5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for children to music appreciation!
My 5 yo loves classical music, and I found these videos at my library. He loves them! I appreciate how Marsalis uses classical music to help us understand jazz, which I like but never really "appreciated." I'm sure we'll borrow them more as he ages and can comprehend more and more of the content!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music by one of its greatest lovers
Wynton Marsalis, one of the greatest musicians of his generation, has always been involved with teaching music. This video is a real must for those who love music - not only jazz, Marsalis' speciality, but all kindsof music. The fourth part, "Tackling the Monster" (in whichMarsalis shows his 12-step method of practicing music), is my favorite one.Inspiring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good One
I'd have bought this video just for the solos Wynton plays on it.They're more than worth the cost of the tape. The history of the development of early jazz is good stuff, too, though. It's all done through musicalexamples and is just as good for kids as it is for practicing musicians. Worth your dollar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
Our kid'a love it! Mr Wynton Marsalis is the bomb! Our middle school just isn't teaching this, and as the only really original music from the USA I feel jazz is pretty important! You won't be sorry! In fact the whole family will enjoy this fine box set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis On Music is an instant classic.
Marsalis on Music is the young people's series for our time, hosted by Wynton Marsalis, the most popular and acclaimed jazz musician of his generation anddistinguished classical performer as well.Withhelp from his jazz band and students from the Tanglewood Music Center, led by Seiji Ozawa, Wynton puts a fresh spin on music appreciation. His inspired instruction, backed by superb performances and exciting animated graphics, not only teaches the fundamentals of music, but makes learning fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis on Music, from a music teacher's perspective
This video series is certainly not a substitute for a sound music education, and does not promote itself as such.It focuses on the elementsof jazz and jazz theory, a component that is lacking or inadequate in mostof the popular music curriculums for the elementary and junior high school. I like this particular series for several reasons. First, it is somethingI would leave a substitute teacher because the students can watch it andthere is plenty of room for discussion and practice later on.Second,as asuccessful African-American musician, he is a good role model for youngmusicians. I work with at-risk students, and have found that it isimportant to present them with some positive, successful role models thatare culturally diverse. Finally, the presentation is attention grabbing.Marsalis has a way of communicating clearly in this series. He explainsmusical concepts from the simplest to some that are fairly complex in a waythat is direct. There is a lot of basic music theory embedded in thisseries. Plus, it's more fun than lecturing, and kids seem to enjoy it as achange of pace. It's not a substitute for good teaching, but it cansupplement and round out a good music education program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marsalis on Music
All four Marsalis on Music videos are entertaining, educational, and good enough to watch again. My mom puts his vides on our car video system because of the beautiful music she gets to hear in the background. My 5 year old sister and I particularly enjoyed Why Toes Tap where he explains the jazz and ragtime beats.Marsalis relates well to kids.I play both alto and tenor sax in my junior high school band, and would recommend Toes Tap for lunch time viewing for everyone before band practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth buying AND watching (over and over and . . . .)
This video is targeted toward young, basically beginning music students. It works well for that, but adults and more seasoned students will also benefit immensely. It is not only worth watching once, but worth watching every few months. Watching Marsalis and Yo Yo Ma trading licks is alone worth the price!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The purpose of this is for people who do not 'want' to read music
The person who hammered this product missed the point. This is created exactly for the purpose he criticized. I am 36 years old and I have no desire to learn to 'read music'. I just want to learn a simple way to play the piano. That is what I liked about this product. My wife can read music, and play beautiful songs but now I can as well at a simpler level. Mr. 1 Star must be resentful of the fact that this video allows people to play as well as him without the time or effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck!
The positive reviews given for this product must have been written by employees of the company who produced the product.Thankfully, I checked out this item from the library at no cost. This video is worthless for purposes of teaching you how to play the piano. It does not teach you how to read music. It does not teach you the 7 notes of the keyboard. It does not show you how to play any tunes. What does it do?It shows you how to play notes sequentially up and down the keyboard (as if you need a video to show you how to do that), and refers to the keys by numbers; whereas the rest of the world refers to the keys of a piano by the letters A to G.Very poorly conceived approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars I learned in 1/2 hour!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I did like the video but i would be better as a DVD. This video is not intended for learning congas but for enjoying and listening, and maybe get some ideas for soloing on congas. Anga is one of the 3 conga birtuso players i know. The other 2 are Changuito and Giovani Hidalgo. It would be better if this video came whith a book, whith the transcriptions of the things he plays on the video. The image and sound are very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding video!
First off, it's important to understand what this video is and what it is not. It's not a beginner's video; it assumes the viewer has at least 1 year's worth of playing experience, including personalized instruction on the Tumbao and Guaguanco patterns. If you want to get all that you possibly can from this video, you need to be at the stage at which you can learn by watching.Miguel teaches not as a conga player or even a percussionist, but as a musician.I thought the ensemble and DJ sets were excellent -- at the very least, they serve as a demonstration that a good conga drummer is by no means constrained to Latin music.4-0 out of 5 stars Pay Attention to this One
First, this is not another typical 'instructional video'. This is one I feel beginners through advanced intermediate players will enjoy watching many, many times. Miguel does provide some philosophy and some tips--including how to develop solos using a ground-up approach adding 'melody' gradually (he uses all 5 drums throughout most of the video).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Awareness Would Be a More Accurate Title
I have never been so disappointed in a training video. My job involves consulting and teaching and by the end of the day my voice can end up raspy. I had hoped to find techniques or excercises that would help. Instead I found that before speaking I should say, "thank you to my source" and surrender to the infinite, then "surrender to the power within". I was left to ponder unqualified statements such as, "voice is the only artistic experience which is finite and infinite at the same time".5-0 out of 5 stars After viewing video, 7 min. for 7 days is minimum commitment
I have had the pleasure of attending Arthur's one-day and five-day workshops. This video captures the essence of his phenomenal, spiritual approach. During the workshops, other attendees often gasp in amazementwhen they hear the "after" voice of someone following a simple, short exercise. You may find yourself emotionally moved after following thetechniques in this video, and realizing that you really DO have wonderfulspeaking AND singing voices. I bought this video in the year between thetwo workshops to remind me of his 12 rituals and 7-minute exercises. Youwill find all of that and more on this video! Arthur says that everyonewill notice a significant improvement in their voices after only 1 week ofhis program. The 7-minutes are easily incorporated into the rest of eachmorning's rituals. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I have been playing for a couple of years and try to push myself to learn new styles while deepening my understanding of music overall. This video is made by Dean and his trio band. They are obviously talented musicians, however, they are very dorky. Notwithstanding the learned value of the video, at times I felt as though I was watching an SNL skit or a rerun of Happy Days featuring Ritchie Cunningham and Potsie on drums and guitar. Dean, however, challenges the viewer with mostly traditional songs, and a wide array of styles. He is extremely detailed and takes his time explaining fundamentals, which I greatly appreciate. As an example, some of the problems I was having as a developing player were attributed to the placement of my thumb...who would have thought? Dean discusses thumb placement at one point, and thankfully, I have noticed smoother chord progressions. His traditional songs seem basic, but try playing along with the band...they are challenging at times. This instructional video has made me a better player overall. That is the reason why we buy instructional videos, isn't it? The bottom line: good value, solid instruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for the beginner
I have purchased several "teach yourself the guitar" tapes.Dean Hamill's volumes 1 and 2 are, by far, better than any other tapes I've seen out there for several reasons.First, they do not rush the student as they break lessons into logical and manageable steps.Second, they come with a small booklet so you can practice the lesson without continually running the tape.Third, they are realistic in what you can and cannot learn.I purchased two other tapes (one of which was a Hal Leonard) which seemed to jump from teaching you the C chord and a scale to expecting you to improvise with an on screen band.I would have purchased volume 3 if it existed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guitar Now! By Deab Hamil
O.K. I checked this Video out (volume I & II) from our local library.Mr. Hamill has done a good job organizing the material in fact better than other Guitar Videos I have seen so far, I have watched may be at least 10 of them.He may seem a bit too detail oriented at first but that is what is need for the beginners.By watching the video I have learned a few things I didn't know before.Yes, this would be a good first time instructional video.I recommend it for the beginners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Instructional
The songs are taught with instruction and detail. At the end of each song it is presented with a singer and guitar only to help you get the flow of the song. After you get it down it is easy to jam with the original song. I love to jam with Led Zeppelin and Billy Idol. The songs on this tape are a little bit more difficult than some of the other tapes (Classic Rock) with Randy Rhodes (Crazy Train) being the most difficult. With some work you will be playing along. I find these videos much more fun than learning from books, and even if you don't like all the songs it is cool to check out the style of various guitar players.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guitar Lesson
For any guitar player, this is about as close to having a teacher in the room with you without actually having one.The video shows you how to play several songs from start to finish, explains how to play the chords in the songs and optional fingering for some of the chords. The singers who sing along also make the video entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally....Heavy Metal
If anyone is looking for a tape that is going to teach you Heavy Metal, (the way it should be played), then this is the video for you. Finally an instructor who can really teach. No more of that "one finger wonderjunk."This video rules, I can't wait for another volume. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun! Drum along!
Congas, Djembes, Ashikos, Dumbeks, Council Drums, Cowbells, Shakeres and every other form of world percussion is presented here on tape in play along format. This video brings back memories of my happy hippie days and "zoning in the domes" at UC Davis. Everyone has a percussion instrument, and they are in a circle having a great time playing together. The infamous wild chickens of UCD are dancing around the circle. Geodesic Domes are the backdrop, an old university experiment in alternative housing. The rooster has too much competition for noise and is going nuts. This is an out of decade experience. However, if you can get past your 21st century biases and pick up an instrument, like I have seen many children do, it can be extremely fun. I teach world percussion and do school demonstrations. The children are eager to participate.Along with demonstrations of foods of the world, this is a great inroad to international understanding for school age children. Each peice on the video is broken down into four for four core players. On screen sheet music preceeds each peice. The group is comprised of 12 to 15 people, from novice to advanced. Everyone is contributing whatever they can offer.Read more
