4-0 out of 5 stars good video
This video delivers exactly what it promises. These are defenses against a variety of grabs, chokes, etc.I have 13 years experience with different martial arts and I wanted something that would be a collection of techniques I have seen throughout the years and these are all excellent. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that for me Paul Vunak's "Street Safe" video is the best thing out there for overall defense, including grabs. However,I would recommend this one for anyone wanting a great collection of self defense techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good video
This is a great video using a different technique than karate. As they say in the video they take people's natural instincts and turn them into self defense techniques. I found myself saying, "gee, that's so simple and logical -- why didn't that ever occur to me?" This is top rated by everyone for a good reason -- it deals well with the subject. I thought a lot of time was spent on choke holds but I suppose that this is a favorite techique of bad guys so there must be a reason for all the time spent on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must have for all interested in self-defense!
I've seen numerous videos on self-defense and read countless books on the subject. Some teaches you complexe techniques that require years of training, others teach you moves that are simply unrealistic and ineffective in real life. This Krav Maga video, as opposed to many others, "actually" presents easy-to-learn techniques that can "really" be used in confrontations. There's no mumbo-jumbo, no fancy martial arts moves. The tape shows you simply what needs to be done in order to save yourself from some unpleasant medical treatment. A must have for all those who are looking for real-life self-defense and not some fancy Hollywood tricks that serve no other purpose that look good on the big screen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars kung fu:the legend begins
this is the one that you see in commercials and in other movies and in clips on the show of the same name.a very influential movie!theres a small kid who goes into kung fu training with an old blind man.then he gets big and goes to america after killing his masters killer.he gets a job in the railroad and runs into problem after problem the whole movie long!kids like it.its better than the karate kid movies and a lot of the newer jackie chan movies although jackie has better too.it beats out anything by chuck norris or van damme or segal.bruce lee does better.you can actualy learn a lot of the basic things about kung fu by listening to the old man talk.the star is david carridine.he does quite well in his role.i liked death race 2000,and the kill bill set better but liked this one better than cannonball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time
Excellent series still stands up for modern viewing. Still a refreshing take on the "Western" as a concept with some wonderful anti-racism statements. Only one clunker episode in the set: "The Tide," which seems more like a Bonanza script than anything else. High-calibre scripts and direction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tape!
David Carradine put together a very good video here.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy form - sad to say
I was very disappointed in the sloppy form (from the stretching exercises to the combination exercises). I expected a Master of Kung Fu to be consistent about every body movement. The stretching exercises were incredibly sloppy and demonstrated not by Carradine but by the students, maybe Carradine can't do the exercises anymore. I would recommend Rodney Yee's "Yoga for Strength" to see the proper form for most of the stretching exercises. I'll keep looking for a Kung Fu instructional tape showing correct form. As for Carradine's Tai Chi tape to accompany the Kung Fu tape, I much prefer Terry Dunn's Tai Chi. For the simple and important reason, NO SLOPPY MOVEMENTS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Martial Art Workout
I have studied the martial arts for 21 years. This video provides an excellent workout for the martial artist in every sense! The extremely thorough stretching routine insure that no injury will occur, and thestances and basic run through on the punches and kicks allow thepractitioner to become totally familiar with the basic techniques beforeputting them together in the combination excercises (similar to katas, orprograms for the Karate or Tae Kwon Do students out there). In his book"The Spirit of Shaolin" David Carradine said that this was the"yin" (hard) of the two videos (the Tai Chi being the"yang" or "soft") and that it is challenging and evenvigorous. I agree with this assesment and must give it my highest rating. of five stars. I expect to be using this video for a long time to come, andwill definately purchase another one when this one wears out. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Akira Kurosawa's extraordinary first feature concerns the genesis of the martial art, judo, in 1882.The film feels ancient, as though it were made long before the existence of cinema.Deceptively primitive and simple, it also has a starkly modern quality.Austere, mano a mano battle sequences shot in the shadow of night have a dreamlike aura.We are presented with one craggy, fearsome warrior's face after another. An eerie soundtrack adds another layer to the film's distinctive ancient/modern tone.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The directorial debut of the legendary Akira Kurosawa
"Sanshiro Sugata" ("Judo Saga") is more of historical than artistic importance as the first directorial effort of the legendary Akira Kurosawa. The title character (Susumu Fujita)is a young man, strong but stubborn, who comes to the city to serve as an apprentice in a jujitsu school. But when he sees the judo master Shogoro Yano (Denjiro Okochi) in action he begs to become a student of the more spiritual art.Sanshiro's struggle then becomes the quest to achieve "satori," the Buddhist ideal of enlightenment that is the direct experience of realizing and accepting the law of Nature, while learning the techniques of judo. However, the spiritual nature of the film is tempered by the pragmatic goal demanded by the Ministry of Information during World War II: by demonstrating a balance between strength and control judo can be used by the city police for physical training. On a more personal level Sanshiro can earn the respect from his old teacher (Takashi Shimura) at the jujitsu school and win the hand of the old man's daugther, Sayo (Yukiko Todoroki). The obstacle to these quests is Gennosuke Higaki (Ryunosuke Tsukigata), the master student of jujitsu.4-0 out of 5 stars Akira Kurosawa's first film, from 1943
Martial arts films have come a long way since this curious historical drama, the first feature film directed by the up-and-coming Akira Kurosawa.Filmed and edited during wartime, it dramatizes the story of the late 19th Century development of judo as a breakaway form of the jiu-jitsu school of martial arts.Without the benefit of Hong Kong style wire-works or the flashy acrobatics of Bruce Lee, et al, the combat looks mostly like wrestling or sumo... Which, perhaps, back in the 1880s, it was.Takashi Shimura introduces his role as an older wise man, in custody over the spiritual growth of a younger firebrand; the plot has a bit of a Romeo and Juliet tone to it, as the young champion of judo falls in love with the daughter of a rival school's sensei.Fans who have seen Kurosawa's glorious later films will notice right away the relative lack of grace here, yet as a directorial debut this is pretty stunning and ably introduces the visual poetry and various themes that he would so ably explore in years to come. Also, military censors apparently mucked with the movie for various reasons, and interrupted the flow of the narrative (most notably in a couple of sequences deleted in their entirety and replaced by silent-movie style placards explaining the absent action, and in the ending, which seems rushed and inexplicable).Still, any Kurosawa fan will find this film quite rewarding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Germination to a masterpiece
See it - you won't be disappointed. Definitely a must see if you're a Kurosawa fan! Despite being his maiden film, Kurosawa's mastery clearly shines through. Indeed, there is even a certain purity in his artistry in this early effort.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi for Arthritis 2
12 Movement Forms (on the right & left sides) also incorporated much different Qi Gong practice like Tai Chi for Arthritis (12 forms). Is an ancient China Martial Art (Kung Fu) and it is a gentle, flowing moving meditation, for health. It is also done for health and fitness in China and the USA! Not only is it proven by scientific studies to be effective for reversing illness. It also possesses many other advantages making it an eminently suitable exercise for many. Tai Chi has appeared in traditional Western medical journals. The May 1996 issue of The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reported on a study conducted at Emory University. The studies show that Tai Chi can reverse over 600 illnesses. Lowers blood pressure while improving balance and self-confidence and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Pleased
A year ago,I purchased the first companion video and worked on memorising all of the forms. This year I was ready to tackle the next set.Tai Chi II was actually easier for me to follow.Pleasant music.Kind instructor.Very profitable.I wish there were a video of same Dr. Lam doing the forms in natural settings such as Australia's beautiful parks. There is a definite sense of achievement in being able to move in concert with the video.Calming and has helped my balance and flexibility. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not good, but still kinda fun to watch
Karate Cop is one of those rare films that boarder on the side of awful fun. Low budget and old plot are the first downfalls of this film. A greatscene in this film is when the Asian cop and his African-American partnercome out of a bar totally intoxicated. The both men head for home - walkingtheir separate ways. The African-American cop is ambushed - and proceeds torun about 15 miles in five minutes. He follows this up with what seems like5000 punches, kicks and whatever else fills time until he finally gets it -he's killed. I still think that he died of exhaustion rather than brutalforce of the men chasing him. Remember that this guy was totally plasteredcoming out of the bar and out of nowhere he turns into Bruce Jenner! Add tothis dubbing of all dialogs and you'll realize why you can't get this onDVD. I found this movie to be fun, incredibly awful fun...this is a greatSunday afternoon movie to watch with your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten classics
I was looking through my old videos and ran across this old classic. Wow, this movie is amazingly thorough and just plain beautiful. I hear Norris might reprise his role on Broadway. Forget this Walker garbage.

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie was bad
This is not a good movie. The only reason you should have this movie is if you are a SERIOUS Norris fan.The camera work could have been much bettter.Bottom line:There are much, MUCH better action films out there. Buy one of those. If you want to see this film, rent it, don't buy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tai Chi video out there
Dr. Yang has included enough information in this video learn from for the rest of my life. If you can't get the DVD, which has even more additional content, this VHS still has a lot in it. His teaching is clear, and the layout of the video is simple and easy to follow. His way of teaching always works for both beginners and intermediate students alike, and he always drops in a little something for advanced students as well. Great place to start learning real Tai Chi.4-0 out of 5 stars What to expect ?
Learn the tradition! Not only an instructional video, but a living document designed to preserve a cultural tradition, the Yang Style Long Form, as passed down from Yang, Pan-Hou (of the original Yang Family Lineage)! But do not be fooled! This is not some archaic relic of a bygone age. It is a living, vital art! Practice of this form will bring you a healthy and relaxed body, a clear mind, and a strong sense of martial intent! This Taijiquan form, unlike so many others, has not lost its martial arts essense.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding
I must say when I read the reviews I was really skeptical, and I thought that maybe the ones who bought the tapes were the same sensei's students to promote his school and gain favor. To my surprise all what they said it's just true. The ability of Mr. Cunningham is amazing. He trully knows how to explain a technique and how to make it work. Also for my surprise the video was almost 2 hours I believe, but two hours of great instruction, step by step, no boring repetitions but without being in a hurry as well. He takes his time to be sure you understand what he is trying to prove. You'll learn the traditional kata, counters to this( I wasn't even expecting this)and counters to counters. To sum it up.. this is a great well rounded video, great to improve your skills or simply add it to your curriculum if you practice other system. Keep up the good work Mr. Cunningham. I'm already looking to get the Dai Nikkyo.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
Both Volume 1 & 2 are excellent productions with very good content. Oshiro Sensei is one of the best! I am amazed that with his knowledge, speed, ability, and power, that he does not have one of the largest Shorin Ryu organizations in America. If I trained in Shorin Ryu, this would be my teacher. GREAT JOB TSUNAMI, I sincerely hope you produce more videos featuring Oshiro Sensei.
