"I've never seen a woman who was more like a man," a character observes of Vienna (Joan Crawford), who has just opened a saloon that hasn't exactly endeared itself to the local townspeople. Emma (Mercedes McCambridge), the local sexually repressed, lynch-happy harpy, is particularly displeased. Vienna is wooed both by the Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and by Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), a peripatetic tough guy-turned-troubadour with whom she has a past.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Guitar - The spoof musical
Very well put together spoof of westerns put togetheras a musical.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sex, dominant women and death, 50's style!
Emotions run high in a small western town where the civilizing influence of the railroad has not quite arrived.Untamed outlaws rob the stagecoach and the local bank, and frontier justice in the form of lynching is still a matter of course.
5-0 out of 5 stars Joan At Her Best!

They don't make 'em like this anymore. Well, John Waters might, if he ever had a big enough budget. A steamy "inside look" at the alternately sleazy and glamorous world of catfighting, backbiting show-biz starlets, this Hollywood hit from the bestselling novel by Jacqueline Susann is a high-gloss camp artifact--a time capsule (or some kind of capsule, anyway)--from the screwy '60s, when a broad was a broad, a bitch was a bitch (whether "her" name was Neely O'Hara or Ted Casablanca), and a "doll" was a prescription drug. These dames of whine and poses obsessed over their bust lines, booze, and barbiturates. The once-shocking and scandalous language and behavior of these Broadway babes has been eclipsed by Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL
This terrible movie has singing!Bad singing, and lots of it!Overacted, trite, and BORING!All those good reviews, I thought it would be campy and cool, but it's NOT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Valley of the Dolls
I have always enjoyed watching this movie, with so many great stars, some whom are no longer with us; never owned it on video, now I have it on DVD, great price too!! It was worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20th C. Fox, What took you so long?!
You either love the movie or you don't. If you're a VoD lover, the Special Edition 2-disk release is worth every cent. The film is beautifully restored to its "Color by De Luxe" and Panavision widescreen glory. (My VHS tape is on a barge making its way to the Staten Island landfill as I type this). The second disk includes karioke renderings of songs along with several documentaries and featurettes (all listed above). My favorite of these is "Jacqueline Susann and Valley of the Dolls," which has generous film clips depicting the chain-smoking failed-actress-cum-bestselling-author speaking for herself and coming across as, more than anything, a highly committed and indefatigable professional writer (who used a different color of typing paper for each of her six drafts of the manuscript). It's easy to see how this no-nonsense, get-it-done schlockmeister got under skin the procratinating perfectionist and celebrity syncophant Truman Capote. (I was surprised to see no mention of their long-standing public rivalry anywhere among the DVD extras.)

Editorial Review

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Go To Funerals.
Harold and Maude is Hal Ashby's 1971 cult hit. Dividing critics, the film nevertheless collected a massive following, spawned a play on Broadway, and has also given birth to new phrases, "Harolding" and "Maudism".
5-0 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST films to help you face living
Prior to VHS or DVD - back in 1971-75 - when movie theaters (remember those, the ones where it was only $1 for two films and a short and the films were shown in BIG theaters - so what if the sound wasn't Dolby or DTS - films were still films not; just 1 of 10 stock plots enhanced by computer special effects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still Quirky and Funny Black Comedy Tells the Ultimate Opposites-Attracts Love Story
This 1971 black comedy is still a stitch, even if it doesn't feel as audacious as I'm sure it once did. Directed by the maverick Hal Ashby, it is the epitome of all opposites-attract love stories as a twenty-year old depressive connects with a 79-year old life-loving woman. They actually bond over their mutual interest in death, as they keep showing up at the same funerals. However, the root of their respective interests couldn't be more different - Maude shows up to reconfirm how lucky she feels to be alive, while the hearse-driving Harold simply likes the morbidity of it all.

This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. Of course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Directed by Philippe de Broca and set during World War I, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'King of Hearts' is King in My Heart
I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Movies Ever
Terry Gilliam is my favorite director and here he is at his best. At first the movie just seems like a dark comedy but as you watch later on you realize the absolute genius and how close this is to reality. Even if you don't really understand Brazil(and I don't quite understand it either) you can still admire the amazing art in the film and just some of the amazing visuals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ehm...what the hell?!
This is the sort of movie where if you go "nah, didn't really like it" people will just say that you didn't get it as if you're some sort of moron, who's incapable of comprehending a movie with a more complex plot than Star Wars. The movie does have a couple of upsides (that's why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star) namely Michael Palin and the stunning visuals. The rest is dismal at best. The movie is way too long and I felt no connection to the characters whatsoever. I also don't think that Gilliam is some sort of visionary for creating this movie...does the # "1984" ring a bell? Now that was a visionary book while this is a halfhearted attempt to copy it (along with some personal additions here and there).

4-0 out of 5 stars Stormy And Love
9 1/2 weeks, as a frank depiction of the dynamics of sexual power, is a thought-provoking exploration of these aspects of eros. This film reveals the anatomy of a stormy and obsessive love affair between a recently divorced art dealer who is quite repressed and a rich, emotionally chilly stockbroker. The film is distinctive visual and aural textures by the artful direction of Adrian Lyne. ... In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Horror Classic.
Even though it seems cheesy, even laughable today, there's no denying "The Evil Dead" is still a landmark moment in the horror genre. Made for virtually no budget by a group of struggling young filmmakers straight out of college, "The Evil Dead" became one of the most original films in the horror genre as well as films in general, and is still vastly entertaining today.

4-0 out of 5 stars SLAPSTICK HORROR: A FUN WATCH
For those who have never seen the film, it is a b-grade horror flick that deviates from many in the horror genre. First of all, it is not meant to be taken seriously, as Sam Raimi puts a lot of comical twists into this film. Also, while the film is listed as "EVIL DEAD II," it is in fact a remake and much better upgrade of the first "Evil Dead" film. There is a lot of gore in this film to be sure [b-grade style] however, there are plenty of gags and laughter also.
4-0 out of 5 stars Evil Dead Rocks
Classic horror film sequel/remake.Did not realize that this was basically a "do-over" of the first Evil Dead.Extras were interesting and normally I pass over them. Now I MUST see Army of Darkness to see how it all ends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Today's scary movies aren't this good
Did I say scary? Yeah, this movie is a little scary, not too much though. But it's more frightening than most of today's "scary" movies. It's also much more enjoyable.

You either love Russ Meyer's garishly sexist movies about bodacious babes and priapic men or you find them utterly disgusting. The response to his work is that clear-cut. This film, which features a screenplay by critic Roger Ebert, barely qualifies as a sequel to the film based on Jacqueline Susann's trashy bestseller. Rather, it's a broad, trashy remake on its own terms about what happens to a trio of female rock musicians when they leave the Midwest and head for Hollywood. Sex, drugs, murder--the only thing it doesn't have is cannibalism, the gold standard when it comes to trashy entertainment. Read more

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess'sfamous novel is a masterpiece.Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time, Excellent Kubrick Film
First off, this was not an easy bood to make into a movie, but Stanly Kubrick did an excellent job of doing so, not cutting out too many of the details either. This movie was way ahead of it's time, with excellent cinemetography, great acting, and excellent adaptation to script of a book that tells a tale of young Alex and his gang in a world he live raise "ultraviolence".A nice glimpse into the mind of an Antisocial.Rent this, Buy this, worth owning. One of the many of a series of Excellent Kubrick films of the 70's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second movie in a very special trilogy.
I ama fan of Stanley Kubrick, and I can see something very special about this movie, that makes me consider this one as the second installment of a so called, by myself, "trilogy". 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange & The Shining, they three share a feeling of loneliness, a sense of an external consciousness who is watching, from outside the Universe, the characters in the films, there is a feeling of a paranormal environment, manifest by the lighting, the sharp contrast of colors white, blue, red and fog in some of the scenes. And, this special environment is made even more surreal by the very special soundtracks of "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti , "Timesteps" by Wendy Carlos, or thescore in The Shining by Carlos' couple too. Perhaps these three stories are part of the intervention of the Black Monoliths on the development of Mankind...Who knows? Buy these movies, they are highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars great film by kubrick but what else is new
this film is a has a very nice story about a man named alex who loves to rape woman and fighting/stealing,but that all changes when he goes to jail. then while in jail he hears about a thing that a doctor is doing to stop people from being bad. so later the doctor picks alex to be like a ginny pig for this test. he is forced to watch horrable things while hes eyes are forced open. after getting these test alex can one longer be bad because if he does he gets real sick..

4-0 out of 5 stars A good movie but depressing
The is the story of Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols and Nancy Spungen an American heroin addict. The movie pretty much is how they met and a lot of drugging and yelling. In it's own strange way it's compelling to watch but it's definitely not for everyone. Courtney Love had a very small part in it. I bet she had less than a minute on screen. Before she showed up I thought she would have been a great Nancy. If they made this five years later I bet she would have got the part.
5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS HUMAN DISASTERS
I love this movie, no matter what anyone thinks. Sid & Nancy were two fabulous human disasters, legends of their own kind. That is why people still talk about them today. Chloe Webb is hillarious as Nancy Spungen, I just love her performance. If you think i'm crazy, well, just like she said in the movie: " F. U.!" hahaha! Great Movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Myth of Sid and Nancy's Toxic Love
An autobiographical account of the doomed relationship between Sid and Nancy (precursors to Kurt and Courtney in pop culture lore) ... who met their demise in New York City after a binge of drugs and booze. Gary Oldman recreates the viscous demons that made Sid a Rock 'n Roll icon after his death. This is a very good movie. In fact, it is extremely well done all around. The acting was very effective and convincing. Russ Tamblyn is excellent. 5-0 out of 5 stars Some things never change . . .
I teach the history of pop music at the college level and I'm always looking for source material. It's hard to beat the mid to late 50s movies featuring teen angst and early rock and roll. It's interesting to me that we still have similar issues with drugs, home life, teenage behavior, etc. When I talk about the 50s in my class, I often show clips from these types of movies. This movie is not so much about the music (like "Don't Knock the Rock," or "Rock Around the Clock") but more of a period piece similar to "Blackboard Jungle." I gave it a 5 because it takes me back to that time better than most movies made in the 50s. ... Read more

It's brash! It's grotesque! It's a blistering display of psychological terrorism! One of the blackest comedies ever made, this 1962 thriller rejuvenated the careers of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and played heavily on their own Hollywood legends, incorporating film clips from their earlier stardom to add depth and realism to a severely twisted tale of sibling rivalry. Davis plays the former child star turned wrinkled hag Jane Hudson, whose sister Blanche (Crawford) eclipsed her star in Hollywood, and has been paying for it ever since. Now confined to a wheelchair, Blanche is held prisoner in the musty mansion she shares with Jane, who terrorizes Blanche with maniacal control (and dead rats for dinner), and embarks on an absurd campaign to revive her career, curly-haired wig and all. A deranged showcase for its stars, the film also introduced Oscar nominee Victor Buono as the sycophantic pianist hired to accompany Jane's bizarre vaudeville revival. Hilarious, frightening, and not to be missed! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still A Fun Watch, Even After All These Years
The film "Repo Man" is a bit dated, and yet it's still a fun watch. And I think that being a little dated makes it an even better film. Many films, especially from the 1970's to the mid 1980s have not stood the test of time. "Repo Man" does. From the punkish Otto (Emilio Estevez) to (Harry Dean Stanton) the film is as enjoyable [if not more] than when it was first released. I remember when I first watched the film, and thought how clever Nesmith was to include Otto's parents. When you see Otto's parents and their total devotion to the televangelist [very popular at the time] and being totally mesmerized by him that they send him all their money; you begin to understand that Otto's a hell of a lot more normal and sane than society would have us believe.
1-0 out of 5 stars VERY anti-Christian
The movie has many none-too-subtle *VERY* anti-Christian elements, particularly in the typical Hollywierd portrayal of money grubbing "Christian" TV Evangelists and Christians themselves as stupid zombies; life as basically pointless.
4-0 out of 5 stars "I don't want no commies in my car. No Christians either."
Alex Cox sends up the Reagan era in a black comedy about car reposession. With a stellar soundtrack and lots of quotables, Cox is the precursor to the Coens and Tarantino. Cox sends up everything but the kitchen sink-suburban life, televangelism, nuclear fear, UFO conspiracies, commercialism, self help cults, and more I'm sure I missed here. Straight up lo-budget classic if you have a taste for irony and absurdity. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. Yes, Virginia, a large transvestite actually eats dog feces as a kind of dizzying denouement to this frequently illogical and intentionally disgusting movie, but by the time that happens, you're already numb ... and you've possibly laughed to the point of losing bladder control.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictively filthy... !!!
Billed as the filthiest film ever made, the truth is that PINK FLAMINGOS might be wickedly campy and seedy - - but its reputation is somewhat deceptive... mainly because John Waters is a great story teller... the film is well paced... genuinely funnyand genuinely rewatchable over and over again. The lines are quotable... and the characters areunforgettable... as for offensive... Yes, but as long as you're willing to "let go" and let yourself be pulled into John Waters' unique world (JUST til the film ends of course, if you're still in it after it ends, institutionalization IS necessary!) it is definitely a one of a kind watching experience... - - as long as you don't mind the risk of someone accusing you of having the mind of a 14 year old. - - The soundtrack of the film and use of the music is also great...- - It alternates between John Waters' great screenwriting (if you don't believe he's a great writer, check out his book of memoirs and essays CRACKPOT!) and "silent" scenes with the rock and roll music and the charactors engaging in sick antics.I think Raymond Marbles definitely wins out over divine... he's so suave as he roams town exposing himself in the most unique of ways... As for the big irony... Though the film is best remembered for the famous dog doodie eating scene (at the very end), believe it or not, it could have been cut and the film would be equally great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you've heard is true!!
Revolting, disgusting, stomach turning, and freakin' funny! Divine is at her divinely best as Babs Johnson aka The Filthiest Person alive. I'm not going to give away anything, the shock value is just too good. It's fun watching this movie with people who have never seen it. I've seen reactions from people leaving the room to actual gagging! It's wonderful! But honestly, the movie is laung-out-loud funny. The dialoge, which can be a bit wordy, but never boring, is some of the best I've ever heard. Watch out for some great characters like Edie the egg lady, pure genius! Babs' birthday party scene has to be seen to be believed. You wouldn't believe me if I described it here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's the Most Disgusting Movie Ever
Anyone reading this review has already heard what's been said about it. It's been called the stupidest, most vile, disgusting film ever made. It's written/directed/produced/filmed by cult director John Waters and it's his first film. Calling this film the most disgusting, vile film ever made is almost an understatement. I don't really regret watching this film, but there are images in this film I will never get out of my head. I haven't bothered to read a lot into just how real a lot of this stuff is, but considering this movie was made in the 70s I'm not sure how they could have simulated most of this stuff...Which truly worries me. Divine, who I'm pretty damn sure is a guy, plays...Divine, who is living under the alias of Babs Johnson and is called "The Filthiest Person Alive," a title she is quite proud of. She lives with her family, consisting of her son Crackers, a live-in friend named Cotton, and her mother The Egg Lady who lives in a crib. I agree with the reviewer who said The Egg Lady needed to die, because she was annoying. She is annoying. Very annoying. Anyway, on the other side of town are Connie and Raymond Marble who are convinced that they are the filthiest people alive...And they just might be. Because they keep woman in their basement and have their servant impregnate the women and when the baby is born they sell it to lesbian couples. The woman usually die in childbirth. After the Marbles wage an all-out war on Babs and her family, it's on to see who is the filthiest person alive. Now, this movie is most definitely not for everyone. This is the most sickening, vile film I have ever seen...But it's also fascinating. I mean, some of this stuff is just so digusting I wonder how anyone could even envision any of this. John Waters actually seems like a fairly normal guy. If I knew nothing about this movie before watching it and you put John Waters and someone like Tim Burton (who, for the record, has never done anything like this movie but is a fairly discheveled looking guy) in a lineup and made me choose who I thought had written and directed it. I would choose Burton. People consider "Plan 9 From Outer Space" to be the worst film ever made, although that has crossed over into cult classic. What I don't understand is how no one ever gave this film that "honor." This movie has terrible acting, that's completely noticeable and yet doesn't annoy you half as much as Keanu Reeves did in "Dangerous Liaisons." This is truly a bad film. But for it's originality and supreme distaste, I was hooked. You also have to realize that Waters made this film so he could make a name for himself, in that aspect...This is a really great marketing idea. If you make a film that becomes widely known as the most disgusting ever made...People are gonna see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look out for the Zuni!!!
Back in the heyday of Dark Shadows Dan Curtis did some telly movies.Frankenstein with Robert Foxworth, The Norliss Tapes with Roy Thinnes, The Night Stalker with Darren Mcgavin, Scream of the Wolf with Clint Walker and Peter Graves, then eventually went on to do bigger projects like The Winds of War and War and Remembrance with Robert Mitchum.During that salad days of the mid 1970s, he did a nifty "novella" style movie called Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black. He went on to use Black in Burnt Offerings the following year.
5-0 out of 5 stars An all time great horror anthology classic!
This collection of three stories focusing on women characters featuring b-movie actress Karen Black in four roles starts off with the first tale called "Julie" has a college professor dating a student only to find out he's trying to kill her, next is "Millicent and Therese" about two sisters who live with each other are hellbent on killing each other off and finally "Amelia" has a woman being terrorized by an evil African Zuni fetish doll.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally again on DVD
THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE NEW 2006 SPECIAL EDITION VERSION.WORTH BUYING.I LOVE IT.When I first saw this on TV in the 1970's it scared me half to death.Karen Black stars in 3 short stories. But as many reviewers here have posted, the most famous is the final story called Amelia about a woman who buys a doll for a boyfriend which comes to life and chases her around her apartment like a rabid animal. In my opinion it is the third story that has caused Trilogy of Terror to be remembered after all these years. The third story is a classic among terror films. In 1999 another company (Anchor Bay) released this on DVD but after they sold out their batch I don't think they released anymore. That is why if you find someone selling it on Amazon or elsewhere you can expect to pay up to $500 for it.I bought one at a Horror Movie convention and it turned up being a bootleg and when I took it home it didn't play.I lost my money. Finally it is out again. This time by a different company and I am impressed with this version. The film has been completely restored and is crystal clear like you are watching it back when it was first released.I was highly impressed with the visual restoration. Exceeded my expecations here. The interviews with Karen Black and writer Matheson are great and informative.Karen looks great for her age and, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated actresses.Just a joy to watch.I haven't yet watched the entire disc from start to finish.Truthfully, I got if for the third story only and if that was all the disc had I still would of bought it.Not to say the first two stories aren't bad. They are actually pretty good. But if you asked a 100 people why they like Trilogy of Terror...they will likely mention the third story about the Doll. The idea of a doll that comes to life and tries to kill is not new anymore and has been done repeatedly ever since.Think Chucky. But Trilogy of Terror I believe was the first to come out with it and what makes it work is that the doll is creepy looking.Another reason this was so successful at the time is the novelty of it all.Back when it first aired in the 1970's horror stuff, for the most part, was less gory. The story about the doll is only 20 minutes long but what they do in those 20 minutes is amazing. If you have never seen it before you likely will laugh since the special effects look a little cheesy now. They don't hold up well.In my opinion...nothing beats the magic of seeing it back then and also seeing it for the first time. Now that I watch it I know what happens throughout the whole story. But if you haven't watched it before and you can watch it for the story and not try to compare it to special effects of today...you will likely appreciate it.The acting of Karen Black alone is worth watching. She makes all 3 stories work. She makes them memorable.I would of bought this if it had the third segment only and if it had no bonus material. On a side note...they came out a couple of years ago with a replica of the doll.I was lucky enough to get a limited edition one of only 500 made. The limited edition had a green outfit on.Not what it wears in the movie. They then sold a massed produced one with a brown outfit. But it seems that everywhere you look everyplace is sold out of this doll.I gave this five stars for those buying this that are collectors or who watched it back in the 1970's and want to see it again restored in all its glory. If you are buying it now to see for the first time you will likely laugh more than being scared and will be disappointed wondering what all the fuss is about.Buy it with an open mind and get lost in the story and you will not be disappointed. ...
