5-0 out of 5 stars VERY MOVING AND TOUCHING BIOGRAPHY!!
AS WITH GANDHI, THIS IS A VERY MOVING MOVIE EXPERIENCE!
5-0 out of 5 stars another way of taking a stand
I watched this movie again today, for at least the 5th time, and, as always, it quickly brought tears to my eyes. This film describes how an individual can allow himself to be transformed by events into taking a firm, courageous stand in the face of those who desire to use whatever force is necessary to retain their position of privilege. If this were an American film, the protagonist might go out a purchase a .45, and would then proceed to seek and destroy his oppressors. Romero used a different approach - he employed his spiritual / moral authority. There is a particular scene in "Romero" that vividly portrays his creative use of spiritual power. After he is kicked out of a church by the military, Romero & his orderly drive away and return with Romero's vestments (the robes he uses to perform the mass). Romero puts on his robes and then he and his orderly begin a slow, deliberate march towards the church. A crowd of townspeople see what Romero is doing, and several fall into line behind him. This is all spontaneous but quite deliberate, and, with Romero at the lead, they approach the church door, where a soldier waits, and as they approach the soldier lifts his gun and shouts at them to stop. Romero continues past the soldier, who drops his gun, and he and the townspeople re-take the church.

3-0 out of 5 stars Of Historic Importance..But...Longwinded
This review refers to "Windtalkers" DVD
2-0 out of 5 stars Who was the movie more focused on?
As a nephew of a Navajo Code Talker, I would like to express my thoughts on WINDTALKERS.
3-0 out of 5 stars Life of the Navajo Code Talkers
This film was okay but they should have gone more on how the code talkers operated to get the Japanese target destroyed. There were too many war cliches in this film like when Sgt. Enders picked up wounded Pvt. Ben Yahzee amid gunfire from heavily trained Japanese rifleman. The Big Texas Marine who operated the BAR seemed like a Saturday Morning Cartoon Character. There was racism like the Zoot Suit Riots in LA. But the Marines would have respected their Navajo Radio Operater like a brother since their lives depended on him and the Navy Corpsman. I thought John Woo (who mostly make hardboiled-gun battle action movies) was the wrong person to direct this film. Hopefully the new Band of Brothers sequel based on the Pacific Theater and the move based on the book "Flags of our Father" that are be made by Steven Spielburg, Tom Hanks, and Clint Eastwood will be good. ... Editorial Review

Penny Marshall directed this well-intentioned drama-comedy about a middle-aged advertising executive (Danny DeVito) whose heart has never been in his work. Fired for incompetence, DeVito's character is on the skids; but then comes an unusual job offer: Teach a bunch of boot-camp army recruits to read and think. The first-time teacher leads the uniformed men and women to an appreciation of Shakespeare, but he still has to grapple with his own problems with commitment and responsibility. Watching this film is like staring at a pool of broken eggs that never quite becomes an omelet. The story's promise is always there, but the satisfaction never quite comes.Still, there are some nice moments, and the whole thing works better on video than it did in the theaters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Shakespearian Way To Look...
This movie is truly a good way to look at how Shakespear can help even bottom of the barrel Army recruits can grow and become a true Band of Brothers and Sisters. This movie also shows how one can find a new meaning in life if one just opens their mind to new possiblities.
1-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource
I teach in an inner-city middle school. I have used this film for many years in connection with an article on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to demonstrate that our decisions in life are made based on our perceived needs. The course I teach is preparing low income/poverty level students for going to college and breaking the cycle of meager education and low income.Renaissance Man has multiple messages and valuable lessons - AND a cool introduction to Shakespeare. There is no sex, no nudity, no violence. The "R" rating comes from a bit of profanity (including the "F" word) but the profanity is lower frequency than what I hear in the hallway in any given passing period.

5-0 out of 5 stars unique historical spy film
This is one of the few William Holden films I completely enjoy. His lovers-parting dialogue with Lili Palmer is a complete cliche, but the two stars deliver the lines with poignancy. The protagonist's "pragmatic" business ethic contains enough candid tarnish to bring unique dimensions to Holden's performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Holden shows his star power
William Holden plays Erik Erickson, an American ex-patriot living in Stockholm.WWII has just begun.Erickson is an oil trader and as Sweden was neutral, he didn't care where the oil came from. This gives Erickson access to many German cities. He is blackmailed by British Agents and forced to spy for them. After seeing the brutal treatment of some Jewish prisoners, he goes from reluctant spy to eager spy.He proposes to build a refinery in Germany. This allows him to cultivate important relationships and recruit his own network. As the Nazi's take firmer control, his job becomes more risky.Eventually, he is uncovered and must escape back to Sweden.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story, well made film.
No need to rehash the story -- the other reviews here do that quite nicely. The film is powerful in an understated way, made particularly compelling thanks to excellent location work in many of the real locations, and of course, the suspenseful subject matter.Everything is well crafted, with lots of fascinating detail. My only minus was that I felt it was a bit heavy on narration.Nevertheless, the film will keep you riveted for 140 minutes, which can't be said for many current films.Sadly, the DVD contains no bonus features, which is why I couldn't give the product 5 stars. It would have been great to have a commentary about the real events, or even a little 10 minute featurette.Regardless, it's a worthy addition to your DVD library. ... Product arrived timely, and in perfectcondition. I would recommend this seller to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars realistic history
the movie captures the defeat of the British forces by the Zulu in an understandable and captivating narrative. I would have liked more focus on the causes of the battle, how each character contributed to the battle, and the battle itself, but the movie was extremely interesting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does this really compare to the 1980s masterpiece?
I was a young boy when the 1980's version appeared on national television to the likes of million of viewers.Back then the only voice of reason I had to base any realism off of was my late father James! He too was a big fan of Henry Cele, the actor who played the on screen role of Chaka king of the Zulus! That movie had so much starpower and drama. I have not watched this movie, but I will let the public know what I really thing of this version.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different slice of the biggest war of all time...
For every guy who saw combat in World War II, there were eight to ten men in uniform who did not: these were the rear guard or stateside clerks, supply officers, cargo loaders, pencil-pushers, etc., the men who delivered the food and the guns and the equipment to the fighters. "Mr. Roberts" began as a stage play, but was beautifully expanded to wide-screen, perfectly cast, and excellently directed. From boredom to tedium and back, this crew moves cargo around the Pacific, but has no chance at heroism. Henry Fonda's title character engages in combat with his captain when he sticks up for the rights of his men, and James Cagney fights back but fights dirty. The tone of this long film is mostly comic, until the end, but it is a tribute to all those who served their country in the war without medals, or glamor, or even much danger. Their enemies were military bureaucracies...our own. Yet their service deserves respect, and "Mr. Roberts" gives that to them. It is a classic from the 1950's which has a few dated elements, but you can't help falling in love with this crew and rooting for all of them. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Class-conflict aboard
Goethe once said that nothing is harder to endure than a succession of holidays. Mr. Roberts (Henry Fonda) could spend the waning days of WWII basking in the sun, enjoying the view of showering nurses or helping the enterprising ensign Pulver( Jack Lemmon who won a deserved oscar) in his attempts to seduce them. And if a lush blonde thirsts for a swig of scotch even the ship's doctor distinguishes himself as adulterator: "Coke for color...iodine for taste...hair tonic for age...". First-class honors are in store: "Our captain's palm tree, our trophy for superior achievement for delivering more tooth paste and toilet paper than any other navy cargo ship".
5-0 out of 5 stars Mr Roberts A Pleaser Worthy of Owning
While in college in 1949, I had the pleasure of seeing Henry Fonda perform the role of Mr. Roberts on stage on Broadway in New York. This movie is a hilarious followup of the stage presentation. It is one that can be seen over and over and stlll remain as fresh as viewing it for the first time. Although the story is set in the waning stages of the Pacific War, this is vintage comedy that can be enjoyed by all today.I strongly recommend it for everybody. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars patterned after book.
I bought this video because it appeared to be based on the book UP PERISCOPE writen by Robb White. I bought the book in about 1961 in grade school. I loved the book and read it several times. The movie has the same characters, Kenn Braden, Skipper Stevensen, Pat Malone, Si, etc. It roughly followed the book, except there was a big difference in one outcome. To be honest, I liked the book more, but I really enjoyed the movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had not read that book and tried to follow the two plots. It was a good movie, but, like the one goat said to the other goat as they were eating the film from a movie "I liked the book better!" Robb White also wrote a book called SECRET SEA, which I enjoyed almost as much as UP PERISCOPE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Submarine Film
It seemed that ever since the release of 1957's THE ENEMY BELOW, World War II submarine movies enjoyed great popularity during the late 50s. This is one of the better ones directed by Gordon Douglas with stalwart James Garner and cautious Edmond O'Brien. The scenes around the Japanese held island are suspenseful and well filmed by Carl Guthrie. Richard Landau's screenplay is pretty faithful to the novel by Robb White. It also features Edd Byrnes, Alan Hale Jr. and one of my favorite actors Warren Oates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth watching over.
Edmond O'Brien has a reputation for being so cautious that some of the crew thinks that equates to chicken. James Garner (Lt. Ken Braden) is about to test that caution with his life. Lt. Braden has a mission that is bordering on endangering the SUB. The bulk of the movie is the stress and interaction between the commander and LT and the crew that thinks the commander is chicken. You may have heard the story before but this is a very good version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars comes around again...
story line of the film is the early 1960's in vietnam, when the u.s. presence was still an advisory one. a lowkey budget enhances the story w/o the distracting flash and bang of special effects. the subtext of the movie is that as with the greeks of thermopylae from which the title is taken, the american military had as much to fear from its allies and leadership as they did from the enemy, a story line thousands of years old and unfortunatley just as relevant today. despite ones view of politics, an excellent film of the professional soldier if not the obedient one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie that couldhave been a classic .
This is a well acted movie with a good story line . Burt Lancaster does a great job . My favorite part is Lancaster telling the story of how he fell from grace as a generals aidand ended up in Vietnam .As others have stated the production does have a "made for TV feel" to it which is a shame.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good movie, production quality lacking
First, the bad part. The production quality of this movie is more like a "movie of the week" from the same era (late '70s).It' possible that the DVD transfer may also be a bit to blame. There are no DVD extras like we would see from more recent movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Someone Finally Got it Right....
I am 57 years old.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bring it to DVD already!!!
84 Charlie Mopic is one of the greatest movies about the war in Vietnam ever filmed. As a Vietnam War scholar and enthusiast, I must rank this up there with such Vietnam classics as Platoon, Full metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now. The way Duncan teaches us the "lessons learned" by the American combat soldier in Vietnam is unprecidented. He wanted the film to have a certain documentary feel to it and he accomplishes this terrifically. Not only does the viewer witness the brutality of war through the eyes of the Grunt, we actually get a terrific story, great acting and to top it all off, we actually learn something that earlier Vietnam films just don't get accross. I would highly recommend this film to any young person studying America's involvement in the Vietnam war who wants to learn the details of what the soldier actually experienced in the field, and, anyone who is a history buff at all. This is not only a great Vietnam War film, but is a great film period. Why it has not been released on DVD in America yet is beyond me, it certainly deserves it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not THAT close...
84 Charlie Mopic (USA 1989), directed by Patrick Duncan, is a Vietnam War film directed by a Vietnam veteran. Yet Duncan typecasts both race and culture-in this Vietnam film, both the Vietnamese and each leading characters are stereotyped. The absence of the Vietnamese is a common occurrence through modern Vietnam War films, according to David Desser's article, "Charlie Don't Surf".Also, each character is stereotyped to a similar subculture of the 1969 era, including an angry, militant black man, a racist, southern white man, and an adolescent with only drugs on his mind. 84 Charlie Mopic comes closer than The Green Berets or China Gate to being close to reality of the Vietnam conflict, but it still is not completely historically accurate. ... David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak's sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequently filled with adoring close-ups of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean's gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of Russia, the house in the country taken over by ice; these are re-created with Lean's unerring sense of grandness. The movie is so lush and so long that it becomes an irresistible wallow, even when logic suffers--like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD for an Amazing movie
It was more than 16 years since I watched Dr. Zhivago on a Betamax.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Hollywood's Great Epic Films
DR. ZHIVAGO was one of the last great epic films produced by Hollywood. In the 1950's and 60's, a string of films were produced that resembled closely resembled grand opera without music: the casts were large, the stories intricate, and the settings spectacular. Some were great successes such as BEN HUR. Others are notable disasters, with CLEOPATRA perhaps being the best known example. DR. ZHIVAGO may be the most enduring of these epic films. It's based on a novel by Boris Pasternak that was banned in the USSR which only added to the fascination of audiences in the United States. The film boasts of an all star cast. It has one of the most beloved musical scores. It seems that no expense was spared in the filming. It was also a bit shocking for some American audiences in terms of material. Few American films in the early 1960's dealt with a man who loved two women with love scenes to boot! Of course it would be tame and perhaps too simplistic fare for an audience of today, but it was daring at the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epic
A powerful, sweeping movie that makes a character out of the Russian landscape, Doctor Zhivago is about a man broken by the times he inhabits.Set around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution we're introduced to our main players - Zhivago, the good doctor; Tonya, the faithful wife; and Lara, the beauty who steals men's hearts. The three and a half hour run time allows plenty of room for side plots, but the main tale is of Zhivago's path crossing with Lara on several occasions - through chance, through war, and through communist desperation - and how his marital fidelity is eventually defeated.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Top Gun" of its day!
A film that functions both as the "Top Gun" of its day and as a tribute to the unsung heroes of Aviation medicine, the "Flight Surgeons". This film will be greatly enjoyed by those interested in World War II era fighter planes. The brilliant color footage of U.S. Navy planes in action just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is outstanding and the camera actually takes you into the cockpits with the pilots. Errol Flynn plays a Navy surgeon who performs a risky, and unsuccessful operation on a critically injured pilot and is unfairly blamed by fellow Navy pilots for the man's death. The pilot blacked out at high elevation while performing a training exercise, a fate not uncommon in those days. This event inspires Flynn, a Harvard trained surgeon, to study the effects of altitude on pilots, even using himself as a guinea pig. Of course there is the requisite love interest and ensuing conflict but they're merely fluff. Dive bomber puts you at Pearl Harbor just prior to its destruction. It puts you on the U.S.S. Saratoga, the aircraft carrier that would meet a similar fate early on in the war. From a historical perspective, this film is essential viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pre-WWII Navy
Title is a bit misleading as this is not an action movie, nor is is about dive bombers in particular. However, unlike too many of the almost unbelievable pre-WWII U.S.Navy movies with their silly plots and inappropriate characters, this movie is relatively good and is definitely more information driven --- though a bit low tech by today's expectations.Gives an interesting, though Hollywood-esque, picture of the kinds of problems that military aviation medicine had to address during that time period.Abolutely great shots of some vintage naval aircraft and the aerial photography is good. My only major complaint is the way the main enlisted characters are portrayed as clownish idiots, but that's nothing new for a Hollywood movie that coincentrates on officers. Those dim-witted Pharmacist Mates (now = Hospital Corpsman) could not have been anywhere true to life considering their petty offier status and and their actual real life responsibilities. This is especially true considering the marvelous record of courage and skill that Navy corpsman achieved with the Navy and Marine Corps just a few years later during WWII.It seems like Spig Wead's sailors frequently come off as less polished than they probably really were.Perhaps it's because he was an officer and never a lot spent real time with them --- despite, as a former pilot, his day to day, life and death, dependence on their mechanical and troubleshooting skills.Overall, a pretty good movie which over the years will allow future gernerations to get a glimse of one aspect of pre-WWII era naval aviation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Technicolor Past
The story is typical pre second World War let's show off the Navy. The greatness is in the photogrophy. If you want to see what San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island looked like prior to the war, this is your picture. The aerial photography is beautiful, especially a shot of the Hotel Del Coronado circa 1940. When I see this film my thoughts seem to dweal on the Navy people who appear as extras in this film. How many went on to serve and give up their lives in the coming years? We where flying biplanes and Japan and Germany were flying ME 109's and Zero's.Read more

"I think of you, my dearest, as a distant promise of beauty untouched by the world-a promise to be reached in spite of the terror and ugliness around me.If I never see you again, my last thought will be that I had fought for you and lost-but I had fought."So reads a letter penned by a British officer on the Italian front, in the 1945 movie "Love Letters."The story was based on a little-known novel by an obscure author, Chris Massie. The screenplay was written by Ayn Rand.5-0 out of 5 stars FOR THE TRUE ROMANTICS!
This was Jones' third major film and she is ethereal and breathtaking! She is starred with Cotten who would be co-starred with her more than any other leading man and they do make a fine team!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent film of artistic and historic importance
I would say that this film is a grand mixture of exotic and natural beauty and complexity. The complexity is multifaceted; the complexity of character development, the complexity of an unfolding plot, and the complexity of changing world politics.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Days of the French Empire
French Vietnam or Indochine in its last days through the eyes of an French plantation owner. Elaine is the adult daughter of the original owner who maintains its lush riches amidst the eventual collapse of the French colony. Living a society life in Saigon with her adopted Vietnamese daughter Camille, Elaine's wealthy and luxurious life is one of inert emotional satisfaction. It changes when she falls hard for a young Naval officer and vies for his affections with Camille. A love triangle emerges and gives rise to a folk legend when Camille refuses to let her love die. A slow moving but deep film about the end of France's glory on Vietnam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Depiction of an Era Gone Forever
"Your Indochine is no more" replied Camille ... the released prisoner, Communist fugitive, and adopted daughter of Eliane, her mother and wealthy rubber plantation owner. Eliane had gone to the prison to rescue her daughter and try to retrieve their old lifestyle but it had died along with the political changes and rebellions against the French colonialists. Camille had been a spoiled rich young girl. She escaped a traditional Indochinese betrothal and marriage to unwittingly participate in an underground Communist movement, while trying to locate Jean- Baptiste, the French Naval officer with whom she fell in love. The film is haunting and beautiful as it depicts a historical era from the 1930s to mid 1955. The upper class French colonial lifestyle is shown in all its opulence. French ex-patriots gather for social events and celebrations while the Indochinese are second-class citizens doing the back-breaking labor in the fields. The educated Indochinese young people go to Paris for education at Universities. There they develop a taste for freedom and rebelllion, as they understand the exploitation of their country ...

3-0 out of 5 stars a curiosity piece
The main interest in this film is to see the three renowned Barrymore siblings act together, and though it is rather stiff and heavy handed, ultra melodramatic, and the direction often looks "staged", as if it were a play rather than a film, it also has lavish sets and costumes, and some history on the side.
4-0 out of 5 stars THE THREE BARRYMORES - TOGETHER.
This is the only sound film in which the three legendary Barrymore siblings ever appeared together. Never considered a dynamic classic, it nevertheless gives viewers a glimpse of America's Royal Family of the Theatre at work. In 1913 Russia, Czar Nicholai Alexander and Czarina Alexandra opulently celebrate 3OO years of the Romanoff dynasty, unaware that their empire is crumbling down all around them....The working title for this film was simply RASPUTIN. Although Charles MacArthur is solely credited for the dialogue, Lenore Coffee, Mercedes de Acosta & John Meehan were all originally involved with the screenplay. The film took 17 weeks to film: both John and Ethel earned $1OO,OOO apiece, Lionel's salary was $4,OOO a week (!). Princess Irina Romanoff Youssoupoff - who was the model for Princess Natasha in this film - filed a damage suit against M-G-M in 1933. She was awarded a hefty quarter million dollars. Now for a REAL piece of trivia: this was NOT the three Barrymore's only film together. They appeared in a 1917 silent allegorical film entitled NATIONAL RED CROSS PAGEANT - the purpose of which was to raise money for the Red Cross during WWI. ...
