this movie was spectacular. One of the most beautiful set of images I've ever seen on the screen. It stimulated and aroused my imagination. I have not seen the movie for years, and am still struck by it's beauty and wonder.

The amazon.com `Spotlight Review' of the film `The Keep' by lawyeraau is spot on!
4-0 out of 5 stars Strange with GREAT soundtrack
Personally, I liked the film. It was weird and *different* in a good way. The soundtrack was one of the best I've ever heard. Michael Mann usually has good soundtracks for his films. Tangerine Dream did this one. The movie and the soundtrack are unavailable.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT!!!
Along with "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "King Lear," "Julius Caesar" remains one of my favorite tragedies of William Shakespeare. (With "Coriolanus" not so far behind.) This play of Shakespeare's and (this move for that matter) was what got me into Shakespeare in the first place, and later an English Major in college. Like I said, this is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and this movie in no way whatsoever falls short of the book. It was truly a blessing to get James Mason (Brutus), John Gielgud (Cassius) and Marlon Brando (Mark Antony) together. This movie (with virtually no special effects) shows that it takes good directing, good actors, and a good script to make things work. Some of you probably know that this was the first play of Shakespeare's to be performed at the Globe Theatre. Moving on to the material at hand, this play repesents moral ambiguity in a political setting. We meet Cassius and Brutus. Cassius is not happy with the fact that the ambitious Julius Caesar is to be crowned, and the flawed, but still virtuous Brutus reluctantly agrees to take part in the conspiracy to assasinate Caesar. Like in the play, we meet Mark Antony (Brando) and he seems insignificant. But he will later prove very significant. We only meet Calpurnia (Caesar's wife) and Portia (Brutus's wife) briefly. But they do make the most of their one scene. For that matter, even the Soothsayer who only has a minor part does well. (Perhaps good acting often means making the best of even a small part.) As most of you know, around the halfway point Julius Caesar meets his fate, and Louis Calhern portrays the famous line: "Et Tu Brute? Then fall Caesar" well. Marlon Brando is nothing short of phenomenal when he appears to make peace with the conspirators and then reveals his real feelings in the famous" "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war" passage. The naive (but still likable) Brutus delivers his convincing funeral passage well. Unfortunately for him, Mark Antony's counterspeech is nothing short of hypnotic. (One of the best things about this play is that rather than good guys and bad guys, we have 3 major characters with 2 opposing views, and we can be lead into sympathy and understanding with either of them.) Despite the limited resources of the time, Louis Calhern's ghost of Caesar is frightening and effective. This leads to the final confrontation between Brutus and Cassius versus Octavius and Mark Antony. (For the record, at this point in time, Brutus and Cassius DID hold the advantage.) The battle where Antony crushes Cassius is so well done in that (1) it shows Antony's stategy, (2) it is well done without excess blood or special effects, and (3) it DOES NOT glorify war. It DOES in fact show war as the ugly and repulsive thing it is. Despite Cassius's faults (possibly through the good acting of John Gielgud), we are moved into sympathy for him when he meets his fate. (For the record, Mike Ansara, the servant of Cassius who is with him to the end would play a sympathetic Klingon Captain in "Star Trek's" 'Day of the Dove' and would be the voice of Mr. Freeze in the animated Batman series.) And James Mason continues his phenomenal performance of Brutus right up to the end. As in the play, the crowning touch is the respectful eulogy Mark Antony gives to Brutus, and Marlon Brando more than delivers. While I fear that some movies like a recent and really garrish "Hamlet" would have had Shakespeare crying in his grave, this production of "Julius Caesar" would do William Shakespeare proud.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sic Semper Tyrannus
James Mason, John Gielgud and Edmond O'Brien carry the day here in this largely marvelous film adaptation of Julius Caesar; to my mind, Shakespeare's greatest play. All three put their vast stage experience to work, and in particular Gieulgud's reading of Casca's complaints about Caesar's ascension is hypnotically powerful. All three are far more eloquent than Marlon Brando, who looks a little uncomfortable as Marc Antony and doesn't quite capture the two-sidedness of the fighting voluptuary who sees no reason he shouldn't step into Caesar's shoes.Louis Calhern is miscast as JC but gave rise to one of Hollywood's great anecdotes.Calhern volunteered to lie-in as Caesar's corpse during Antony's funeral oration and said after one take, "Can we do that again?I wasn't very good."Hollywood's byzantine union rules for stage extras hampered the filming of the battle scenes so thoroughly that this was the last time such a scene was ever shot in California.

5-0 out of 5 stars I call him "The Beard" (see below)
Next time I review Midsummer Night's Dream remind me to instead rant a bit about people who call it Midsummer's Night Dream and completely ignore any other intelligent comment on that great play. Bard, shmard, who gives a rat's patoot? That whiny review wouldn't cut in in "scholarly circles" whatever the hell those are in this age. We're lucky anyone refers to him at all, even as "Billy."

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but do not ask for the impossible
I will try not to repeat what other reveiwers have said, so I will be short about all the qualities of this miniseries: excellent actors, engrossing storyline, excellent reconstruction of the siege as it happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Although I just viewed the abridged version, I found it highly suspenseful and riveting. Otool and Strauss were exceptional--that's what made the drama so compelling. Each man was intensely resolved to achieve his goal, and neither would surrender to the other. Also, each hero was extremely human--sensitive and thoughtful--despite the pluck and resolve each had.

I bought my copy of the miniseries, MASADA. I just looked and I saw one copy from there. When I bought mine, I got it, factory sealed, from a seller called buy.com. I went to buy.com website and the movie is on back order but, hey, you've waited this long, right? I also see that www.moviesunlimited.com has it for sale; you will need: (item # 072787).I am looking to get mine put on DVD to preserve the video. I, too, remember watching it as a child and the indelible etching it left on my memory. I have watched all 394 minutes again as an adult and it is as huge and glorious as I remember it. I didn't even know an expurgated version exists - I can not imagine cutting even a minute from this perfect epic. It would be like cutting The "10 Commandments" or Homer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A cult silent epic movie!
This is an exciting silent drama, featuring one of the most emotive aerial sequences for those ages, with superb photography. A true homage to the brave pilots of the WW1. William Wellman' finest film, made with courageous and honor' s sense. The first awarded film makes for you an absolute must-see.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Great American Classic Film
If you were only to ever sit down to watch one silent film - Wings should be that film.I have a VHS copy and have taken to watching it judiciously just to preserve the tape. This needs to be out on DVD!The plot is elegant and well thought out.If anyone has convinced you that you can't tell a complex story without a lot of dialogue, just show them this masterpiece to shut them up.I'm sure that Lucas must have been a fan of Wings when I watch the X-wing fighter sequences in the Star Wars films.Even so, Lucas didn't do as good a job as these folks did back in the 1920's.The flying is brilliant, the actors do most of their own flying and stunt work, and the emotion is startling and powerful.Watch Wings, and then be prepared to reevaluate every film you've ever seen - this is a true masterwork.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit above average, I guess.
Well, here is exactly the type of silent film that most people do not watch nowadays; it's neither a comedy like the Charlie Chaplin movies, nor a horror film like Nosferatu. This, instead, is a typical American action/drama flick, with ample quantities of both.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Disperse Ye Rebels!Disperse!!
This is a decent film that deserves to be re-issued on DVD.While not a big budget opus like infamous Mel Gibson's THE PATRIOT, this is a much higher quality film overall. While a bit slow in the beginning with family relationships in Lexington, the film picks up when the British at last appear on the screen! There is a nice shot of the British columm deploying impressively into line to face Captain Parker's company. The only problem here is that the British force at this point consisited of six companies of Light Infantry who jogged into town at a fast clip before forming line opposite the militia. This would have been less impressive to show, plus i guess the available re-enactors could not all be shown in Light Infantry garb.So we get the usual mix of line companies, Grenadiers and Lights all in group together!Colorful, but not accurate!
4-0 out of 5 stars Lexington in April 1775
This film is set in 1775 Colonial Massachusetts. A peddler is stopped and searched, the British troops find a musket, powder, balls and confiscate them and the wagon (Gun Control!). The peddler stops at a local tavern to tell about this. The people have noticed an increase in British troop patrols. We then meet a family and see a portrayal of life in the 18th century as similar to today. There is a meeting among the men, they discuss the relative military strengths of the Colonial militia to the 5,000 British troops in Boston. [In fact the militia had a long military experience in colonial warfare, the British were less experienced.]

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute and Subversive
I've known that there was a film with the title "The Teahouse of the August Moon" for years but never had any interest in viewing it. I probably had it confused with "Sayonara", Marlon Brando's other post WWII Japan film. And there was never any reason to suspect that it was anything but a light comedy, as it was based on a stage play.
5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless, Wonderful Comedy
I don't think anyone who hasn't lived in Japan or Okinawa can truly 'get' this film. Having lived there for 3 1/2 years in the mid-80's, courtesy of the U.S. Navy, this is one of my all-time favorite fims, ever.It truly captures the warmth and intelligence of the Japanese & Okinawan cultures.Marlon Brando is wonderful - and very believeable - as Sakini. We laugh just as hard every time we see this film. John F. Kennedy lived long enough to see this Hollywood account of his Navy career and his heroism following a ruthless attack by a Japanese ship on his small patrol craft. Cliff Robertson is an amiable choice to play Kennedy, though one won't find a lot of the late president's mannerisms in his performance. The key battle sequence, which finds Kennedy and his crew bloodied and battered while trying to stay alive in shark-infested waters, makes a big impression on young viewers. Read more

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
When reviews of music DVD's are all over the board regarding sound quality only one fair conclusion is possible: The problem is the end user, not the product. I was stunned by how good this DVD sounded. Consider the conditions under which Woodstock was recorded and the quality and calibration of your home system before jumping to negative conclusions about this "transfer". That the VHS version sounds better than the Dolby 5.1 mix on DVD is simply not possible. You can quibble about several aspects of this movie but sound quality should not be one of them. ... Like Mann's other well-known feature, "Fall of the Roman Empire," El Cid has a lot going for it: breathtaking Spanish scenery and fabulously authentic set pieces, two very competent and attractive leads with Heston and Loren, and an interesting protagonist whose story is steeped more in myth than reality.

It is criminal that this title has not had an American release. The junk that gets released, and this classic just sits. One part action, one part romance make this is a sweeping epic. The battle scenes, the cinematography, the acting--all top notch.Fans of Braveheart, Ben Hur, Spartacus, etc.this is a film for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clock (1945)
This is one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching movies ever made. You are lulled into the movie from the beginning. I saw this on Turner Classic Movies the other night and was amazed at how beautiful it is. There is no swearing in this movie, no sex, no violence, just old fashioned romance and the display of the powerful need for love in human beings. Judy Garland is a great actor and it is directed well by Vincente Minnelli. Movies today are sick, perverted and immoral and they feed the moral decay of this once great nation. The Clock is a must see movie from better more hopeful days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Wartime Romance with a Luminous Garland in a "Musical"-Feeling Non-Musical
A sincere piece of treacle just before the end of WWII, this 1945 romantic drama features a never-lovelier Judy Garland in her only non-singing role during her golden MGM years. Even though she is a talented enough actress without having to vocalize, she is in a movie that feels like a musical in its cinematic sensibilities - swooning romanticism, quicksilver plot turns and broad stock characters. That shouldn't come as a surprise since her then-fiancé Vincente Minnelli directed and Arthur Freed produced, both much better known for their musicals of the period. Still, they have made a sweet film with worthwhile stylistic touches such as the use of long zoom shots in maneuvering through the swarming crowds in the subway and train stations and the screen panning used in showing the mini-dramas of background characters we never see again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Let's make a stop in the War!
During a very brief withdrawal a soldier will meet, woo and wed a girl before shipping out. A romantic drama typical of that age but with a striking message beneath the script. Follow your bliss before it may be late. Judy Garland is wonderful in this movie.

Editorial Review

This 1991 comedy by Gabriele Salvatores was knocked for notbeing deep enough, but it is what it is, and it's actually an easygoing, sunnymovie about eight Italian soldiers who manage to strand themselves on a tiny Greek island paradise during World War II. The sort of mutts who would shoota donkey for not knowing the proper password, these clumsy warriorsbecome a comic variation on the Lotus Eaters of myth, their fighting spirit evaporated in the midst of so much beauty and sexual availability among the local women. There are also sundry opportunities for the men to find another purposefor their lives (one particularly artistic fellow works on the restorationof a church, for example). Amid the sometimes coarse jokes and gratuitous nudity, there are subtle themes about the contrast between what men are truly like in their natural state versus what they are like as killers. "Mediterraneo" is a FUN movie. It's a very likeable story of a group of Italian marines who follow an assignment to occupy an obscure Greek Aegean island during the early period of WWII.Due to a series of escapades, they lose their contact with the outside world.Instead, they get caught up in their own little world for the next three years. That may sound like a boring movie but things happen from time to time and the excerpts we see are generally pretty funny. The different personalities emerge and their variety allows the writer and the actors plenty of room for development. In the end, the marines are "rescued" by their new allies; the British.Initially, all of the soldiers were focussed on getting out of this forsaken island. In the end, the island had become their home and their "rescue" was a mixed blessing.A post script ending brings the feeling together in a poignant way.
