5-0 out of 5 stars Must have seen it dozens of times
When I heard that Maureen Stapleton passed, I immediately remembered her as her character in this movie. My brother and I watched this movie over and over and over when we were 4 and 7 years old, respectively. It is touching and appropriate, a wonderful, timeless family classic. We later found out that it was filmed at a house in the town where we lived, so any time we drove past the house, we excitedly pointed out the "Electric Grandmother House" to anybody within earshot.

This is an excellent children's movie. I saw it as a child myself when it first came on Nickelodeon (you know, back in the stone age of the 80's?).

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Introduction to the American Revolution
Had very high hopes for this movie of introducing the American Revolution in an entertaining way. The movie is an adaptation of the Newbery Award winning historical novel Johnny Tremain which is set during the American Revolution. The movie is okay but not at the exceptional level one generally thinks of for a Disney movie. The highlight of the DVD is Walt Disney talking about human freedom in the Special Feature The Making of Johnny Tremain and Introduction to the movie. As a possible alternative around Independence day would recommend the PBS documentary American Experience John and Abigail Adams which also covers this period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Tremain - DVD
This DVD covered a lot of the material mentioned in our school's Socical Studies curriculum.I used it as a supplement my curriculum because it provides a great visual of this time of history.I felt the themes of the importance of religion in peoples' lives, apprenticeship, rise of patriotism, and the means the minute men used to fight the war were explained well.

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM THE "BOSTON TEA PARTY" TO "PAUL REVERE'S RIDE" JOHNNY TREMAIN ENTERTAINS!
"Johnny Tremain" is among the most entertaining historical films ever produced.Disney's American Revolution films, such as "Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow," "The Swamp Fox" tv series, and "Johnny Tremain" are not only enjoyable feature films, they give the viewer a history lesson in the bargain.Young Hal Stalmaster plays Johnny, who is the son of a rich aristocratic woman who dies, leaving her son a sterling silver cup with the engraving LYTE on it.Johnny Lyte Tremain is secretly the heir to an English noble family of great wealth. As the story unfolds, he's caught up in the early stages of the coming American Revolution, with the Boston Tea Party and the Ride of Paul Revere to be played out with great performances by all. This movie was made for tv, however, plays as a theater release. The dvd transfer has some glitches and the color is not as vibrant as it should be.I taped this movie from the Disney channel and my vhs tape copy is more clear and the color has more depth.I highly recommend "Johnny Tremain" to fans of "Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow," "The Swamp Fox" tv series, and to all Disney dvd collectors."Johnny Tremain" is a definite essential to American history buffs and makes a great addition to any dvd library.

A great small film. The premise is a little corny but over all, the movie is a classic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of DVD To Kill a Mockingbird
The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!! -Sad truth about little actress
This is defintely the cutest movie ever made. I've loved it since I was a kid, I'm 26 now and am purchasing it for my 3 yr old. I recommend this movie to anyone with a child or who has the heart of a child! I was pretty bummed to hear that the actress "Bridgette Anderson" who played Savannah died an unfortunate death in 1997. What a waste of such a beautiful life that touched so many hearts.....Rest in peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pursuing Excellence
As others have said this movie is indeed about family values, the price(s) one pays for winning and competition and dealing with devloping your child. Let us take all that as given - there are two other things that, to my mind are the core bedrock and are usually not mentioned in the review. But are in fact central in the script and the message.
5-0 out of 5 stars Searching For Bobby Fischer
Excellent movie, very clear digial reproduction, in widescreen format.Acting performance was rated five stars.Plot and story, five stars.I especially liked the scene where the parents were fighting over allowing their son to continue in Chess competitions.Excellent purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'But I'm not Bobby Fischer' (recommended)
From the title you might imagine a swarm of detectives combing the city looking for champion Bobby Fischer missing from a chess tournament. However, this is the story of a very gifted young boy named Josh Waitzkin who possesses an intuitive grasp of chess (and other games). Though the movie involves chess, it's not about this game so much as it is about nurturing a child to grow into his own person. The mysterious disappearance of Bobby Fischer, world chess champion, did leave a void. But does this give family and coaches the right to demand that another child replicate that vacancy? Can Josh continue to enjoy chess along with all the other things "normal" children do? Or is he destined to become part of a regimented chess-champion making machine?

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Movie
This movie is beautiful to look at and also has a beautiful respect for the Cherokee culture.James Cromwell is an excellent actor and as usual is wonderful in this film.Joesph Ashton is adorable as Little Tree.Tantoo Cardinal (though looking a bit too young and healthy for the role)and Graham Greene also give great performances.I wasn't thrilled with the idea of Little Tree being taught the moonshine business but in the context of the story it does fit and is not offensive.I suppose someone could be offended by the portrayal of some of the mountain people especially in the church scenes but again it fits in to the storyline and has some historical accuracy.I have never read the book and was unaware of any controversy about the author until I read other people's reviews and I hope the book's author's affiliations don't keep anyone from enjoying this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Education of Little Tree
A tremendous story in spite of the fact that it is fiction. Now you know why so many schools have it on their reading lists. The screen script follows the book with some cutting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping
These days I watch the first scenes of a DVD rather cautiously, waiting to see if I'll get hooked. To my surprise, this DVD was totally absorbing: the beauty of the countryside and the even-handed portrayal of story and characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apart from one scene scaring me, I loved this movie.
The first time I saw this movie, there was one scene which scared me; the scene where Mary's parents are dying from the plague (I think it was cholera?). The music they use for this can send chills down someone's back; I know because it did mine.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worset movie ever
I can't stand this movie, it's one of the worset.

Editorial Review

When a mistreated beagle pup follows 11-year-old Marty Preston (BlakeHeron) home one day, it sparks a passion in the boy that leads him into aweb of moral and emotional turmoil. Marty knows the dog belongs to hisirascible neighbor, Judd Travers (a spittin' mean performance by ScottWilson); he also knows Judd breaks local gaming laws and abuses hishounds. But Marty's father (Michael Moriarty) is a stickler for the firstrule of pet ownership: he who owns the pet rules the pet. Marty seeksadvice from the wise Doc Wallace (Rod Steiger), who tells the boy abouthis own struggle to claim legal guardianship over his granddaughterfollowing her parents' death. The story inspires Marty to fight for thecreature he has come to love. With a believable blend of nerve, conviction, and a hint of fear, Marty works every angle to beg, buy, or(finally) strike a trade with Travers to save Shiloh. While its pace runsa bit slow, the film provides a thoughtful lesson in weighing right andwrong and should appeal to families with children under 12. Based on theNewbery Award-winning book Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD FAMILY MOVIE
SHILOH is an entertaining movie the whole family can enjoy. It especially stresses the importance of children taking responsibility for their pets, and the movie also has a warm family relationship. While it's pacing is rather slow, the story of how a young boy rescues a beagle from an abusive owner should keep even the smaller kids involved. The cast does well in their roles:Blake Heron shines as little Marty, determined to provide a good home for the mistreated Shiloh; Scott Wilson is appropriately evil as the dog's abusive owner; Michael Moriarty and Ann Dowd do well as the parents; and Rod Steiger and Bonnie Bartlett are fine as the elderly couple who befriend the young boy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great kid movie adults will like too
Sure the acting was a bit stiff, and the story too much like an after school special, but the movie was just a cute little thing to watch on a Sunday night at home.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bad film adaptation of a great book
It really is sad to see Phills Reynold Naylor's great masterpiece about a beagle puppy trampled on like this. This film was not at all faithful to the book. The first difference is that in the book Shiloh had a black spot just behind his left ear about one inch in front of his leg.In the movie, the spot is way over on his back!In the book, Shiloh's tail was a couple inches long.In the movie, it's like a foot!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The One-Hundred Greatest Films Ever Made
A River Runs Through It is a difficult film to review or even fairly comment upon. It is beautifully-filmed and overflowing with the sort of natural scenery---thick dark forests, cold, free-flowing rivers, wide-open skies---that in most movies would steal the show. It also features a cast of actors, Tom Skerit,Emily Lloyd, Craig Sheffer, Brad Pitt, giving what I will long remain convinced is the most outstanding performance of their careers. This classic 1991 motion picture (re-)tells the true story of writer Norman Maclean's youth and early adulthood nearly a century ago in the wilds of rural Montana. Norman is a deep, pensive person, in many ways the opposite of his younger brother Paul, a free-spirited daredevil whose adventurous nature is good-hearted but perilous, as everyone around him except Paul himself seems to see. Norman and Paul's father is an upstanding Presbyterian minister whose scholarly erudition and sternly eloquent sermons give way at frequent intervals to undertaking the great passion in his life: fly fishing. The Reverend Maclean loves nothing more than to take his sons to the river to fly fish for trout. On these trips the elder Maclean imparts life's lessons to the boys and passes on words of wisdom they will each go on to recall during the course of their lives.
1-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic waste of time
After finally getting through this movie I felt my time would have been better spent staring at a blank wall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be ranked as a classic
"River" has it all -the sure direction of Redford, excellent script and acting, and the breathtaking beauty of Montana. This is a nuanced film about two brothers on divergent paths and their complicated relationship with each other and their dad. But it's not corny or maudlin. The fly fishing sequences are symbolic in many ways. This is a great film all around, but would be worth buying just for Craig Sheffer's performance alone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A movie worth watching
A very good drama, Radio Flyer, brings to the screen the story of two young boys whose father abandons them at a young age leaving their mother alone in providing and caring for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
I liked absolutely everything about this movie. There is a certain magic to it. The plot is not so merry, rather sad, but things like that sadly do happen in reality.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bitter Sweet
Talk about a late comer.Obviously, I just saw the film, made years ago, and highly doubt many will read this.I am still compelled to write this though - I've been disturbed since I saw the film. All the reviews were helpful to some degree, as I crave different view points. One thing that was never mentioned and I thought of at the end of the film is that the abusive father beat and finally killed Bobby. The imagination of Mikey placed Bobby in a fictional "better place", flying away in the mystical Radio Flyer, and later living an adventurous full life.Other tidbits: I don't believe a father would tell his sons (at that age) the truth if it was death at the hands of abuse or suicide; Mikey, now an adult reliving his horrible childhood, would of liked it to have really ended that way; Bobby was too young to survive alone in life - even IF the successful flight of the Radio Flyer was to be believed; a mother, as loving as this one was portrayed, would, without a doubt notice either bruises, or a change in her son's personality - something. Finally, I could not swallow that a mother, even one as dependent on a man as this one was, could EVER take the man back after a child you love is beaten half to death!Ok.I'm done.Guess it's hard to make a movie with such sensitive subject matter.I loved and hated the film, hence the title "Bitter Sweet."P.S.I do believe there were 2 boys, Hanks is portrayed quite sane. And I love animals.I was so glad he (Hanks) also pretended that Shane survived his beating....and my lord, the acting was incredible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie today as much as I loved it when I was 10....
I saw this movie for the first time when I was something like 10 years old, and immediately fell in love with Anne Shirley. I have now read everything by L.M. Montgomery that I can get my hands on, and am as big a fan as ever. This movie is a beautiful version of a beautiful book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Way things should be
"Anne of Green Gables" shows how a combination of love, honesty, hard work, tolerance and integrity is the perfect mix for bringing out the best from the potential in anyone, even in a non-traditional family. It's an incredibly refreshing break from today's society, where lying and manipulation have become almost a norm in much of the world we know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic
All the great reviews written previously say it all - Anne of Green Gables the movie is a timeless classic of the classic novel. I've been watching this movie since I've been a child, and I still watch it as an adult. A movie like this doesn't need "special features" for it to be attractive as a DVD(Although the commentary is great!). Just the fact that no matter how long I keep this and how often I watch this movie, it won't change like VHS does. ... Read more

When his beloved grandfather passes away, fifth-grade Catholic schoolboy Joshua (Joseph Cross) has a crisis of faith. He asks both the nuns and his parents (Denis Leary and Dana Delany) difficult questions as he sets out on a mission: to find God and make sure his grandfather is OK. As if that weren't enough, he also has to contend with schoolyard bullies, the sudden appeal of girls, needy schoolmates, and the recklessness of his best friend David (Timothy Reifsnyder). Though the precociousness of the children is a little hard to believe, there's a genuine feeling and a surprising complexity of thought about faith that makes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Shyamalan's best movies
Wide Awake will be a very pleasant surprise for fans of Shyamalan's more recent movies; this is one of his best.Even if you're not a Shyamalan fan, look this one up; other than a very strong story, it has no connection to Shyamalan's horror movies. This is a funny-serious, Christian-themed family movie. Many stereotypes about Catholic education are used, but these are done in a light-hearted manner, one might say lovingly; the positives of a Catholic education can be discerned right along with the stereotypically bad.Religious questions are presented in ways that should not offend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Twist Ending!
I thought Sixth Sense was Mortimer Shyamalan's first film, but when I happened across this at a local flea market, I just had to snap it up. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not all angels have wings!!!!
Not as good of an impact than The village or The sixth sense but is on my list of greatest movies ever!!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Shirley Temple's superstardom in the 1930s was associated with Twentieth Century Fox, but before Fox locked her down she made two films for Paramount. It was 1934, her breakthrough year, and these pictures are not quite yet the showcase vehicles Fox would assemble for their pint-sized meal ticket. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Shirley Temple movie of all
Actually, I watched this movie because I was so fascinated by Dorothy Dell, who starred as "Bangles Carson," a tough gambler's girlfriend and nightclub singer. It is hard to believe that Dell was only nineteen years old when she made this film; she died two weeks after the film's release in a horrific nighttime car accident. But she looks and acts much, much older...she was beautiful, talented, and had an extremely promising future.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too Cute !!!!
This is a great movie for all Shirley Temple fans .Shirley plays a curly topped orphan who starts out as a sweet little girl who loves fairies and King Arthur and turns into a little mug and says things like "lay off me" and "that would be somethin'."The only thing that would keep you from buying this movie is Shirley does not tap dance or do much singing in the movie. The only song she does is " Son of a Gun." Still she is very cute in this movie and it shows one of her earlier roles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor Little Rich Girl
This movie is the type of movie that children should be watching today. It had some educational back ground in it.Where Shirley was presued by a man and wanting her to go with him to buy candy. If the parents are watching this movie with the children they can point out what was wrong when she started to go with him.Other than that the movie was fun to watch and a delight to see a movie without swearing. As in all of her movies she can light up your day and at the same time make you cry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars shilo 2 season
I read the book shilo because I thought it would be a good book. And I was right it was a very good book. It was a very exiting book. I especially like the part were Shilo cmes to Marti. I like this book because I like animals. It made me kind of sad when Jud tried to hurt Shilo. I look forward to reading more Shilo books.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVEN BETTER THEN NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Message Sender
I love all kinds of dogs particularly hounds and I really enjoyed watching Shiloh II Shiloh season. Not only is it a great animal movie but it teaches a great lesson how a little kindness goes a long way. Although it was good in that sense it was also a little violent which is why it's rated PG. Overall it was very pleasing to watch and to learn from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillant Adaptation of the Book!
I LOVE this movie!!!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
I cant believe no one has put this on DVD. In the age of Britney Spears and all the trashy, pointless pre-teen movies Hollywood keeps pumping out, this is a gem I'd like to have around when I have children of my own. I saw this version on PBS as a very little girl, and now, in my mid 20's, have it on video to watch whenever I like. I bought a used version here on Amazon for less than 15 dollars. It is MORE than worth it. ... Read more
