5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Roan Inish
To any and all ages, this may very well be my all time favorite movie. So beautiful, so touching, what a great myth to put to film. I always have believed in mermaids, and the Irish music is so haunting. I recommend this film to all humans who love the sea and love music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Wine
I have been a fan of Zhang Yimou's films since 1999 when I first watched his 1991 film Raise The Red Lantern for my East Asian Novel class, and since then I have watched several other of his films such as Not One Less, To Live, The Road Home, Happy Times, and Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. Each one of his films brings something new to the table and delves into such issues as urban/rural conflicts, political corruption, and Japan-China relations. Red Sorghum is Zhang Yimou's first film as a director and while it may be a bit simpler than many of his later films it contains elements that almost every fan of his films will be familiar with: beautiful settings, very fleshed out characters, and moments of conflict where those who possess little power are overwhelmed by larger forces. Also, Red Sorghum is Gong Li first film, and it is nice to see that even at such a young age, 21, that she already possessed on screen charisma that can really grip the viewer's heart. While not as masterful as her performances in To Live or Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, her tears and iron core are still quite moving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pastoral epic!
The bold portrait of the humble village wine makers against the interloping Japanese forces. An enigmatic and brave film that marks the ascending and meteoric career of Yimou Zang. Winner of the Silver Bear 1988, and one of my Fifty top choices of that Decade.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good movie!

3-0 out of 5 stars There Will Be Generations Because Of What You Did.
Schindler's List is Steven Spielberg's 1993 motion picture account of, German businessman, Oskar Schindler's role in the rescue of over a thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. Nominated for twelve Academy Awards, it won seven, including "Best Picture" and "Best Director" for Spielberg. The director refused to collect any commissions for the film, claiming it would be like "taking blood money". He went on to give all proceeds to The Shoah Foundation, a non-profit organization with the goal of providing an archive of filmed testimonies from Holocaust survivors, so that their trials will not be forgotten. Since its release, admiration towards the picture has only grown; it is claimed to be one of the decade's finest as well as a bold change and mark of growth for Spielberg.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Important Film
I guess the title of the review says it all, but I'll be a little more specific for an information hungry audience. If you look at the top 10 films on The American Film Institute's Top 100, you'll find that none of the films were made past the 1970's. In fact, only one of them is even made in the '70s. Eight of the films weren't released after the '50s. The only film in that top 10 to bypass those two eras is this film (which is at #9). Why though? This isn't the first or last film about the Holocaust. Is it because it's one of the most commercial of those films? No. Is it because Steven Spielberg is in the director's chair? Again, no. There are many contributing factors to this film's popularity and brilliance and few of those reasons are because of something you may think. To make a completely accurate film that displays every horror of the Holocaust would be impossible. It's the same with September 11th, which is why two films (United 93 and World Trade Center) have built stories around the event...Which is exactly what this film does. It takes a tragic event and instead of using it as the plot, merely uses it as the setting. It builds from this, the story and plot. The main character, Oskar Schindler, is played in an Oscar-worthy performance by Liam Neeson. An actor most people may know by now as Qui-Gon Jinn in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace." Schindler had no success in business before or after the holocaust and if not for his braveness, would no doubt not be remembered today. Schindler lives in Poland and is a part of the Nazi party. When we meet Schindler he is at a nightclub filled with Nazi officers. He sends them drinks and is soon sitting at tables with them. Spielberg (or is it screenwriter Steve Zaillian) makes it clear from the beginning, without really telling you...Schindler is a conman. As thousands of Jews are killed left and right, Schindler begins planning on opening a factory. The factory will make pots and pans, the workers will be jews. They won't be paid a cent and he will profit from it. He sounds like your typical Nazi, which is exactly what his Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley, who is amazing) thinks as well. You probably already know this, but I'll tell you anyway. Schindler's plan was not to make money off the Jews, but to save them from death.
5-0 out of 5 stars It took me over a decade to actually watch this film...
...though I rented it at least five times. I knew that with Spielberg directing it was going to be Affecting, and I wasn't sure how I was going to actually function in the world afterwards.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood... this movie needs a remake
The Great Escape is an obsolete three-hour long film based on a true story with a mediocre cast.A movie should have special effects other than a motorcycle racing across a field. What it needs is more CGI (computer-generated imagery) action scenes.Who cares what happened in WWII when they had the Geneva Conventions? The pathetic mono music soundtrack also needs an upgrade to 5.1 so you can hear all of the explosions on your subwoofer.Better yet, the movie should be remade with Tom Cruise (Captain Hilts "The Cooler King") and Ice Cube (Flying Officer Louis Sedgwick "The Manufacturer") as POWs in Iraq with an original sound track including songs from Cypress Hill, 2 Live Crew, Weird Al Yankovic, Enya and Justin Timberlake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tough Guy Movie-Special Effects Need Not Apply
This movie was made in 1963, if anyone tries and judge movies from 1963 by todays standards they typically think the movie is boring and slow moving. The movie is based on a true story, there is a book you can read if you want more detail. You probably have more great actors (James Garner, Charles Bronsan, McQueen, Attenborough, Coburn, etc) in this one movie than you have combined in all hollywood today.Today is all special effects, blood and guts and the more brutality the better.Imagine any movie today with no cursing, would not get past the screening room.Listen to Richard Attenborough classify all the Germans as one enemy, does not differentiate between SS and Gestapo. We are at war with ALL of them, not just the SS.Teenagers drive todays movie market and there a few movies which can keep their attention if there are no special efects. This movie is an adult movie, plain and simple. The motorcycle scene is awesome.I think Steve McQueen did most of it.Richard Attenborough is one tough guy in the movie, you do not have to be steroid pumped up to be tough, you can be tough with your mind. The music score is great, scenery is great, actors great and it is an entertaining movie.I really have tried to tell that I enjoyed this movie and it is a good movie. Remember this movie is made only 16 or so years after WWII.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bootcamp for escape artists
THE GREAT ESCAPE is a three-hour long epic based on a true story about the most notorious group of escape artists held as POWs in WWII. Malice, determination, and loyalty are brought to fruition in the process. The goal in placing the most troublesome prisoners in one camp was to provide the strictest security. However, the Germans unwittingly pooled the best resources together for and attempt at the largest escape in prison history.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BURMESE HARP
Director Kon Ichikawa made a truly great movie, especially considering that this anti-war movie was made not long after the end of the second world war. [1956 release] Having read quite a bit about the Pacific theatre of war as an undergraduate, I came to appreciate this movie about how the trauma of this horrible war affected one Japanese soldier. The soldier becomes spiritually obsessed with burying as many Japanese war dead that he comes across in his journey throughout the country of Burma. And he vows to remain in Burma until he has accomplished this task [a very formidabale task!] The fact that this Cinematic masterpiece is only available on VHS, not DVD, does not detract from the richness of the movie. I rank this movie right up there with "PATHS OF GLORY," as my two most favorite anti-war movies ever made. A must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting Japanese anti war film!
At the end of the WW2, a survivor of a Japanese Command, follows his bliss when he takes a decision: to disguise himself as a monk . He will make a reflexive tour, a powerful insight act, a soul searching journey soul searching backto those places where his fellow comrades met the death. This redemption fact once more completes the mythical cycle of the life: birth and innocence, maturity and experience and finally wisdom and redemption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Come Japan, come England, Burma is Buddha's country
At the beginning of this long film the audience sees a spectatcular view red dirt and red mountains of Burma, which is very significant because, if one is familiar with Buddhist tradition, the dust symbollizes the mortal world of suffering and it represents what one wants to brush off if one desires to follow the path of the Buddha. After seeing the bleak terrain, the audience is introduced to a small contigent of soldiers led by Captain Inoue a former music teacher. In order to keep his troops spirits up, the Captain teaches his men how to sing with varying degrees of success. His most gifted soldier is Mizushima, who has taught himself how to play a Burmese Harp which he has mastered quite skillfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret War of Harry Frigg
This Movie is well worth the few dollars paid for it. If you like WWII movies with a light comic twist to it then this is for you. I don't know why sequals were neve made of this move its that good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and entertaining
This was a fun movie for my grandchildren andus ex-WWII guys, but the casting of Harry Frigg could have been better.Newman just wasn't the comedian for this role.Jack Nicholson could have handled Frigg's role better. Newman couldn't decide which character he was; viz., a lazy skylarking blubberhead, a crafty noncom everlasting Army Private, a savvy Army con artist, an underpriviledged Mensa candidate . . . or who? Depite Newman's acting problems, the film was humorous and entertaining. You'll laugh at the generals, the Italian captors, and the Nazis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Newman is Harry Frigg

5-0 out of 5 stars ALegacyforOurYouth
As an African American parent and teacher, this movie is a MUST for our children. Each generation is further removed from the real-life experiences of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the deceased generation of slavery. The word"nigger" is now used thoughtlessly as a joke. Our children don't realize the significance the word had and still has for some generations. Too many believe they can refuse or fight their way out of an unwanted situation. Theirs is a different reality. ROOTS can bring them in touch with the past of those who havedied in a struggle to maintain dignity for our people. This legacy is alive in the movie ROOTS. Share the legacy with our children---see the movie with a young person.

2-0 out of 5 stars not as avertised..editted movie
the movie is good except this version has been editted and cut out sceens, very disapointting

5-0 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever
An excellent film, Good Morning Vietnam, brings to the screen the story of a US airman that gets transferred from Crete in Greece to Saigon in South Vietnam as the war in S.E. Asia is escalating.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Warm, No, This Is the Setting For London Broil"
Many have tried to dismiss this film as nothing more than a comedic vehicle for Robin Williams. The concept of making light of the horrors of war, particularily Vietnam since it's still so recent in the minds of many turns alot of viewers off to the important potential lessons to be learned in this wonderfully insightful movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like a good real life story, you will enjoy this film
It starred the great actor Dennis Hopper as Berry Seal, a DEA informant. He was hoping to get no time in jail if he helped the government in their pathetic "war on drugs" (liberals and conservatives can agree it's been a complete failure). Hopper's portrayal of Seal gives me the impression that the informant was a brash adventurer who smuggled drugs just as much for the thrill as for the money. When caught, he didn't turn on his partners in crime but did help get evidence about the drug smugglers in South America. He did risk his life and he should have got what the government promised. What he got was doubled-crossed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie, yet sad on our Goverments actions!!!!
I am friends with the characters(Barry and Camp) kids. This movie is such a great piece of art on just how the Columbian drug lords work and how corrupt the government is.This true story is touching, it is about a man who brought down the South American drug cartel single handedly, and was double crossed by a judge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Oliver North after he completed his task given to him by our government. It is a 11 out of 10.A NEED TO SEE MOVIE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating thriller!
Dennis Hopper, is a true living legend. This singular and talented actor that so many good performances has done, it shines with this clever script as a casting agent' s dream come true as drug smuggler.Interesting and well effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are the History.
It's a story,it's the past that we can't hold back.We must not be so dupe of what had happened.I watched it,I know it and I don't want to ask questions where the answers are there. We know the answers.Somehow rather, the movie is to me,very well done. It's enjoyable to me though there are few afflict scenes. It can happen to me,to you and to anybody. It's a story of the past that has shaped the World.I have also that documentary regarding Romanov. It's just that, when I learnt in school,at fourteen years old,I can't imagine how the Emperor and his Emperesse would look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 Stars?
An outstanding film, Nicholas & Alexandra, brings to the screen the story of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family's tragic end at the hands of the Bolsheviks.
4-0 out of 5 stars CD version necessary to understand fame/power karma
If you are interested in knowing what challenges monarches and other powerful people face, this movie is a great beginning. You may or may not be interested in Russian history or even world history, but this particular story greatly encapsulates the emotional, physical and political issues faced by two powerfully-born adults and their children. Other reviews at this site are terrific for their critical perceptions of this movie and its strengths and weaknesses, so I will not go into too much detail to "sell" anybody on the action or dialogue, or historical accuracy. Suffice to say this movie -- in its unedited version (crucial for DVD) does in fact tell it like it is (or was). Nicholas and Alexandra were two human beings who happened to be born into the Western dynastic system still prevalent at the turn of the 20th century. They were responsible, in an almost Biblical sense, for the destiny of Humanity, only they opted out, and were then executed. This would be considered "romantic" if Humanity did not have such an overwhelming need for Leadership by designated heroes. The DVD version is critical to see the full relationship between Alexandria and Rasputin as a surrendering of power, and also to see Rasputin in his full decadent expression (which must be positively repulsive to Russian history revisionists.) It is also necessary, in an emotional and historic context, to see the "failure" of Nicholas -- that he could no longer carry the responsibility of the godhead. It is also relevant to see the execution of Rasputin at the hands of the two hop-head fairies who were also in line to inherit this godhead, and that they themselves had dreams of American incorporation. Alexia (Nicholas and Alexandra's only son, who also happened to be a hemophiliac) hates his persecutors with a very personal, adult hatred -- those who persecuted the Romanov dynasty were people who hated themselves and took that hatred out on the leaders they loved and despised. They loved their leaders, and despised their need for leaders. If you purchase this movie, whatever your reason or interest, please buy the DVD so that it is unedited (meaning uncensored) so thatyou may judge for yourself. ... Read more

This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. Of course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Directed by Philippe de Broca and set during World War I, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'King of Hearts' is King in My Heart
I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad film
Though I wouldn't consider this to the greatest Vietnam film I've ever seen (which to me would be Platoon) I wouldn't consider it to be the worst. This film actually goes some way to realistically portray a U.S platoon, where as many films just centre on a crazy one man killing machine. The characters actually are shown to vulnerable, even the hero of the Story. The only thing that lets this film down in my eyes is the obvious shoe string budget and also a few innacuracies. The budget limitations saw them use a crude mock up of an M79 Grenade Launcher and also contrary to what someone else put a very poor helicoptor assault scene that looks like something straight out of Thunderbirds. Also the soldiers were using 30 round magazines (which only ever appeared at the end of the war and were not issued to standard US army troops) instead of 20 round ones. Its only a small point but I'd have thought thats why they employed a military advisor, to make sure things like this were correct.

A fine war picture which shows the struggles of a platoon in Vietnam. Their leader gets a wake up call on assignment sending him to the hospital and realizes the importance of life (sacred). 5-0 out of 5 stars Mangled but not totally destroyed
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars We's all from Tennessee....
This movie is a real gem and John Huston does a remarkable job in creating a fairly realistic looking Civil War environment. You won't find any overweight re-enactors aiming their rifles at the sky and not showing any signs of fear. No this movie provides actors and men like Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin, who knew well what real war was all about. The battle scenes are quite good for the period in which they were filmed and certainly have a more realistic feel than some of the battle scenes depicted in more recent Civil War "epics".

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be a classic if not!
First time I seen this movie, I loved it! Hadn't seen Mr. Roberts prior to seeing Ensign Pulver, but after seeing Mr. Roberts...Ensign Pulver is the video I bought!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Premise for a Sequel
This is not a bad sequel from director Joshua Logan. It more or less picks up where MISTER ROBERTS left off but is presented with an entirely knew cast in familiar roles. Robert Walker Jr. is Ensign Pulver. Burl Ives is the Captain. Walter Matthau is good as Doc. He has the cynicism and wit but lacks the good-natured purpose of being that William Powell demonstrated in MISTER ROBERTS. To its credit the film tries to uncover the facade that the Captain wears night and day. Is he really a no good miserable excuse for a human being or is there something lurking deep inside that keeps his humanity from emerging. Pulver sets out unravel the enigma. There are some great moments of comedy and humanity and the film does have a great supporting cast that includes Jack Nicholson, James Farentino, Millie Perkins, Tommy Sands, Al Freeman, Jr., James Coco and Larry Hagman that keeps it all moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mister Roberts #2
Although not as classic as Mister Roberts, this is still a great movie. Hech, I didn't even know there was a sequel, so I bought both copies. They have both earned a Top Shelf placing in my bookcase. All characters play great parts, even though James Cagney and Henry Fonda aren't in this movie. It would have been great to see some of the actors from the Mister Roberts, even though the 'new' doc, played by Walter Matthea does a great job. Both he and the "old Ensign" make great movies together! As most movies drag the chain nowadays going for 2-3+ hours, this is one movie I thought could go on and not get boring. Another classic and great fun for all family to enjoy. We wish more movies were like this nowadays. No Swearing, No Violence, No War .... not even a bullet is fired. An allround great movie. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sing Away the War
Two Girls and a Sailor is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and features a great cast. The Deyo Sisters Patsy and Jean (June Allyson, Gloria De Haven) have been in show business their whole lives. When they grow up, they start their own canteen for soldiers and sailors from WWII to visit, have some snacks, and be entertained. Jean has a secret admirerer who gives her an old warehouse to expand the canteen. In it is an old vaudeville star (Jimmy Durante) whose career is practically over but who comes alive when he can aid in running the canteen. A large amount of soldiers frequent, especially Johnny (Van Johnson) who becomes special to both the girls.

I rate this high because it was the only movie we had on Iwo Jima. This of course when there was only mop up operations. We must have watched it 5 or more times. I will never forget that movie because of the circumstances, We were humming the song "Sweet and Lovely" for days.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't help but be amazed with June and GLoria
Really love this movie. SHame that Miss Dehaven was not in more pictures. SHe is one very tallented actress who has beauty, style, class and proved that even in the movie "Out to Sea", still has all these things and CAN STILL DANCE with the best of them. SHe really has a wonderful singing voice. Most of all...........even at this stage of her life (80 yr. old) she is just as beautiful and LOOK AT THOSE EYES and THAT SMILE!!!!It is nice to know that Miss Dehaven, Miss Allyson and Mr. Johnson have remianed friend for years. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Josey wales
The movie I liked very much, one of the best he ever made.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Eastwoods Best Action Packed Westerns
At the time of its release, this was the best western that Eastwood had ever done with the exception of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". Eastwood skillfully plays a sympathetic character whose wife and child are killed during the Civil War near Kansas by the Union "Redlegs" who are virtually roguing military. Seeking revenge for his loss, he joins a Bloody Bill Anderson's guerrilla unit that strikes unmercifully against the union forces. As the war ends, the majority of the unit comes in to surrender except for Josey and they are slaughtered by the Redlegs who seek retaliation. And there is your story; Josey becomes the hunted as he and one escaping companion are hunted virtually to eternity. Eastwood plays the character perfectly as he carries multiple pistols and weapons as Confederate cavalry did to even fire power, even with loaded cylinders that he can interchange with his pistols. Comical at times, as Eastwood seems to pick up lost souls from Indian Dan George (Little Bigman), to an abused female Indian, a cranky granny and her attractive yet pensive daughter (Locke) and even a red boned cur dog who suffers the indignity of Josey's spiteful but accurate tobacco spit (but the dog follows anyways). George has several lines that work as commentary onthe plight of the 'Civilized Tribes' and the Cherokees choice of backing the south. He also invokes great humor with lines like, "I didn't surrender, but they took my horse. He surrendered". The movie is a thrill a minute as Josey frequently has to shoot his way out of traps, accidental discoveries, the rescue of one of his lost souls and the climatic ending where he finally finds a peaceful place until he is found again not only by his old enemies but the Indians in his adopted home. In each circumstance where he finds himself confronted with danger and as always outnumbered, he always seeks an edge to give him some advantage, and when he spits, there is going to be some shooting. And there is a sub-climatic moment where Josey meets with his Indian counterpoint, recognizing that they have recently lived parallel lives, each being hunted and perhaps abused, making a statement that each deserves a better life. Not as sensitive as his best film the "Unforgiven" or perhaps as realistic, but action packed and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Contrary, Great Eastwood
There is something about Clint Eastwood that allows him the luxury of delivering a cheesey macho line without looking like an ass. In a movie full of such lines, Eastwood really shines in this epic western. I have always wondered why the critics never gave this western its due, while normal every day joes continue to give it the thumbs up. I believe the answer lies in the sympathic portrayal of the Confederate outlaw who is Josey Wales. How dare anyone cast anything wearing a Confederate uniform in anything less than an evil light? Moreover, How dare anyone portray Union Soldiers as a bunch of marauding murderers who looted and pillaged their way through a defeated South? These are the type of thoughts likely dancing through the heads of liberal wine drinking cheese eating newspaper types while sitting down to disparage what is Eastwood's best movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE WARNER BROTHERS CLASSICS
Disney notwithstanding, in my humble opinion the greatest animated shorts came out of Warner Brothers in the late 30's to mid 1940's.This collection of 11 toons hosted by big toon head fan and movie critic, Leonard maltin, features Warner's unabashedly pro-american and ethno-centric cartoons of WWII.Rarely, If Ever, do these pop up on TV anymore due to their stereotypes of Japanese and Germans.
