Editorial Review

In a time when race and religion don't separate people, but extra powers and mutated characteristics do, two longtime friends, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) part ways, only to become rivals over the issue of how much patience they should have with "normal" people. Living lives that scare most humans lacking the "X-factor" (a special power such as telekinesis), they fight over changing the general population into mutants. Xavier decides to help mutants in a special school while waiting for humanity to be more accepting, while Magneto opts to change all "normal" people into mutants in order to create a mutant-only world. Leading a group of four powerful X-Men (and women) to rescue one lost girl (the mutant Rogue, played by Anna Paquin)--and the entire population of New York--Xavier recruits a new member to their group: Logan (Hugh Jackman), better known as Wolverine, joins the team with much reluctance, only to prove very valuable to the rescue effort.

3-0 out of 5 stars I needs me some Kelsey!!!
It was a lot better than I thought it would be and has definitely raised the bar for all other Marvel movies to come,in every aspect of film making. Sure it was different in someways than the book, but it could stand alone from them and more importantly it was good. As much as I liked the cheesy 70's and 80's Marvel movies(like Dr. Strange starring Peter Wooten in the title roll, thank you very much), Marvel movies to come will have to measure up to this one. And that's a good thing because sometimes Marvel doesn't place as much emphasis on story telling quality as it does on marketing. But they made one stupendous, unforgivable error. They left out Hank McCoy,aka The Beast! Woe betide them! I'm looking forward to a sequal, and I'll really enjoy it more if it contains the only X-Man who can fight crime in his swim trunks, differentiate between Keats & Yeats, type his doctoral thesis with his toes, the thinking man's Tarzan...........The Bombastic BEAST!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great first movie rendition of a comic!
I couldn't wait for this movie to hit the theaters.Likewise, I could wait to pick up the DVD.There are only a few criticisms to make if you, like me, grew up ready the X-men comics. For one, unlike their comic book superhero characters, the women (in particular, Storm and Jean) are much too weak. While on the flip side, traditionally weak characters like the Toad are made into formidable enemies with powers they never had in the comics.Although there is a real effort to make up for that in the sequels, it stood out in this one.For another, while many of the truly evil characters in the comics are loners with their own agenda, everyone unites under the leadership of the misguided Magneto in the movie (a sad fact that is not corrected in the sequels).Other than that (there are others but I won't bore you with the details), there are the small liberties with character profiles that one should expect when any piece of literature is brought to the big screen - like Rouge and Ice Man as teenagers instead of adults.Nevertheless, overall the movie is a great one in that it is a firs of its kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FLICK
Not as good as X2, but still a great movie. I never owned the regular release of this movie, in fact I just got the "1.5" version of it like 2 weeks ago used in Hastings for like $10. Mabye the regular release was better, mabye this one is... I dont know, & since this is the one I got, I dont give a s#it either! For $10, you cant go wrong!!! ... Read more

"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" 5-0 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Is Alive!
Caveat: This is the TCM 75th anniversary edition of one film -- Frankenstein. This is NOT the legacy box set! That said -- this is a spectacular presentation of James Whale's Frankenstein remastered, fully restored and with a stereo soundtrack. And yes -- the scene where the monster drowns the little girl is back. Also back is the line where Dr. Frankenstein proclaims, "Now I know what it feels like to be God." Karloff is stunning. Colin Clive is edgy and frighteningly intense. The accompanying documentaries and trailers are fascinating, particularly the almost 2-hour feature on disc two, "Universal Horror", a retrospective of the horror films released by Universal Studios. A must for any DVD library as this is one of the greatest horror films of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd Universal Horror Masterpiece
After Bela Lugosi became a movie star playing Dracula, he was offered the role of the Frankenstein monster, but turned it down & so a other horror movie star emerged, Boris Karloff as the manufactured mistunderstood monster, truly one of the greatest horror films of all time, Karloff brings terrifying perfection to the role. A great non dialogue performance. A masterpiece of how science can be misused. If you like classic universal horror see Mary Shelley's shocking novel story in the motion picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Well, we've warned you!"
All movies are dated. Some are more dated than others, of course.A film's dated quality can be its strength as well as its weakness.Much film criticism has surrounded the primitive techniques used in 1931's "Dracula" and "Frankenstein".Lack of musical score, obvious use of studio sets, theatrical acting, pedestrian use of the camera, etc.Yet I would argue that these qualities are what make these films unique and give them a dream-like, nightmarish quality, which the later, slicker and more polished sequels lacked. The sound of the Frankenstein monster's footsteps coming down the hall before his entrance, the thumping of the dirt being thrown atop the coffin in the opening sequence, all would be lost had they been interpolated in a musical score. The same goes for "Dracula"'s scattering rats, bats and night creatures among the clacking bones in the coffins.Granted, the later "Bride of Frankenstein" brilliantly used music and a far more sophisticated film technique to unfold its story, yet it was a completely different piece of art.It was much more operatic and complex and full of irony and satire as well as horror.Whereas "Bride" gave us thrills, "Frankenstein" gave us chills.

Rutger Hauer and Kim Cattrall star in this festival of stolen plots and embarrassing dialogue. Harley Stone (Hauer) is a tough cop. The kind of cop who lives by his own rules. The kind of cop who smokes, swears, and eats junk food. The kind of cop who slams people into walls to drive home a conversational point. 4-0 out of 5 stars The people selling this movie are a bunch of crooks!
This is a good movie. One of Rutger's best, but there ISN'T a movie out there that I would pay over 20$ bucks for, if I was a collector or not.The people on here selling this movie are just trying to make a fast buck and should be shot in the head. This movie will be on sale in the public market once again some day. When you see it at Walmart for 14$ bucks, you're really gonna kick yourself...don't let these theives steal your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best!
If you are a Rutger Hauer fan like I am, then you will love this movie!
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Action for Hauer Fans
Fans of movies like Dolph Lundgren's "I Come in Peace" or Rutger Hauer fans will want to catch this one. Plenty of action, decent acting, some comedy, and fairly decent story and music. When the city becomes flooded and bodies that are badly ripped up start showing up, Unorthodox detective Harley Stone is called in to investigate the cause. Only two problems, he has to have a partner on the case played by Neil Duncan, which he doesn't want, and the killer is an alien. Add in a delectable girlfriend played by Kim Cattrall and you have a nice afternoon matinee. This may not have the depth of movies he has done like "Blade Runner", but it sure is more fun like "Wedlock" or "Blind Fury". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Funny
When I watch MST3K, I'm always struck by how much I would rather be watching ANY of the movies it ridicules, than watching it ridicule them. There's nothing I find more pathetic than people (generally those incapable of creating any significant works of their own) sneering at the creations of others... often simply because those creations are perhaps not of the first rank in some technical way. Green Slime, despite the jeers of the jaded, is really a decent movie on its own terms, that displays a courage that rises far above its obviously limited budget, and which deserves a far more respectful reception. Sure, this is "merely" space opera... but space opera gleefully reduced to the archetypal essentials: the square-jawed hero, the beautiful (but capable) heroine, the melodramatic conflict between former buddies... and, of course, the hideous (and, yes, rubbery) green monster to stir it all up. Turn off your superior, hyper-critical faculties for a few minutes, and you'll find nothing here that isn't given great reverence in productions like Star Trek (especially TOS). Yes, the production values are on the "cheesy" side... but the film overcomes that trivial limitation by its sheer gusto. (Wonderfully exemplified by the effervescent title song.) This is a movie that isn't afraid to do what it does, and it's enormously enjoyable because of that. Don't be fooled into missing the fun by those who simply don't get it, and would rather scoff at something they don't understand. I give it a well-earned 3 stars: a fine effort in a genre that clearly won't appeal to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars "the green slime" is just what the doctor ordered for cheesey sci-fi fun
this is the story of a comit about to strike the earth. to save mankind the space force sends wax figure robert horton(star of t.v,'s wagon train, and looking just like a wax figure ,not one hair out of place and a face that looks like it would crack if he smiled to much) into space to gamma 3 space station to command a group to blow up the comit. of corse the station is commanded by old best friend now enemy richard jeckel. after they blow up the comit and get back to gamma 3 the monster of the title comes into play.
5-0 out of 5 stars green slime your time away
this movie isn't as bad as somepeople would have you belive!! Sure the effects are bad, sure the acting is "uggg", and sure the leading man looks like a wax figure, but if you let it this movie is a blast to watch. The theme song is priceless and worth the price alone. turn off your mind and let it "slime" you!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars X2 is an awesome film!
With dazzling special effects, spectacular battles, touching romance and sacrafice, and an even edgier Wolverine, X2: X-Men United is even better than the original! The second installment of the X-Men Trilogy, United proves to be a fantastic addition to the series, as well as a great action film on its own!
5-0 out of 5 stars X-MAN-- SO COOOOL
X-man is my favorite movie. The characters are Wolverine/Iceman/and Flameman. It takes place in the White House. It takes place in the present.I like the movie for the fighting. One reason I like it is the way X-Man sticks knives out of his hands.I like the way they fight.I think kids 8 and up would like the movie because of thier powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than The First!
X-Men fans, comic book fans, action movie fans, and all-around good movie fans, SEE THIS MOVIE!The first movie set the bar high, but this movie tops it.Right from the beginning you know you are in for a real treat.I was spellbound the first time I watched it, and have watched it again and again since. This is a title that is worth owning, as are the other 2 X-Men movies (both 1 and 3).Once again Hugh Jackman pulls off playing Wolverine impeccably, and the other characters deliver too.If you are a comic book fan or an action movie fan, getting the X-Men trilogy is a no-brainer.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Biollante!
This is the sequel to Godzilla 1985. The movie is entertaining even if Godzilla is fighting a giant rose monster. It turns into a Godzilla like plant later in the movie and really gives Godzilla a beating! Overall the movie is good, not boring; the only thing wrong with it is that sometimes they call Godzilla "Godziller" which is a little annoying

5-0 out of 5 stars Plant vs. Lizard!!!!!! Who will win?
The answer to the title question is Biollante (plant). A dr. creates a giant plant using Godzilla's cells. Like every other Godzilla movie, Godzilla battles Biollante. Biollante battles Godzilla in his Rose form. Godzilla beats Biollante and Biollante seems to die (yeah right). Godzilla does some damage and about thirty minutes later Godzilla battles Biollante final form. They have a pretty good fight, but in the end, Biollante forces Godzilla to retreat from battle. Biollante then turns into cells and they go up into space. It is a direct sequel from Godzilla 1985. I like this movie alot. I wish it were out on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Single DVD?
First Laserdiscs disappeared. Then VHS tapes disappeared. Now DVDs are disappearing. I like this film. It is one of the great science fiction films of all time. I would like to get it with its own cover and artwork. Now you have to get it as a double feature with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS! Nothing wrong with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, but I just want THEM! by itself. What gives!
5-0 out of 5 stars Them
I highly recommend this move. Great Old black & white SciFi movie of the 50's Makes you feel like your at the drive inn again. This was no B rated film @ the time. The original quality is great and the tranfer to DVD is not lost. This movie was ahead of it's time being filmed in 3D but sorry folks you don't get the 3D effect from the disk. So if you like giant monsters attacking, then this is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
It's great to finally see this fifties classic on DVD. I'm not sure what some reviewers were talking about...this is, in my opinion, a very CRISP transfer, the best version of the film I've ever seen. Perhaps their sets need adjusting.

this is one of the good old sci fi horror movies, ididnt realize that seth green was in it till years after seeing the ending of it on sci fi. i may buy this when i get some money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent 1950's style sci-fi.
I just watched Ticks again, this time with my daughter, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.It has a USA rating of "R", and although I think it is slightly inappropriate for kids under 15 or so, I took the risk and let my 13 year old watch it without feeling too uncomfortable. The gratituous addition of sexual suggestion and rough language is a problem with so many modern movies that I am beginning to think that they deliberately try get an "R" rating just to pump the ticket sales.
4-0 out of 5 stars GET TICKED OFF
TICKS is a creepy crawly extravaganza with amazingly good creature effects for an obvious low budget movie. The plot's fairly simple:a marijuana farmer, played with devilish glee by Clint Howard, is using herbal steroids to increase his marijuana output. Some of the steroidal juice however manages to infest a tick larva and soon all the ticks are growing bigger and bigger, nastier and nastier.Enter a group of troubled teens, led by Rosalind Allen and Peter Scolari, who are off for a camping adventure right near the infested area.Soon the ticks are running around chomping on everyone.Read more

I don't know why but I love this movie, I recommend if you haven't seen this movie, have a couple beers and clean your guns while watching.

3-0 out of 5 stars Heston and his gun
I thought this was a good movie when I saw it at the theater when I was a kid. It's not bad considering how long ago it was made but this viewing as an adult I see it's a B movie. Still it's fun watching Charleston Heston shooting and making quips while trying to survive in a nightmarish world. I think this was one of the first movies where you see an interacial couple. American culture was changing slowly and I'm sure this raised a few eyebrows.
3-0 out of 5 stars "The Omega Man" in light of Hurricane Katrina
This movie, although somewhat hokey, is a personal favorite of mine as it stars Charlton Heston and, as an added bonus, features the destruction of the world. How cool is that?!

You can chalk it up to good timing and a heavy dose of video-game synergy, but this 1990 hit remains the box-office champ of independent films, with a total gross of $135 million. Of course the Turtles began as a phenomenally successful Nintendo video game, so it was a given that the movie would be a hit with its target audience of rabid young video addicts. This is what comic books fans call "the origin story," in which we learn how a foursome of small turtles were mutated by a green radioactive goo and turned into human-sized turtle crime fighters. Their large rodent mentor, Splinter, teaches them to master the martial arts. They're also gifted pop musicians, by the way (think of them as amphibious Spice Guys), so they can rock the house while they're cracking a crime wave with the help of their cute friend and television reporter April O'Neil (Judith Hoag). The script is terrible, of course, but countless millions of children don't seem to care, as long as the Turtles keep ordering pizza and dispensing their wisecracking brand of justice. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cowabunga Dudes! TMNT is a classic!
Like many kids who were around in the late 80's/early 90's, I LOVE The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I watched the saturday morning cartoon that aired on CBS, my brother and I played the TMNT video games on NES(Remember the very first one? I could play it 'til my thumbs bleed!) and Super Nintendo, my brother and I collected the TMNT action figures, and watched our VHS copies of the first two TMNT films so many times, that they wore out.

Why isn't this on DVD yet???
5-0 out of 5 stars Why did REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 2 have to be so bad?
Well basiclly this is Mothra the giant moth`s first appearence. Anyway, the story is that a giant catterpiller named Mothr rampages Tokyo to find two tiny twin fairies. When going on foot geets too hard, she turn into a giant moth and takes to the air. Why is there a giant plant in the movie? Who knows, who cares. Anyway I definetely recomend MOTHRA to Toho monster fans. I also recomend anyone who reads my review not to watch REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 2, which invlolves a hairy thing that poops out rings when he gets scared, acid spitting starfish, a silly Fairy Mothra and the goofy looking Garu-Garu 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chilling and creepy!
Even by today's horror movie standards, this first black and white film version of H.G. Wells' "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" can be considered a worthy frightfest!Charles Laughton's portrayal of Dr. Moreau is devilishly evil and far superior to Burt Lancaster's in 1977 (that was a good version, though) and Marlon Brando's in 1996 (Oh, man, that version really sucked!).

The film has so many different things to offer a sci-fi buff like myself, top notch work by genius Ray Harryhausen, wonderful on-location photography in the beautiful Eternal City Rome, and one of the best monster creations of the entire 1950's decade in the famed "Ymir" from Venus. Indeed "monster" is not really an appropiate title in this case for this visitor from beyond the stars is a creature very much in the "King Kong" mode of being a sympathetic victim of man's lack of care and understanding in bringing him out of his own environment into a strange new world he does not understand.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Horrible movie but great for MST3K fans!!!
Bert. L Gordon's "The Amazing Colossal Man" is a cheap, americansci-fi movie centering on the repercussion a military manfaces after being exposed to radiation, namely he cant stop
3-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to waste part of a rainy day
I first saw this movie when I was a kid, and it's cheesiness still holds true today. The acting is more hammy than a deli sandwich, and the "special" effects are great (I love the giant syringe!) The part when our hero walks through Vegas is great, and I still laugh at the look on his face when he sees the giant high heel (very kinky). If you are looking for something scary to watch, this isn't it. It's sequel, "War of the Colossal Beast" reminded me a little of the movie "Cyclops" (that one was scary...when I was 7) and isn't as much fun as this one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Top notch 50's sci fi!
I have always loved this old cheesy film! The special effects may be a little shakey, and most of the acting a little stiff, but Glenn Langan, in the title role as the colossal man, gives a great, emotional performance, and sympathy for his character is what really makes the movie work. An absolute classic, and should always be viewed as a double feature with the superior sequel, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This moody little sci-fi classic has it all over the competition when it comes to possessed tykes with telekinetic powers. Midwich's mysteriously hatched brood bores into the subconscious both with their eyes and with their creepy Hitler Youth-like presence. Based on John Wyndham's 1957 novel Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal British sci-fi thriller
Wolf Rilla's 1960 production of "Village of the Damned" was a cinematic jewel from a bygone era.A combination of a well conceived plot, a professional cast and creative direction was sufficient to evoke fear and terror without the use of special effects and buckets of stage blood.
5-0 out of 5 stars Village of the Damned~ Wolf Rilla
I was lying and watching tcm one evening and this movie came on. I was skeptical since many horror movies have bad plots, no character development and terrible acting ability. This movie on the other hand had adequate ability in all three categories. This is a very messed up movie regarding the telecenetic powers of a group of blonde/blue eyed children living in England. Thier behavior is unsettling and how they act towards other is truly barbaric. It shows that there is more to being human then just intelect and that being human means showing empathy, compasion and love, something all these children lack judging from their actions. I like the fact that there is not much blood and the sparse special effects make it even more "realistic" and not silly or just plain stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb SF classic
Don't even think about watching John Carpenter's ill-advised 1995 remake of this brilliant science fiction film. The 1960 original is subtle, tightly scripted, and superbly plotted.Read more
