it to a Barney-Coma, and I agree. It's like my son is in a trance when he watches this video, and the songs are so catchy my husband and I find ourselves singing them at work. The only problem is he cries for the remote saying "Barney" if it's not playing. We'll have to get Barney therapy!!! 3-0 out of 5 stars Beatles Hit the Road With Aunt Jessica And Friends
I like the eleven Beatles music scenes that are essentially pre-MTV music videos. Unfortunately, the remainder of the program, which mainly features "Aunt Jessica", will give you nightmares. They should have provided an option to play only the Beatles music scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars you will love it if your a true beatles fan
the magical mystery tour is amazing the beatles are psycadelic masterminds obviously you dont watch the movie how its supoused to be watched...on drugs.thats how they ment it to be watched i love the movie it is really trippy and i think its trippyier than yellow sub. but dont get me wrong the yellow sub has a plot and a good story line and is a better all around movie.but if your watching it for how it was sposed to be watched youd like m.m.t

3-0 out of 5 stars "Take a guess!"
"Magical Mystery Tour" is a 50 minute or so TV special that the Beatles shot and directed in 1967, and originally was shown on Boxing Day in that year in England. John, Paul, George, Ringo and his aunt take a tourist bus around England, a ride where anything can happen, and some of that anything does. The many adventures they have include a foot and car race, watching a movie in a tent bigger on the inside than the outside, a stripshow, and a singalong on the accordion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trippy...
A few years before this movie came out, a movie called "Tommy" came out. This movie took the concept album of The Who's "Tommy" and transferred it to the big-screen, using only music and absolutely no dialogue to further the story along. I never turn off a movie, no matter how bad I think it is. Except "Tommy." In reality, the film wasn't bad...It just annoyed me. There was a huge lack of entertainment going on. I wasn't expecting much from The Wall, but I've heard so many good things about it. I had to see it. Let me say, I haven't heard a lot of Pink Floyd stuff. I've only listened to four albums (Umma Gumma, Dark Side of the Moon, Atom Heart Mother, and Wish You Were Here). Yes, that's right. I haven't even heard The Wall album. This film is simalar to Tommy in the fact that Pink Floyd's music plays throughout the film. The difference is, there is some dialogue in the film although it doesn't move the plot along at all. The other difference is, this film has amazing visuals and is fun to watch. The movie's plot is basically a rock star named Pink (Bob Geldof) sits watching a war movie and begins to remember his childhood. Blended in is memories, fantasies, and a bunch of other [...] that results in one trippy movie to watch. But, as I said, the visuals are what keep you watching. The movie's metaphors (especially the title one) are very smart, the script is by Roger Waters (although I don't know how a person could write a script like this). If you're a Floyd fan/arty kinds of films, check this out for sure. All movies, in my opinion, are forms of art...But this film is actually like a work of art. Anyway, if you're just a moviegoer looking for some entertainment on a Saturday night...This isn't the movie for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE BUT DVD LACKS A BIT
Great Movie ! Can't argue that but the DVD lets it down a bit. The menu items do not work properly unless the dvd i bought is faulty? Nice cover though.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cheap price to pay for memories
Staying over at my house in high school almost always meant The Wall would make its way to the VCR. Not only because it was a great movie, but also because it had been stolen from every video store in town. By the time I was out of high school, the tape was literally worn out, and the weekly viewings had ceased.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is pretty darn snazzy...
I'd usually give it a 4 star rating...but due to it's "underdog" status it won't hurt to bolster it a little.Besides, the 1-star reduction was only considering that not everyone who watches this will have the same nostalgia as me and the other reviewers seem to keep with us.

I can remember watching this film when i was aged 4-7 and i watched so much that eventually the tape ran out, after that i have never watched it again but the memory has always lived in the back of my mind. So i thought the best way to find it on VHS was to look on Amazon but it is sold out, it is understandable, it is a kick-ass film but it has been 10 years since i watched it and amazon could make BARE money if it was available, kids and adults all over the world want to watch it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Real Al Jolson
I first saw this movie over 40 years ago when I was 12 on TV at my aunts house, and it was a magical experience I will never forget. When I recently watched the DVD release, the movie still had all the elements that made such an impression on me many years ago. Everyone who has commented have stated that Jolson did the actual singing for the film, but this is not mentioned in any of the credits. Why was this? When originally released, did the studio try to make everyone believe that Parks was doing a good imiation of Jolson?I thought there might be something at the end of the movie, but the DVD version abruptly ends as soon as THE END fades from the screen. It would have been nice if the DVD had included a short segment addressing how the movie was made with Jolson's real recordings.

4-0 out of 5 stars let him sing & he's happy!happy!!!
a fun and completely inaccurate film bio of the man who was regarded as the greatest entertainer of the first half of the 20th century, yet is mostly forgotten today?why?well, jolsons greatness seems to have been on stage; his movies (save for "hallelujah im a bum") dont hold up well.but im willing to take the word of the likes of judy garland, jack benny, george burns, et al, who unflinchingly state jolson was far and away the best.this cleaned up movie stars larry parks, but in actuality stars jolsons vocals.the same ploy was used in the recent biopic "ray", which was "honest" about the life of its subject; of course it was also a dull mess of a movie when compared with this top-notch biopic.

3-0 out of 5 stars OH MY.....
It's not entirely fair to completely write these videos off as juvenile, inane, trite and garish. They are all those things and more. Amatuerish is the one word that immediately comes to mind. Then again, most ALL videos from the very early 1980's are. I had this VHS when I was in high school and watched it religiously, never knowing how bad they really were. Curiousity got the best of me and I pulled this out of the back of the video rack and watched it last night. Boy, are these videos bad. But as a historical document of the only electronic pop band that matters, it does hold a certain fascination, especially for longtime fans. I then wondered why Depeche Mode do not have a complete video history on one DVD set. They have, after all, been around for almost 25 years and have literally dozens of singles and videos. One look at thepromotional video for "Get the Balance Right" ( I caught that one on VH1 Classic's "We Are the Eighties" last night, which made me curious enough tofind said video cassette) makes me understand why. Depeche Mode members are on record as saying they are terribly embaressed by most of their early videos andI can assure you they have every right to be. I'd keep 'em under lock and key too.

5-0 out of 5 stars hard to resist
Despite the fact I'm a diehard Depeche Mode fan, I was too young to remember most of the band's earlier work. So I got a really big kick out of watching most of these music videos for the first time. I'll admit they're not as high quality as the later videos like "Personal Jesus" and "Barrel Of A Gun," but they really strengthen their fan base. If you've got to insult this collection of videos, then you weren't much of a Depeche Mode fan in the first place. Accept these videos for what they are..."beginnings."

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong with the early videos
The less developed mind may not understand the charm of the band's earliest videos, but the ones found on these collection are more compelling than the videos from Music for The Masses and Violator in my opinion. The low budget quality adds a depth the later polished vids lack. I loved Everything Counts, the way Dave jolts around singing facing away with the camera posed above him.Just Can't Get Enough is kind of hilarious because of the way the band is dressed, but damn it if it aint a fun video! Teenagers in the eighties really had a blast with this stuff. It's too bad videos are so uber- perfect and stylized today.I always prefer the earlier vids of bands like INXS and Depeche Mode and so on. They are flawed perfection. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting alternative if you've seen "White Christmas" too often...
If your holiday film viewing includes the movie "White Christmas," then you may enjoy this classic where the song "White Christmas" actually made its debut. The plot is a flimsy excuse for showcasing numerous Irving Berlin songs (many of them very forgettable) and a few Fred Astaire numbers, including the famous drunk dance in which he was, in fact, none too sober.
5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming Christmas classic - including 'Abraham'
Most of the reviewers for this movie do a fine job of giving an accurate description of the plot of the film - it's lightweight, enjoyable holiday fare and Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas' alone is worth the price of admission. The focus of my review is essentially on the 'Abraham' musical number where all of the white performers are in 'blackface.'
5-0 out of 5 stars Crosby's Voice + Astaire's Feet = Magic!
HOLIDAY INN captures Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire together and at their peaks, competing for the affections of one girl, Linda Mason (played by Marjorie Reynolds).Jim Hardy (Crosby) has grown tired of performing in New York nightclubs and decides to open Holiday Inn, a resort for dinner and dancing that is open on holidays only.Jim's friend and co-star Ted Hanover (Astaire), a regular ladies' man, pursues Linda to the inn after his own fiance and dancing partner, Lila (Virginia Dale), leaves him.The movie's very first number, "I'll Capture Her Heart with My Singing (Dancing)," sums up the contrasting charms of Jim (the crooner) and Ted (the dancer).Apart from this number (which is reprised at the end of the movie, after Jim has won Linda) and Ted and Lila's "You're Easy to Dance With," Irving Berlin's tuneful score is holiday-themed and includes "Be Careful, It's My Heart" (for Valentine's Day), "Easter Parade," and "I'm Singing a Song of Freedom" (for Independence Day)."Abraham" (for Lincoln's Birthday) is a good song somewhat disconcertingly performed in "blackface" - clearly a custom of another era (HOLIDAY INN premiered in 1942, but even then the "blackface" number must have been going out of style). But who could forget Crosby singing "White Christmas," or listening to his own recorded voice singing a Thanksgiving song, "I've Got Plenty to Be Thankful For"?Astaire dazzles in all of his dance numbers, especially the Fourth of July "firecracker" one and the stunningly costumed one for Washington's Birthday (which turns hilarious, thanks to Jim's machinations). And HOLIDAY INN's "movie-within-a-movie" sequence is very clever, anticipating SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.Appealingly filmed in black and white, HOLIDAY INN is a wonderful musical from the movie musical's Golden Age, perfect for enjoying on any holiday of the year. ... In Neil Young's world--to paraphrase John Lennon (who was quoting HarryNilsson)--everything is the opposite of what it is. The fragile is epic, theepic is personal, the personal is a collective dream. Young's best songs arelike Tennyson's poems, somehow always shimmering under scrutiny, somehow allthe more soulful for evading fixed points of meaning. While there was nothingevasive about Young's negative opinions of MTV in the 1980s, both he and thecable channel had broad enough shoulders to collaborate on anRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Acoustic Concert!
When this MTV Unplugged concert of Neil Young originally aired on MTV, I made sure to tape it, as Neil Young is one of my favorite musicians. When I recently went to watch it, I found that it had been taped over with cartoons! (I thanked my son for that!) I really wanted a copy of this fine concert, so was very pleased to find it on Amazon.com. To me, it shows Neil Young at his purist-accompanied only by acoustic instruments. I love hearing songs like "Long May You Run" and "Pocohontas" done in an acoustic vein. The song "Stringman", which is a beautiful song, is only found on this video. I was very pleased to have a copy of that!5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
This video is a perfect example of why Neil Young has survived 3 decades at the top of the music industry; timeless classics ranging from his Buffalo Springfield days with "Mr. Soul", to his more recent"Harvest Moon". It is truly an essential for any Neil Young fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Saw This Back In The Day
I saw this movie back in the early 90's and I still think about it.I bought it tonight so I can share it with people that don't understand the punk rock / alternative culture.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Hate People...especially you
This Movie is beyond great...Everything thurston mumbles or conjures from the back of his mind into his mr. microphone is the highlight of the tape...the only problem with this VHS tape that ive had for so long is that its not on dvd yet...if you dont have this F'in movie by now you should be taken out back and put down like a lame horse...if you own it and gave it less than a 4 star rating you are an utter FOOL...THANK YOU AND GOOD DAY!....666 NyC

5-0 out of 5 stars Needs even more stars!!!
Whoever thinks Thurston should be edited out of the video obviously does not have a sense of humor.I think the great music combined with the great blurbs in-between make this one of the best rock and roll movies ever.I think the non-musical parts of the film give personality to the bands, it isn't just the same Music-talking about music-more music- more talking about music format you see in almost all other bands' documentaries. If these people think that silliness and goofing off "ruins" the band, then I would hate to be stuck on tour with them across countries and continents. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but probably not for beginners
This is one of the very few commercial videotapes on the planet that provides instruction in the 20's charleston, so if you want to learn how to dance to Chicago or New Orleans jazz, here's your chance.5-0 out of 5 stars World of Swing #6 From Partner Charlston to Lindy Charlston
I really enjoyed this tape. I practiced the moves taught in the tape at home, they were very easy to follow and understand. Then I put them into my dance and they looked very stylish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charleston is back!
This video was great for learning steps and turns that can be used in charleston. The Instructors Marcus & Bärbl were thorough and easy to follow. The dance steps are broken down for both, the guy and girl. We know Marcus & Bärbl for a long time and we promise they have a lot of experience in teaching and competing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Generally considered the first sound feature, this 1927 film is pretty much silent except for a few lines of dialogue and Al Jolson's songs. The story finds Jolson playing the son of a cantor who wants him to follow in his footsteps, but the singer prefers secular music. Except for its historical value, the film isn't all that interesting, though it is great to get a sense of why people considered Jolson to be a hugely exciting entertainer at the time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jolson will always be a star
The Jazz Singer gives us a look back into the past to a very different time; so different from today that some casually call it "corny".Well, the past was what it was and I, for one, find it quite remarkable that this particular film survived while there were so many lost forever.I love it and get a thrill seeing a "window" opened into the past. And to be able to SEE and HEAR the great Al Jolson sing and entertain always thrills me and I can understand the magnetism and appeal he had to the public and why he was so loved by them.Look at the Jazz Singer, not with jaded 2006 eyes, but with eyes eager to see and hear something and someone amazing and you will never forget it.You owe it to yourself to own this bit of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original "Talkie"
This is a grainy film, difficult to concentrate on, but film history buffs will be as riveted as I was. The almost operatic quality of the acting and makeup remind us of the miracle of the talking movie. A must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schmaltzy but still touching
The song numbers are heratwarming. The opening when the Cantor dad drags the kid home is poignant. I guess this film was just made in Hollywood even though much of it is set in New York. It is very touching though corny too. The 1920's is a rarely seen decade now as few talking films were made then. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THRILLER
They need to make this on DVD and they also need to make Moonwalker on DVD too. They need to help Michael get back. The video "Thriller" did good back in the 80's. I would do good if it can back now. This is Michael's best video that he made and is the best video ever made to mankind. No one can match to Thriller. It's the best, nobody can beat the person who is the best. Also it is almost like he wrote how to make music videos and people follow that.

5-0 out of 5 stars THRILLER - "The Making of a perfect artisits"
Michael Jackson strives to be perfect in life, because that's the only way to be, as best as you can be, and keep on moving forward in life, with everything you do. This film shows that through and through. Everybody in the universe knows Thriller. If you don't you must live on another galaxy, or you're not born as of yet. I remember when this video (VHS) was first released, and I saw a huge display of it at are local "Hills" department store. (remember those stores?) and was "thrilled" to death. I think I was about six, and was never one to really ask for anything,... but when my mom saw my face lit up at the huge Hills Michael Jackson Thriller display, she was like,... "would you like to get that?" I was like, yes please, thank you! thank you! mom!,....
5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Reality TV
I remember this video from when I was about 10 years old.My sister, cousins, and I would play this over and over.We knew EVERY dance step.Michael was better looking back then.We loved seeing the "quirky" moments on this video that showed his true character...I wonder if he's still the same?????It's a great video that is the ultimate of Behind the Scenes or The Making Of... type of videos. If you're interested in costume make-up or what goes into the making of videos this is a good tape.I don't listen to this type of music now, but this brings back a lot of my good childhood memories. It represents times when we were happy and songs were about simple things, not killing, fighting, and all of the crazy and obscene things that songs are being made about now. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Most Memorable of His Films-you know-the One with "Jocelyn Lane"
Although the Elvis formula films were pretty much the same when they were released, two factors made some significantly more appealing and memorable than others; the actress playing his love interest and the songs that were incorporated into the production.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's Elvis and it's in color! Were you expecting "West Side Story"?
A very funny film. The soundtrack was composed of old songs from earlier Elvis LPs (to keep the film's budget at a minimum). Elvis looks great and Jocelyn Lane looks incredible. In my opinion (along with many others), Jocelyn was the prettiest costar Elvis ever had. Julie Adams is very attractive as the "older" woman. Practically all of the women in the film are hot (and there are loads of groovy gals). In fact--although not intending to be--"Tickle Me" remains one of the best children's pictures ever. I certainly couldn't get enough of it when it played at the local theater when I was in grade school. I went back to see it again five times! What can I say? Puberty calling! [filmfactsman]

If a musical sci-fi satire about an alien transvestite named Frank-n-Furter, who is building the perfect man while playing sexual games with his virginal visitors, sounds like an intriguing premise for a movie, then you're in for a treat. Not only is
