"I was not very impressed by the caption", "The most Savage Warrior of all times" even after watching the movie. I never saw savage, I saw a very clever revengeful boy, who grew with much hate for the ones who had done his family: Mother, Grandmother and sister as well as himself, Wrong. This warrior, who became a King, as told in the movie was destined to become a powerful King and rule over all Kraal's, which is the word the British chosen to be used for the Africans instead of empire's. So when one is not subjected to a way of another's way of living, then theychoose to degraded another's way of life, with words. Powerful and savagery! I guess if I had to wonder in the wildernest for years I just might have a revenge problem as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely bloodcurdling
I think I saw this on TV. The fighting is so realistic as to be terrifying. Not for the weak of heart or stomach. But like vampire films, it does have its macabre appeal. The movie fails to create any sympathy for the Africans who were colonized and suppressed by Europeans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the Complete Miniseries instead!
Having watched and thoroughly enjoyed the entire miniseries on TV in the 1980s, I bought this set and expected it to be the same.I was very disappointed with the editing done to reduce the length from 8 hours down to 5 hours. The result is choppy, with dialogue frequently referring to scenes and sequences that were cut.In addition, there are editorial gaffes in some of the recaps of previous episodes where the cut scenes are recapped. These instances left me wondering what I had missed -- and then I realized that the scenes had been cut out. While this cut is still riveting, if you're willing to sit still for 5 hours of this version of Shaka Zulu, I'd recommend spending the additional 3 hours watching the complete version -- and at about the same price. It's well worth it! ... Humphrey Bogart is heartbreaking as the tragic Captain Queeg in this 1954 film, based on a novel by Herman Wouk, about a mutiny aboard a navy ship during World War II. Stripped of his authority by two officers under his command (played by Van Johnson and Robert Francis) during a devastating storm, Queeg becomes a crucial witness at a court martial that reveals as much about the invisible injuries of war as anything. 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of Good Movies
It is great to watch "older" movies.
3-0 out of 5 stars "I'm a Lot Drunker than You, so It Should be a Fair Fight"
A great movie in every way but the obvious.Jose Ferrer, playing the Jewish attorney who tries to save Van Johnson from death by hanging, makes an unexpected turnaround at the end of the movie during a lavish celebratory party scene (filmed at San Francisco's legendary Palace Hotel).Ferrer's drunken outburst is pure theater, but in terms of cinema syntax comes way out of left field.Gee, if he felt so badly about defending Maryk, why take the case at all?It seems like it was survivor's guilt, that he wanted to make money so, knowing there was no big bucks to be made in the service, chose a career somewhere else, and left the schlubs like Queeg to do the real grunt work, and now we're persecuting him for being lower class.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ol' Yellowstain
This is an absolutely astounding film. This is where it all came from. A Few Good Men? Men Of Honor? No, they don't hold a court-room candle to this fantastic film. Is the Captain crazy, or he just riding a slack crew too hard? Being a sailor myself, I can say this film accurately shows both sides of the fence. Mix in the court room drama, a dash of comedy, a smidge or romance and you have one incredible naval movie. This is my first Bogart film, and I'm an instant fan. His performance as the Captain is phenomenal. The last 30 minutes is great, but the last 5 minutes takes the cake. It is some of the best acting I've ever seen, and José Ferrer's last line should go down in movie lore as one of the best of all time. Even 52 years later, you could show this on the big screen and get a good turnout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A corrosive antimilitarist satire
" Absurd " humour against the absurd of war. Director Richard Lester dismounts the british establisment, the cynical lies and fabricated interests hidden under the smoke curtain of the patrotism, the military discipline, the stereotypes of epics and the delirious glorification and manipulative vision that some films do of war with his juvenile and iconoclast spirit and sardonic comicity. Lester uses techniques of strangeness to accentuate the grotesque side of war and the sentiment of alienation in which seems to move all the time the characters: the movie is conceived as a long chain of satirical vignettes or synthetic thought-provokative gags whithin a flashback narration conducted by the leutenant Goodbody ( a splendid Michael Crawford ), responsible of one of the worst units of the army. Likewise, the deliberately frenetic dialogues ( in the army the members of the high command speak loud and fast to their subordinates and don't wait that the soldiers think, this is, Lester makes a caricature of the militaries' rules and their tics ) are recordered in a very deliberated artificial way provoking the effect as if we were listening the thoughts of the characters or their words didn't belong to them ( this very interesting narrative resort we can already find with a similar intention in the Fleischer brothers' " talkartoons "). John Lennon leaves this time the rest of the Beatles to join to the disastrous unit leaded by Michael Crawford, who plays the role of the completely incompetent leutenant, in this tragic-comic antiwarlike movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not what you expected
If you are looking for the typical Beatles movie you will be disappointed with this one. It has some funny moments but this is a war movie, war is not funny. John Lennon is excellent in this film and the movie was put together well. It takes some thinking to understand some moments, so if you are not into thinking about your movies don't watch it. But if you want to watch a war movie that has great actors and director and an interesting plot then this is one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Lennon
Richard Lester's HOW I WON THE WAR has always been a controversial film simply because of all the publicity that Beatle John Lennon would be appearing in it. Put simply, John Lennon really just appears in it as one of several British soldiers under the command of the narrow minded and nave Michael Crawford during this WWII anti war film.Michael Crawford is the main character of this film. It is Crawford that undergoes a transition in this film from his military experience and he is the central focus of all the bizarre events that occur. John Lennon's character really gets no focus at all. The publicity around Lennon distorted the impression of this film for almost all time. That is unfortunate. Richard Lester's film is not bad but it is not for all tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard-Hitting and Realistic
THE PIANIST is a very fine movie about the survival experiences of a Polish pianist during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw in World War II. The film contains many memorable scenes reflecting both the worst and best of humanity under extremely trying conditions. One such scene shows German soldiers bullying and mocking elderly Jewish refugees and another depicts a Russian tank blasting a building in which the pianist is hiding. In contrast, there is a scene in which a German officer finds the pianist playing the piano in an otherwise vacant building. The German officer seems mesmerized by the music and grateful to be able to experience such a pleasant interlude in the midst of the horrors of war. Immediately a bond is struck between the two men. The role of the pianist is played by Adrien Brody. Also in the cast are Thomas Kretschmann, Frank Finlay, Maureen Lipman, Emilia Fox, Ed Stoppard, Julia Rayner, Jessica Kate Meyer and Michal Zebrowski.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Pianist
A very powerful movie, superbly acted.Very emotional and intense.Recommended for mature audiences - definitely not a teeny bopper movie. Adrien Brody gives an intense, very realistic performance.Great picture.Brings back memories of the war years that were both unpleasant and heroic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very moving experience
Even more so being the true story of the wartime life of Wladyslaw Szpilman, taken from his book. The acting of Adrien Brody was impeccable as was, in fact, that of all the cast including all the old favourites like Maureen Lipman and Frank Finlay. This is a film to be kept and viewed again and again, not least to remember the atrocities committed by the Nazis against the Jews in that epoch. The cruel way in which some of the Nazi officers amused themselves by forcing old and crippled Jews to dance for them was very saddening. It is rather sad that the sympathetic German officer who was kind to Wladyslaw Szpilman in the final days of the war was not recognised and his term of imprisonment reduced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie needs DVD release, but there is a VCD out there
This is a fun WWI movie from the 1970s that I enjoyed while growing up and while there is no DVD yet available there is a VCD out there that regularly appears on auction sites that will allow you to enjoy it on your DVD player.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mission incredible - with a distraction thrown in
The Michael York character in this 1971 movie is no James Bond type, as seen in "A View to a Kill" (1985), where airships were also key to the plot, yet it is clear that he was being forced to choose between the two major warring European powers during the First World War as regards his loyalties.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie from the eighties.
The first time I saw this was in 84' on ktla movies till dawn. it was magical.A movie that neither has good or bad guys. There are some of the most beautiful scenes like when bradamante rode past rogero about half way thru the film. The story line was simply great. The final scene still lingers in my mind. One day it will be released on DVD.It is too good of a movie not to be.considering the quality of movies that are being released today, I would hope that the day will come soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romatic at Heart
I couldn't believe it when I watch this movie still, I still love it. When the Prince of the Moore's and a Prince of the Christians and five of each of their fellow knights go for battle. Has some of the best fighting scenes, the best romance scenes. You got to see this movie. If you like a lot of fighting, handsome men and beautiul women, romance, this is your movie. You have to give it a try.

I decided to write this after reading the other two reviews.I've watched this movie ever since I was a kid, and I've always loved it.The movie is filled with a sense of magic in almost a fantasy world of reality in the Dark Ages. The movie is about love and how even though people may share different beliefs, there is always a soul mate out there waiting for them.If you love movies about knights, fantasy, magic, or love, than you'll love this movie. The point of the movie is that it has an enriched story of love and what some people will go through to keep or save that love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Slovik faced death with certainty & acceptance
My father was a WW2 Vet. If I was a male, I probably would have been drafted into the Viet Nam war. But I am female, and the conscientious Objectors were part and parcel of my collegiate aged generation. I do not believe Slovik was a 'whiner' or a coward. He faced death with certainty; front lines meant, as the movie portrayed 'uncertainty' of 'not knowing'.. so when he was made such a sick example of, by the military, he accepted being shot by his own American army as his plight, and, he took and accepted this more than anyone in my generation would have, or since.
5-0 out of 5 stars An ageless story of Generals and Grunts.
One and a half million men were rejected for psychological reasons during WWII. Hundreds of thousands suffered combat fatigue during combat.(Depends whose counting.) A confused General slaps soldiers in a field hospital for breaking under the stress of war. (We all learn that it is only a matter of time before all would break.) The medical men say breaking is normal and Generals say it is an act of cowardice. All this sound and fury boils down to this...Private Slovick the only man to be killed by his country for being human and too honest.5-0 out of 5 stars the execution of one miserable man
i'm an entusiast colector of world war II movies and i never see nothing like that before,i was a military at another country and another war{nicaragua}almost 25,000 of many young people die over there, there where many desertion too,but we never put nobody on front of fithing squad,i admire this private, because he prefer to die by his believe, than kill or be killed in action,in honor to the truth i think he was executed no by his desertion, but like he say by his criminal record,i do think ,the sistem was the one guilty because he recruit the man knowing his record. The problem is "the history don't make honor to desertors". ... Editorial Review

David Hare's Broadway play--about political idealism and the way some people always need to be fighting for a cause--was credibly transferred to the screen by director Fred Schepisi from Hare's screenplay. Meryl Streep (in the midst of a streak of movies that required accents) plays a British woman who fought for the French Resistance during World War II. When she returns to normal life in post-war England and marries a diplomat, she becomes something of a terror--speaking her mind when, of course, diplomacy dictates otherwise. Did she leave the best part of herself in France, where life was more meaningful and immediate? Hare's comment on Great Britain's post-war slide into Thatcherism, this film features a tough-minded (and not particularly likable) performance by Streep, who is actually quite good. It's a hard movie to embrace, but a well-made one nonetheless. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Streep gives her all in a very difficult role
Sumptuous film version of David Hare's play about a young and idealistic Englishwoman who experiences her glory-days whilst working for the Resistance in WW2, only to find disillusionment and unhappiness in the following years.Meryl Streep turns in a credible performance in the very difficult role of Susan Traherne.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Mackerel Sky
Meryl Streep gives a heartbreaking performance in this deeply affecting and brilliant film about a woman trapped forever in the past. Susan Traherne might appear on paper to be a selfish and unlikable woman, but Streep somehow manages to let the audience see her inner anguish and restlessness, and her quiet desperation at not being able to recapture the feeling of living life to its fullest; something she experienced during WWII as a Resistance fighter in France. It is one of the most exquisite performances ever captured on film.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Meryl Streep's finest performances and a really excellent film!
Plenty is one of my all-time favourite films. I loved this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary performances in sterling production
This is the performance of All My Sons to own since the play is done in its entirety, unlike the watered down 1948 film version where the role of Kate Keller is reduced to tatters. Here the play takes on full dimensions buoyed no doubt by the extraordinary performances of a cast consumed by their work.Special note must be given to Michael Learned who brings such power and intensity to the mother, she transcends her own mastery. And as the son of Steve Deever, the former partner of Joe Keller who is still serving prison time, Zselko Ivanek's George is a small gem. The vhs may be pricey but worth every penny. This is a production Arthur Miller would have cheered for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully performed play with a surprise ending
When I saw the name 'Aidan Quinn' on the cover of this movie, I rented it instantly. However, by the end of the film I was so taken aback by the shocking ending that I would recommend "All My Sons" to even people that are not familiar with Mr. Quinn. James Whitmore is outstanding as the WW II father who finally realizes how much his mistakes cost his family. Aidan Quinn and Michael Learned are memorable as the son and wife who remain in-the-dark to Whitmore's deeds up until the end when Whitmore's conscience begins to overwhelm him. The ending blew me away, and I am sure it will do the same to anyone who sees the film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miller's finest work
I haven't seen this work since it first came out, yet its impression has been burned into my memory.I will disagree with the other review only that individual performances CAN indeed be singled out.James Whitmore brings all of his charisma to the father's exterior. It is his performance that is the most demanding of all, yet the most sensitively underplayed.Michael Learned was astounding and electric with energy and neurosis... And very, very young, just out of diapers performances by Aidan Quinn and Joan Allen show just how much talent they had right from the start. This is a definitive production of Miller's most visceral work.Worth every penny of the (sadly) inflated price! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story of the Indianapolis
This movie is a very good adaptation of the events surrounding the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. I was impressed with the attention to detail that the producers paid in the movie. For example, it is known that the ship's doctor burned his hands to the point of uselessness while trying to open a door, and sure enough, this scene was excellently covered in the movie.Stacy Keach stars as Captain Charles McVay, and he does an excellent job throughout the film.Richard Thomas portrays the ship's doctor. The scenes of the sinking and the subsequent struggle to survive on the sea is vividly portrayed.I was also impressed with the attention payed to the rescue and Captain McVay's court martial. In fact, this movie does a better job of covering the court martial phase than many of the books I've read on this subject.I would highly recommend this film to anyone who knows or has read about the story of the USS Indianapolis.

I was interested in the Indianapolis disaster after seeing the movie Jaws, where it is discussed.I was hoping this VHS film would give me some more information, and it might have, if the tape had been of sufficient quality to actually watch.5-0 out of 5 stars Like JAWS, only real, and worse
This film is quite upsetting, perhaps because the real event on which it is based was probably worse. It is not as if the makers didn't do their best to tell this true horror story. I believe they did, or if the didn't,I don't wish to see a more upsetting version. Don't expect to sleep wellafter you see this. ... Read more

Forget Indiana Jones. This 1965 high adventure stars Frank Sinatra as the leader of a mass escape from a World War II POW camp in Italy. That mission accomplished, Old Blue Eyes has sundry adventures camouflaging the freed men as German soldiers, trying to fool the Gestapo, and finally doing battle with enemy planes and ground troops while trying to get a hijacked train through a blocked tunnel. Sinatra is in great form and director Mark Robson handles the endless chain of action set-pieces with panache. A great pulse-quickener.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exciting World War II Adventure Story With Frank Sinatra And Trevor Howard In Fine Form
The classic 1965 war story "Von Ryan's Express", based on the successful novel by David Westheimer would have to be one of my favourite World War II movies combining as it does all the necessary elements essential in such a story compelling viewing. We are treated throughout the films running time to plenty of well staged action sequences, exciting "close calls", for the lead actors, excellent photography and special effects along with enough character development to make you care about the characters involved. Frank Sinatra once again proves that he was that rare creation; a singer who was also a most capable actor and in "Von Ryan's Express", he has one of his best roles as the American POW who orchestrates a daring escape plan from German occupied Italy by highjacking a train transporting prisoners to Germany. Teamed here with veteran British actor Trevor Howard the pair work superbly together creating alot of the inner conflict in the story as the pair, although on the same side, repeatedly lock horns over the best approach to take in their escape plan while developing a deep respect for each other in the process. War movies don't come much more exciting than this one and combined with some of the most breathtaking photography shot on location in Italy, you have the perfect combination for a thrilling edge of the seat viewing experience.

One of the first books that I read as a teenager (that wasn't off the juvenile shelves) was "Von Ryan's Express" by David Westheimer. It was a best seller at the time and I soon discovered why.The key to the book was the extensive middle where the Allied prisoners take over a transport train one car at a time.It was a very suspenseful and engrossing story of one-on-one, hand to hand combat with everything at stake. Each of something like 22 cars is depicted with a writer's skill. When the movie came out, I went to see it with a friend. As the first railroad car was taken, I leaned over to him and said, "This is where it really gets exciting".Low and behold, after taking two or three cars, the prisoners jump all the guards at the next stop.So much for my expectations.
4-0 out of 5 stars In the same league as the great escape.
There are two great 'behind enemy lines pow escape' movies and the great escape is one and so is this.I don't like Sinatra's music but his ww2 movies were really good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mangled but not totally destroyed
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars We's all from Tennessee....
This movie is a real gem and John Huston does a remarkable job in creating a fairly realistic looking Civil War environment. You won't find any overweight re-enactors aiming their rifles at the sky and not showing any signs of fear. No this movie provides actors and men like Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin, who knew well what real war was all about. The battle scenes are quite good for the period in which they were filmed and certainly have a more realistic feel than some of the battle scenes depicted in more recent Civil War "epics".
5-0 out of 5 stars Audie Murphy's best film

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.
If you enjoy the comic antics of Jack Lemmon (Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men), give yourself a treat.Mr. Lemmon's earlier films are well written, campy, and just plain fun! Two of my favorite Lemmon films are HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE and THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY.Give yourself a fun filled evening.Send the kids out for pizza, turn off the phone, pop some popcorn, and curl up on the sofa with THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY. Don't expect a deep "meaningful" plot or some kind of political metaphor.Isn't it time for a good laugh, the way we use to?

5-0 out of 5 stars Jack Lemmon's WWII Adventure
Feb. 1943. The Japanese were stopped at Guadacanal and the Allies hunt for a bright young naval officer to lead an extremely delicate mission. Lt. Rip Crandall (Jack Lemmon) is the commander of their choice and this capable fellow strikes his head against every door-frame. He is so qualified that he has to consult a reference-book on "How to take command of a ship". The USS ECHO is, to put it euphemistically, "in a class by itself" and the "picked crew of specialists" liked life on a ship better than life in jail. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story!
I must admit that this wasn't the totally hilarious film I expected(most of the humor is contained in the first half of the film), but I found it a good story anyway. I like drama and action, especially in war movies, and this film has both. The story is engrossing, and it has some twists and surprises. I highly recommend it to any war movie fans! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jerry's last great comedy film
This movie has been making me laugh since I first saw it on TV in the mid 1970s. Jerry and his band of 4-F rejects put together a commando squad. They go behind enemy lines in an attempt to replace a German Field Marshal in this wild WWII romp. There are so many hysterical gags, it's impossible to single out one or two for review. Cameos by Joe Besser, Paul Winchell, and George Takei. Lots more familiar faces and voices from the 1960s. Fantastic chemistry between Jerry Lewis and Jan Murray. A little action thrown in for good measure, and the ending gives us a hint of a sequel that could have been in the works if the film had been a box office smash. Spend the money and enjo
