3-0 out of 5 stars Suberb production poor transfer to tape
This production features the talents of some superb singers who can act well. The outdoor scenes were filmed in the Middle East and are very authentic. The indoor scenes look like a poor persons house. The kings are very resplendent and resemble a renaissance painting. The singing is excellent.Teresa Stratis shows emotion both vocally and visually.
3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT opera, so-so production
As a lifelong fan of Amahl and Menotti alike, I wish I could say that this is the greatest opera video on earth.Sadly, there are sound and visual quality issues that make this production a disappointment, despite the appearance of the lovely Teresa Stratas.
2-0 out of 5 stars Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors
I purchsed this video a few years ago and was also very disappointed. I have nothing more to add to the other reviews posted here; just to agree that the sound was poor and the viewing quite fuzzy. I remember watching not only the first broadcast on NBC but several broadcasts years after that, with different casts. It was and still is my favorite Christmas story. I will certainly purchase the Schippers CD and hope to see another video or DVD in the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this concert
It's all of the good things that others have said but the one thing that struck me most while watching it (shortly after 9/11) was the irony at the end of the song "We Shall Be Free", when a huge banner with the word "Freedom" was unrolled between the 2 World Trade buildings. It still gives me chills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you ever seen a grown man cry?
In Central Park, as in all his concerts, Garth Brooks proves himself to be just as fragile as he is strong with the rare talent of being able to let the music possess and take over his anima while connecting with the audience at once. As always, he willingly lends center stage to his guests including Don McLean,Billy Joel, and even his fiddle player Jimmy Mattingly. As an audience member watching from my TV screen, I sure felt like I was there live watching from the front row with eyes in total awe because of Brooks' engaging and energetic demeanor.

5-0 out of 5 stars THRILLER
They need to make this on DVD and they also need to make Moonwalker on DVD too. They need to help Michael get back. The video "Thriller" did good back in the 80's. I would do good if it can back now. This is Michael's best video that he made and is the best video ever made to mankind. No one can match to Thriller. It's the best, nobody can beat the person who is the best. Also it is almost like he wrote how to make music videos and people follow that.

5-0 out of 5 stars THRILLER - "The Making of a perfect artisits"
Michael Jackson strives to be perfect in life, because that's the only way to be, as best as you can be, and keep on moving forward in life, with everything you do. This film shows that through and through. Everybody in the universe knows Thriller. If you don't you must live on another galaxy, or you're not born as of yet. I remember when this video (VHS) was first released, and I saw a huge display of it at are local "Hills" department store. (remember those stores?) and was "thrilled" to death. I think I was about six, and was never one to really ask for anything,... but when my mom saw my face lit up at the huge Hills Michael Jackson Thriller display, she was like,... "would you like to get that?" I was like, yes please, thank you! thank you! mom!,....
5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Reality TV
I remember this video from when I was about 10 years old.My sister, cousins, and I would play this over and over.We knew EVERY dance step.Michael was better looking back then.We loved seeing the "quirky" moments on this video that showed his true character...I wonder if he's still the same?????It's a great video that is the ultimate of Behind the Scenes or The Making Of... type of videos. If you're interested in costume make-up or what goes into the making of videos this is a good tape.I don't listen to this type of music now, but this brings back a lot of my good childhood memories. It represents times when we were happy and songs were about simple things, not killing, fighting, and all of the crazy and obscene things that songs are being made about now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DVD, please.I'll take two.
Fascinating and fun.I found the partner book in a used book store, and it, too, is excellent.Even though the program is not au courant, it's a terrific educator for everyone, little and big. But,jeez, where's the DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great show
I was recently reminded of seeing this series when it was on PBS... and I've got to say it was impressive. I was hoping it had been released on DVD, but since it hasn't I'll probably buy the VHS tapes. I'm not a teacher or professional linguist, but I found this miniseries to be really good. Its not only fascinatingly educational, but also entertaining. Just because most of the other reviews mention using it in class doesn't mean its not something worth watching at home for your own edutainment!

5-0 out of 5 stars SO GREAT!
A month or two ago, my AP English teacher played us one of the videos to this series.Considering the content and the fact that this is a somewhat old documentary, I had very low expectations...oh my god was I wrong.I have NEVER been so entertained by a documentary! There were all of these sayings and terms that I had completely forgotten about (or perhaps never heard) and it was so hilarious seeing the old fashions and technology. It was like opening a time capsule. The watcher can get a completely untainted opinion regarding all aspects of the culture of the late 80's / early 90's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a Beatles documentary!!
I LOVE this documentary! It was one of the first that I ever watched about The Beatles and it remains a treasure of my small VHS/DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best documentary at its time.
My mom introduced me to the Beatles at a ripe age of four, she was a big time Beatles fan, but I'm a bigger one, too bad I wasn't around in the 60's, I missed out on some good happenings. Anyways, we rented this video back in 1984 when it first came out, and I was hooked. Even before that, I loved the Beatles, and use to plug in the headphones and listen to their old records my mom had and this just added to my taste. You see my mom didn't have all their albums, but I ended up getting them all on vinyl before they discontinued them back in the mid 80's (the capitol albums). Anyways, what I'm getting at here, if you like the Beatles, and you don't know much about them, this will discribe it pretty good, considering it's narrarated, and it's before Anthology, and it's 1984, so they did a good recap on their lives without them really telling it themselves. It's got interesting things on their childhood, into getting interested in rock and roll, since it was born when they were teenagers, to the skiffle band John Lennon formed in 1956 called the Quarrymen, to their time in Hamburg with Stu and Pete, to kicking out Pete and getting Ringo. It's all here, from rags to riches, to fame and fortune, to calm to madness. People will remember the Beatles even hundreds years from now, and I'm not the only one who believes that. But anyways, young and old, prescious and delicate, if you like the Beatles, this should be in your collection, along with its big brother which came out about a decade later Anthology.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe This Isn't on DVD
Back in the middle 1980s, if you were a Beatles fan this was one of your few choices in full-length home video. The misleadingly titled 'Compleat Beatles' was one of the first direct-to-video rockumentaries to later be broadcast on PBS and cable TV, and it was accompanied by a two-volume set of books containing sheet music. (The books were available separately.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Patti Takes Over
I've most enjoyed the parts with Patti Labelle singing two songs with The New Jersey Mass Choir.I really liked when Dianna Ross asked for somebody to help her sing and the end of the show and Patti Labelle was more than glad to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just music................but music history!
I had the pleasure of watching this incredible program when it originally aired on NBC (May 16, 1983). Like cheese and fine wine, it gets better with age. Great sets by Stevie Wonder, Four Tops/Temptations, Lionel Richie and the original Jackson Five/Michael Jackson.
5-0 out of 5 stars OMG!!!! No other words needed!
I am only 21 years old.I was born the year this was aired on tv and saw it at least 7-10 years later. From that day on I was a Motown music fanatic!!!!!!!I also became a Michael fan that day.Even though Motown was no longer the major hit producer that it once was, it was wonderful to see all those veteran acts perform on one stage. The production of this show...the sheer magic of the event could be felt throught the tv screen!I really want to buy this on DVD!!!!I must keep this and pass it on to my children! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So Why Isn't This Available on DVD?
This movie is an all time great and is particularly needed in this time of war and trial of the national soul.Surely Hollywood politics is not keeping this from the public, is it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Now more than ever...
This is the kind of movie that stirs my deepest emotions for this country, when you hear these marches being played,I get goose pimples(honestly),and can't help it but to start singing along, the story is very true of the man that composed them, now more than ever we should remember to sing them once in a while,to remind us of how great our country is,in an era in which some people are trying to divide us whether to do our duty or not as the defenders of democracy,it is always good to remember that in past wars our soldiers marched to the battlefield to the tune of these songs, and many of them offered the ultimate sacrifice,if we would have laid back then, and let our enemies overtake us,today we probably would be speaking a different language.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Philip Sousa Fantasia
This is an amusing little yarn on Sousa and his music.Being only about 90 minutes long the movie does not attempt to be comprehensive with his life, but concentrates instead on creating a portrait of him.Clifton Webb has Sousa's somewhat stiff, yet humorous personality down pretty well. The episodes depicted in the movie are brief vignettes, loosely based on some actual events. The Marine Corps probably did treat their March King in a rather off-hand manner as shown in the movie.Sousa did make the Marine Band from a 3rd rate emsemble into one of the best military bands in the country, and the Marines could not really offer him anymore than what they had already given him. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of a REAL live performance
SIGN O' THE TIMES was an excellent "concert movie"... but, as we all know, alot of it was re-shot and re-filmed with prince lip synching. THIS, however, was NOT a lip synched concert (to the idiot who said otherwise) ... as for guitar not plugged in?You can tell whoever wrote that review knows little about live performances... (...) ... it's called a wireless system... it's been around for YEARS and yes, Prince was one of the first to use it extensively.
4-0 out of 5 stars On DVD ? A Shame It Won't Be....Ever
Live at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, Prince Rogers Nelson delivers an electrifying live mix of R&B, Soul, Blues, and Rock with a somewhat electronic treatment from the rhythm section known as The Revolution. Generously borrowing from some of his heroes including James Brown, The Kid makes the most of every inch of floor space for a great 90-minute set that offers extended jam versions of some of his earlier radio hits like '1999' and 'Delirious'. While some sections of the show move too slowly or are redundant, overall the vision of the genius is apparent. 'The Beautiful Ones' is poignant and sensual. 'Baby I'm a Star' culminates into a conga line of sorts, as everybody gets into the act onstage, including Sheila E. (his opening act at the time.) But the jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring 20-minute encore of 'Purple Rain' is the true gem of this concert, and it is only fitting he saved the best for last. A religious experience, to say the least: only once in a generation can a musical legend captivate and mesmerize an audience with one song.

Editorial Review

Elvis Presley does the clam--a now-forgotten dance--in this 1964 potboiler in which the King stars as a singer who gets a gig in Ft. Lauderdale with his combo but has to baby-sit a mobster's teenage daughter (Shelley Fabares) as part of the deal. Fabares's character, looking for a break, runs wild and makes life difficult for Elvis. The film has the usual "Elvis movie" bounce and wolfish jokes and glossy disposability, but the endearing (and smart) presence of Fabares as the love interest adds a bit more zip than usual. Songs include the title track, plus "Puppet on a String," "Do Not Disturb," and "Let's Party Tonight." Directed by Boris Sagal (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some technical data about this film
There is a very good reason for this film not living up to That the Way It Is.I am sure if you have seen this movie you have noticed that it is much more grainey and not as bright as TTWIS or other movies for that matter. This contributes a lot to the picture not being as well received. The fact of the matter is that MGM in it's infinite wisdom chose to shoot the movie in 16 mm not 35 mm as most all movies. This is a little known fact. But all you have to do is watch for many of the stage segments and you can see the photographers crawling around the various stages with a relatively small camera in hand. They may have done this for maneuverability sake but with significant loss in quality.16 mm is a long way from 35 mm in all measuring points. This may also be why they have not put it out on DVD as yet.The movie is very grainy and this adds a subconscious negativity to the movie.I was present at many of the concerts that were filmed for this movie. The live shows were not grainy at all and they were very sharp and well lit and came across much better than the film.
5-0 out of 5 stars This video rocks, entertains . . . and saddens
To start, I won't labor through listing all of the music on the concert video.Reviewer Alejandra Vernon did that nicely in her excellent Spotlight Review.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing thing I have ever seen!.
I visited the official NIN website a while back and it seems like Trent Reznor himself said that he was going to rerelease this tape on dvd with a few more extras and videos but I doubt that its going to happen what with Trent taking forever to release something, anyway Closure is a fantastic tape that takes a look at some concert footage during the self destruct tour 1994-1997 on the first tape, the footage was captuered on hand held cameras so don't expect it to have excellent quality I just thought it was fairly good. The second tape though is deffinetely worth it, it has all the music video from NIN up untill the perfect drug which is the most amazing video ever and also contians the happiness in slavery video which has some very graphic violence and gore you have been warned its not for the easily offended or those who have a weak stomach. Overall I highly recomend this tape to all NIN fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this
I liked the music video tape more than the convert footage, but I enjoyed both of them still. The Music videos I was impressed by the cinimatography of the music videos in general. Be warned though, there is some real graphic stuff on this tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE Little Bill
My girls (5 and 2) love Little Bill. This past Christmas, we bought our girls the Nick Jr. Christmas DVD for a long car trip.Although I thought I would lose my mind with the other two stories that played over and over, I could watch the Little Bill episode everyday. Good thing, because I think we have watched it 500,000 times.5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than Little Bill!
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! Bill Cosby for creating such a wonderful series of books and videos. Last year while pregnant with our first child I began to look for books and videos that were educational and entertaining which shecould watch. So we were quite ecstatic when we came across Little Bill one Saturday morning (Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Channel 2). Since that day we have purchased every Little Bill book (every series, there are a few) and video. We even have the Little Bill doll. Our daughter has been watching and enjoying Little Bill since she was four months old. She looks forward to Little Bill every day. Already she is familiar with the opening jazz number.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge Is A Key
I have had 2 copies of this video. It is that good! I first bought this video only because it contained The Ronettes of whom I am a great fan. But this video contains so much more. Not only great and rare performances, but also insightful interviews and documentary. That is what sets this video apart from others. It is extremely well edited and perfectly balanced. Just the right amount of documentary that is paired with the performances. Often I've seen other videos with too much of one or the other. But this video strives for an even balance of the two.

This video is a great buy. If you've never seen or heard Jackie Wilson this video is a wonderful showcase of his talent. If you're looking to find a genuine singer with natural talent, in today's world of prefabricated music, Jackie Wilson is the one you've been looking for. He's an incomparable talent, and I can't say enough great things about him. Prepare to be amazed.

After watching this "Momentary Lapse of Reason" concert, I promptly bought the video when it became available. The same shivers ran down my spine as I watched it. Songs including "Learning to fly", "Run like Hell", "Sorrow", "Great Gig in the Sky" blow me away on this video. I have watched every Pink Floyd DVD available and am in disbelief at how none of them even compare to my VHS copy of "The Delicate Sound of Thunder". This is the Best Pink Floyd video... I'm not sure why it hasn't been released on DVD yet, but I hope and pray that it will be someday soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grammy winner.....
If memory serves (and I have a brain like a seive these days), this VHS video won a GRAMMY that year (1987?) for "Best Video--Long Version".
5-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that... and CAN'T WAIT to see it on DVD!
I really, REALLY, hope this is true, that they're considering putting this out on NTSC DVD.If not, I'm going to have to hurt someone.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Rapture Please!
The first time that I saw this video I was 21 years old. That was in 1989.I seriously cried. This video of Anita Baker was the most truestof all her videos. Not only did I enjoy hearing her live--but truth be told--this girl can really sing!I must have watched it over and over again until I just couldn't watch it-- and then some.Well, I lost the video after I relocated to New York in 1990.But ten years later, I found it again on Amazon.com.And still, everytime that I see it--I still cry."Watch Your Step" is one of her most powerful performances.I still feel like I'm in church everytime that I hear this song. Anita just goes somewhere... faraway... in this song to a place that only she knows. It's great!I love her so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anita Baker Live.WOW!!!!!
Anita Baker came on the scene with a bang.Very few artists can deliver such a outstanding live performance. In a time where the term Diva is applied to 18 year olds with very limited stage experience, this concert shows how it should be done.Minus all of the distractions like excessive dancers and explosions, performers of Anita Bakers caliber focus on true individual talent.I was fortunate to see her in a very small club and her show was stripped down to allow us to hear her remarkable voice. This was very early in her career, but it was clear that she would be a success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Highwaymen-Willie, Waylon, Cash & Kris
It's an excellent view of past country stars and their rise to fame.It is one of the best tapes especially since the famous Johnny Cash is no longer with us.It's an excellent tribute to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Concert
If I could give this a higher rating it would be ten stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars The closest thing to the Highwaymen at the Patriot Center June 10, 1995
Written by Stuart Borris - Do not confuse this group with the original Highwaymen folk group, because the 4 guys that make up these Highwaymen are much different than the men who first used the name. These are 4 legends who came together to give real back bone to the name Highwaymen and this tape is a solid introduction to that.To say this item is great is like saying the Pacific Ocean has a lot of water. If you appreciate the roots of country music, there is nothing better than Waylon, Johnny, Willie and Kris on stage at the same time working together? In this presentation, you see 4 legends coming together to make a rare combonation. These guys created something so special it can not be matched. The closest thing to them might be the Rat Pack or maybe if BB King, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Diamond came together, recorded and performed on stage together. That is a tall tall order but the Highwaymen are all that and have made their mark for many generations to follow. I had the fortune of seeing these guys in person at the Patriot Center Fairfax, Virginia on June 10, 1995. Even though I had always liked Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, my friend Eric had to talk me into going to this show. It was at a time when I was more into Hootie and the Blowfish and Collective Soul. Even though I wasn't excited when I came in, I came out of that show a real fan of the Highwaymen and an even bigger fan Cash and Jennings. It was my one and only opportunity of seeing them because they never returned to the Washington DC area again. I wish I had known how good they were, for I would have surely seen them multiple times. Even though there will never be another opportunity for me to see them live again as Cash and Jennings have passed away, the footage here makes it possible for me to see them again and again and again and again and again and again and again. The presentation does a near perfect job at showing their legendary presence on stage and incredible musical ability on stage. Along with that, it also provides an inside look at their relationship together through interviews and by the stories they tell. Afterall, not only are they performers, they are also emotional storytellers as well. As a result you will get a real feel of what the Highwaymen were about from this. As far as the orignal folk group also called the Highwaymen, these 4 legends do not take anything away from their musical accomplishments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than 100 minutes of pure fun !
I must say I decided to review this film because it had so much negative reviews. I LOVE this film. It's pure fun and completely crazy and it's fine like that. If you want to watch an art film, don't watch an Elvis Presley film.

3-0 out of 5 stars DANCES WITH WOLVES of 1968
Before people lose their minds about the title of my review, just think about this: I genuinely wonder how the Native American community viewed this film when it was released.Sure, the stereotypes we see in STAY AWAY, JOE are now considered highly offensive--that Native Americans are irresponsible and alcoholic and such--but were they thrilled to be shown in a movie where they weren't getting shot off a horse by John Wayne?

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrapbook...needs to be on DVD with more footage!
This is a great document of Nirvana during their rise to fame and the peak of their live shows and TV appearances intersperced with some behind the scenes footage. Some of it's funny, some of it's a shadow of things to come, but it is a snapshot of the early 90s (along with The Year Punk Broke).
5-0 out of 5 stars Should be released on DVD
This material is the best of its kind and deserves to benefit from high-fidelity technology like DVD.It should be reformatted and released to the people that it belongs to.The fans. Not Courtney Love. A woman that could never even take the name Cobain as her own. But, come to think of it, who cares.Courtney only screwed herself out of the profits it could/may have generated. Now theres just tons of bootlegs. Way to use your brain Courtney! Oh wait, what brain.
5-0 out of 5 stars awesome.
ok first of all, let me just say this was by far the best nirvana footage on video ive ever seen. one of the best parts was the smells like teen spirit show where kurt is, well, being kurt. AND the come as you are show he like freakin screams his lungs out for the soft parts, its great. i never relized what a funny man he was before. i laughed, i cried, i laughed. i love nirvana and i recommend this to any nirvana fan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable to warp young minds....
I rented this film in my youth, and after I had watched it, left it downstairs next to the VCR.My younger sister popped it in, and I heard a mouthful from my older brother about how she shouldn't have been watching it, and I shouldn't have been watching it.Well, it's too late, I already did watch it, and my mind is now officially warped, hehehehe...My brother would freak out at other early favorites of mine, like Joe's Garage and Trout Mask Replica, but he was OK.As for this film, I love Ken Russell's work.He was on fire in the 1970's, and it's a shame that he hasn't really made a great film since Altered States. This film really has nothing to do with Franz Liszt (or Richard Wagner), but it's still a marvel to look at and to listen to.Great stuff. Now, how about a DVD?

4-0 out of 5 stars A disgrace Warner persist on VHS.
Indispensable, cult-status Ken Russel movie (not only for fans of The Who), that masterfully captures and subversively portrays on screen classical piano player/composer Frantz Liszt's personality: a legendary genious of a man whose life and times match that of a Rock star, 100 years before Rock was invented. If Glen Gould is the flamboyant 20th century classical piano player that rocked an establishment, just watch this movie to compare the original Master on his heyday.
