4-0 out of 5 stars Good but maybe a little too realistic
The acting is convincing and the script is excellent. Why only 4 stars?
5-0 out of 5 stars William Craig's Book on Stalingrad from 1973 brought to life
A central statue display of Children dancing around a Maypole with a Crocodile leering at them while buildings burn after the bombing of a railroad yard in Stalingrad. That was the picture on the original cover of the famous book produced by William Craig that this film used as a resource. It makes an impression immediately as to what nightmares this battle was all about and the film does deliver that impression just as well. I was haunted by the stories in Mr. Craig's book when I first became acquainted with the work in 1980. You can feel the atmosphere in this film. It is very Stalinist in the deep browns, blacks and fiery red of war. As Al Stewart said in his famous song "Roads to Moscow": "and the pale sun of October whispers the Snow will soon be coming..and I wonder when I'll be home again and the morning answers 'never' and the evening sighs and the steely russian skies go on ...forever". So you can imagine how I felt as I sat in the audience for the first showing of this movie. When it was over, the audience sat there...in stunned silence at what had been shown and no one left the theatre as the credits rolled to the end. It was as if everyone could not quite take in all that was given in this movie. It did not fail in trying to tell the personal tales that Craig spoke about, but it tended to center on a few individuals (real people, in most cases, but somewhat romanticized) yet, it does convey a certain sense of the misery of fighting in the city. The director made a few changes in the fates of individuals, added a political officer in the mix to good effect and generally did a good job. A few scenes from the original have been CUT. One in the meeting with Nikita K of political officers where one wets his pants and another when Ed Harris (as Maj. Konig, an Oscar worthy performance!) is sitting in the train and the camera focuses on terribly wounded Germans in another train, stacked like cattle ready to head in the opposite direction, staring at him in a luxurious train car alone is a bit longer before he pulls the curtain down so that he don't have to look at them. The film decends into a personal duel between Harris and Jude Law playing the hero Vassily Zaitzev, two snipers of note. The film misses on other heroes like General Vassili Chuikov or Colonel Ivan Lyudnikov, a division commander who defended the Barrikady factory against the German Pioneer unit. 15 year old Sacha Fillipov was indeed hanged for espionage, but this too was romanticized for effect. I have nothing against it. It is still an effective picture. Not perfect for a History scholar but the film produces the intended result. The truth is that most Americans were unaware of the Russian fight at Stalingrad, only Harrison Salisbury, a reporter for the NY Times, wrote and reported during the war about Soviet fighting that later made for effective books that he wrote as an afterthought. It is still good and makes for an entertaining semi-historical lesson.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Recent Movie on Events of the Eastern Front of World War II
As you may have read, this movie covers events from the Battle of Stalingrad 1942, which was the turning point of the war against Nazi Germany. This was a brutal battle during a harsh winter and the casualties were horrific.Brutalities occurred from both sides fighting the battle, the Nazi's, which are well known, and the Soviets, the brutalities of which are alarmingly little known.Considering the library shelves full of the atrocities committed by the Soviets, there remains a dichotomy on the coverage committed by both of these totalitarian regimes. An acknowledgment of the nature of the Soviet Union will be when there's an equivalent Schindler's List Hollywood movie, heaped with loads of awards, and broadcast on network TV without commercial interruption. That day may be a long time off, or may never occur, so there only exist whatever rare movies occur on it.There are a few telling statements here and there, Bob Hoskins as Krushchev, the Communist political leader in the battle, asks another soldier what he thinks can be done to motivate the Soviet soldiers, and he replies threaten their families, to which Krushchev lets out a "pfthh, of course we already tried that!".This is a realistic comment on the mentality of the Russians who killed thousands of their own troops in disciplinary actions. There's a comment on the `political correctness' of the movie. It's the other way around, politically correct would be to say how great the Russians were in WWII.The fact that this Hollywood movie has been released and is un-politically correct is what's surprising, and is why you should view such a rarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The proper way to make a documentary....
This is the way a great documentary is supposed to be made. This film came at a time when documentaries were few and far between, it remains riveting for every minute of its 251 minute length. It succeeds by telling a coherent story as well as an enthralling one. Most documentaries these days throw everything at you (in a hasty, sloppy manner), and load up their films with endless "talking head" shots. Then when they're criticised for it, they come up with the usual adage "it's up to the viewer to decide.". While the ultimate judge is the viewer, this is not a reason for a "cut and paste" approach to the film. This approach removes the narrative flow from many recent documentaries. This film tells its story so well and brilliantly, like a grand novel, and illuminates you on the Vichy government, and how it was really like to live and how complicated it is to live under an occupation. There are some historians here and there, but the film deals mainly with those who lived and fought the Nazis, those with the most at stake. That's one of the reasons the film is so riveting. It comes across as human, something many documetaries miss entirely. It's a great film. Its length means nothing, because you're never bored.A must...
5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar History.
Never in my life have I seen a film dedicated to the subject of Vichy France. I had long read about it but knew very little about the official pronouncements of the collaborationist government. I assumed that The Sorrow and the Pity was strictly a documentary about the French resistance, but was pleasantly surprised by its depth. It describes the Vichy of Petain and Laval quite thoroughly. You may recognize some of Ophuls' interviewees from The World at War (such as Edward Spears), but the stand out individual here was the fellow who volunteered for the SS. I assume he served in the Charlemagne outfit. Frankly, I was surprised he was alive and actually showing his face. His point that the slaughter of 1,600 French sailors by the English was a motivating force for him to join the Germans was something I would have never considered. It seems inconceivable back then for the French to have even hesitated siding with anybody other than England--given the competition--but it is clear that Anglophobia was rampant after "the rout" of May 1940. The most sensational thing about this film is the footage of the collaborationists. It seems as if modern history has made great attempts to cover up just how much the citizenry backed Petain (at first) and looked sympathetically to the Nazis. The speeches, the newsreels, and the photos are incredibly valuable and terribly interesting- especially if you're a history buff. I'd rank this one right up there with Hotel Terminus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and penetrating
Let me say immediately that this movie requires some upfront investment: patience, attention, and sympathy. It's not easy to sit for four hours and view "news" that's sixty years old. But once you get past the initial impediments, what you get is a clear window into events that are themselves clear windows into human motivations and their consequences. Ophuls examines one city, and examines how collaborators and resistance fighters played lethal chess. He interviews and probes. What emerges after the four hours is a weird sensation that you were actually present at the interviews--you WERE the camera--and that's the highest praise anyone can give to a documentary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered
This is a really enjoyable movie with good performances.I don't think they could get a cast like this together nowadays withount conflict on the set.Gregory Peck is as good as ever playing the title role.Tony Curtis is hilarious in a suuporting part.Angie Dickinson never looked better.Bobby Darin was up for an Oscar for his protrayal of a deeply trouble airman.I think the best performance goes to Eddie Albert as the troubled military staffer. Also, Robert Duvall puts in a fine show.It is fun and serious and extremely watchable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Admirable movie, sort of like pre-Mash Mash, with good Darin performance
I admire what this movie is trying to do, show some damage war does yet keep it entertaining. It's like what Mash was trying to do and it uses the same solution (mix comedic scenes with dramatic scenes) though not as successfully as Mash. The comedic scenes are more jarring than in Mash; it doesn't meld as well. For example they go from a scene with an anquished screaming mental patient to the hospital ward playing hide the salami...literally.
4-0 out of 5 stars David Miller's Best
David Miller, a talented hack who started out "directing" shorts for MGM, those documentary-style featurettes that would run for six or seven minutes and you now see them presented as "One Reel Wonders" on Turner Classic Movies.Though Miller showcased Robert Taylor in BILLY THE KID and the Duke in FLYING TIGERS, by the 1950s he was primarily thought of as a women's director, a sub-par George Cukor, who reined in Joan Crawford in two of her more restrained vehicles, SUDDEN FEAR and THE STORY OF ESTHER COSTELLO, but couldn't do much for Ginger Rogers in TWIST OF FATE nor Susan Hayward in BACK STREET (the remake).

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Fingers
Based on a true story, this movie is one of the best spy thrillers I've ever seen. The screen play is written with such intelligence and absolute wit that it keeps you at the edge of your seat from the moment it beings until the very last surprising, yet satisfying, second of the movie. James Mason's performance in nothing short of brilliant. His charm is utterly captivating. His lines in this movie are totally unforgettable, as are the lines of Danielle Darrieux who told a German officer "Please don't look at me as if you have more than your salary to live on". This is also a story that makes you reflect on the difference between good and bad leadership and how even the best information or knowledge in the hands of "juvenile delinquents" (as someone called them in the movie) can be useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Black Comedy Of Espionage And Exquisite Manners; One Of James Mason's Best Films
Picture the results of the Normandy invasion if the Germans had known in advance that the Second Front would take place there in early June. It turns out they did know...and they didn't believe the information was true. Note that elements of the plot are discussed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Catch it if You Can
"Five Fingers" is the story of a spy for hire during WWII who has a job as a valet to the ambassador at the British Embassy in Turkey. The movie is a US production but it has the feel of a British movie. That isn't necessarily because of the actors or the setting. It seemed like the many black and white movies the British produced during the 1950's; a bit high brow andmore prone to the dialogue that the action. At times I wondered why the movie came with a fairly high rating.I appreciated the suspense but it usualyy seemed to come up short. As "Five Fingers" entered the final third or fourth of its' 100 or so minutes, things actually started to pick up and my attention level rose through the rest of the movie. This is a movie that pays to watch to the very end. ... LASSITER is a movie about a jewel thief in London during the years just before World War II. After an arrest he is pressured by British law enforcement and the FBI into attempting to steal a horde of gems from the German Embassy.5-0 out of 5 stars Another movie that deserves a DVD release
This little known movie stars Tom Selleck as an American jewel cat thief in pre-World War II London. It's a great movie and has an incredible supporting cast including Bob Hoskins as a police officer doggedly on the title characters trail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is the story of British General Charles "Chinese" Gordon's final battle. It is a little know episode to Americans but is a compelling story made even more so by this fine production.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Way Top
The movie was suggested by Lytton Strachey's fine essay on Gordon that appeared in his classic EMINENT VICTORIANS, and indeed the story was brewing for a long time before a combination of international interests unleashed KHARTOUM in the English speaking world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic inspirational story, classic film, but do read the history too
This is a wonderful story and a riveting film, as the other reviewers have noted. This DVD version is crisp and clear, well done. The final narrator comment is on the mark -- A world in which there is no room for Gordons is doomed to turn to sand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The film you were not allowed to see!
Released my MGM--Metro Goldwyn-Mayer, October 24, 1962.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
The Manchurian Candidate is terrifying.Conspiracy buffs will love this film. The definition of unsettling is seeing crooner and movie musical star Frank Sinatra giving an Oscar-worthy performance as a terrified man who is in way over his head in a conspiracy he does not understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars the better version
This version is far superior to the ill advised attempt at a remake. The original is more suspenseful than the remake. If you decide you want to see both, even though the endings are not identical, I recommend that you see this version first because the remake has enough similarities to ruin the suspense. Frank Sinatra portrays a Korean war veteran named Bennet Marco who has nightmares about brainwashing with fellow platoon member Raymond Shaw, played by Lawrence Harvey, killing companions upon the order of their captors. The dream sequences are totally surreal, an aspect missing from the remake. Shaw is highly decorated war hero who is dominated by his mother (Angela Lansbury).

I can't add anything to the very similar positive reviews already expressed, but what bothered me listening to the movie was that everyone was from California except the American Southerners.
5-0 out of 5 stars When Movies Were Movies
Just bought this old classic on DVD. Why can't they make movies like this anymore? The answer...because there aren't actors like William Holden, Claude Akins, Richard Jaekel and Jack Watson around anymore. The Devil's Brigade is a true story which accurately depicts the camaraderie all fighting men develop. It's great to see some real machismo stuff and not feminist, PC nonsense were subjected to nowadays. The real men of the Devil's Brigade helped save the world 60 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars There were good Germans too. They weren't all Nazis.
First of all, none of this movie takes place in Europe. It takes place in or near Washington DC. By 1940, Europe had been plunged into darkness. Bette Davis is Sara Muller & she has been in Europe for the last 17 years. She is married to a German anti-facist freedom fighter Karl Muller, played by Paul Lukas. They have three kids. They have fled to the United States which is still a year & a half away from war. They are welcomed into Sara's childhood home by her mother, the wealthy & influential Mrs. Farrell & Sara's brother David. They are representative of the ignorance most Americans had as to what had happened in Europe. Mrs. Farrell rules but she warms quickly to her daughter's family. In addition, Mrs. Farrell has two house guests, Marthe & Teck de Brancovis, upper class exiles from Romania. He is a Nazis collaborator & visits the German Embassy often. He wishes to return to Europe. Marthe who appears to be an American, does not want to go back. Besides, she is in love with David. The Muller's plans to settle into a comfortable, affluent lifestlye are foiled when events in Europe convince Kurt that he must return to Europe & continue the fight. DeBranovis becomes aware of this & plans to inform the Germans, thus currying favor with the Nazis. This major conflict must be decided the night that Kurt plans to leave. There is some sermonizing on both sides & when done by the children it is a bit irritating. This is Paul Lukas movie. Bette Davis stepped back just a bit to allow Lukas to shine. He did, all the way to the Academy Awards. It is a war time movie, a mellowdrama & a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch On The Rhine

4-0 out of 5 stars "I do what must be done."
Bette Davis stars in "Watch on the Rhine" as Sara Muller, the daughter of a well-connected Washington political family.Sara is married to a German (Paul Lukas), and they return to America after living for many years in Europe. Her family is puzzled by the somewhat mysterious Lukas, especially when they hear that he has been fighting fascism in Europe.Slowly the pieces start to fall in place, which attracts the attention of others as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "REAL HANOI HILTON"See Sen. John McCain's Home for 5-1/2 years.
I intially saw this at the movies when first released.AT THAT TIME I felt this was a very graphic and powerful movie. One reason I had enjoyed it so much was because of Senator John McCain, tho' not mentioned by name in the movie (he is listed in the credits as being a "guest for 5-1/2 years."It's powerful to me how these regular guys perform these courageous patriotic acts without a second thought. It proves people become heroes from their circumstances and abilities to hold true to beliefs of our democratic principles. This is a must see just for the history of the era.To see Jane Fonda doing what she felt was right to our veterans upholding and protecting our values as a free Nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A film where the silence speaks volumes
The Hanoi Hilton is a chilling video that gives an inside look into what it was like to be a PoW. They didn't allow you to talk, the silence speaks of the many tortures they went through. The lack of dialogue makes you look between the lines and hear what isn't said. There are no right sides in war, the movie wasn't about how horrible the North Vietnamese were, it is about the conditions of war in general and that place in particular. In case no one noticed, the torture became worse after the Cubans became involved. Read more

The first novel I read this was summer was Little Women by Loiusa May Scott. The charactors in this story are Meg, Jo, Beth, and amy. Their father left to go to the navy and now these 4 girls live with their mother, and their nanny, Miss March. Their family is poor. These 4 main charactors are very similar to eachother. Like they all love to read, do play, and write. In this story it's Christmas time and Meg, Jo, beth, and Amy only have a dollar each to by something for their mother and nanny for Christmas. Than in Christmas day they each got one thing that they wanted, but they realized that they have a family to take of them and that their lucky to be with them.

They should also undrestand that when you want something you might not always get what you want in life. I would recommend this book because it is a very good novel and it made me want to read it even more and hopefully if other people read, they would want to keep reading too.

Louisa May Alcott's book has come to life in vivid detail and beauty. The casting is superb. The four sisters are a pleasure to watch and view as they develop into young ladies who experience both the pleasures and pains of growing into adulthood. The film depicts the changes in each character from adolescence and the growing pains associated with making independent decisions based on their personalities and values. As young ladies with education who grew up in a household where their opinions were heard and mattered, they stand in direct contrast with the majority of girls growing up at that time ...

4-0 out of 5 stars No Doubt It's Great
There is no questioning this film is done very well. That said, it should be pointed out that it may not be for everyone. If you are not a fan of cliches, stay away from this. There are TONS of monologues that go on for long periods of time with epic music in the background, and maybe not everyone can handle that. Most of the performances are incredible, my favorite happens to be Jeff Daniels. One performance that doesn't do it for me is Martin Sheen. He shares a lot of scenes with Tom Berenger and it seems like Berenger is the one keeping those scenes afloat. C. Thomas Howell has a steady part but you won't recognize him as the kid from the Outsiders. Great battle scenes, especially the big one in the open field at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars We do what we must do.
After the heart-rending nobility of Abraham Lincoln's verbal tribute to Gettysburg's fallen, there is not much else that could do those men justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Before I give my review I would like to say that everyone who says that Martin Sheen is a bad R.E Lee, or that the movie is inaccurate, or that the movie is too accurate and gives to many stupid details, or that the movie moves to slowly, is a dumb idiot who cares more about hollywood depictions of the Civil War than true depictions. The movie is positivly lovely to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting Action Adventure Story..!!!...but NOT John Wayne version
CAUTION...PLEASE NOTE....This is NOT the John Wayne movie..!!!! The other reviewers reviewed the wrong movie. This movie stars Burt Lancaster as Col. Arthur "Bull" Simons (a retired Special Forces officer who led the POW rescue attempt in North Viet Nam) who was hired by Ross Perot (Richard Crenna) to go into Iran and rescue two of his EDS employees who were being held in prison during the fall of the Shah of Iran. Based on actual events this was a TV mini-series. It is a very good retelling of the actual events and a very worthwhile purchase. Note...this movie is "On Wings of Eagles".....the John Wayne movie is "Wings of Eagles".....

3-0 out of 5 stars A WWII aviator melodrama
John Wayne stars in this sluggish war-related Technicolor bioflick profiling Navy aviator-cum-Hollywood screenwriter Frank Wead, who (apparently) was influential in developing naval strategy before and during WWII... It's not gripping or as grim as director John Ford's similarly reverential "They Were Expendable," but it works in its own way.Dan Dailey steals scene after scene as Wayne's salty Navy sidekick, as does Ward Bond who has a delicious role as John "Dodge", lampooning the director himself, who apparently brought Wead to Hollywood.Maureen O'Hara does her Hepburn-y best as Wead's long-sufferingwife.Of particular interest, plotwise, is the depictation of her as a boozy, chainsmoking modern gal, as well as the lengthy exploration of Wead's struggle to overcome a severe physical disability, which kind of undercuts the smothering machismo of the pre-feminist military world.Nice use of stock footage, too.Not Ford's best, but he definitely makes it better than it would have been otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wings of Eagles-John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara
This is a typical Ford film.Yes, at times The Duke was a bit compassionate towards his co-star than we are used to seeing it the all tough western parts he is famous for. This movie is ladened with talent through and through, from Dan Daily, Ken "Festus" Curtis and the list goes on.It is a true account of part of our naval history that many do not realize. Filmed aboard the USS Philipine Sea, and utilizing many of this carriers actual sailors for extras.A must to complete any John Wayne Collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The dawn of the American age!
Here,John Milius has put together a truly enjoyable film! For the serious fan of historically-based movies, this one may be a bit overly-idealized, in the blatant patriotism...and that is why I loved it! This movie is a refreshing bit of optimism and national pride, in a time when it is "fashionable" by self-proclaimed "enlightened" critics to disparage America's national heritage. This negative and dysfunctional trend has gotten quite tiresome, and its about time someone made a purely patriotic film such as this!
2-0 out of 5 stars --Ridiculous portrayal of President Teddy Roosevelt--
I had looked forward to seeing THE ROUGH RIDERS, but my expectation for a good film was not met by this movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Movie
While having minor inaccuracies to the historical record, "Rough Riders" is an excellent overview of the Volunteer Cavalry operating in Cuba, and a general review of the Cuban invasion itself. One example of a minor inaccuracy is that Maj Frederick Funston was no longer in Cuba by the time of the invasion, but was actually in the Philippines; another is that MG Joe Wheeler had a long flowing beard; nor did Tiffany get killed in action... ok, so what?Regardless of the minor problems, it has a lot of REAL accuracy... the death of
