    Editorial Review

Hearing-impaired (and Academy Award-winning) actress Marlee Matlin bookends two "Blue's Clues" episodes and gives the tape its theme by teaching Steve some American Sign Language. In the first story--in which Steve and friends attempt to ascertain where a certain blue dog would like to eat her snack--Steve teaches some signs and follows signs of another kind on poster boards. The written signs, of course, lead to the canine's clues, designated by her famous paw print. Blue Scadoo finds Steve jumping into Jane's book and meeting her deaf friend Carly, who tells a story in sign language. In the second episode, Steve tries to figure out where Blue wants to go by using a map the cunning dog has left behind. He eventually jumps into a Candyland-style game, finds Blue with the Gingerbread Girl, and winds up going to the library. Children ages 2 to 5 will enjoy and learn from this 51-minute video. 2-0 out of 5 stars Expected More Signing
My daughter is deaf and loves watching blue's clue, so I was some what disappointed with the limited signing. There was a small protion of consistent signing during story time, but that was a small segment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
When they say All Kinds of Signs. They mean all Kinds of Signs. My daycare kids love this video. It's really just induction to sign language as well as other signs such as street signs, bathroom sign etc. Blue's Clues - All Kinds of Signs is a cute helpful video just don't expect it to be a great sign language video.
4-0 out of 5 stars More on ASL for kids
This is an entertaining video. My son loves Blue's Clues...but not until he was about 2 yrs old.Earlier, he did not "get it" in terms of "finding a paw print". Another great Blue's episode that I am not sure is still out is "ABCs & 123s". At 25 months, I swear my son understands how READING works from this video! The counting part is really good too.My son tries to count everything! However, for those of you looking for more ASL sign language for kids, the BEST by far, are the series called Signing Times.website is www.signingtime.com There are six videos/DVDs in the series that increase in complication. The first one is "basic" signs like milk, eat, apple, more, etc.I started showing this to my son at 8 months and he was signing to ME from the highchair at 10 months. Then, I added the next volume(please, thank you, share, etc) to his viewing and so on.At 25 months, he knows over 50 signs and uses them. He sometimes can't make the sign exactly right with his hands...but,I know what he means to say and that is the goal (increased communication between you)!I must say, I've learned all the signs myself! Her style of teaching is entertaining and it sinks in! www.signingtime.com check it out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great beginner DVD
I really enjoyed viewing the DVD and find it is a good start for a beginner. The lessons progress in a logical manner and the ASL Alphabet is presented very well.If you do not learn the first time around, you can select the portion of the DVD to review over and over.Once you progress in ASL, the DVD becomes less useful, but still entertaining and helpful in understanding the Deaf culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome and entertaining way to learn!
It's a really good movie for most of the basics and important things in sign language. It's fun to watch, you should watch it over and over and that's how you learn. It also teaches you a little about deaf culture which is also important, not only knowing how to sign, but knowing about deaf people.I give it two thumbs up!

    Editorial Review

This total immersion approach to language means that no English isspoken on this video, and only the occasional sentence is translated onscreen. Instead, viewers are treated to five sections of objects, concepts, or actions while a woman identifies them in Spanish. The first section shows a boy (niño), various people, and animals eating (comer) and an apple (manzana) and then puts it all together (El niño come la manzana!). Thesame method is used for numbers, colors, manners, and phrases and then another section of familiar words and phrases. The 40-minute video comes with an introduction and the lessons spelled out in a fold-out cardboard display attached to the video box. This is a serious effort meant to teach children a second language while they are still quite young. But that won't stop children from enjoying the brightly colored video of animals, toys, and a multiracial cast of kids. Ages 1-5. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
My kids, who are 4 and 2 1/2, love these Bilingual baby videos. They are always asking me to watch them.I know that they are learning from them since they use the words daily, especially the colors and numbers.I definately recommend them.

3-0 out of 5 stars not very interesting
This is an OK video, but not worth all the high marks it has earned. It has one monotone womans voice saying spanish words for actions shown on the screen. There really isn't much action or "feeling" in the voice. Some of the images are confusing It reminds me of my adult Spanish learning tapes which are very boring. MY 2 year old loves videos but she doesn't seem overly impressed with this one. She does perk up at some of the images (ballons, dog, kittens, exc..) but overall there isn't much to keep her attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars same as Brainy Baby Spanish DVD

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I bought this WHS, when my daughter was 1 year old. Next week she will be 3 and she knows all the words from the video. She watches it max. twice a month. It is like a vocabulary builder, simple, clear and understandable. I teaches more languages for my daughter and however I have only this video and 2 cd-s to teach russian, it is more effective than dozens of spanish or french materials. The video does not use ciril letters and it can cause dissatisfaction for native russian speaker parents (but not for the kids :-).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool!!
We're adopting a baby from Russia & want to teach him as much Russian as possible. He hasn't arrived yet, but we've previewed the video. It really seems great!!It shows a word & then illustrates it (i.e., "boy"...then shows different ages of boys while repeating the word....in the corner at one point, the word "boy" in english will appear for parents to understand what exactly the word is). There is also a little paper guide to go along with it.We're looking forward to using it with our son!!:) ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful as a signing video
This video MAY have its place, but teaching signs isn't it.However, my baby loves watching scenes of other kids at play, and was as captivated by the kids in this video as she would be with any other, non-signing video.
3-0 out of 5 stars Timing and Accompaniment Might Make the Difference
If you have other signing videos and environments for your child, he or she may not like Talking Hands much at first. He or she might come to appreciate it over time, however... quite a bit. Other reviews here describe its content fully; I write here to testify that your child's first impressions of it can change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Language Immersion for Young Children
I bought this for my 3 year old twins, who are learning Italian with me.It is recommended for children ages 1-5.It features real images (not cartoons) and shows three situations while the narrator repeats the word in Italian three times. So an apple may be shown three different times and the narrator will say the word "mela" three times.Images and words will be shown/said to complete a sentence. So they will show a dog and say the word "cane", then show children playing and say the word "giocare" and then show a ball and say the word "palla".Then, they form those words into a sentence, "The dog plays with the ball." all in Italian "Il cane gioca con la palla".When the sentence is said, they quickly flash the sentence in English for the parent, but are careful not to interrupt the flow of the child's concentration by flashing words in English during the individual images. However, they do show the words in Italian as they show the various images.

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie once seen you'll never forget it

5-0 out of 5 stars Still entrancing over 50 years later
My high school French teacher took the whole class to see this picture and I found it charming and fell in love with Danielle Darrieux. I enjoyed it even more a half century later, I was impressed with the excellent picture quality. All the actors spoke beautiful French, clear enough to make it an excellent teaching lesson. I admire the courage of my French teacher given some controversy at the time. The music in the VCR soundtrack seems rather poorly preserved, perhaps a DVD recording at some time could help improve the music quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A feast for the eyes
"La Ronde" succeeds on many levels. The screenplay, adapted from the play by Arthur Schnitzler, is witty and provocative. It has a lightness of touch and delicate irony that is peculiar to the French. The performances are excellent-especially Danielle Darrieux's portrayal of an adulterous wife. However, the real distinction of this movie is it's visual style. The black and white cinematography is anything but flat. There are layers and textures in this film that are a feast for the eyes. The sumptuous set decorations are beautifully ornate-almost baroque."La Ronde" is replete with camera angles reminiscent of "Citizen Kane."There is a fantastic overhead shot of a young courtesan whose head is in the center of hanging light fixture-or chandelier. This aspect is that of a poet who is idealizing her.It is an absolutely brilliant moment. Ophuls has a wonderful sense of movement. The long tracking shots and circular motion complement, instead of detract from, the action and emotion of the story. Particularly dazzling are the carousel scenes where circles run counter to one another. One might say that the omnipresent narrator is rather intrusive, but he grows on you. He's French, after all...... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars AnOKDVD. There are much better options now...
Generally speaking, This DVD is OK. I used it with my oldest child...but not too much because it did not really manage to keep her engaged; and to be honest, I don't think that repetition of vocabulary words is the best way to learn a language. After all, that is not the way we learn to speak. Also, the music is not great...and the speaker, even if she has a good accent, still is not native...
4-0 out of 5 stars Music too loud!
Overall is a good teaching tool, if a bit boring. It took several tries to finally get my 2 year old son to look at it for more than 5 minutes. The slow pace seems geared for babies only, as the title suggest.
1-0 out of 5 stars BORING- NEEDS EXCITEMENT!!

The first hint that this isn't your normal, staid Spanish review courseis the subtitle that's flashed across the screen: the "Salsa-riffic World ofSpanish." The Standard Deviants, a cast of ebullient young performers whobelieve no joke is too bad as long as its memorable, bring their talents to acourse in introductory Spanish in this video. Lots of flashy graphics keepthings lively, but the course material itself is rock solid--it's been approvedby an academic panel. Following some basic information on where Spanish isspoken, the real lessons begin with instruction on pronunciation and the Spanishalphabet (which, of course, uses some typographical symbols not used inEnglish). A bit of vocabulary is imparted as the pronunciation lessons progress, and after some pointers on capitalization, simple lessons in practicalconversation begin. The video proceeds to the inescapable bane of many languagestudents, conjugating verbs. While this production won't be a substitute for anactual course in Spanish (and the cast specifically points out that it doesn'tintend to be), the presentation is consistently energetic, with the lessons easyto remember. Someone who is interested in learning (or reviewing) basic materialwill no doubt gain from watching it. Read more

Normally I would have given a 5 star rating BUT I first bought Advanced Spanish - Beyond the Basics. I liked it so much I bought Advanced Spanish - Verbs, Spanish 1&2 and Habla Espaol?. My tape of Advanced Spanish - Verbs is IDENTICAL to Advanced Spanish - Beyong the Basics. In fact it had that as the title for the video when you view the tape. The DVD of Habla Espaol? is IDENTICAL to the Spanish 1 tape except for some quizzes. I wrote the company with this complaint and got no answer. If you go to their site you will find about 20 Advanced Spanish DVDs that have descriptions that all appear to be the same DVD with different titles. I would definitely not buy Spanish 1. Instead buy the Habla Espaol? DVD. If you already have Spanish 1, you won't get much from this DVD. Other than this, I would be very careful buying from this company. ... Read more

I bought this video for my nine year old sisters (I took French, so of course they want to copy me).My sisters are homeschooled by my mother. My mother and sisters viewed it. My mother knows no French besides croissant, and my sisters know some French songs from the Family Circus Lyric Language cassette (which I highly reccommend).Anyway, my mother and sisters learned from it.It goes too fast, though, and it attempts to cover too much in 30 minutes. My mother was lost at some points. It's actually humorous. Not bad for "edutainment." It's a pretty good introduction (or supplement) for junior high to adult, and a good supplement for third/fourth grade and up.Use the Family Circus Lyric Language French cassette for an introduction (as well as any french kids' songs you can get your hands on) for younger kids. ... * This video is good in that it is suitable for toddlers (unlike many other bilingual videos for children) & introduces colors and other words in a fairly easy way to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!! thanks. . .
Ok, I disagree with the lukewarm reviews this video has recieved. If your child is old enough to read hebrew pass this one on but if you havetoddler who is being introduced to the language . . oh boy this one is perfect!! I have a number of hebrew videos (mostly from Israel) and while I am sure my son will learn from them when he gets older, so far they are flops in teaching him anything. The bilingual baby video is like a mini language immersion (try baby ulpan) and my son has already picked up all the colors, numbers and most of the words. He doesn not confuse them with the english at all and I highly reccommend this to everyone. I haven't found any other video like this out there.3-0 out of 5 stars Chetze v chetze Hebrew video

3-0 out of 5 stars a little fast paced
my daughter loves signing videos and does like this one although I tend to think that it's a little fast paced. The repetition is very good and beneficial but the speed of the repetition is too fast.I also think the women that do the signs are a little annoying but it's probably due again to the pace of the video.Regardless, my daughter has found this video helpful and has learned a few words that she hadn't known before.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good teaching guide for those of us with sign language literacy
I purchased this as well as volume 2 and have been nothing but disappointed. I am extremely versed in both English and ASL as I've grown up with a deaf sister for over 37 yrs. The signs are silly. The teachers go from teaching "mother" to teaching "cows". They even teach such silly things that are common place such as eyes, nose and mouth that we all teach to our babies as they grow. I found that I am better off teaching my babies the sign myself (now that I am home more and not working 60 hours a week) since it is correct and not contradicting as are most of the signs in these videos. I warn others to NOT purchase these as they are awful.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Say It With A Sign, Vol. 1 & 2
Having these two DVDs has been a wonderful experience for our grand-daughter!We started playing the first vol. when she was 6 mo. and she's been watching the second Vol. for some time too. She claps when she first hears the music and watches them entirely. She has been signing the basics and when she first did 'butterfly' we all cheered! Now at almost one year she signs and tries to say the word as well and her parents are thrilled with her progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
When I watched this video with my two-year-old daughter I intially thought the video was cheesy and silly. However, my daughter loves it. She dances and sings to the music and asks to watch it almost everyday. The bright colors, dancing, and catchy songs keep her attention while teaching basics such as numbers, letters, seasons, body parts, etc. I would definitely recommend this tape for children six and younger.

3-0 out of 5 stars You may want to pass on this one...
If you're over 18 or if you're buying it for smaller children (say, under 8.)The graphics are really cheesy--think 1970's disco--and the music sounds like every synthesized excercise class you've ever seen on TV.There's very little "Rock" in this video. However, the "Learn" is there, if you can get past the cheddar. The vocabulary is good...basics from numbers to "pass the carrots" and "please be quiet" is covered. This would be a good introduction or review for middle school or high school students. The video is not really geared for younger children and can become boring. My 3 year old will watch it for a while--especially the number portion...but then she (and I) get bored and attention wanders. The graphics are repetitive and the music can be soporific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Pre-K thru beginning Adult
Our 4 yr girl and 5 yr son love this video, and so do I. Even our 18 month will watch it. Good visuals, fun music, lively scripting. Starts at a very easy level and builds progressively. Read more

    Editorial Review

In the opening jingle, the oddball lyrics "Careful or you're speakingSpanglish, then your grade will cause you anguish" provide a glimpse into thepremise of this production from the Standard Deviants. In this, their secondtrip to the "Salsa-riffic World of Spanish," the energetic young cast performsskits and unleashes some clever and elaborate computer graphics while providinga reliable review course in the Spanish language. Starting with what's billed as"Really Basic Stuff," the cast reviews practical matters such as how to count, talks about what time it is, and discusses the weather. Moving into moreadvanced material, there are pointers on grammar, with a focus on the rules ofparticular verbs. It should be noted that the curriculum has been approved by apanel of professors, but the cast members tend to present the material in arelaxed format, which often involves the use of costumes and some bad (andhopefully memorable) jokes. Each major portion of the program is followed by aquiz, which the student can either take or skip, and the entire DVD concludeswith an exam titled "La Tormenta." This DVD isn't a substitute for classes inSpanish, but as review material the unorthodox presentation would be helpful toa student. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like having a tutor to give you that little extra boost.
So a couple reviewers on Amazon actually expected to be able to have entire conversations in Spanish after watching one DVD?Give me a break!
2-0 out of 5 stars COULD BE BETTER
This tape does teach you some words and phrases but not at all enought to carry a real conversation.

Numbers and shapes are the focus of this third Babyscapes video, set entirely to the music of Mozart in deference to the studies that show Wolfgang Amadeus has a particularly potent effect on young minds. Simple animation and repetition are the key here, with parachuted numbers 1-10 falling, in order, out of a dirigible, while children's voices count. They fall again silently so your youngsters may count by themselves. As with each segment in this 26-minute tape, the process repeats once or twice more. Numbers also appear on blocks and in fireworks. Then it's time to learn six shapes, including star and diamond, which appear first with a shape sorter, then as clay pressed into shape by a machine, and, finally, bouncing into a lake. All this with pieces such as the Piano Sonata in C Major, the firstmovement of Symphony No. 40, and the "Champagne Aria" from Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars -
I didn't think much of this video when I first received it (very basic)... but my son (20 months) really likes it and all the repetition helps kids learn the numbers and shapes...

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice!
This Miracle of Mozart Numbers and Shapes along with the ABC video are among the best videos I have. If you never own other videos, at least own these two plus Leapfrog Letter Factory! I have collected NUMEROUS Number and ABC Videos (foster kids) over the past 20 years and have to say that I prefer these over ALL of the other videos except for the Leapfrog videos (but these are IMO a great start/foundation to use for letter recognition before they see Leapfrog Letter Factory). I began playing the videos for my own child at 9 months mostly because of the wonderful music. Between these Babyscapes videos and the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics toy, my child knew Numbers 1-10, and all of her ABC's AND their sounds at age 17 months. That is not to say that your child will (and it doesn't matter) but just to say that this is QUALITY television! I could have sat her in front of Elmo or Barney at these ages and she would have learned...what? She laughs at her ABC's and loves to say them! I hung ABC flash cards as a wall border in her room with poster putty. She looks at and points to her letters after I put her in bed. Later, from the living room, I can hear her calling out her letters (like counting sheep?)before she falls asleep! So cute! After kids learn all their letters, a great and fun video for learning letter sounds is Leapfrog Letter Factory and Leapfrog Word Factory (phonics!). I don't force early learning on my child; however, some opportunity/exposure is a good thing and I think most kids will show an interest in these videos if they aren't first overly-inoculated with hyper TV monsters like Elmo. How can kids be attentive and calm if their TV role models are bouncing off the walls? Get this video, play it, relax and enjoy. Don't damage your kids by "forcing" early education on your timetable. Give them some opportunity/exposure and have fun with it!

    5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!! EXCELLENT VIDEO/VIDEOS!! 5 STARS
I am very happy with this tape my son is almost 3 now and he still loves it!! I started him out on this tape along with the ABC's offered by Mozart in Spanish and in English version. My son was 3-4 months old when I purchased the tapes. I would play them over and over. Id start with a Spanish tape then does the English version. At first I was getting discouraged with them due to I thought my son was not picking up any of the in Spanish. He got the English version down. By the time he was a year old. One day hubby and I were having a conversation and there was our son saying his ABC's in Spanish soon after he was saying his numbers and shapes! By the time he was a 1 -2 he was saying his letter, numbers and shapes in English and Spanish. There are times my son chooses to play with his toys but as long as he hears it is still learning them. If you decided on these tapes they are a wonderful start. It will take a bit of time and even if they don't seem interested in looking at the letters they will still hear it over and over. I also purchased other Spanish tapes in which I will right reviews on as soon I am done with this review. What a great introduction to the Spanish language. Worth every penny!... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best 1st french dvd
I wish there were more french educational tapes, so in the meantime I like this the best....my son is only 13 months so I'm still not sure if it's sinking in but I know he watches it very attentive just as he watches his einstein tapes...thats a good sign!

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful! And this is an exact copy of the Brainy Baby video
First of all, the above is true. I made the poor mistake of buying both --mostly because this one was so terrible and I thought the other one would be better. It was terrible for the following reasons: 1. The narrator is NOT a native French speaker as the video advertises and thus she mispronounces many of the words 2. I also really hate the fact that the words are not introduced with their articles, as they are supposed to be in French. You never just say "ball" in French as we do in English, you would say either "un ballon" or "le ballon" ("the ball", "a ball"). Moreover, without the articles, you don't learn the gender of the nouns, something we don't have in English and one of the most difficult things for us to learn in foreign languages. I am STILL struggling with genders after 20 years of speaking french (because I am not a native speaker but have lived in France for many years). More aggregiously, instead of including one of the many charming French childrens songs, they include a translation of "Mary had a Little Lamb (it doesn't even rhyme). This is all quite disappointing bc the whole point of teaching your child a foreign language at this age is that they don't need to learn it in translation (or in an English language context) they can learn it within the French language and cultural context. Please, don't waste your money. I can only imagine that the Spanish language version contains all of these same problems, by the way...

5-0 out of 5 stars Some like it, some don't
I began showing this video to my daughter when she was 6 mos. old (once a day) and two years later she still loves it. She will stop whatever she is doing and sit down and listen from beginning to end.On the other hand, my 1 year old daughter has never been interested in it-- even though I introduced the video in the same way as I had with my older daughter. As for me-- I like the music, the format, and the fact that they do not introduce too much information. ...
