5-0 out of 5 stars Five star performance by Diane Keaton, as always
I'm in awe on how great an actress Diane Keaton is!Her performance in this film, though a very sad film, was awesome!!!I'm addicted to all her movies. When will this movie and some of her old movies be available on DVD? She's such an excellent actress that all her movies should easily be available to the public- especially on DVD format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another look at a darker side of life in the seventies
Even today, this movie that made a statement on the debauchery of the seventies, is still relevant. The story of a young lady out on her own for the first time, free from her morality preaching catholic dad and hungry to indulge in the night life. A frequenter of the area bar scene, Dianne Keaton in perhaps her sexiest, if not most provocative role hops from dive to dive, man to man in an attempt to whet her insatiable sexual appetite. An interesting, if dark look at the bar scene and all its unpredictability. Directed with a style of its own, and a good eye for character development, "Goodbar" is an excellent film - one of the best of the seventies. It's also one of the most chilling endings of any movie I've ever seen - one that leaves you almost gasping. Much of the subject matter of this film won't have the same shocking effect it had upon it's original release in the mid-seventies. Today's premium cable original programming (eg. "Queer as Folk) make this minor league stuff by comparison. But that doesn't make this movie any less disturbing. This is still a movie that is just as applicable to today's careless adventures into the night life. Tuesday Weld, Tom Berenger, Richard Kiley, Levar Burton and William Atherton ("Die Hard's" pain in the butt news reporter) are perfectly cast and make notable contributions. And Richard Gere in one of his earliest roles gives a performance that surely got him future roles.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best!
I have this movie on VHS and it is one of my favorite movies to watch! Now, will somebody please explain why Paramount has yet to release this on DVD! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. Read more

this film was brillant, the story was written well and the stars were fantasic in this film a must see with a sad ending

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Soundtrack...
The musical score in the original version underlined the melodrama in an almost 1950's way.The new version is not only more true to S.E. Hinton's novel but the soundtrack is much more appropos, in time with the early/mid 1960's backdrop of the story. You can't get more timeless than bluesy surf garage rock mixed with Sun era/early RCA Elvis. The new sounds juxtaposed against the original 'Stay Gold' theme provide a relief which further accentuates the beauty of the original composition.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
I've always enjoyed "Cruising", Billy Friedkin's opus on violence, male homosexuality, leather and all things bizarre. Right from that great line, "Have you ever been porked?" between stars Paul Sorvino and a fresh-faced Al Pacino, this film draws me in like few others.

1-0 out of 5 stars SEY GOO'BYE TO MUH WORTHLESS FILM!
The first time I saw this film, age, I think, 14 or 15, I hated it.It was absolutely horrid - the acting, the music, the cinematography, everything. Then a few years later I gave it a second chance, and I thought it was pretty good, at least good enough to buy.
5-0 out of 5 stars On DVD, yet again...
Brian De Palma's blood soaked gangster epic is on DVD, once again.I'll say this right off the bat, if you own the previously released Special Edition of Scarface, there's no reason to run out and buy this Platinum Edition, which has an assortment of previously released extras to go along with a counter for how many times the "F" word is used and how many bullets are fired.Besides that, there's nothing here that hasn't been seen before, but if you don't already own Scarface on DVD, well then, this is worth picking up.As for the film itself, it's a bloody crime epic featuring one of Al Pacino's best, and most infamous, performances as Cuban hood turned drug kingpin Tony Montana; but chances are, you already know all that. The DVD's picture quality looks cleaner, and the "remastered and remixed" sound is crisper as well, but whether or not you want to lay down the cash for this depends on how many times you've been suckered into buying the movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Say hello to my little friend!"
`Scarface' is one of those classic films that, even though it wasn't recognized by prestigious awards ceremonies as worthy, it'll be remembered far longer than films like `Crash' and `Million Dollar Baby'.Why?Well for starters it's really what made Al Pucino famous.Sure, he was in `The Godfather' films and he was brilliant in them (the Oscar nods prove that) but to me `The Godfather' belongs to Brando, but `Scarface', not that is in all respects Al's picture, from start to finish, it belongs to Pucino.

Throughout his long, wandering, often distinguished career Francis Ford Coppola has made many films that are good and fine, many more that are flawed but undeniably interesting, and a handful of duds that are worth viewing if only because his personality is so flagrantly absent. 1-0 out of 5 stars I refuse the offer
What we have here is, basically, two, because who actually has seen or even likes the third, of the most overblown, overhyped and unjustifiably overrated American films of all time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dark & Delightful
I enjoyed watching these movies so much, I wish I had bought the DVDs a long time ago. Its amazing to see how the Part-III was made 18 years after part-I was made and everything looks so continuous if you watch them together. There has been much speculation on how the events in The Godfather novel written by Mario Puzo, the book the film is based on, could be an exposé of true facts. Many believe that the character of Johnny Fontane , for instance, was based on Frank Sinatra's real life, and many of the other characters were modeled after real people. I won't go into that: frankly, I have no idea whether these voices are reliable, although the Frank Sinatra reference seems obviously quite believable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Wanted This!
We have enjoyed the Godfather saga ever since it first came out in the 1970s. A young Al Pacino made his mark in this movie and we think that it was one of the roles that enabled to go as far as he has. Also, as a part of our family is from New Jersey, the period scenes of Ellis Island and New York City lets us remember what it was like growing up in that time and lets our family's new generation learn about it too. We have had the collection on VHS for some time, but the opportunity to have it on DVD was too good to pass up. The price was excellent as well, considering that it's all the movies plus the fourth DVD with the behind the scenes stuff.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big name cast adds up to unfocussed dud. The worst movie of this genre.
Incredible does describe this movie- incredibly bad! This movie doesn't know what it wants to be. At times one can see attempts to recreate and milk the genuine rage and drama of "Mississippi Burning" or the anger and impunity of "Ghosts of Mississippi", or a hybrid of those and bits and pieces of other movies of this genre. At other times it looks like its just trying to draw from the sex appeal and cheesy interaction of 2 of its main actors, Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. As a result this movie picks up the rear in that genre's list of movies for lack of originality, and the scattered hodge podge statements it tries to make. Some of my favorite actors are wasted, either by being given cliched dialogue, over acting, or being put there merely for their brand name with no script to support their presence. If this script is considered a great adaptation of a great book, then I have no interest in reading the book. I'm sure the idea and the premise looked good on paper. But the direction doesn't guide the story with any coherence or identity of its own.Bullock is mere cheesecake and is unbelievable in her role, proving she's only worthy of b-grade "Miss Congeniality" type crud.McConaughey over acts so much (as can be said for Keifer Sutherland and others) that it can be said he balances out the under acting of Patrick McGoohan, Kevin Spacey and Donald Sutherland. Samuel L. Jackson should be ashamed of himself of not only his worst performance ever, but also easily his worst choice of movies to participate in.Even the extras in this movie are horrible. Enough can't be said about the terrible direction in this movie, equating elongated facial shots with drama to a fault, making Sergio Leone westerns look much more authentic by comparison. This is not "a powerful film." It's a powerful attempt at using a big name cast, a brand name book and a capable director to use material that they know would easily jerk the emotions of its audience, and in doing that they resort to all the cliches of this genre scattering the story line in so many directions, culminating in an over the top, pleading hunk of cheese summation scene by McConaughey that wouldn't hold water in any real court of justice. Maybe people claim greatness to this movie out of guilt, or because they haven't seen quality comparisons and classics like "Mississippis Burning," that has both a great script and fabulous acting. I don't know. All I know is it tugs from so many hokey directions it takes the final scene to remind everyone how it started. Among the top of my most over rated movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Time to Think
Grisham once said he wrote his other books, e.g., The Firm, et al., so he could afford to write important books, like this one, upon which the movie s based.Matthew McConaghey gives a fantastic performance--and why hasn't Hollywood ever--EVER--given him another part this good!Thought provoking, great acting, great story, highly recommend

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie.
I haven't seen this movie since it was on 'ON TV' back in 1980 - I still think it's a good movie and I'm just a middle aged honky.
5-0 out of 5 stars "REAL"
This movie portrays the "Cholo" life better than any movie out there. It is better than "Colors". I grew up watching this movie and I still watch it now. I recommend it to anybody who likes realistic gang movies!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I keep thinking about what could have been ....
I knew that this film was not going to be Oscar caliber, but I was a little disappointed with the broad strokes the director allowed the Mexicans in the film to be painted with.We see them as outsiders, neverdelving into their souls and emotions. The Cholos are generic and theysound like "West Side Story" rejects. But the funny thing isthat I liked this film.In the hands of a competant director, thismaterial could have been a GREAT film, but as it is, it is just a fairfilm. The score is excellent, and I wish I could find it.If you have acopy of the soundtrack, let me know! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!!
I am 26 yrs old and wasn't even thought of when this movie was made, but I love it. Betty Davis was so demure in this film. I believe that all black&white movie lovers should have this in their collection. I missed the full showing on TCM about 3 months ago and was thrilled to find out that I can purchase it online.

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD format please!
I adored this movie! After seeing it, I was compelled to read the book by Rachel Field.Bette Davis did an excellent job of portraying Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, the loving, quick-witted governess falsely accused of being associated with the notorious Praslin murder that helped to bring down the French monarchy. After reading the book and seeing the movie, I was surprised that it took the Duc so long to lose it with the Duchesse.See the movie or read the book and you'll probably agree with me.This movie was amazing and it showed me what a versatile actress Bette Davis was. This isn't her normal brand of movie.I was intrigued when I found out that it was based on a true story, that's why I read the book.My only disappointment with the movie is that it isn't on DVD yet!I really wish they'd release the DVD version of it, I'd buy it the second it came out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great...
...kind of a let-down since it's directed by Sam Mendes, responsible for the masterful "American Beauty."
5-0 out of 5 stars Father and Son
If you are a parent, especially if you have at least one son, this movie will really hit home. It's brutal; it's emotional; it's violent; and it's heart warming.
4-0 out of 5 stars Can Michael Sullivan find redemption for his sins through his son?
The bonding that awkwardly begins after a traumatic incident between the far different father Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) and Michael Sullivan Jr.(Tyler Hoechlin) makes the story achingly beautiful.

I have to agree with another review , this movie had me thinking when I was a teenager too , I loved audrey hepburn and all the cast in this film , I didnt read the book , maybe I should .
1-0 out of 5 stars Audrey 's worst film!!!
How Sheldon's wonderful novel was turned into such a bad (and very boring) movie is a mystery. Good cast (Hepburn, Mason, Schneider) wasted...Buy the book instead!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, Sexy, Mason/Gazarra Worthy Adverseries
James Mason and Ben Gazarra were still virile and energetic enough to pull it off as two middle-aged adverseries for the eternally charming Audrey Hepburn. Enjoy it for what it is, a straightforward, by-the-numbers suspense thriller with plenty of '70s fashion and atmosphere. The ending, where Hepburn must decide to believe either Mason or Gazarra, is great. Mason's 1978-79 performances in "The Boys from Brazil" and "Salem's Lot" and here made for a notable trifecta of quality acting. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn't fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn't have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb film
'A Bronx Tale' is about a boy named Calegero Anello living in the Bronx who is torn between two worlds, the world of his father (played by Robert De Niro) and the world of a local gang leader named Sonny (played by Chazz Palminteri). The viewer gets to follow Calegero or "C" from the time that he is 9 years old to the time that he is 17 years old. In the process, Calegero/C as well as the viewer learn some valuable lessons about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Touching Film
Robert De Niro's directorial debut is a great movie and very under rated. The man has proved himself a genius in the acting field and in this film shows his talent in film making.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Movie You've Never Heard of....
Yes, there is an explanation as to why this movie sells on the secondary market for more than an ounce of many precious metals. Skip Woods (writer of Swordfish)penned a nice little story about a day (Thursday to be exact) in the life of a reformed thug, and how in this one day this new life he has created for himself comes crashing down around him. The storyline is unlike any other I have watched, definitely was an ideal concept in 1998 (this should've been a strong box office draw, and probably would have if done with a major studio and bigger names).Without ruining the novelty of the story, this is worth the watch due to its high action, unexpected twists and turns and strong acting (high marks for Mickey Rourke--no one does "slimeball" quite as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome....

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than its reputation, if you have a heart...
I recall most critics trashing this film 15 years ago when it was new. I heard an especially vicious critique on NPR, of all places. Then I saw it, and liked it very much. Of course it is sentimental and manipulative, but all films are manipulative. I liked Harrison's work, and I even liked Annette Bening, which does not always happen for me. Most of us wonder whether, if we suffered a serious brain injury or a spinal cord break, if we would survive, and cope. This film shows one fictional guy facing that crisis, and becoming a better man for having lost some of his mental toughness and job skills. Those who sneer at this touching film perhaps have already lost the humane sense that Harrison Ford's character acquires through suffering.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my ABSOLUTE favorite Ford movies
This is one of the best Harrison Ford movies ever. Every time my mom and I watch it together, we cry like babies, especially at the end. It is everything you could want in a movie, with scandal, guns, and politics, but also good life lessons, heartwarming scenes, and the power of family. Buy it immediately, you won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Henry
Much over looked Harrison Ford film.

Barbra Streisand's best film as a director is helped enormously by one of Nick Nolte's finest performances. Nolte plays a football coach who is estranged from his wife (Blythe Danner) and who enters into an affair with the psychiatrist (Streisand) of his suicidal sister (Melinda Dillon). Streisand is acceptable in her star turn, but behind the camera she paces the story very well and provides lots of room for Nolte to inhabit his burdened but likable character. George Carlin is a bit token as a gay New Yorker, although Jason Gould (Streisand's son) is good as a struggling teen in desperate need of a father figure. The whole film is worth watching just to see a great moment near the end where Nolte stands on a street, a bit slump-shouldered and wearing a look of sad resolve. It's great acting at its most minimal. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In the brumes of the alcohol!
Sensible and poignant melodrama about an alcoholic. With a sumptuous reference frame, Streisand made possibly her finest masterpiece.
4-0 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING MOVIE
I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE EARLY 90S AND WAS AMAZED AT WHAT A WONDERFUL PICTURE IT IS.THE FILM WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE, BEST ACTOR FOR NICK NOTLE AND BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS FOR KATE NELIGAN - UNFORTUNATELY, MISS STRIESAND WAS NOT NOMINATED FOR BEST DIRECTOR, WHICH SURELY IS A MISFORTUNE BECAUSE IT WAS SHE WHO COAXED THESE MARVELOUS PERFORMANCES FROM THESE ACTORS.WATCH IT AND LOVE IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tide has not eroded this cinematic masterpiece
I hadn't given this movie much thought since seeing it when it came out originally in '91.I remember finding it a fascinating film at the time which even prompted me to read the book and discover the writing quality of Conroy.Unlike most such situations when I am disappointed by movie adaptations of great books, I found both genres to have their own beauty. This past weekend I was loaned a copy of Prince of Tides and I spent a leisurely 2 hours enjoying this masterpiece for a second time.Flashbacks are beautifully interspersed with real time discoveries.Characters to love, hate, envy, pity and laugh with abound. What impresses me most about this film is the impeccable way you find yourself switching from the lifestyle of the coastal south to the frenzy of New York City. All cinematic elements combine to take you back and forth in time and location as the characters experience their pasts and make new memories for the future.Nolte was brilliant.Streisand was lovely as an actress and obviously gifted as director.Blythe Danner was touching and talented as always, and the passage of time reveals the beauty both inner and outer she has bestowed on her daughter Gwyneth Paltrow.Buy this film and plan an evening of enjoyment whether you are male or female, young or old.The passage of time has done nothing to dim the quality of this film.It is as impressive now as it was originally, maybe even more so since it has stood the test of time so well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Thrillers Of All Time
I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. This movie is frightening, extremely suspenseful, revolting, and, above all, undeniably compelling. Fincher is in fine form regarding the direction of this movie, and Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman (one of the best actors of our time), Kevin Spacey, and Gwenyth Paltrow turn in exceptional performances as the main characters. This is easily one of the best films of the 90s, and any true fan of motion pictures should add this collector's edition to their DVD library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Has a Weakness....
This clever and gruesome film was released in theaters in 1995. Definitely not for the squeamish but if you can even try to peek through fingers, this movie will keep you riveted.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bodyguard took about fifteen years to get made
Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston, Waiting to Exhale) is an actress/pop star who is getting death threats as her career rises to a new level. Everybody wants to get close to her, but someone out there wants her dead. In steps legendary bodyguard Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner, Waterworld) to advise the star and her camp on how to protect Rachel. He finds out his new client is as much of a control freak as he is, and they begin to clash over how far is too far when your career and life hang in the balance. They begin to fall in love, much to their mutual surprise. Can Farmer keep Rachel alive and separate his feelings for her when it counts?
5-0 out of 5 stars Letting your guard down .....
Hmmmm .... I think the theme song says it all ... I lost "my bodyguard" too when I too jumped on a plane to California. Two different worlds can only collide for a short time.
5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!

Editorial Review

Boaz Yakin's astounding debut feature looks at the violent world of the projects through the eyes of a 12-year-old drug runner. Sean Nelson delivers a quiet but intense performance as Michael--street name Fresh--a cynical but introspective kid grown up fast and hard on the killing streets of the projects. Samuel L. Jackson costars as Fresh's estranged father, a speed chess hustler in the city park whose dispassionate philosophy--the chess board as life--becomes the film's central metaphor, as Fresh plots a brilliant, coldly brutal plan to save himself and his junkie sister from his world of drug dealers and street violence. Yakin's assured direction delivers a vividly realized world in bold, crisp images and an austere but poetic style that captures the dispassionate point of view of a heart-hardened adolescent street survivor. The excellent score by former Police-manStewart Copeland, his most haunting since Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget about Jackson. Watch it this is a very well done movie.
I picked it from the library catalog because Samuel L. Jackson is in it. I made a mistake picking it for that reason because he is a minor character. The main character is Fresh his son. Jackson is only in it for a few good but brief scenes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like a kick in the stomach
There are no fancy cinematic magic tricks going on in this film, aside from an instance of superimposed images that is so simple it almost seems like a throwback to old silent dramas. There are no choreographed gun fights, no switching film stocks to produce psychedelic effects, nothing like that. Not to say that these things cannot be used appropriately and judiciously to enhance the effect of a particular film, but "Fresh" is stripped bare, and must depend on its performances, direction,
